In view of the current situation of COVID-19 and to facilitate people-to-people exchanges, from 29 April  2023 (local time), Rapid Antigen Test (RAT, including Self-test kit) result or PCR test will both be acceptable for passengers flying from Denmark to China , and passengers can only travel to China when the test result is negative . Passengers need to report  the test result to China Customs before boarding.

The Chinese Embassy in Denmark has updated its Guide on Epidemic Prevention and Control Measures for China-bound Travelers. To ensure a smooth journey, please read the guide carefully.

Guide on Epidemic Response Measures For China-bound Travelers from Denmark

I. Travelers need to take a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT, including self-test kit)  or nucleic acid PCR test within 48 hours before boarding, and can only travel to China when the test result is negative. Those who test positive need to postpone their travel until they get a negative result.

II. Travelers need to declare negative test result to China Customs by filling the Health Declaration Form onthe WeChat mini-program of China Customs (scan the QR code below), at https://htdecl.chinaport.gov.cn or via the China Customs APP.

III. Airlines will not check PCR or RAT test result of the passengers before boarding.

IV. Mask wearing is required throughout the flight for proper personal protection.

V. Upon arrival in China, travelers need to use the China Customs health declaration code to complete entry procedures. Following health declaration and regular health inspection, travelerswill be able to enter China. Travelers with problems in health declaration or symptoms such as feverare required to take a test by China Customs.Those who test positive will needto self-quarantine at home or place of residence or seek medical treatment as required. Those who test negative will go throughroutine quarantine inspection by China Customs.

VI. After entry, travelers from Denmark need to strictly abide by the local epidemic prevention and control requirements.

If you need a pcr-test you can do so at one of the test sites in Denmark. If you aren't a resident in Denmark, you need to register at covidresults.dk. Here you also book the test and see your test result. 

Tests are free and a negative test result will also show in the digital Corona Passport. The Corona Passport is no longer required in Denmark, but you need it, when you're travelling abroad.

Entry to Denmark

If you've got this far, it must mean this relationship is starting to get serious! We want to tie the knot and make sure you get to know all our everyday wonders - and the quirky bits too. So here's a bit of helpful information about Denmark's visas and immigration rules.

Is Denmark part of the European Union?

Yes, Denmark is a member of the European Union, which means travel to and from Denmark is governed by EU law. Therefore, different entry requirements may apply depending on where you're travelling from, and what your nationality is.

What are the visa and entry requirements to Denmark?

EU citizens can travel freely to Denmark; citizens of other countries may require a visa. If you travel to Denmark from outside the Schengen agreement area, you may also require a visa.  See here if you are from a country where you will need a visa to enter Denmark . 

Brexit and Denmark

UK citizens can travel to any country in the Schengen area, including Denmark, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. That also applies if you are visiting Denmark to attend business meetings, cultural or sporting events, or for short term studies or training. The whole visit has to be within the 90-day limit and visits to other Schengen countries within the previous 180 days count towards your 90 days.

At the Danish border control, UK citizens may need to use separate lanes from EU, EEA and Swiss citizens when queuing. Your passport may be stamped on entry and exit. 

Business travellers

If you come to Denmark for work or a longer stay and are a UK citizen, from 1 January 2021 you will have to apply for permission . If you are in Denmark with a visa or permit, the trip does not count towards your 90-day limit.

Apply for a short term visa to Denmark

The schengen agreement.

Denmark is part of the European Union's Schengen Agreement, which means that you do not need to show your national ID card or passport when you are travelling to or from Denmark from another Schengen EU country. You are still recommended to bring your passport or ID card with you in case you need to prove your identity. Some airline operators still require you to present a passport even for travels within the Schengen area.

The following countries are part of the Schengen Agreement: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Can I bring my pet to Denmark?

There are certain restrictions to bringing pets and other animals in to Denmark.  Consult the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration website  to see what rules exist regarding your pet.

Quick facts about entering Denmark

Denmark is part of the Schengen agreement, which eliminated border passport control between Schengen countries in Europe. This means you no longer need to stop or show your passport when travelling between Denmark and Germany or Denmark and Sweden. You must still have your passport with you, however, when travelling in Schengen countries as a form of identification.

Following Brexit, UK citizens can travel to any country in the Schengen area, including Denmark, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa.

Visa Requirements

There is a passport control when entering Denmark from a country outside the Schengen area and some nationalities need a visa to enter Denmark. Following Brexit, UK citizens are not required to have a visa to visit Denmark. You can check visa requirements for your country at the  Danish Immigration Service’s website .

