A Day in Gyumri: A Guide to Armenia’s Second City

Gyumri, Armenia’s second city, is absent from most travelers’ itineraries. Admittedly, it wasn’t on mine until I realized I had an extra free day in the country. But I’m glad I went, as a walk around Gyumri is like stepping back into the 19th century. In this Gyumri guide, we’ll go over the top highlights in the city center along with nearby sites you shouldn’t miss, like the unique Black Fortress and the tranquil Marmashen Monastery.

With its origins dating back thousands of years to the Urartu period , Gyumri’s history is as old as Yerevan’s. Later, the city would be an important stronghold for the Persians, who took control in the 1500s and ruled for the next 300 years.

But much of Gyumri’s prominent architecture was built in the 19th century while the region was ruled by the Russian Empire. At the time, the city was called Alexandropole after Tsar Nicholas I’s wife, Alexandra Fyodorovna. Later during the Soviet era, the city changed its name again to Leninakan.

But few buildings from this era remain standing, as the concrete constructions couldn’t withstand the devastating earthquake of 1988. To this day, the city is still recovering, and evidence of the disaster can be seen on just about every block. Walking around Gyumri today, the contrast between the elegant black stone buildings and ruined apartment blocks is rather striking.

Central Gyumri can easily be explored independently. However, if you’re also hoping to visit some sites on the outskirts of town, such as the Black Fortress and Marmashen Monastery, it’s best to take a tour. Learn more below .

A Central Gyumri Guide

Central Gyumri is laidback and very walkable. The locations featured below are by no means all there is to see in Gyumri. But for those visiting as a day trip from Yerevan and who also want to see the Black Fortress and Marmashen Monastery, these central Gyumri locations are just about all you’d be able to fit into a single day.

Church of the Holy Savior

Our first stop for the day was Church of the Holy Savior, located on the southern side of the central Vartanants Square. One of the tallest buildings still standing in Gyumri, the church was consecrated in 1873.

On either side of it were a Greek Orthodox and a Catholic church, but local residents felt that an Armenian Apostolic Church ought to tower over the others. Therefore, many devout locals even chipped in for construction fees!

Designed by architect Tadeos Andikyan, the church’s style was influenced by the Cathedral of Ani, the largest building of the ancient Armenian capital (now just on the other side of the border in Turkey).

The Church of the Holy Savior was severely damaged by the 1988 earthquake which struck the city. But if it weren’t for the ruined original dome on display in the courtyard, first-time visitors would be none the wiser. 

The renovators have done an excellent job repairing the church while also maintaining its distinct 19th-century appearance.

Stepping inside, however, reveals an entirely different situation. The interior is far from complete, and still full of scaffolding, construction materials and dust. Most of the effort thus far seems to have been put into restoring the artwork around the new dome.

Considering how the Soviets used this building as a concert hall, it’s likely that the Church of the Holy Savior hasn’t seen any religious activity since the 1930s. Its eventual reopening then, will surely be a major event.

Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God (Our Lady of Seven Wounds)

Just on the opposite side of Vartanants Square, we visited the Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God, also locally known as ‘Our Lady of Seven Wounds.’ Constructed between 1873 and 1884, the cruciform-shaped church is home to the Diocese of Shirak Province.

Notably, this was one of the only cathedrals in Gyumri to remain active during Soviet rule.

While the cathedral belongs to the Armenian Apostolic Church, the interior artwork bears resemblance to those of both Russian Orthodox and Catholic churches. 

Perhaps the multitude of styles were incorporated into the church because this was the only place where different Christian sects could pray.

The smaller domes that fell off in the 1988 earthquake are now placed outside. Overall, though, this church seems to be much better off than the Church of the Holy Savior.

Rizhkov Street

Just next to the church is the entrance to Rizhkov Street, Gyumri’s main pedestrian avenue and the city’s answer to Yerevan’s Northern Avenue . It’s named after Nikolai Rizhkhov, a former Soviet official who assisted with the post-1988 earthquake recovery.

This is where locals gather at restaurants on weekends or come to do their shopping. During lunchtime, I enjoyed some open-air seating outside an organic restaurant that conveniently had an English menu.

While most of the avenue is in pristine condition, some of the buildings have been left untouched since 1988, which makes for a remarkable contrast.

Walking the Streets

We continued walking the streets of central Gyumri, which I found to be a charming and laidback little city full of interesting architecture. While we didn’t have time to stop in any, Gyumri is home to a number of ‘house museums’ of famous poets, artists and actors. 

The Museum of Urban Life and National Architecture is also considered to be one of the city’s main highlights. But as we had two stops out of town on our itinerary, time wouldn’t allow for a visit. 

Speaking of architecture, one thing many of Gyumri’s classical buildings have in common is their color. In contrast to the ‘Pink City’ of Yerevan, Gyumri’s buildings are largely black. Most of the stone has been sourced from a nearby black tufa quarry to the west of town.

A walk around Gyumri provides an interesting glimpse into how Armenia would’ve looked in the 19th century, as many of the city’s most prominent structures date back to that time.  And with relatively little traffic, exploring the city on foot is a pleasure.

We also took a walk through Gyumri Central Park, established in the 1920s. Supposedly, Alexander Tamanian , the mastermind behind the urban layout and architecture of Yerevan, also oversaw some of the development of Gyumri. 

While not explicitly stated, perhaps he had a role in planning the large park, as he was clearly a fan of urban green spaces.

Though the park appears clean and well-maintained, certain areas offer morbid views of the disaster from which Armenia’s second city is still trying to recover.

The 1988 Earthquake

As mentioned above, Gyumri was struck by a devastating earthquake on December 7, 1988. A huge number of people were killed in the 6.8-magnitude quake, with estimates ranging from 25,000 – 55,000.

Many shoddily built Soviet-era buildings completely collapsed, as they were constructed during the USSR’s ‘era of stagnation.’ And while restoration efforts are a work in progress, central Gyumri still has entire blocks that appear untouched since ’88.

Our guide took us on a walk around one of these blocks. Seeing as how the buildings here hadn’t totally collapsed, this district probably fared better than many. 

One multistory building at the end of the road was under reconstruction, though fixing up the rest of the block will seemingly take years. 

