Crystal Cruises has been offering luxury cruise vacations since 1990. This all-inclusive cruise line doesn’t have a large fleet, but what they do have focuses on total luxury and intimate, small ship sailings.

With Crystal Cruises you won’t find mega-ships like Royal Caribbean or discount party ships like Carnival . What you will find are luxury ocean and river ships along with a yacht and an expedition ship.

Let’s explore what makes Crystal Cruises a unique experience.

Parent Company: Genting Hong Kong

Crystal Cruises segues into “All Inclusive” luxury

Good news for all-inclusive luxury cruise fans; after a year of planning, Crystal Cruises has now officially begun its transition to an all-quality “All Inclusive.”

Launched with the start of Crystal Symphony’s Miami to Lisbon Trans-Atlantic, guests can now enjoy a generous and impressive selection of complimentary fine wines and premium spirits throughout the ship, as well as open bar service in all lounges, and pre-paid gratuities for all housekeeping, butler, bar and dining staff. Crystal Serenity follows suit with her spring Trans-Atlantic sailing on May 8.

Butler-pouring-champagne Crystal Cruises

To satisfy the most discerning of palettes, Crystal’s gratis “well” liquors offer superior brands, such as  Grey Goose, Maker’s Mark, Macallan Select, Hennessy V.S.O.P.,  and  Herradura Silver .

Wines and champagnes include higher-end vintages from both boutique makers and big-name wineries, including  Beringer Napa Valley Chardonnay, St. Michael-Eppan Sauvignon Blanc Lahn, Edge Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2008, Banfi Chianti Classico Riserva, Castello di Bolgheri Varvara, Chateau Macquin St. Emilion,  and  Jacquart Brut Mosaique, Reims, France.

Dinner restaurants offer recommended pairings nightly, and sommeliers certified by the Court of Master Sommeliers remain on hand to assist with wine selections. There is no corkage fee on board if one wishes to enjoy wine purchased ashore.

An optional Connoisseur menu features award-winning, renowned and/or rare vintages, select single malt whiskeys and other aged spirits at reasonable in-store prices, as opposed to traditional upscale restaurant and hotel rates. Vintage Room experiences further tap into Crystal’s extensive wine cellar. Silver and Gold Connoisseur Packages of four and six fine wines, respectively, are also available for on-board gifts.

Carrie Finley-Bajak

Orange county, ca, cruiseclout score: 20.0, crystal serenity: modern, stylish luxury cruising.

Think of Crystal Serenity as a floating Four Seasons Resort. Discerning travelers longing for comfort, enrichment, high-touch service and contemporary surroundings will find all of that and more on this gorgeous high-end ship, the largest ultra-luxury vessel at sea.

  • A festive pre-Christmas cruise on Crystal Serenity

When it sailed for Crystal Cruises, the ship already had one of the highest space-to-passenger ratios at sea with a capacity of 1,070 passengers. Now under the new ownership of Abercrombie & Kent, which bought the company during bankruptcy proceedings and rebranded it as simply Crystal , the high-end ship has reduced the max number of guests to 740. And check it out: That gives Crystal Serenity the highest passenger space ratio at sea – a crazy-high 1-to-93.1, meaning each guest has about 93 square feet. That means you can roam its 13 decks without ever feeling crowded.

While the money people figured out the finances, the ship underwent refurbishment in Trieste, Italy, in July 2022 and re-entered service a year later, sporting several upgrades. Select guest rooms and suites were revamped and the ship was given a fresh design incorporating a palette of neutral shades. Other touches include a full-sized paddle tennis and pickleball court and a revamped fitness center.

Serenity's expansive itineraries are among the most drool-worthy at sea: Choose from cruises to the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Asia and South Pacific. Voyages last anywhere from seven days to a few months.

Who will like sailing on Crystal Serenity

Love style, comfort, gracious service and space to wander? Passengers seeking an all-inclusive luxury cruise experience need look no further than Crystal Serenity. This ship experience is a great choice for well-traveled individuals who value quality. No expense has been spared when it comes to the luxury touches discerning travelers are looking for. From the galley, the best ingredients that can be sourced are used in the restaurants; the wine list is appealing to aficionados; top shelf liquors are used for house pours; the staterooms are appointed with 100% Egyptian cotton sheets, down pillows, plush duvets, Aveda bath products and English mohair lap blankets; and throughout the ship, you will see contemporary interiors that rival the best hotels on land.

Where Crystal Serenity sails

Destinations: Crystal Serenity sails to ports of call around the world. You can book a vacation anywhere from five to 115 days. The ship offers a delectable selection of itineraries to such destinations as Tahiti, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, South Korea, Japan, Canada and many countries in between, such as a 31-night Grand Journey from Arabia to the Mediterranean. Most passengers will choose a cruise of shorter duration to focus on one region of the world.

About Ratings & awards

Dining on Crystal Serenity

Crystal Cruises has perfected the art of innovative, delicious dining at sea. Passengers can choose to dine in the Crystal Dining Room, at an alternative restaurant or in their stateroom or suite.

Crystal Dining Room

The menu offers an extensive selection of regionally inspired cuisine prepared in the classical French tradition. The array of tantalizing options includes “lighter fare” low-sodium, low-cholesterol and low-carb selections, plus vegetarian offerings.

New: The Crystal Dining Room offers open seating for breakfast and lunch; with their Perfect Choice Dining options for dinner. Passengers can select from Classic Main (beginning at 6:15 pm), or Classic Late (beginning at 8:30 pm). In addition, guests may choose their  Dining by Reservation option (available between 6:15 pm and 9:15 pm). Keep in mind that the actual times can vary by itinerary, so once onboard double check.

