More information

Public transport and parking.

The cruise terminals of the Port of Barcelona are perfectly communicated. Those of the World Trade Center are a step away from the public transport network and those of the Adossat pier have a shuttle bus service (T-3 PORTBUS: €3 one-way ticket / €4 return ticket) that connects them with the city centre. Although access by private vehicles is allowed to drop off or pick up passengers and luggage, parking is not allowed.

There are parking lots available in the port area and surroundings.

Barcelona cruise pier transportation

Complete Barcelona to cruise port transportation guide

How to get to barcelona cruise port & more.

Barcelona cruise ship port: Aida ship

The first thing you'll need to figure out is your pier. Large ships usually moor at Moll Adossat , which has 5 terminals. Smaller ships stop at Moll de Barcelona / World Trade Center. There's also 2 more terminals for ferries and one for large yatchs, but we won't be covering them in this post. You can ask your cruiseline what pier they use in Barcelona, or you can check the Barcelona Cruise Port Calendar . For everything else, this post will give you all the information you need.

Transportation to Barcelona cruise port and from it

Walking, not a good idea.

The port of Barcelona is basically divided in two cruise piers. While passengers from small ships such as Windstar and Aida stop at the WTC Barcelona Cruise Terminal that is only 5min. walk from the Statue of Columbus, where la Rambla begins, most large cruises stop in the Moll Adossat terminals and from there you need to cross the Porta d’Europa, the longest port bridge in Europe.

I don’t recommend trying to walk across the bridge, as it’ll take you some good 30 min. to get to la Rambla (under the hot Barcelona sun and with no shade to stop under… Trust me, I’ve done it and won’t repeat it again!). Anyway, after crossing the bridge you can walk up la Rambla and see the Gothic Quarter . You might even reach Passeig de Gràcia where the Gaudi apartments are, but you’ll need strong legs to do that!

BEST FOR : Small ships docking in Moll de Barcelona.

The ride from Moll Adossat to Columbus statue is 10 minutes long. The Cruise Buses don’t accept Barcelona transportation cards: you’ll have to pay for the bus one-way ticket, which is affordable enough. Once in the city, we don’t recommend trying to navigate the city buses, as the subway will take you pretty much everywhere you want to see.

BEST FOR : Ships docking in Moll Adossat, if your budget is limited.

Hop on Hop off Buses

There’s a stop near Columbus Statue. You can purchase them on board, or buy them online and then exchange them at the Tourist Information Point underneath Columbus Statue. Keep in mind that Hop-on Hop-off buses follow a unidirectional itinerary that takes 2 to 3 hours to get back to where you started if you stay on the bus all the time. If your time in Barcelona is limited, don’t plan to hop-off and on or you’ll be wasting to much time and you’ll risk having to hop on a taxi and rush back to the cruise port if you didn’t plan enough buffer time.

BEST FOR : People with low energy levels or walking issues on a budget.

There is no  subway  station in the Barcelona cruise port: you’ll have to get in town to use it. The closest subway station is called Drassanes, in the L3 line (green). It’ll ride you all along la Rambla and Passeig de Gràcia, and if you are ready for a walk uphill, the Vallcarca station it’s a 20min. walk to the  Park Güell .

The same line takes you to Espanya and Parallel, from where you can access the hill of Montjuic (although if you only have a few hours and are on foot, I’d rather skip that part of the city).  You’ll need to change lines to get to the famous Sagrada Familia church (go to Paral·lel, and from there switch to the Pink Line (L2).

BEST FOR : Travelers on a budget that are used to navigating public transportation.

BEST FOR : Any situation, from sightseeing to getting to your hotel or train station with luggage.

Is there Uber in Barcelona?

Technically yes, but all the Uber drivers in Spain must have a taxi license, and since the taxi lobby considers Uber (and Cabify and Bolt) unfair competition, they tend to boycott it by not joining their platform. As a result, there’s very few drivers available on the app, and the wait times are long. We recommend to stick to regular black and yellow taxis, and if you need to use an app to call one, use alternatives such as Free Now or Picmi.

Private drivers

A private driver is the premium way to get to the Barcelona Cruise Port, or to exit it. Private drivers in Spain must have a special professional license and insurance, their cars must have a blue plate, and must comply with high quality standards. The ones we use, for instance, are all recent models of Mercedes vehicles, either cars or vans. A driver will be waiting for you at the exit of the cruise terminal, holding a sign with your name. With them, it’ll be a breeze to get to the airport, train station or your hotel.

