Wild Wings Safaris

Top 10 things you probably wanted to know about tented safari camps … but were afraid to ask.

There’s something undeniably romantic about safari tents. They embody a style and era of bygone elegance that simply shouts: “authentic African safari”.

A Word of Caution: They’re not for everyone. For starters, if you’re a light sleeper, have a nervous disposition, or feel anxious about being up close to wildlife and other creatures that go ‘bump in the night’, rather opt for a robust, bricks-and-mortar style safari lodge. They are also excellent options that come in every shape, flavour and form to suit your pocket and preferences. And you’ll still enjoy an unforgettable experience!

For the more intrepid, there are some things about tented safaris that can’t be beaten:

1. Sleeping out under canvas feels closer to nature. You are more aware of the sights, sounds and scents of the bush. It’s quite something to hear lions roar, hippos grunt and hyenas whoop … as if they were just outside your window - which they may well be!

2. These tents are airy and spacious. You get a sense of ‘blurred lines’ where the outdoors and indoors merge . There’s not that definite ‘border’ as there is when you shut your lodge room door …

3. Did I mention huge ? The more luxurious tents are about 8.4 x 5.1 m (27.6 x 16.8 ft) to allow ample room for enormous beds, bespoke furniture, a gorgeous en-suite bathroom and even an alfresco shower.

4. The ‘windows’ are usually a simple screen or netting – letting the fresh scents and smells of the bush to waft in. It’s said that our sense and memories are intertwined ... “Smells do bring back memories,” says Dr. Ken Heilman, Professor of Neurology and Health Psychology at the University of Florida, USA. “Smell goes into the emotional parts of the brain and the memory parts, whereas words go into thinking parts of the brain.” Once you’ve smelled the African bush, it’ll be imprinted in your memory banks forever.

5. Often, these tented camps aren’t fenced in (no perimeter barrier or electrification) so the game are free to walk through the camp – and they often do! At these camps, please don’t risk walking alone at night, rather go with a ranger at all times.

6. Many of these tented camps are mobile , which means they can be packed up and moved on to follow the migrations of wildlife … or to take advantage of the seasons. And best of all? They leave no trace behind, affecting a minimal carbon footprint.

7. Tented camps are usually in private concessions , so you’re able to enjoy the full range of ‘private’ safari offerings: bush walks with experienced rangers (probably one of the most intimate ways to connect with nature), game drives that include off-road and night game drives, game viewing by motorised boats or poled mokoros (dug-out canoes).

8. Some camps – and even safari lodges – offer a sleep-out tented experience , which is usually very luxurious and usually on very high stilts. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the very adventurous and/or very romantic. While perfectly safe (you’re escorted there and back by experienced rangers), these overnight ‘hides’ are remote and give you a very memorable evening (which may or may not include a good night’s sleep. The animals are free to roam beneath you – something you’d probably prefer to stay awake for!)

9. By nature, these tented camps are generally small, intimate affairs – rarely consisting of more than 10 tents (or able to sleep 20 people), often less. You can arrange to book out the entire camp if there’s a group of you.

10. The tents can range from the most basic canvas structures with reed mats and neatly-swept paths to elaborate East-African style tents with permanent decking, stilts, private swimming pool and a sumptuous luxury that would make other 5-star establishments green with envy.

Is a tented safari on your bucket list? Have you experienced one already? Please tell us about it us in the comments below …

da wild canvas safari tents

A tent is a marvellous thing: not just a safe, weatherproof cocoon but a symbol of freedom for avid explorers the world over. For the safari industry, tents have always played a pivotal role in countless journeys to Africa, sometimes evolving from simple canvas stretched over poles to opulent villas in remote destinations. Yet the one thing they all have in common is a sense of absolute immersion, with just a thin piece of material between their occupants and the wilderness (and creatures) on the other side… These are our some of our favourite tented camps from across Africa:

da wild canvas safari tents

Everything but the Range Rover

Ultra-luxury in the middle of some of the remotest corners of Africa may sound like something of an oxymoron, but these tented camps prove that nothing is impossible.

Duba Plains Suite, Okavango Delta, Botswana

This exquisite private two-bedroom tented villa is tucked away in an exclusive section of the Okavango Delta, arguably the home of the luxury safari. The suite is raised on a wooden decking offering an unparalleled vantage point to observe the Delta’s famed wildlife viewing. Elegant features and attention to detail make this one of the most luxurious tented camp options.

