Rear Admiral : Maverick. Thirty-plus years of service. Combat medals. Citations. Only man to shoot down three enemy planes in the last 40 years.

[Cain looks through pages of Maverick's records]

Rear Admiral : 'Distinguished.' 'Distinguished.' 'Distinguished.' Yet you can't get a promotion, you won't retire, and, despite your best efforts, you refuse to die. You should be at least a two-star admiral by now, if not a senator. Yet here you are: Captain. Why is that?

Maverick : It's one of life's mysteries, sir.

Rear Admiral : This isn't a joke. I asked you a question.

Maverick : I'm where I belong, sir.

Rear Admiral : Well, the navy doesn't see it that way. Not anymore.

Rear Admiral : These planes you've been testing, Captain, one day, sooner or later, they won't need pilots at all. Pilots that need to sleep, eat, take a piss. Pilots that disobey orders. All you did was buy some time for those men out there. The future is coming, and you're not in it.

[Cain faces the officer by the door]

Rear Admiral : Escort this man off the base. Take him to his quarters. Wait with him while he packs his gear. I want him on the road to North Island within the hour.

[surprised look on Maverick's face]

Maverick : North Island, sir?

Rear Admiral : Call came in with impeccable timing, right as I was driving here to ground your ass once and for all. It galls me to say it, but... for reasons known only to the Almighty and your guardian angel, you've been called back to Top Gun.

Maverick : Sir?

Rear Admiral : You are dismissed, Captain.

[Maverick proceeds to leave Cain's office]

Rear Admiral : The end is inevitable, Maverick. Your kind is headed for extinction.

[Maverick turns around]

Maverick : Maybe so, sir. But not today.

Never too old for a ball game with dad! Tom Cruise’s son Connor joined the Mission Impossible star for a rare family outing together in California, where the pair watched the Los Angeles Dodgers face off against the San Francisco Giants.

At one point during the game, which took place on Saturday, October 9, Cruise was spotted on the Jumbotron—and he wasn’t alone! The 59-year-old  Top Gun  actor was seated next to his son, 26-year-old Connor Cruise . While the elder Cruise flashed a smile for the cameras, his son could be seen chatting with other fans sitting next to him, according to Us Weekly . You can see Tom Cruise ‘s son Connor sitting next to him on his left in the photo below.

The Edge of Tomorrow share shares his son Connor with his ex-wife, Nicole Kidman . The former couple, who got married in December 1990 and divorced in 2001, also adopted a daughter, Isabella. While the pair rarely speak about their 11-year marriage, Kidman recently opened up about the media attention she experienced during their relationship in an interview for  Harper’s Bazaar   for their October 2021 cover story.

tom-cruise-son-connor

“I was young. I think I offered it up?” Kidman   said when asked about the media frenzy she and Cruise faced. “Maybe I’ve gotten a bit more trepidatious, but I’m always trying to be as open as possible. I just prefer to live in the world that way.”

The  Big Little Lies   star went on to explain why she prefers to be honest in the public eye: “I’m wary at times, and I’ve been hurt, but at the same time I much prefer a warm approach rather than a prickly shutdown approach. My husband, Keith [Urban], says that when he met me, he said, ‘How’s your heart?’ And I apparently responded, ‘Open,'” she said, referring to her new spouse, whom she married in 2006.

Ever since she split from Cruise, Kidman has also kept her relationship with her children private. Some have speculated over the years that the Nine Perfect Strangers  star is estranged from her children with Cruise due to their involvement in the Church of Scientology with their father, however, Kidman has since denied these rumors.  “They have made choices to be Scientologists. It’s our job as a parent to always offer unconditional love,” she told  The Sun  in 2019. These days, it looks like both Cruise and Kidman are offering that love up to their kids.

Tom Cruise and Ex Nicole Kidman Share 2 Adult Children: Meet Connor and Isabella Cruise

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Top Gun: Maverick star Tom Cruise and Big Little Lies alum Nicole Kidman had a whirlwind romance in the early 1990s after meeting on the set of their film, Days of Thunder. The pair tied the knot on Christmas Eve 1990 and, while their relationship didn’t last, the couple welcomed two children together before their February 2001 split. Keep reading for details on their children, Connor and Isabella Cruise .

Are Connor and Isabella Cruise Adopted?

Tom and Nicole expanded their family when they adopted daughter Isabella shortly after her birth in October 1992. Three years later they added their son, Connor , to the family when they adopted him in January 1995.

While the former couple never had biological children, the Being the Ricardos star later revealed that she had suffered two pregnancy losses throughout their marriage.

"I had a miscarriage at the end of my marriage, but I had an ectopic pregnancy at the beginning of my marriage,” she told Marie Claire in November 2007. “It was incredibly traumatic for me. Sometimes you share your grief. … What will be will be. It's in God's hands."

Are Connor and Isabella Estranged From Their Parents?

Both Connor and Bella tend to stay out of the public eye, only making rare appearances at events and on social media. However, it has been widely reported that their relationship with their mother has been strained due to their involvement in the Church of Scientology.

“They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions,” Nicole told WHO magazine in November 2018 of her relationship with her adult children. “They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them. And I am an example of that tolerance and that’s what I believe — that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open here.”

She went on to say that she is “very private” about her relationships with her adult children in order to “protect all those relationships.”

“I know 150 percent that I would give up my life for my children because it’s what my purpose is,” Nicole added.

Do Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman Have Other Children?

Following their divorce, Tom went on to marry Dawson’s Creek alum Katie Holmes . The couple – who tied the knot on November 18, 2006 – welcomed daughter Suri Cruise in April of that year.

For her part, the Hawaii native married country singer Keith Urban in June 2006 after meeting at a Los Angeles event honoring Australians the previous year. Nicole gave birth to daughter Sunday Rose in 2008, and daughter Faith Margaret followed via surrogate in 2010.

Tom Cruise and Son Connor Cruise Make Rare Joint Outing Together in NYC

Tom cruise and his son connor cruise, who he shares with his ex-wife nicole kidman, made a rare public appearance together for a mission: impossible — dead reckoning event..

It's safe to mark this father-son outing as mission: complete.

Tom Cruise enjoyed a rare day out  with his son Connor in New York City while promoting his new film Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One . The duo were spotted walking to an AMC Theater in Times Square alongside Tom's older sister,  Lee Ann Mapother .

For the event, Tom, 61, kept his look simple in dark wash jeans, a black button down and aviator-style glasses befitting the  Top Gun: Maverick  star. As for Connor, 28, he donned a gray collared shirt, gray pants and stylish sneakers while carrying a backpack.

