Tour de France 2024 overview

The 2024 Tour de France will begin on Saturday 29 June, with a first-ever Grand Départ in Italy. The 111th edition of Le Tour will run until Sunday 21 July, finishing in Nice. It will be the first time in the race's history that it will finish outside of France's capital due to the Olympic Games.

The race will feature four summit finishes across the three weeks, at Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet and Plateau de Beille in the Pyrenees before Isola 2000 and Col de la Couillole in the Alps. There are three further mountain days, four hilly stages, and eight stages for the sprinters to target.

Two time trials feature in the route too, with a 25km course on stage 7 and a 34km final stage time trial into Nice. It marks the first time that the Tour de France will conclude with a race against the clock since the iconic Fignon-LeMond battle in 1989.

Gravel also makes an appearance at the Tour for the first time in 2024, with 32km of Champagne region white gravel roads included in stage 9's parcours.

The full route for 2024's edition was unveiled by race organisers ASO on October 25 at Paris' Palais des Congrès.

Tour de France 2024 key information

When is the Tour de France 2024?  The 2024 edition of the Tour de France will start on Saturday 29 June and run until Sunday, 21 July.

Where does the Tour de France 2024 take place?  The 2024 Tour de France starts in Italy for the opening three stages, before moving to France for the remainder. For the first time in the race’s history, it will finish outside Paris, due to the 2024 Olympic Games in the French capital, with Nice stepping in to host the finale. In between the Tour will make use of its two staple high-mountain ranges, the Alps and Pyrenees.

Who won the Tour de France in 2023?  The 2023 edition was won by Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), with the Dane putting two-time winner Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) to the sword for the second year in a row. The contest was evenly-matched until the stage 16 time trial in the Alps, where Vingegaard blew the competition to smithereens.

How old is the Tour de France?  The Tour Tour de France was first held in 1903. The 2024 edition is the 111th.

Who won the first Tour de France?  Maurice Garin was the first ever winner of the Tour de France in 1903, winning the opening stage and holding the lead all the way through.

Who has the most wins at the Tour de France?  Four riders stand at the top of the all-time honours list, with five victories each for Jacques Anqetuil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Miguel Indurain They claimed their fifth titles, respectively, in 1964, 1974, 1985, 1995.

Tour de France 2024 route: Four summit finishes, two time trials and gravel roads

The 2024 Tour de France will feature four summit finishes, two time and some gravel roads after a testing start in Italy.

The route for the 111th edition of the race was officially unveiled to the world in Paris’ Palais des Congrès on October 25th by race organisers ASO.

An Italian Grand Départ for the first time ever was already known, so too were the race's final two stages, taking place around Nice as the traditional finish in Paris has been disrupted by the French capital gearing up for the Olympic Games. It marks the first finish outside Paris in the Tour de France's history.

Starting in Florence on June 29 and finishing, 21 stages and two rest days later, in Nice on July 21, the race will cover 3,405.6km, through Italy, San Marino, Monaco and France, with a total of 52,230m of elevation gain.

The race's mountain-heavy focus across the board is clear to see, with a hilly opening few days in Italy followed by a return to France with a bang. Stage 4 sees the race head north from Pinerolo in Italy and the only way is via the Alps. An early meeting with the Col du Galibier before a finish down in Valloire on stage 4 means the highest point in the 2024 Tour will come on the first day of racing on French soil.

Once that's tackled, the Tour de France heads north for a time trial and some gravel roads along France's eastern flank.

As the race enters its second half, back-to-back summit finishes await in the Pyrenees before the riders return to the Alps with finishes atop Isola 2000 and La Colmiane likely to play a deciding factor in the overall standings.

Even after the Alps are dealt with, a final stage individual time trial from Monaco to Nice still includes some climbing, with both La Turbie and Col d'Èze to be tackled before the three weeks can officially be drawn to a close and the winner crowned.

The 2024 Tour de France route will feature gravel for the first time

The 2024 Tour de France route will feature gravel for the first time

Despite the race actually featuring 4,170m less elevation gain that the 2023 edition, its bookend positioning is likely to keep the sprinters up at night. The 2024 Tour de France route will traverse four different mountain ranges over the three weeks, including the Apennines in Italy, both the Italian and French Alps, the Massif Central and the Pyrenees. Of the seven mountain stages, four of them will be summit finishes: Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet, Plateau de Beille, Isola 2000 and the Col de la Couillole.