Useful information about importation and exportation

The import, export, sale, purchase, delivery, receipt, production, processing and possession of drugs are defined as criminal offences. Cannabis is included in the definition of drugs.

Duty-free alcohol and tobacco

There are different regulations regarding importing and exporting alcohol and/or tobacco depending on whether you are travelling within the EU or outside the EU. Visit  the Danish Tax Authority’s website  to figure out how much you are allowed to carry when arriving in and departing from Denmark. 

Food products

Visit the  Danish Veterinary and Food Administration website to see rules on which foods you can bring into Denmark.

Tax-free shopping

If you live outside the EU, you can reclaim the VAT you pay on goods you purchase in Denmark. You will be reimbursed between 10% and 19%, which amounts to the VAT minus and administration fee and you can only claim on purchases that are over 300kr.

In Denmark, you may not acquire, possess, carry or use firearms, knives or other dangerous weapons, except in specific cases with particular police permission. It is also illegal to use self-defense sprays such as CS gas in Denmark.

China Eases Travel Requirements: New Guidelines from May 19, 2022

China eases travel requirements for for inbound overseas travelers by adjusting some of the pre-departure COVID-19 test policies. We discuss the new guidelines and provide information based on announcements released by multiple Chinese embassies, including the Chinese embassy in the United States.

People travelling to China will only be required to perform two nucleic acid tests 48 hours before their flight and one antigen test 12 hours before boarding under the new guidelines announced on May 19, 2022, by several Chinese embassies overseas. Those who test negative will receive a health code and will be permitted to board the plane. For individuals who have recovered from the infection, there will be no extra requirements.

Aside from the Chinese Embassy in the United States, Chinese embassies in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark, Serbia, and Rwanda have made similar changes to the conditions for travel to China. Below we provide a complete list of the main changes announced by such countries.

United States

According to notice from the Chinese embassy and consulates in the United States, travellers from the US no longer need an RT-PCR test seven days before travelling, starting May 20, 2022. Antibody test requirements have also been eliminated. Regardless of whether they have been vaccinated or with which vaccination, passengers will be required to take two COVID-19 tests from two different testing sites within 48 hours and one antigen test within 12 hours of boarding the aircraft. Crew members will no longer need to undergo supplementary quarantine and will be able to enter China as normal passengers. The notice includes a list of the current approved direct flights between China and the US, which you can see in our tracker here .

The Chinese embassy in the UAE eliminated the requirement for two nucleic acid tests 21 and 14 days before travel, as well as the that for Serum IgM testing, regardless of the passenger’s vaccination status – with an important exception for Ethiad Airways, which still requires travellers to China to undergo serum IgM antibody testing within 48 hours before departure. Recovered patients no longer need to present CT or X-ray testing before departure. All passengers are still required to show two negative PCR tests within 48 and 12 hours before departure.

Netherlands

Before boarding, all foreign passengers going to China must provide a QR code with the Health Declaration Code (HDC) mark released by the Chinese embassy in the Netherlands, as well as an original antigen test certificate (if applicable) issued by institutions authorized by the same embassy – list available here .

The Chinese embassy in Serbia withdrew the demand for a health code application for people who have been vaccinated for less than 14 days, effective May 18, 2022. Passengers are still required to complete a double PCR testing within 48 and 24 hours from departure, as well as an antigen rapid test 12 hours before.

The Chinese embassy in Denmark announced that starting from May 18, 2022 , all China-bound passengers from Denmark, including those who have not inoculated (or fully inoculated) with COVID-19 vaccines, are required to take two PCR tests instead of “PCR + IgM Antibody” tests.

According to the latest notice , effective May 18, 2022, testing criteria for China-bound travellers (regardless of their vaccination status) include two nucleic acid PCR tests, completed within 48 and 24 hours before boarding, respectively, and one rapid antigen test, within 12 hours of boarding. IgM antibody testing is no longer required for non-vaccinated travelers. Moreover, passengers departing from Rwanda to China can transit only one time.

More opening-up on the horizon?

Travel to and from China has decreased as the nation implements a “dynamic COVID zero” approach, which includes limitations on passport issuance and renewal, mandatory quarantine for most visitors upon arrival, and airline cancellations. However, since the Omicron variant presents a reduced incubation period, international air travel has picked up, including the movement of China-bound passengers.

Accordingly, experts feel that the latest policy adjustments for travellers are unlikely to jeopardize China’s domestic COVID-19 fight in any way. Indeed, since the incubation period for the latest Omicron strain appears to be as short as two or three days, test results released within 48 hours of departure are sufficient to monitor possible contagions, compared to tests performed 7 or 14 days in advance. It has also been pointed out that the immunization rate of Chinese people living abroad, particularly students, is already quite high given the levels of vaccination and the previous spread of the COVID-19 variants.

