STCW course and certificate requirements for  Cruise Ships  or  Super Yachts . So you want to work on a Cruise Ship or Super Yacht, your future employer asked you to provide  STCW certificates , and now you are wondering where to start and what courses you need.

Major cruise line companies like Carnival, P&O Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruises, MSC Cruises, and TUI Group would request  STCW training  from marine and non-marine crew members.

Each employer might require different training depending on the position you apply for and the vessel’s flag. The most common flags for cruise ships are Panama, Bahamas, and Malta.

The same requirements apply to Super Yacht recruitment as well.

A little history

S tandards of  T raining,  C ertification, and  W atchkeeping  (STCW) for Seafarers was initially an International Conference. It was originally held in 1978 at the  International Maritime Organization (IMO)  in London.

Subsequently, the STCW Convention has been revised, with the most significant amendments taking place in 1995 (stcw 95) and 2010 (also known as stcw 2010 or Manila amendments). STCW Code, in Part A, contains mandatory provisions with the minimum training standards required for a seafarer, based on their rank, to be able to get onboard a vessel.

STCW is a comprehensive set of international regulations that determine the qualifications and certifications required of all seafarers. The STCW regulations are agreed upon by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and are adopted and implemented in signatory countries worldwide, such as the US and Canada. STCW establishes minimum requirements for personnel operating ships’ qualifications, competencies, and responsibilities.

The STCW code applies to all ships engaged in international voyages and personnel on those ships. It includes passenger ships like cruise ships and Yachts, cargo ships, tankers, and offshore oil and gas platforms.

Why do you need to take STCW Training?

STCW certificates are a universally recognized document that enables seafarers to show they are qualified to work as crew members on ships of all sizes. An accredited maritime agency endorses the certificate, and must be updated periodically to remain current. Obtaining an STCW certification requires seafarers to complete a series of courses and take the necessary exams. It is essential for those wishing to pursue a career in the maritime industry.

STCW courses provide seafarers with the knowledge and skills necessary to function safely and effectively aboard a vessel. Depending on their experience level, courses may focus on subjects such as safety management, navigation, engineering, communications, crowd management, and human resource management. Upon successful completion of these courses, students are awarded an STCW Certificate.

This document shows they have obtained the required competencies and qualifications to be employed on ships under the STCW regulations.

The STCW Certificate is an important document in the maritime industry and is essential for anyone wanting to work in a shipboard capacity. A valid STCW certification is required for safe and effective ship operations.

STCW Certificates, where to start from?

Next, in this guide to STCW Certification, you need to start with STCW basic training, formerly known as STCW basic safety training (aka BST, basic stcw, and basic training). According to STCW Regulation V/2, all personnel of passenger ships, including Cruise Ships and Yachts, are required to take this training.

The training consists of a bundle of four (4) courses titled “ STCW Basic Safety Training courses ,” which every seafarer (marine crew) or non-marine crew, e.g., hotel staff, is obliged to complete before boarding a vessel. STCW BST is composed of the following:

• STCW Personal survival techniques (PST)  (STCW A-VI/1–1)
• STCW Fire Prevention and fire fighting (FPFF)  (STCW A-VI/1–2)
• STCW Elementary first aid (EFA)  (STCW A-VI/1–3)
• STCW Personal Safety and social responsibilities (PSSR)  (STCW A-VI/1–4)

The text in the parentheses indicates the STCW code section that each training applies to. Completing the courses mentioned above leads to acquiring the respective STCW Certificates.

But wait, there is more about STCW training (STCW 2010)

In addition to the STCW Basic Training, some companies also require other courses that were added to the  STCW 2010  amendments related to security, namely:

• STCW Security Awareness (PSA)
• STCW Designated Duties (DSD)
• STCW Crowd Management on Passenger Ships.  Includes Safety training for personnel providing direct service to passengers in passenger spaces.
• STCW Crisis Management and Human Behavior on Passenger Ships
• Ship Security Officer

When do you need to refresh your STCW certificates?

