Biking in Lancaster County – Enjoy Miles of Back Country Roads
Lancaster’s Back Roads Are Calling All Bicyclists
Although Lancaster County back roads may not be ideal for large vehicles, such as tractor trailers, throughout the year these winding, little-traveled Lancaster roads can be a bicyclist’s dream.
See Biking Businesses Below » (click here)
Here you can hit the open road and get away from congested traffic and businesses. Most of the back country roads in Lancaster County are open fields and farmlands. Ride at your own pace and listen to the quiet as you ride past Amish farmlands and open fields.
Along the way you’re likely to discover many scenic sights and encounter rural Lancaster life first hand. Be on the lookout for one-room schoolhouses , covered bridges , Amish farmers in their fields, and Amish in-home businesses selling anything from quilts and craft items to baked goods and home-made root beer. Bicycling allows you to set your own pace and stop at road-side stands, talk to the animals, and take lots of photographs (please respect the privacy of our Amish neighbors who don’t appreciate having their pictures taken).
If you’re riding roads that are shared by Amish or Mennonite buggies, mix common sense with caution. You may well be riding faster than they are, so when you pass a buggy make sure the road ahead is clear, and leave plenty of room ahead of the horse before you pull back over into your lane. You don’t want to startle the fella. Also, keep in mind that these buggies often don’t use turn signals when turning onto farm lanes. They may turn suddenly in front of you with no warning. And often the buggies won’t come to a complete stop at stop signs. They may only slow down. Just be alert.
Also, be aware that along the way you may encounter road apples (horse droppings) that may have been deposited on the road in front of you.
When approaching a covered bridge keep in mind that these are one-lane bridges. Watch for approaching traffic from the other direction.
The Lancaster County terrain is generally flat. The more challenging hilly areas lie south of Strasburg and Route 741. Stay off the numbered highways and you may have many of these scenic roadways almost all to yourself.

DOOR COUNTY TOUR
Bike Tour of Wisconsin’s Green Bay, Lake Michigan, Door County
Door county, a beautiful bike tour of the martha’s vineyard of the midwest.
With the blue waters of Green Bay to the west and Lake Michigan on the north, east, and south, Wisconsin's Door County is a 75 mile long peninsula of dramatic limestone cliff faces, white sand dune lined lakeshores and abundant pristine water views. Interspersed through the splendid natural scenery are inviting small towns and villages—each one charmingly different from the next. Well-kept dairy farms and cherry and apple orchards dot the horizon with their ever-present red barns. No matter where you are, the wealth of rural or water views and fabulous lightly traveled roads create perfect conditions for cyclists of all abilities. Come with us to find out why Door County, WI has earned the nickname, “the Martha’s Vineyard of the Midwest!”
The terrain is a mix of gently rolling hills and flat terrain, making it accessible to all ability levels. Road bikes and hybrid style bikes are both appropriate. This 6 day tour offers routes of 25-50+ miles each day (at your option). Less ambitious cyclists can take advantage of short cuts and "leap frog" van shuttles along the route to tailor the route to their needs.

Itinerary Download Itinerary
The trip begins in Green Bay, at a brand new hotel next to Lambeau Field. Arrive early to take the tour of Lambeau and the Green Bay Packers Museum and Hall of Fame.
Our group will meet in the early afternoon to allow time for a casual spin ride hugging the shore of the Fox River and offering beautiful views of St. Norbert College, popular local fishing spots, the De Pere historic locks and dam, and quintessential Wisconsin countryside. We will reconvene in the early evening for dinner as a group. Lodge Kohler, our AAA Four Diamond home for the night, is home to a rooftop bar overlooking Lambeau Field, and a fine restaurant.
After a breakfast on the banks of the Fox River, we will head into the heart of Door County. Our day's ride will start in an area of Door County known as Southern Door and will take us north through gently rolling fields through the heart of what was once the largest concentration of Belgian communities in the New World. Along the route, see beautiful barns, rolling fields, and the ever-present water views of Green Bay.