Meanwhile, away from the climbing, there's an increase to the time trialling distance at the 2024 Tour de France. Compared to 110th edition's meagre serving of just 22km, there will be 59km against the clock in 2024 on stages 7 and 21. The first ITT is a 25km rolling test, whilst the final stage measures 34km from Monaco to Nice which includes the La Turbie and Col d’Eze climbs before a long descent back to the coast for a short run up and down the Promenade des Anglais to finish the Tour.

The sprinters will be buoyed by at least seven possible chances of glory, however they will first have to battle through the opening few days in the Apennines and Alps.

Arguably one of the most eye-catching days of the race will fall on stage 9, with 32km of white gravel roads included on the route that starts and finishes in Troyes. The hilly stage features 14 gravel sectors across its 199km distance, with the first arriving after 47km and the last just 10km from the line.

Tour de France 2024 contenders: Vingegaard, Roglič, Evenepoel and surely Pogačar

Although the route has not yet been officially unveiled, it’s already clear that we will have a stellar cast of Grand Tour stars for the 2024 Tour de France. Jonas Vingegaard , winner of the past two editions is all but certain to return to go for the triple, and build his season around that target.

It’s also no secret that Primož Roglič , having won the Giro d’Italia last year and the Vuelta a España three times before that, has made the Tour the central ambition of what remains of his career. He has forced an exit from Jumbo-Visma precisely to make that happen, and will certainly lead the line for his new team Bora-Hansgrohe next July.

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) has also strongly indicated that 2024 is the time for his Tour de France debut, even if the Giro d’Italia’s hefty helping of time trialling might give him some cause for doubt. The 23-year-old Belgian won the Vuelta in 2022 but was forced out of this year’s Giro with COVID-19 before an off-day derailed his Vuelta, but he is eager to make the next step to the highest rung of Grand Tour riders.

There is a little more doubt surrounding the other member of the superstar tier of contenders, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), who has been linked with a debut at the Giro. The Slovenian won the Tour twice in 2020 and 2021 but has been runner-up to Vingegaard for the past two years and, for a rider so keen on variety, 2024 may well be the time to shake things up. Even if he did the Giro, it’s unlikely UAE would let him miss the Tour entirely. Whether he could win both is another matter – no one has done it since Marco Pantani in 1998.

Ineos Grenadiers won seven yellow jerseys in the nine years from 2012 to 2019, but have fallen from their perch and don’t appear to have a rider on the same level of those listed above, with Carlos Rodríguez and possibly Geraint Thomas to carry the torch.

Which teams are racing the Tour de France 2024?

The 2024 Tour de France will comprise 22 teams, 18 of which are the WorldTour teams , and two of which are set to be the automatically-invited top two second-division ProTeams . That leaves two wildcard slots for the organisers to grant to teams of their choosing.

  • AG2R Citroën
  • Alpecin-Deceuninck
  • Arkéa Samsic
  • Astana Qazaqstan
  • Bahrain Victorious
  • Bora-Hansgrohe
  • dsm-firmenich
  • EF Education-EasyPost
  • Groupama-FDJ
  • Ineos Grenadiers
  • Intermarché-Circus-Wanty
  • Jayco AlUla
  • Jumbo-Visma
  • Soudal-Quick Step
  • UAE Team Emirates
  • Lotto Dstny (if they take up their invite)
  • Israel-Premier Tech (if they take up their invite)
  • Wildcard invite (TBC)

Tour de France jerseys

As well as 21 stage wins, there are also four distinctive jerseys up for grabs at the Tour de France, with each of the four awarded to a rider at the end of each stage, before the ultimate winner is crowned at the end of the race.

The jersey winners at the 2023 Tour de France

Yellow jersey (maillot jaune) –  worn by the leader of the general classification, the rider with the lowest overall time.

Polka dot jersey (maillot à pois) –  worn by the leader of the mountains classification, with points awarded on all categorised climbs.

Green jersey (maillot vert) –  worn by the leader of the points classification, which is based on finishing positions on all road stages. This is often a sprinter.

White jersey (maillot blanc) –  worn by the best young rider, being 25 or under, on the general classification.

Additional classifications:  There is a teams classification, where the riders of the leading team wear yellow dossards (bib numbers), and a combativity prize, where the boldest rider from the previous stage wears a red dossard, with an overall combativity award presented at the end.

What happened at the Tour de France 2023?

