Small Ship Cruises in Thailand

Stunning scenery, delicious food, Thailand has it all and an adventure cruise is the best way to take it all in.

About Thailand Cruises

Thailand is a very popular destination for small ship cruises and island hopping. The Phang Nga Bay area near Phuket is renowned for resembling paradise on earth, while the Similan & Surin Islands off the Thai west coast have their own claim to fame. In the south, the Phang Nga Bay near Phuket is renowned for resembling paradise on earth, including Phi Phi Islands, Krabi, Koh Ha, and Koh Yao Noi. Famous for featuring in Hollywood movies such as ‘The Beach’ and James Bond: ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’, the scenic Phang Nga Bay is dotted with dramatic green, lush, limestone islands adorned with stunning white beaches. There are plenty of opportunities for swimming, snorkeling and kayaking. Some islands are hollow and can be visited inside at low tide for monkey and wildlife spotting. This is an all-year-round destination where you can explore caves and beaches and climb to island viewpoints to watch the sunset; adventure cruises in Thailand offer it all. Alternatively, cruise around the beautiful Similan and Surin Islands, located northwest of Phuket, 70km from the beach village Khao Lak. Established as a national park in 1982, the islands are well known for their rich birdlife on land plus spectacular corals and diverse marine life underwater, ideal for swimming, diving and snorkeling.

Best Thailand cruises and areas to visit

The two main areas for adventure cruises are northwest of Phuket : the Similan & Surin Islands, and the islands east/southeast of Phuket: Koh Phi Phi , Koh Ha, Koh Lanta, Krabi, and Koh Yao Noi.

Similan & Surin Islands

Located off the west coast of Thailand, the Similan & Surin Islands are a must-visit for their rich birdlife, vivid corals, and stunning marine life. The islands have been declared a national park since 1982. Wavy palm trees and huge boulders align the beaches of the Similan Islands, rendering a beautiful, rugged picture. The Similan Islands consist of 11 islands, all best known by their number. Donald Duck Bay, at the northern end of Island Number 8, is one of the most photogenic spots. It is idyllic, with pristine beaches and unique rock formations that are relatively easy to climb. The scenery of Surin Island, with evergreen forests, mangroves, and small beaches, surpasses even that of the picturesque Similan Islands.

Ko Racha Noi

Located 22 kilometers south of the main island of Phuket and 10 kilometers from its sister island Ko Racha Yai, Ko Racha Noi is a world-famous scenic bay. The waters around Ko Racha Noi are beautiful emerald green and home to scores of marine life, such as lionfish, scorpionfish, stingrays, and barracuda. Exploring the waters around Ko Racha Noi will be an unforgettable experience for anyone who snorkels or dives there, regardless of their level of experience.

Phang Nga Bay - Southern Phuket

Phang Nga Bay is a world-famous scenic bay located east of Phuket and includes the islands south of Phuket. The lush tropical limestone islands with white sandy beaches are great for adventure cruises on small ships as distances are relatively small. Swim and snorkel around the islands of Phi Phi , Koh Ha, Krabi, Koh Lanta, and Koh Yao Noi. Some of the islands are hollow, and at low tide, it is possible to kayak under the island and explore the inside. Enjoy the islands’ tropical jungle vegetation, birds and monkeys, and little villages, and hike up the hills to watch the sunset from a viewpoint or relax on the beautiful beaches.

Railay Beach

If you want to see the Railay Peninsula's beautiful beaches and mountains, then a boat ride from Ao Nang is your only option. Railay Beach  is just a 15-minute trip that will take you all around this peninsula and its incredible natural scenery. The three main beaches on the peninsula are: Railay East, known for its beautiful sunrise, but it's otherwise best avoided, as it is part of a mangrove swamp and doesn't make very nice swimming or sunbathing. Anyone interested in swimming and sunbathing should head westward towards the white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. Railay West is where we find most restaurants and bars on this side of the island. Several alleys connect it with the east coast.

Best time to cruise in Thailand

Cruising around the Similan & Surin Islands is best from November to May when the Andaman Sea is calm, and the weather is beautiful. The islands of Phang Nga Bay are great for adventure cruises all year round due to their more protected location off the east coast of Phuket. Thailand is famous for its incredible sunsets, especially with the picturesque islands in the background.