Open only for dinner, Prego offers Italian pasta, meat and fish entrees served a la carte or through a tasting menu. Its signature dishes include Scaloppine Di Vitello Servite Con Capelli D’angelo and Linguine Con Aragosta E Zucchini. The mushroom soup is a crowd favorite.

The Nobu Sushi Trio doesn't make you choose: Sample several types of sushi while dining on the Crystal Serenity.

Silk Road & The Sushi Bar

Passengers who love sushi and creative twists on Asian cuisine will flock to the stylish Silk Road and its fabulous, diminutive sushi bar, located at the restaurant's entrance. The kitchen, set up by world-renowned master chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa, features Nobu-trained chefs preparing classically styled Japanese foods with distinct Peruvian and European influences. Highlights include salmon tartar, Tiradito Nobu-style and Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeño, Lobster with Truffle-Yuzu Sauce, Grilled Wagyu Beef Rib-Eye with Wasabi Pepper Sauce, and the signature dessert, which is a Bento Box filled with Chocolate Soufflé Cake with Shiso Syrup and Sesame Ice Cream.

The Vintage Room

Foodies who want an intimate experience will like the Vintage Room with its wine- and champagne-themed dinners in a wine cellar setting. Expect to wine and dine while tasting and discussing some of the best wines on the ship. Ask the head sommelier to make reservations.

Other choices

Other choices include Tastes , a casual eatery near the Neptune Pool that's a good casual dinner option with a new global-inspired evening menu (it's closed on formal evenings though); The Bistro , an evening café for small bites, tapas, desserts and snacks, and the poolside Trident Grill and Lido Cafe .

Book ahead for an alternative restaurant

All guests can enjoy one complimentary meal at Prego and Silk Road and The Sushi Bar at least once during their cruise. Because these venues are so popular, make sure to inquire in advance with your Cruiseable travel professional or outside travel agent or make it a priority to secure a reservation as soon as you board the ship.

All-inclusive pricing — goodbye, surcharges!

Now that Crystal Cruises has adopted an all-inclusive cruise fare, that means guests no longer pay extra for wine, cocktails, soda, bottled water or specialty coffees. It also means gratuities are included in the cruise fare, which should help you plan your budget. Note that you'll still pay extra if you choose to dine more than once at one of the specialty restaurants.

Renewed, refreshed: Little touches that matter

The Serenity's makeover included a full remodel of its Crystal Penthouses, the coveted top accommodations on board. And you have to love the little touches throughout, from the Wedgwood bone china teacups to the Riedel leaded crystal wine glasses to the Frette linens adorning the dining tables.

Entertainment

Crystal offers a wide range of entertainment options from large-scale productions featuring shows from Broadway and Britain's West End, as well as performances from singers, dancers and musicians playing classical and contemporary music. In addition, there are celebrity speakers and headline magicians from Crystal's Magic Castle at Sea.

You'll get a kick out of old-school Broadway-style shows on a Crystal cruise.

Some 85 percent of all staterooms come with balconies, compared to 65 percent of the rooms on sister ship Crystal Symphony. All rooms come with seating areas, 100% Egyptian cotton linens, flat-screen satellite TV, minibar,  bathroom with bathtub and double sink and wi-fi access — for a fee (drat!). Guests staying in a penthouse room have access to extras like Jacuzzis, nightly hors' d'oeuvres and personal butler service.

Crystal Serenity's entry-level cabin is called a deluxe stateroom with large picture window, measuring 226 square feet. The deluxe stateroom with veranda is 269 square feet and its penthouses range from 403 to 1,345 square feet. Penthouse guests get private Jacuzzis, nightly hors d'oeuvre and personal butler service.

Passenger makeup

Crystal Serenity attracts a friendly, sophisticated, uppercrust crowd with a majority age 50 and older. Depending on the itinerary, the passenger mix is often 85 percent North American (many from California) and 15 percent other nationalities. The crew and staff speaks English.

Final word

Crystal Cruises has done a lot of evolving to emerge on the cruise scene with a fresh new taste and feel. Most notable is the move towards a more casual shipboard environment. Put it this way, although you can still wear your long formal gowns, it is no longer required. And with the Dining by Reservation program in place, you have the flexibility to choose with whom you wish to dine as well as your dinner time (within the applicable dining hours).

Editor & community ratings

“Few cruise ship restaurants affiliated with celebrated chefs come close to Silk Road and The Sushi Bar. Most superstar chefs with restaurants worldwide can’t micro-manage each venue’s quality. But Japanese-born Nobu, who shot to fame with his Asian cuisine with Peruvian and European influences, makes it work.”

Crystal Cruises fleet

Crystal serenity, crystal symphony, review of crystal cruises.

Crystal Cruises (1988-founded/1990-launched/2023-relaunched) is a top-luxury travel brand and a premium passenger shipping company. It currently operates only ocean voyages with two smaller-sized vessels (full-scale refurbished in 2023) with all-inclusive travel package deals. Both Crystal ships (Serenity and Symphony) are top-ranked in numerous categories and provide 5-star hotel amenities and superior services, as well as an intimate cruising experience marked by elegance and perfection in every detail.

New Crystal Cruises (2022-reestablished company)

After being acquired by Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group in 2022, the company was officially relaunched in February 2023 as just "Crystal", opening bookings for past guests on February 13th, and for the general public on February 22nd. The relaunched cruise company started with the maiden voyages of its (for now only) two ships - Crystal Serenity (debut on July 31st) and Crystal Symphony (debut on September 1st).

Until 2022, the company's chief officers were Tom Wolber (President and CEO) and Karl Muhlberger (COO / Chief Operating Officer). On July 24, 2020, the company celebrated its 30th anniversary. In June 2022, the company was quired by Abercrombie & Kent Ltd.

