Can You Smoke on a Cruise Ship? The Ultimate Guide

For smokers and non-smokers alike, knowing where smoking is (and isn’t!) allowed on your cruise is so important. In this guide to cruise line smoking policies, I’ll explain the guidelines for where it’s OK to smoke on a cruise and where it’s strictly forbidden.

cruise car smoke

Whether you’d prefer to steer clear of any secondhand smoke on your cruise vacation, or you’re a smoker looking for the right place to light up on your upcoming cruise, I’ll share all the basics you need to know.

Plus, I’ve included a line-by-line list of smoking policies for 39 cruise lines, as well as a handy chart to see the basic policies at a glance.

Can you smoke on a cruise ship?

In general, you can still smoke on a cruise ship, but only in designated areas. If you’re not sure where the smoking areas are, you can ask any member of the crew and they’ll give you directions.

cruise car smoke

Cruise lines have significantly tightened up their smoking policies over the last twenty years, but there’s still at least one designated smoking area on just about every ship. In fact, of the 39 cruise lines I researched, only one has any completely non-smoking ships!

Sorry, you’ll have to keep reading to find out which cruise ships are entirely smoke-free!

What can you smoke on a cruise ship?

Cruise lines allow passengers to smoke tobacco in their designated smoking areas. However, no cruise lines allow cannabis or CBD in any form on their ships. This applies to smoking and vaping materials, as well as edibles and topical ointments. Even with a prescription, it’s still not allowed.

Smoking cigars or pipes on a cruise

Most cruise lines allow cigar or pipe smoking, but often only in outdoor smoking areas or special cigar lounges.

cruise car smoke

If you like to relax with a cigar or a pipe, make sure you ask a crewmember which smoking sections you can use. It might not be all of them!

Vaping on a cruise

Using e-cigarettes (vaping) is usually only allowed in designated smoking areas. But there are a few exceptions!

A handful of cruise lines, including Cunard and Holland America, allow vaping in passenger staterooms. (Princess Cruises also used to allow vaping in staterooms, but that rule has recently changed.)

One cruise line, Regent Seven Seas, actually allows vaping in interior parts of the ship, except in the dining areas.

Smoking on stateroom balconies

With very few exceptions, smoking isn’t allowed on cruise ship balconies anymore. Although some cruisers try to sneak a smoke in the open air, it can be a safety hazard (and annoyed guests on nearby balconies will likely turn you in).

However, there are currently five cruise lines that still allow smoking on your balcony: Costa Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd, TUI, Fred. Olsen, and AIDA.

cruise car smoke

There are some ships on these lines that have non-smoking balcony sections—or even entire ships where smoking on balconies is prohibited—so be sure you book your stateroom on the right ship and in the correct section.

Smoking at cruise ship bars

Most bars on cruise ships—indoors and on deck—are non-smoking. There are some exceptions, like cigar bars and designated lounges, but not every ship has this feature.

But, many designated smoking areas are located close enough to bars that crewmembers will come around to take drink orders and deliver them right to you.

Smoking in cruise ship casinos

Many cruise lines with onboard casinos allow smoking in at least a section of their casinos. Smoking privileges are usually reserved for active players, and often at slot machines or select table games only.

cruise car smoke

Some cruise lines have specific times where the casino is entirely non-smoking. If all the ashtrays have suddenly disappeared from what was previously a smoking section, just ask a crew member. Odds are it’s the casino’s non-smoking time.

Today there are many cruise lines that have completely non-smoking casinos. Celebrity Cruises, Azamara, and Regent Seven Seas, among others, don’t allow smoking at any time in the casino.

Smoking during bunkering

If you’re unfamiliar with the term “bunkering”, it’s the ship’s refueling process. During certain port stops, your cruise ship will be topped up with fuel and smoking won’t be permitted on any of the exterior open deck areas.

The process usually lasts a few hours, and on some ships this means there are zero places where smoking is allowed during bunkering.

What happens if you’re caught smoking in a non-smoking area on a cruise ship?

Cruise lines are very strict with their smoking policies, and can assess hefty fines for people who are caught smoking in non-smoking areas. They can even kick you off the ship at the next port!

cruise car smoke

And no, you won’t get a refund if you’re disembarked for breaking a cruise line policy. You’ll also need to find your way home at your own expense—not a fun way to end your vacation!

Buying cigarettes or cigars on a cruise ship

Most larger cruise ships sell cigarettes and cigars on board. You can usually ask for cigarettes at any of the ship’s bars. If the ship has an indoor smoking lounge or cigar bar, you can often buy cigars there.

The onboard duty-free shops also usually carry cigarettes by the carton and cigars by the box. However, some cruise lines will hold your duty-free items until the last night of the cruise.

You must be at least 21 years old to purchase, possess, or use tobacco on cruises that begin in U.S. ports. For sailings embarking from most other ports, the minimum age is 18 years old.

Tip: Although you can usually buy cigars or cigarettes, lighters and matches can be hard to come by on board. Be sure to bring extras before you sail.

