"I would just like to say, you do an amazing job, always helpful, friendly. Provide an amazing service."

Thames River Cruises

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers is the fastest, most frequent and reliable fleet on the River Thames - carrying over 4 million passengers last year. Unlike most other forms of public transport, we are always reliable - the only days our river boats don’t run are Christmas and Boxing Day.

Thames River Boats

Our Thames river boats are fully equipped with comfortable seating and plenty of space. Our larger river boats all have licenced on-board bars, with a range of coffees, snacks and alcoholic drinks. They all have toilet facilities, and some even have baby changing facilities. Our Thames river buses have Metro and City AM newspapers available on board and Free Wi-Fi is available at our main piers. The experience of travelling through London on a Thames river bus is unlike any other form of travel, providing an epic experience for its users. Far more enjoyable than struggling for space on a packed London Underground tube, quicker than driving or getting the bus, and less exhausting than walking or riding your bike!

Our History

Starting in 1999 with just one boat in operation, our fleet has grown exponentially to 20 high-speed Thames river boats, offering services from all major London piers every 10-20 minutes. Our services cater for everyone from early morning commuters to night-time passengers. There are countless reasons to choose a London River Bus over any other form of transport – choose a Thames river cruise next time you need to travel through London.

Thames River Evening Cruise | "Greasing the Thames with gold"

The River Thames, a ribbon of history snaking through the heart of London, has long been a source of inspiration for poets and artists. While Alfred Noyes, in his poem "On the Embankment," captured the stark contrast between the merriment within warm interiors and the harsh realities on the cold streets, his words also held a truth about the Thames itself:

“Within, it was colour and laughter, warmth and wine. Without, it was darkness, hunger and bitter cold…”

Noyes might have highlighted societal disparity, but the magic he hinted at within – the warmth, the laughter, the vibrant life –  perfectly embodies the experience of a Thames River Evening Cruise. As the city lights shimmer on the water and the gentle current carries you along, you’ll encounter the evening of a lifetime, coupled with sparkling wine, canapes, and live music.

Why go on a Thames River Evening Cruise?

Illuminated river project.

Unlike daytime cruises, the evening bares the artistic marvel of the Illuminated River Project. Imagine cruising under 9 bridges adorned with stunning LED light installations. Illuminated River is a massive public art project that will illuminate nine bridges along the Thames River, from London Bridge all the way to Lambeth Bridge. The Thames transforms into a canvas of ever-changing colors and patterns, when on a Thames River Evening cruise.

Perfect for any occasion

Get on an evening cruise, ideal for pre-dinner drinks, date nights, or hanging out with friends. It's like going to a bar, but better! Enjoy live music, tasty snacks, and amazing views.

Live entertainment

Sip bubbly, nibble on delicious snacks, and take in the stunning sights of London's landmarks. There's no tour guide talking—just relaxing music from a live performer. Choose between the cozy main saloon or the open-air deck, both offering prime views of London's riverside marvels.

Love in the air (and the views!)

The city takes on a whole new character at night. The daytime hustle and bustle melt away, replaced by a romantic, almost ethereal glow. Spot the vibrant nightlife districts like South Bank come alive, their energy pulsing from the river's edge.

Thames River Cruises in London: Options, Offers and Available Routes

Best River Cruises in London

The famous  Thames River Cruises in London are definitely one of the best things you can do during your visit to the city. And we would highly recommend it to anyone who is planning on visiting London, especially if it’s your first time in London.

By going on a cruise along the famous River Thames, you’ll see London from a unique perspective as it passes through the centre of the city. You will get to see most of the iconic buildings and landmarks of London, such as Big Ben (Houses of Parliament), the London Eye , Shakespeare’s Globe , St. Paul’s Cathedral , Tower Bridge , The Tower of London , The City Hall of London , the Shard … and many more.

