Cruise ships return to Tasmania for the first time since COVID ban despite new cases on WA liner

A large cruise ship docks at Hobart on a rainy day.

The first cruise ship to dock in Tasmania since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic has arrived in Hobart this morning, carrying around 3,000 passengers and crew.

Key points:

  • The Pacific Explorer is the first of 150 ship arrivals this season, which are expected to bring 150,000 tourists to the state over the next six months
  • Destination Southern Tasmania says this season will be a big boost for a lot of operators and businesses that have struggled during the pandemic
  • The return came amidst news that passengers and crew on Coral Princess, the first cruise liner to enter WA in over two years, were forced to isolate with COVID-19

The Pacific Explorer is the first to dock in two years after the federal government imposed a ban on cruise liners in an effort to control the rising tide of cases at the time.

It is the first of 150 ship arrivals this season, which are expected to bring 150,000 tourists to the state over the next six months.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said cruises were an important contributor to Tasmania's visitor economy.

"Many Tasmanian businesses are celebrating today's arrival of the Pacific Explorer and the start of the 2022-23 cruise season," he said.

For Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, a regular destination for cruise visitors, the return is a godsend.

"For us at Bonorong, cruise ships are massive," director Greg Irons said.

"It's a really exciting point for us, we have battled our way through the last three years ... 15,000 animals a year needing help, we are reliant on people coming through these doors to basically fund that.

"So we've been operating at times at 30 per cent of our normal income with 69 paid staff, it's a lot to recover. So for us, not only do cruise ships bring in vital funds, they're so exciting and vibrant, the place comes to life."

Callie pulls on Greg's shirtsleeve as he watches on in amusement.

Destination Southern Tasmania's Alex Heroys said this season would be a big boost for a lot of operators and businesses that have struggled during the pandemic.

"We're really excited about the return of this sector, we're looking forward to welcoming nearly 200,000 passengers over the entire season and this gives us a greater opportunity to showcase Tasmania," he said.

Local shop owner Jennifer Cossins said not having cruise ships had affected them "quite a lot".

"All the stallholders here are artists, we all create our own products and having cruise ships and tourists come in who are looking to buy quality Tasmanian art is really important to us," she said.

"The last few years have been a little bit tough, but we're excited that the ships are back."

COVID cases spark lockdown on WA cruise

The return came amidst news yesterday that passengers and crew on the first cruise liner to enter Western Australia in over two years — the Coral Princess —  were forced to isolate for five days with COVID-19 symptoms .

"WA Health has been advised of passengers and crew testing positive to COVID-19, and this evolving situation is being managed by the vessel operator according to its COVID-19 plan," a WA Health spokesperson said.

"Under the protocols, those onboard vessels who have COVID should isolate for five days."

A spokesperson for the company operating the vessel, Princess Cruises, said the rise in COVID-19 cases aboard was being "managed effectively" in accordance with national and state protocols.

Tourism Industry Council chair Daniel Leesong said living with COVID was "the new normal" but that arrivals needed to be carefully managed.

"Industry has to get on with it and society has to get on with it. The time for lockdowns is passed, and what we really need to see is people returning to normality," he said.

"We don't want to see three large cruise ships on any one day, we don't want to see flooding of Salamanca Market. What we want to do is ensure that people are staged in a way that really maximises the experience for everybody involved.

"The very thing that Tasmania is known for is its local, friendly attitude, and it's known for its uncrowded attractions. We want to make sure we manage it appropriately so those uncrowded attractions remain really top of the tree."

Business management consultant KPMG found luxury cruise ships, which carry around 600 passengers, spend more and are worth around $397,000 to the economy.

Larger ships generate around $539,000, while mega-ships spend less and produce more emissions, it found.

Situated on the west bank of the Derwent River the city in many ways retains the flavor of a small town with a leisurely pace and a population of 160 000. One of the most beautiful capitals in the world, Hobart is set under the towering peak of Mount Wellington and has a deep water port rivaling Sydney harbor.

Founded in1804 by Colonel David Collins, Hobart is the second oldest city in Australia. It grew out of the first settlement on the island at Risdon Cove, eight kilometers up river, which was founded in 1803 and abandoned five months later for the present site of Hobart. Ridson Cove remains today much as it was 190 years ago and is an unique tourist attraction.

There are many fine examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture, including, Salamanca Place which has a terrace of warehouses dating back to the whaling days of the 1830's. Nearby Battery Point, the original sea mens quarters of the city and Maquarie and Davey Street offer more than 60 buildings classified by the National Trust.