The Chinese government has altered the COVID-19 playbook multiple times to maximize the antiviral measures while adhering to the dynamic zero-COVID policy, which epidemiologists say best suits China. Indeed, already in early May, Beijing announced the official implementation of the shorter quarantine regime, also motivated by the Omicron variant’s shorter incubation period. The policy change was aimed to ease the strain of quarantine on medical and facility resources and will serve as a model for lowering COVID-19 measures further.

According to our analysis, the altered pre-entry testing and post-entry isolation are not likely to have a substantial influence on the domestic epidemic prevention scenario in China, given both the short incubation time and mild symptoms of Omicron. While it is uncertain how the government will respond in the future to the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic, the latest policy amendments can be read as a clear sign of the willingness of opening and ease travel restrictions, gradually, and in conformity with the gravity of the overall COVID-19 situation, both domestically and abroad.

What to expect when traveling in china, best times to travel to china, 8 ways to enter china: all open now.

Since China has fully permitted visa applications, there are now several ways to enter the country.

If you still hold a valid Chinese visa (any type including a tourist visa, 10-year visa, a port visa, etc.), you can use it to enter China.

If you don't have a Chinese visa or your visa has expired, you can apply for a new one. All visas can now be applied for, including tourist visas, business visas, work visas, and so on. (International visitors can apply for a tourist visa to the Chinese Mainland in Hong Kong.)

For the documents required for a visa application, you can refer to the information given by a Chinese embassy/consulate . Please submit your application at least two months in advance.

To apply for a tourist visa (L visa), you will be asked to provide an invitation letter issued by a Chinese travel agency or individual or round-trip air tickets and hotel bookings.

Now it is very easy to apply for a visa . You can easily apply by yourself without an intermediary. The following is how one of our clients successfully applied for a Chinese tourist visa:

• First, fill out the form at the China Online Visa Application website ;
• Second, make an appointment on this website to submit your visa materials on Appointment for Visa Application Submission website ;
• Third, take the required documents to the embassy to submit;
• Finally, you will get a return receipt if your documents are qualified.

Usually, you will get your visa after 7 working days. The application fee is about USD185 for US citizens.

Q: What if my passport expires but my visa doesn't?

A: You can travel to China on the expired passport containing valid Chinese visa in combination with the new passport, provided that the identity information (name, date of birth, gender, nationality) on both passport identical.

If there is a change to any of the above details, you must apply for a new visa.

2. 144-Hour Visa-Free Transit Policy

If you do not apply for a Chinese visa, you may still have the opportunity to visit these areas of China visa free: the Shanghai area (including Suzhou, Hangzhou, etc.), the Beijing area (with Tianjin and Hebei), the Guangzhou area (Shenzhen, Zhuhai, etc.), and more. Take advantage of the 6-day visa-free entitlements.

Reason you don't qualify:

• You must be in transit to a third country or region.
• You must leave the city area (prefecture or municipality) after the 72/144 hours (the 72/144-hour limit is calculated starting from 00:00 on the day after arrival, i.e. 24:00 on the arrival date).
• Your passport must be valid for more than 3 months at the time of entry into China.
• Your passport nationality is not eligible for the 72/144-hour visa exemption program.
• You have Chinese visa refusal stamps in your passport.

3. Port Visas (Landing Visas)

If you don't have time to get a visa, or if you find it cumbersome to apply for a tourist visa, you could consider traveling to China through a port visa.

Port visas can be applied for a group at least including 2 people. You need to enter the country within 15 days after you get your entry permit. The port visa allows a stay period of 1 to 2 months.

Applicable ports include Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Guilin, Xi'an, Chengdu, etc.

Note: Tourists from America are not granted a port visa in Shanghai.

4. Visa Exemption for ASEAN Tour Groups to Guilin

In addition, tour groups from ASEAN member countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Myanmar, Brunei, and the Philippines, can visit Guilin for 144 hours without visas as long as they meet the visa-free transit policy requirements.

5. Shanghai Visa-Free Policy for Cruise Groups

Shanghai has a 15-day visa-free policy for foreign tourist groups entering China via a cruise. You must arrive and depart on the same cruise and be received by a Chinese travel agent at the Shanghai Cruise Terminal (or Wusong Passenger Center).

6. Hainan Visa-Free Access

No visa is required for staying on Hainan Island for up to 30 days for ordinary passport holders from 59 countries. Groups and individual tourists must book a tour through an accredited travel agency.