In July 2022, to manage the new company were appointed Jack Anderson (President) and Bernie Leipold (Senior VP of Hotel Operations). In November, the A&K Travel Group's management team joined Andrew Burrett (Group CFO/Chief Financial Officer), Fernando Delgado Vintimilla (CPO/Chief Product Officer), Camille Drevillon (Chief of Staff), Martin Froggatt (Chief Destination Officer), Kerry Golds (Chief Tour Operating Officer), Fabio Agostini (CIO/Chief Information Officer), Kim Robins Berman (Chief Legal & People Officer). In December were appointed Jacqueline Barney (Senior VP of Global Marketing), Spyros Almpertis (Director of Port Operations), Roberto Fazi (Senior VP of Marine Operations) and Julio Solvas  (Finance Director).

In August 2022 were hired Matias Lira (as Senior VP) and Brandon Townsley (as VP of Sales and Trade Partnerships).

In September 2022 were hired Monique Ross (as Director of Strategic & National Accounts/previously employed by Crystal and Seabourn ), Paul Girouard (as East North America's Regional Sales Director for USA and Canada/previously employed by Crystal and Mystic Cruises' Atlas Ocean Voyages ), Melissa Nightingale (as West North America's Regional Sales Director for USA and Canada/previously employed by Crystal) and Jeff Herzfeld) and Jeff Herzfeld (as Director of Reservations, Sales Support & Guest Relations/previously employed by MSC and Virgin Voyages ).

In November 2022, A&K Travel Group appointed Jack Anderson as Crystal Cruises' President.

In December 2022 were rehired four veteran Captains - Birger Vorland (with the company since 2003), Nenad Willheim (with Crystal since 2006), Tonci Hladilo (with Crystal since 2006) and Vincent Taillard (former Silversea employee).

In February 2023 were rehired four veteran Hotel Directors - Hubert Buelacher and Scott Peterson (Crystal Serenity) and Herbert Jaeger and Josef Matt (Crystal Symphony). In March 2023 was contracted GMT-Global Marine Travel (2001-founded/London UK-based, part of the V.Group Marine Services Division) to provide access to specially negotiated net-fare airline contracts (including for crew members) allowing Crystal Cruises to create more affordable "flight+cruise" packages as well as additional itinerary planning services/flight charter options.

In April 2023 were rehired two veteran Cruise Directors - Rick Spath (for Crystal Serenity/with the company since 2004) and Russ Grieve (for Crystal Symphony/with the company since 2018).

In June 2023 was announced that Crystal has retained ~80% of the staff/crew who served the brand under the previous ownership.

Currently, both travel companies "Crystal Cruises Inc" and "Abercrombie & Kent Ltd" (now sister-brands) are managed by Cristina Levis (A&K Travel Group's CEO).

Abercrombie & Kent company's management team includes Geoffrey JW Kent (President, CEO, Co-Chairman), Ronald Veno (Vice President), Brett Fichte (CFO-Chief Financial Officer), Stephanie Witmer (VP of Finance), Ann Epting (Senior VP Product Development), Robin Warne (Senior VP Finance), David Vass (Senior VP Global Cruise Business and Operations), Gillian larkin (Senior VP Consortia Relations), Stefanie Schmudde (VP Product Development and Operations), Marett Taylor (VP Sales), Jennifer Leska (VP Tour Sales), Courtney Reagan (VP Marketing), Keith Sproule and Norma Cooke (Executive Directors of A&K Philanthropy), Stephanie Papaioannou (VP Private Travel and Guest Relations), Scot Anderson (VP IT), Linda Wischmeyer (VP Private Jet Division).

Geoffrey Kent is A&K's Founder, as well as Co-Chairman of A&K Travel Group and Crystal Cruises Inc.

Crystal River Cruises was a division of the old Crystal Cruises (managing 4x newbuild riverboats ) and a separate branch offering fully all-inclusive deals. The product was marked by gourmet dining, expert enrichment, high-class entertainment, top-luxury amenities and impeccable service. In each port along the itinerary were offered culture-themed tours and excursions. In some of the ports, the river ships had overnight stays allowing tourists to enjoy high-class gourmet dining experiences at Michelin-starred restaurants ashore and also exclusive evening events and entertainment on board.

In January 2016, Genting bought the remaining 30% stocks of Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven . The deal also included ~50% stake in the shipbuilder's real estate subsidiary company "Investitions und Verwaltungs". The acquisition plans were first announced on September 18, 2015.

The announcement said that Star Cruises together with the German companies Petram Beteiligungs, Ehlerding Beteiligungs, and BLG Logistics Group entered into a stock purchase agreement that allows GHK to acquire a majority stake in Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven GmbH. Before the agreement's announcement, Genting signed a letter of intent with the shipbuilding company for Crystal's new polar-class ships scheduled for deliveries in 2018-Q4 (later pushed back to 2019).