BEST FOR : Premium transfers to hotel, airport or train station.

Can they give you a tour of the city before dropping you off?

They certainly can, but bear in mind that in Spain you need different licensed to drive cars and to work as a tour guide. A licensed tour guide is trained to give you detailed explanations of the sites and can skip lines when taking you inside. Instead, drivers most of the time only have basic knowledge about the city (or parrot what they’ve heard licensed tour guides explain, without having really studied it), and must stay by their vehicles when you are out and about exploring a site or area on your own.

Private shore excursions

While usually a shore excursion organized by the ship is shared with dozens of other cruisers, and start and end in the cruise, private shore excursions are just for you and your party only, and they can start or end anywhere you want. During a private shore excursion you get not just a private driver but also a licensed tour guide to show you around. You can decide on the exact itinerary, and if necessary, they can start or finish at the airport, your hotel or the train station.

A private shore excursion is the easiest way to exit the Barcelona Cruise Port , and you will also take the most out of your short time in the city. Certainly it is more expensive if you are only two people, but if you are traveling with some more friends or family, the price becomes quite reasonable compared to joining one of the group tours offered by the ship.  Small groups move faster than large tours, so you’ll get see more things in the same amount of time!

BEST FOR : Premium travelers that want to maximize their time in Barcelona and don’t want to have to deal with organizing details.

Park Guell Sagrada Familia Montjuic Tour

Transportation from Barcelona cruise port to airport (or viceversa)

Is taking public transportation a good idea, taxis, private drivers and private tours.

There’s a set fee of €39 for taxi rides from the Barcelona cruise port to airport (you can check here to make sure this is updated). A private transfer can cost 2 to 3 times more, but you pay for the premium level of comfort (eliminate waiting times, high end vehicles, English speaking driver… sometimes even complimentary water bottles on board).

And if you have enough time and budget, you can spend those few hours between docking and flight departure exploring Barcelona, booking a city tour ending at the airport or starting there, depending on your needs.

The Barcelona cruise port is conveniently located near landmarks and attractions. The historic Barri Gotic or Old City is a 10-minute shuttle ride from all the terminals.

Popular spots like La Rambla, a known pedestrian street, and the Columbus Monument are easily accessible by walking or taking a taxi. You can also explore the Gothic Quarter visit the Cathedral of Barcelona or enjoy a leisurely stroll along Barceloneta Beach. These attractions showcase the city’s history, architecture, and culture. Make sure to plan your time as it typically takes around 10 to 15 minutes to travel between the cruise port and downtown via shuttle or taxi.

From the ship to the center of Barcelona

In all terminals, there are plenty of options to reach the center of the city. Taxis are plentiful and shuttle busses operate through the ships on a regular basis (sometimes complimentary, sometimes with a small fee). Just about every part of Barcelona worth visiting on a day trip is accessible within 20 mintes.

Can you walk across the port bridge to the city?

In short, it *IS* possible but it’s a hike. It is much longer than it appears on a map. Expect that you could spend an hour getting from your ship to the start of La Rambla / Columbus Monument. It’s not possible for people with mobility issues to walk this area.

Restaurants Near the Barcelona Cruise Port (Plus Shopping and Other Services)

When you’ve just arrived at the port you might want to grab some last minute supplies before setting sail. While most of the vicinity, around the port is industrial there are plenty of shopping options just a short shuttle ride away.

Exploring Dining Choices; From Small Bites to Upscale Dining

Barcelona offers an array of dining establishments ranging from Spanish tapas to upscale fine dining options. Wander along Ample Street (Carrer Ample) a two-block area filled with a mix of restaurants and quaint shops. Another must-visit spot is the Mercado de La Boqueria, a public market brimming with fresh produce, artisanal meats, and more. For a culinary adventure, venture into the lesser-known alleys and streets, near the port. In many areas of Barcelona, commercialism has unfortunately taken over leading to eateries that cater more towards tourists rather than reflecting the true essence of the city and its culture. But amazing local eateries can be found in the above-mentioned areas.

Shopping and Other Services: Convenience Stores, Pharmacies, and More

To stock up on crucials or grab some souvenirs, you’ll find convenience stores, pharmacies, and other services within walking distance of the port. Take a shuttle to the bottom of La Rambla and explore the vendors lining the waterfront, offering standard souvenirs, handmade leather goods, interesting crafts, antiques, and more.

Luggage Storage near the Barcelona Cruise Port

Keep in mind that there is no luggage storage available directly at the Barcelona cruise port.