How to get to Thailand

Thailand’s capital Bangkok is one of Asia’s major hubs; all major global airlines serve this airport. From Bangkok, it is a short 1.5-hour domestic flight to Phuket, although many airlines fly directly to Phuket as well. Alternatively, you can fly easily into Phuket via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Phuket airport is a 50 min taxi ride to Chalong Pier from where your small ship cruise will depart.

Thailand Cruise Tips

Plan well ahead for your cruise adventure to ensure availability for your desired cruise and choose your trip at the right time of year. The same applies to arranging your flights and transfers; it is best to do that well in advance to avoid non-availability. It is highly recommended to book your flights to arrive in Phuket a little earlier, maybe 1 or 2 days before your cruise departs, to allow for any possible (luggage) delays and/or to get adjusted to the new time zone so you will be well rested. Thailand cruise packing tips include sunscreen, sunglasses, bathing suits, insect repellents, hats, light but long sleeve shirts as the Thai sun can be fierce, and a hoodie for chilly evenings. If you have your snorkeling gear, we recommend bringing it on your cruise as it fits you properly. Most boats also offer snorkeling gear on board, in case you do not have your own. Do not forget to bring a long sleeve shirt and shorts for swimming/snorkeling to avoid sunburn. Travel advice Visitors from most Western countries can obtain a ‘visa on arrival’ single entry stamp that allows them to stay for up to 30 days. Please check with the Thai embassy in your country for more details. Ensure that your passport has a minimum of 6 months validity from the date you will arrive in Thailand. Entry may be refused if a passport is damaged or has missing pages. You may be required to show a confirmed return or onward ticket to leave Thailand within the maximum days you are allowed to stay in the country.

Additionally, visa-on-arrival visitors may also be asked for evidence of adequate finances for the duration of their intended stay, equivalent to 10,000 Thai Baht per person or 20,000 Baht per family. The currency in Thailand is the Thai Baht, which you can withdraw from ATMs all around the country. There are also plenty of exchange booths at Phuket airport and around Phuket. The most commonly accepted credit cards include Mastercard and Visa.

Bangkok, Thailand Cruises

You will be amazed at the golden temples and palaces, the royal barges, and the Emerald Buddha found in the city. Learn about Thai culture or explore the hidden city's teak mansions and lovely gardens. The Royal Palace is a massive complex of carved and gilded buildings still used by the Thai royal family, famous for the story of Anna and the King of Siam. Visit the home of former spy and silk industry promoter Jim Thompson, who mysteriously disappeared.

Bangkok Highlights

Seeing a city from another perspective and knowing its highlights are the best ways to discover it.

1. Street Food

There has never been a more robust market for street food in Thailand than now, as most Thais prefer to eat out instead of cooking at home. On every busy road, street food vendors sell their products to tourists and locals alike. As you might already know, there is so much more to street food than Pad Thai. From Som Tam (papaya salad) to Squid, you will find stalls selling a variety of food that can be consumed immediately.

2. Shopping in Bangkok

Are you planning to do some shopping while you're in Bangkok? What a great idea! For modern and trendy shopping centers, head to the Siam district. Electronics and clothing can both be found at the MBK Center. In addition, souvenir shops are located in a bazaar-like section.

On the other hand, the Siam Paragon is chicer and has a lot of luxury boutiques. South Asia's largest mall, CentralWorld, is also nearby. During the day and into the evening, they are open. Thai and international dishes are available in their food courts.

3. Attend a Boxing Match

Consider attending a Muay Thai match while you're in Bangkok. As Thailand's national sport, it was inspired by the combat training of Thai soldiers. Muay Thai is a form of art, more than just a fight. A sort of simulated combat is practiced during the warm-up, called the boxing dance. A rhythmic rhythm is also adapted to the moves and blows of the fighters during fights. Whether you're a boxing fan or not, attending a match in Bangkok is a must. It is important to note that Lumpinee Stadium and Rajadamnern Stadium are the two most important Muay Thai stadiums.

4. Take a Muay Thai Lesson

There is no doubt that Muay Thai is one of the most famous martial arts in the world. A combat sport is called "Thai boxing" because shins, knees, elbows, and fists are combined in combinations to combat. People who practice the art devote themselves to it because it is a complicated and challenging sport. If you're coming to Bangkok, you can learn from those who have mastered the sport. Thailand offers Muay Thai training in many gyms, but especially in Bangkok. There are many stadiums, gyms, and gear options for May Thai fans here. Gyms for beginners are also available.