  • To start operations, Crystal River Cruises purchased an existing riverboat that was fully refurbished and renamed "Crystal Mozart" (launched in July 2016). Additionally were ordered 4 new luxury "river yachts" (by Lloyd Werft) to be launched in 2017. Crystal Mozart is currently Europe's largest river ship, except, of course, the old-design Russian ships on Volga River. Mozart has capacity 160 passengers, large accommodations (sized 19-80 m2 / 200-860 ft2), multiple restaurants, an indoor swimming pool.
  • In July 2016, Crystal River launched fleet's first boat Crystal Mozart . The newbuilds debuted in 2017 ( Crystal Bach , Crystal Mahler ) and in 2018 ( Crystal Debussy , Crystal Ravel ).
  • In October 2016, ALMACO Group (specializing in the construction of offshore accommodations, staterooms, newbuilding galleys) won its ever first river cruise ship contract to supply galley/kitchen areas and suites for the 4 new "river yachts". The contract included 220 top-luxury cruise suites, corresponding hallways and corridors, turnkey delivery of the ship's galleys and pantries (equipment and lining). Earlier in 2016, ALMACO refurbished the crew cabins and catering areas of Crystal Mozart.
  • Crystal Bach and Crystal Mahler cruised on Main, Danube and Rhine rivers. Crystal Ravel and Crystal Debussy cruised in France - on Dordogne, Garonne, Gironde and Seine rivers. Crystal Mozart cruised only on Danube due to its size.

Crystal riverboats were Malta- flagged and provided dedicated (per cabin) butler service, Egyptian cotton linens, King-size double beds facing toward French Balcony windows, full-length mirrors, walk-in closets, ETRO robes and slippers, Nespresso machines, wall-mounted TVs.

Onboard dining options included Waterside Restaurant (dining room/open-seating), Vintage Room (wine bar / private dinner/party venue), Palm Court (show lounge), Cove Bar, Bistro (casual cafe). The river yachts have Fitness Center, full-service Spa, indoor infinity pool (resistance swimming pool), top-deck Vista Bar & Grill.

Onboard dining menus were based on food prepared with the freshest, locally sourced ingredients and cruise itinerary-based traditional specialties - fresh seafood and fish (Holland), seasonal fruits and vegetables (Holland, Germany), meat and poultry (Austrian Alps and Bavarian farms), local draught and craft beers, regional wines and cheeses. Specialty coffees and teas were served complimentary by the Vienna Austria-based company Julius Meinl.

Crystal YACHT Cruises

In March 2016, Crystal revealed plans to build the world's first purpose-built polar class megayacht - Crystal Endeavor . The brand's first-ever expedition ship was initially planned to enter service in August 2018 but due to shipyard issues, the construction was delayed and the delivery was rescheduled for 2021. The superyacht has max passenger capacity 200 and 100 passenger suites.

The yacht as technology features 8 electric amphibious Zodiacs/RIBs, two 7-person minisubmarines, 2 helicopters, 2 helipads. It also offers complimentary jet skis, sea kayaks, wave runners, paddleboards, fishing facilities, snorkeling, and scuba diving equipment.

The yacht is fitted with offshore dynamic positioning technology and computer-controlled navigation systems allowing it to automatically maintain position using its own propulsion (thrusters and propellers). This allows the vessel to stay above coral reefs without using anchors, which could damage the seabed. The ship is similar to the "discovery yacht'" Scenic Eclipse (2018) built for Scenic Cruises .

Crystal Endeavor yacht cruise ship design

In November 2016, Crystal announced a yacht fleet expansion - from 1 to 3 new vessels, with scheduled deliveries in 2021 (Endeavor), 2021 (TBN1) and 2022 (TBN2). The sisterships were designed to have as "standard" the "megayacht cruising" industry's first mini-subs, helicopters and ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles).

Crystal Endeavor yacht cruise ship design

Crystal's yacht fleet had to operate in polar and coastal regions - European Arctic (during summer), migrating whales route (sailing along the coasts of Europe and the Americas), down to Antarctica (during winter). The bold decision for 3 new polar ships followed a 3-year research that found that nearly 70% of Crystal's customers are highly interested in polar expedition travel.

new DIAMOND-Class ships (2022-2025/canceled)

In January 2018, Crystal Yacht Cruises announced significant changes to the new ship design, downsizing the initial "EXCLUSIVE Class" (Genting Cruise Lines ships) and removing from the original design the top-deck private residences.

The first vessel's delivery was initially scheduled for 2018, then pushed back to 2019, and finally set for 2022.

In 2018, the EXCLUSIVE-Class design was changed to DIAMOND-Class. The vessel's size/volume was reduced (from 100,000 to 67,000 GT-tons) and the max passenger capacity was decreased by 20% (from 1000 to 800).

Staterooms included 48x "Crystal Residences" - ultra-luxury suites sized between 600-4000 ft2 (56-372 m2) each, but these were later removed from the design.

DIAMOND-Class megayachts were also with ice-classed hulls and propulsion based on 4x AzipodXO units (by ABB Marine). The gearless propulsion system comprised 1x electric drive motor (per unit) contained in a submerged pod (outside the hull). AzipodXO units are specifically designed for high ice-class navigation. ABB Azipods reduce the vessel's lifecycle costs and guarantee optimum efficiency operations. Of all 4 units per ship, 2 had power output 22 MV (each), and 2 had 19 MW (each).

The new ships had to be also fitted with the "ABB 800xA DCS" (distributed control) system, EMMA Energy Management System (historical data analysis, with a comparison to current sea conditions) and fleet management suite (fleetwide benchmarking).

Due to the COVID pandemic, Crystal suspended its ocean fleet's passenger shipping operations by canceling all voyages with pre-scheduled departures in the period March 14, 2020, through July 2021.

One of the major regions wine fans will be attracted to Azamara is their itinerary design. Although some lines repeat the same route week after week, Azamara gradually moves its ships around the globe, allowing wine enthusiasts to book a segment calling on ports in their favorite wine regions.

Wine on board: Azamara includes beverages as part of their all-inclusive pricing. They offer a selection of several varietals in almost unlimited quantities along with a high standard of liquors like Gordon’s Gin. Passengers can sip Nicholas Feuillatte Brut Champagne to their heart’s content by upgrading to the Ultimate Beverage Package priced at $23.95/day or choosing their “By the bottle” wine list.