Best cruise lines for non-smokers

If you’re a non-smoker and you really don’t want to be around cigarette smoke, many cruise lines do a fairly good job keeping the designated smoking areas hidden away.

But smoking areas (especially on large cruise lines with a variety of ship classes) can vary widely from one ship to another. You might find that the smoking area on one ship is so far from the action that you’d never know it was there. But another ship on the very same line might allow smoking on half of the pool deck! (I’ve noticed this on both Carnival’s and Norwegian’s fleets as examples.)

Some cruise lines also allow smoking in their casinos, and that smoke tends to travel. If you’re a non-smoker who likes to play in the casino (or you just want to avoid wafting smoke), these cruise lines have entirely non-smoking casinos:

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line

Celebrity cruises, celestyal cruises, cunard line, marella cruises, oceania cruises.

  • Regent Seven Seas

Virgin Voyages

Overall, the best cruise lines for people who want to avoid smoke on their cruise vacation include:

Disney Cruise Line

Seadream yacht club.

  • Viking (Ocean and River)

Windstar Cruises

Remember I mentioned that one cruise line has a couple of non-smoking cruise ships? It’s luxury cruise line Seabourn. They operate two expedition ships, Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit , that are completely non-smoking.

Read more about what Seabourn has to offer in my article Which Cruise Lines Have All-Inclusive Cruises?

What ships have the most smoking areas

Hi Linda, the cruise lines that have the most smoking areas on their ships are Costa Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd, TUI, Fred. Olsen, and AIDA - simply because they permit smoking on stateroom balconies. If you're a smoker and you're not planning to cruise on one of these lines, consider looking at Carnival, Princess, NCL, Royal Caribbean, or Holland America. You'll generally find at least a couple of smoking areas on each of their ships, and most of their ships allow smoking in the casino (with the exception of Australia-based ships). Hope this helps!

Is smoking allowed on cruise ships? A line-by-line guide

Erica Silverstein

Cruise ship smoking policies vary by cruise line, but typically smoking is not allowed except in a few designated onboard areas.

Can you smoke in cruise ship restaurants? No. What about cruise ship cabins? Never, unless you are vaping — and only a handful of ships permit that. Are you allowed to smoke on cruise ship balconies? Definitely not; it's a fire hazard. (The exception is Costa Cruises, which does allow smoking on outdoor balconies.) Can you light up on deck? Typically yes, but only in designated areas.

If kicking back with a cigar and a glass of Scotch is your idea of vacation, look for ships with dedicated cigar lounges. Just don't plan to get high on the high seas: You are not allowed to smoke marijuana on a cruise ship , even if you have a medical marijuana card or are departing from a state where recreational use is legal.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

What happens if you get caught smoking on a cruise? Most ships charge a $250 cleaning fee and reserve the right to take further action (including disembarkation). On Carnival Cruise Line, each violation is subject to a $500 fine, and you could also get banned from ever sailing Carnival again.

Read our line-by-line guide to cruise line smoking policies to learn where you can — and cannot — smoke on cruise ships.

Smoking is only permitted on the port side forward area of the pool deck on Azamara cruise ships. All other indoor and outdoor venues are nonsmoking. Smoking rules also apply to electronic cigarettes.

Carnival Cruise Line

cruise car smoke

Acceptable smoking locations vary by Carnival Cruise Line ship but include specific outside deck areas, as well as certain sections of the casinos when the person is playing. Smoking is not permitted in cabins and suites, including on room balconies. Smoking rules also apply to e-cigarettes.

The locations of the smoking areas vary for each cruise line.  All tend to have outdoor smoking areas, but only a few cater to indoor smokers via a lounge or sometimes in the casinos.

If you use a type of e-cigarette, we have covered them in more detail, as to whether you can bring vape pens on a cruise and where you can use them.

Can I Smoke Cigarettes in my Cabin?

No cruise lines allow guests to smoke cigarettes or cigars in the cabins.  If they do, they risk the smoke setting off the fire alarms and any consequences of being caught. Some cruise lines allow vaping

Is Balcony Smoking Allowed?

In the past, most cruise lines used to allow smoking on the balcony. Over the years, almost all prominent cruise lines have banned smoking from balconies.

The reason for the ban was predominantly because of passenger complaints and feedback.  Apart from the health issues, some people don’t like being so close to a potential safety hazard.

However, if you value being able to relax and smoke from your own balcony, four cruise lines allow smoking on the balconies .

Cruise Ships That Have Cigar and Pipe Lounges

Although cigars can typically be smoked in most designated areas, some cruise ships cater to a good old-fashioned cigar-smoking experience by offering Cigar Lounges & Cigar Bars.

Cruise Lines that offer cigar lounges include:

  • Crystal Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Regent Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Silversea Cruises

Double check each individual ship via the deck plan because not every ship in the fleet may have one.

Cigar or sometimes Cigar and Cognac lounges tend to be more of a premium offering and are found on the smaller and more luxuriously marketed cruises lines.

What Happens If You Get Caught Smoking On Cruise?