Interesting Spots to Visit

Whatever you are looking for during your visit to Bangkok, you will find many activities to enjoy during your stay, whether it be visiting the Grand Palace, the most beautiful temples, shopping in the modern part of the city, or visiting a floating market. Below are some places you can visit during your cruise to/from Bangkok.

1. Wat Arun

While in Bangkok, you should also visit Wat Arun. It lies across the river from Wat Pho and the Grand Palace. Boat shuttles (4 baht) drop you off outside the entrance for your convenience. An 82-meter tall prang (tower) in Wat Arun is completely covered in tiny pieces of colorful porcelain. The Prang is encircled by four smaller ones encrusted with mosaics. It is truly worth a visit to this recently renovated location. In the evening, you can view it illuminated from the other side of the river if you have the chance.

2. Chatuchak Weekend Market

It's a must to visit Chatuchak Market if you're in Bangkok at the weekend (it has more than 15,000 stalls). Upon entering, a map is given to you so you can find your way around. The market has many sections, including clothes, shoes, jewelry, souvenirs, and more! Food also occupies a large portion of the site, as you might imagine. Your Sunday in Bangkok is solved if you have no idea what to do! It's a super busy place, and you won't be the only one with the same idea. There is a large park nearby that you can visit to relax for a while. Thais are a popular place to picnic by the lakeside with their family and friends. During the week (not on the weekend), you can find the various products sold at Chatuchak market by walking along the commercial streets or shopping in the shopping centers.

3. Khao San Road

Khao San Road is a must-see on any Bangkok trip! Along with the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, this street is a major tourist attraction in the city. Backpackers used to frequent this area for cheap accommodations a few years ago. The site is becoming increasingly touristic, with Khao San road becoming one of the city's most cosmopolitan neighborhoods. Bars and restaurants are the places where everyone hangs out in the evenings. You can still find many low-cost hotels in this neighborhood, but it's not the most peaceful place to sleep in Bangkok.

4. Ayutthaya

One hour's drive from Bangkok brings you to the historic city of Ayutthaya. Siam features many temples in its ancient capital, a UNESCO World Heritage Site today. You should take this day trip if you only have time for one day trip from Bangkok! Ayutthaya is accessible by buses and trains every day. An organized day trip is also available if you don't want to manage the trip yourself. Buses depart from Bangkok for the journey. Ayutthaya's main temples will be visited during the day, and you will be returned to Bangkok by boat at night. The scenery will take your breath away!

7 amazing cruise itineraries to book in 2024

I don't know about you, but each year, as the weather turns cold, I start daydreaming about getting out of Dodge — or, in my case, Pennsylvania. My mind wanders to cruises that will take me to places where the temperature is warmer, but I also take a hard look at the (exceptionally lengthy) list of places I'm longing to visit.

After digging through what's new for 2024, I've come up with a shortlist of sailings that I think are noteworthy. They range from a standard Bahamas voyage with a new twist and an extended Alaska sailing that includes a foray across the Arctic Circle to more far-flung destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dream on, dear reader, and add these to your list of 2024 cruise itineraries.

Note: All prices listed are per person, based on double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Fares do not include taxes and fees.

Seabourn's 'Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas' itinerary

Last year, the Australia and New Zealand cruise region gained momentum following the pandemic shutdown. In 2024, the hardly populated Australia region of The Kimberley is gaining popularity. Luxury cruise brand Seabourn will be offering a series of six 10-night voyages between Broome and Darwin on expedition vessel Seabourn Pursuit during what will be early winter in the southern hemisphere.

The line's " Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas " will take passengers to places along the coast few passengers are able to visit to see the stunning teal waters and horizontal waterfalls of Talbot Bay, sample wines in the Hunter River Region and check out nature preserves in Wyndham.

Details: The first sailing, from Darwin to Broome, embarks on June 12. The final voyage, from Broome to Darwin, departs on Aug. 1. Prices start from $6,134 per person ($613 per person, per night), double occupancy, for the July 2 cruise. All accommodations are suites with balconies.

Celebrity's 'Best of Japan' and 'Vietnam and Thailand' cruises

The number of voyages in Asia was trending upward notably prior to 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought cruising in the region to an extended halt. And it's once again on the rise. Following that curve, Celebrity Cruises will be running new 11- to 13-night Asia sailings in 2024 on two ships — Celebrity Millennium and Celebrity Solstice — that bring stops in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand.