Sightseeing Thames River Cruises: Available Routes

Before you book one of the Thames River Cruises available, it´s important to know that there are two types of routes that you can opt for:

  • Circular route: This route starts and ends at the same pier, so it goes up the river and then turns round to go back to where it started. It usually lasts approximately 45 minutes.
  • Hop-on Hop-off River Cruise: This options means that you can get on and off at different stops as many times as you like. If we’re honest – this is our favourite option as you can really make the most of it. To enjoy a whole day out, we would suggest starting in the area of Big Ben or the London Eye and head over to Greenwich. Get off at Greenwich, explore the area, and then go back to Tower Bridge and disembark at Tower Bridge Pier to have a wonder around the area of the Tower of London. You could then get back on board, and take the boat back to Westminster (London Eye / Big Ben).

Sightseeing Thames River Cruises

The best sightseeing Thames river cruises in London are the ones that are partly covered in our opinion, as you will be able to enjoy the cruise and the views in all weather conditions. Ideally, you want to be outside, to enjoy the cruise as much as possible, but if you know your cruise is partly covered, you won’t have to worry about the weather.

Sightseeing Thames River Cruises also include a tour guide, who will talk you through what you are seeing and what side of the river you need to look at. There are also headphones available to listen to the commentaries in different languages.

There are different options available when buying a Thames river sightseeing cruise to take in the best views of London:

  • You can buy tickets for a  circular cruise from Westminster to St Katharine’s dock
  • You can buy tickets for a  hop on hop off sightseeing cruise  with 4 stops: Westminster, London Eye, Tower Bridge and Greenwich.
  • You can buy tickets for a direct cruise that will take you from Westminster to Greenwich , perfect for visiting the Greenwich area.

Combining a Sightseeing Thames River Cruise with another London Attraction

Free thames river cruise when you buy tickets for the sightseeing bus tour in london.

When you buy tickets for the sightseeing bus in London, you get given a ticket for a free Thames river cruise  in London. The type of cruise included depends on the sightseeing bus tour that you choose. Some will include a round trip, whilst others will include a hop on hop off river cruise. There is time to go on a sightseeing bus tour and a river cruise in London in one day.

This is probably one of the best options if you are visiting London and want to get the most out of your trip to London.

London Pass

A London Pass card is a tourist pass that gives you FREE entry to over 60 of London’s most famous attractions. A one day access to a Hop On Hop Off Thames River Cruise is included in the London Pass. This is one of our recommendations on our suggested itineraries to make the most of the London Pass .

You can buy a London Pass for one day, two days, three days, six days or ten days. Making the most out of the London Pass isn’t very difficult at all, considering the amount of attractions included.

Fares and routes for River Bus Cruises

The best route on the River Bus for sightseeing is the RB1 commuter service route, which covers the stretch of the river from London Eye to Greenwich. It has the following stops: London Eye – Embankment – Blackfriars – Bankside – London Bridge – Tower Bridge – Canary Wharf – Greenland – Masthouse Terrace – Greenwich – North Greenwich.

On this route, you will pass iconic places like Big Ben, the London Eye, Shakespeare’s Globe, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and Greenwich. You can buy a Thames Clipper Roamer Ticket for this sightseeing route of the River Bus, enabling you to hop on and hop off during the day at different stops.

See all River Bus Routes here

River Bus service: Buying tickets, prices and transport cards

To hop aboard a River Bus you can either buy your ticket online in advance or buy one at the ticket office. If the ticket office is closed you can buy a ticket on board. As the river bus is part of London’s Transport system, you can use your oyster card to pay as you go or your contactless card to use the service.

Roamer Ticket Prices

A roamer ticket gives you the option to hop on and hop off the River Bus all day. The prices for this roamer ticket are:

Adult: £19.50 Child (5-15): £9.75

⇒ You can buy a Thames Clipper Roamer Ticket here

Prices for the hop-on hop-off sightseeing river cruise are £ 18.75 adults and £12 child. When comparing prices,  you’ll see that the ticket prices for the river roamer ticket and the sightseeing cruise are actually very similar. But I think you get a lot more out of a sightseeing cruise. It is a much more enjoyable experience, as you have a tour guide explaining what you are seeing, and you can enjoy the cruise on the deck outside if the weather is nice.

You can also look at the city cruises website for more ticket options.