7. Visa Exemption for the Pearl River Delta Area

International travelers from Hong Kong or Macau are able to visit the Pearl River Delta area (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, etc.) visa-free as long as they go with a registered tour provider, such as us.

8. APEC Cards

If you hold a valid APEC business travel card, you can simply enter China with the card without applying for a visa.

Travelers who hold a valid APEC business travel card can stay in China for up to 60 days.

Do I Still Need a PCR Test or Antigen Self-Test to Enter China

No. Starting from August 30, all travelers entering China will no longer need to undergo any COVID-19 testing. You do not need to submit any test results for COVID-19 before departure.

Hong Kong / Macau Travel Restriction

Hong kong entry requirements.

Travelers from any region bound for Hong Kong will no longer need to take pre-flight COVID-19 tests (no PCR test, no RAT test) from April 1.

Direct high-speed trains from Guangzhou and Shenzhen to Hong Kong are available now. In preparation for the Canton Fair, it is expected that direct high-speed ferries will be launched from Guangzhou Pazhou Port to Hong Kong's airport in mid-April.

Macau Entry Requirement

From August 30, travelers from any region bound for Macau will no longer need to take pre-flight COVID-19 tests (no PCR test, no RAT test).

There is also no need for any tests when traveling from Macau to the Chinese Mainland.

Inbound and outbound international flights in the week beginning March 6th rose by more than 350% compared with a year earlier, to nearly 2,500 flights, according to Chinese flight tracking data from APP Flight Master.

At present, there are one or two direct flights a week from New York to Shanghai, Los Angeles to Beijing, Seattle to Shanghai, London to Guangzhou, etc.

There are also many flight options with stopovers that are more frequent and affordable. Testing at transit airports is now not required!

The Coronavirus outbreak in China has subsided. China looks like it did in 2019 again. No special measures (like PCR tests or health codes) are required when traveling around China. All attractions are open as normal.

Wearing a mask is not mandatory when traveling. In hotels, masks are off for the most part. But in some crowded places, such as airports or subway stations, many people still wear masks.

Weather-wise, the best times to visit China are spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October), when most of the popular places have their most tourism-friendly weather, except for the "golden weeks" — the first week of May and of October — when most attractions are flooded with Chinese tourists.

If you are looking for smaller crowds, favorable prices, and still good weather, you should consider March and April or September.

Tourism in cultural and historical destinations like Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an is hardly affected by weather conditions. They are suitable to be visited all year round.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Denmark set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact Denmark’s embassy in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for passengers entering Denmark, Greenland or the Faroe Islands.

Passport validity requirements

To travel to Denmark, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements .

To enter Denmark (and all Schengen countries) your passport must:

• have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive. Passports issued after 1 October 2018 are now valid for only 10 years, but for passports issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added if you renewed a passport early
• have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave

Contact Denmark’s embassy in the UK if your passport does not meet both these requirements.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document, or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Checks at border control

Make sure you get your passport stamped

If you’re a visitor, your passport must be stamped when you enter or leave the Schengen area (which includes Denmark). Border guards will use passport stamps to check you have not overstayed the 90-day visa-free limit for stays in the Schengen area. If your passport was not stamped, border guards will presume you have overstayed the visa-free limit.

If your passport was not stamped, show evidence of when and where you entered or left the Schengen area (for example, boarding passes or tickets) and ask the border guards to add the date and location in your passport.

At Danish border control, you may also need to:

• show a return or onward ticket
• prove that you have enough money for your stay – the amount varies depending on your accommodation

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area (including Denmark) for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:

• as a tourist
• to visit family or friends
• to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
• for short-term studies or training

If you’re travelling to Denmark and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

To stay longer (to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons), you must meet the Danish government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you need with the Danish visa application service .

If you stay in Denmark with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Applying for a visa

Use the Danish visa application service to apply for a visa.

Visas for Greenland and the Faroe Islands

Greenland and the Faroe Islands are not members of the EU. You do not need a visa to enter for tourism. If you plan to live and work there, you must get a work and residence permit – apply for residence in Greenland or the Faroe Islands .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of Denmark. You can read more information about customs duties from the Danish government . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty, including large amounts of cash and valuables .

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries. There are some exceptions for medical reasons, for example certain amounts of powdered infant milk, infant food, or pet food. Check the rules about taking food and drink into the EU on the European Commission website.

It is illegal to import whale products from Greenland or the Faroe islands into the UK or EU. You could be fined up to £5,000 or imprisoned.