After lunch en route, we will spend time in the afternoon exploring one of Door County's jewels, Potowatomi State Park. The park is named for one of the tribes that inhabited Green Bay’s shores when the Europeans first arrived. They called themselves Bo-De-Wad-Me, meaning “keeper of the fire.” The tribal name and spelling were changed over time on maps to become Potowatomi. Walk one of the many shaded birch-lined trails. Watch the deer graze and hawks soar above the tree lined lakeside cliffs that form the western edge of the Niagra Escarpment stretching from Wisconsin to New York. Or, just take in the panoramic view from atop a 75-foot observation tower. On clear days, you can see 16 miles across the majestic waters of Green Bay from its 225 feet high vantage point above the water.
We end our day today in the charming town of Sturgeon Bay. Named Wisconsin’s friendliest small town, Sturgeon Bay is the county seat of Door County and the only city on the peninsula. Settled in 1835, its economy originally was based on lumbering. That changed, however, when the canal linking Green Bay and Lake Michigan opened to shipping in 1881 and altered the economy of the town of Sturgeon Bay.
We will spend our evening at the Stone Harbor Resort on the shores of Sturgeon Bay. Savor the sunset views before dinner as a group this evening at one of the many charming options in town.
Our morning starts with a ride heading east along the shipping canal connecting Green Bay and Lake Michigan, before turning north along the shoreline of Lake Michigan. At this point, take a moment to see two of Door County's eleven lighthouses. Many of Wisconsin’s early settlers came by Great Lakes steamships. These shipping lines eventually petitioned the US Government to commission lighthouses along the dangerous rocky shoreline of Lake Michigan.
Our ride continues, winding along the lake shore, catching glimpses of the water between unique waterfront homes and cottages. Spend a few miles spinning lakeside, and then head inland to ride through some of Door County's many orchards. We will be visiting during the heart of Door County’s cherry season. Roads sprinkled with cherry trees greet us with shiny red globes of fruit peeking out from beneath the green leaves. We might even see some harvesting in progress with mechanized “tree shakers” able to harvest 4 trees per minute!
We will lunch this afternoon at a local winery, where you can choose to stay and sample wines, possibly including a vintage or two of cherry wine. Or, you may continue pedaling to the picturesque town of Fish Creek, our home for the next three nights. The afternoon is yours to explore nearby Peninsula State Park, charter a fishing boat to try your hand at catching the local walleye, pike, trout or salmon, or wander the flower box lined streets and shops of charismatic Fish Creek.
Our home in Fish Creek is the elegant White Gull Inn. Settle in prior to enjoying dinner on your own at one of the many options Fish Creek has to offer.
Today is a cyclist’s dream day! We make our way to the largest island in Door County, Washington Island. Once home to large fishing operations, the island now houses only 650 residents year-round creating an ideal cycling destination filled with miles of quiet roads. Opt to bike or shuttle to the 30-minute ferry that will take us to the island across the strait after which Door County was named. Originally named by early French explorers as Porte Des Mortes, meaning "Door of Death", the strait was known for its treacherous currents and climate which caused many early navigators to be lost in the strait. Upon our safe arrival on the island, we will spin along empty scenic roads, catching views of the lake, surrounding islands, and sleepy island villages. Watch for fishing pelicans soaring above the water as we pedal the roads along the rocky shoreline.
After lunch in the early afternoon at one of the local gourmet eateries, we will make our way back toward Fish Creek via the road network winding its way through Northern Door County. The “Top of the Thumb” is highlighted by the communities of Ellison Bay, Rowleys Bay and Gills Rock. These charming villages are home to an abundance of small museums, artists’ galleries, shops and restaurants. In between is quintessential Door scenery. We will reconvene this evening to recount the day’s adventures and tell stories of our successful navigation through the “Porte Des Mortes” prior to dinner on your own in yet another wonderful option in Fish Creek.
