Step into the pages of a fairy tale in Sintra, a UNESO World Heritage Site a short ride from Lisbon. The city's awash in colorful buildings and grand forts, including the Romanticist architecture of the pastel-hued Pena Palace — more like a castle, really — and the extravagant Quinta da Regalaira villa. Or, wander through gardens inspired by Dante's "Inferno."

Cruises in Portugal: The Top 6 Cruise Holidays You Must Take

Are you looking for a way to explore Portugal just as the country’s famous explorers Vasco da Gama and Bartolomeu Dias did? Or perhaps you are looking for a luxurious and all-inclusive getaway abroad.

Today we’ll discuss what cruises are available in and to Portugal, which are the best ones to board and answer some common questions about cruise ships in Portugal.

Cruises in Portugal

Portugal is considered one of Europe’s top countries for both river cruises down the stunning Douro River and Mediterranean cruises that visit Spain, Italy and more.

Immune to the economic crises, the cruise industry continues to grow with more than 1.3 million cruise passengers entering the Portuguese ports just in 2017.

So, if you’re looking for a holiday where you can explore parts of Portugal without having to worry about anything else: accommodation, food, entertainment, are all taken care of, then this will be your kind of trip.

Should You Choose a Mediterranean Cruise or a River Cruise?

Choosing between the two types of cruises is not easy, it will all depend on how much time you have and what kind of experiences you’re looking for. Here’s a brief description of what you can expect from each type of cruise.

Mediterranean cruises in Portugal

A Mediterranean cruise from Portugal will take you along the coast from Lisbon to Porto and then onwards to other destinations like Spain.

These types of cruises are a comprehensive way to explore the Iberian Peninsula as they include accommodation, meals, and daily tours.

River Cruises in Portugal

Douro River Cruise

The Douro River is the main river where cruises depart from in Portugal.

It’s perfect if you want to wake up to incredible views each morning without repeatedly unpacking and packing your bags.

If you only want to visit Portugal, then riverboats offer journeys specifically designed for sailing the Douro River.

They don’t feature as many amenities as the big cruise lines, but you can be sure you’ll experience the same scenic views.

The boats also feature bars, lounges and dining areas, comfortable and even luxurious cabins, as well as the friendly and knowledgeable crew.

Take a trip down the Douro River with bePortugal’s tips .

A very pleasant 8 day experience but really more like a five day cruise. The cruise information was incomplete, leaving out interesting opportunities along the way (Port museums and prehistoric rock art,) most particularly an excursion to Salamanca, which turned out to be a highlight for us. The food was good but not as interesting as Portuguese restaurants in Porto or even at home in Canada.

River cruises in portugal reviews.

The 8 day cruise on the Duoro from Porto to Salamanca return was one of the most memorable travel experiences for me. Although there were only 7 English speaking guests (in which my partner and 1 were included) amongst mainly French guests , we never felt excluded in any way. The Purser Mike and the Guest coordinator Susannah(? with the lovely long curly hair) went over and beyond our expectations in making us feel welcome and included. All announcements were made in French and English and we never felt that the information relayed was lacking.. It was the same with all the other staff and crew members right down to the deckhands who worked very hard to give us a most enjoyable experience. Nothing was too much for them and they went over and beyond to ensure we got everything we requested . Foodwise it was 5 star cuisine for lunch and dinner each day- mostly French-exquisitely presented with satisfyingly adequate portions and delicious at all times. Complimentary Cocktails and wines were available all day (unlike other cruise companies) . Coffee, tea , refreshments sparkling and still water were also on tap 24/7.The breakfast buffet was more than adequate although it tended to be monotonous . In saying this it still fulfilled its purpose for us. The entertainment on board was also of a high standard esp the Flamenco dancing . There were also other activities like quizes, aline dancing lesson , keepfit session , which appeared to be enjoyed by all who participated. The tours were well organised and we had excellent guides who were professional and informative. I have been on a river cruise with another reputable company in the past but the experience with Croisi Europe far surpassed my expectations. The quality and value for money was outstanding and i will not hesitate to sail with them again.