There are numerous locations that work through companies like Stasher or Bounce. These companies contract with local businesses to securely store your luggage. So if you arrive early or plan on taking a late flight after your cruise, using one of these services will only cost about 5 euros per bag for the whole day. Remember that the port area is quite extensive so it’s important to know which terminal your ship is docked at and plan your path accordingly. Be cautious while walking as there can be a lot of traffic and pedestrians, in the area.

If you reach the Columbus Monument and the beginning of La Rambla on foot, you’ll likely want to take a taxi over the bridge (Unless you’re fortunate enough to have your ship dock right in the center of the port entry).

More Tips About the Barcelona Cruise Port

  • Cruise Ship Shuttle Bus Services: Many cruise companies offer free shuttles that will pick you up and drop you off at the same place, so check to see whether transportation is included.
  • Walking Distance: If your ship docks at the World Trade Center, you won’t need the shuttle since points of interest are within walking distance.
  • The Area Near the Barcelona Cruise Port: Unless you dock at the World Trade Center, don’t bother walking from your ship to the city. The path from the closest berth will take at least 45 minutes over a steep, highway-like bridge that does have a sidewalk but also has cars speeding by.
  • Luggage Storage: There is no luggage storage available at the Barcelona cruise port. However, the port does have a partnership with Bags&Go, a private company that transfers luggage to a hotel, the airport, or train station. There are also private storage options available near the port.
  • Arrive Early: Plan to arrive at the terminal at least two hours before departure to allow for security checks and boarding.

Expect outdoor lines

On several recent embarkations from Barcelona, we experienced unusually long lines OUTSIDE of the covered terminal areas! In the summer heat, people became very uncomfortable and downright angry. So expect this COULD happen and bring a bottle of water and have snacks easily available in case you end up standing outside for a while.

Transportation from the cruise port

As a major port city, Barcelona offers several transportation options to and from the cruise port. Here are the best transportation options:

If I haven’t booked a shore excursion, I love having a private driver pick me up right at the cruise port for a hassle-free transfer and to make the most of my limited time.

Not only will the driver help you with your luggage so you can jump right into the airconditioned car, but he will also know exactly where to take you and give you some advice for visiting the city.

Luxury for a very affordable price.

Is it easy to get a taxi from Barcelona cruise port?

All the terminals at Barcelona cruise port have taxi stands, but there are often long lines to catch one. And remember that there will be a surcharge for pier pick-up or drop-off. The last time I was there it came out to about about 10€.

The most affordable way to get to the Barcelona Cruise Port is by using public transportation. The city’s metro system is an affordable and efficient way to get around. You can take the metro from the Drassanes station on the green line, which is located near the port.

To get to the metro station you can take the Cruise Bus service (known as the T3 Port Bus and Blue Bus) offered by the port authority. The buses don’t follow a set timetable, departures are coordinated with the arrival and departure of the cruise ships.

The shuttle bus runs in circles from the port to the Colombus Statue in front of the World Trade Centre and costs €3 per person and €4.5 for a return ticket. From there, you have to walk about 7 minutes to reach the metro station and the beginning of La Rambla.

To continue on by bus you can catch the D20 to the beaches around Barceloneta, or the V13 that will take you to Plaça Universidad, from where you can walk to Plaça Catalunya in about 5 minutes.

The tickets for the Cruise Bus can be purchased with cash (coins or small notes) on the bus itself or online .

Barcelona public transport still operates on paper tickets valid for metro, bus, tram and train, which you can buy from vending machines at most stops.

If there are two or more of you travelling together, you can save money by purchasing a T-familiar travel card for €10 allowing 8 journeys over 30 days to be made by metro or bus in Barcelona.

Uber is not currently available in Barcelona, but the city has several other ride-hailing services, such as Cabify and Free Now. These services are similar to Uber and offer a convenient way to get around using the city’s regulated taxis.

Barcelona Airport To Cruise Port

For those of you who are starting your cruise in Barcelona, you’ll have a few options to get from El Prat Airport to Barcelona cruise port or vice versa. The total distance is 17 km and should take around 25 minutes by car.

You can book a shuttle from Barcelona airport to the cruise port with Moventis Experience. There are no set times or vehicles, it all depends on when you arrive and how many passengers have booked the shuttle.

Landing Terminal 1:

If you’re landing at   Terminal 1, after collecting your luggage you should make your way to the Tourism Office   located on the right side of the arrival point. Someone from the Moventis crew will wait for you to finish the check-in process. Loom for someone in a bright orange uniform.