But why is it taking so long to recover from an earthquake that happened over 30 years ago? Considering how it occurred just a few years before the collapse of the Soviet Union, it’s likely that a newly independent Armenia lacked the funds for a thorough recovery. 

Come to think of it, even Yerevan’s hallmark  Cascade Complex remains unfinished!

Interestingly, one of the areas still in recovery is an apartment courtyard that has featured prominently in Armenian cinema. While the significance was lost on me, the Armenian travelers on my tour were delighted to see the familiar scene.

The Black Fortress

Locally known as Sev Berd, the Black Fortress is situated on a hill outside of town. It was constructed in 1837, the same year Tsar Nicholas I changed the city’s name to Alexandropol.

The city, just near the border with the Ottoman Empire, was strategically important for the Russians in their various wars against the Ottomans. And while the Black Fortress never underwent a siege, perhaps its existence dissuaded enemy forces from attacking at all.

Russia still has a military base in Gyumri today, just nearby the Black Fortress. Feelings on the Russian presence seem to be mixed, but some residents fear that were the Russians to leave, they’d be vulnerable to a Turkish invasion.

Currently, the fortress’s interior has been stylishly redesigned and it serves as an event center. In fact, a wedding reception party was just beginning as we were leaving. 

Thankfully, modern additions were tastefully carried out, with the original architecture and other details having been left intact.

We were given several minutes to explore inside. I went up to the second floor and walked around the long circular hallway that stretches around the entire structure, though most of the rooms appeared to be vacant. 

As with Yerevan, Gyumri also has a Mother Armenia statue and it’s not too far from the fortress. Supposedly, there were even underground tunnels connecting the fortress with the statue!

Outside, take note of the graffiti carvings along the structure. They were carved by Russian soldiers serving at Sev Berd, who made sure to inscribe their names and hometowns.

The Black Fortress many not contain any mysteries, nor did it ever see any fighting. Nevertheless, the structure is simply cool to look at, and it offers some great views of the city, too. It’s well worth a visit if you’re already in Gyumri.

Marmashen Monastery

It wouldn’t be a proper day trip in Armenia without a visit to at least one ancient monastery. So before our return to Yerevan, we stopped at Marmashen Monastery, a peaceful complex of churches which dates back to over a thousand years ago.

Before hiking down to the churches, we stopped at rather peculiar spring. Water only comes out if a person places their left hand over the faucet, while nothing comes out if they use the right! (Or perhaps it’s the reverse – I can’t remember.)

I didn’t get the Armenian explanation of our guide, but I looked over to see that the spring is solar-powered, while there’s a quote on the sign that reads: ‘Every wife is her husband’s water spring, No other man is allowed to drink its water.’

Today, there are three main structures standing at Marmashen Monastery. The largest of them, Katoghike, was built in the 10th century. The church features a domed hall with four pylons, while the western side contains a gavit sepulcher.

Nearby to the south is a similar church called Holy Mother of God – essentially a smaller recreation. To the north, meanwhile, is another smaller church with its roof now missing.

The churches were reconstructed and rebuilt in the 13th century, and then again in 1900. Additionally, the monastery complex is home to ruins of other churches which archaeologists believe are about as old as the ones still standing.

The foundations of one of these ruined churches can still be seen in front of Katoghike. Notably, the bottom platform is circular, reminding me of the unique Zvartnots Cathedral near Etchmiadzin. 

Our group stepped inside Katoghike Church for a bit to admire the details. The restoration work here was handled by an Italian-Armenian couple who meticulously recreated the look and feel of the original.

And then to my surprise, our tour guide suddenly walked to the center of the room and started singing some beautiful Armenian church music. The church’s excellent acoustics really enhanced the celestial music’s power.

Marmashen Monastery is situated on the left bank of the Akhurian River. And following the performance, many of us went over for a view of the water, with the late afternoon sun making for perfect lighting conditions.

If you visit Marmashen Monastery, you may notice a cat wandering around the church grounds. A local man explained that as a kitten, all her siblings were killed by a fox, leaving her as the only survivor.

Despite the traumatic experience, the cat seems to be in good spirits. And she’s quite the attention seeker who’s more than happy to pose for a few photos.

Additional Info

Getting to Gyumri independently from Yerevan is easy enough. You can either take a marshrutka (minibus) or a train. Marshrutkas depart regularly from outside Zoravor Andranik metro station, and the ride lasts a few hours. The train, meanwhile, departs at 8am.

You can also get to Gyumri directly from Georgia, such as Tbilisi or other towns near the border.

While I’d been considering going there on my own, I also wanted to make sure to visit the Black Fortress and one of the main monasteries out of town. Even if I were to surpass the language barrier and strike a deal with a taxi driver in town, I estimated that the taxi fare to see the extra sites would come out to around the same as a group tour.

Therefore, I opted for the day tour with One Way Tour . They informed me that only an Armenian language tour would be available, but I didn’t mind as I was mainly concerned with transport.

Riding with the Armenian language tour was a unique experience. Unlike with the English/Russian tours, the driver was blasting Armenian folk songs (or at least modern renditions of them) for the entire day. 

It was rather annoying in the beginning, especially in the early morning, as I was hoping to do some reading on the bus.  But I got used to it by afternoon, and it was fun to see the passengers clapping and singing along.

While I couldn’t understand a thing the tour guide was saying all day, I was pleasantly surprised to find several English speakers on the tour with me. One woman was even kind enough to translate the important and interesting bits of information to me for most of the day!

For those who have the time, Gyumri seems like a laidback place to spend a night or two. As it has a railway station and numerous bus stops, it also serves as a convenient transport hub for getting around Armenia. Gyumri is a rather small city, but the closer you stay to Vartanants Square, the better.

For whatever reason, accommodation prices in Yerevan are considerably higher than those of nearby Tbilisi. This is in spite of most other things, like food and transport, costing the same amount. If budget isn’t an issue for you, then you should base yourself in the city center (within the circle or just outside of it).

Yerevan makes a great base from which to explore many other parts of Armenia. If you’re doing an extended stay in the city and want to save some money, staying outside the center will be fine. Just make sure that you’re within close distance of a metro station.