Using Oyster Card, Travelcard and Contactless Debit Cards

You can also use your Oyster Card on the River Bus services. When you use an oyster card, you will automatically get a 10% discount on the price of a single journey ticket bought at the ticket office. All you need to do is tap your oyster card on the yellow card reader when entering and exiting the boat. The price of the ticket will depend on the travel zones used (central, east and west)

If you have a travelcard (either added to your Oyster Card or as a paper ticket) you can get a third off the ticket price. To receive this discount you simply have to present your travelcard at the ticket office when buying your ticket.

Children aged 5-15 receive a 50% discount on the price of a ticket and children under 5 travel for free.

London New Year´s Eve Cruises to see the Fireworks

One of the best ways to welcome the New Year in London is on a Thames River Cruise. There are many options available for this – you can have a four-course sit-down meal with live music or a more informal picnic on board, or you can even combine a meal at a restaurant and then hop on a boat to see the fireworks at midnight. Some are family-friendly too.

Folajimi Day established to honour River Thames hero

  • Published 19 hours ago

Folajimi Olubumni-Adewole

The family and friends of a man who died while trying to rescue a woman from the Thames have established an annual day in his honour.

Folajimi Olubumni-Adewole jumped into the river in April 2021 after a woman fell from London Bridge and shouted that she could not swim.

Mr Olubumni-Adewole, who was known as Jimi, was described by a coroner as "a man of courage and determination".

Folajimi Day, 24 April, will focus on selfless actions and helping others.

The woman and another would-be rescuer were saved by the coastguard and the Met Police Marine Unit, but Mr Olubumni-Adewole was not found in time.

His body was recovered about six hours after he disappeared.

Bolajj Olubumni-Adewole

A gathering at Cathedral Square in Southwark, where a plaque marks the place Mr Olubumni-Adewole jumped into the river, was held on Wednesday.

Organisers called for people to pledge their time to help others, "whether that is supporting a vulnerable neighbour, supporting a community garden, fundraising for a worthy cause or helping out at a food bank".

Living Bankside, a neighbourhood-improvement charity, has wider plans to dedicate Cathedral Square as a special place for peace and reflection.

Joseph Bonner, chair of Living Bankside, said: "May his selfless courage, kindness and positivity be an inspiration to us all. May his selflessness and compassion inspire people to commit themselves to helping others.

"Let us serve those in need in memory of him."

Mr Olubumni-Adewole's brother Bolajj said: "We hope people will be inspired by his story and will be encouraged to volunteer and be selfless in his name. Helping others is the best way we can honour Folajimi."

2 Royal Horses in 'Serious Condition' After Bolting Through London

"Two of the injured horses were operated on," the British Army confirmed after four horses got loose on Wednesday, April 24

Two of the royal horses that got loose in London are in a "serious condition."

On the morning of Wednesday, April 24, four horses belonging to the Household Cavalry — named Vida, Trojan, Quaker and Tennyson — bolted through the British capital after being spooked by the sound of some construction concrete hitting the floor while exercising with three other horses in the upmarket Belgravia neighborhood.

In a statement released on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Thursday, April 25, the British Army confirmed the three soldiers thrown off the horses were "expected to recover fully and return to duty."

The Army added, "Two of the injured horses were operated on last night, with one transferred to an equine hospital. All remaining horses are being closely observed."

"Our horses receive the highest standards of care, and those that did not undergo surgery are expected to return to duty in due course," the statement continued.

"We want to thank everyone who has shown such kindness and concern towards our soldiers and horses. We will provide more updates soon," it added.

Defence minister James Cartlidge told Sky News the two horses were "unfortunately in a relatively serious condition" following the incident.

"Obviously we will be monitoring that condition," Cartlidge added. "They are in a serious condition, but as I understand, still alive."

Per Sky News , the horses in a "serious condition" are Vida and Trojan.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson previously confirmed to PEOPLE that four people had been taken to hospital and were receiving treatment after the incident.

“We responded to several calls regarding an incident with horses on the loose in central London this morning," the spokesperson said on April 24.

"We sent multiple resources to the three scenes including ambulance crews, paramedics in response cars, and an incident response officer," they added. "We treated four patients in total and took them all to hospital and have now been stood down.”

The Household Cavalry is the senior regiment in the British Army and plays a key role in all of the major royal ceremonies. Most recently, this has included the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth and the coronation of King Charles .