Straddling seven hills, hugging the banks of the River Tagus — and crowned by the storybook castle of São Jorge — Lisbon, Portugal is a visually stunning place to visit, and arriving by sea is doing it right! The nation’s hundreds of years of nautical heritage is concentrated in Lisbon, and the riverside Belém district is where Portuguese navigators like Magellan and Vasco da Gama would begin their journeys. With glorious year-round weather, century-old cities, miles of stunning coastline and yes, fantastic wine, if portugal is not on your destination bucket list, then it should be..

Swashbuckling and romantic, Portugal is a bit like stepping into a fairy tale: medieval castles, rocky hills and green meadows are all the norm - although we cannot guarantee any damsels in distress or knights in shining armour! Adding a further touch of mystique is the Douro River Valley, so lovely that many locals consider it enchanted as well as enchanting. Wander the lovely vineyards, sample the country’s eponymous wine and admire the stupendous scenery that warrants its UNESCO World Heritage status. Bookended by Roman, Visigoth and Moorish history, and underscored by fado rhythms and superb gastronomy (pasteis de nata anyone?) allow yourself the luxury of exploring this award-winning country and its islands with Silversea.

Intimate Ships

Intimate Ships

Silversea has just four ships in our fleet of nine (soon to be ten) that cruise to Portugal, making the most of the miles of craggy coastline. Our ships are among the smallest in the business, no other cruise line can simply compete! At a maximum of 364 suites onboard, we ensure that your home away from home experience begins as soon as you step onboard. Think guaranteed cosy comforts, from quiet little nooks to haute cuisine, we ensure that travelling with Silversea is a once experienced never forgotten experience. The small size of our ships allows us to visit even the most off the beaten track ports, so wherever you want to go, you can get there with Silversea.

Luxury Oceanview Suites

Luxury Oceanview Suites

Spacious, sophisticated and internationally recognised as being the gold standard of cruising, our luxury ocean view suites really are the epitome of elegance. Personalised Service

Personalised Service

Let us show you how much we care. Every suite, regardless of category, receives attention from a personal butler to make your holiday a once in a lifetime experience. So, let us take care of you, after all … you’re worth it!

All-Inclusive Cruises

All-Inclusive Cruises

All-inclusive means many things to many people, so let’s just clear up any confusion right now. When we say all-inclusive, that’s exactly what we mean. From the Azores to the Algarve, you’ll be secure in the knowledge that your needs have already been taken care of. These include fine food and wine (including premium brands), taxes, fees, evening entertainment, keep-fit classes, gratuities … you name it! Some suite categories even have business class flights and transfers as well, so when we say all-inclusive, we really mean it.

Gourmet Cuisine

Gourmet Cuisine

Portugal may have given chiles to Asia, brought tea to England, and told the Japanese about tempura, but the country’s gastronomic heritage is still a bit of a mystery – bar the ubiquitous bacalhau and pastéis de nata. A luxury cruise to Portugal will help you enjoy all the country's lovely recipes with our destination-focused dishes and cocktails aboard. Lovers of international fare are not forgotten either: expect yummy Italian specialities in our famous La Terrazza, traditional classics in Atlantide or for those travelling on Silver Spirit, Asian-fusion and Japanese specialities in Indochine and Sheisin. Bom apetite!

Portugal

Portugal Inviting and timeless

Bem-vindo! This hearty welcome envelopes you as you embark on a cruise down the Douro River Valley, noted by UNESCO for its 2,000 years of wine-making and its “cultural landscape of outstanding beauty.” As the only place in the world that can legally produce port wine, the region abounds with wine-producing farms called quintas offering private tastings. Porto is synonymous with port wine but also offers visitors awe-inspiring architecture while other ports of call along the river boast castles and monasteries.

Portugal

There are so many ways to embrace the enchanting towns tucked along the Douro River. Feel the centuries unfold as Porto’s medieval alleys snake through UNESCO-designated neighborhoods enclosed by 14th-century walls. Head off the beaten path and explore Castelo Rodrigo whose brooding 13th-century remains continue to stand watch over the village. Witness the astonishing prehistoric carvings etched into Côa Valley’s Archaeological Park walls. Marvel at Lisbon’s Jeronimos Monastery, a UNESCO-recognized site of Moorish and Gothic designs with imposing spires, carvings, tombs, and ornate arches.