You must repeat (refresh) all four STCW Basic training courses every five (5) years.

Crowd Management & Crisis Management training also requires five (5) year refresh.

Security Awareness, Designated Duties, and Ship Security Officer certificates are for life (although some companies might also require refresh training every five (5) years).

Can you get STCW Certificates Online?

How to Become a Cruise Ship Captain

A cruise ship captain is the master of a cruise vessel. Captains usually have a college degree along with years of experience in shipping or naval navigation. They must be very experienced in analyzing speed, weather conditions and other factors that affect a ship's navigation, while controlling a staff of officers. The skills required of a captain include communication, customer service, delegation, and organization. The US Department of Labor Statistics expects the demand for ship captains to go up by 17 percent until 2016, but the competition for cruise ship captain positions will remain competitive. In fact, you may need to finish 4 to 8 years of schooling and obtain decades of experience to qualify. If your dream is to become a cruise ship captain, begin your preparations now and create a backup plan for alternate careers that use the same set of qualifications.

Receiving the Right Education

• In the United States, many aspiring captains attend a Maritime High School, which are generally located on the coasts or Great Lakes. Maritime High Schools are competitive in admissions and follow a particular curriculum established by the U.S. Maritime Administration, emphasizing English, math, and science with additional courses in maritime skills, law, and career training. Because this is such a competitive line of work, a diploma from a Maritime High School is highly recommended to increase your chances of becoming a cruise ship captain.

• The US Government recommends three units of math (algebra, geometry, and trigonometry); three units of English; one unit of physics or chemistry; and eight additional units in additional math and/or science, foreign languages, economics, and social studies.
• If possible, look for part-time work (during evenings, weekends, and summer breaks) in a shipyard or on board a ship or sea-going vessel of any kind. You will learn about ship parts, worker roles, chain of command, and ship repair, as well as gaining experience on the sea, which will help you to know for sure that a career as a captain is ideal for you. If you do not live near the sea or large lakes, try to find summer work on board a ship.

• A diploma and an above-average grade point average in high school are necessary for admission to a Maritime Academy, and even if you do not choose to attend an academy or college, you must have a high school equivalency to gain additional career experience at the helm of a ship.

• Attending a Maritime Academy is the fastest track to move up the ladder on a maritime vessel. Maritime Academies in the United States include California, the Great Lakes, Maine, Massachusetts, Texas A&M, and the U.S. Merchant Academy. These are funded by the United States Maritime Administration to ensure that the government has a steady stream of properly trained merchant marine officers. [1] X Research source
• In the event that you cannot find a position as a cruise ship captain (which is unfortunately a high chance, given how competitive the industry is), a diploma from one of these schools can help you find employment with the US government or as a merchant marine captain. If you are based in another country, seek naval education or experience, according to the best path in your region.

Obtaining Needed Experience and Certifications

• If possible, try to get an internship on a cruise ship. This will help you gain experience and determine that this is the right career choice for you. If you have the opportunity to do more than one internship while in college, try to get one on a cruise line and one on a commercial or government ship. This will help you to see the difference in these career paths.

• Although your career goal is captain, you have to start on the deck to gain needed experience. If you did not get a Bachelor's degree, you will have to spend thousands of hours -- and many years-- gaining experience as a deckhand before you can move up the ship hierarchy and become a deck officer or third mate, which qualifies you to take exams to become a captain. If you did get the Bachelor's degree, you can skip the deckhand stage altogether. [2] X Research source
• The exams test your knowledge and readiness and also entail a thorough background check, including a review of your criminal record and citizenship as well a physical exam and vision and hearing evaluations. • A Master's degree is not always necessary to get a position, but because cruise ship positions are highly sought after, it might make a difference in your job search. Many cruise ship captains do not have a Master's degree. You will have to decide if your experience is enough or if you could benefit from a Master's degree on your resume; for instance, if you did not attend a maritime high school or Marine Academy, and/or if you have not had many years of experience on a vessel, you may need the additional education to be a viable candidate for a position on a cruise ship. • Certification exams require physicals, vision tests, drug screenings and written and practical exams. Merchant marine academies train their students in the topics that will be featured on these exams. People who gain their qualifications through experience may need to take exam prep courses to ensure they pass the exams. Finding Work