I stayed at Glide Hostel which I’d highly recommend for budget travelers. I opted for the private room with a private bathroom, but they also have some shared bathroom and dorm options available.

The guesthouse is located about 5 minutes on foot from Baregamutyun Station, the northernmost metro station. But you can still walk to the city center in about 30 minutes if the weather is nice. The staff were friendly and helpful, and a tasty breakfast was provided each morning.

12 Things to Do in Gyumri, Armenia’s Historic Second City

With its lofty black-and-apricot architecture, pottery studios and cute cafes, Armenia’s second-largest city, Gyumri, is the country’s creative capital and historical hub. My guide shows you all the best things to do in Gyumri , where to eat, and how to plan a trip.

It used to be known as the most beautiful city in Armenia. Then, in 1988, Gyumri was almost wiped off the map by the devastating Spitak Earthquake, which claimed an estimated 25,000-50,000 lives and flattened most of Gyumri’s heritage buildings.

Nowadays, most people associate the capital of northern Armenia’s Shirak Province with the immense tragedy of the earthquake and its aftermath. Gyumri is still rebuilding, that’s for sure – but it feels like an optimistic place.

A fresh crop of social enterprises, creative projects and cool cafes has brought new life to the city centre, while in the surrounding streets, restoration of Gyumri’s Art Nouveau houses and magnificent Armenian Apostolic churches churns along.

News of direct budget flights to Gyumri from Germany is a huge boon for tourism – something this city and region could really benefit from as people work to get back on their feet.

Many of the oldest buildings and streets (including a section of Abovyan Street, pictured above) are undergoing restorations – an economic boost and increased exposure for the city will surely help with this.

Located two hours north of Yerevan close to the Georgian border, Gyumri is a great place to stop off if you’re travelling between the two countries overland . It can also be visited as a day trip from Yerevan.

Ideally I recommend adding at least one or two nights in Gyumri to your Armenia itinerary .

Where to stay in Gyumri

Guest house in gyumri (⭐ 9.8).

This pleasant family run guesthouse is great value for money and my top choice for Gyumri. Private double rooms have modern furnishings, a shared bathroom, and access to a lovely outdoor sitting area.

Hrach and his daughter Ayda are wonderful hosts that take an interest in all their guests. During our stay, they plied us with homemade alcohol and freshly picked cherries, and even drove us to the bus station on our way out of town.

Villa Kars (⭐ 9.1)

This boutique hotel is one of the finest in all of Armenia. Set in a restored Art Nouveau building, it features 15 rooms clustered around a leafy courtyard. Each of the cosy wood and tuff stone suites is finished with Armenian carpets, handicrafts and antiques sourced from the area.

Villa Kars is operated by the Family Care Foundation , a community development NGO that also runs the Spitak Ceramics School (you can buy their gorgeous tableware in Gyumri and at their sister hotel/ shop in Yerevan ).

12 things to do in Gyumri

Here are the best things to do in Gyumri city, plus my Gyumri restaurant and cafe recommendations. You can quite easily see everything mentioned here in a day.

The city is small and compact so I recommend exploring on foot. I spent 3 full days in Gyumri on my last trip to Armenia and never got bored – in fact, I missed out on quite a few things!

I finally returned to Gyumri in 2023 to tick off some of the attractions I missed. I’m already planning a third visit!

1. Vartanants Square

If Yerevan is known as the Pink City, Gyumri should be called the Black City.

The first thing you notice about Gyumri is its striking architecture. Churches, municipal buildings and houses all look as if they’ve been blackened by fire.

The carbon colour is in fact the natural tone of volcanic tuff, stone quarried outside Gyumri and used to construct most of the older buildings. Orange-gold tuff stone is often used to detail windows, doors and arches. It’s a colour combination I’ve never seen before.

Vartanants Square (Freedom Square) is the anchor point of Gyumri. Many of the city’s most important and impressive buildings face onto the public space, including the City Hall and two of Gyumri’s most prominent churches. The square first opened in 1930 and has hosted many important events, including a mass by Pope Francis in 2016. A memorial dedicated to the Battle of Avarayr sits in the centre.

2. Amenaprkich (HOLY SAVIOUR’S CHURCH)

Occupying pride of place on the square, the Apostolic Holy Saviour’s Church was built between 1858 and 1872 based on the designs of the famous Armenian architect Tadeos Andikyan. Its form is based on the Cathedral of Ani.

The 1988 earthquake devastated the church and sent its bell tower tumbling to the ground. Look for the carved stones scattered in the grass around the church – these too fell from the facade.

The square at the back of the church is dotted with plinths, all inscribed with a clock face frozen on 11.41 – the exact time the earthquake struck that fateful winter morning. The striking pyramid-shaped monument is dedicated to the victims and the heroes of the earthquake.

Restoration work began on the church in 2002. At the time of my first Gyumri visit, reconstruction was still underway – but when I returned in 2023 I found the church was almost ready to be re-consecrated.

The doors were ajar, and I was allowed to go inside for a peek.

Inside the church, beautiful frescoes decorate some of the walls. An old church bell sits to the side, along with blown-up archival photos that show the church in the days following the earthquake.

3. Yot Verk Church

Yot Verk, the Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God, is the smaller of two churches that sit on Vartanants Square. Constructed from charcoal-coloured tuft, it serves as the seat for the Diocese of Shirak, the local wing of Armenia’s Apostolic Church.

Yot Verk sustained major damage during the 1988 earthquake, but it was completely rebuilt and is a fully functioning church. Two hulking stone pyramids that once topped the church’s steeples but fell during the earthquake now sit in the front yard. I think the decision to keep these is a beautiful and poignant tribute to the city’s resilience.

A thick grove of cherry trees shades the church from the square. A great time to visit is on Sunday mornings, when half of Gyumri, it seems, turns out for mass.

4. Sev Berd (The Black Fortress)

Sev Berd is one of the most curious military structures I’ve ever visited. Made of black and apricot tuff, the fortress is a perfectly round circle with small external openings and one access point via a drawbridge.