Landing Terminal 2:

If you land at Terminal 2, go to the Tourism Office   and you will find a From2 agent waiting for you, who will provide you with the necessary information to reach your destination.

The fastest way to get to the Barcelona cruise port by public transport is the super-convenient Aerobus , which departs every 5 minutes from both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. A one-way ticket costs only €6.75 and you’ll have WiFi onboard if you need to do some last-minute research.

The bus takes you to Plaça Catalunya where you can take the metro two stops to Drassanes or you can hail a taxi and get to the port for about €10.

If you prefer not to wait for a shuttle or bus you have the option of going by taxi or private driver.

How much is a taxi from Barcelona airport to cruise port?

The fixed price to get from the airport to Barcelona cruise port is €39. There is no need to book in advance since there are always plenty of licensed cabs waiting at the taxi ranks at both airport terminals.

Nearby attractions

As one of the busiest cities in Europe, it’s important to book all your Barcelona tickets in advance. Some attractions have even stopped selling tickets on the ground, and require to be pre-booked.

If you visit during the warmer months and are limited on time, get skip-the-line tickets or you will spend most of your time waiting in line.

Barcelona City Center is easy to visit from Barcelona Cruise Port . As mentioned above, it is located just a few miles away from the port and offers a wide range of things to do. So whether you have 24 hours in Barcelona or just a few, these are the attractions you must see:

La Rambla

La Rambla is a lively pedestrian street that stretches for 1.2 kilometers, from Plaça de Catalunya to the Christopher Columbus Monument at Port Vell. It is lined with trees, flower stalls, street performers, and outdoor cafes, making it a vibrant and exciting place to explore.

Along La Rambla, you will find many interesting sights and attractions. One of the most popular is the Boqueria Market, a colorful and bustling market that sells fresh produce, seafood, meats, and other local delicacies. It is a great place to sample some of the city’s famous cuisine and immerse yourself in the local culture.

🥘 If you’re a lover of Spanish food (who isn’t, right), I highly recommend this paella class overlooking Las Rambla & Boqueria Market. You will shop for fresh produce at the market and also learn how to make Spanish tortillas, gazpacho and tomato bread.

Sagrada Familia

The Sagrada Familia is a stunning basilica located in the Eixample district of Barcelona. It was designed by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi and is known for its unique and intricate design.

Despite being under construction for over 100 years, the Sagrada Familia remains one of the most popular tourist attractions in Barcelona, drawing millions of visitors each year. It’s a must on any Spain bucket list .

As the most famous landmark in Barcelona, Sagrada Familia draws quite a crowd. So I highly recommend you book your tickets in advance.

You can visit the Sagrada Familia with an expert guide, skip-the-ticket-line access and choose between a small-group or private experience.

Gothic Quarter

The Gothic Quarter is one of the most historic and charming neighborhoods in Barcelona. It is located in the heart of the city’s old town and is known for its many charming streets and alleys, such as the Carrer del Bisbe, a narrow street that is famous for its beautiful archway, and the Plaça Sant Jaume, a historic square that is home to the City Hall and the Palace of the Generalitat.

One of the most famous landmarks is the Barcelona Cathedral, a stunning Gothic cathedral that dates back to the 13th century. The cathedral is known for its beautiful stained glass windows, intricate carvings, and impressive bell tower.

Another popular attraction in the Gothic Quarter is the Plaça del Rei, a beautiful square that was once the site of the royal palace of the Catalan kings. Going for a stroll through the Gothic Quarter is one of the best things to do in Barcelona at night .

Parc Guell is a beautiful park located in the Gracia district of Barcelona and is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. The park was designed by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi and is known for its stunning architecture, colorful mosaics, and beautiful views of the city.

One of the most famous landmarks in Parc Guell is the Dragon Stairway, a colorful staircase that leads up to the park’s main terrace. The staircase is decorated with a mosaic of colorful tiles and is guarded by a large dragon statue, which has become one of the most iconic symbols of the park.

🌟 Remember that all the Barcelona highlights I mentioned above are included in this Private Barcelona Highlights Shore Excursion .

Sagrat Cor Church

If you have the time I highly recommend you also see Sagrat Cor Church, a stunning basilica located on the top of Mount Tibidabo in Barcelona. It was designed by the Spanish architect Enric Sagnier and was completed in 1961.

The church is known for its beautiful Neo-Gothic style architecture and its impressive location, which offers stunning views of the city and the surrounding mountains.