Mara Plains Jahazi Suite, Olare Motorogi Conservancy

The intimate Mara Plains Jahazi Suite is so beautifully designed and appointed that were it not for the sweeping views and draped canvas overhead, it would be easy to forget that one was in a tent in Africa. Dine out to a lamplit dinner on the veranda before retreating to a night of sleep serenaded by Mara’s wild creatures.

Jack’s Camp, Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Botswana

In the middle of a land of vast space and otherworldly vistas, Jack’s Camp is resplendent , swathed in muslin and canvas: an homage to a forgotten era of safaris. The rich colours and ornate décor make time spent in the camp almost as engaging as exploring the wilderness beyond.

Angama Mara, Mara Triangle, Kenya

There are few views as magnificent as the one from Angama Mara’s beautifully appointed tents , decorated in the dazzling colours of traditional Maa culture. The name “Angama Mara” was inspired by the Swahili word for “suspended in mid-air”, and each tent “floats” 300 metres above the plains of the Maasai Mara, with the dark green S-bends of the Mara River curving south as far as the eye can see.

Tented camps

The definition of glamping

With the rise of the luxury tented safari experience came the increasing popularity of the term “glamping” – a portmanteau of “glamorous” and “camping”. These destinations take glamping to a whole new level.

Lemala Nanyukie Lodge, Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

“Nanyukie” translates as “endless plains” in Maa, the perfect description of the celebrated Serengeti surroundings. Lemala Nanyukie Lodge is based in a region of the Serengeti known for its exceptional concentration of cats, so anticipate falling asleep to the sound of a lion’s roar rumbling through the canvas walls, at one of Africa’s most comfortable tented camps.

Saseka Tented Camp, Thornybush Private Game Reserve, Greater Kruger, South Africa

Each of the luxury tents in Saseka comes with its own private deck, outdoor shower, and pool with views over the riverbed of one of the most wildlife-dense reserves in South Africa.

Mara Nyika Camp, Naboisho Conservancy, Kenya

Mara Nyika is an intimate tented camp set in a valley of one of the Maasai Mara’s largest private conservancies. Privacy and pampering are the fundamental pillars of the Mara Nyika Camp experience, set against one of the most spectacular backdrops in Africa.

Chisa Busanga Camp, Kafue National Park, Zambia

On a beautiful island in the heart of Busanga Plains you’ll find extraordinary Chisa Busanga Camp – characterised by human-sized bird’s nests inspired by the design of a weaver’s nest. Built from sticks and lined with canvas, this architectural marvel offers a unique way to experience the seasonal Kafue National Park.

Africa Geographic Travel

The tent next door

Roughing it in the wild is all good and well, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting some creature comforts while doing so. Thankfully, you’ll find the perfect balance at these tented camps.

Ongava Tented Camp, bordering Etosha National Park, Namibia

A safari classic, the Meru-style tents of Ongava Tented Camp all have ensuite facilities, open-air showers and private verandas. Tucked in a hidden valley at the foot of a dolomite hill, the camp is a natural extension of the arid landscape surrounding it.

Explorer Camp, Shamwari Private Game Reserve, South Africa

Explorer Camp is the ideal destination for those looking to explore Shamwari Private Game Reserve on foot. Here, visitors will discover the natural bounty of diverse flora, abundant insects, and the region’s many large and small mammals. Rustic and intimate, Explorer Camp offers the perfect combination of simple amenities and natural immersion.

Lemala Ngorongoro, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania

Hidden in an ancient acacia forest a short distance from the rim of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, the spacious tents of Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp are carefully positioned to provide privacy to their guests while keeping the impact on the pristine forest to a minimum. And it’s just a short drive to the magnificent wildlife viewing on the Crater’s floor!

Back to basics

Escaping to the wild doesn’t have to be about enjoying every convenience, and sometimes simpler really is better. There are plenty of ways to camp out in comfort without breaking the bank!

Flatdogs Camp, South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

The safari tents at Flatdogs Camp encapsulate the essence of an authentic “Africa under canvas” experience, set in a prime position along a riverbank in the heart of the world-renowned South Luangwa National Park.

Ndutu Kati Kati Tented Camp, Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Ndutu Kati Kati is a seasonal mobile camp , strategically situated in southern Serengeti from December to March, just in time to take advantage of the excitement of the arrival of the Great Migration. This camp is all about wildlife viewing, and the simple tents are the perfect base to rest between adventures.