• In the vast majority of cases, marine captains are promoted after serving as deck officer or third mate on that ship. The time until promotion varies by organization and company, as well as by your own performance in each position.

• For example, most officer positions for Norwegian Cruise Lines are given to Norwegian citizens. The exception is their ship Pride of America, which only hires American citizens. • Continue working as a merchant marine captain. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in this industry are growing with an expected rate of 14% growth between now and 2022, outpacing the number of new captains available, so the odds of finding a position in a freight ship are much higher than the odds of finding a position as a cruise ship captain. As the cruise industry becomes more competitive to find a job, cruise employers are requiring job applicants to have related education. What type of education are recruiters looking for? What are the best college courses to have for cruise jobs and which cruise jobs require a college education?

Best Education for Cruise Jobs

It’s not so important where you get an education as to actually getting an education. There are plenty of universities, community colleges, technical schools, and trade schools that offer courses that would give you the required education to land a job in the cruise industry.

Maybe you are just starting out as a student, wondering what type of education would be best to land a job on a cruise ship. Maybe you already have an education and you are trying to decide what jobs you could get based on your education.

Although there are some programs and courses that are specific for some cruise jobs, there are other degrees, diplomas and certification that are beneficial to get hired in other departments on a cruise ship.

Internships, Apprenticeships, and Co-op Programs for Cruise Careers

Although education alone is enough to boost your resume, having relevant work experience is equally important. Unfortunately when starting out as a student, it’s difficult to get hired especially in your field of choice.

That’s why, some of the most valuable courses or programs to take are those that include some type of internship, apprenticeship or co-op program. It’s a huge opportunity to gain practical experience in addition to the theory that you learn. Therefore, if a college can help you with an industry placement it’s a definite plus. It also looks great on a resume.

Keep that in mind when choosing a college to attend. Not all college programs offer an internship or cadet program. Therefore looking particularly for a college that offers work placement as part of the curriculum may put you at an advantage when you graduate. Although one program may be more expensive in terms of tuition, remember to balance out the benefit of real life work experience.

Education Needed for Deck and Technical Cruise Jobs

Jobs in the technical departments of a cruise ship require specific education and training, from a maritime academy or technical college. Furthermore, to get a job in the Deck, Engine or Electrical department on a cruise ship, you must have gone through some sort of cadet training program. Most cruise ships offer placement for cadets enrolled in an accredited cadet program.

Students enroll in a particular course of study that determines their career path. For example, Warsash Maritime Academy in the UK offers Merchant Navy Certification courses which include the Deck Cadet Programme and the Engine Cadet Programme . Alternatively, BCIT School of Transportation, located in Vancouver, Canada offers a Marine Engineering Cadet Program and a Nautical Sciences Diploma Program .

The cadets complete a certain amount of theory in the college and then are placed on a cruise ship to gain some hands-on experience. During their time onboard they must complete a series of tasks and have them checked off by a senior officer of their department. Over the course of the cadet program, the cadet must log a specific amount of sea time before getting their licence.

How a Bachelor’s Degree Will Launch Your Career in the Cruise Industry

For other careers in the cruise industry, a bachelor’s degree can help a job applicant get hired or crew member to quickly get promoted. Typically, a degree is awarded after completing a college or university course that lasts on average three to four years. Many students may even enter university or college without a clue of what they really want to do once they graduate.