While Connor and his sister Bella Kidman Cruise —whose mom is Tom's ex-wife Nicole Kidman —largely keep their lives out of the spotlight, they have occasionally made public appearances with their dad. In fact, back in 2021, Tom and Connor wound up on the jumbotron while at a Los Angeles Dodgers game.

The DJ and Bella, 30, also occasionally give glimpses into their lives on social media. Connor, for one, is no stranger to sharing his outdoor adventures in Florida —on fishing trips or the golf course.

As for Bella? While she largely shares her art on social media , she took followers on her hair journey earlier this year, sharing a rare selfie showing off her new ‘do. In the snap on her March 29 Instagram Story, Bella debuted the new shoulder-length haircut complete with bangs, noting that the look gave her "so much joy still."

And while Connor and Bella largely showcase lives outside of their famous family, their parents have also spoken about keeping that relationship out of the spotlight, with Nicole explaining why it's important to her.

"I'm very private about all that. I have to protect all those relationships," she  told  Australia's  WHO  magazine in 2018. "I know 150 percent that I would give up my life for my children because it's what my purpose is."

Tom Cruise’s rare feat: Reviving Maverick, 36 years later

The new ‘top gun’ sequel isn’t the first time an actor has returned to a role after a long hiatus, but it doesn’t happen often.

Tom Cruise has hung off the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai and dangled from the wing of a plane thousands of feet above the earth. He has ridden a motorcycle off a cliff and held his breath underwater for six and a half minutes. He has even survived starring in “Cocktail” (1988) and jumping on Oprah’s couch (2005). But with the theatrical release of “Top Gun: Maverick,” Cruise accomplishes a feat that could be record-breaking. He’s portraying a character — hotshot fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell — that he first brought to the screen 36 years ago, perhaps the longest delay for a return appearance in Hollywood movie history.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ rocks, with finesse, style and genuine emotion

Double plays (and more) are hardly unheard of, especially in a modern Hollywood addicted to franchise properties and characters. More people know Robert Downey Jr. from nine movies — nine! — as Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man , than from anything else he has done in his career. But Cruise’s feat is unusual for a number of reasons. The original “Top Gun” (1986) was a massive hit and a pop-culture touchstone (and a pretty terrible movie, but never mind), but it was always a one-and-done experience. When Maverick flew off into the sunset with Kelly McGillis’s Charlie at the end, everyone got up and went home.

Yet here’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” arriving nearly four decades after the original. To be fair, the sequel, which sees the hero put in charge of a cadre of young pilots assigned a dangerous mission against a conveniently anonymous enemy, began production four years ago and was originally scheduled for a July 2019 premiere. Production delays and the arrival of the coronavirus pushed back the release date no less than five times; even Cruise is helpless against the massed forces of delta and omicron. Ironically, the delay has only heightened expectations, and a project that seemed like a punchline when it was announced in 2010 has bowled over preview audiences and early critics in blockbuster-starved 2022.

The delays also gave Cruise the apparent record by lengthening the time between original and sequel. There have been several instances of an actor returning late in life to a character they established earlier, and in almost every case the phenomenon arises from the combination of a star whose career longevity has achieved legendary (or at least near-legendary) proportions and a property that audiences might want to pay to see again. Is the motive always mercenary? I can think of only three examples where the urge for the swallows to return to Capistrano is predicated on genuine creative curiosity or at least random serendipity.

The class act in this category is Paul Newman chalking his pool cue again as “Fast Eddie” Felson in Martin Scorsese’s “The Color of Money” (1986), a quarter-century after “The Hustler” (1961). Newman’s Oscar win was especially sweet, given that he’d been nominated for best actor six times before — including for “The Hustler” and “Hud” and “Cool Hand Luke” and “The Verdict” — without taking the prize.

Money may have been the deciding factor in Marlon Brando taking on the role of Mafia don Carmine Sabatini in “The Freshman” (1990) 18 years after Vito Corleone in “The Godfather” (1972), but the movie itself, a wonderfully flaky comedy, hardly feels like a cash grab. Does this even count as a return appearance, because Brando’s character isn’t Vito Corleone but (supposedly) the man who inspired him? Feel free to argue, but “The Freshman” wouldn’t exist without “The Godfather,” and that’s that. (Coincidentally, 1990 also saw Brando’s one-time co-star Al Pacino return to his “Godfather” role in the “The Godfather Part III,” a movie that only proved lightning doesn’t strike thrice.)

Were audiences clamoring for Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter in “Bill & Ted Face the Music” (2020) three decades after “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” (1989) charmed teenage stoners everywhere? Not really, which is one reason the movie’s so funny. Usually when actors deign to return to a classic role, they arrive with star wattage weathered but undimmed by time; the chiseled Cruise of “Top Gun: Maverick” makes the flyboy of the first film look like he’s still working off his baby fat. Reeves and Winter just look … older, and the film keeps booting them down the line into various futures to worsening effect. It’s all oddly cheering, as if you or I had been called upon to reprise our high school play at the 30th reunion.

Otherwise, these overdue returns are a form of what we now call fan service, in which a nostalgic blockbuster enterprise is dusted off two or three decades later with the original stars bringing gravitas to the project — or at least audiences wanting to touch a known talisman from their pop culture past. Sylvester Stallone returned to “Rambo” (2008) 20 years after “Rambo III” (1988) and “Rocky Balboa” (2006) 21 years after “Rocky IV” (1985). Leonard Nimoy re-upped as Spock for the 2009 “Star Trek” reboot 20 years after the last Trek movie with the original cast. Sean Connery cried uncle and agreed to play James Bond one more time in the aptly titled “Never Say Never Again” (1983), 12 years after “Diamonds Are Forever” (1971).

Have you noticed anything missing here? Like, maybe, actresses? Aside from Linda Hamilton reprising her role as Sarah Connor in “Terminator: Dark Fate” (2019), 28 years after “Terminator 2,” the delayed return visit seems mostly a male phenomenon, for reasons that don’t reflect well on Hollywood or on audiences. In the classic studio era, Bette Davis played Queen Elizabeth I twice in 16 years (“The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex” in 1939 and “The Virgin Queen” in 1955), but only because as far as anyone was concerned she was Queen Elizabeth — regal, peremptory, eternal. Otherwise, it’s the depressing truth that male movie stars are allowed to age in popular culture but not their female counterparts.