Sango Safari Camp, Khwai Community Concession, Botswana

Nestled in the shade of the riverine trees overlooking the remarkable Khwai River, the ensuite Meru-style tents of Sango Safari Camp offer the perfect base from which to explore this magnificent part of the Okavango Delta. As one of the continent’s most exceptional little tented camps, Sango Safari Camp provides a neat compromise between affordability and subtle comfort.

Africa Geographic Travel

Back of beyond

Get off the beaten track and explore, then curl up in bed and embrace the sounds of the African bushveld after dark.

Ivory Trail Adventure, Gonarezhou National Park, Zimbabwe

This mobile camping experience allows exploration of the remotest corners of one of Zimbabwe’s greatest wilderness areas. The Ivory Trail Adventure is undeniably aptly named, with simple stretcher beds, bucket showers, and a long-drop toilet.

Ishasha Wilderness Camp, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda

Escape to the banks of the Ntungwe River at the Ishasha Wilderness Camp in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park, where you will share your space with resident troops of black-and-white colobus monkeys or a herd of passing elephants.

Mundulea Bush Camp and Walking Trails, Mundulea Nature Reserve, Namibia

The low-impact tents of Mundulea Bush Camp are hidden among woodland and dolomite outcrops in the unspoiled Karstveld. Each tent has its own private veranda area where guests can take a moment to soak in the absolute peace and quiet of this remote region of Namibia’s central highlands.

Mwaleshi Camp, North Luangwa National Park, Zambia

In the vast wilderness of Africa’s golden valley, North Luangwa National Park is often referred to as the home of the walking safari, and most of comfortable Mwaleshi Camp’s activities are conducted on foot. Here canvas has been replaced by thatching, but the effect is just as immersive. The simple camp perfectly matches the authentic, down-to-earth tone that epitomises the Zambian safari experience.

The safari tent has a clear sense of hierarchy, a wooden frame shell, and an interior canvas fabric tent. The frame is made of 80mm diameter high-toughness synthetic wood and steel connectors with anti-rust painting. The crack-free synthetic wood is selected for surface polishing and anti-corrosion treatment to ensure the service life of the canvas safari tent. The wood is connected with steel connectors when assembled to make the frame more stable. The inside canvas tent is fixed on the platform with rivets, and the 8mm anti-aging nylon rope tightly binds it to the frame, to make the tent stable to resist bad weather.

The framed roof is PVDF covered with a shade net, which can block 97% of ultraviolet rays to reduce heat accumulation. PVDF is waterproof and easy to clean. And the inside tent is typically made of weather-resistant and durable fabric-like canvas. 900D Oxford fabric, waterproof, fire retardant, anti-mosquito, UV-resistant, and fully protects people inside the tent. The roof and sidewall come in a range of colors – khaki, beige, green, and white – so that you can choose the look that best suits your site.

The sidewalls of the African safari tent are canvas with screen windows on both sides. The mesh window is large, which is very useful in hot summer, and the two-way ventilation allows the cool wind to blow in and keeps the tent at a comfortable temperature. Moreover, the field of vision inside the tent is wide, and you can easily see the scenery outside the tent. The window hole is less than 1mm, even those tiny flying insects can block them out of the tent, and it will not disturb you who enjoy summer in the tent. Each screen window comes with a roller shutter canvas window of the same area, and the thickness of the canvas window is also 2mm. In cold weather, pulling down canvas windows keeps the inside of the tent warmer and lose heat more slowly. The canvas window can be fixed with plastic buckles when up and closes with a zipper.

Usually, the door of the tent is a double-layer zipper door, the outer layer of canvas door, and the inner layer of gauze mesh door. These zippers are the best quality SBS zippers, they are not easy to break, and you don't have to worry about the zipper not closing. When the canvas door or the mesh door is opened, it can be secured with a side-release plastic buckle. In summer, you can only open the canvas door and close the mesh door, which can not only allow air circulation but also prevent insects from entering the tent.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - CANVAS TENTS - WALL TENTS

Are Your Canvas Tents Made In the USA?

Yes, we are proud to say that 100% of our wall tents are made and manufactured in the United States at our own facility.  Each stitch is sewn by a team that puts quality above everything else.

Why Canvas?