“The Old Garden is a truly exceptional property,” James Williams, head of sales in Knight Frank’s Richmond office, said in a press statement. “Inspired by grand homes of the past, it is elegant and traditional in style, but with the benefit of modern comforts and amenities.”

Faced with French Anstrude limestone, the home is decked out with bespoke hardwood windows and a traditional Welsh slate roof. Inside, high-end finishes include Portland stone and oak floors, as well as a variety of granites and marbles. One of the standout spaces is the entrance hall, with its decorative stone fireplace reminiscent of  the Great Hall  in Oxfordshire and an elaborate carved ceiling based on the Ara Pacis  in Rome (9BC).

The home offers a slew of modern comforts, such as a 40-foot indoor swimming pool, a Klafs steam room, a movie theater, and a wine cellar, to name a few. There’s also a second pool, this one outside, and a championship-size tennis court. Naturally, given the property’s name, there’s a mature private garden with ancient wisteria trees and a large pond that serves as an ideal spot for wildlife watching. If you’re into that kind of thing, that is.

Beach on the Thames, London

The Thames could be safe to swim in… by 2034

If re-elected, Sadiq Khan has vowed to clean up London’s notoriously grim river

Maddie Balcombe

As a last-ditch attempt to cool down on London’s (albeit rare) hot summer days, I’m sure we’ve all wistfully dreamt of diving head first into the murky waters of the Thames. Thankfully, most of us come to our senses before actually doing so – as shown at the other week’s boat race , the river is horrifically (and dangerously) polluted.

But the Thames might not be un-swimmable forever. This week, London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced plans to transform the river, vowing to make it swimmable by 2034. Yep, it could take an entire decade to make the Thames even remotely hygienic.

Considering the current state of the Thames, a river clean up is welcome news. In recent weeks, London’s main waterway has hit the headlines with revelations of just how much sewage lurks beneath the water , with the river containing high levels of E. coli among other miscellaneous items like sanitary products and condoms. Eurgh, gross.

With the filthy state of the Thames at the forefront of our minds, you’d be forgiven for not being too enthusiastic about the idea of front-crawling your way through those waters. But remember, there’s still a decade to go before you’ll need to pick out your best swimsuit, pack a towel and get your goggles on.

It remains unclear whether 10 years will actually be enough time to improve the condition of the Thames, but you can’t blame a man for trying. London’s mayor has already had some success in making the capital a somewhat cleaner city, focusing on improving air quality and reducing pollution. Whether he can do the same for London’s waterways remains to be seen. Ten years is a long time, but turning what Sadiq Khan himself called the ‘national embarrassment’ of a river into a safe, swimmable body of water is a big task. He’ll also need to be re-elected at next week’s mayoral election (which takes place on May 2).

Who knows, in 10 years’ time you could be splashing around with the dolphins  and floating downstream past the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament. Wouldn’t that be nice?

In the meantime, here are Time Out’s 10 best wild swimming spots in and around London .

Did you see that last minute tube strikes have been announced for this week?

Dolphins spotted miles inland after swimming up the River Thames

P eople walking along the river in Richmond are used to seeing some interesting wildlife, but this weekend there was an extra special visitor to the west London town.

A group of dolphins were spotted bobbing along the Thames near Richmond Lock and Footbridge.

One walker said they called the fire brigade as they were scared the dolphins were trapped in the body of water.

James Moon told MailOnline: ‘I walked over the footbridge, went to the other side.

‘There was a couple of fire engines the far side, two fire engines under the bridge and another one coming and sirens and police and I thought this is a bit strange.

‘One of the firemen was saying they’d got called out because they thought [the dolphins] had been trapped or they were in distress.

‘They clearly weren’t because you could see them surfacing and messing about, the two of them close together.’

The whole scene unfolded at around 10.30am on Saturday morning.

‘They seemed to be fine going up and down occasionally. People were shouting.

‘There’d be a little dorsal fin come up and then you’d see the body come up,’ he continued.

‘There were loads of kids there and parents and everyone was watching and taking videos – it was great. Superb.

‘It was a nice sunny day and everyone was coming down and having a look.