If you doubt that, remember the online insults from callow fanboys that greeted the late Carrie Fisher’s General Leia Organa in “Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens” (2015). The actress responded valiantly, tweeting “Please stop debating about whether or not I aged well. Unfortunately it hurts all three of my feelings,” but why would anyone want to submit themselves to that? Kelly McGillis, Cruise’s co-star in 1986, is 64 now and wasn’t asked to be in “Top Gun: Maverick,” and that’s fine by her. “I’m old, and I’m fat, and I look age-appropriate for what my age is,” McGillis cheerfully told reporters. (Jennifer Connelly, 51, plays the love interest in the new movie.)

The humanity and humor of Carrie Fisher

That said, the undisputed king of returning movie warriors has to be Harrison Ford, by dint of his starring in the two franchises that started the ball rolling in the first place. “Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens” (2015) came out 32 years after Ford’s last appearance as Han Solo, in “Return of the Jedi” (1983), while “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” (2008) appeared 19 years after “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” (1989). And let’s not forget the 35 years between “Blade Runner” (1982) and “Blade Runner 2049” (2017).

If you’re counting from the character’s debut, Ford’s last major appearance in a Star Wars film came out 38 years after the first, which gives him the crown. And the star still isn’t done. There’s a new Indy movie, already shot but as yet untitled, in the can for release in June 2023. It will mark 42 years since Ford first appeared as Indiana Jones.

Take that, Tom Cruise.

Tom Cruise and 24-year-old son Connor make rare public appearance together

Tom and Connor Cruise made a father-son appearance in London over the weekend.

The actor and his 24-year-old son, whom he shares with ex-wife Nicole Kidman , were photographed as they approached a private helicopter.

Tom Cruise and son Connor Cruise were spotted in London on October 12, 2019.

The 57-year-old was dressed in a navy hoodie and jeans as he waved and smiled at fans in the distance, while Connor wore a charcoal-gray sweatshirt with jeans and walked a few steps behind his famous dad.

According to People , Tom, who learned to fly a chopper (and to take a stroll at 5,000 feet ) for his work in the “Mission Impossible” franchise, took Connor along to show him “some aviation basics.”

The action star is a father of three, but isn't often photographed alongside his children.

He and Kidman adopted Connor and their 26-year-old daughter, Bella, during their decade-long marriage. Both of their adult children, who are Scientologists like their father, appreciate their privacy despite their parents’ high-profile lifestyles.

And both stars seem to respect that.

Nicole Kidman talks about the children she shares with Tom Cruise

Just last year, Kidman told Australia’s Who magazine that she’s “very private” where Bella and Connor are concerned , adding that she has “to protect all those relationships.”

And while she doesn’t share their affiliation with the controversial Church of Scientology , she supports their choices.

"They are able to make their own decisions," she told Who. "They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them. And I am an example of that tolerance, and that’s what I believe — that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open here."

Connor briefly followed in his parents’ footsteps and starred in two films — 2008’s “Seven Pounds” and 2012’s “Red Dawn” remake — before going on to pursue his passion for deep-sea fishing from his current hometown of Clearwater, Florida, according to People.

The “Top Gun” star is also dad to 13-year-old daughter, Suri, whom he shares with ex-wife Katie Holmes.

Details About Tom Cruise's Relationship With His Son Connor

Connor Cruise Tom Cruise

When Tom Cruise was married to Nicole Kidman , the couple adopted a son, Connor Cruise , and a daughter, Isabella Cruise. After the couple split, Cruise married Katie Holmes, and they had a daughter together, Suri Cruise. It has been reported that the "Top Gun" star has distanced himself from Suri as she is not a member of Scientology. The Hollywood A-lister has, however, maintained a relationship with his two other children, and is rather close with his son.

In 2016, the Daily Mail offered a glimpse into Connor's life in Clearwater, Florida, where he drove a GT Mustang and spent time deep sea fishing on his $500,000 boat paid for by his father. He also spent ample time at the Scientology headquarters located in Clearwater where he was given star treatment. "The security treat him like a god, they look starstruck whenever he arrives and practically queue up to high-five him and say hello," a source told the Daily Mail at the time. Similar to his dad, Connor was heavily involved in their religion and lived in a Scientology community. "High-level church officials think it's imperative Connor carries the torch," the insider added.

Formerly, Connor was a DJ, but he had pivoted to focusing on deep-sea fishing. He runs a business, Connor's Meat Shack , which provides, "Wagyu, brisket, burgers, chicken, and ribs on chars, flats and smokers," according to the company's Instagram page. Over the years, Connor has bonded with his dad over shared passions.

Why Tom Cruise and Connor Cruise bonded so closely

Tom Cruise's devout faith is well-known, and it is something that his son Connor Cruise has adopted as well. "Connor has been able to remain close with Tom because of Scientology," a source told People in 2019. The "Mission: Impossible — Fallout" actor was photographed with Connor in 2019 as the two boarded a private helicopter. Not only was it a rare public appearance for the father-son duo, but the pair was headed to the International Association of Scientologists together. "Tom and Connor stepping out together in London was a big deal," the insider added.

While the two do not make many public appearances together, they are supportive of one another behind the scenes. When the 2023 Academy Award nominations were announced, Connor showed support for his pops with a post on his Instagram Stories, listing the six nominations "Top Gun: Maverick" had nabbed, along with a row of trophy emojis, per Hello!

Even though Connor is the son of one of Hollywood's biggest stars, he leads "a pretty simple life in Clearwater," and spends a lot of time deep-sea fishing, a source told People in 2018. Connor's passion for fishing comes from time with his dad. "We used to go fishing a lot when I was a little kid," he told People in 2016. Another hobby of his as a kid was music. "I started DJing in my bedroom when I was about 13," Connor added. Tom was a supporter of his son's musical career.

How Tom Cruise shows support for Connor Cruise

When Connor Cruise was still pursuing a career as a DJ, he played a show in London and Tom Cruise showed up to give his support. "Tom walked in and went straight over to Connor and hugged him," a bystander told People in 2012 while mentioning that the "Edge of Tomorrow" actor stayed for the set to watch his son play. That same year, Connor returned the favor and supported his dad at work. He visited the set of "Oblivion" in 2012, which was an important time to be supportive as Tom Cruise had just finalized his divorce from Katie Holmes. There were claims that Tom's devotion to his faith had caused the split. "Let me be very clear about this. The Church of Scientology played absolutely NO ROLE in the divorce settlement talks at all. Period," the actor's lawyer, Bert Fields, told E! at the time. Four years later, while Tom was working on "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back," Connor once again dropped by to visit his dad. The pair exchanged a "loving hug" before parting ways, per People.