It was built by the Russian Imperialists who ruled Gyumri (then known as Alexandropol) in the aftermath of the Russo-Turkish War in the 1820s. Barely 8km from the Turkish border, its hilltop location was highly strategic.

Russian forces still have a presence in Gyumri even today, and their army base is a stone’s throw from Sev Berd. But the fortification itself is no longer used for military purposes.

After a period of abandonment, private owners recently re-opened it as an entertainment space and a hotel. That’s right, it’s got a stage, a sound system and everything!

It’s usually closed during the day, but there is a caretaker on the property who will be happy to let you inside for a look.

Underneath the main stage, a ramp leads to a subterranean museum where photographs of old Alexandrapol and its resident Russian royals are displayed. You can also see the original well that troops used to access groundwater.

5. Mother Armenia

Next door to Sev Berd lies Gyumri’s Victory Park and its iconic Mother Armenia monument. These statues are a common sight throughout the former Soviet republics – Yerevan and Tbilisi have their own versions.

Gyumri’s matron was sculpted from bronze in 1975 as a tribute to the Soviet victory in WWII. Mother Armenia boldly raises one arm skyward while holding an ear of wheat in her hand. It’s no accident that she has her back turned to neighbouring Turkey.

A huge concrete staircase and fountain complex not dissimilar to Yerevan’s Cascade unfurls like a carpet at Mother Armenia’s feet. The memorial continues at the bottom of the stairs with gardens and stone blocks inscribed with the names of major WWII battles in Cyrillic.

6. Gyumri WWII Memorial

At the base of Mother Armenia there is a second Soviet-era monument. This one is dedicated to the Great Patriotic War, better known as WWII.

The monument is inscribed with the dates 1941-45, a reference to the years of the Eastern Front when the USSR mobilised against Germany. It is a rather simple ensemble with a single fist emerging from the stone platform.

7. Gyumri Market (Gyumri Shuka)

Along with the GUM Market in Yerevan and the Dezerter Bazaar in Tbilisi , Gyumri’s Shuka is a cornucopia of local produce. When we visited in summer, it was all about the stone fruit: peaches, apricots, cherries and wild plums, plus juicy berries and figs.

One thing that never goes out of season are aromatic spices sold by the kilo.

Other stalls grind coffee beans to order, and sell slabs of basturma (cured meat), huge wheels of white cheese, and sheets of pale, fibrous mushrooms. Stallholders are outgoing and happy to pose for a photo while handing out samples of candied fruits and nuts.

The market is held daily between 9am and 6pm.

8. Rijkov Street & Kumayri Historic District

Before it fell under the rule of Russian Imperialists, Gyumri was known as Kumayri. The Historic District now takes this name, and represents the oldest part of the city.

Kumayri Historic District stretches across several dozen city blocks to the north-east and north-west of Vartanants Square. Pedestrianised Abovyan Street has some particularly magnificent facades.

The area is comprised of approximately 1,500 buildings in total, some dating back to the late 18th century. Houses subscribe to ‘Armenian Belle Epoque’, an elegant European style of architecture preferred by their craftsmen and merchant benefactors.

This area suffered serious damage during the earthquake and reconstruction is still an ongoing process 30 years on. Many of the buildings remain boarded up – a great shame considering their heritage value.

Built in 1898, the Old Alexandrapol Brewery on Jivani Street was one of the first buildings to be restored and now houses a functioning beer factory. Tours of the interior, which features 8-metre-deep underground cellars, are available on weekdays by appointment.

Opposite the Brewery on the corner of Gorki Street, another grand tuff building (pictured above) has been lovingly restored. It reopened as a restaurant, Florence, in 2019 (more information in the next section).

9. Old Hospital Ruins

Two blocks east of Jivani Street, you can see a confronting reminder of the 1988 earthquake up close. Hidden in dense forest behind the new Spitak Hospital, Gyumri’s old hospital was all but flattened by the tremors. The inside has been gutted, but the ivory-coloured bones of one wing are still standing today.

If you look closely, you can see the original Soviet hammer and sickle insignia mounted above the building’s main entryway.

We entered the Old Hospital area off the main street via the new hospital driveway. No one stopped or questioned us, and there is no signage to designate private property, so I assume people are free to walk through the complex as they wish. Please take care and be respectful.

10. The Iron Fountain

The Gyumri Iron Fountain is located 4.5km north from the centre of town. For those interested in Soviet-era monuments and architecture, it is absolutely worth the short taxi ride.

Completed in 1982 by the architect Artur Tarkhanyan, the Iron Fountain sits forlornly in the middle of an empty lot with only a few industrial ruins nearby. This wasn’t always the case: When it was built, the fountain was the centrepiece for Gyumri’s Polytechnic University.

The campus was flattened by the earthquake in 1988, but the Iron Fountain lived up to its name and survived.

This has to be one of the most unusual pieces of architecture I have ever seen. From a narrow base, the fountain’s iron wings fan up and out before narrowing again to form a crown shape at the top.

Before seeing it in person, I found lots of images of the fountain online and always wondered where the water came from. Looking up close, you can see rings of rusted pipes around the perimeter of the concrete base. These must have sprayed water up onto the iron sculpture, creating interesting flow patterns as it dripped back down and hit the rounded ends of the metal pieces.

If you walk around the fountain you can see the wonderful shadow patterns the iron pieces throw onto the concrete. It really is a very beautiful and considered sculpture that plays with the natural elements.

11. Other Soviet-era monuments

Apart from Mother Armenia herself, Gyumri is home to dozens of other Soviet monuments. We stumbled on the sculpture pictured above while walking through Gyumri’s Central Park.

12. Gyumri house museums

I love the concept of ‘house museums’, small institutions set up in the former homes or workshops of famous citizens and staffed by passionate devotees. Even though Gyumri’s are are geared towards local tourists and don’t have much information in English, some are worth a visit just for the atmosphere.

My favourite is the Museum-Gallery of the Aslamazyan Sisters (pictured above). Two sisters born in a village near Gyumri, Mariam and Yeranuhi were prolific painters and sculptors who were given special permission to travel outside the Soviet Union and literally paint what they saw.