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) won the 2023 Tour de France, claiming his second straight yellow jersey after another entertaining battle with Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates)

Vingegaard landed the first real blow, gaining over a minute on the first Pyrenrean stage in the opening week, but Pogačar hit back the very next day, dropping Vingegaard en route to stage victory at Cauterets. The pair were locked in battle throughout the second week, with Pogačar the chief aggressor on the Puy de Dome, Grand Colombier, and the Col de Joux Plane that preceded the finish in Morzine.

However, he could not shake Vingegaard, and he was knocked for six on the opening day of the final week as the Dane produced one of the most stunning time trial displays in recent memory, taking more than 90 seconds on the hilly TT in the Alps. This time, Pogačar could not fight back, and he fell apart the next day on the tough stage over the Col de la Loze to Courchevel, falling to more than seven minutes down.

There was one final kick-back, as Pogačar won the penultimate stage on the Markstein, but Vingegaard was sailing by that point, and rode into Paris to seal his second Tour de France title.

The green jersey was won by Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), who won four sprint stages, while the polka-dot mountains jersey was won by Lidl-Trek’s Italian Giulio Ciccone. Pogačar was the best young rider in his last year of eligibility, while Jumbo-Visma topped the teams classification.

Tour de France history

This maiden Tour started in Montgeron and finished in Paris, visiting Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Nantes along the way. Many of the stages in this first edition exceeded 400km in length, forcing riders to race throughout the night. The home favourite, Maurice Garin, won this inaugural edition and in doing so etched his name into the cycling history books. The Frenchman, affectionately known as ‘The Little Chimney Sweep’, won the first edition by a massive margin of two hours, 59 minutes and 21 seconds - the largest ever winning margin in the history of the race.

In the editions that followed the race snowballed in popularity and soon inspired similar races elsewhere in Europe, most notably in Italy with the Giro d’Italia. During these early years Desgrange toyed with the race’s format and in 1910 he sent the race on its first foray into the Pyrenees, setting a precedent that would remain for nearly every edition since.

He changed the race once again in the 30s when he introduced the concept of national teams, forcing riders to race for their countries rather than their trade teams. After a brief hiatus during World War II the race returned in 1947 under the control of a new chief organiser, Jacques Goddet. Goddet orchestrated the race up until 1986, slowly moulding it into the three-week race we all know and love today.

Over these post-war years, each decade has been dominated by a different rider - their names almost as famous as the Tour itself. Jacques Anquetil dominated during the 60s, Eddy Merckx the 70s, Bernard Hinault the 80s and Miguel Indurain the 90s. These four riders also share the record for the largest number of wins, having won five overall titles apiece.

France dominates the winners list in this race, with 36 wins from 109 editions. Despite topping this list, the home nation has failed to win since 1985 when Hinault took his fifth and final overall title. Several Frenchman have come close over the years - most recently Romain Bardet who placed second in 2016 - but none have managed to bring home the coveted yellow jersey and end the 38-year drought.

It’s France’s sporting rivals, Great Britain, who dominated the race during the last decade. Since 2012, British riders have taken six overall titles with three different riders - Bradley Wiggins (2012), Chris Froome (2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017) and Geraint Thomas (2018). All three of these riders rode for Team Sky during their Tour-winning years, a team that dominated the Grand Tours for the best part of a decade. In 2019 they won their seventh Tour title in just eight years, with the young Colombian, Egan Bernal.

The British team, however, have fallen from their perch, with UAE Team Emirates and Jumbo-Visma usurping them in the UCI rankings and sharing the past four Tours between them. The Vingegaard-Pogačar rivalry has served up a thrilling modern chapter of the Tour de France, and witg Evenepoel and Roglič joining the fray from different angles, the 2024 edition promises to be a blockbuster.

“Symbol of the mountains, of a rider pushing beyond their limits and of courage, the red polka dot jersey, which is sponsored by Carrefour, is awarded to the Tour de France’s leader of the best climber classification. Although this classification was introduced in 1933, its symbol, the polka dot jersey, appeared in 1975, which was also the year the Tour first finished on the Champs-Élysées and was won by Bernard Thévenet. It owes its appearance to track racing specialist Henri Lemoine, who competed between the 1930s and 1950s, and that Félix Lévitan, co-director of the Tour with Jacques Goddetwhich, had particularly noticed. While Belgium’s Lucien Van Impe was its first winner and claimed the mountains classification six times, just like his illustrious predecessor, Spain’s Federico Bahamontes, the so-called “Eagle of Toledo”, Frenchman Richard Virenque holds the record for victories with seven titles” ( Tour de France, Polka Dot Jersey ).