While Connor has grown closer with his father thanks to their shared involvement in Scientology, his faith has been rumored to cause a rift between himself and his mother, Nicole Kidman. When Connor tied the knot with a fellow Scientologist in 2019, Kidman was reportedly not invited to the ceremony, per Tom Cruise's wishes. "Connor worships the ground his father walks on and would never disobey Tom," an insider told Radar at the time.

Tom Cruise as Capt Pete Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick.

Top Gun: Maverick review – irresistible Tom Cruise soars in a blockbuster sequel

Cinema’s favourite ageless fighter pilot returns with all the nail-biting aeronautics and emotional sucker punches that made the original an 80s-defining hit

A nd we’re back. A full 36 years (including some Covid-related runway delays) after Tony Scott’s big-screen recruitment advert for US naval aviators became an epoch-defining cinema hit, Tom Cruise is back doing what he does best – flashing his cute/crazy superstar smile and flexing his bizarrely ageless body in an eye-popping blockbuster that, for all its daft macho contrivances, still manages to take your breath away, dammit.

From the burnished opening shots of planes waltzing off an aircraft carrier to the strains of Kenny Loggins’s Danger Zone , little has changed in the world of Top Gun – least of all Cruise. Maverick may be testing jets out in the Mojave desert, but he’s still got the jacket, the bike(s), the aviator shades and (most importantly) the “need for speed” that made him a hit back in 1986. He also has the machine-tooled rebellious streak that has prevented him rising above the level of captain – showcased in an opening Mach 10 sequence that doesn’t so much tip its hat to Philip Kaufman’s The Right Stuff as fly straight past it with a super-smug popcorn-eating grin. See ya, serious movie suckers!

“Your kind is headed for extinction,” growls Ed Harris’s forward-looking rear admiral (nicknamed the “Drone Ranger”) before admitting through gritted teeth that Maverick has in fact been called back to the Top Gun programme – not to fly, but to teach the “best of the best” how to blow up a uranium enrichment plant at face-melting velocity, a mission that will require not one but “ two consecutive miracles”. “I’m not a teacher,” Maverick insists, “I’m a fighter pilot.” But, of course, he can be both.

True to form, Maverick promptly throws the rulebook in the bin ( literally – the metaphors are not subtle) and tells his team of fresh-faced hopefuls that the only thing that matters is “your limits; I intend to find them, and test them”. Cue dog-fight training sequences played out to classic jukebox cuts, while thrusting young guns do 200 push-ups on the runway. In the local bar, an underused Jennifer Connelly serves up drinks and love-interest sass (Kelly McGillis was apparently not invited to this party) while Miles Teller ’s Rooster bangs out Great Balls of Fire on the piano, prompting a flashback to Maverick cradling Anthony Edwards’s Goose, who got famously cooked in the first film.

And therein lies what passes for the heart of the piece; because Rooster is Goose’s son, and Maverick (who still blames himself) doesn’t want to be responsible for history repeating itself. “If I send him on this mission,” Cruise emotes, “he might not come back; if I don’t send him, he’ll never forgive me. Either way I could lose him for ever.” Tough call, bro.

Cruise has described making a Top Gun sequel as being like trying to hit a bullet with a bullet – which is exactly the kind of thing that Maverick would say. Yet working with director Joseph Kosinski (with whom Cruise made Oblivion ) and scriptwriters including regular collaborator Christopher McQuarrie, he has done just that. For all its nostalgic, Miller Time sequences of shirtless beach sports and oddly touching character callbacks (a cameo from Val Kilmer ’s Iceman proves unexpectedly affecting), Top Gun: Maverick offers exactly the kind of air-punching spectacle that reminds people why a trip to the cinema beats staying at home and watching Netflix.

The plot trajectory may be predictable to the point of ridicule (like Richard Gere in An Officer and a Gentleman , Tom is going up where he belongs) but the emotional beats are as finely choreographed as the stunts. As for the “don’t think, just do” mantra (a cheeky rehash of Star Wars ’s “Use the force, Luke”), it’s as much an instruction to the audience as to the pilots.

Personally, I found myself powerless to resist; overawed by the ‘“real flight” aeronautics and nail-biting sky dances, bludgeoned by the sugar-frosted glow of Cruise’s mercilessly engaging facial muscles, and shamefully brought to tears by moments of hate-yourself-for-going-with-it manipulation. In the immortal words of Abba’s Waterloo, “I was defeated, you won the war”. I give up.

Tom Cruise made a rare appearance with his son, Connor , 26, over the weekend. The Mission Impossible  actor was spotted at a baseball game in San Francisco on Saturday. Cruise and his son were at Oracle Park for game two of the National League Division Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers when fans noticed the actor in the stands. Fellow actor Danny Glover was also in attendance for the big game.

"All the celebs come out for #NLDS games!! Wonderful to host THE @TomCruise at the @SFGiants v @Dodgers game tonight. Asked him which team he’s rooting for and he gracefully replied, 'I’m a fan of baseball,'" Amy Gutierrez, a reporter for the Giants shared alongside a selfie with Cruise.

Cruise was also captured on the video board, as the Top Gun  track "Danger Zone" played in the background.

While it was more of a family affair, the actor chatted it up with a few fans who stopped by his seat during the evening and posed for a couple of selfies.

Connor, Cruise and ex-wife  Nicole Kidman 's son, rarely makes appearances with his famous parents. In April, Connor shared a glimpse into his personal life during a European fishing trip. It was a first in a series of posts from the Florida native after a bit of a social media hiatus in October 2020.

Connor, an avid fisherman judging by his Instagram account, showed off his big catch to the camera alongside friend and boat captain Jack Vasilaros.

"One bite everybody knows the rules @barstooloutdoors @barstoolsports @hook360 shoutout to everyone who doesn’t want to fish against @hookedforlife in the gulf. Respect to him, best I’ve ever seen. @fountainofyouthfishing #72.05," he wrote.

Cruise and Kidman adopted both Connor and his older sister, 28-year-old Bella, when they were still married. Back in 2018, Kidman shared why she's so private when it comes to her children with Cruise and  how she feels about them choosing to be Scientologists  like their father.

"I have to protect all those relationships," she told Australia's  Who  magazine. "I know 150 percent that I would give up my life for my children because it’s what my purpose is."

"They are adults," she added. "They are able to make their own decisions. They have made choices to be Scientologists and, as a mother, it’s my job to love them. And I am an example of that tolerance and that’s what I believe -- that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open here."

Top Gun: Maverick

Review by Connor

Top gun: maverick 2022 ★★★★.

Watched Jun 11 , 2022

Connor’s review published on Letterboxd:

Before a single frame of the film, Tom Cruise himself fills the screen, nearly on the verge of tears from pride, to tell you “there’s real F-18s, real Gs, real speed” in this film and that “we’re so happy you’re here, in this theater and seeing it on the big screen so please enjoy… as we all made it for you.” And, truly, it feels as though Tom Cruise personally made this film for you. Because he did.