Portugal

Portugal may share a border with Spain but their cuisines are each distinctly their own. While it’s true that many of their menus have a lot in common—fresh, seasonal ingredients and similar dishes like Portugal’s arroz de pato and Spain’s paella , their use of spices sets them apart. Portuguese cooks favor hot chili peppers called piri piri and, with 1,115 miles of Atlantic coastline, seafood is the star on most menus. Bacalhau , or cod, is a particular favorite, and the Portuguese have invented hundreds of different ways to prepare it, from baking it in cream sauce to frying it into delicious bolinhas (aka “marbles”).

Portugal

The Douro Valley is Portugal’s most beloved wine trail. A mecca for wine aficionados, you’ll be treated to tastings of red and sparkling wines and, of course, port. We visit traditional quintas that offer an authentic taste of this world-renowned elixir. Drink in its history in the quaint village of Barca D’Aliva with a tour and tasting at a boutique winery that’s the oldest quinta in the Douro River Valley, or set out on a vineyard hike through the hills in pretty Pinhão to a family-owned quinta where Port samples await.

Portugal

Follow the Douro River through Portugal to cruise past quaint villages and acres of shore-hugging vineyards gently kissed by the sun. The Douro River Valley is UNESCO-designated for its “outstanding beauty,” which comes as no surprise if you spend any time sailing through the steeply terraced mountains rising from the river banks. Grape vines, silver-green olive leaves, and almond orchards are perfectly arrayed to catch the sunlight, promising a flavor and bounty unique to this corner of the world.

TRAVEL TIPS

When to go: We sail all of our Portugal-Spain cruises between April and November. In spring and summer, the vineyards that adorn the Douro River Valley come alive in graduated shades of green while a joyous riot of red and gold colors greet you in the fall.

How to pack: We suggest comfortable, sporty, smart-casual daywear both onshore and onboard. Depending on your travel season, the weather can range from cool to quite hot. Check the weather before you go and pack accordingly. Layering clothing items is always your best bet, allowing you to adjust to most temperatures. Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket (preferably hooded) in case of rain, though we will also have umbrellas onboard. You may participate in a significant amount of walking over uneven terrain during your time ashore, so please bring comfortable walking shoes with good ankle support. Sturdy sandals are another good option.

Luxury Cruises to Portugal

Portugal cruises will offer you an insight into its enchanting culture. Indulge in the country’s robust cuisine that celebrates the riches of the ocean and its lush, rolling countryside, not to mention the crisp whites, fruity reds, and famous port wine. Marvel at fairytale castles, lounge on endless sandy beaches, explore colorful markets, and experience ancient musical traditions. Most importantly, connect with the people, who are as warm and welcoming as the sunny climate.

Lisbon, the hilly capital, has wonderful architecture, a romantic old quarter, superb museums, and a thriving culinary scene. In the north, the glorious old city of Porto is a gateway to the riches of the Douro Valley, where port wine vineyards snake along steep hillsides and ornate palaces doze in the sunshine amid sprawling wine estates. The rugged Atlantic island of Madeira has its own charms, not least a beautifully preserved old city, Funchal, and some of the finest coastal walking in Europe. You may also call at the remote Azores, where you can explore dramatic volcanic scenery around Ponta Delgada, or join a whale-watching excursion. Sail to Portugal in luxury on a European cruise with Celebrity Cruises.

Portugal Cruise Highlights

Wine regions.

A cruise to Portugal will take you to some of the world’s most famous wine regions. From the port of Leixoes, you can visit the wild beauty of the Douro Valley, where sinuous vineyards and silvery olive groves line the river banks. Taste vintage ports, as well as the celebrated Mateus Rosé. From Lisbon, explore the lush countryside of the south to sample floral Moscatel wines. Madeira, meanwhile, produces its own fortified wines from grapes ripened in the Atlantic sunshine.