  • Richard Virenque : 7 (1994-1997, 1999, 2003, 2004; best tour finish #2 1997)
  • Frederico Bahamontes : 6 (1954, 1958, 1959, 1962, 1963, 1964; nine in Grand Tours)

EXPLANATION OF KING OF MOUNTAIN, KOM POINTS, AND BONUS POINTS

FOR THE 2024 TOUR DE FRANCE

KOM DEFINED :  Climb-related points are accumulated during the race.  The rider with the most accumulated points at the beginning of the stage wears the red polka dot jersey that day, and the rider with the most points at the end of the race is crowned that year’s Tour de France King of the Mountains.

“ Category ”:   When the mountain classification (King of the Mountains) was introduced in 1933, there were points given to the first 10 riders over the summit (10 for first, 1 for tenth).  In 1947, the Tour introduced two climb “categories” with a certain amount of points for the second category and twice as many as for the first category.  Over the years “categories” were added, in addition to an “Above” category (Hors or HC) and since 1979 there have been a HC (hardest), Category 1 (second hardest) on down to Category 4 (least difficult climb).

The category of the climb is significant for two reasons:

  • The points awarded for the TdF KOM for each climb is based upon the category of climb - thus, “category” is the basis for the points that are used to determine each year’s King of the Mountains.
  • Most cycling fans, particularly Grand Tour fans, are very interested in the climb “category” because that tells them how hard each climb on a stage is, where the riders will struggle more, and the point in a stage where that day, or even the entire tour, will be won or lost.

KOM HISTORY :

  • King of the Mountains : Mountain Classification victories (first recognized in 1933; jersey introduced 1975)
  • 2020 & 2021 King of the Mountains:   Tadej Pogačar , Slovenia (also won the TdF and the Young Rider classification)
  • 2022 -  Jonas Vingegaard (NED) - also won TdF.
  • 2023 - Giulio Ciccone  (ITA)

POINTS :  KOM points are awarded in three ways on the Tour de France:

  •  To riders first over the summit of categorized climbs (in descending order HC, 1-4).
  • The higher the category the more riders receive points (HC points are awarded to eight riders, while CAT 4 points are awarded to only one rider).
  • Bonus point (see below).
  • Points for altitude finishes.

TDF POINTS FORMULA : Wikipedia has the best summary and graph we’ve seen for TdF KOM points distribution:

The points gained by consecutive riders reaching a mountain top are distributed according to the following classification:

data tour de france 2024

Wikipedia - Mountains Classification - Tour de France

BONUS POINTS :  These points go towards the King of the Mountain designation and are awarded to the first (8 points), second (5 points), and third (2 points) riders reaching designated summits in the race.

  • There are no KOM bonuses in the 2022 Tour de France.

2024 Tour de France expected to start in Tuscany and finish in Nice

Opening stages will remember Bottecchia, Bartali, Nencini, Pantani and Coppi

The 111th edition of the Tour de France is expected to start in Italy in 2024, with the Grand Depart in Florence and stages celebrating former winners Gino Bartali, Riccardo Nencini, Marco Pantani, Ottavio Bottecchia and Fausto Coppi.

Bottecchia was the first Italian to win the Tour de France and 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of his victory.

The Tour de France has visited Italy a number of times but never started there. Thanks to an estimated €10 million fee raised by the Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna and Piemonte regions, the 2024 Grand Boucle will include  three stages in Italy and the start of stage 4 in Pinerolo before the race heads into France via the Alps.

According to a detailed report by La Gazzetta dello Sport , the 2024 Tour de France will also have a unique finish, with Nice expected to host the final stage instead of Paris.

The French capital will host the Olympic Games in 2024, making it impossible to host the traditional final stage of the Tour de France on the Champs-Élysées just a few days before the Opening Ceremony. The 2024 Tour de France will be held between Saturday June 29 and Sunday July 21, a week earlier than usual, with the Paris Olympics scheduled for between July 26 and August 11.

Prudhomme visits Bologna to discuss Italian Tour de France Grand Départ Pogacar: The pressure for this year's Tour de France is already there Tour de France 2022

Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme visited Italy in 2020 to first negotiate a deal for the Grand Depart and in recent weeks race staff have visited the locations of the different stages to assess the logistics.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport , the opening stage will start in Florence in Piazzale Michelangelo that overlooks the Renaissance city. The 190km road stage will celebrate 1938 and 1945 Tour winner Gino Bartali by passing through his birthplace in Ponte a Ema. The stage will then climb through the Apeninnes and finish on the Romagna coast in Rimini to show off the Adriatic coastline.