Tom Cruise is worth roughly $600M having grossed over $10B globally at the box office. He could have retired decades upon decades ago. Yet he is almost psychotically bent on continuing to up the stakes. When asked by the moderator of a Q&A at the 75th annual Cannes film festival why he continues to do his own stunts despite being a 59-year-old father he simply and passionately replied, “Would you ask Gene Kelly why he does all his own dancing?”

This film is the closest thing to an identical offspring of Top Gun possible. The opening is a shot for shot remake of the 1986 film down to the title font and the Kenny Loggins anthem “Danger Zone”. The following scene is Maverick doing what he does best, disobeying orders so he can be great. He takes an experimental hypersonic plane up to “10 Gs” much to the anger of an Admiral played by Ed Harris that wishes to cut the funding of this project to fund unmanned aircrafts — an intriguing semi-commentary towards exactly what I’m not sure, but nevertheless it serves the “old dog in a new era” thematic throughline. This primes the audience in fantastic fashion. By the end of this sequence you are thinking of nothing else. You are at the movies. You are watching Top Gun. And Tom Cruise does not leave one fan disappointed. The flight sequences are phenomenal. Nothing has ever been put to film quite like this. The cheesy dialogue, the awkwardly long romantic stares, the male bravado, the homoeroticism. It’s all there with a satisfying celebratory ending to boot. It is truly a masterwork of crowd-pleasing action cinema.

The reason Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell epitomizes Tom Cruise is because there is simply no separation between the person and persona. They now share the same humanity. One could not exist without the other. When Tom Cruise made Top Gun in 1986 he committed the most sacred act you can make in the satanic industry of classical Hollywood — he gave up his soul. He fulfilled his cosmic purpose as an actor. This goes beyond just “peaking”. This is immortalization of the highest kind. Karloff’s Monster. And Cruise has been fighting this existential endpoint ever since. He cannot exist on this earth without this fight. He will do this until it kills him. Because, looking at it from a morally neutral vantage point, giving yourself up for the audience is the holiest pursuit in showbiz . And because of this triumphant slow-motion struggle with death, he has put some of the most improbable action performances of all time to screen.

There was a key moment, a key choice that was made, that, for me, made, no pun intended at all, an electric impact: when the original “twin lightning” Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer Films opening logo appeared on screen. When this happened, I knew that powerful forces were being summoned here. That there was going to be an unprecedented level of dedication. And there was. And because of this dedication using words like “remake” or “sequel” or “reboot” would all but slander this film. This is not just another movie. This is Bob Fosse’s All That Jazz . This is Tony Hawk landing his last 900 at 48. This is the death rattle of greatness. And if there’s one thing I can tell you it’s to see it at the movies.

Box Office: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Debuts to Stratospheric $124 Million

Top Gun Maverick

Tom Cruise may have pulled off one of the most daring stunts of his career — getting audiences to go to the movies for something that doesn’t involve superheroes.

“ Top Gun: Maverick ” pulled in blockbuster ticket sales in its opening weekend, collecting $124 million from a record 4,732 North American cinemas. Paramount and Skydance’s all-American action adventure is expected to collect $151 million through Monday, defying expectations while also looking to set a new high-water mark for Memorial Day opening weekends. (Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” which launched with $153 million over the long weekend in 2007, currently holds the holiday record). That’s a testament to dazzling reviews, heaping doses of nostalgia and getting Cruise back in the cockpit to perform real aerial stunts as pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

At the international box office, the sequel to 1986’s “Top Gun” took flight with $124 million, an impressive sum since the movie isn’t playing in key territories, China and Russia. In total, “Top Gun: Maverick” has grossed $248 million worldwide.

Popular on Variety

“Top Gun: Maverick” is the highest-grossing domestic debut in Cruise’s 40-year career, and his first to surpass $100 million on opening weekend. “War of the Worlds,” which opened to $64 million in 2005, previously stood as Cruise’s biggest opening weekend.

It’s also one of the top pandemic-era openings after “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($260 million), “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” ($187 million) and “The Batman” ($134 million).

Audiences over 40 years old, the people who were top of mind when Paramount greenlit another “Top Gun,” turned out in force (55% of ticket buyers), which is impressive because it’s the demographic that has been the most reluctant to return to theaters. Still, the dazzling stunts in “Maverick” managed to entice a significant percentage of millennial moviegoers — 45% of people were 35 or younger — who were not alive when “Top Gun” opened 36 years ago. The film’s positive word of mouth should be helpful in continuing to reach younger crowds.

David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, called the film’s three-day figure “outstanding.”

“The source material remains strong, the execution is excellent, and Tom Cruise makes it work impeccably well,” he says.

Imax and 3D screens added to higher grosses for “Maverick,” with 22% of overall box office returns coming from premium formats. Imax alone is projected to contribute $21 million domestically and $32.5 million globally over the extended weekend.

“If you thought movies were dead, go see ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and then let me know what you think,” says Imax’s CEO Rich Gelfond. “This film heralds the return of the summer blockbuster and is a catalyst that will accelerate demand for moviegoing like an F-18 breaking the sound barrier. There’s no way you sit in a theatre, with a huge screen and chest-pounding speakers, and come away thinking there’s any other way you want to experience ‘Top Gun: Maverick.'”

“Top Gun: Maverick” continues a stellar box office streak for Paramount, marking the studio’s fifth movie this year to open in first place. Without the assistance of comic books or raging dinosaurs, the studio’s 2022 slate — also consisting of “Sonic the Hedgehog” ($182 million in North America), “The Lost City” ($102 million in North America), “Scream” ($81 million in North America) and “Jackass Forever” ($57 million in North America) — has resonated in theaters in a big way. It’s an impressive rebound since Paramount hardly released any movies during the pandemic, instead sending big titles like Chris Pratt’s “The Tomorrow War,” director Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and Eddie Murphy’s “Coming 2 America” to streaming services.

Despite countless delays (the “Top Gun” sequel was scheduled to open in the summer of 2020 until COVID-19 scrambled those plans), Cruise was adamant that “Maverick” not follow in the footsteps of those straight-to-streaming films. The two-year wait has already started to pay off since the film has been rapturously reviewed. It has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and a rare “A+” CinemaScore.

“I’m gratified we made this decision to hang on,” Paramount’s domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson says about keeping the film on the big screen. “This movie is going to have a huge run. It’s going to draw people to theaters who haven’t been in a long time.”