Back home in Armenia, their exhibition openings were treated as diplomatic events. Vibrant canvases and ceramics depicting faces and scenes from India, East Asia and Latin America must have shaped perceptions of the outside world among their compatriots. Every one of the works displayed in their Museum is colourful and joyous – some even call Mariam Aslamazyan Armenia’s answer to Frida Kahlo!

The Aslamazyan Museum is open from 10.30am-5pm (closed Mondays).

We also visited the Mher Mkrtchyan Museum (11am-5pm, closed Mondays), which dedicated to an Armenian film star who was born in Gyumri. There aren’t any English didactics to describe the collection of theatre props and memorabilia, but staff can give you a brief narration.

The third museum worth seeing in Gyumri is the Museum of National Architecture and Urban Life (11am-5pm, closed Mondays). It explores the traditional trades of Alexandropol: woodworking, embroidery, tin work. Next door, a sculpture gallery displays works by Sergei Merkurov, the artist who famously cast Lenin’s death mask.

Where to eat and drink in Gyumri

Ponchik Monchik

A local institution, Ponchik Monchik Gyumri is famous for its ponchik (Armenian donuts). At first we thought these were solid pastries – but they’re actually hollow (although some versions are stuffed with filling).

At Ponchik Monchik, the ultra-thin shell of puffed dough is filled with a small amount of either vanilla, Nutella or jam before being dusted with icing sugar. Served warm, ponchik are light and yummy, and a perfect accompaniment to the house coffee, which I must say is excellent.

Aside from sweets, they also have an extensive menu of Armenian mains and entrees. We ate here no fewer than three times during our stay and liked everything we ordered.

Ponchik Monchik has two branches in Gyumri – one on the main square, and another north of Peace Circle Park (we preferred the latter because it’s more spacious). Open from 10.30am daily.

Aregak Bakery and Cafe

Aregak Bakery is located on the pedestrianised Rijkov Street and my top choice for a light breakfast in Gyumri. A social enterprise cafe run by Armenian Caritas and Emili, Aregak doubles as a training restaurant and offers employment opportunities to disabled youth and their mothers.

Aside from the more-than-worthy social mission, Aregak serves outstanding Italian-style coffee and delicious French and Armenian pastries and breads. Open from 9am daily.

Cherkezi Dzor (Fish Restaurant)

Known simply as ‘Fish Restaurant’, this fish farm slash restaurant slash brewpub is one of Gyumri’s main attractions. Located on a massive piece of land near the army base, guests sit in wooden cabins set around a large fish pond.

It was raining nonstop on our last night in Gyumri, but we braved it and went to Cherkezi Dzor for dinner. Their pelmeni dumplings are the best I’ve ever tasted – hands down. We also loved the trout fillets wrapped in crispy lavash, and the trout meatballs (everything is trout or sturgeon related so if you don’t eat fish, maybe give this one a miss!). English menus are available, but I recommend looking at the photo menu online before you go.

The owner of our guesthouse told us Russian tourists come to Gyumri just to eat here! It’s open until 11pm daily.

Florence Restaurant Gyumri

Newly opened in 2019, Florence is housed in a heritage building opposite the Gyumri brewery. The decor is swish, and the branding is on-point.

The menu features both Armenian and Italian dishes, and some other meals that defy categorisation. This is by far the most expensive restaurant we ate at in Gyumri, and to be honest, we felt it was a little overpriced. Nevertheless, service is friendly and attentive, and we really enjoyed the two mains we ordered for lunch – chicken risotto (perfectly cooked) and plump Armenian tolma .

Florence is open from 10am until midnight daily.

Kilikia Bistro

We happened on this workers-style cafe by accident, but it turned out to be a terrific place for a budget meal. Kebabs are grilled fresh, lavash is baked on demand, and they do a nice Greek salad. There’s no English menu, but staff are extremely helpful, even during the lunchtime rush.

Herbs & Honey

This Instagram-worthy cafe specialises in tea made from wild mountain herbs collected from northern Armenia.

How to get to Gyumri

Yerevan to gyumri.

By train: There are four daily passenger trains to Gyumri from Yerevan at 7.55am, 2.25pm, 2.35pm and 6.25pm. The journey time is just over 3 hours and the fare is 1,400 AMD. On weekends there are additional express trains from Yerevan taking 2 hours to reach Gyumri and costing 2,500 AMD. Check times and fares here on T-Armenia .

By bus (marshrutka): Direct vans to Gyumri depart from Yerevan’s Southern Bus Station approximately every 60 minutes between 10am and 6pm daily. The journey time is 2.5-3 hours and the fare is 1,500 AMD.

Georgia to Gyumri

By train: The overnight train from Tbilisi to Yerevan makes a stop in Gyumri in the early hours of the morning. Throughout 2023, trains depart every second day of the month. The journey time is 8 hours, and tickets start from 9,300 AMD.

By marshrutka: There are no direct marshrutka vans from Tbilisi to Gyumri, so you’ll need to transit through either Yerevan or Vanadzor first. There are at least 4 daily bus services from Vanadzor to Gyumri taking 90 minutes and costing 800 AMD.

Alternatively, there might be a direct van to Gyumri from Akhaltsikhe in southern Georgia (the jumping off point for Vardzia ). We travelled this route the last time we visited in summer – but note that vans often stop running during the winter low season.

Normally there is one daily marshrutka leaving Akhaltsikhe at 7am and arriving in Gyumri just before midday. Tickets cost 40 GEL. It is ESSENTIAL to double-check times locally in Akhaltsikhe as sometimes there is no van service. If this is the case, an alternative option is to travel to Akhalkalaki then take a taxi/van from there.

Day trip to Gyumri from Yerevan

This 8-hour trip to Gyumri departs Yerevan daily and includes transportation by train, lunch, and an English-speaking guide. If you’re looking for a hassle-free way to visit Gyumri from Yerevan, it’s great value for money.

Onward travel from Gyumri

I highly recommend travelling west from Gyumri into the Debed Canyon area and Vanadzor before travelling down to Lake Sevan and then on to Yerevan. This is the route we chose for our second trip to Armenia and we loved every minute of it!