Canvas has a much longer life-span than nylon or polyester. Canvas can be re-treated for waterproofing, fireproofing, or UV agents.  It is also very breathable, which keeps moisture out of the tent and prevents condensation. Our Wall Tents have been tested for decades.  Many of our customers have had our tents in use for decades.  Wall Tents have a steep history in our country.  Our country was largely settled in the early years by travelers seeking protection from the elements in a wall tent or cabin tent. Whether you hunted, fished, mined or were trapping wild game in the woods the wall tent was your home.

Our designs, craftsmanship, construction and materials are the finest in the country. When you buy one of our Wall Tents you know that it will be a generational purchase. You will also know that it is was made by hand by the finest team in the Canvas Tent industry.

Can I order a Canvas Tent with a sewn-in floor?

Yes, we offer wall tents with sewn-in floors at the customer’s request.

Do I need a rain-fly?

No, a rain-fly is not necessarily needed.

However, a rain-fly can be used to help protect your tent from natures elements and sparks from your tent stove. This is inexpensive insurance for your investment and one we recommend. We do offer a rain-fly that is designed to fit your tent and already has a hole for the stove jack.  We can also modify the fly to include a porch.  We make our porches a variety of ways but can also manufacture your tent frame to include a porch so it ties seamlessly into your tent fly.

A fly will significantly increase the life span of your tent .  A fly guards the tent roof from damaging UV rays, delivers an additional moisture barrier, stops stove sparks from burning a small hole in your tent roof, and keeps your roof unsoiled from natures elements.

How much do the canvas wall tents weigh?

  • 10 oz  canvas- fire treated and waxed with a finish that makes it water resistant and fire resistant.  The weight will vary depending on your tent options and the size of your wall tent.   Contact us to get an exact measurement of the tent spec that you choose.
  • 13 oz. canvas - fire treated and waxed for water resistance.  Contact us for 13 oz. canvas options.  This option does add weight to your tent.  If you are packing your tent in via horseback or mules weight will become a larger concern making the 10 oz. a popular option for those packing their tents into the back-country.

Do you sell used canvas tents?

No, to guarantee our customers the finest quality and craftsmanship, all of our tents are custom made at the time of order.

Do you offer outfitters a discount?

Yes, we offer our wall tents at discounted prices to outfitters based on volume of order size. Give us a call and we will see what we can do for you. (406) 543-8303.

Do you build custom tents?

Yes, there is very little that we can’t do. Bring us any idea and we will work to make it exactly to your specifications with the finest materials. If you need something made from a fabric we have a solution. We love working with customers on new ideas. Our portfolio of custom work is extensive.

How long will my tent last?

Our generational custom wall tents typically last anywhere from 15 to 20 years. Making your investment more than worthwhile.

What is the floor made of?

When requested by the customer, we manufacture our wall tent floors out of a revolutionary shelter-lite vinyl that will last generations.  If your preference is to utilize another material we can discuss the properties of that material and how it will impact the function and life of your canvas tent.

Are the frames strong enough to stand up to a heavy snow load?

Our frames are very strong and under normal conditions withstand snow.  We don’t recommend letting the snow build up for a lengthy period of time and it should be brushed off the tent before it gets too heavy.

How many doors are there in the tent?

Our tents come with one door in the front center for easy access, measuring 8ft. We do offer an additional back door at the customers request.

Do I need an internal frame, or can the tents be hung externally?

Our canvas tents can be hung externally.  You can use lodge-pole or another wood in the back-country or utilize one of our internal wall tent frames.  If you are setting up a glamping tent we have a number of frame ideas to share related this setup as well.

With the internal frame do I need to anchor the tent?

Yes, we do recommend that when using an internal frame anchoring the tent, especially if it is windy.  You will anchor the canvas tent to the ground via tent stakes and also along the walls of the tent via rope and stakes.  Then when your tent fly is on there you will anchor that in the same way via rope an tent stakes.  The combination of all of these anchors helps your canvas tent withstand high winds, snow, rain and other elements that you will encounter in the outdoors while camping, hunting and fishing.

Are Big Sky Canvas’s wall tents compliant with CPAI-84 fire requirements?

Yes, all of our canvas wall tents are compliant with CPAI-84 fire requirements.

The following states require that our wall tents meet CPAI-84 fire treatment guidelines:

  • Massachusetts

All Big Sky Canvas tents sold in the above states meet those requirements.

How long does it take to set up a tent and frame?

To set up one of our canvas tents it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

What are the measurements of the side walls?

Our tent’s side walls measure 5’.