What's notable about the offerings is that they will aim to immerse passengers further into the destinations by including overnights in a total of 11 ports across all itineraries. That means more time to explore Hanoi's Old Quarter as the sun sets, indulge in nighttime gastronomy in Hong Kong, visit one of Bangkok's many markets, or learn why Osaka is known for street food.

Details: Celebrity Millennium's " Best of Japan " cruises run from early mid-March to early October. At press time, the least expensive fares — for a 12-night sailing — start from $1,330 per person ($111 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. It travels round-trip from Yokohama and visits Hiroshima, Pusan and other ports, including Osaka, where the ship will overnight.

Celerbrity Solstice's Vietnam and Thailand cruises kick off in mid-January and run through March. The ship will resume them again in the fall of 2024 and run through the winter season. Prices start from $1,255 per person ($105 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. The voyage sails from Hong Kong to Singapore with stops in Da Nang and Koh Samui, plus overnights in Hanoi and Bangkok.

SeaDream's 'Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles' sailing

Here's one to put on your radar if you're looking to book — but not necessarily sail — in 2024. It's a new Mediterranean itinerary that doesn't start up for nearly three more years, in 2026. The SeaDream routing brings stops at seven ports that are rarely visited by cruise passengers. During the seven-night voyages, there will be calls at Primosten, Croatia; Cesme, Turkey; Cetubal, Portugal; and Kythira, Kythnos, Syvota and Tinos, Greece — making these sailings unique and well-suited to anyone who loves the region but who's looking for new places to experience.

SeaDream's small ships, each of which carries just 112 people, are able to reach locales about which passengers on megaships can only fantasize. Couple that with excellent service, and you'll be visiting the Our Lady of Loretto statue in Primosten, touring the Cesme Castle and lounging on stunning Greek beaches from a home base that puts you squarely in the lap of luxury.

Details: An itinerary that includes three of the seven new ports is the 11-night " Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles " itinerary from Venice, Italy, to Athens, Greece, departing on Aug. 8, 2026, on SeaDream I. Prices start from $10,399 per person ($946 per person, per night) for a room with a porthole view.

Holland America's 'Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice' Legendary Voyage

Alaska is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys the vastness of untouched wilderness, the wildlife it houses and adventurous pursuits it provides. (Think whale-watching, hiking on glaciers and salmon fishing.) However, Holland America 's Westerdam is hosting a 28-day sailing that's anything but your standard cruise to the Last Frontier .

Passengers will visit the usual Alaska ports, such as Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau, with scenic sailing through the Inside Passage, past Hubbard Glacier and to Glacier Bay. But they can also expect less-common stops at places like Nome, Kodiak, Anchorage (with an overnight) and Homer. Plus, about halfway through, this cruise crosses the Arctic Circle — a rite of passage for many travelers.

Details: Holland America's 28-day " Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice " cruise — one of the line's Legendary Voyages, known for longer durations and a unique mix of port calls — sails June 9-July 7, round-trip from Seattle. Inside cabins start from $5,299 per person (about $189 per person, per night).

Silversea's summertime French Polynesia cruises

Another consideration for future travel is Silversea Cruises , which is featuring its first full-summer season in French Polynesia in 2026. Silver Whisper will offer two immersive itineraries, including overnights, across 17 voyages between April and September.

Passengers can choose seven-night sailings that visit idyllic favorites like Tahiti, Moorea and Huahine and which also include overnights in Bora Bora. Or, they can cruise for twice as long by selecting a 14-night voyage that calls on the same ports as the seven-night option but with Fakarava, Nuku Hiva, Fatu Hiva, Atuona and Tahuata added.

Details: Silversea's seven-night voyages begin April 6, 2026, and start from $5,650 per person ($808 per person, per night) for an ocean-view cabin.

The line's 14-night sailings start on April 20, 2026. Fares start from $10,450 per person ($747 per person, per night) for ocean-view accommodations.

New Bermuda voyages on Carnival Venezia

Beginning in May of 2025, Carnival Cruise Line 's Carnival Venezia will sail a series of eight four- and five-night cruises to Bermuda from New York. These itineraries are notable because the line is aiming to increase its presence there but also because the style of the ship is new to even most of the brand's most dedicated passengers.

In 2022, Carnival announced its Costa by Carnival concept after revealing it would be transferring ships from its Costa sister brand to the Carnival fleet. Now, when travelers visit the Gibb's Hill Lighthouse or check out the island's renowned pink-sand beaches during a sailing on Carnival Venezia, they can enjoy both the Italian style of the ship and Carnival's fun atmosphere and high service standards.