If you are caught smoking outside the designated areas, you will be reminded to go to the nearest smoking areas.

If caught smoking from a balcony, you will likely receive a warning for breaking the rules.  If you continue to break the rule, you could be fined and possibly kicked off the ship.

You risk setting off the fire alarms if you are caught smoking in your stateroom.  Smoking in a cabin causes smoke-related damage to the furniture and furnishings, especially over time, as well as an unpleasant smell for future guests.

Therefore, you would likely be fined up to $500 to cover any cleaning expenses to cover the costs of replacing air filters, cleaning of carpet and drapes as well as bed blankets and pillows.

How To Get Away With Smoking On A Cruise Ship

This is a question more commonly asked when thinking about bringing weed on a cruise , where we covered in more detail the ways to sneakily have a smoke.  This also applies to anyone who wants to use the less intoxicating Delta 8 on a Cruise .

Weed on a cruise

When it comes to getting away with smoking cigarettes or cigars on cruise ships, smoking is allowed on all cruise ships so it is best to smoke them in designated areas.  Why break the rules when you don’t need too?

If you break the rules, you are potentially creating a hazard and upsetting other guests with their own health and safety concerns.

Whatever you don’t, try getting away with smoking in your cabin, as you risk setting off fire alarms and getting fined.

However, people still try using various methods which are covered in “ how to get away with smoking on a cruise ship “.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you bring a lighter on a cruise.

Standard cigarette lighters can be brought on a cruise ship.  However, more powerful torch lighters are prohibited.  Also, any novelty lighter that looks like a weapon or any other banned items will not be allowed on board.

Why Can’t You Smoke in a Cruise Cabin?

Smoking real cigarettes and cigars is a potential fire hazard that cruise lines massively want to avoid because worst case scenrio it could sink a cruise ship ,.  On top of that, they increase the cleaning required, and even flavored vapes can leave an unwanted smell in the cabin and furnishings that can be difficult to get rid of quickly for the next guests.

Can You Bring Cigarettes On A Cruise

You can take as many cigarettes on a cruise as you like, although they can be purchased on board and in ports of call.  Sometimes, you can get them duty-free, so they are cheaper to buy once on the ship.

Can You Bring Cigars On A Cruise

Cigars are allowed on cruises, but you can only smoke them in the designated smoking areas.  Depending on which cruise ship you are on, some have specific areas where cigars are prohibited, but others have areas where only cigars are allowed, as is the case with NCL.

Can You Bring Nicotine On A Cruise?

Nicotine in all forms is allowed on a cruise.  All cruise ships have smoking areas, even if they are only outdoors.

Nicotine tobacco products are allowed to be taken onboard as are vapes and any other form of nicotine, including gum and patches for those trying to stop or reduce their smoking.

Can You Buy Cigarettes on a Cruise?

Cruise ships have duty-free shops onboard which sell cartons of cigarettes.    Depending on the cruise line, you can often buy single packs of cigarettes from the bars at which you are allowed to smoke at.

These will most likely be in the casino bar if smoking is allowed.  Expect bars close to any designated smoking areas to sell them.

You’ll typically have to wait until the ship has disembarked before they are sold.

Are There Non-Smoking Cruise Ships?

There are no non-smoking cruise ships in existence.   At the very least, all the leading cruise lines offer smoking areas outdoors. Only Disney and Celebrity cruise lines don’t have any indoor smoking areas.

If you want to avoid smoke on your cruise, you can look up the locations of the smoking areas on the deck maps and plan to avoid them.

Other smaller cruise lines with no indoor smoking areas include:

  • P&0, Ponant
  • Viking Ocean

Smoking is allowed on all cruise ships. Some are more smoking-friendly than others offering both indoor and outdoor areas.

Do the smoking policies influence your choice of cruise in anyway?

Cruise Line Smoking Policies: A Smoker’s Guide to Cruising

by The Cruise Web Team October 3, 2019, 11:41 am

Many people are aware that cigars are enjoyed by many-a-passenger on cruise ships, but can you smoke cigarettes? What about vaping? And hey, its 2019, what’s the deal with cannabis and cruising? As for that last one, it’s a big no-go, and for good reason. While marijuana has been legalized in many states in the United States, it is still federally banned and all cruise lines listed err on the side of caution and make it very clear that any possession or use of illegal substances will result in immediate disembarkation and any travel expenses incurred as a result are solely the responsibility of the passenger. While enjoying your cruise, you’re often free to light up, given you follow ship and cruise line policies! And be aware that cruise lines take the following policies very seriously, as cigarette smoke can be a health and safety hazard, or simply retract from the experience of others.

Smoking Policies by Cruise Line

The three exceptions are Holland America Line, Costa Cruises, and Seabourn Cruises, which allow passengers to vape and smoke e-cigarettes in the cabin, but not on cabin balconies.

It’s important to note that electronic cigarettes are illegal in some countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Inda, and many South American and Southeast Asian countries. What Happens if I am Caught Smoking on a Cruise?