Spectacular wine experiences: If your itinerary includes the city of Bordeaux, expect an overnight stay to explore the city and spectacular tour options like a visit to both Chateau Lynch Bages in Paulliac and Chateau Kirwan in Margaux.

You would expect a line that encourages tuxedos and kilts for men on formal nights to excel in the wine department. Cunard is the only line offering regular transatlantic service on seven-night voyages aboard Queen Mary 2.  On voyages like these, the ship is your destination, and the wines do not disappoint.

Wine on board: Cunard’s wine list offers over 480 wines from 27 countries. The Port Bar features that namesake beverage, offering vintages dating back to 1840, the year Samuel Cunard founded the company. Cunard offers classes from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) onboard in addition to wine and food pairing themed lunches. Their wine list features some of the world’s rarest bottles like Domaine Leflaive Montrachet, Penfold’s Grange and Domaine de la Romanee Conti selections.

Spectacular wine experiences: As a wine connoisseur you are familiar with the five famous first growths of Bordeaux, but have you ever tasted them side by side in a five-wine flight? Cunard offers this tasting of these famous Premier Crus at around $350.

Began an extraordinary wine journey with the Ultra-Premium Cruise Lines below and discover curated wine lists that elevate your taste buds to new heights of luxury.

Here is a line offering nine dining options. There are times you prefer a salad and rose wine alfresco. You might want champagne and canapes in your stateroom or Italian cuisine in Osteria D’Ovidio.

Wine onboard: The Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony also feature The Vintage Room, an ideal venue for food and wine pairings. The line has redefined inclusive luxury by offering wines like Jacquart champagne and Bandi Chianti Classico Reserva.

Spectacular wine experience: The Vintage room is the setting for their six-course tasting menu matched with appropriate wines ($300/head) or the Ultimate Vintage Room Dinner ($1,200/head).

Explora Journeys

Explora is MSC Cruises’ entry into the luxury cruise market. You can tell you are an honor guest as you are greeted with a welcome bottle of champagne in your suite and your choice of spirits.

Wines onboard: The thinking behind the inclusive wine list is to identify wines by varietal while featuring those varieties from undiscovered places or producers within the wine regions where the ship is sailing.

Spectacular wine experience: Every ship has at least one wine sommelier, but how many other ships have a Sake sommelier to help compliment your Asian entrée?

crystal cruises wine list

Holland America

Here is a line ideal for wine fans. Their ships have a series of specialty restaurants, ideal for the wine fan seeking to match wines with courses. Expect to find an American steakhouse, French seafood restaurant, Italian venue along with an Asian restaurant. Suitable wines are available in each venue.

Wine onboard: Holland America Line won the top spot from VIBE Vista, an industry group, for best wine program in 2020. They teamed up with James Suckling, longtime Wine Spectator editor to offer a wine list comprised of wines all rated 90+ points. These wines are at all price points.

Spectacular wine experience: In addition to an excellent wine program, Holland America also has a Whisky bar onboard. The selection is extensive and large tags are attached to each bottle eliminating the uncertainty of the cost of each whisky. They hold tutored tastings too.

Oceania has had a longstanding relationship with world famous chef, Jacques Pepin. In partnership with Wine Spectator, they have brought La Reserve, a wine sanctuary to their Marina and Riviera ships.

Wine onboard: You are expecting good wine, but it’s always a treat to discover great wines that are hard to find elsewhere. Oceania has recently introduced its Rare Wine Collection including hard to find names like Mouton Rothschild and Ornellaia.

Spectacular wine experiences: Wine enthusiasts enjoy nothing more than a leisurely served tasting menu with wines paired with each course. La Cuisine Bourgeoise is one example of what’s in store for you.

Regent Seven Seas

For a cruise line known for ships that are not too large, Regent Seven Seas features The Compass Rose, the largest specialty restaurant across their fleet. Regent maintains a partnership with Food & Wine Trails, who provide shore excursions for the gourmet traveler. If you want to visit a distillery in Ireland or a vineyard in Bordeaux, this is an ideal choice.

Wine onboard: This is the place to find an excellent selection of California wines. The complimentary wines are ones you would be proud to serve at home, like a 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape.

Spectacular Wine Experience: Wine fans know the Wine Spectator compiles an annual list of top restaurants with spectacular wine lists. The latest list includes The Compass Rose, located on the Regent Seven Seas ship Seven Seas Explorer. They have held a WS Award of Excellence since 2020.

crystal cruises wine list

Here is a line that was known for smaller ships and larger luxury before other cruise lines jumped on the bandwagon. If you have sailed with Seaborne before, you know what to expect.

Wine onboard: A substantial selection of approximately 15 whites and another 15 reds from around the world are included with your cruise fare. Nicolas Feuillate champagne is on the list too. For wine fans thinking they might need to “trade up” to find better wines, you should find favorites like Saint Emilion from Bordeaux, Provence rose and Albarino from Spain on the list.

Spectacular wine experience: Seaborne has an interesting option for lovers of fine wine. Select a package at one of three tiers ($350, $600, $850) and enjoy a 17-24% bonus.

SeaDream Yacht Club

SeaDream’s theme is “It’s yachting, not cruising.” If you want to sail on a vessel with 112 passengers max, served by 95 crew, look no further. Now combine a smaller ship with a wine-themed destination.

Wine onboard: Expect wine themed activities like a tasting menu dinner hosted by a winemaker who pairs wines with each course. Wine tasting sessions are hosted by local winery personnel.