One of the biggest draws of Barcelona is its stunning beaches. The city has several beaches that are easily accessible from the cruise port, including:

  • Barceloneta Beach:  The most popular beach in the city, Barceloneta is known for its lively atmosphere and wide range of activities.
  • Nova Icaria Beach:  A quieter beach that is popular with families and offers a variety of water sports.
  • Bogatell Beach:  A long, wide beach that is popular with locals and offers plenty of space to relax and soak up the sun.

Barcelona is home to a wealth of museums and art galleries, many of which are located in or near the city center. Some of the top museums and galleries to visit include:

  • Picasso Museum:  A museum dedicated to the life and work of Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
  • Museum of Contemporary Art:  A museum that showcases contemporary art from around the world.
  • National Art Museum of Catalonia:  A museum that houses a collection of Romanesque art and Catalan modernism.

So as you can see, there is no shortage of things to see and do near the Barcelona cruise port. Whether you’re interested in history, art, or simply soaking up the sun on the beach, there is something for everyone in this vibrant city.

The only hotel at the Barcelona cruise port is the  Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel GL in the World Trade Center, a very good 5-star hotel.

The hotel offers 291 spacious and stylish rooms and suites, all of which are equipped with modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. Many of the rooms also offer stunning views of the port and the city skyline.

One of the highlights of the Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel GL is its rooftop terrace, which offers breathtaking views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea. The terrace is the perfect place to relax and unwind after a busy day of sightseeing and features a swimming pool, a bar, and plenty of comfortable loungers and seating areas.

The hotel also offers a range of other amenities and services, including a fitness center, a sauna, a restaurant, and a bar. The hotel’s restaurant, the Aire de Mar, serves delicious Mediterranean cuisine in a stylish and elegant setting.

I’m gonna break down the best Barcelona airport to port (and vice versa) options for a smooth and hassle-free transfer experience.

Private Transfer from El Prat to Cruise Terminal

Why take a private transfer from Barcelona Airport to the Barcelona cruise port ?

Because it’s a seamless port-to-port experience without lifting a finger .

You know the movies with the guy holding the sign with your last name? That’s just what you’ll get.

Here’s some quick benefits of booking a private transfer:

  • Personalized Service : The driver waits for you in the terminal holding a sign bearing your name.
  • No Lifting : Big suitcases after a long flight? No worries. The driver will take them off your hands.
  • Efficiency : In cruise/high season a private transfer eliminates 20-30 minutes of waiting for a taxi.
  • Punctuality : Guarantee your arrival without being at the whim of ticket lines or even strikes.

This is especially good for groups of up to 7 people – it works out to as little as €13.57 per person .

Best of all, you can have it all booked in advance from the comfort of home – and be picked up right outside your cruise ship, right outside airport arrivals, or at any hotel in the city:

Public Transport: A Cost-Effective Alternative

Why take public transport from the airport to cruise port? To save money – that’s it!

Barcelona public transport connects the airport to the cruise terminals, with several combinations to get you there:

  • Train and Metro : The R2 Nord train from the airport takes you to the Barcelona Passeig de Gràcia train station. From there, the L3 metro line (green) will bring you three stops closer to the Drassanes station.
  • Aerobus and Metro : The Aerobus service from the airport goes to the city center. From the Plaça d’Espanya stop, you can take the L3 metro to Drassanes.

Drassanes metro is the closest metro to the cruise port – it’s right by the famous Columbus Monument .

The journey to the World Trade Centre (WTC) terminals from here typically spans 10 to 15 minutes on foot.

However, for Terminals A, B, C, and D it’s advisable to opt for the Cruise Bus or a taxi due to distance.

The Cruise Bus, also known as the T3 or Portbus, is a shuttle service linking all the cruise ship terminals to the city – to the bottom of the famous Las Ramblas in Barcelona.

You grab the T-3 Portbus just a couple minutes’ walk from Drassanes station – right under the Columbus Statue (pictured).

On time & friendly, didn’t get lost

Our experience with Shuttle Direct was amazing. When flying into Barcelona our fight was delayed 4 hours and we thought that the driver would not be there to pick us up. We had no way of letting the company know of the delay since the numbers provides online do not work. To our amazement our driver had been waiting for us when we came out of customs. William was just an amazing individual he set us at ease and told us the main thing was that we arrived safely. Our second experience when transferring from the apartment to the pier was just as positive. Jose was very puntual and friendly. Our return to the airport was just as positive. We will use Shuttle Direct again. My only feedback is that there should be a way to contact them maybe via email or something if there is an issue.