If you are caught smoking in a non-smoking area, the crew member may ask you to move to one of the designated smoking areas and charge a fine to your onboard account(usually between $200 to $500).

Repeat offenders may be held in the cruise ship’s jail until crew members can disembark them from the vessel at the next port of call.

CAN YOU SMOKE ON A CRUISE SHIP? WHICH CRUISE LINES ALLOW SMOKING?

The answer to this question is a resounding yes. Cruise ships allow their passengers to smoke in certain areas.

Book A Cruise

Is smoking allowed on cruise ships? The answer to this question is a resounding yes. Cruise ships allow their passengers to smoke in certain areas. These locations are typically designated as outdoor smoking zones. Passengers may also be allowed to smoke sometimes in casinos and smoking lounges. You must understand that these policies will likely vary between cruise lines. Most of the ship is generally a non-smoking zone, typically involving all the public places, including staterooms, restaurants, and theaters. The rules are strict, and every passenger is expected to comply with them. They have been made for safety and health reasons so that other passengers do not face problems during their voyage. If you are discovered breaking these rules, then you will be liable for a fine and can also be disembarked.

For all the non-smokers, you will have to choose the ship with some of the most restrictive smoking policies if you do not prefer people lighting up their cigarettes around you while you are trying to enjoy your vacation. These cruise lines include Azamara , Disney, and Viking Ocean. All three of these cruises permit smoking in limited areas on deck.

Are There Any Cruise Lines that Allow Smoking?

Some of the major cruise lines and their smoking policies include the following:

1. Silversea Cruises

People who are looking to light up a cigarette or a cigar aboard a Silversea cruise are allowed to do so in the Connoisseur’s Corner, at specific tables outside the Panorama Lounge, and at the pool bar. You can also smoke in a designated area on the open deck.

Silversea Cruises

2. Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking Ocean Cruises follows a more restrictive smoking policy. Passengers are allowed to smoke in just one outdoor area, which is the starboard side of Deck 8.

Viking Ocean Cruises

3. Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn ships allow their passengers to smoke on one side of the Sky Bar. You can also smoke on one side of the open terrace aft of The Club on Deck 5 and also on the starboard side of Seabourn Square on Deck 7. It is one of the few cruise lines that allow cigar and pipe smoking. You can also use e-cigarettes in all suites.

Seabourn Cruise Line

4. Royal Caribbean International

Nearly all of the Royal Caribbean ships allow their passengers in designated areas of the open decks. It is generally on the starboard side, which is also known as the port side on Oasis-class ships . Cigar and pipes are permitted in cigar bars and can be found on Freedom-class and Voyager-class ships.

Royal Caribbean International

5. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

The passengers are allowed to smoke only in designated areas of the outdoor pool area. You can also light up a cigar or a pipe within the Connoisseur Club. The Horizon Lounge on Seven Seas Voyager and Seven Seas Mariner and Galileo’s on Seven Seas Navigator also provide you with a smoking zone. You need to take note that cigar smoking is allowed in designated areas of the pool, but pipe smoking is not.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

6. Princess Cruises

Another great choice is that the Princess Cruise ships generally permit passengers to light up cigars and pipes in cigar lounges, in specific areas of nightclubs and casinos, and on portions of open decks that are marked as “Designated Smoking Areas.” You can also smoke while playing on a designated slot machine. The passengers are allowed to use e-cigarettes in staterooms and other designated smoking areas.

Princess Cruises

7. Oceania Cruises

Passengers are allowed to smoke only in the aft port corner of Horizons and the starboard forward section of the outdoor pool deck. Electronic cigarettes are permissible at most parts of the ships apart from dining venues.

8. Norwegian Cruise Line

Open decks, casinos, and cigar bars are some of the places where the passengers are allowed to smoke. You can also smoke on the starboard side of The Waterfront on the Norwegian Getaway and the Norwegian Breakaway . Garden Villa passengers are allowed to smoke in their private gardens and sun decks.

Norwegian Cruise Line

9. MSC Cruises

Every ship may have a different smoking policy, but sections such as outside decks and casinos provide passengers with a smoking zone. Passengers can also make use of dedicated cigar lounges, which are available on ships such as the MSC Divina .

MSC Cruises

Smoking on a Cruise Ship FAQ

Can you smoke on a cruise ship balcony.

No — at least on the majority of cruise lines. The one remaining exception is onboard Costa Cruises, where smoking is permitted on private outdoor balconies.

Can you vape in your cruise ship stateroom?

For the most part, vaping falls under the same guidelines as any other type of smoking on cruise ships: it is allowed only in designated areas and prohibited in staterooms.

The exceptions to this are onboard Holland America and British cruise line Fred. Olsen, which both permit passengers to use vaporless e-cigarettes in their cabins.

Is smoking allowed in cruise ship bars or casinos?

The permissibility of smoking in casinos and clubs has dwindled on cruise ships in recent years. However, there are still some cruise lines that allow lighting up in sections of these public areas. Even on cruise lines that allow smoking in casinos, this practice is typically limited to select vessels and during limited hours, so check your specific ship’s guidelines in advance of sailing. Most cruise line fleets have non-smoking ships or at the very least non-smoking nights in the casino.