Sadiq Khan pledges to make River Thames ‘swimmable’ within decade

Brands river ‘national embarrassment’ as analysis reveals five-fold rise in duration of sewage spills in london last year, article bookmarked.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has pledged to make the River Thames “swimmable” within a decade as he plans to transform the capital’s waterways.

The former Labour cabinet minister branded the river a “national embarrassment” as his own analysis published this year revealed a nearly five-fold rise in the duration of sewage spills in London in 2023.

Acknowledging the huge challenge facing the capital yet undeterred from his “moonshot plan”, Mr Khan told The Sunday Times : “We won’t do this overnight. It will take us a few years to do – but the great thing is there’s an appetite from Londoners and campaigners.”

His announcement echoes a proposal by the Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo to reopen the Seine to swimmers to create an Olympic legacy for the city. The river is currently being cleaned so swimming events for the 2024 games later this year will be able to happen in its waters.

The opening of London’s new £5 billion 16-mile “super sewer” this summer is bringing environmentalists hope the state of the Thames is set to improve. The Tideway Tunnel will join 34 storm overflow drains as well as divert sewage to an east London treatment works, consequently reducing the amount of waste being pumped into the river, according to engineers.

It comes as television naturalist Steve Backshall called the Thames “toxic” last week.

Mr Backshall, who lives near to the river, told the BBC: “I’ve been living here for ten years, kayaking this stretch of river for at least 25, and what’s happened to it in recent years is absolutely heartbreaking. Right now I wouldn’t go in the river, and I would seriously reach out to anyone who is a wild swimmer, or anyone who uses the river in any capacity, to stay out of it until it has been given a chance to clear.”

Meanwhile, River Action found levels of E. coli in the Thames were 10 times higher than what the Environment Agency deems acceptable for swimming when the charity tested the water at Hammersmith Bridge.

Speaking near to the banks of the Thames in Isleworth, west London, Mr Khan said: “We’ve made huge progress in cleaning up London’s air, exceeding expectations. Now it’s time to clean up our waterways too and build a plan to make rivers in London swimmable again within ten years.

“The levels of sewage that water companies are pouring into our rivers is a scandal. Thames Water urgently need to up its game and get a grip of the situation. Thankfully, Labour is committed to tough new legislation to get these companies in line, including new rules around restricting pay and bonuses for those companies who fail to up their game.

“The mayoralty does not have the power or resources needed to, on its own, turn around the decline of our rivers. However, I have seen what can be done that others thought impossible in terms of cleaning our air.

“It just needs political will, and determination across the political spectrum to deliver real change. I will commit to bringing together the companies, government agencies and campaigners to work together on a 10-year plan to get London’s rivers so clean they are safe to swim in.”

Thames Water has been fined significantly for pollution and leaks, while previous shareholders took out billions of pounds of dividends, leaving the utility in a dire financial situation. Mr Khan branded the company’s behaviour “grossly negligent”, claiming it is an “appalling advert for privatisation”.

The mayor’s announcement focusing on tackling water pollution is the latest in his ongoing environmental crusade. It follows his mission to combat air pollution in the capital, which involved resisting a U-turn on expanding the ultra-low emissions zone (Ulez) last summer.

As the 2 May elections approach, Mr Khan is aiming to appeal to Green and Lib Dem voters, as green policies are expected to be a dividing line in the campaign. He has pledged to invest at least £30 million in nature during his next mayoral term, which will partly go towards planting and rewilding, such as the return of bats and water otters to the Thames.

Mr Khan said: “For the first time in more than 400 years beavers are back in west London and the first two are called Justin Beaver … and Sigourney Beaver. And they’ve had kids. The great thing about beavers is they build natural dams. So, the whole point about rewilding is actually … because they can do things naturally that benefit us and stops flooding.”

A Thames Water spokesperson told The Independent : “We regard all discharges as unacceptable and taking action to improve the health of rivers is a key focus for us.

“We appreciate how much our waterways are loved and we want everyone to be able to enjoy them. In London, the Thames Tideway Tunnel, a £4.5billion investment, is nearing completion.

“This project, combined with previous upgrades we’ve made to our London sewage works and the building of the Lee Tunnel, will capture 95 per cent of the volume of untreated sewage currently entering the tidal Thames in a typical year.