How to Choose the Best Canvas Tent for Your Next Camping Trip

Tents are the accommodation of choice for those who love to immerse themselves in nature, but did you know that the canvas tent also played an important role in our history?

Not only have tents been around since ancient times, but they've played a central role in sheltering and protecting soldiers in both the Revolutionary and   Civil War.  Nowadays camping out's associated more with leisure than survival, but it's still important to choose the right tent if you want to enjoy a comfortable stay.

Find out everything you need to know before you buy a canvas tent.

Why are Canvas Tents the Best Type of Tents?

You're probably wondering why you should choose a canvas tent for camping. After all, it's easy to find tents made from more modern-day materials.

Here's what makes canvas the fabric of choice for camping tents.

Protection from the Sun and Wind

Canvas tents are much tougher than their nylon counterparts. Once they're secured correctly, they won't flap around in high winds as much as lightweight tents do.

Since canvas is thicker than nylon and poly fabrics, less sunshine filters through into the inside of your tent. This means your tent offers cool respite in hot weather and can protect you from sun- and heat stroke.

Optimum Insulation

Likewise, thicker fabric means less heat escapes from your tent in cold weather, so you stay warm and toasty inside no matter what nature throws at you. The thicker the fabric, the warmer the inside of your tent will be.

Best for the Long Haul

If you want to enjoy camping trips of a week or more, a canvas tent is a top choice for you. Canvas tents will stay in place without sagging for much longer than lightweight nylon tents.

They're also much more durable and show little signs of wear and tear even after years of use.

Condensation and Breathability

Cotton is the main component of canvas tents, so they're infinitely more breathable than synthetic fabrics. That means less condensation and more fresh air inside your tent.

Sustainable Construction

Cotton is   organic and biodegradable , synthetic fabrics are not. It can take years for a synthetic tent to decompose, while canvas tents vanish into the landscape within weeks when you dispose of them.

Thanks to their long lifespan, few canvas tents ever end up in a landfill site for starters.

Heat and Tear Resistance

Canvas has the ability to shrug off sharp objects, like sticks and rocks with no ill effects. The thick walls of canvas tents can easily withstand the pulls and twists involved in setting up and transporting your tent too.

Always choose a tent that's treated with a fire retardant in accordance with   CPAI-84 guidelines .

Quick Fixes

In the unlikely event that you damage your canvas tent, it's easy and quick to fix it. It's always more affordable to sew a patch onto a tear than it is to replace your tent, and you can patch your canvas tent as many times as you need to

Safe Access

The doorways of wall canvas tents are open to the floor. That means there's less chance of tripping over that annoying fabric ledge that's a feature of D-zipper tents.

Having a larger door also means you'll experience less claustrophobia in a wall tent and you can relax in comfort with a view of your surroundings. Wall tents come with a full-length screen to keep unwanted visitors out when the door's left open.

What Type of Canvas Tent Suits Your Needs?

The first thing to consider when choosing a canvas tent for camping is how many people you want to accommodate in it. Canvas tents are available in a range of sizes from small tents measuring 8' x 10' to large ones of 16' by 20'.

Your next consideration is the type of tent you prefer. There are four main types of canvas camping tents:

Bell tents are sometimes called yurt tents and have a central pole as well as an A-frame pole for the entrance. They're quick to set up and have good wind resistance but can be a little cramped inside.

Range Tents

This versatile tent is ideal for those who want to travel light. It's simple and quick to set up and you can even suspended it from a tree branch if needed.

Usually, you'll pitch your   range tent   using a simple outside two-pole system.

Wall tents   are also called safari tents, or outfitter tents and are the perfect set up for large parties and long-term camping. The walls are usually about 5 ft tall and the interiors are spacious.

While wall tents can be cumbersome to transport and set up, they offer the most comfortable stay by far and are often a feature in permanent tented camps.

Glamping Tents

The versatility of wall tents mean that you can easily modify them with all kinds of conveniences for high-end campers.   Glamping tents  are usually permanent fixtures offering private bathrooms, decks, comfortable beds, and seating areas.

All our canvas wall tents are customizable according to your   exact specifications. So, let us know if you have something unique in mind and we'll be happy to accommodate your wishes.

Choosing Canvas Weight

The general rule regarding canvas weight is heavier canvas means better sun protection and more strength. Thicker canvas is also tougher and more resistant to tears.

Manufacturers rate the tensile strength of canvas fabric in ounces per square yard with 10.1 oz/sq. yd being the most common type of canvas. This is perfectly adequate for occasional summer use.