For example, Royal Caribbean has smoking and non-smoking sections of its Casino Royale for guests, except for departures from China or Hong Kong, which do not offer non-smoking sections. On the contrary, Royal Caribbean ships sailing from Australia or the UK do not allow smoking in the casino at all.

Can You Smoke on a Cruise Ship?

Cannabis is legal in port. Can I bring it onboard my cruise ship?

Despite the decriminalization of cannabis in many places on land, cannabis and cannabinoid products — even with a medical marijuana card — are prohibited at sea. This is due in large part to the ship’s location in federal waters and its repositioning across state lines and country borders. Possession of cannabis on a cruise ship could be considered a crime, even if use has been legalized where you live.

Where can you smoke on a cruise ship?

Every cruise ship has at least one designated smoking section. The location(s) vary by ship and size. Most cruise ship smoking areas are located outside, though they are usually sheltered from weather. Some cruise lines also offer indoor cigar and pipe-smoking lounges.

Is there a place to smoke cigars onboard a cruise ship?

Yes. Most major cruise lines offer dedicated indoor cigar lounges. However, only cigar smoking is allowed inside, not cigarette smoking or vaping. For example, on Norwegian Cruise Line you will find Humidor Cigar Lounges on select ships; Churchill’s Cigar Lounge can be found across the fleet on Cunard Line; luxury line Silversea has the Connoisseur’s Corner. Premium cigars can be purchased in each one of these venues, along with cocktails.

Can You Smoke on a Cruise Ship?

What is the penalty for smoking in a prohibited area onboard a cruise ship?

Fines for smoking in a cabin or another forbidden space vary by cruise line but expect a minimum $250 cleaning fee. Repeat violations could easily result in higher fines, forced debarkation, or even a permanent ban from the cruise line. In summation: It’s not worth it.

Can You Smoke On a Cruise? Let’s Dive In!

Posted on Last updated: March 5, 2024

Embarking on a cruise offers a unique blend of adventure and relaxation. However, for smokers and non-smokers alike, understanding the ship’s smoking policies is essential.

Well, can you smoke on a cruise? Let’s dive in.

Can you smoke on a cruise?

Yes, you can smoke on a cruise, but only in designated smoking areas.

Each cruise line has specific policies outlining where smoking is permitted, including certain open decks, casinos, and occasionally, in private balconies.

Understanding Smoking Policies on Cruises

Cruise lines implement smoking policies to balance the comfort and health concerns of all passengers, whether they smoke or not.

These policies are influenced by various factors, including safety regulations, public health guidelines, and customer satisfaction.

As a result, smoking policies vary significantly across different cruise lines and ships, but they generally follow a common framework aimed at minimizing exposure to secondhand smoke and ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone on board.

smoking on a cruise

Factors Influencing Smoking Policies:

  • Legal Regulations: Cruise lines must comply with international maritime laws and the regulations of countries they visit, which may restrict smoking in certain areas.
  • Health Considerations: Public health guidelines regarding secondhand smoke play a crucial role in shaping smoking policies to protect the health of passengers and crew.
  • Customer Feedback: Cruise lines often adjust their smoking policies based on feedback from passengers to strike a balance between accommodating smokers and non-smokers.

Commonalities Across Cruise Lines:

  • Designated Smoking Areas: To cater to smokers, cruise lines designate specific outdoor and sometimes indoor areas where smoking is allowed. These areas are clearly marked and equipped with appropriate ashtrays and ventilation.
  • Restrictions in Public Areas: Smoking is generally prohibited in most indoor public areas, including dining rooms, theaters, and halls. This is to ensure a smoke-free environment where passengers spend most of their time.
  • Cabin and Balcony Policies: Many cruise lines prohibit smoking in all staterooms and on balconies to prevent the risk of fire and ensure the comfort of the next occupants. Policies on balcony smoking vary more than those for indoor spaces, with some lines allowing it and others not.

Variations Among Cruise Lines:

Each cruise line has its own set of rules and designated areas for smoking:

  • Carnival Cruise Line : Offers specific outdoor smoking areas and permits smoking in casinos and casino bars for active players. Smoking is not allowed in staterooms or on balconies.
  • Royal Caribbean : Smoking is permitted in designated areas on the starboard side of the ship, in casinos, and in some clubs. Balcony smoking is prohibited.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line : Provides designated smoking areas on outdoor decks, in casinos for players, and in cigar bars. Smoking is not allowed in staterooms or on balconies.

Where can you smoke on a cruise ship?

Where Can You Smoke on a Cruise Ship?

Identifying where you can smoke on a cruise ship is crucial for both smokers and non-smokers, as it helps manage expectations and plan for a comfortable voyage.

While specifics vary by cruise line, there are common areas across many ships designated for smoking.