“We have also started the £100million upgrade of Mogden sewage treatment works, which will increase capacity and reduce the number of storm discharges from the site, and we’re also spending £145million upgrading Beckton sewage works.”

London Tide creator Ben Power on power of the Thames – and why Dickens' London is 'our London'

The National Theatre's new adaptation of Charles Dickens' Our Mutual Friend places the Thames at the heart of the action

For every day of the 10 years that I worked full-time at the National Theatre, commissioning plays and writing adaptations for the stage, I walked along the river front that runs outside the building. When the NT was sited on the South Bank in the early 60s, the location next to the Thames was carefully chosen.

The National wasn’t built in the West End, in Covent Garden or Soho or the traditional entertainment hubs of the city. It was placed next to the Thames. King’s Reach, this particular corner alongside Waterloo Bridge, is the only spot on the river where one can look west and see parliament, and turn and look east and see St Paul’s.

The institutional homes of the country’s political and religious power, and here in the middle, a concrete cathedral of ideas and stories. Between them the water, running through, joining everything together. Every time I walked along the river, I thought how much I wanted to tell a London story, and especially a river story, on the stage of the National.

I was born in another city on the water, Manchester, and before I moved to London I read and fell in love with the work of Charles Dickens, perhaps the greatest of all the chroniclers of the capital. I saw London through Dickens’ eyes before I saw it through my own. He spent his life walking the streets and watching the river and he saw the great, hungry city in its full extraordinary complexity. He writes of poverty and deprivation, of exploitation and hypocrisy, but he also celebrates, again and again, the power of the city and the community to affect change. And central to this sense of possibility is the river.

In Dickens’ final completed novel, the labyrinthine gothic masterpiece Our Mutual Friend, the Thames is as much of a protagonist as any of the vast ensemble of characters. The dockside communities of Limehouse and Deptford get their living from the water. The tides and currents provide the clock and calendar of days and years.

The rich characters sail on the river, the poor characters work upon it. The water unites them both. Then, as now, it is the great leveller. And for Dickens, the river stands for life and death. Bodies go into the water. Characters emerge reborn from its depths. The Thames stands as the great ancient judge of Londoner. No one, high-born or low, escapes its gaze.

I had a hunch that an adaptation of this book could be the river story I was seeking for the National Theatre. I began to work with the brilliant director Ian Rickson, a born and bred south Londoner. Ian introduced me to PJ Harvey , another incomer to the city, this time from the West Country, and a storyteller whose ability to conjure place and atmosphere matches Dickens’ own.

We began the mammoth task of adapting and reshaping the book and PJ began to write songs that could live alongside the scenes, deepening character and emotion and bringing this old story into our current age. Since we began to make London Tide , as we called our new play, we have seen a global pandemic and a cost of living crisis that have made the inequalities of the city as stark as ever.

Dickens’ London is our London. He writes of a city where extreme wealth lives cheek by jowl with homelessness and need. The housing crises , food poverty , the postcode lottery of opportunity, would have been very familiar to him . In his work, he looks unflinchingly at the cruelty and relentlessness of urban life and yet somehow, he retains a deep well of hope. Because just as the city consumes, so it redeems. Dickens believes, and our play believes, that the city can save us. In fact, he believes that the community and connections allowed by the city might be the only hope we have of saving each other.

One stormy day in February, the company of London Tide stood on the deck of a paddle steamer and looked out at the swelling, swirling river. Chris Livett, a waterman from a family of watermen, many generations of fathers and sons, told us of his life spent more on the water than on land. He told us of bodies found and lives saved. He explained the myriad ways in which the Thames reaches into every aspect of London life.

The river is the city. We sailed past waterside communities that still hold to the industry which Dickens would have seen up and down the river and past shiny new apartment blocks owned by the global elite. London, in all its complexity, flowed around us.

When audiences leave the NT after a performance of London Tide, they will be back next to the Thames and confronted again with the power and potency of the river. They will be able to watch the tide that connects us back to Dickens’ London and back even further, joining us in an ancient community of Londoners, those born here and those drawn here. As Chris Livett reminded us as we sailed on the river: “the water remains the same”.

London Tide  is in the Lyttelton, National Theatre from 10 April-22 June – with adaptation and lyrics written by Ben Power.