Spectacular wine experience: The “Champagne and Caviar Splash” takes place on Caribbean voyages. Enough said.

crystal cruises wine list

Silversea ships are smaller and sail to all seven continents. Smaller ships can get into ports that larger ships cannot. Venice, Italy and Hamilton, Bermuda are examples of ports where smaller ships have an advantage,

Wine onboard: With 70 selections on the complimentary list, industry experts credit their list as the largest inclusive selection at sea.

Spectacular Wine Experience: If 70 selections is not enough, the Connoisseur list includes Vega Sicilia Unico (2005), possibly Spain’s rarest and most expensive wine. Red Burgundy is represented by Jacques Prieur Clos de Vougeot (2012) and Chateau d’Yquem (2006) is a tempting dessert wine from the Sauternes region of Bordeaux.

crystal cruises wine list

Swan Hellenic

Viking Ocean

Viking River Cruises is a household name. Building on that success, they launched a fleet of ocean-going vessels. One of the features making Viking unique is the inclusion of shore excursions. If you are traveling to a wine region, you should expect a visit to a vineyard.

Wine onboard: Viking offers complimentary house wines, beers and soft drinks with onboard lunches and dinners, plus specialty coffees and assorted hot teas that are available 24 hours a day. For those who would like to upgrade and enjoy unlimited beverages, Viking offers a Silver Spirits beverage package, which covers any drinks (excluding champagne) up to $18.00 USD, including premium wines by the glass, cocktails, all house pouring wines, champagnes, beers, liquors, well drinks, mixers/long drinks and soft drinks throughout the day for a flat fee per guest.

1 thought on “Wine Connoisseur Paradise: Navigating the Wine Personalities of Ultra-Luxury and Ultra-Premium Cruise Ships”

For a wine fan, there is plenty of choice. Several lines have spectacular wines onboard along with tasting menus. If you are traveling to ports in “wine country” it looks like they offer seriously wine themed shore excursions.

The best new cruises in the world: 2024 Hot List

By CNT Editors

Image may contain Boat Transportation Vehicle Cruise Ship and Ship

It’s inevitable: every spring when we pull together the Hot List, our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants, and cruise ships, a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of travelling the globe – to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage – it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali . We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List cruise winners for 2024.

Emerald Sakara, Emerald Cruises

Now with two oceangoing vessels joining Emerald’s more established fleet of nine river-dedicated “Star-Ships,” the decade-old cruise line is extending a brand built on unpretentious luxury to more corners of the world. Christened last August , the 100-guest superyacht, Sakara, is a near twin to Azzurra, which in 2022 ushered in a new era for Emerald by taking to the high seas. Sakara, like its sister, delightfully blurs the line between the luxury and ultra-luxury cruise categories, offering attentive service, gourmet cuisine, tasteful decor, and an eclectic slate of activities at a price point friendly to more budgets. The cherry on top with both superyachts is a slew of perks atypical of small-ship sailing, ranging from an impressively comprehensive spa to a marina platform well equipped for more fun in the sun. Despite having so much good stuff, each vessel is remarkably spacious. Getting a sense of being on a private yacht is easy like Sunday morning. Sakara is homeported in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean through at least March 2026; Azzurra, too, in addition to the Middle East, Kenya, and the Seychelles . Emerald’s river operations are based in Europe and Southeast Asia. (Note that a third ship, the Kaia, has just been announced by the cruise line; it debuts in April 2026, and, for all the early birds, it is now open for bookings.) From around £3,112. Explora I, Explora Journeys

With a showpiece lobby bar, upscale restaurants, and a sultry infinity pool, Explora Journeys' relaxed luxury-resort-at-sea vibe strikes the perfect balance on Explora I. Launched in August 2023, the all-inclusive ship is disarmingly beautiful. A sleek navy blue exterior cocoons 461 suites, all with deep balconies, walk-in closets, and marble bathrooms. There is free-flowing Champagne, 7,500 square feet of wellness space, and 18 drinking and dining venues. From Emporium Marketplace, with its decadent raw bar, to pan-Asian restaurant Sakura, the dining on Explora I is sensational. Marble & Co. Grill is an intimate steakhouse where ageing meats hang in temperature-controlled cabinets. At Anthology, the ship's only supplementary restaurant, guest chefs – such as Claude Le Tohic of San Francisco's O' by Claude Le Tohic – curate sublime tasting menus. There's more: The only Rolex boutique at sea, huge hot tubs, and a shore program that sees some land experiences developed in partnership with revered explorer Mike Horn. From around £564 per person per night. Kerry Spencer

Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International

Aboard the Icon, you can really get lost. The behemoth is just plain big, with a capacity for nearly 8,000 when combining passengers and crew across 20 decks and 250,800 gross tons. Two and a half laps around the ship’s jogging track, a particular highlight onboard, and you’ve run a mile. So one can find themselves in need of a map – forgetting your sunscreen , for example, in your cabin is a bit of a chore depending on how far you’ve made it. But the abundance of things to do is also narcotic, and you feel a bit like a lotus-eater attempting to navigate it all while keeping your head. Amid the relentless entertainment, not to be missed are the top-notch performers present everywhere, from the Olympic-level aquatics show that you can watch from the windows of the speciality seafood restaurant should seating be elusive (it often is) to the cafeteria, where crewmembers dressed as food items sing songs reminding (commanding, actually, which is fabulous) passengers to wash their hands at sinks near the entrance. If you wish to enjoy the largest waterpark at sea, by the way, do what I did not and pack a swimsuit without zippers. From around £1,818 . Charlie Hobbs