Having a degree demonstrates that you have the theoretical knowledge to do the job that you are applying for. Once you are working onboard, having the education under your belt gives you an advantage when it comes time for promotions, too.

Although each cruise job has different job requirements, many positions onboard have education requirements that are similar. Here are some sought-after degrees for jobs on cruise ships.  For example, a Bachelor Degree in:

–  Business Administration for hotel cruise jobs, management cruise jobs –  Commerce for hotel cruise jobs, management cruise jobs –  Engineering for engineering officers –  Electrical Engineering for electrical engineering officers –  Computer Science for computer officers –  Music for musicians –  Culinary Arts for culinary jobs –  Recreation for cruise staff, youth staff, recreation staff, fitness trainer –  Human Kinetics for fitness trainer, cruise staff, recreation staff

College and Trade School Diplomas for Cruise Jobs

Four years may seem like a long time to attend a post secondary school. If you would like to develop skills for a specific job a cruise ship, you can typically get a diploma or certificate in three years or less. Community colleges and technical colleges offer a variety of programs and certification that can help you get hired in the cruise industry.

Similar to jobs that are attained by going to a maritime academy, there are other specialty colleges that can train you in a specific field. For example beauty schools can give specialized training to potential spa department applicants. Alternatively, a culinary college may be a good choice for those pursuing the career as a chef.

These additional diplomas and certificates can give the foundation of skills for a variety of cruise industry jobs.  For example, a diploma in:

Within the Hospitality Management master’s degree program, the Cruise Line Operations  Specialization , the first of its kind in the nation, offers students a specialization that focuses on the $23.8 billion cruise line industry. 

The M.S. in Hospitality Management: Cruise Line Operations  Specialization prepares leaders to design and develop customer experiences of the future as it provides students with unique, real-world opportunities to cultivate their academic experiences.

Leveraging its deep connections within the cruise line industry, the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management has enhanced its high-quality teaching, state-of-the-art research and creative activity with a degree that addresses the critical need for hospitality and tourism industry leaders in all aspects of the cruise line industry.

Curricula will cover cruise industry law including maritime law, port state laws and international treaties; cruise line leadership including human resources and general management, culture, policy and impact; sustainability including new technology, consumption, consumer demand and local infrastructure; and logistics and shoreside operations including forecasting, research strategic planning, customs, insurance, security and financing, etc.

With record-breaking numbers of “Sunshine State” tourists every year, Florida International University’s Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, sits in one of the most strategic locations for any hospitality management school as most of the cruise companies are headquartered in South Florida. Moreover, Florida is home to PortMiami, the No. 1 busiest cruise port in the U.S. More than 6.8 million passengers traveled through PortMiami in 2019, and the port is also home to 20 cruise lines berthing 55 ships. After PortMiami, Port Canaveral, No. 2, is home to 47 vessels and Port Everglades, No. 3, is home to 41 vessels. FIU is in a unique position to offer its students exclusive access to leaders embedded within the cruise line industry, real-time information and current case studies to instruct students on the most salient aspects of cruise line travel and operations today.

Of note, the global cruise line industry is also continuing its steady growth and will need a stream of professionals to fill new positions. Moreover, China is the fastest-growing cruise market in the world and is expected to be the largest by 2030. There are 12 new departure ports and up to three new home ports slated for construction in China. Pre-COVID, it was projected that the Chinese cruise line market would host roughly eight to 10 million guests a year. 

Cruise industry workers are employed on ships and also work in ports, in head offices, in travel agencies and in many other locations. The M.S. in Hospitality Management: Cruise Line Operations  Specialization takes this vast range of managerial pathways into consideration to prepare graduates for immediate application of their skills. The multibillion dollar industry is in need of managers to help support the massive numbers of tourists each year at more than 2,000 cruise line ports worldwide. Additionally, in 2021, 28 new ships launched and more than 17 new ships are on order to launch in 2022 and 2023. Experts indicate that pandemic-induced pent up demand for cruise line travel will propel the industry to new heights in the years to come.