There are 4 marshrutky from Gyumri Central Bus Station to Vanadzor departing at 10am, 1pm, 2pm and 4.30pm daily (double check the schedule here ). Tickets cost 800 AMD per person, and the trip takes around 90 minutes. Shared and private taxis are available on demand at the bus station in Gyumri and cost approximately 12,000 AMD per car or 3,000 AMD per seat.

If you’ve just come from Yerevan and you want to travel from Gyumri into Georgia , the most straightforward option is to take the daily direct van from Gyumri to Akhaltsikhe. It leaves at 10am and costs 4,000 AMD per person.

Hi, just as an update for anyone planning the sames as us, we’re currently in Akhaltsikhe and wanted to get the bus to Gyumri tomorrow. Just went to the bus station who rang to book our tickets, and then told us there is no bus anymore. Our only option is to go to Akhalkalaki and get a taxi.

Thanks Zillah – this does happen unfortunately. The van was running a few months ago when I was there, but for whatever reason the service stops and starts without much notice.

Venice tests a 5-euro fee for day-trippers as the city grapples with overtourism

VENICE, Italy — Under the gaze of the world's media, the fragile lagoon city of Venice launched a pilot program Thursday to charge day-trippers a 5-euro (around $5.35) entry fee that authorities hope will discourage visitors from arriving on peak days and make the city more livable for its dwindling residents.

Visitors arriving at Venice's main train station were greeted with large signs listing the 29 dates through July of the plan's test phase that also designated separate entrances for tourists, and residents, students and workers.

Venice will limit tour groups to 25 people and ban loudspeakers to control tourism

"We need to find a new balance between the tourists and residents,'' said Simone Venturini, the city's top tourism official. "We need to safeguard the spaces of the residents, of course, and we need to discourage the arrival of day-trippers on some particular days."

Not all residents, however, are persuaded of the efficacy of the new system in dissuading mass tourism , insisting that only a resurgence in the population will restore balance to a city where narrow alleyways and water buses are often clogged with tourists.

Hundreds of Venetians protested against the program, marching festively though the city's main bus terminal behind banners reading "No to Tickets, Yes to Services and Housing." Protesters scuffled briefly with police with riot gear who blocked them from entering the city, before changing course and entering over another bridge escorted by plainclothes police. The demonstration wrapped up peacefully in a piazza.

Tourists arriving at the main station encountered almost as many journalists as stewards on hand to politely guide anyone unaware of the new requirements through the process of downloading the QR code to pay the fee.

Arianna Cecilia, a tourist from Rome visiting Venice for the first time, said she thought it was "strange" to have to pay to enter a city in her native country, and be funneled through separate entrance ways for tourists. She and her boyfriend were staying in nearby Treviso, and so downloaded the QR code as required, but she was still caught off-guard while soaking in her first view ever of Venice's canals by the sight of the entrance signs and her boyfriend telling her to get out the ticket.

On the other side of the entrance ways, workers in yellow vests carried out random checks at the train station. Transgressors faces fines of 50 to 300 euros ($53 to $320), but officials said "common sense" was being applied for the launch.

The requirement applies only for people arriving between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Outside of those hours, access is free and unchecked.

Venice has long suffered under the pressure of overtourism, and officials hope that the pilot project can help provide more exact figures to better manage the phenomenon.

The city can track the number of hotel visitors, which last year numbered 4.6 million and is down 16% from pre-pandemic highs. But the number of day visitors, which make up the majority of the crowds in Venice, could only be estimated until recently.

A Smart Control Room set up during the pandemic has been tracking arrivals from cellphone data, roughly confirming pre-pandemic estimates of 25 million to 30 million arrivals a year, said Michele Zuin, the city's top economic official. That includes both day-trippers and overnight guests.

But Zuin said the data is incomplete.

"It's clear we will get more reliable data from the contribution" being paid by day-trippers, he said.

Venturini said the city is strained when the number of day-trippers reaches 30,000 to 40,000. On peak days, local police set up one-way traffic for pedestrians to keep the crowds moving.

Residents opposing the day-tripper tax insist that the solution to Venice's woes are to boost the resident population and the services they need, limiting short-term rentals to make available more housing and attract families back from the mainland.

Last year, Venice passed a telling milestone when the number of tourist beds exceeded for the first time the number of official residents, which is now below 50,000 in the historic center with its picturesque canals.

"Putting a ticket to enter a city will not decrease not even by one single unit the number of visitors that are coming,'' said Tommaso Cacciari, an activist who organized a protest Thursday against the measure.

"You pay a ticket to take the metro, to go to a museum, an amusement park. You don't pay a ticket to enter a city. This is the last symbolic step of a project of an idea of this municipal administration to kick residents out of Venice," he said.

Venice officials expected paid day-tripper arrivals Thursday to reach about 10,000. More than 70,000 others had downloaded a QR code denoting an exemption, including to work in Venice or as a resident of the Veneto region. Hotels in Venice, including in mainland districts like Marghera or Mestre, should provide a QR code attesting to their stay, which includes a hotel tax.

Venturini, the tourist official, said that interest in Venice's pilot program has been keen from other places suffering from mass tourism, including other Italian art cities, and municipalities abroad such as Barcelona, Spain, and Amsterdam.

But Marina Rodino, who has lived in Venice for 30 years, doesn't see the fee as the cure-all. Neighboring apartments in her residential building near the famed Rialto Bridge once inhabited by families are now short-term apartment rentals.

The corner butcher shop closed. Yet she noted that the new entrance fee requirement will still allow young people to flood the city in the evening for the traditional aperitivo, which can grow rowdy.

She was passing out mock European Union passports for "Venice, Open City," underlining the irony of the new system, and challenging its legal standing with citations from the Italian Constitution guaranteeing its citizens the right to "move or reside freely in any part of the national territory."

"This is not a natural oasis. This is not a museum. It is not Pompeii. It is a city, where we need to fight so the houses are inhabited by families, and stores reopen. That is what would counter this wild tourism,'' Rodino said.

Taylor Swift shares big video hint that the 'Eras Tour' may be changing

Taylor Swift is taking fans behind the scenes of her “Eras Tour” with a series of clips, and Swifties now suspect there’s a hint as to changes coming to the world-renowned show.