MSC Euribia, MSC Cruises

Looking at a row of cruise ships in port, you'll spot MSC Euribia right away. She's covered bow to stern by an ocean-themed mural by German artist Alex Flämig that bears the hashtag #SaveTheSeas nodding to the MSC's dedication to sustainable cruising: the Italian cruise line aims to be net-zero by 2050. MSC Euribia brings it one step closer to that goal, as it's the fleet's greenest ship yet, operating on liquified natural gas (LNG) and running advanced water and waste treatment systems onboard. But enough with the technical details – this mega-ship is packed with activities and entertainment, with 10 restaurants, 21 bars, five pools, two performance venues, and a bevvy of family-friendly amenities, like an F1 simulator, a waterpark, and a bowling alley. More adult-oriented highlights include the MSC Aurea Spa, with a thermal suite outfitted with thalassotherapy pools, a salt cave, and a snow room, as well as the Helios Wine Maker bar for wine tastings. Itineraries from around £420. Stefanie Waldek

Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Cruise Line

The second entry in Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Prima Class, Viva is like an Irish twin of older sister Prima. There’s the same stateroom count at 1,586, done in pristine and pleasing neutrals, as well as familiarly tricked-out amenities like the zippy 1,400-foot go-kart racing track that undulates over-the-top decks. Importantly, the Ocean Walk, which my colleague Mercedes Bleth adored aboard the Prima, remains. But round two afforded the premier name in large-ship cruising a chance to tweak and perfect, with an influx of seating options both in the ship’s complimentary dining hall as well as on its myriad decks. Across from the signature “zero-waste” Metropolitan Bar, where yummy drinks are whipped up from the ship’s food waste (I particularly enjoy a buttery Croissant Mai-Tai, for which hardening pastries are boiled down into sweetening syrup; the same is done with banana peels) is an interactive piece of digital art 52 feet wide that sees butterflies flit beside passersby. Breezy class all around. From around £791. Charlie Hobbs

Oceania Vista, Oceania Cruises

Vista, Oceania’s first new ship in more than a decade and the first of its Allura Class, debuted with small but mighty upgrades to its previous ships: better stabilisers for a smoother sailing experience; stronger Wi-Fi; lighting and architecture designed to make the ship’s common spaces look and feel roomier; a resort-like pool deck; and balconies in every cabin. The real star of the show, though, is the food and beverage experience – Vista’s culinary program delivers on its promise of top-quality venues you’ll want to make the rounds at. New to the lineup are Ember, a steakhouse with decor straight out of Napa Valley , and Aquamar Kitchen, serving up lighter fare that doesn’t skimp on taste. Celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, or a just-because occasion with the Cellar Masters Wine Luncheon, a five-course meal and wine pairing. And don’t miss the elaborate sea day brunch, where towers of lobster, crab, and caviar await. Of course, the ship is just one destination. This year, Vista is splitting time between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean; next year, it will venture farther into Europe with ports of call like Istanbul , Stockholm, and Klaipeda, Lithuania. Its sister ship, Allura, sets sail in 2025. From around £2,182. Madison Flager

Scenic Eclipse II, Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours

The eagerly awaited Scenic Eclipse II is the new and improved version of Scenic's first expedition vessel, Scenic Eclipse. Dubbed "discovery yachts" for their sleek look and top-tier service, the sisters are nearly identical, with most changes so subtle that most guests might not even notice them, such as the slight enlargement of the steam room in the spa. But a big difference can be found on deck 10, where a plunge pool with jets for simulated lap swimming has taken the place of two hot tubs – and there's a new Sky Bar up here. Otherwise, Scenic Eclipse II has the same beloved amenities of its sister, most notably 10 exceptional dining experiences, from a sushi bar to a French restaurant with an attached Champagne bar; a 5,920-square-foot spa; two helicopters; and a submersible. Capable of sailing all over the world, including the polar regions, Scenic Eclipse II has itineraries for every type of traveller. From around £6,025. Stefanie Waldek

Seabourn Pursuit, Seabourn Cruise Line

Pursuit is a small, “yacht-like” expedition ship with a distinct green exterior whose destinations range from Antarctica to warmer climes like the Kimberley in Australia. The decadent cabins, bigger than some standard hotel rooms, feel spacious and relaxing, complete with all the subtle touches that make you feel immediately at home. You can hang your evening attire in the walk-in closet and dry your wet swimwear – or damp Arctic expedition gear – in the built-in warming compartment; have sunrise breakfasts or sunset cocktails mixed at the in-room wet bar on your private balcony; and sleep in a plush, queen-sized bed. But what truly sets this cruise apart is the attentive and personable staff who quickly learn your name and personal preferences, providing VIP treatment throughout the journey. From around £8,729. Seven Seas Grandeur, Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Ports in the Caribbean, the Greek islands , and the Riviera might be the draw, but the all-inclusive luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises produces ships that have travellers looking forward to those days at sea, as its sixth offering, Grandeur, further proves. All of the 372 suites, which start at a roomy 307 square feet, are decorated in calming neutral blues and beige, and feature furnished balconies; most have L'Occitane bubbles for the marble tub. Quiet comfort can also be had in the Serene Spa & Wellness outdoor lounge area, following a massage on a quartz crystal bed that mimics the feel of warm sand. Cravings for a porterhouse or a vegetarian Salisbury steak can be sated by Prime 7, with other venues serving speciality pan-Asian cuisine, French fare, ample buffets, and Italian offerings. Mainstay Compass Rose has been reimagined as a light, airy space where diners breakfast under playfully elegant pillars that resemble crystal trees. Grandeur's whimsy extends to its reception area, where guests can check out Journey in Jewels, the Fabergé egg made specifically for the vessel, where it will remain for the rest of its jewelled ovoid days. The maximum number of 744 guests ensures unhurried service and uncrowded environs as you recover from a sunny day of swimming with Caribbean pigs. From around £3798. Alexandra Sanidad