With a wide range of careers, the hospitality industry is one of the largest sectors in the service industry and provides a large number of opportunities for those with an M.S. in Hospitality Management: Cruise Line Operations  Specialization .

Online master's programs application ($30).

GPA - Minimum 3.0 GPA in upper-division coursework.

GMAT/GRE –Not required if your undergraduate GPA is at least 3.0 in upper-division coursework.

Official transcripts -- All applicants must submit official transcripts from all previously attended colleges/universities. Transcripts must be submitted in sealed envelopes directly from the respective institutions. A four-year bachelor degree from an accredited institution as well as a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 in upper-division coursework is required. 

Proof of Degree -- Submit official proof of degree: a notarized copy of the original diploma is required if the degree is not posted on the official transcripts.   

Only those applicants who have submitted complete application packets will be considered. Meeting the minimum requirements is not a guarantee of admissions. 

International Students

Proof of English Language Proficiency. If you earned a bachelor's degree in a country whose official language is not English, you must demonstrate English language proficiency by earning a passing score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language ( TOEFL ) or the International English Language Testing System ( IELTS ). TOEFL required minimum score: 550 (paper-based exam) or 80 (internet-based). IELTS required minimum score: 6.5. When requesting official scores, please refer to FIU Institution code 5206. Carnival Paradise had just set sail from Tampa when it spotted the desperate US-bound migrants about 20 miles off the coast of Cuba,

The ship set a course to intercept their decrepit craft with the high-seas rescue taking place around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Fox News reported .

The cruise ship was bound for Roatan, Honduras when it spotted the Cubans.

All 27 were taken aboard the ship, where they were fed and given medical checkups.

The Carnival crew notified the US Coast Guard and officials in Roatan.

In a statement, Carnival put the number of rescued migrants at 28 and said the ship was still scheduled to arrive in Honduras on Monday but did not provide additional details.

Earlier this month, the US Coast Guard intercepted a ramshackle home-made boat off the Key West shoreline — and shipped all 16 migrants on board back to Cuba, officials said.

The barely-sea-worthy craft — the bow of a small wooden boat with the rest made of foam — was spotted by an eagle-eyed good Samaritan and picked up by the Coast Guard cutter Charles David Jr. on April 7,  according to a press release .

The migrants were taken aboard the cutter and shipped back to Cuba, the Coast Guard said.

Disney Cruise Line names its newest cruise ship

I t was bound to happen sometime, but Disney Cruise Line waited until its last of three new sister ships to name one Disney Destiny.

The sister ship to Disney Wish, which debuted out of Port Canaveral in 2022 and the soon-to-debut Disney Treasure arriving in Central Florida this December, the third ship in what was originally called the Trident class had its keel laying ceremony Wednesday at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

It won’t start sailing until 2025, and its home port has yet to be named, but among the details revealed for what will be the eighth ship in the cruise line’s fleet was the theme of the vessel, “Heroes & Villains.”

As such, the filigree artwork for the bow will be of Minnie Mouse wearing a superhero-style outfit complete with a cape.

The cruise line said among the characters from which it will mine features on board will be classic Disney animation films, “The Lion King,” “Hercules” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.”

Disney of course owns plenty of good vs. evil intellectual property including Star Wars and Marvel.

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager for the cruise line, in a press release. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising.”

Just like Disney Wish and Treasure, Disney Destiny will be powered by liquefied natural gas, a cleaner burning fuel that’s part of the cruise industry’s efforts to reduce emissions.

All three are the 144,000 gross-ton, 1,254-stateroom vessels but still targeting the 4,000-passenger capacity of its older ships, 2011’s Disney Dream and 2012’s Fantasy. The line’s first ships are the smaller Disney Magic that debuted in 1998 and Disney Wonder in 1999. They come in at 84,000 gross tons with 875 staterooms.