Pricing was very reasonable and it was easy to complete the transaction.

Introduction

When your cruise comes to an end in Barcelona, you may find yourself wondering how to get from the cruise port to the airport. Luckily, there are several transportation options available to suit your needs and preferences. Whether you’re looking for convenience, affordability, or a combination of both, Barcelona offers a range of transportation services to ensure a smooth transition from the cruise port to your flight.

In this article, we will explore the various transportation options and provide you with the necessary information to make an informed decision. From public transportation to private shuttle services, taxis, and even rental cars, we will cover each option in detail, highlighting their benefits and considerations.

Barcelona is a vibrant city with a well-developed transportation system. From the moment you step off your cruise ship, you’ll have options at your disposal to reach the airport efficiently and comfortably. Whether you’re a solo traveler, a couple, or a family with kids, you’ll find a transportation method that suits your needs.

It’s important to plan ahead and allocate sufficient time for your transfer to the airport. Consider factors such as traffic conditions, distance, and any potential delays that may occur. Additionally, check your flight departure time and aim to arrive at the airport at least two hours before your scheduled departure.

Now, let’s take a closer look at the various transportation options available to you when traveling from Barcelona cruise port to the airport.

Option 1: Public Transportation

One of the most cost-effective ways to get from Barcelona cruise port to the airport is by utilizing the city’s public transportation system. Barcelona has an extensive network of buses and trains that provide easy access to various parts of the city, including the airport.

The Aerobus is a popular choice among travelers as it offers a direct connection between the cruise port and the airport terminals. The Aerobus service operates every 5 to 10 minutes, ensuring quick and frequent transfers. You can purchase tickets directly from the bus driver or through automated ticket machines at the bus stops.

Another option is to take the local bus or train. Buses provide a more economical option, while trains offer a faster journey. Both options require some walking and transfers, so be sure to check the route and timetables in advance.

Barcelona’s public transportation system is generally efficient and reliable. However, it’s important to consider the time of day and potential crowds, especially during peak travel periods. Allow for extra time if you choose this option, as public transportation may take longer than other modes of transport.

Additionally, if you have heavy luggage or prefer a more comfortable journey, public transportation may not be the most suitable choice. Keep in mind that you will need to handle your bags and navigate through stations and transfers.

Overall, public transportation is a convenient and budget-friendly option for getting from Barcelona cruise port to the airport. It offers flexibility and allows you to experience the city’s transportation system firsthand. However, remember to allocate sufficient time and be prepared for any potential delays or crowding.

Option 2: Private Shuttle Service

If you prefer a more convenient and hassle-free option, hiring a private shuttle service is a great choice for getting from Barcelona cruise port to the airport. Private shuttle services offer a door-to-door transfer, meaning they will pick you up directly from the cruise port and drop you off at the airport.

One of the main advantages of using a private shuttle service is the comfort and convenience it provides. You don’t have to worry about navigating public transportation, hauling your luggage, or dealing with transfers. The private shuttle will take care of everything, allowing you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.

Another benefit of private shuttle services is the flexibility they offer. You can typically choose the pick-up time that suits your schedule, ensuring you arrive at the airport with ample time before your flight. Additionally, some private shuttle services offer personalized services, such as providing child seats or accommodating large groups.

It is advisable to book your private shuttle service in advance to secure your spot and guarantee availability. Many companies provide online booking options, making the process quick and convenient. Be sure to provide your cruise ship and flight details during the booking process to ensure a smooth transfer.

While private shuttle services may be slightly more expensive than other transportation options, the comfort and convenience they offer can outweigh the cost. It is important to compare prices and check reviews to find a reputable and reliable service provider.

Overall, if you value convenience, comfort, and a stress-free transfer experience, a private shuttle service is an excellent choice for getting from Barcelona cruise port to the airport. It provides a seamless journey, allowing you to focus on enjoying the last moments of your trip without worrying about transportation logistics.

Option 3: Taxi

For a quick and direct transfer from Barcelona cruise port to the airport, taking a taxi is a viable option. Taxis are readily available at the cruise port and offer a convenient and efficient way to reach your destination.

Barcelona taxis are typically modern, comfortable, and equipped with meters to ensure fair pricing. You can easily identify licensed taxis by their yellow and black colors, as well as the green light on the roof indicating availability.