Details: Voyages kick off on May 22, 2025. Prices start from $429 per person ($108 per person, per night) for an inside cabin on a four-night cruise departing Sept. 18, 2025.

Disney Cruise Line's Lighthouse Point itineraries

Disney Cruise Line 's new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , a private destination on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, is set to open in June with a three-night preview sailing on June 6 aboard Disney Magic. Following the initial voyage, the line will run regular three- to seven-night voyages to Lighthouse Point on Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

The island will feature a dedicated family beach and water play area, an arts and culture pavilion focused on Bahamian culture, 20 family cabanas, an adults-only beach and a selection of shore excursion options.

Details: Prices for itineraries that include Lighthouse Point start from $624 per person ($208 per person, per night) for a three-night cruise on Disney Magic. The cruise departs Nov. 5 and sails from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Luxury Cruises to Thailand

On a cruise to Thailand, you’ll discover some of the world’s best unspoiled beaches, taste exotic flavors, and immerse yourself in cultural traditions that date back centuries.

Sail to the always exciting and enchantingly chaotic capital of Bangkok, where you’ll find magnificent temples, golden Buddhas, vibrant street life, and welcoming people. Discover some of Thailand’s best beaches in Ko Samui, where you can bask in the shade of a coconut palm. In Phuket, take in the splendor of golden-roofed Buddhist temples, and sample delicious food famous for its fragrant Thai spices. Luxury cruises to Thailand with Celebrity offer a genuine feast for the senses.

Thailand Cruise Highlights

City life in bangkok.

In Bangkok, life is vibrant, welcoming, eclectic, and chaotically exciting. Take in the sights via a canal tour and watch traditional puppeteers re-enact ancient folklore tales. Wander through the massive Chatuchak Market to browse and shop for handmade clothes, spices, crafts, and Thai fabrics. Enjoy a drink high in the sky on the 63rd floor of the State Tower, a skyscraper topped with a lavish dome, and take in panoramic views of the glittering city skyline.

Ancient Buddhist Temples

On cruises to Thailand, you’ll have the opportunity to see some of the most revered and ancient temples and Buddhist holy sites anywhere in Asia. Thailand is home to around 33,,000 active temples including the massive and ornate Wat Arun in Bangkok which lights up the skyline at night. Take a trip up Nakkerd Hill in Phuket to see the famous Big Buddha statue that looks over the city. For a more rustic experience, visit the terracotta-hued Wat Ratcha Thammaram in Ko Samui which pays homage to legendary sea monsters and ancient Buddhist warriors.

White Sand Beaches

When visiting Thailand, don’t miss world-renowned beaches like Maenam in Ko Samui, with over four miles of unspoiled, silky white sand underneath your feet. Try a surf class or snorkeling adventure in the bright blue waters of Kata Noi Beach in Phuket. Take a day trip to Pattaya from Bangkok, where you’ll find a lively entertainment scene, plenty of watersports, and great local beach restaurants where you can sample fragrant Thai dishes.

Thailand Cruise Ports

The brilliance of Bangkok isn’t just in its size, but rather how much just one city can offer when it comes to food, nightlife, history, and cultural highlights. Don’t miss a chance to see the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, a golden statue measuring over 150 feet long, and 50 meters tall. Tour the city’s famous sites via canal boat, or drift along the Chao Phraya river past intricate temples. Take a Thai cooking class then enjoy some of Bangkok’s best views with a martini at the rooftop bar at Vertigo atop the Banyan Tree hotel during your overnight stay.

Ko Samui’s famous beaches draw travelers looking for a complete, tropical island escape while still enjoying an upbeat local Thai culture and plenty of activities. Have an adventure on a 4x4 jungle safari tour to see some of the best sites like Namuang Waterfall, Mummified Monk, and Buddha’s Magic Garden, all in one day. Or take it easy on the calm shores of Maenam Beach, where you can lunch on Thai specialties with your toes in the sand.

On the mountainous island of Phuket, you’ll find palm-shaded, white sand beaches, adventurous jungle treks, and rich Thai heritage and traditions. Take a boat tour through some of the limestone islands in Phang Nga Bay where you can explore caves, mangroves, and rock formations that jut straight out of the turquoise-colored water. Browse for art and local handicrafts at the colorful shophouses in Phuket’s Old Town then visit the nearby Jui Tui Shrine, famous for its three ornate altars that pay homage to Chinese gods.