The line also is finishing construction for an Asia-bound cruise ship named Disney Adventure that will be the largest in the fleet at 208,000 gross tons.

Disney Wish became the line’s first new ship in more than a decade. It continues to do short three- and four-night Bahamas sailings while Disney Treasure will pick up seven-night trips to the Caribbean.

A company is turning former cruise ships into floating hotels — see inside its largest 'floatel'

Some old and unwanted cruise ships meet their demise at ship-breaking yards , where they are disassembled and sold for scrap.

Other vessels find a more fortunate fate, receiving a second chance to do what they already do best: serve as floating hotels.

Canada-based Bridgemans Services Group buys and charters former cruise ships to turn into "floatels," outfitted with standard cruise amenities like daily housekeeping, buffets, and relaxing lounges.

But the ships aren't designed to transport tourists from one destination to another anymore. Instead, companies turn to Bridgeman when they need to house workers for a long-term project, whether it be the construction of an offshore wind farm in Europe or the shooting of a major film in a remote destination.

Floatels can accommodate workers in remote destinations where hotels might not be an option.

In more metropolitan areas, Bridgemans says its ships could lessen the stress an inundation of workers might have on the local housing market.

And once they are no longer needed, the vessels depart and "leave no trace behind," the company said.

Over the last decade, Bridgemans has deployed its ships for 15 projects on every continent, Brian Grange, the company's president, told Business Insider.

Grange said that its deployments — most often for liquified natural gas companies — last for an average of two years.

In the past, it has also provided accommodations for MSC Cruises at its Ocean Cay private island and housing for more than 1,000 workers in the Philippines' on a project for the Manila International Airport during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company's three ships range from 150 to 652 cabins.

The floatel operator acquired its largest ship, the 561-foot-long MV Isabelle X, in 2023.

In its past life, the 35-year-old vessel sailed around the Baltic Sea as one of Estonia-based Tallink Gruipp's cruise ships.

But gone are its days of leisurely cruising. The 35,000 gross-ton ship is now on its first deployment in Howe Sound, just north of Vancouver, where it's housing more than 600 workers who are building Woodfibre LNG's "net zero" LNG export facility.

Isabelle X underwent a six-month retrofit before it was sent to Howe Sound.

The process included updating the ship's cabins and adding amenities like a game room and an 8,000-square-foot gym.

The latter two are especially important: "We need to make sure we delineate between work and home," Grange told BI. "We have to create a social environment on board these vessels that makes it attractive for workforces around the world."

During their free time, workers can play billiards, relax in the outdoor lounge, or use the ship’s WiFi to catch up on social media.

The sports lounge has large television screens, while the games lounge has darts, ping pong tables, and air hockey.

The 'quiet lounges' are the go-to space for people who need to unwind after a long work day.

Or, they could recharge and catch up on the latest shows in their cabins, which all come with desks, storage, and 32-inch televisions.

Like a typical cruise ship, Bridgemans' vessels have buffets with live cooking stations, a dessert bar, and the occasional themed night.

The ships' chefs tailor their menus to the demographic and dietary restrictions of the workers on board, the company's president told BI.

Residents can expect at least four protein options, plenty of veggies, and handmade bread and desserts.

Unlike most cruise lines, Bridgemans can pre-purchase all the food it needs before deployment.

Grange says this allows the ships to maintain food quality and consistency in remote locations.

Remember that deployment in the Philippines during COVID-19? He said the ship had packed almost 800 tons of food ahead of the project.

He wouldn’t disclose the cost to rent one of Bridgemans’ floatels.

But he did note that the cost of a cabin on the Woodfibre LNG project in Howe Sound is comparable to a hotel room in nearby Vancouver, as is the case with most of its projects near major cities.

The company’s most recent acquisition, the 150-cabin Diamond XI, is currently being retrofitted and would be ready for deployment this year.

According to the company's president, the vessel is small and high-end, likely to be used for sporting events and movie shoots.