Days after releasing her newest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” Swift posted another YouTube Short video with her hit single “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone,” playing over videos of her and her dancers rehearsing for the tour. But there’s one moment in the montage that has fans doing what they do best: speculating.

Fans will recognize many of the scenes being practiced, such as Swift's iconic entrance from the ground, her performance of "Lavender Haze" in a coat surrounded by clouds, playing "Champagne Problems" seated at a moss-covered piano and more. But one clip, in which Swift stands in the middle of a stage with her dancers lined up behind her wearing top hats and holding canes, did not appear in the original "Eras Tour."

The “Eras Tour” is a three-hour, 15-minute concert in which Swift performs songs from all of her albums since her 2006 self-titled debut record. Many — including the TODAY.com staff — have speculated whether or not the pop star would integrate “Tortured Poets Department” as another era in the show.

All will be (hopefully) be revealed when the tour begins again in Paris on May 9.

This is the second YouTube Short Swift has posted since the latest album release. On April 19, she shared glimpses of her personal life , again set to the tune of “Fortnight.”

In that compilation, her boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce, makes appearances with the star. The videos are in collaboration with YouTube, encouraging users to post their own “14 snippets” of their lives set to the same song.

RBC Heritage: Final round suspended due to darkness, Monday finish underway at Harbour Town

Scheffler, chasing his fourth PGA TOUR win in five starts, authored a signature moment in the waning twilight Sunday, recovering from a hooked 4-iron second shot on the par-4 15th with a sorcerous wedge to 11 feet that he converted for an unlikely par to maintain a five-stroke lead over Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, J.T. Poston and Sahith Theegala.

Scheffler, chasing his fourth PGA TOUR win in five starts, stood 20 under for the tournament as the final round was suspended due to darkness at 7:45 p.m. Sunday, with nine players yet to complete the final round on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

This will be the second unscheduled Monday finish on the PGA TOUR this season and first since the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, won by Austin Eckroat. The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, won by Wyndham Clark, was shortened to 54 holes after play was unable to be contested on Sunday and Monday.

Sunday’s play at Harbour Town was initially suspended at 4:28 p.m. due to lightning in the area. The final pairing of Scheffler and Sepp Straka had completed 11 holes at the time. Players were removed from the course, with the delay ultimately lasting 2 hours and 32 minutes before play resumed at 7 p.m.

Play was suspended at 4:28 p.m. local time, with leader Scottie Scheffler playing the 12th hole. Players were taken off the course at the time of suspension.

Scheffler began the final round at 16 under, one stroke clear of Sepp Straka, and the world No. 1 turned in 3-under 33 with a chip-in eagle at the par-5 second, a two-putt birdie at the par-5 fifth and seven pars. Scheffler stood 19 under, four strokes clear of the field at the time of delay. Seven players stood 15 under.

“We were hoping to play through this; we felt like we had another 25 minutes left of this heavy rain and were then going to get a break on the back end,” said Mark Dusbabek, the PGA TOUR’s senior director lead TV Rules & Video Analyst, on the CBS broadcast. “We had lightning unfortunately pop up 4 miles away; just suddenly caught us in, so we had to stop play for this. We’re going to see how things go here and make a decision.

"The course was not unplayable. It wasn't because of the rain. It was just because the lightning popped up."

The final round of the RBC Heritage is poised to deliver fans a fantastic finish, but that might not come without a little bit of weather late in the day.

After the first three rounds of tournament golf at Harbour Town Golf Links were accompanied by sunshine and temperatures ranging from the upper 70s into the mid-80s, Sunday could bring golfers a different challenge to navigate as the tournament comes to a close.

According to the forecast, a cold front will be slowly moving southward into the Hilton Head Island area on Sunday, increasing the chances for showers and a few thunderstorms as play gets into the early to mid-afternoon hours and continuing into the evening hours. Storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rainfall. Otherwise, Sunday morning will remain dry with temperatures warming into the mid to upper 70s before falling into the 60s late in the day. Light wind Sunday morning will increase out of the north 10-15 gusting to 20-25 mph late in the day.

The final pairing of the day, Scottie Scheffler and Sepp Straka, are set to tee off at 1:55 p.m. ET. Scheffler holds a one-stroke lead at 16-under.

Proud mom Madonna says her kids have put ‘blood, sweat and tears’ into Celebration Tour performances

Madonna is proud of her children for working hard as performers in her ongoing Celebration Tour. 

“I think what my children learned the most in this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you want to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them,” the pop superstar, 65, said in an interview with W magazine published Wednesday. 

“And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears.”

As Madonna prepared to hit the road for the concert series — a spectacle that honors her four decades in the spotlight — she tapped her four youngest kids, David, 18, Mercy, also 18, plus 11-year-old twins Stella and Estere, to showcase their unique talents on stage. 

“Because the Celebration Tour is a retrospective of my life, I thought it made perfect sense to include all of my children still living with me in the show; they all dance and play musical instruments, and have been doing so for years,” the “Ray of Light” singer told the publication. 

“David has played guitar since he was a child. Mercy has played piano since she was 8 and she’s been classically trained most of her life. Eventually, when I adopted the twins, they started to play piano and dance as well.”

Madonna noted that there is “always an endless parade of dancing and [performing arts] teachers coming and going in our house,” so it only made sense to give her children a bigger platform to shine on the Celebration Tour.

A show highlight for the Grammy winner is when daughter Mercy accompanies her on piano during a powerful rendition of her 1993 ballad “Bad Girl.”

“I saw a strange, poetic juxtaposition of hedonism and exploration emerging into the light of Mercy, sitting stoically at her grand piano playing Chopin as she beckoned me towards her, making me think about the choices I have made in my life,” Madonna said, explaining how that specific moment came to be.

“Singing ‘Bad Girl’ was kind of my confession to her, and I felt we had an unspoken understanding of what was happening.”

Meanwhile, David duets with his mom on “Mother and Father” from her 2003 album, “American Life.” 

“‘Mother and Father’ is one of my favorite moments in the show because it gave me a chance to not only honor my mother and her memory but also to honor David’s mother and her memory,” she said of the young creative, whom she adopted from Malawi in 2006. 