We begin our day today with yet another bountiful White Gull Inn breakfast – perhaps their award-winning cherry stuffed French toast! Today is a day to take advantage of the spectacular views offered in nearby Peninsula State Park. Gentle climbs are rewarded by bluff top views of sparkling Lake Michigan and descents to the sandy beaches along the shoreline. There is an option to continue pedaling a short distance to lunch in the quaint fishing town of Bailey's Harbor. Named for a ship captain who took refuge from a violent 1840’s storm in the natural cove which defines the village waterfront, the appealing town of Bailey’s Harbor has a mix of shops and galleries to explore. Along our route returning to Fish Creek, take a minute to stop at the Edgewater Gallery sculpture garden - a worthwhile stop even if art is not "your thing." The late afternoon is yours to enjoy strolling the charming streets of Fish Creek before we finish our evening with dinner as a group.
Our final day returns us to Green Bay. After a brief van shuttle, we will bike from Brussels, WI all the back to Lodge Kohler on a mix of low traffic roads and paved paths. Scenery includes the shore of Green Bay and pastoral Wisconsin farmland. Lodge Kohler will provide rooms for showers and a champions’ lunch prior to departure.

Day One - Napa to Calistoga
The Intermediate ride starts with a van transfer to the town of Napa from where you meander up the gently-rolling Napa Valley. Much of today’s riding is along the Silverado Trail with a winery every mile or so: from the world-renowned Stags Leap to the art-laden Clos Pegase. Along the way you have opportunities for lunch in Yountville, Oakville, or at a winery. With the easy terrain and numerous wineries to stop at, this route provides a gentle introduction to your tour.
Leisure riders will be transferred to Yountville or Rutherford, a little further along the route described above.
Challenge riders explore the mountains around the Napa Valley along scenic, car-free lanes. Mount Veeder to the west and Howell Mountain to the east include plenty of tough-but-scenic climbing as well as spectacular views across the Napa Valley.
Ride across the vine- carpeted Napa Valley; cycling on the Silverado Trail with a winery every mile
RIDE OPTIONS
Leisure 20 miles with 900 feet of climbing
Intermediate 30 miles with 1,200 feet
Challenge 50 miles with 4,400 feet
OVERNIGHT TOWN
Calistoga is a laid-back spa town with hot springs and mud baths. The town is well preserved and authentic. In 2001, it was designated a Distinctive Destination by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Fast-food franchises are banned in the town by law.
Day Two - Calistoga to Healdsburg
The Intermediate route takes you through a series of valleys where you cycle past mixed-tree woodland and fertile vineyards. Most of the wineries you pass are in the Alexander Valley. Even if you are not planning to taste, these oases are great places to enjoy a picnic or simply rest in the shade of an oak tree. From here, it’s an easy cruise across into the Dry Creek Valley and onto Healdsburg – your final destination.
Leisure riders will take a van transfer over the first two climbs of the day to join the route described above at the start of the Alexander Valley.
Challenge riders follow the Intermediate route to the Alexander Valley but add on a fun in-and-out climb up the badly-named Pine Flat Road – a local classic.
The Epic route also follows the Intermediate route to the Alexander Valley from where it heads into the mountains for a roller-coaster ride along Geysers Rd to Cloverdale. You are rewarded with some of the best advanced cycling in California: tough climbing, impressive panoramas, and very little traffic.
The vineyards of the Alexander Valley provide perfect oases in which to enjoy a relaxed picnic.
Leisure 10 miles with 210 feet of climbing
Intermediate 30 miles with 1,275 feet
Challenge 50 miles with 4,800 feet
Epic 70 miles with 5,500 feet
Healdsburg is a prosperous but relaxed town centered on a shady plaza complete with a bandstand. The plaza hosts regular concerts and a farmers market. The town also has several bookstores, antique stores, and tasting rooms as well as many great restaurants.