Joseph Kosinski directed the PG-13 “Top Gun: Maverick,” which picks up decades after the original and sees Maverick train a new group of cocky aviators for a crucial assignment. The cast includes Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly and Val Kilmer, who played Iceman in the first “Top Gun.”

“Top Gun: Maverick” also needs theaters to justify its hefty $170 million production budget, which does not include the tens of millions spent on promoting the movie to audiences worldwide. Those efforts included a splashy premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, which culminated with eight fighter jets flying over the Croisette (the French government paid for those). Skydance Media co-produced and co-financed the film.

Only one film, Disney and 20th Century’s “The Bob’s Burgers Movie,” was brave enough to open against “Top Gun: Maverick.” For a movie that’s based on a long-running animated TV show, “The Bob’s Burgers Movie” served up an impressive $12.6 million from 3,425 venues, enough for third place on box office charts. The well-reviewed movie should finish the long Memorial Day weekend with $15 million.

“The Bob’s Burgers Movie” landed just behind “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which dropped to No. 2 after three weeks atop domestic box office charts. Disney’s newest Marvel Cinematic Universe installment declined 50% to add $16.5 million from 3,805 cinemas in its fourth weekend of release. It’s expected to hit $21.1 million over the four-day frame. The superhero sequel, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, has generated $375 million in North America and a huge $868.7 million globally to date.

At No. 4, “Downton Abbey: A New Era” plunged 63% from its opening, collecting $5.9 million between Friday and Sunday. It’s estimated to earn $7.5 million from 3,830 theaters by Monday. After two weeks in theaters, the sequel to the big-screen continuation of the beloved British television show, has grossed $30 million in North America and $68.9 million worldwide. The follow-up film cost $40 million to produce, meaning the latest “Downton” adventure has ways to go before getting into the black.

Universal’s animated heist comedy “The Bad Guys” rounded out the top five with $4.6 million from 2,944 locations. By Monday, the family friendly film should rake in $6.1 million, which will bring its domestic tally to $82 million.

Without much on schedule until “Jurassic World: Dominion” on June 10, expect “Top Gun Maverick” to stay flying high over movie theater marquees.

Was Connor Cruise adopted?

Yes, Connor was adopted by the Eyes Wide Shut co-stars shortly after his birth in 1995.

Three years before adopting him, the former couple extended their family by adopting a girl named Isabella, who is now 28.

Both siblings stayed out of the spotlight and rarely posted any photos of themselves together with either parent.

It was reported that neither sibling would address their adoptive mother Nicole Kidman as their mom.

Connor and Isabella are the adoptive children from Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's marriage.

Who is Connor Cruise' mother?

Nicole Mary Kidman AC is a 54-year-old Australian actress and producer.

She was married to Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001.

The pair met while working on the movie Days of Thunder.

Although Nicole was only 21 at the time, she knew at once that she wanted to be with the Mission Impossible actor.

Their love story didn't last long and ended in 2001, after Cruise filed for divorce out of nowhere, and Kidman later revealed that he refused to attend counseling or to consider not divorcing.

Over the years there has been many speculations that once the divorce Nicole dismissed the children she had with cruise.

She clapped back in 2019, telling The Sun: "Motherhood is about the journey,

"There are going to be incredible peaks and valleys, whether you are an adopting mother or a birth mother. What a child needs is love."

Kidman is now happily married to the country singer, Keith Urban .

Tom Cruise Basically Got 'Top Gun: Maverick' Greenlit By Picking Up The Phone And Telling The Studio He Was Doing It

Posted: April 23, 2024 | Last updated: April 23, 2024

It’s become more common nowadays for popular movies to score sequels/follow-ups decades later. In fact, the most commercially successful movie of 2022 falls into this “legacyquel” category, with "Top Gun: Maverick" soaring over $1 billion worldwide on top of earning critical acclaim. So how did Tom Cruise arrange for his return to the role Pete “Maverick” Mitchell? According to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, it was as simple as calling Paramount Pictures and telling the studio he was doing it. I had the pleasure of speaking with Jerry Bruckheimer on behalf of the "Top Gun: Maverick" digital rollout. After noting how the sequel had been in development since 2010 and hit a setback when Tony Scott, the original "Top Gun’s" director who’d been slated to reprise his helming duties, died in 2012, I asked Bruckheimer at what point he and the other creative minds behind "Maverick" decided that it was still worth moving forward with the movie.

So Cruise was, naturally, a VIP guest at Victoria’s 50th birthday celebrations Saturday, where he wowed the crowd with his dance-floor moves .

The “Mission: Impossible” star joined guests including the Spice Girls , Gordon Ramsay, Eva Longoria and Salma Hayek Saturday night at London’s exclusive Oswald’s private members club.

The “Mission: Impossible” actor showed off his breakdancing skills and even did the splits for the “absolutely dumbfounded” crowd, according to the Daily Mail.

But his close friendship with the Beckhams goes back decades.

An industry source told Page Six, “The Beckhams were super close with Tom [for years] — they went to loads of parties at his house in LA.

“He is very, very charming. They were starstruck by him.”

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes pose with Victoria Beckham and David Beckham.

The couple actually met Cruise years before their move to Los Angeles in 2007, and another source who knows the couple said they were big fans.

According to Jenny Frankfurt , former manager to Victoria’s Spice Girls bandmate Geri Halliwell, the Beckhams had an array of photos of themselves with the star at their country home, dubbed Beckingham Palace.

Frankfurt wrote that, upon arriving at the estate in Hertfordshire, “There was a huge Christmas tree in the hall and several tables of photographs, one devoted completely to about 30 pictures of Victoria and David with Tom Cruise.”

Some industry sources said that devout Scientologist Cruise tried to talk to the couple about his church and they politely told him they were uninterested.

In his 2022 book, “ A Billion Years: My Escape From a Life in the Highest Ranks of Scientology ,” former high-ranking Scientology officer Mike Rinder claimed the church went to great expense trying to woo the Beckhams through Cruise.

“A professional-grade soccer pitch was constructed on the property at Gold [Base, church headquarters in San Jacinto, Calif.]. The ground was leveled, irrigation installed, perfect turf, goals raised,” Rinder wrote. “A full-time caretaker was appointed from the Gold staff … It was built for one purpose only: so Tom Cruise could woo his friend David to come to Gold. It never happened.”

Victoria Beckham talks to Tom Cruise, as Romeo Beckham sits on his grandma Sandra Beckham's lap.

A source who knows the couple denied they ever discussed Scientology with Cruise.

Victoria famously attended Cruise’s star-studded wedding to Katie Holmes — mother of his estranged daughter Suri Cruise — in Italy in 2006..