If you plan to camp for weeks on end or in very cold weather, it's best to choose a canvas that's heavier than 10.1oz.

Tent Hardware

Even the best canvas won't stop your tent from falling down if it's supported by flimsy poles and low-quality guide ropes. Always ask to see the hardware that comes with your tent before you buy

Bamboo poles are often used for lightweight, short-stay tents and do a good job thanks to the high tensile qualities of this bamboo. If you're looking for more substantial though, pick a tent that comes with a   steel conduit frame .

Tent pegs are one of the most important parts of your camping gear. Thin pegs will bend and break on rough ground, so avoid aluminum and plastic pegs.

Steel pegs or stakes are a far better option for securing your tent.

Tent Zippers

You probably won't give a second thought to the zippers on your tent while shopping around but it pays to remember that your tent is pretty useless if you can't seal it.

Look for the SBS or YKK marking on zippers, or at least try them out before you buy your tent.

The larger your tent, the more guy lines you'll need to secure it. A good quality rope won't tear when you tighten your guy lines and should last for many years. A minimum thickness of ¼” is best for guy rope sliders. Check that the sliders on your guy ropes are quality wood, metal, or aluminum. Avoid plastic sliders.

Floor Options

The main purpose of a floor is to keep the inside of your tent clean and dry. Vinyl is the best type of flooring for tents as it's durable, waterproof, and warm.

Bell tents usually come with a waterproof floor, but this isn't always the case with wall tents. You lay the floor down once you've erected your canvas tent.

Often you'll need to order a floor for your wall tent separately. If you want a sewn-in floor, you should specify it when you order your wall tent.

It's important to order your floor from the same company that made your tent. That way you're assured that the floor is compatible with your tent and the right size.

Tent Stitching

Like zippers, stitching is one of those often overlooked checkpoints when buying a tent. Yet, the way your tent's sewn together affects how waterproof, rip-proof and durable it's likely to be.

It's easy to see if seams have been carefully and fairly sewn in with strong, thick thread, so check your tent before you buy it.

Ventilation Points

Although canvas is a breathable material, canvas tents can get stuffy and hot in humid weather. Choose a tent that comes with mesh screened windows to help with ventilation.

Wall tents don't usually feature vents at the top of the tent, but we can add extra windows if you want more ventilation in your tent.

We are certain that our canvas tents will tick all your boxes when it comes to tent camping. We're proud to say that all our tents are proudly made in the USA and manufactured with extreme attention to detail.

Remove Moisture Before Storing

You should always remove moisture from your tent prior to storing the tent after your usage.  This is because moisture will inevitably gather on your tent in the form of snow, rain, morning dew and natural condensation. Spread out the tent in an indoor garage or shed until the canvas and sod cloth is completely dry.  This usually takes approximately 48-72 hours.  Setting up ladders or other elevated items in the area and spreading the tent out over the top can sometimes expedite the drying process.  Once the canvas is completely dry you can now roll the tent and store it away until your next trip.  Storing a wet or damp tent, despite being treated for mold or mildew resistance, can still develop mold.

WHY 100% COTTON?

Breathability! The reason breathability is so important is to minimize and eliminate condensation. Just 4 people in a tent produces 2 liters of condensation from their breath in one night! Add to that other elements that put moisture into the air – boiling water, heating with propane, drying your clothing, etc. – and you create a wet interior. Properly treated cotton allows this moisture to escape through the tent, keeping you warm and dry.

WHY SUNFORGER ® TREATED COTTON?

Breathability, longevity.

The type of treatment used to make your tent resist the effects of ultra-violet (UV) light from the sun, repel water and mildew, or retard the spread of fire is a critical factor not only for its impact on breathability, but also on how long your tent will hold up.

If you tore a single piece of untreated canvas in half and then applied Sunforger ® to one-half and a different treatment to the other, the Sunforger ® treated half would perform best in terms of strength, ability to breathe, overall integrity, and longevity.

Some would have you believe that all treatments are equal or a matter of brand preference (like Coke ® or Pepsi ®): this is simply not true. Inferior treatments impede breathability and cause more rapid deterioration of the canvas when exposed to the elements, making the tent both less comfortable and reducing its usable life. For these reasons, we pay extra for the Sunforger ® treatment!