Silver Nova, Silversea Cruises

A voyage on Silversea’s latest ship, Silver Nova, is one of taste and style. With expansive glass features throughout each of the 11 decks, and an ocean-facing saltwater swimming pool , the ship’s unique asymmetrical design leaves room for adults to run and play (with swank, of course). The Nova’s reimagined culinary experience, SALT (Sea and Land Taste), is the first large-scale, regional restaurant at sea, and acts as an invitation to guests to experience more than an excursion. While initially introduced on Silver Moon, the Nova’s SALT program includes SALT Lab by day: an intimate cooking class with highly acclaimed chefs and regional cuisine recipes inspired by the next destination. With one nightly seating, SALT Chef's Table offers an exclusive and creatively interactive dining experience. It’s all very intimate – as chefs showcase the art of their crafts firsthand, guests peek into a new culture and place before even disembarking. From around £2465. Jessica Chapel

An aerial of a cruise ship in a river.

Viking Aton, Viking River Cruises

In the style of all Viking ships, the Rottet Studio – designed Aton is intended for comfortable and thought-provoking exploration – just look to the book-filled shelves in the cabins, curated by London’s Heywood Hill library, and the revolving door of on-board lecturers (on my trip, an English curator spoke about the evolving depictions of Egypt in 1900s popular art). It should be no surprise that in a destination as rich and storied as Egypt ’s Nile, where the Aton is permanently based, the guides set apart what may read as a quintessential itinerary. On the Pharaohs & Pyramids journey, which takes travellers from the Valley of the Kings, where King Tut lies, to the Great Pyramid of Giza and well beyond over 12 days, esteemed Egyptologists oscillate from translating hieroglyphics on temple walls in real-time to shepherding travellers through modern night markets with endless fervour. On this ship it isn’t just what you see but how much you listen – and the team here, predominantly Egyptian, has much to say. These days, travellers crave perspective-altering experiences more than ever; get on the Aton, and you’ll get once-in-a-lifetime access (until that is, your next Aton sailing). From around £4849. Resilient Lady, Virgin Voyages

Stepping onto Resilient Lady feels a bit like heading to summer camp. The massive vessel is like a giant playground for adults, which is why it draws a fun-loving crowd. Theme night parties, a nostalgic arcade room, plenty of board games, and basketball courts are just a few of the seemingly limitless onboard activities. Compared with its sister ships, the newest Virgin Voyages addition includes upgraded onboard entertainment and exciting new ports of call like the Greek Islands, Bali, and Mumbai . Most of the shows on this specific ship are new to the line, such as Persephone, an interactive performance developed in collaboration with famed Brooklyn nightclub House of Yes, and Another Rose, an immersive dinner experience. Dining options are abundant on the ship – 20-plus to be exact – and all of them are included with every passenger ticket. Plus, you can’t miss out on a visit to the several different sauna experiences in the Thermal Suite inside the Redemption Spa. From around £1616 . Rachel Dube

World Voyager, Atlas Ocean Voyages

There are superbly comfortable spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows aplenty on World Voyager, the latest vessel from Atlas Ocean Voyages. On an Antarctica expedition, you might watch turquoise icebergs float by from the sauna or the spa’s relaxation room, with its heated loungers perfectly positioned in front of a wall of glass. Back in your cosy stateroom, Champagne and strawberries await, as do the views from a Juliet or walkout balcony. The look throughout the 100 cabins and public spaces is Scandinavian modern, thanks to blond woods, marble floors, plush carpets in geometric patterns, and curvaceous furniture draped in velvety fabrics. In the elegant dining room, the focus is on international cuisine with a farm-to-table slant – think mushroom risotto and smoked duck with chargrilled vegetables. Meanwhile, the multipage cocktail menu beckons guests to a pair of spacious lounges. Blending yacht-style elegance and boutique-resort intimacy, this is a ship where you can make new friends easily but also retreat to a favourite spot to enjoy high tea in peaceful solitude while awaiting details from the crew on the adventures that lie ahead. Compared with its sister ships, the newest Virgin Voyages addition includes upgraded onboard entertainment and exciting new ports of call like the Greek Islands, Bali, and Mumbai. Most of the shows on this specific ship are new to the line, such as Persephone, an interactive performance developed in collaboration with famed Brooklyn nightclub House of Yes, and Another Rose, an immersive dinner experience. Dining options are abundant on the ship—20-plus to be exact—and all of them are included with every passenger ticket. Plus, you can’t miss out on a visit to the several different sauna experiences in the Thermal Suite inside the Redemption Spa. From $2,000 . —Rachel Dube

World Voyager — Atlas Ocean Voyages Arrow

There are superbly comfortable spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows aplenty on World Voyager, the latest vessel from Atlas Ocean Voyages. On an Antarctica expedition, from the sauna or the spa’s relaxation room, with its heated loungers perfectly positioned in front of a wall of glass, you might watch turquoise icebergs float by. Back in your cozy stateroom, Champagne and strawberries await, as do the views from a Juliet or walkout balcony. The look throughout the 100 cabins and public spaces is Scandinavian modern, thanks to blond woods, marble floors, plush carpets in geometric patterns, and curvaceous furniture draped in velvety fabrics. In the elegant dining room, the focus is on international cuisine with a farm-to-table slant—think mushroom risotto and smoked duck with chargrilled vegetables. Meanwhile, the multipage cocktail menu beckons guests to a pair of spacious lounges. Blending yacht-style elegance and boutique-resort intimacy, this is a ship where you can make new friends easily but also retreat to a favorite spot to enjoy high tea in peaceful solitude while awaiting details from the crew on the adventures that lie ahead.