Designated Smoking Areas

  • Outdoor Decks: Many cruise lines allow smoking on certain areas of open decks , typically on one side of the ship, to accommodate smokers while minimizing the impact on non-smokers.
  • Casinos: Some cruise lines permit smoking in their casinos, but this is often limited to players actively engaged in games. Areas within the casino might be designated as non-smoking.
  • Cigar Lounges and Bars: Specialty lounges and select bars on some ships are designated for smoking cigars and cigarettes. These venues are equipped with proper ventilation systems to ensure the comfort of all patrons.
  • Private Balconies: The policy on balcony smoking varies significantly. Some lines allow it, while others have strict no-smoking policies for all balcony and cabin interiors.

Considerations for Smoking Areas

  • Location and Ventilation: Smoking areas are strategically located and designed to minimize smoke drift and exposure to non-smoking guests. They are often equipped with adequate ventilation systems.
  • Signage and Information: Cruise ships clearly mark smoking areas with signage and also include this information in the ship’s daily newsletter and guest services directory.
  • Compliance: Guests are expected to comply with the designated smoking areas and dispose of cigarettes properly in provided receptacles to prevent fire hazards.

Where can you smoke on a cruise ship?

Where You Can’t Smoke

To ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all passengers, cruise ships also clearly define areas where smoking is strictly prohibited.

Non-Smoking Zones

  • Indoor Public Spaces: Smoking is generally not allowed in any indoor public areas, including theaters, restaurants, lounges (except for designated smoking lounges), and hallways.
  • Cabins: Most cruise lines have banned smoking in all staterooms to ensure the comfort and safety of passengers. This includes electronic cigarettes and vaping devices.
  • Balconies: Depending on the cruise line, smoking on balconies can be prohibited to prevent fire risks and ensure the comfort of adjacent passengers.
  • Near Food Venues and Children’s Play Areas: Smoking is not allowed near areas where it could affect food quality or children’s health and safety.

Enforcement and Compliance

Cruise lines are serious about enforcing their smoking policies. Violations can result in cleaning fees, fines, and in severe cases, disembarkation at the next port.

It is vital for all passengers to adhere to these guidelines to ensure a pleasant cruise experience for everyone on board.

Understanding the designated smoking and non-smoking areas on cruise ships helps maintain a balance between accommodating smokers and ensuring a comfortable, safe, and enjoyable environment for all passengers.

Electronic Cigarettes and Vaping

The rise in popularity of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices has led cruise lines to adapt their smoking policies to address these newer forms of smoking.

Similar to traditional cigarette smoking, the policies for electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and vaping aboard cruise ships are designed to ensure the comfort and safety of all passengers while accommodating those who vape.

Policies on E-Cigarettes and Vaping

  • Designated Areas: Most cruise lines treat e-cigarettes and vaping devices similarly to traditional cigarettes, allowing their use only in designated smoking areas. This means that vaping is typically not permitted in cabins, on balconies (depending on the cruise line’s policy), or in most public areas of the ship.
  • Indoor Restrictions: As with traditional smoking, vaping is usually banned in indoor public spaces. This includes bars, restaurants, theaters, and other communal areas where passengers gather.
  • Specific Guidelines: Some cruise lines may have more lenient policies for vaping compared to traditional smoking, allowing it in certain areas where smoking tobacco products is prohibited. However, this is less common, and passengers should not assume leniency without checking the specific cruise line’s policy.

Considerations for Passengers Using E-Cigarettes

  • Packing and Safety: Passengers should bring any necessary charging equipment and e-liquids they will need for the duration of the cruise, keeping in mind the safety regulations regarding batteries and liquids on board.
  • Discretion and Courtesy: Even in designated smoking areas, vapers are encouraged to be mindful of others around them, especially in close quarters or when in the company of non-smokers.
  • Compliance: Adhering to the ship’s policies regarding e-cigarettes and vaping is essential. Non-compliance can lead to the same penalties as those for violating traditional smoking policies, including fines and potential disembarkation.

How Cruise Lines Enforce Smoking Policies

Enforcement of smoking policies is critical for the health, safety, and comfort of all passengers aboard a cruise ship.

Cruise lines take a proactive approach to ensure compliance through various means.

Surveillance and Monitoring

  • CCTV Cameras: Many areas of the ship, especially those where smoking is prohibited, are under surveillance to ensure compliance with smoking policies.
  • Routine Inspections: Crew members may conduct inspections or be on the lookout for violations of smoking policies, particularly in cabins and balconies where smoking could pose a fire hazard.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

  • Fines and Cleaning Fees: Passengers found smoking outside of designated areas, especially in their cabins or on balconies, may be subject to significant fines and cleaning fees to remove smoke odors.
  • Disembarkation: In extreme cases, passengers who repeatedly violate smoking policies may be asked to disembark the ship at the next port, at their own expense.

Role of Staff and Security

  • Enforcement: Ship security and staff are trained to enforce smoking policies politely but firmly, ensuring that all passengers comply.
  • Education: Staff may also play a role in educating passengers about the smoking policies onboard, including informing them of designated smoking areas.

Compliance with smoking, e-cigarette, and vaping policies is a shared responsibility among all passengers to ensure a safe and enjoyable cruise experience.