Hobart, Tasmania, Australia

Hobart: tourist information

Hobart is Australia's southernmost capital city and the country's second oldest. The fact that it is also the smallest is a key to its particular charm. A riverside city with a busy harbour, its mountain backdrop offers fine views over the compact suburbs below. Its beautiful Georgian buildings (even the harbourside warehouses are picturesque), relaxed atmosphere, numerous parks and attractive homes make Hobart one of the most enjoyable and engaging of Australia's cities.Hobart is in the south-east of the state, in the middle of a series of islands and peninsulas that surround Storm Bay. It lies at the foot of Mt Wellington, and is approached from the north by the Tasman bridge and highway. Queen's Domain and the botanical gardens feed into the grid of the central business area, which is just minutes away from the wharves that line Sullivans Cove. The waterfront area is the focus for the city's events and the location of most tourist attractions. South from here is Sandy Bay, the site of Hobart's university and the Wrest Point Hotel Casino. The airport is in Hobart's eastern suburbs, 16km (10mi) from the city centre. Buses leave from the Transit Centre, to the west of the city centre, and from Hobart Coaches, right in the city.

Accommodation in Hobart ranges from backpackers' hostels and quaint but sometimes expensive B&Bs and guesthouses, to harbourside pubs and four-star hotels. Because of the city's tiny proportions, it's possible to stay conveniently close to the city's attractions and food outlets. The main areas for budget accommodation are the city centre and the older suburbs to the north and west. Middle and upper-end accommodation is spread all over town.

The working harbour is home to Antarctic supply vessels and fishing boats from the Southern Ocean.

This panorama is complemented by the constant array of cruise ships arriving from November to April, berthing to the warm welcome of the Lord Mayor and Town Crier.

Voted by Dream World Cruise Destinations as winner of the Most Receptive Destination category, and runner-up in the Best Destination for the Rest of the World Region in the 1997 Awards, Hobart continues to be regarded by cruise ship passengers as one of the region's most friendly, exciting and diverse destinations.

Hobart boasts a myriad of attractions for visitors, including the unique Antarctic Adventure, bustling Salamanca Place and the city centre all within a stone's throw of the wharf. The city is a vibrant place that cherishes its past, yet looks forward to the challenges of the future.

It plays host to the famous Salamanca Market held every Saturday between 8.30 am and 3.00 pm. Quality Tasmanian arts and crafts, fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers, clothing, jewellery, books and lots more all jostle for space on over 300 stalls.

Sunday through to Friday, Salamanca Place is home to a myriad of arts and crafts shops, theatre companies, galleries and restaurants.

City Sights and Mount Wellington (half-day)

The Park offers tourists a unique opportunity to view Tasmanian and Australian wildlife in their natural habitat. Come and see the koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, emus and the renowned Tasmanian Devil. Tourists can experience a real bush treat of billy tea and damper or a traditional barbecue lunch.

Par Avion Wilderness Tours (half-day)

Par Avion offers scenic flights to Tasmania's South West World Heritage National Park. The scenic flights allow you to witness some of the most remote and pristine wilderness to be found anywhere in the world. Full day tours offer a beach landing and gourmet lunch at a wilderness camp. Richmond Town (half-day)

Only 25 km from Hobart, the historic town of Richmond is Australia's finest Georgian village. It boasts world-famous attractions such as the country's oldest preserved colonial convict gaol, Bridge and Catholic Church. Visit Hobart as it was in the 1820's at Old Hobart Town historical model village and browse in Richmond's antique shops, art and craft galleries.

Make a day of it… visit Richmond and then the boutique wineries of the nearby Coal River Valley - the new Meadowbank Estate is a great place to start.

Southern Forests (full-day)

Experience first hand the famous Southern Forests by visiting the newly-opened Tahune Forest Airwalk. The height of the airwalk ranges from 20 metres to 45 metres above ground level offering a unique insight into life in the canopy of a rainforest. Stand amidst the 80 m tall eucalypts, Huon pine, myrtle, blackwood and sassafras and take in the spectacular views of the Huon River and its confluence, the Picton River.

Port Arthur Historic Site (full-day)

Port Arthur Historic Site, located on the Tasman Peninsula and just one and a half hours drive from Hobart. It is one of Australia's premier heritage sites and Tasmania's most visited tourist attraction. The remains of the remote penal settlement serve as a sometimes chilling reminder of a rich and colourful chapter in Tasmania's colonial past. Port Arthur began operating in 1830 as a timber station but in 1833 it became a prison settlement for male convicts and quickly established a reputation as ‘hell on earth'.

Today, the Port Arthur Historic Site encompasses over 40 hectares and features a large number of stabilised ruins and restored buildings from the convict era.