Stage 2 will start in Cesenatico, where Marco Pantani was born, and also climb into the hills before a finish in central Bologna after 200km of racing. This  stage could climb up to Barberino di Mugello to remember 1960 winner Gastone Nencini.

Stage 3 will be from Modena to Piacenza with another hilly road stage, much like the 2021 Giro d’Italia stage to Sestola, where the USA’s Joe Dombrowski won. The area is known as Italy’s food valley due to the production of cured ham and Parmigiano cheese.

After a transfer west to Piemonte, the Tour de France will leave Italy from Pinerolo, recalling Fausto Coppi’s legendary breakaway in the 1949 Tour de France. Coppi was the first rider to ever complete the Giro d’Italia-Tour de France double in 1949 and repeated the feat in 1952.

Prudhomme is expected to confirm Italy as the host of the 2024 Grand Depart when the full route of the 2023 race is presented in Paris in late October.

Strava reveals headline segment data for tour de france and tour de france femmes avec zwift 2024, as an official partner of the global cycling event, the platform’s features help tour directors create routes and headline segments .

Strava, the subscription platform at the center of connected fitness, today revealed key segments and route data for the 2024 edition of the Tour de France and Tour Femmes avec Zwift (the tour). As the official partner of the tour, Strava’s data and mapping technology has long underpinned the route planning for the global cycling event.

The route announcement is part of Strava’s partnership with the tour. The tour course design teams have used Strava to create the race routes by analyzing insights from millions of public Strava activity uploads.

"Between the Segments and the Global Heatmap, Strava gives me the opportunity to visualize the routes most used by cyclists from all horizons to enrich the volume of information needed to design the Tour route. Strava also highlights the routes favored by pro riders for their training, enabling me to design stages that, beyond meeting the needs of the race, stick as closely as possible to the very values of cycling: effort and discovery," said Thierry Gouvenou, Race Director, Tour de France.

The segments have been revealed alongside the route unveiling announced today by the Amaury Sport Organisation at Palais des Congrès in Paris.

Each stage of the tour borrows segments created by Strava athletes. For each stage, the organization selects several official segments, which then become the reference for the cycling community.

Col de la Bonnette

L'Alpe d'Huez

Strava data also revealed the completion increase of the Tour 2023 official segments. Notable year-over-year increases include:

Col du Feu : An increase of 892%. 2023 was the first time this pass had been on the Tour de France schedule.

Col de la Loze : 226% completion increase on 2023’s toughest pass.

Jaizkibel : 121% completion on one of the Basque Country's most emblematic passes.

Col du Tourmalet : 62% increase on one of the world's most famous mountain passes.

Official Tour de France 2024 Route Announcement

The route will be officially unveiled this October 25th in Paris. The presentation will be live and on-demand on FloBikes.

Already, the organizer ASO announced the race would start in Italy for the first time in its 100-plus-year history. The first stage starts in Florence and works its way to Rimini, Bologna, and Turin before heading back to its home country.

ASO also announced the final stage in Nice, a time trial, would end the three-week grand tour. The first time the race finished outside of Paris, due to the 2024 Olympics in the capital, and the first time trial finish since the dramatic Greg LeMond victory in 1989.

The rest of the three weeks is a gray area, but light gray as we are getting closer to the announcement and the local newspapers are reporting some details.

Tour de France 2024 - What's Expected In The Route

We are uncertain of the Alpe d'Huez featuring two times as simply a pass in the 2024 edition. Though the route passes in the area, the climb often instead features as a finish.

The three-week course should travel north from the Alps and the Jura mountains, through vineyards in what will be a tricky first week.

Time trial? Check. And it could be a team time trial on stage near Dijon or Côte d'Or. Gravel? Yes, it seems to be on the menu with a stage near Troyes at the end of week one.

From central France, the race will head towards the southwest and the mountains of the Pyrénées. Expect a hard Massif Central stage along the way and cross-wind days as an aperitif to the high mountains. Finishes at Pla d'Adet, 50 years since Raymond Poulidor, and Plateau de Beille – 16km at 7.7%.

data tour de france 2024

Heading through France's south, the Tour should end with a bang. Mountains galore, summit finishes at Super Dévoluy, Isola 2000 over the highest road Bonette along the way, the Col de la Couillole stage 20 that Tadej Pogacar won in the 2023 Paris-Nice.