It could also be the start of a greater expansion: He hopes to add two or three more vessels to its fleet in the next five years.

"The world has opened up to this as a valued alternative to housing," Grange told BI.

Who knows, the next time you see a cruise ship off the coast, there's a slim but possible chance it could be housing workers — not vacationers.

Princess Cruises' Star Princess ship delayed, 9 sailings canceled

Travelers will have to wait longer than planned to sail on Princess Cruises’ upcoming ship.

The delivery of Star Princess, which was set to debut next summer, will be pushed back by about two months. The cruise line said the delay was a “mutual” decision with shipbuilder Fincantieri.

“Following a comprehensive review of the remaining construction milestones, both parties have elected to adjust the ship's delivery date from July 29, 2025 to September 26, 2025, which will result in the cancellation of the nine inaugural sailings,” Princess said in a news release .

Guests whose cruises are impacted will be able to rebook on any Princess ship and, depending on which sailing they pick, receive future cruise and onboard credits. They will also be able to opt for a full refund of their fare instead.

“Despite our collective dedication and relentless pursuit to deliver the ship in late July, it has become evident that additional time is required to ensure the Star Princess is delivered to the highest standards expected by our guests,” Princess Cruises President John Padgett said in the release.

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

The ship’s new inaugural itineraries will include 11 and seven-day Mediterranean cruises on Oct. 4 and 15, 2025, respectively. Those will be followed by a two-week transatlantic voyage to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Oct. 22, 2025.

Those sailings will be available to book on April 30.

Star Princess will be the second in the line’s Sphere Class. Sister ship Sun Princess was also delayed ahead of its launch earlier this year, with Princess citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard.

• If driving, please park in the CYC visitor’s lot adjacent to Admiralty Way and accessed from the driveway which is between Café del Rey and the Warehouse Restaurant.
• Once parked, proceed by foot and enter the member’s parking lot by passing by the main entry gate.
• After passing the main entry gate, continue walking, bearing hard left along the chain link fence at the north end of the large parking lot until it ends at a dark green shade cloth covered rowing shed.
• We meet, at the rowing sheds which are opposite the tall bamboo plants separating the Warehouse Restaurant and CYC.

Participants should bring: athletic shoes (running shoes), socks, shorts, shirts, sunscreen, water, a change of clothes,

towel and personal items (hats, sunglasses, orthotics, inhalers, etc).

To keep all the gear organized, a small duffel bag or back pack is recommended.

Clothes should fit reasonably tightly so while rowing, hands won’t get caught in shirts and shorts won’t get caught in the sliding seats.

Dressing in layers and using wicking type fabrics is recommended.

Peter Duncan and Relative Obscurity Return to the Podium as J/70 World Champion at California Yacht Club

Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity has prevailed over 60 other teams and challenging wind conditions to capture the 2021 J/70 World Championship title at California Yacht Club, today. In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.

“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

The J/70 is 22.75 feet with an 11 foot long cockpit and deck-stepped carbon mast for easy rigging and stepping.

The crew shall consist of 3 or more persons. The number of crew shall not be changed during an event.

The J/70 Class has been created as a strict one-design Class where the true test when racing is between crews and not boats and equipment.

Well, chances are it will not be like Day 1 of the Pre-Worlds. Maybe more like Day 2. But then again, this is MdR—anything can happen.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.

California Yacht Club was established in 1922 and boated its' first competitive rowing team back in the 1930's. In 1977, after a long hiatus, Stan Mullin, Ken Jacobs and Charles Hathaway reactivated rowing at the Club. CYC rowers now number about 60, and represent all abilities, ages and motivations.

Adult Rowing - California Yacht Club CYC is a great place for adults of all ages and skills to row out of Marina Del Rey. We have more than 60 active adult rowers with a wide range of interests and motivations varying from recreational, fitness, social, open water, and racing.