By respecting these guidelines, passengers contribute to the health and comfort of their fellow travelers, creating a positive atmosphere aboard the ship.

Considerations for Smokers Planning a Cruise

For smokers, planning a cruise involves more than just picking a destination or ship; understanding and preparing for the cruise line’s smoking policies is essential.

Here are some key considerations and tips for smokers to ensure a smooth and enjoyable cruise experience.

Tips for Finding Smoker-Friendly Cruises

  • Research Cruise Lines: Start by researching and comparing the smoking policies of different cruise lines. Some may offer more smoker-friendly amenities, such as designated smoking areas, cigar lounges, and lenient balcony policies.
  • Read Reviews: Look for reviews from fellow smokers regarding their experiences on various ships and cruise lines to gauge the level of accommodation you can expect.
  • Consult with a Travel Agent: A knowledgeable travel agent can provide recommendations on the most smoker-friendly cruises and offer insights into the latest smoking policies.

Packing Tips for Smokers

  • Cigarettes and Supplies: Pack enough cigarettes, cigars, or vaping supplies for your trip, as purchasing these items onboard can be expensive and selection may be limited.
  • Lighters and Matches: Familiarize yourself with the cruise line’s policies regarding lighters and matches. Typically, passengers are allowed to bring a small quantity for personal use, but there may be restrictions.
  • Respect Regulations: Ensure that all smoking materials are packed according to travel and cruise ship regulations to avoid any issues during boarding.

How to Respect Non-Smoking Passengers

  • Use Designated Areas: Always smoke in designated areas and refrain from smoking in non-smoking zones to respect the comfort and health of non-smoking passengers.
  • Dispose of Cigarettes Properly: Use provided ashtrays and receptacles to dispose of cigarette butts and matches to maintain cleanliness and prevent fire hazards.
  • Be Mindful of Smoke Drift: Even in smoking areas, be aware of your surroundings and try to minimize smoke drift towards other passengers, especially in crowded or enclosed spaces.

Considerations for Non-Smokers Planning a Cruise

Non-smokers also need to consider how smoking policies might affect their cruise experience and take steps to ensure their comfort and enjoyment.

Choosing a Cruise with Strict Non-Smoking Policies

  • Research and Compare: Look for cruise lines that enforce strict non-smoking policies, including limited designated smoking areas and comprehensive bans on smoking in cabins and balconies.
  • Consult Cruise Line Details: Check the specific details of the ship’s layout and amenities to choose a ship that offers plenty of non-smoking public spaces and activities.

Dealing with Smoke Sensitivity

  • Cabin Location: Request a cabin away from designated smoking areas to reduce the likelihood of encountering smoke.
  • Use of Public Spaces: Plan your activities around non-smoking areas and times, such as dining in smoke-free environments and enjoying entertainment in non-smoking venues.

Reporting Violations of Smoking Policies

  • Know the Policy: Familiarize yourself with the cruise line’s smoking policy so you can identify any violations.
  • Report to Staff: If you encounter someone smoking outside of designated areas, report it to the ship’s staff or security. Cruise lines are generally very responsive to these reports as they aim to ensure the comfort and safety of all passengers.

Both smokers and non-smokers can have a fantastic cruise experience by understanding and respecting the ship’s smoking policies.

By considering these tips and preparations, all passengers can contribute to a pleasant and respectful atmosphere onboard, ensuring that everyone enjoys their journey.

The Most Smoker-Friendly Cruise Lines

While most cruise lines have implemented strict smoking policies to accommodate both smokers and non-smokers, some are known to be more smoker-friendly than others, offering more lenient policies and a greater number of designated smoking areas.

Here are a few of the most smoker-friendly cruise lines, along with reasons why they might be considered more accommodating to smokers.

1. Cunard Line

  • Cunard provides designated smoking areas on the open decks and in certain bars and lounges, allowing passengers more options to smoke.
  • The line also permits smoking in Churchill’s Cigar Lounge, catering specifically to cigar and pipe smokers, which is not always common on other lines.

2. Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines

  • Fred. Olsen allows smoking on cabin balconies, a rare allowance that has been phased out by most other cruise lines, providing a private space for smokers.
  • Designated smoking areas are also available on open decks, offering convenience and accessibility.

3. P&O Cruises (UK)

  • P&O Cruises offers designated smoking areas on the open decks and in certain designated smoking rooms, providing a comfortable environment for smokers.
  • The line has a relatively liberal approach to where smoking areas are located, making it easier for smokers to find a suitable place onboard.

4. MSC Cruises

  • MSC Cruises includes designated areas for smoking on open decks and in the casinos, where smokers can enjoy a cigarette while gambling.
  • Certain ships in the MSC fleet offer indoor smoking rooms or lounges, providing a sheltered smoking environment, which is particularly appreciated during bad weather.