We have been approached by many importers and, while we briefly considered offering an “economy line” of foreign produced (and, therefore, not Sunforger ® treated) tents, we have not yet found one that we felt comfortable putting our reputation on the line for.

I have had this tent and rain fly since 2014. I got a angle kit and Davis sent me the measurements to cut the 1″ conduit. I Use it 4 or 5 times a year. It’s hands down the best camping investment I have ever made. It’s currently set up (September rain/ hail) and has been for the last month for archery season. I am going to be using it in a different location for rifle. It’s going to do another October in the woods for more snow. Other than being dirty from use and packing is held up exceptionally well. No rips, tares or zipper problems. I have stopped by the shop in Denver a few times over the years and these guys are the best. You can’t go wrong with anything David makes.

Rated 5 out of 5 AWESOME - FIRST WALL TENT!

Jennifer parmenter – Aug 18, 2020

We purchased the 12 x 14 for a Nevada Bull Hunt. The tent is fantastic, watch one quick video on the set up and never had to pick up the instructions. Set up is totally intuitive, no one reading confusing directions and getting frustrated. We had bought every “wall tent” like structure at Cabelas and they were all a pain to assemble and a high priced cheaply made alternative – returned every one before we settled on the Davis tent. Did a hunt package which is great to get everything you need. Once assembled you can see how well made, sturdy, comfortable and beautiful it is. We color coded the legs to make it easy to tell them apart. We couldn’t be happier. Take down is a breeze and all the bags they come with are generous and fit everything. My ONLY suggestion would be sewing some grab handles on the large canvas bag the tent goes in, you have to just grab the edges to carry it and it is heavy:) Thanks Davis Tent!

Rated 5 out of 5 Long lasting for an AZ Packer.

Jeffrey Wilms – Aug 03, 2020

I have had two Davis tents, for about 20 years. They are an outstanding product. Very well built and durable (I am not gentle on things and I can’t break them). They preform well in all kinds of weather. Best product, best price – bar-none.

Rated 5 out of 5 Simply the best

Aaron – Apr 01, 2020

I have waited a long time to write this review. I wanted to gain exceptional experiences before providing my thoughts, well let me be honest…Coronavirus has given me plenty of time to do this now haha. I have used this tent for roughly 14 years in some of the harshest conditions Montana can throw at it. It has endured time flawlessly over those years and this has been the singularly best hunting purchase that I have ever made. I use this tent for roughly 1 to 2 months out of the year and all of the damage was caused due to my own faults. The tent is still extremely functional and has served me well. I have no doubt that this tent can carry me another 15 years in the mountains of Montana. From deer hunts to antelope to elk and mountain goats this tent has been with me through it all. Davis Tent and Awning is doing it right! I spent months of research and asked so many questions to the Davis boys before I was satisfied enough to drop my coin on their name….best decision ever.

Rated 5 out of 5 Big Mistake

Nathan Adams – Jul 21, 2019

I bought one of these tent’s in 1998 at a hunting show in Salt Lake City. I used it for 20 years, every year some times twice in a year. We would normally camp at 10K feet for a week, used a wood stove for heat. This was the best purchase I ever made in 35 years of hunting. Tent durability was awesome. Sold it to a friend in 2017, biggest mistake I’ve ever made as an adult. Wish I had it back. Many years we were Elk hunting in 1-2 feet of snow, sleep like a baby. Playing cards in a T-shirt. Great memories, we called her the “Taj Mahal” Now I’m on this site looking to buy another one. If they are of the same quality as 1998 tent’s. BUY IT !!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 The Best Tent

John Hartsock – May 12, 2018

I have had two other tents from these guys, and I will only buy tents from these guys. They are the best.

Rated 5 out of 5 20+ years and going strong!

Rod Johnson – Nov 11, 2017

I have had my 14×16 and my 16×20 Davis tents for over 20+ years. I am extremely pleased with the purchases (bought two stoves as well) and none show any wear even though I use them for most years over multiple elk/deer seasons. One year my son and I were snowed in with my 14×16 tent for 5 days. Opening day we got 4 feet of snow overnight and spent 4 days digging out! In 2016 the tents took the record wind beating near Fraser. Only issue was I misjudged how tall a tree was by one foot and the wind blew over the tree and hit my fly cover over the tent. Fly cover tore but not the tent. Davis tent repaired my 20+ year old fly cover. Over the years many hunters have commented on the tents and my camp set up. I would absolutely, with no reservations, recommend Davis Tent and Awning Tents!!!! Great People.