That stage 20, and the stage 21 35.2km time trial were already confirmed. The rest will be revealed on October 25 when the organizer announces the official route of the 2024 Tour de France.

The 2024 Men’s Tour de France Will Finish Up With a Hilly 35K Time Trial

There will be no Paris finale, but instead a tough summit finish on Stage 20 and a final stage time trial on Stage 21 ending in Nice.

topshot cycling fra tdf2020 stage20

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. How we test gear.

For the first time in the long and storied history of cycling’s ultimate race, the men’s Tour de France will not finish in Paris, and for the first time since 1975, with a crit-style loop around the Champs-Élysées.

In addition to announcing the final stage, Tour organizers unveiled the penultimate 20th stage, which will feature a summit finish on the Col de la Couillole, a 15.7K climb which averages 7.1 percent. It will be the fourth categorized climb of the stage and one that Tadej Pogačar, who will more than likely be a 2024 favorite, rode to a Paris-Nice victory just last weekend.

The Tour finishing away from Paris will be strange, no doubt, but those final two stages could very well provide for one of the most exciting Tour finishes in years, as, depending on how the 19 stages before it shake out, the penultimate stage could equalize the field in advance of the final time trial.

Unless the yellow jersey has built an insurmountable lead by then, a 35K time trial could mean we’re watching the 2024 Tour come down to its final day, which is a far cry from the typical race into Paris, which is traditionally ceremonial in regards to the General Classification standings.

In addition to finishing away from Paris, the 2024 Tour will also begin on new ground, as, for the first time ever, the Grand Départ will kick off in Italy with a brutal 205-km stage from Florence to Rimini. Stages two and three will also cover Italian ground before the peloton heads to France for the following few weeks.

Tour de France 2024 Route stage 6: Mâcon - Dijon

The altitude gain between Mâcon and Dijon is less 900 hoogtemeters, so the fast men will be looking forward to the finale in Dijon. Which is an added attraction for the sprinters, as the road is dead straight in the last 800 metres.

Starting venue Mâcon is located on the River Saône and it hosts Le Tour for the seventh time. The last time was in 2019 and Thomas De Gendt took the win that day. The breakaway specialist crossed the line in Saint-Étienne 7 seconds ahead of Thibaut Pinot and Julian Alaphilippe.

The last Tour de France stage finish in Dijon happened in 1997. Bart Voskamp outgunned Jan Heppner in a two-up sprint, but both were relegated and the winner of the peloton sprint, Mario Traversoni, was declared stage victor. It was the biggest win in his career.

Power Analysis: The Moment Mathieu van der Poel Won the Tour of Flanders

We dive into the power numbers of mathieu van der poel, luca mozzato, oier lazkano, and more at the tour of flanders..

One of the most difficult feats in cycling is winning a race in which you are the overwhelming favorite. As a marked rider, the other teams will never let you go in the breakaway, and with every attack that you make, there’s a good chance that the entire peloton will be glued to your wheel. Mathieu Van der Poel was a marked man — literally marked by the resplendent rainbow strips of World Champion — yet he still rode away from the entire field to win his third Tour of Flanders .

In this article, we take a closer look at the power data from the Tour of Flanders , and what it takes to race with the best classics riders in the world.

Three Hours of Fatigue in the Legs

The Tour of Flanders is one of the longest races in professional cycling, stretching 271 kilometers from Antwerp to Oudenaarde. It’s easy to forget the first 130km of the race because there weren’t many crucial events that affected the outcome of the race. But the riders’ legs don’t forget these first 130km, which are building fatigue and burning through kilojoules. This approximately three-hour period will come back to haunt many of them. Here’s a look at second-place finisher Luca Mozzato’s start to the 2024 Tour of Flanders.

power analysis tour of flanders matheiu Van der Poel.

Mozzato – First 130 km of the Tour of Flanders

Time : 2:52:46

Average Power : 211w (3.2w/kg)

Normalized Power : 240w (3.6w/kg)

Now…the Hard Part (115 km to go)

The next phase of the race kicked off with 115 km to go when the peloton began climbing the Kapelberg. Over the next 100 km, the riders would take on 16 helligen , the famous Flemish climbs, many of which are made of cobblestones.