5. Costa Cruises

  • Costa Cruises designates smoking areas on open decks and permits smoking in the casino, catering to both cigarette and cigar smokers.
  • The Italian lineage of this line reflects a more European approach to smoking, offering more flexibility and designated spaces compared to many U.S.-based lines.

smoker-friendly cruise lines

Considerations for Choosing a Smoker-Friendly Cruise

When selecting a smoker-friendly cruise, it’s essential to consider not just the availability of designated smoking areas but also the overall atmosphere and attitude towards smokers.

Smoker-friendly lines tend to provide clear information about where smoking is allowed, ensuring that smokers can enjoy their habit without inconveniencing others or breaking any rules.

Additionally, these cruise lines often have specific amenities and facilities catering to smokers, such as cigar lounges and well-ventilated casinos, making them more appealing to those who smoke.

However, policies can change, so it’s always a good idea for smokers to verify the latest smoking policies directly with the cruise line before booking their trip. This ensures that their smoking needs can be comfortably accommodated during their cruise vacation.

FAQs for Smoking on Cruises

Can i bring my own cigarettes or cigars on a cruise.

Yes, passengers are generally allowed to bring their own cigarettes or cigars on board. However, they must adhere to the cruise line’s smoking policies regarding where they can smoke.

Are there any cruises that allow smoking everywhere?

No, due to safety and health regulations, there are no cruises that allow smoking everywhere. Smoking is restricted to designated areas to accommodate both smokers and non-smokers.

How do smoking policies affect cabin selection?

Smoking policies can significantly affect cabin selection since smoking is prohibited in cabins and, on many lines, balconies as well. Smokers may prefer booking cabins closer to designated smoking areas for convenience.

What are the fines or penalties for smoking in non-designated areas?

Fines or penalties vary by cruise line but can include cleaning fees for smoking in cabins or balconies, fines for breaking the smoking policy, and in extreme cases, disembarkation from the ship.

Can I use electronic cigarettes or vape on a cruise?

Electronic cigarettes and vape devices are typically subject to the same restrictions as traditional cigarettes, meaning they can only be used in designated smoking areas. They are not allowed in cabins or non-smoking public areas.

Is smoking allowed in cruise ship casinos?

Smoking is often allowed in cruise ship casinos but usually only for players. Some cruise lines have designated smoking areas within the casino, while others may allow smoking throughout the casino.

Can I smoke on my balcony?

Smoking policies regarding balconies vary by cruise line. Some lines strictly prohibit smoking on balconies, while a few may still allow it. Always check the specific policy of your cruise line before smoking on your balcony.

Are there specific cruises recommended for smokers?

While no cruises specifically cater exclusively to smokers, some cruise lines are more smoker-friendly, offering more designated smoking areas and facilities such as cigar lounges. Research and choose a line that best fits your needs as a smoker.

Understanding the smoking policies on your chosen cruise line and adhering to them ensures a pleasant experience for you and your fellow passengers, making your cruise vacation enjoyable and stress-free.

Can You Smoke On A Cruise Ship?

Can You Smoke On A Cruise Ship?

Smoking on cruise ships has been a hotly debated topic in recent years. While some people enjoy the freedom to smoke while on vacation, others find the habit offensive and harmful to their health. So, can you smoke on a cruise ship? The answer is yes and no, depending on the cruise line’s policies and regulations.

Many cruise lines have implemented strict smoking policies in recent years, prohibiting smoking in most areas of the ship. These policies are designed to promote a healthy and safe environment for all passengers, including those who do not smoke. Typically, smoking is not allowed in any indoor public areas, including restaurants, bars, casinos, theatres, and cabins. Most cruise lines also forbid smoking on balconies and outdoor areas near food service areas.

However, some cruise lines allow smoking in designated areas. These areas are usually located in outdoor locations, such as designated smoking areas on the deck. These specific smoking areas often include ashtrays and smoking benches, and they are typically away from non-smoking areas of the ship. Additionally, some cruise lines have designated indoor smoking lounges or cigar bars, where passengers can enjoy a smoke in a comfortable environment. However, the availability of these areas varies from ship to ship and cruise line to cruise line.

Smoking Policies

It’s important to note that smoking policies vary depending on the cruise line and the specific ship. Some cruise lines have more lenient policies, while others have stricter regulations. Passengers should check with their cruise line before booking to ensure they are aware of the smoking policies on their ship.

Also, some countries and ports of call have their own smoking regulations. For example, many Caribbean countries have banned smoking in public areas, including beaches and parks. Passengers should be aware of these regulations and comply with them to avoid any fines or penalties.

Passengers who violate the smoking policies of their cruise line may face penalties. Depending on the cruise line, these penalties may include fines, being removed from the ship, or even being banned from future cruises. Passengers should respect the policies of their cruise line and be considerate of their fellow passengers who may be sensitive to smoke.

Smoking on cruise ships depends on the specific cruise line’s policies and regulations. While some cruise lines still allow smoking in designated areas, many have implemented strict policies to promote a healthy and safe environment for all passengers. It’s important for smokers to be aware of these policies and comply with them to avoid penalties and be considerate of their fellow passengers.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

cruise car smoke

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