“He has always wanted to sing and play guitar. He loves being on stage — this is nothing new. Much of the show is about motherhood, family, and the importance of that in my artistic life.”

As for Stella and Estere, the girls dance their hearts out when Madonna sings her 2000 smash “Don’t Tell Me,” and also during a section in the show that pays homage to ballroom and the art of vogueing. 

“While Estere was learning how to DJ, she became interested in ballroom competitions. Just by luck, one of my choreographer’s assistants, Ivy Mugler, has her own ballroom house called House of Mugler,” she says of how the two became interested in that sect of dance. 

“She started taking Estere aside during rehearsals to another room—and within a couple of weeks she was doing death drops and spins and surprising us with her ability. So, of course we had to turn that section of the show into Estere’s Ball.”

Madonna is also mom to Lourdes “Lola” Leon, 27 — whom she shares with ex Carlos Leon — and Rocco Ritchie, 23 — whom she shares with ex-husband Guy Ritchie. Her eldest have also participated in her tours, including 2012’s MDNA Tour, for which Lourdes worked in the wardrobe department while Rocco performed on stage. 

“I have always been blessed with children who are interested in music, dance and art. Starting from the top with Lola, who was not only an incredible ballet dancer and a rhythmic gymnast, she also switches to musical theater and contemporary dance,” she said. 

The eternal hitmaker acknowledged that “nothing brings [her] more happiness” than collaborating with her kids. 

“It would be boring if they were just traveling from hotel to hotel, and occasionally coming to watch the show,” she elaborated. “Of course, I am their mother so sometimes we get on each other’s nerves. We are a family of artists but we are also a family, and that’s what happens.”

The Celebration Tour’s next stop is Friday in Mexico City, followed by a final — and free — show in Rio de Janeiro on May 4.

2024 Zurich Classic leaderboard, scores: Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry among leaders after Round 1

Mcilroy and lowry headline a crowded leaderboard as the competition moves to foursomes for friday.

There aren't many firsts left for Rory McIlroy to achieve in his PGA Tour career, but he checked one off the list Thursday at TPC Louisiana. Making his debut appearance in the Zurich Classic, the 34-year-old looked like the seasoned veteran he is alongside Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry. The two fired an 11-under 61 in the four-ball format amid the windy afternoon conditions to sit with the teams of Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard, Aaron Rai and David Lipsky and Ben Kohles and Patton Kizzire atop the leaderboard after Round 1.

While this week marks McIlroy's first attempt at claiming the PGA Tour's annual team event, it also represents his 11th start of the year as he continues to play through some relative early season struggles. McIlroy had no issues in the first round as he drove the ball beautifully, struck towering iron shots and picked apart the par-72 layout in unison with Lowry.

"You know that you sort of need to get off to a good start, and thankfully we did," McIlroy said. "We were 4 under through 4, which was really nice to see, and from there you've got some momentum and you're just trying to keep it going. But for the most part today, we kept both balls in play. We were having two looks basically on every hole at birdie, and that's the way you need to play better ball. Everyone thinks it's maybe a bit more gung ho than that, but as long as you have two balls in play off the tee, two balls on the green, I think you're always going to do pretty well in this format."

The two began their days with four birdies out the gate and tacked on a couple more to turn in 6-under 30. A birdie on No. 10 was followed with a disappointing par on the par-5 11th, but that did nothing to dampen their spirits. McIlroy struck his best iron of the day into the 12th when he feathered an 8 iron against the wind and to tap-in distance.

Lowry picked him up on the very next hole with a birdie of his own to get the team to 9 under and added another on the difficult par-3 14th to get to double digits under par. With four holes remaining, the two appeared likely to overtake the clubhouse lead, but a couple middling pars to go along with one last birdie on the par-5 18th meant there will be four teams sleeping on the lead tonight before the competition transitions to foursomes on Friday.

The leaders

Outside McIlroy and Lowry, the top of the leaderboard is surprising, to say the least. Hubbard has notched a couple top 20s, a top five and has yet to miss a cut this season while Rai has been solid, but the rest of the lot haven't seen the weekend with much consistency. Hubbard's teammate, Brehm, has seven missed cuts in 11 starts. Rai's teammate, Lipsky, has missed eight cuts in 11 starts and is without a top 40. Kizzire has six missed cuts and a withdrawal in nine starts, and Kohles has six missed cuts and a withdrawal in 11 starts. Four-ball can hide deficiencies, but the same cannot be said for foursomes, which will be played Friday and Sunday. 

"Just like usual, we ham-and-egged it," Hubbard said. "I don't think either of us were feeling amazing about our games coming into the day, but we just feed off each other really well. We relax each other out there, and best ball is just a fun format. I didn't putt great last week, but he had a lot of holes where he snuggled it up there nice and close for par and it really freed me up. You just kind of get confidence that way, and I think even you watching me make some putts gave you confidence and you poured them in at the end."

Detry and MacIntyre got off to a dream start by playing their first four holes in 4 under. After hitting a lull, the two turned it on and carded six back-nine birdies to shoot 10-under 62. MacIntyre has the team experience from this past fall's Ryder Cup, while Detry has been enjoying a very solid 2024 campaign. The staying power of all these teams on this leaderboard is interesting given the volatility of foursomes, but the two Europeans should be up to the task.

I think it's about leaving each other to it," MacIntyre said regarding Friday's strategy. "We're both good players, both know what we're doing with the golf ball. It's just trusting each other. If I hit a good shot, you hit a good shot. If you hit a bad shot, don't say sorry, you're not meaning to do it. You just keep walking forward and keep trying to hit good shots and committing to them and see where we end up. Can't really do anything about it. It's difficult because you might not hit a 5-foot putt until the 17th hole. It's completely different. All you can do is try your best."

Let's roll with the 2022 champion at 10-1. Schauffele and Cantlay burned a ton of edges on Thursday but kept themselves in it with a late flurry of birdies. They now transition to foursomes for two of the next three days where they were dominant a year ago. In 2023, the two fired a 9-under 63 in Round 2 and a 6-under 66 in Round 4 in this format. If they card something similar in the mid 60s tomorrow, they should be in business heading into the weekend.