Day Three - Healdsburg Loops (A)
Today’s Intermediate route takes you into the Dry Creek Valley. From here, you look out across acres of vines with the Mayacamas Mountains framing the scene. In short, you will enjoy some truly classic wine country riding on back roads that snake past small farms and family-run wineries. Many guests collect a picnic lunch at the Dry Creek General Store to enjoy with a tasting in the gardens of one of the many vineyards. If you buy a bottle or two, let us know and we will collect them for you.
Leisure riders do a slightly shorter version of the Dry Creek loop described above – focusing on the southern portion.
Challenge riders head across to the Alexander Valley and then into the mountains following a classic route for local riders past active geysers to Cloverdale and then back through the Dry Creek Valley.
The Epic route follows the intermediate route to the end of the Dry Creek Valley but rather than turning around it continues along remote roads deep into the Coast Range. The route returns to Healdsburg alongside the Russian River.

Leisure 15 miles with 500 feet of climbing
Leisure/Intermediate 30 miles with 1,150 feet
Challenge 55 miles with 4,600 feet
Epic 100 miles with 8,800 feet
Healdsburg is a prosperous but relaxed town centered on a shady plaza complete with a bandstand. The plaza hosts regular concerts and a farmers market. The town also has several bookstores, antique stores , and tasting rooms as well as many great restaurants.
Day Four - Healdsburg to Guerneville
The Intermediate route has 30 miles of fantastic wine country riding on scenic lanes that meander through the vineyards of the Dry Creek Valley before heading over a low pass into the Russian River Valley. Here you experience cycling in the shade of giant redwoods before arriving at the hippie town of Guerneville. This is a good day to do some wine tasting – maybe taking a picnic to enjoy at one of the many wineries.
Leisure riders follow the above route except for cutting off the initial loop through the Dry Creek Valley.
Challenge riders also follow the Intermediate route above but add in a hilly detour that tests the legs with steep climbs high above the valleys on car free roads with stunning views across high, alpine meadows.
The Epic route heads into the Dry Creek Valley from where it continues along remote roads deep into the Coast Range. Here, you ride for almost 50 miles without seeing cars, towns or any other sign of civilization.

Leisure 20 miles with 800 feet of climbing
Challenge 40 miles with 2,300 feet
Epic 85 miles with 8,100 feet
Guerneville
Guerneville is an old logging town picturesquely set on the banks of the Russian River. It is the gateway town to the stunning Armstrong Woods and, while the town is more modest than Healdsburg (Guerneville has a vibrant alternative community), it still has a number of excellent restaurants.
Day Five - Guerneville Loops
The Intermediate route loops between Guerneville and Occidental – and back again. Most of the riding is on gentle back roads in the shade of the forest but there are also a number of short-steep sections – just to help build up a healthy appetite for lunch!
Leisure riders will head straight to the Armstrong Woods State Reserve to ride and hike in the shade of 1400-year-old redwood trees.
Challenge riders follow the Intermediate route to Occidental and then push into the Coast Mountains and down to the ocean. The route follows one of the classic climbs of the Tour of California bike race with views down to the Pacific Ocean. There are also great non-cycling options today. You can take a kayaking trip along the Russian River to where the river emerges into the Pacific Ocean. There are also great hiking or horseback trails that take you through the towering redwoods of the Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve up to the high alpine pastures of the Austin Creek State Park.

Day Six - Guerneville to Bodega Bay
The Intermediate route starts with a gentle descent alongside the Russian River before taking a scenic detour through the Redwoods to the small town of Cazadero: “The Heart of the Redwoods.” A short descent from here brings you to the Pacific Ocean where families of seals bask in the sun. After lunch in Jenner, you enjoy some classic Californian coastal riding south to Bodega Bay. Typically, the wind is at your back as you cycle past mile after mile of pristine coastline; all under the protection of the Sonoma Coast State Beach. Your tour ends in Bodega Bay overlooking the small fishing port.