Historic Architecture

Exquisite castles and rugged fortifications are dotted all over Portugal. Don’t miss the 11th-century ramparts of the Castelo de São Jorge that snake across the hills of Lisbon and its stupendous views over the city’s terracotta rooftops. Visit the Torre de Belem to admire the intricate Manueline styling on this monument to the great explorers. And while the 19th-century turreted, red and yellow Pena Palace near Sintra is relatively modern, it’s a vision straight from a fairytale.

Experience the musical heritage of Portugal with a Fado performance. Fado is a uniquely Portuguese style of music that combines melodic notes from a mandolin or guitar with a melancholy tone and lyric, telling stories of life, love, and loss. It’s hauntingly beautiful to listen to and is especially prevalent in the intimate fado bars of the ancient Alfama District of Lisbon.

Crew member missing at sea during 120-day round-the-world cruise as searches continue

Ambassador Cruise Line's Ambience ship was making its final journey on the 120-day cruise from Lisbon, Portugal, back to the UK when the crew member was reported missing

Ambience had initially turned back to retrace her route

  • 08:01, 4 May 2024

A member of staff aboard a cruise ship that was on a 120-day voyage around the world is missing at sea.

Ambassador Cruise Line's Ambience ship was heading from Lisbon, Portugal, back to the UK in its final journey of the 120-day trip when the crew member was reported missing.

The British cruise line said in a statement that the ship had initially turned back to "retrace her route to the ship's position when the crew member was last seen". However, it has since been "released by coastguard authorities from the search" and is "continuing on her original course back to the UK".

According to the statement, the crew member, who was from India, was reported missing "shortly after breakfast" this morning while the ship was off Cape Finisterre, on the west coast of Spain.

Thorough ship-wide searches are said to have been conducted for the person, who has not yet been named, and the local coastguard was informed.

The ship, which can carry 1,400 guests at a time, departed from Tilbury in Essex on January 6 and is set to return to the port on Sunday. Ambassador confirmed it will have a delayed arrival in the evening, despite initial plans to get back for 9am. All events to mark its return have since been cancelled.

"Our immediate priority is to provide full support to all crew members closely affected by this incident," Ambassador said.

The statement continued: "Guests onboard have been kept informed throughout the day and have been advised of recent developments. Ambassador remains committed to the safety and wellbeing of all our crew and guests. We are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of our colleague at this difficult time."

Ambience, which launched for the first time in April last year, with a short cruise to Hamburg, Germany, followed by a trip to Norway.

It makes up part of the Ambassador cruise line operating from eight different ports in the United Kingdom . The line travels to the British Isles, the Baltics, Scandinavia, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, as well as Cuna and the Caribbean.

Crew member goes missing at sea during around the world cruise ahead of return to UK

A crew member has been reported missing at sea on an around the world cruise.

The crew members went missing from the Ambassador Cruise Line’s Ambassador ship.

The massive 1,400 guest cruise ship was making its way back from Lisbon , Portugal , to the UK, when one crew member was reported missing, according to Sky News.

Ambience had turned back to ‘retrace her route to the ship’s position when the crew member was last seen,’ the outlet said citing a statement from the British cruise line.

But the ship has since been ‘released by coastguard authorities from the search’ and it is making its ‘original course back to the UK,’ the company said.

The missing crew member is reportedly from India and they are thought to have gone missing ‘shortly after breakfast’ on Friday when the cruise was off Cape Finisterre on the Spanish coast, the statement said.

A thorough ship-wide searchers were carried out for the missing person, who has not been named, Sky News said.

The local coastguard was also informed.

Ambassador told the outlet in a statement: ‘Our immediate priority is to provide full support to all crew members closely affected by this incident.

‘Guests onboard have been kept informed throughout the day and have been advised of recent developments.

‘Ambassador remains committed to the safety and wellbeing of all our crew and guests. We are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of our colleague at this difficult time.’

The cruise ship set off for the 120-day voyage on January 6 from Tilbury, Essex.

It was scheduled to arrive in the UK at 9am on Sunday, but it will be delayed until the evening, the UK-based company said.
