We the People , developed by Crystal Bridges, presents the founding documents of the United States in conversation with works of art by influential historical and contemporary artists that provide diverse American perspectives on the nation’s founding principles. Original prints of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the proposed Bill of Rights, and the Articles of Confederation can be viewed in depth. Constitutional themes of equality, freedom, and justice are explored in twentieth-century works by Jacob Lawrence and Gordon Parks, among others, while living artists such as Roger Shimomura, Luis C. Garza, and Shelley Niro address past and present struggles for equality.

Highlights of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas

There’s a lot to see during a visit to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. Check out this list of not to miss highlights!

The Building

The building itself is as unique as the art inside.  Enjoy the contrast of hard concrete against warm, rich wood and shimmering glass…all nestled over a rippling stream.

Main Collection

The museum’s main collection, which includes a diverse selection of American art from classic to contemporary, is free to visit.  Though, during these times of COVID, you’ll need a (free) timed ticket to enter.

Special Exhibits

The museum hosts regular special exhibits.  When I visited, an exhibit of Ansel Adam’s photography was on display.  While most of these special exhibits are not included in your free ticket, they’re reasonably priced and worth a look. You can find a schedule of upcoming special exhibits here .

Infinity Room

Crystal Bridges is home to one of Yayoi Kusama’s mirrored infinity rooms:  My Heart is Dancing into the Universe.  While there is a fee to enter, it is minimal ($1).  Though there are strict guidelines for visiting and only a certain number of tickets are available per day.  For a sneak peak, you can preview the room here .

Frank Lloyd Wright House

Originally located in New Jersey, the Bachman-Wilson house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright was moved to Crystal Bridges due to risks of flooding.  You can purchase tickets to tour the home during your visit to Crystal Bridges.

Sculpture Trails

Crystal Bridges has over 4 miles of trails winding through the museum’s grounds for walking (dogs welcome!) and biking.  You’ll find lots of natural beauty as well as a wide variety of sculptures along the way. Find information about all the different trails here .

A unique experience, The Way of Color plays with colors and light at the rising and setting of the sun each day.

The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The girl on the picture-light blue bag-ask for 100 Rubles for show her the QR Code while I had the Booking and PIN number cause she must see the vessel name-Didn’t say nothing and after she said board any vessel. The traffic is quite heavy so it is a bit slow but there is not a lot they can do about it. We only did the red route. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. Paul J. Gelinas Student Wins Brookhaven Lab's Bridge Building Contest

Students with top two strongest bridges qualify for international competition.

UPTON, N.Y. — Amanda Liang, a ninth grader from Paul J. Gelinas Junior High School, won first place at the 45th annual Bridge Building Competition hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory on April 3.  

The competition shows students in grades nine through 12 what it’s like to be an engineer as they attempt to design a strong bridge out of only basswood and glue with a set of challenging specifications in mind. Their structures were put to the test under a crushing machine that slowly added more and more weight from above until the bridges broke or bent more than one inch.

The event is organized by Brookhaven Lab’s Office of Educational Programs (OEP) to advance its mission to cultivate the next generation of STEM professionals.

“I want you to imagine your future selves as professional engineers and you’re contributing something important to society,” Bernadette Uzzi, OEP’s manager for K-12 programs told students at the start of the competition. “Perhaps you’re designing a bridge, and you have to continually refine the structure to adapt to our ever-changing world, or maybe you’re here at Brookhaven involved in constructing our new Electron-Ion Collider , which is a ground-breaking machine that will unravel the mysteries of nature’s strongest force. Regardless of your future career plans, today you are engineering students and you’re part of Brookhaven’s journey.”

Uzzi also reflected on the recent bridge collapse in Baltimore: “I’m reminded why it’s so important to give students real-world, relevant experiential learning experiences like this event.”

This year, students from 14 schools around Long Island submitted 240 bridges — 193 of which met all qualifications for testing such as using a symmetrical design and weighing under 25 grams.

Bridges are ranked based on efficiency scores that are calculated from the load the bridge supports divided by the mass of the bridge — all in grams.

Liang’s design earned the top spot with an efficiency of 3,441.43.

“I looked at a bunch of old national bridges and I took a lot of inspiration from them,” Liang said, adding later, “I was really excited especially because it was my first year. I wasn’t sure how it was going to go. I didn't expect this.”

Alexander Song and Daniel Liang, both juniors from Ward Melville High School, took second place and third place with efficiencies of 2,536.142 and 2,112.446, respectively.

The top two winners in Brookhaven's regional competition qualify to compete in the International Bridge Contest on April 27, 2024, in New Philadelphia, Ohio.

Competition judges also issued an award for aesthetic bridge design to Julia Pincott, a senior at John Glenn High School.

Throughout the bridge testing day, students had the chance to meet engineers from across the Lab, including longtime contest volunteers and Jordanna Kendrot, a safety engineer at the DOE-Brookhaven Site Office. Kendrot shared how in her own path to becoming a researcher, she found it was important to expand her studies beyond only engineering courses.

“It’s really about broadening your horizons and questioning the norms in engineering that will help us keep moving forward,” Kendrot said.

Amid all the bridge crushing, competition organizers tossed Brookhaven Lab and science trivia questions to students, who had a chance to win Lab merchandise for their correct answers.

Competitors tested their engineering skills in an additional STEM challenge to construct a miniature floating table. Students were also treated to a tour of the National Synchrotron Light Source II, a DOE Office of Science user facility that creates light beams 10 billion times brighter than the sun.

“This year’s bridge contest was a new experience for everyone,” STEM educator and event co-coordinator Theresa Grimaldi said. “It was the first time OEP organized this contest to be during school hours and it was such a pleasure to have the students here for the whole day, getting to know the engineers and touring the site.”