Cruise is a soccer fan and has been seen at many of David’s games.

And David once revealed that he turned to the Oscar nominee for advice on whether to leave Real Madrid and join LA Galaxy in a series of late-night phone calls.

Tom Cruise talks to Victoria Beckham - holding Cruz Beckham. Sandra Beckham holds Romeo Beckham.

“Obviously, I’d asked him for his advice as well because he’s a very wise man; he’s a very good friend of mine,” Beckham said at the time.

Cruise threw the Beckhams a lavish “Welcome to LA” party when they moved to the US.

Speaking in his Netflix documentary, “BECKHAM”, David reminisced, “The funny thing was, I was friends with Tom Cruise. I remember Tom turning round and saying, ‘me and Will are gonna throw you a party’. I was like ‘Will?’ and he said ‘Will Smith’.”

Tom Cruise holds Suri Cruise, with Katie Holmes next to him. Joined by Connor and Isabella Cruise. David Beckham holds Cruz Beckham, while Victoria Beckham holds hands with Brooklyn Beckham.

The party was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, with Cruise clearing the dance floor to recreate the choreography from his 1983 film “Risky Business.”

Despite rumors over the past few years, “There was never any falling out between them, not at all,” said the source of Cruise and the Beckhams. “They have always remained close and in contact.”

Another source who knows the couple said the friendship quieted down when the Beckhams left LA and David went to play in France, but they have grown closer now that they are all living mostly in the UK.

Top gun 3's biggest maverick twist would avoid tom cruise's $4 billion franchise curse.

Top Gun 3 could use a shocking Maverick twist to pull off something that even Tom Cruise's most successful franchise has never been able to do.

  • Top Gun 3 could replace Tom Cruise's beloved character, Maverick, with Miles Teller's Rooster as the new hero.
  • Mission: Impossible failed to replace Cruise's Ethan Hunt, making Top Gun 3's potential twist unique.
  • Killing off Maverick may be necessary for the franchise's longevity, as Cruise's presence dominates the series.

While Top Gun 3 may want to steer clear of one risky twist, this surprising reveal would allow the series to do something that Tom Cruise’s other franchise has never managed. For the longest time, it seemed like Top Gun would never spawn a profitable franchise. The original movie was a huge hit in 1986 and became a cult classic in the decades that followed, but its sequel spent an almost unprecedented 30 years in Development Hell before pre-production began in earnest. It was another six years before Top Gun: Maverick arrived, so hopes of the movie spawning another sequel were muted.

However, by Top Gun: Maverick ’s triumphant ending , it was clear that Tom Cruise had another huge series on his hands. Inevitably, Top Gun 3 was soon confirmed , although no release date has been announced for the sequel yet. Top Gun: Maverick ’s historic box office success proved that Maverick’s lengthy absence from the multiplex didn’t harm his popularity one bit, while the comparative under-performance of 2023’s Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One reaffirmed that the sequel was something special. Top Gun 3 ’s story could ensure that the series lasts a lot longer, but this will be risky.

Killing Off Maverick Would Let Top Gun Replace Him

Miles teller’s rooster could become the franchise’s new hero.

Top Gun 3 killing off Tom Cruise’s Maverick could allow the series to replace him , something that the actor’s other blockbuster franchise has never managed to pull off. Maverick dying wouldn’t be a huge shock in Top Gun 3 , especially after the original movie killed off Goose and Top Gun: Maverick killed off Iceman. These deaths proved that life as a Navy test pilot was risky and that Maverick’s age was catching up with him, two things that will still be true when Top Gun 3 brings Cruise’s antihero back to screens. Furthermore, Maverick isn’t exactly a risk-averse character.

Maverick’s Darkstar test flight was so dangerous that some viewers even hypothesized that he secretly died in Top Gun: Maverick ’s opening scene and the remainder of the movie was his dying dream. While this theory is a little extreme, there is no doubt that Maverick’s death would make perfect sense in Top Gun 3 . There is no reason for Top Gun 3 to rush into production while Cruise is still making Mission: Impossible sequels, and the character’s death grows more likely the older he gets. Meanwhile, Top Gun 3 already has a perfect Maverick replacement lined up in Miles Teller's Rooster.

Tom Cruise’s Other Major Series Couldn’t Replace Him

Mission: impossible failed to dethrone ethan hunt.

If Top Gun 3 does kill off Cruise’s character, this would be the first time that one of the actor’s blockbuster movie franchises has successfully replaced him. Cruise was technically replaced by Alan Ritchson in the role of Jack Reacher, but this only worked because the franchise changed from theatrical movies to an unrelated streaming series. In contrast, when Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol tried to establish Jeremy Renner’s Agent Brandt as a potential replacement for Cruise's Ethan Hun t, this effort ended in failure. Top Gun 3 could avoid this fate by killing off Maverick, something the Mission: Impossible movies never tried.

Killing off Maverick would ensure that Miles Teller’s Rooster could fill his role as the next movie’s protagonist. Much like Top Gun: Maverick ’s Iceman death gave Maverick a reason to grow and change, Maverick’s death could be the conduit for Rooster becoming a leader. One of the main reasons that Renner’s Brandt failed to convince as an action hero in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol was that Cruise’s Hunt remained a more interesting, dynamic character throughout the sequel. To give Rooster a real shot at headlining the series, Cruise’s character couldn’t remain a presence in the franchise.

Top Gun 3 Can’t Replace Maverick Without Killing Him

Cruise’s best franchises couldn’t make him a supporting star.

Cruise is a leading man and, as such, Mission: Impossible and Top Gun would both be unable to replace him without killing off his character. Since Top Gun: Maverick gave Maverick a happy ending , Top Gun 3 could always retire the character and see Rooster replace him as a teacher for young recruits. However, it would be hard to get viewers invested in Rooster’s story if Cruise’s Maverick was still around. Maverick is the center of the Top Gun franchise’s universe, with both of the original movies focusing on his character arc.

This means that Top Gun 3 killing off Cruise is the only way to replace Maverick . However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the series needs to take this approach. Maverick could remain the star of the series, especially given how enduringly popular the Mission: Impossible movies are. Although the franchise’s most recent outing underperformed financially, the series remains a critical darling. As such, Top Gun 3 may end up keeping Cruise around thanks to his persistent popularity.

Entertainment | the latest | pecker says he wanted to keep tabloid’s agreement with trump ‘as quiet as possible’, entertainment, entertainment | tom cruise’s daughter suri will soon be free to talk about their estrangement and scientology: report, with suri cruise turning 18 this week, she should be free to speak out about her father, his beliefs and their rift, a scientology expert says in a new report.