Leisure riders will follow the Intermediate route to the Pacific Ocean where their tour ends in the small town of Jenner. There is also a shorter option available for those with less time.
Challenge riders follow the Intermediate route to Cazadero from where they head into the Coast Range before emerging from the trees, high above the Pacific Ocean. From here, you have stunning views down the coast and a fast sweeping descent into Jenner – where you rejoin the Intermediate route.

Mix & Match
You can choose accommodation in different categories in different towns. Please ask for prices.
Embrace The philosophy at Embrace is to blend old-world luxury with 21st century amenities. Built in 1873, the property is located in the heart of Calistoga and has a large wraparound porch; ideal for watching the world go by after a day’s riding, enjoying complimentary wine and cheese, and where you will eat an outstanding breakfast.
Applewood Inn – Queen The Applewood Inn is a casually luxurious hotel in its own grounds, a short walk from the center of town. The hotel has private massage rooms as well as many quiet places to relax. The Inn also has a nice restaurant (closed Mondays and Tuesdays). Rooms in this category are standard (cosy) queen rooms.
Properties in the Classic category are typically smaller hotels or luxurious B&Bs with very personal service sometimes including wine tasting or evening hors d’oeuvres.
Solage Solage is the sister property to the prestigious Auberge du Soleil. It is set in private grounds just east of Calistoga with a trendy bistro, full-service spa and a 130-foot swimming pool. The resort is designed to be environmentally friendly and low impact. In short, it’s a stylish destination that invites guests to relax and enjoy great food.
Hotel Healdsburg Hotel Healdsburg is designed and decorated in the modern-minimalist style of boutique hotels; SoHo Grand comes to small town America. The hotel has excellent spa facilities and the restaurant, The Dry Creek Kitchen, is one of the best restaurants in town.
Applewood Inn – Suite The Applewood Inn is a casually luxurious hotel in its own grounds a short walk from the center of town. The hotel has private massage rooms as well as many quiet places to relax. The Inn also has a nice restaurant (closed Mondays and Tuesdays). Rooms, in this Luxury category, are spacious suites with fireplaces and some have small terraces.
Properties in our Luxury category are some of the nicest full-service hotels in the area. They typically include spa facilities and a good restaurant.
BIKE CHOICES
Hybrid bike.
Hybrids bikes are a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. They have a relaxed riding position and are great for beginners and intermediate riders. A typical model is the Trek 7.3 FX with Shimano components and high-pressure road tires for better cycling efficiency than your typical hybrid.
Our road bikes are a racing style bike with drop handlebars. The road bikes are faster bikes than the hybrids with less upright riding position. A typical model is the Émonda ALR 5 with aluminum frame, carbon forks, and Shimano 105 components. (NOTE: Some of the smaller roads in Puglia can be a little rough making a hybrid bikes a better choice for some riders.)
Our eBikes are designed to give you a little extra assistance when climbing hills. The ride position is very similar to our hybrids. We typically rent Scott E-Sub equipped with a 250W E-drive Bosch motor. If one rider in a couple is stronger than the other, an eBike can be a great choice for the less-strong rider.
If you have a favorite bike, we can help you get it to your destination as well as set it up once it is there. Please ask about options for bike shipping and assembly.
Receiving & Assembly per bike charge to receive bike from shipper, assemble the bike and repack it and deliver it to a shipper at the end of the tour.
Bike Boxes a per box charge for the extra logistics needed to handle bike boxes during a tour. Note: this fee can be avoided if you leave your box with your start/end hotel.
Tandem Bike a per bike fee for the extra logistics to handle a tandem bike that is brought by a guest.

Biking & Bike Trails in Door County
Pedal on roads, highways, & forest trails.
One of the best ways to get out and see Door County in all its splendor is with two wheels and a set of handlebars. Whether casually ambling through town to get a sense of place or seeking a high-adrenaline challenge on an off-road bike trail, you can get your biking fix up here. Rent a bike or bring your own and explore some of the top bike trails Wisconsin has to offer.