One advantage of taking a taxi is the simplicity of the process. You can simply approach the taxi rank at the cruise port, inform the driver of your destination (the airport), and they will take you directly there. The drivers are familiar with the city’s roads and traffic conditions, ensuring a smooth and efficient journey.

It’s important to note that taxi fares in Barcelona are metered, so you won’t have to negotiate the price with the driver. However, make sure the meter is running from the moment you start the journey. If you have any concerns about the fare or the route, don’t hesitate to communicate with the driver or ask for a receipt at the end of the trip.

While taxis provide convenience and a direct transfer, they may be more expensive compared to other transportation options. The fare will depend on factors such as the distance, time of day (especially during peak hours), and any additional charges for luggage or tolls. It’s recommended to check the approximate fare before getting into the taxi to have an idea of what to expect.

Overall, taking a taxi from Barcelona cruise port to the airport offers a convenient and straightforward option. It’s ideal for travelers who prioritize speed, comfort, and a door-to-door service. However, keep in mind that during busy periods, such as cruise ship disembarkation or holidays, there may be a higher demand for taxis, so it’s advisable to plan accordingly.

Option 4: Rental Car

If you prefer the freedom and flexibility of having your own transportation, renting a car is a viable option for getting from Barcelona cruise port to the airport. Rental car companies operate in and around the city, providing a convenient way to explore Barcelona and its surrounding areas.

Having a rental car allows you to set your own schedule and travel at your own pace. You can easily pick up the rental car from the cruise port and drop it off at the airport before your departure. This eliminates the need for relying on public transportation schedules or waiting for taxis.

Before renting a car, it’s important to consider a few factors. Firstly, ensure that you have the necessary documentation, including a valid driver’s license, a credit card for the rental deposit, and any required identification or international driving permit if applicable.

Additionally, consider the cost of renting a car, which can vary depending on factors such as the duration of the rental, the type of car, and any additional services or insurance you opt for. It’s advisable to compare prices from different rental car companies to find the best deal.

One thing to keep in mind when driving in Barcelona is the traffic and parking situation. Barcelona can be quite congested, especially during peak hours, and finding parking can be challenging. It’s recommended to familiarize yourself with the parking regulations and consider parking options near the airport that offer shuttle services.

While renting a car provides convenience and flexibility, it may not be the most cost-effective option for everyone. You need to factor in the rental cost, fuel expenses, toll fees (if applicable), and potential parking fees. If you’re traveling alone or with a small group, other transportation options might be more economical.

In summary, renting a car offers the freedom and flexibility to explore Barcelona at your own pace. It’s a suitable option for those who prefer to have control over their transportation and want the convenience of a door-to-door transfer from the cruise port to the airport. Nevertheless, consider the costs and traffic conditions before deciding if renting a car is the right choice for you.

Option 5: Uber or Lyft

Another convenient option for getting from Barcelona cruise port to the airport is using ride-sharing platforms like Uber or Lyft. These popular transportation services offer a reliable and hassle-free way to travel from one location to another.

Using Uber or Lyft provides several benefits. Firstly, the process is straightforward and user-friendly. Simply download the app, create an account, and request a ride to your destination. The app will provide you with an estimated arrival time and fare upfront, allowing you to plan your journey with ease.

Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are known for their convenience and reliability. Drivers are professional and knowledgeable about the city, ensuring a smooth and efficient journey. You can also track your driver’s location in real-time, making it easier to coordinate pick-ups at the cruise port.

One advantage of using Uber or Lyft is the cost transparency. The fare is determined based on factors such as distance, time, and demand, and you have the ability to review and compare prices before confirming your ride. This can be particularly useful if you’re on a budget or want to avoid any potential surprises with the fare.

It’s worth noting that availability and pricing may vary depending on the time of day and level of demand. During peak travel periods or when cruise ships disembark, there may be higher demand for rides, potentially leading to increased prices or longer wait times. It’s advisable to plan accordingly and be prepared for any possible fluctuations in availability or cost.

Uber and Lyft also offer various options for different group sizes and preferences. For example, you can choose a standard car for solo travelers or smaller groups, or opt for a larger vehicle if you have more luggage or are traveling with a larger group.

Overall, Uber and Lyft provide a convenient and reliable option for getting from Barcelona cruise port to the airport. They offer flexibility, cost transparency, and the convenience of a door-to-door service. Just make sure to have the app downloaded and check for availability and prices before your transfer.

When it comes to getting from Barcelona cruise port to the airport, there are several transportation options to choose from, each with its own advantages and considerations. Whether you prefer convenience, affordability, or a combination of both, finding the right mode of transport is essential for a smooth and stress-free journey.