Tom Cruise’s three ex-wives, Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes, probably would have a lot to say about being married to the famously intense mega-star and their time inside his beloved Church of Scientology.

But these women have mostly kept Cruise’s secrets, with experts in the inner workings of Scientology saying that Kidman and Holmes, in particular, probably signed non-disclosure agreements when their marriages to the “Top Gun” actor ended.

But no such agreement probably applies to Cruise’s youngest child, Suri Cruise, from whom he’s long been estranged, Page Six reported . With Suri turning 18 on Thursday, she and her mother Katie Holmes should no longer receive the reported $400,000 a year Cruise paid as part of a divorce settlement. Cruise also agreed to pay Suri’s college and health care costs, Page Six added.

As an adult, Suri Cruise should be free to speak out about her father, his beliefs and their rift, journalist and Scientology expert Tony Ortega told Page Six.

“Suri would have been too young to sign any agreement (when her parents divorced in 2012), but she will now be free to talk if she wants to and it’s going to be really interesting if she has something to say,” Ortega said.

Page Six said that representatives for Cruise, Holmes and the Church of Scientology did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

It’s possible that Suri may choose to stay silent about her famous father. For one thing, if she gave an interview or published a tell-all about him, she’d probably have to give up the mostly private life she’s been able to enjoy thus far. People credit a protective Holmes with trying to give Suri as normal life as is possible under the circumstances, while raising her in New York City.

“Katie has safeguarded Suri and she’s a devoted mom,” a source told Page Six. “This is a girl who is a private citizen. She hasn’t lived her life in public.”

Suri’s life, though, started out in a very public way. As Page Six pointed out, she was once “the most famous baby in America” because of the very high-profile way that Cruise conducted his courtship of the “Dawson’s Creek” star, who was 16 years younger that Cruise when they began dating. When news came that Cruise and Holmes had become parents to a baby daughter in April 2006, a global frenzy erupted, with media outlets competing to be the first to publish the little girl’s photos.

At the age of five months, Suri Cruise made her debut on the cover of Vanity Fair, in a glossy photo taken by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz.

For the first six years of Suri’s life, Cruise seemed to dote on his youngest daughter and enjoy being seen with her in public. He also is the father of two older children, Isabella, now 31, and Connor Cruise, now 29, whom he adopted with Kidman.

But Suri’s relationship with her father changed after Holmes reportedly “blindsided” him by filing for divorce in 2012. The following year, Cruise gave a deposition in his $50 million court fight against a pair of tabloid magazines and admitted that Holmes filed for divorce “to protect Suri from Scientology,” court documents revealed, Page Six reported.

There have been questions about whether Holmes and her daughter were declared Scientology “suppressive persons,” or SPs, after the divorce. According to Scientology , SPs are people who have “anti-social” personalities who seek to “upset, continuously undermine, spread bad news about and denigrate betterment activities and groups.” Scientology recommends that members stay away from SPs for their own well-being, but the church’s own website said it is “extremely rare” to label someone an SP.

“We don’t know for sure if Katie was ever declared an SP,” Ortega told Page Six. A regular church member, whose wife and daughter left Scientology, would be encouraged to disconnect from them, but Cruise might have been spared that option because of his “top celebrity” status. “He gets to ignore all this stuff,” Ortega said.

In any case, Holmes secured sole custody of their daughter, while Cruise retained “meaningful” visitation rights, according to The Blast . Yet, public sightings of Cruise with his daughter soon dwindled, with Page Six saying they were last seen together at Disney World in the summer of 2012.

Even if Suri has lived a mostly private life, paparazzi are known to follow her and her mother Katie Holmes around the streets of Manhattan. Still, as Suri reportedly prepares to head off to college, Holmes revealed in a 2023 interview with Glamour that she has grown up to be “an incredible person.”

Suri Cruise showcases special bond with mom Katie Holmes after dad Tom Cruise missed her 18th birthday celebrations

Katie Holmes was seen out and about in New York City with her daughter,  Suri Cruise on Monday enjoying a leisurely stroll and a coffee run. This outing marked their first public appearance together since Suri's milestone 18th birthday.

On Monday morning, the mother-daughter duo showcased their effortless style and the special bond they share together. Suri, who just celebrated her birthday on April 18, looked chic in a patterned maxi dress adorned with red tassels at the hem.

She paired this with a cozy, oatmeal-colored cardigan and an oversized denim jacket, perfect for the city's unpredictable spring weather. The birthday girl completed her look with a natural, makeup-free face, letting her youthful beauty shine through.

Katie opted for a casual yet sophisticated ensemble. She wore a pinstriped button-down shirt under a snug gray sweater, which she teamed with wide-leg jeans for a touch of urban cool.

Black suede shoes, a matching leather tote, and oversized sunglasses added just the right amount of glamour to her laid-back outfit, while her hair was effortlessly styled in a messy ponytail.

The pair seemed deeply engrossed in conversation as they walked through the city, enjoying each other's company visibly. Over the weekend leading up to her birthday, Suri was seen picking up flowers, likely in preparation for her celebrations.

Katie Holmes and her daughter Suri Cruise were seen enjoying a stroll together in NYC for the first time since Suri turned 18.

It appeared to be a low-key affair, with no signs of her estranged father, Tom Cruise, in attendance. Suri is thought to have celebrated more over the weekend with her mom, while Tom was pictured in London at another milestone birthday party.

Tom was one of the many celebrity guests at Victoria Beckham's 50th birthday , which was held at Oswald's.

Tom was all smiles in a number of photos posted on the night, looking smart in a tuxedo. As well as Suri, Tom is also father to adopted grown-up children, Isabella 'Bella', 31, and Connor, 29, who he shares with ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

Bella lives in London and has a close relationship with her dad, having been spotted out showing her support for him on numerous occasions by wearing various Top Gun T-shirts, a nod to her dad's film.

None of Tom's children have spoken out about their relationship with their dad in recent years and the actor is incredibly private when it comes to his personal life.

Suri's relationship with her father has been the subject of public speculation for years. Following Katie and Tom's divorce in 2012, Suri has grown up mostly away from the spotlight of her father's world and his involvement in Scientology.

This estrangement seems to have solidified over the years, and with Suri now turning 18 — officially an adult — she holds the reins to her own life more firmly than ever.

With her 18th birthday, Suri not only steps into adulthood but also moves beyond the legal bindings that once tied her to her father through child support arrangements.

Reports suggest Tom was contributing $400,000 a year in child support, a figure that is no longer required now that Suri is legally an adult.