Rick – Oct 07, 2017

Bought the Davis 10×12 wall tent last year and absolutely love it. We have used this tent numerous times throughout this last year. Much cooler than a nylon tent during the summer and toasty warm with the stove going during the winter. Heat, wind, rain, snow, no leaks, no condensation, and not one problem. Best tent we have ever owned.

After much research and calling wall tent makers around the north west I found that Davis Tent and awning was the most friendly and the most willing to work with me to find what would best suite my needs. Their knowledge of wall tents is second to none. After much discussion I ordered a 14×16 wall tent / stove combination, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. Fantastic products and great customer service what more could you ask for.

Lucas Palmer – Jan 01, 2017

I spent over a year researching wall tents from different manufactures and finally decided on Davis. This was a great choice. My family has used various wall tents over the years including Montana Canvas, another great manufacture, however you can not beat the price and quality that Davis tent offers. The build quality is fa-nominal and if taken care of properly will last a life time.

11 Best Places To Go Glamping In Tennessee

Home » Blog » Destinations » 11 Best Places To Go Glamping In Tennessee

glamping tennessee

Tennessee, a grand state in the Southeastern region of the United States is blessed with a number of natural wonders. The stark rocky mountains, scenic national and state parks, beautiful waterfalls, and vast stretches of luscious green woods make the state worth exploring.

When you are visiting a place so naturally blessed, staying in a luxurious hotel can refrain you from taking the full essence. However, people who have never done camping may not be completely comfortable with it. Thus, for the rescue of all, the concept of glamping came over, which simply means “ Glamourous Camping ”.  The state of Tennessee is filled with a number of wonderful glamping sites that will provide you with all the luxuries while keeping you connected to the breathtaking surroundings.

Here’s a list of the 11 Best Places To Go Glamping In Tennessee for all you adventure seekers:

  • Tennessee Glamping at Deer Park

This glamping site has always been on top of the list for creating the first and last impression on the visitors. It is a 12×12 cozy treehouse camping cabin that is close to both the hiking trails and the fall creek state park.

The well-lit cabin and pathways create an absolute welcoming and romanticizing ambiance for the guest to sit and relax peacefully.  An exquisite range of luxuries has been provided including a comfortable queen-sized bed, lounger, fireplace, outdoor kitchen, and an impressive bathhouse.

No matter what your mood is, to go out on an adventurous hiking trip or to just sit back with a book near the fire pit, this treehouse lets you do it all.

  • Airstream Farm Glamping

This Airstream glamping site has been recommended as a complete glamping package by its visitors. Very rightly mentioned by its hosts, this accommodation will take the guests to another world, away from all hustles and bustles of a city straight to the lap of nature.

The accommodation situated right in the middle of farms has been upgraded and renovated with all the conveniences to fit any family, group of friends or newlywed couples. It is a 500 sqft place including a bedroom that can accommodate four, a separate bathhouse, kitchen, living room, and the front porch with patio seating.

Guests in this airstream accommodation can experience living in the fresh farmland along with its inhabitants without having to compromise on all the luxuries they want.

  • Little Arrow Resort

One of the most luxurious glamping sites available in the grand state of Tennessee is the Little Arrow, which is an outdoor resort.  The resort offers several options of glamping accommodations like luxury glamping tents, lodges, and primitive camps, all with added amenities and homestyle comfort.

Apart from enjoying the comfortable woody atmosphere of the rooms, there is a lot of sightseeing and adventures you can do when staying at Little Arrows.  You can embrace the beautiful night sky sitting around an outdoor fire pit.

Visiting the Tuckaleechee cavern, the tallest waterfall in the U.S on a breezy day or taking a day out with the family to the beautiful Dollywood Amusement Park on a beautiful sunny day, would be the best things to make your trip memorable.

  • Treetop Hideaways

The Treetop Hideaways are among the most loved glamping destinations that have been created with the idea of incorporating modern architecture with rustic treehouses. At Treetop Hideaways you are given the option to choose between two beautifully built luxurious treehouses, naming the Elements treehouse and the Luna loft Treehouse, wherein both of these have their own USPs.

While the Elements treehouse is made with modernized systems and luxurious facilities, the Luna Loft treehouse on the other hand is designed in an old-fashioned manner with all the softness to give you a royal and relaxing feeling.

When you are staying at the Treetop Hideaways, hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, rock climbing, and other such adventures can be done just in a drive of a few minutes.