If you’re looking for a cost-effective option, public transportation such as the Aerobus, local buses, or trains can be a great choice. These options offer flexibility and allow you to experience Barcelona’s transportation system firsthand. However, be prepared for potential delays and the need to handle your luggage throughout the journey.

For a more convenient and hassle-free experience, you can consider hiring a private shuttle service. These services offer direct transfers from the cruise port to the airport, ensuring comfort and peace of mind. Booking in advance and comparing prices will help you find a reputable and reliable service provider.

Taxis are another convenient option that provide a quick and direct transfer experience. They are readily available at the cruise port and offer a door-to-door service. Just keep in mind that fares may vary depending on factors such as distance, time of day, and any additional charges.

If you value freedom and flexibility, renting a car allows you to set your own schedule and explore Barcelona at your own pace. However, consider the costs, traffic conditions, and parking availability before opting for this option.

Lastly, ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft offer a convenient and reliable way to travel from the cruise port to the airport. They provide cost transparency, flexibility, and the ability to track your driver’s location in real-time.

In conclusion, the choice of transportation to get from Barcelona cruise port to the airport ultimately depends on your preferences, budget, and travel needs. Consider factors such as convenience, cost, comfort, and flexibility when making your decision. Regardless of the option you choose, proper planning and allowing sufficient time for the transfer will help ensure a smooth and stress-free end to your cruise vacation in Barcelona.

‘Tourists Go Home’: Barcelona’s Protests Against Overtourism

July 8th, 2024 at 6:34 PM EDT

Barcelona, one of the world's most popular destinations, just got a rude awakening about how it manages tourism.

Dawit Habtemariam

Thousands of protestors marched in Barcelona over the weekend against overtourism.

Nearly 3,000 people took to the street on Saturday. More than 140 organizations, including neighborhood associations, ecologists and housing activists marched under the slogans, “Enough, let’s put limits on tourism” and “Tourists go home,” reported Catalan News .

Some protestors sprayed tourists sitting at restaurants with water guns.

Locals are protesting over the lack of affordable housing, which they blame on short-term rentals, and overcrowding caused by the cruise industry. In late June, the city announced it will ban all short-term rentals by 2029.

Barcelona’s Turbulent History with Tourism

Barcelona has had protests against tourism in the past.

“These are the same problems we had pre-Covid. They’re just coming back a little bit bigger than they were before because there’s more people traveling,” said Yves Marceau, vice president of product for G Adventures. He said a lot of tourism has spread beyond the city center.

@eliyasmusique habe mich als solidarischer guiri rein gewagt #politics #barcelona #catalunya #tourism #eattherich #anticapitalism #climatechange ♬ In Essence (Slowed) – Ka$tro

In 2022, the director general of Turisme de Barcelona was fired by the organization’s City and Tourism Council , which represents locals.

Barcelona is one of the most popular destinations in Europe right now. “It’s crowded. It’s a challenge to get anything, to get transportation, hotel, anything,” said Marceau.

G Adventures has reduced the number of days its tours spend in Barcelona to limit its contribution to overtourism. “We’ve been trying to limit the number of days we are in Barcelona as a group,” said Marceau.

Around 26 million tourists came to Barcelona in 2023, generating €12.75 billion ($13.8 billion) in spending, according to Turisme de Barcelona.

Protest Spread in Spain’s Popular Destinations

Barcelona is the latest destination in Spain to see a rise in protests against overtourism. Protests have erupted in the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Mallorca , Menorca and Malaga.

A major point of frustration for locals have been the growth in short-term rentals. In Malaga, the supply of short-term rentals rose 24% while demand rose 31%, according to AirDNA.

Destinations Clamp Down on Mass Tourism

This year, local politicians have enacted an array of policies like new taxes and cruise bans to discourage mass tourism.

  • Venice put in place an entry fee on day trippers.
  • Amsterdam plans to ban cruise stop s at its main terminal by 2023 and has blocked new hotel development .
  • At Japan’s popular Mt. Fuji, local authorities recently implemented a daily visitor cap and charged a hikers a toll for entering the popular Yoshida Trail .
  • Indonesia’s Bali now charges a “tourist levy” when they visit the island. In Iceland, the national government has reinstated its tourist tax .

Politicians have put these policies in place to preserve the quality of life of residents. Amsterdam Deputy Mayor Sofyan Mbarki told Skift an objective of his government has been to make Amsterdam “liveable” again for locals.

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