Oier Lazkano was one of the foremost riders in the race, climbing alongside Van der Poel, Mads Pedersen , and Matteo Jorgenson . The Spanish Champion put his incredible power on display by accelerating on multiple climbs and holding a normalized power of more than 420 watts for 90 km.

Near the end of this period, Lazkano attempted to follow Van der Poel’s attack on the Oude Kwaremont. In fact, the Spaniard was the only rider who was able to close the gap to the world champion, catching him just before the summit. This is what it took to chase down Mathieu van der Poel on the famous Oude Kwaremont.

Lazkano – Peak 2-Hour Normalized Power

Time : 2:07:34

Average Power : 354w (4.8w/kg)

Normalized Power : 422w (5.8w/kg)

Following MVDP on the Oude Kwaremont: 555w (7.9w/kg) for 3:19

Koppenberg: The Turning Point of the Race

Few could have predicted the chaos that decided the 2024 Tour of Flanders. While most expected MVDP to win, few saw it happening like this.

As the peloton raced towards the Koppenberg — known as the toughest climb in Flanders — there were reports of danger ahead. The Koppenberg cobbles were so wet and muddy that the race officials warned the peloton ahead of their ascent. And they were 100 percent right .

Van der Poel accelerated to the front of the peloton as the race hit the Koppenberg. Jorgenson attempted to follow, and both riders struggled to maintain traction on the muddy cobbles. In a comical and shocking turn of events, the rest of the peloton couldn’t even stay on their bikes. Riders unclipped and began to walk, only to remount and slip off again a few meters later.

By the summit, MvdP had an eight-second gap on Jorgenson and a massive gap to the rest of the peloton. Jorgenson climbed the Koppenberg in just over two minutes, 19 seconds slower than Tadej Pogačar did in 2023.

In the 2021 Tour of Flanders, Mathieu van der Poel climbed the Koppenberg in one minute and 40 seconds at an average of 603 w. Though the times were significantly slower in 2024, we can certainly say that the conditions were slower as well. Like many riders, Lazkano lost minutes by walking on the 500-meter climb of the Koppenberg. No matter how strong he was, his race was over.

Koppenberg – Strava Top 10

Van der Poel (2021) : 1:40 at 603w (7.6w/kg)

Pogačar (2023) : 1:42 at ~520w (8w/kg)

Van der Poel (2024) : ~1:52 at 580w (7.3w/kg)

Lazkano (2024) : 3:45 with lots of walking

The Not-So-Thrilling Finale

Like so many races in the past few years, the race was over with 40 km to go. Jorgenson blew up trying to chase down Van der Poel, and the world champion soon had more than a minute on the next group of chasers.

It’s rumored that Van der Poel had a normalized power (NP) of more than 400 w at last year’s world championship road race Glasgow . That was one of the hardest and most chaotic races in recent memory, perfect for Van der Poel. The 29-year-old has a new MO: start attacking with 80-120 kilometers to go and keep on attacking until there’s no one left.

When up against the best riders in the world, such as peak-form Pogačar, Wout van Aert, or Pedersen, it usually takes hours of non-stop attacking to finally crack them. But in a race like the 2024 Tour of Flanders, where most of the favorites were missing or injured, it only took one serious attack for Van der Poel to get away.

While we don’t have the world champion’s power data, we do know that Mozzato averaged 42 kph for the final hour of the race. That means that Van der Poel averaged ~43 kph solo…for an hour…five hours and 5,000+ kilojoules deep into the race…on a wet course that included the Taaienberg, Oude Kruisberg, Oude Kwaremont, and Paterberg in the finale.

2024 Tour of Flanders – Final 42km

Van der Poel (solo): 58:59 at ~43 kph

Mozzato (chase group): 1:00:01 at NP 321w

The world champion lifted his bike in the air at the finish line, winning his third Tour of Flanders in just five years. The chase groups were in a washing machine for the last 45 km, and ultimately, a group of 10 came into the final kilometer to contest the podium.

To almost everyone’s surprise, Luca Mozzato came out of the wheels to finish second at the Tour of Flanders, the best result of his career. Nils Politt finished third after Michael Matthews was relegated for a sprint deviation . After six hours of hanging onto the front group, Mozzato timed his sprint perfectly to take the second step on the podium.

After six hours of full gas racing, everyone was sprinting on dead legs. Mozzato only had to hold 900w for a few seconds to sprint onto the podium.
