How to Choose the Right Denman Brush for Your Curls

When it comes to curl definition, most of us are always looking for the best products to do the trick. One of the most important components to curl definition, is how your hair is styled fresh out of the shower. Some of us can get so caught up in all the conditioners and jellies, and we forget that the styling and detangling tools we use are just as important! One of the most popular styling tools in the curly world is the Denman brush – but there are a few things you need to know first to get the most out of this tool. 

What is a Denman brush?

Denman brushes are some of the most popular styling tools amongst us curlies. Turn on any natural hair tutorial, and it’s likely that the beauty guru is reaching for one. They’re credited often with giving your hair that extra curl definition you’re looking for. 

How should you use a Denman brush?

Please remember to use your Denman brush only while your hair is wet and saturated with a product that offers plenty of slip! You may want to fully detangle your hair with your fingers before you start styling with the Denman brush.

We are often told not to brush our hair at all as curlies, but when used correctly brushes and combs can be important tools in wet detangling, dry detangling, and styling curly hair. It’s crucial to understand which tools to use and how to use them correctly, otherwise you can cause breakage.

What’s the difference between different Denman Brushes?

There are many different Denman brushes with names like “D3” and “D31” so it can quickly get confusing – but one major difference is the amount of rows and bristles. Depending on your hair texture, length and density, the brush that will best suit your curls may vary. I’d recommend always keeping your receipt, just in case you need to try something different out!

Why do curlies modify their  Denman brushes?

Many curlies will remove every other row of pins and make other adjustments to their brush to better flow through the hair. This is a popular option for making your tools work best for your unique curls. If your brush is causing a lot of breakage and pain, it is not the brush for you.

What do the curl “Types” mean?

In this article I’ll be making recommendations based on NaturallyCurly’s Texture Typing System, which divides curl patterns into Type 2 waves, Type 3 curls, and Type 4 coils. If you don’t know your curl pattern, you can take our quiz . 

Curl pattern is only one element of your hair type, alongside other traits like density, porosity, width, and length. It can be a helpful starting point when you’re just getting to know your hair and the products that work well for you. 

For Type 4 Coily Hair

With a lot of curl can come a lot of work, especially when it comes to detangling. It’s important to use a Denman brush that has the rows and bristles spread out so your hair does not get caught or break off.

Try the D31 Original Styler 7 Row Denman Brush 

If you have tight coils I’d recommend the D31 Denman brush . Get it while you can, it sells out fast! The D31 brush has 7 rows of pins, which are all separated far apart. It allows your hair to flow through with ease. This brush really helps give each of your coils and curls definition without making you feel tender headed!

For Type 3 Curly Hair

For my Type 3 girls out there, you’re working with a lot of curl too!

Try the D31 or the Denman D41 9-Row Freeflow

The D31 Denman brush will also work just fine for you. However, if you are looking for something that will give your hair some extra umph, you can reach for the D41 too! It has two extra rows of pins that help clump your curls together in the best way. Keeping in theme with the D31, the pins are still far enough apart that it does the trick while allowing your hair to breathe.

For Type 2 Wavy Hair

I know my type 2 girls are always trying to get their waves and curls to look cohesive, at least I always am! 

Try the D3 Original Styler 7-Row

Because our hair tends to be a bit finer in texture, the closer the pins are on the brush, the more definition we’ll get. That’s why I’d recommend the D3 Classic Styling Brush for anyone with waves or loose curls. It’s a classic for a reason! All hair textures reach for this brush, while many curlies modify it to meet their needs.

Apply a Detangling Product

Section Your Hair

Section your hair and work through each section from root to tip, dampening your hair as needed. As a general rule, the tighter and denser your curls, the smaller your sections need to be and the slower you’ll need to work. 

You’ll need to be patient because detangling and styling your hair too quickly or without sectioning your locks will likely lead to breakage.

Turn the Bristles Upward

When you start styling your hair, turn the brush so that the pins face upward while you slide it along the length of your tresses. As you get close to the ends, turn the brush under, just like you would use a curling iron.

If you have wavy hair or loose curls, you could also try twirling your hair around the brush to form ringlets.

Finish your Style

Finally, once you’ve worked round your entire head, give your hair a scrunch to set the shape of your curls or ringlets. You can then use your fingers to break up curls or twist smaller sections of hair.

If your hair is type 2A to 3B, you could use a diffuser on your blow dryer to dry your hair or leave it to air dry. Finish your style by applying a light sealing oil like grapeseed oil on the ends. 

You can dry Type 3C to 4C hair naturally or use a hooded dryer and then finish with a rich sealing oil like black castor oil on the ends.

The Best Denman Brush for Type 2 Hair

Type 2 hair is looser than curly and coily hair, and getting your waves to clump together can be tricky. The D3 Classic Styling Brush is the original Denman styling brush with seven close-set rows of round-ended pins which make it excellent at detangling and defining your waves.

If the pins are too close together for your locks, try removing a row or two so your hair can pass between them more easily.

Its handle is finished by hand with custom-designed Italian cellulose acetate resin and is beautiful to look at. It's functional, too, doing a stellar job brushing and polishing your strands.

Y.S. Park is Aguirre's favorite brush for styling. It features both natural boar and heat-resistant nylon bristles for all your blowout needs and comes in different widths so you can find exactly what shape is best for your length. "It really depends on how dense your hair is when choosing one of these," shares the hairstylist. I have them all and use them for different hairstyles." A smaller diameter is typically better suited for short hair and a larger diameter for long hair.

"This is such a quality brush and gives you the best blowouts," she says. "It's super easy for anyone to use and provides professional results." With a mixture of blonde boar hair and carbon fiber nylon bristles (they look alike, so it's hard to spot the difference), you'll add shine and texture to your hair while getting the bounciness just right.

What to Look For in a Boar Bristle Brush

Of course we're talking boar bristles here, but plenty of brushes feature hybrid selections of boar and nylon bristles—a great thing for certain hair types. Nylon bristles are a bit stiffer, which makes them ideal for working through extra knotty or thick hair.

• Brush Shape

Like any other hair brush, boar bristle brushes come in a variety of shapes and sizes. "A boar bristle round brush is used to smooth, add volume, and add shine. It is best used with tension on the hair and with a blow dryer," shares hairstylist Katelyn Ellsworth .

A flat brush, meanwhile, can help add scalp stimulation and shine without damage. "Moving the brush from the scalp distributes the oils down the hair shaft, creating the perfect end result of soft shiny strands," she adds.

Boar bristle brushes are often expensive, but there are good reasons for that. Besides the fact that they're often handcrafted and generally take more effort to build than their synthetic counterparts, boar bristles aren't an unlimited resource—especially when they're being ethically sourced. "When choosing a brush, always consider the quality of the product," says Aguirre.

Is a Boar Bristle Brush Right for My Hair Type?

While boar bristle brushes are incredibly gentle and suitable for all hair types, certain people can reap the benefits more than others. "Using a boar bristle brush is great with finer hair. It allows you to get good tension without ripping the hair," shares Aguirre. If your hair is coarser, you'll want to make sure the brush is outfitted with reinforced bristles so you can receive the tension you need while still smoothing the cuticle. "The reinforcing bristles are typically nylon which will [also] help distribute your hair's natural oil," she adds.

The general consensus is that you should brush your hair twice a day: once in the morning and once at night. "Brushing regularly helps stimulate growth while increasing blood flow to your hair follicles," says Michael. "It also adds natural shine throughout your hair and removes impurities from the environment like dust and dirt."