Door County Biking Trail Conditions
Gearing up for a day of trail biking in a Door County state park? Check the Trail Report to confirm the trails are in good shape before heading out.
Best Door County Bike Rides
Glidden Drive Glidden Drive takes cyclists along the eastern shoreline, starting just south of Whitefish Dunes State Park. The total ride is about six miles, but if you're looking for additional mileage you can switch over to County Road T or TT and ride west toward Sturgeon Bay, where you'll be treated to views of the canal.
Bay Shore Drive This smooth, paved route is approximately 13 miles long and hugs the western shoreline as it takes bikers from Sunset Park in Sturgeon Bay to Frank E. Murphy Park in Egg Harbor.
County Road Q County Road Q begins a little north of Bailey’s Harbor, not far from The Ridges. Take this forested route north, winding past the Mud Lake State Wildlife Area, Moonlight Bay, North Bay, and more, eventually letting out in Ephraim. The entire stretch is about nine miles and has multiple view points for admiring the lake, including the turn off for access to Cana Island.
Washington Island Bring your bike and hop the ferry to this island with 100 miles of pavement to explore. If you don't have a bike, you can rent one on the island. Plan your route around seeing historic churches, beaches, lavender fields, lake views, and deep green forest.
Door County Bike Trails
Newport State Park Newport State Park has seven bike-friendly trails that provide views of Lake Michigan, Europe Lake, Rowley's Bay, islands, cliffs, and forest. Newport's biking trails can get muddy and rocky, so be ready to do some work.
Peninsula State Park Between the 9.6-mile Sunset Bike Route and an additional 12 miles of rugged off-road terrain, Peninsula State Park is a huge cycling destination in Wisconsin. The park offers bike rentals for both kids and adults.
Potawatomi State Park Bike across eight miles of off-road trails with varied terrain and forest and lake views. Cyclists may also bike on any park roads.
Whitefish Dunes State Park The Red Trail in this lakeside park has five miles of packed biking trail. You'll pass by forests, sand dunes, including Old Baldy, the tallest sand dune in the park.
Ahnapee Trail This historic trail begins in Sturgeon Bay and runs for about 48 miles, taking you past two rivers, several towns, and a mix of farmland, prairies, forest, woods, and wildlife.
Leave No Trace: Biking Basics
Know Before You Go Whether on the road or on the trail, always wear a helmet and other appropriate safety gear. Keep your group, yourself, and others safe by always riding in control and within your group’s limits. On the road, ride with the flow of traffic and be aware of your surroundings. Stay out of drivers' blind spots, especially at traffic lights or stop signs.
Share the Trails and Roads When biking in Door County, stick to durable surfaces, including established trails, dirt roads, and pavement. Riding off the trail, especially to avoid wet or muddy areas, can cause erosion and damage vegetation. Sticking to established trails and roads will also help prevent riders from disturbing wildlife.
Respect other trail and road users and protect the quality of their experience. Yield to hikers and equestrians. Be prepared to stop and dismount if the trail is narrow or crowded. On the trail, yield to uphill traveling cyclists when descending. When encountering slower traffic, announce your presence with a friendly greeting or bell to avoid startling other visitors. Share the road and ride single file so that cars can pass.

The beautiful and scenic tour, just what we were hoping for. Stopped at 3 very nice wineries
Our guide was such a nice young man! Helped us get our bikes and helmets set and off we went! A beautiful and scenic tour, just what we were hoping for.
There’s no better way to see the Sonoma wineries! This was such a good way to enjoy the outdoor aspects of Sonoma as well.
Dave and his son took our group of ten to three wineries in the Dry Creek Valley and we had the best day. Everything was perfect, from the details he had for us at each of our stops to the delicious lunch.
Don’t just take our word for it.
