Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore and Dave Gahan at the O2.

Depeche Mode review – to the newly minted power of two

The O2, London On the latest leg of their first tour after the death of founding member Andrew Fletcher, fellow Depeche Mode mainstays Dave Gahan and Martin Gore reward fans with hits from across the decades – and seem closer than they’ve been in years

A triumphal arch dominates the stage set of Depeche Mode’s tour . The giant M stands for Memento Mori – the title of their 2023 album, widely hailed as a return to form. But that monumental M is also for Mode. Two years ago they were a band under existential threat, when founder member and keyboard player Andrew Fletcher died of heart failure. Eye-wideningly, much of the latest album’s concern with death had already been established by chief songwriter Martin Gore some time before Fletcher’s passing.

Now, Depeche Mode are on their second year of a tour of the world’s stages, pummelling audiences with caustic earworms about our flawed human nature once more. On night one of leg four, they seize their day with vigour. Singer Dave Gahan, in fine voice, often spins around on the spot, his emphatic shirt cuffs recalling the Damned’s Dave Vanian’s, but with a far more salubrious couturier.

Comfortingly mohicaned, Gore also sports his customary black nail varnish and swaps between keyboards and a low-slung semi-acoustic. Also on stage are keys player Peter Gordeno and drummer Christian Eigner, the latter perhaps a little too keen on stadium rock fills. It takes a while for an actual memento mori – a reminder that death comes to all – to appear. But giant projections of skulls covered with glitter ( pace Damien Hirst ) spin around during Enjoy the Silence from 1990’s Violator album, daubed with the word “enjoy”.

Better than the heavy symbolism, though, is the song’s unexpected progression tonight from a tune that recalls New Order to house piano rave breakdown, one that could have gone on for far longer. The visuals for the magnificent Everything Counts , meanwhile, elegantly enhance the song’s anti-greed message. A video of a mime with gloved white hands enacts the lyrics, like an arty sign language interpreter.

The two hours of Mode music that plays out on the Greenwich peninsula, just 30 miles from the band’s native Basildon, rewards fans with a retrospective from across the band’s eras, from start to end. In with the new: the song Ghosts Again may have taken top billing as Memento Mori’s calling card, but tonight the machine hydraulics of set opener My Cosmos Is Mine and the clean lines of My Favourite Stranger stand prouder.

Depeche Mode go out with the old too. “Are you ready to have a bit of fun?” asks Gahan in the encore. It’s a prelude to 1981’s Just Can’t Get Enough , a holdover from the long-ago Vince Clarke era, rendered as glorious synth-pop with added polyrhythms. The US, where the band reinvented themselves as glowering electronic rock beasts, may not remember them when they were Spandau Ballet with a dungeon in their basement, but SE10 clearly does.

What we are witnessing, though, besides an assured greatest hits set, is a kind of rock Jenga in real time. What happens when you knock a support out from under a structure? The remaining struts either take the load – or don’t. In other words: construction time again. It has been a hallmark of this album campaign that the pact to continue has brought Gore and Gahan closer together after decades of arm’s length diplomacy, often with Fletcher as middleman.

Gore was the band’s sole songwriter between the 1981 departure of founder member Clarke and the 2005 détente that marked Gahan’s increased creative input to the band. Tensions between Depeche Mode’s two most valuable players (who live on opposite coasts of the US) had contributed to the departure of Alan Wilder in 1995. A former dependency on alcohol (Gore) and heroin (Gahan) had not helped matters either; neither did Gahan’s multiple brushes with death .

Dave Gahan at the O2

The newly minted power of two is borne out tonight by the affection and bonhomie the survivors show each other. There are broad smiles and praise from Gahan for Gore’s “beautiful, angelic tones” after a couple of Gore-fronted numbers; backslaps throughout and hugs at the end. Fletcher is remembered – as a giant, subtly morphing black and white image – when the band play World in My Eyes , his favourite Depeche Mode song.

That big proscenium M could stand for Martin as well. Gore downs tools to sing a moving, pared-back rendition of 1987’s Strangelove , accompanied only by Gordeno. He follows it up with Heaven , a 2013 song that faintly recalls Portishead’s Glory Box . Both provide some breathing space from Default Mode: the thunderous sulks about relationships, religion and vice.

If their set closer, Personal Jesus , covers that middle ground, two other canon highlights hold up the ends. Never Let Me Down Again is a compelling portrait of dependence that leads to a bout of manic arm waving from the crowd. Most assured of all, though, is I Feel You , from 1993’s Songs of Faith and Devotion – an unrelenting love track that swings at the same time. More than any other tune, new or old tonight, it captures Depeche Mode’s enduring lust for life.

Depeche Mode Live Reviewed: Dave Gahan and Martin Gore lead a joyous black celebration

Read mojo’s report on depeche mode’s triumphant show at london’s o2 arena.

Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan live on stage, London 02 Arena January 22 2024

Depeche Mode 02 Arena, London , 22 January, 2024

The black-and-white film playing across the “M”-shaped screen at the back of the stage shows Dave Gahan and Martin Gore in Grim Reaper hoods, playing a Seventh Seal-style chess game in the video for Ghosts Again, the first single from last year’s  Memento Mori . The real-life figures beneath, however, are spinning quite a different story. Twirling around in hectic circles, arms outstretched in his turquoise-panelled waistcoat, Gahan suddenly comes to a figure-skater stop and holds the pose like he’s waiting for the judge’s perfect score, a moment of preposterous theatricality that highlights the ever-fascinating dichotomy at the heart of this band.

READ MORE: “We Had To Find A Way Of Becoming Friends…” Dave Gahan on the loss of Andy Fletcher and how it brought him and Martin Gore closer together.

This is, inescapably, the Memento Mori tour, Gahan and Gore now operating without Andy “Fletch” Fletcher, who died in 2022 and whose face poignantly fills the stage during a monolithic World In My Eyes. They have always been (as artist Jeremy Deller’s 2008 film Our Hobby Is Depeche Mode underscored) a band who demanded to be taken very seriously indeed: “I give in to sin / because I like to practise what I preach,” sings Gore on tonight’s underground cabaret take on Strangelove, a perfect summation of their peak transgressive appeal.

Yet while their music might proudly bear the smuts and residues of Berlin dungeons and LA rock’n’roll corruption, the survivor of many dark scenes, tonight’s show also underlines their devotion to spectacle, to melody, to fun. They come onstage to the abrasive grind of  Memento Mori  scene-setter My Cosmos Is Mine – a harsh scruff-of-the-neck way to grab the audience’s attention, but an arch reminder that from now on, the O2 is their universe. Repeatedly tonight – from the robotic gasps of Policy Of Truth to the rock-Mephisto singalong of Black Celebration - it’s clear that there’s no real need to stuff so many hooks into even the heaviest songs, unless it’s just for the sheer profligate glee of it. They might be consummate stadium-rock professionals, but it’s interesting that the live video feeds are treated to make it look like some kind of Samizdat Iron Block Betamax from 1980. As the video skulls that rotate behind a glorious Enjoy The Silence have scrawled across their foreheads: “Enjoy!” It’s later than you think.

Gahan embodies this brilliantly, occasionally venturing into the audience on the well-deployed runaway, veering between imperious toreador strut, graceful black-swan gesture, filthy bend-and-snap and - on the high biblical camp of John The Revelator - a Zoolander Nick Cave. Gore is a more delicate presence, his torch-song versions of Strangelove and Heaven (from 2013’s Delta Machine) a welcome gear change. “The beautiful angelic voice of Mr Martin L Gore” says Gahan, as he returns to the stage. There’s a lot of affection visible – a high five, hugs, a gathering round the drums after a formidable I Feel You, laughter during the encore as Gahan conducts the audience in a teasing coda to Just Can’t Get Enough (no slight synth caper but a joyous pop fractal).

depeche mode tour o2

The encore ("are you ready to have a little bit of fun, then?") also sees Gore and Gahan hitting the runaway again for an earnest Condemnation, before the singer conducts the crowd in the crab-like arm-waving choreography of Never Let Me Down. The final crescendo comes with Personal Jesus, the thundering drop into “reach out, touch faith” delayed but very gratifying, knowing nearly too far is just about right. “Things get damaged, things get broken,” sings Gahan on Precious (from 2005’s  Playing The Angel ) but tonight he and Gore show just how effectively they have held the corners of Depeche Mode together. Like that existential chess match, they have played one hell of a game.

Depeche Mode, O2 review: An immensely moving return after Andy Fletcher’s death

On the opening night of the basildon band’s first full uk tour in seven years, the late keyboardist's presence was much missed.

Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode performs at The O2 Arena on the first date of the band's tour (Photo: Chiaki Nozu/ WireImage)

The spectre of death has been central to the dark core of Depeche Mode ’s stadium-sized synth-pop for 40 years, but that didn’t make it any less shocking when it finally arrived for real. The sudden passing of keyboardist and band cheerleader Andy “Fletch” Fletcher in 2022 aged just 60 – six weeks before recording started on 15 th album Memento Mori , a stylish, elegant record that was already particularly preoccupied with mortality – still obscures all.

On the opening night of the Basildon band’s first full UK tour in seven years , his presence – a reliably good-natured counterpoint to the absurd flamboyance of frontman Dave Gahan and more business-like presence of guitarist/keyboardist Martin Gore – was much missed. It also cast their material in a different, present light.

Depeche Mode's dark themes came with a heightened emotional truth (Photo: Gus Stewart/Redferns)

The themes explored by Gore, the band’s chief songwriter, which seemed subversive in their younger years, have (with the exception of depraved sex) taken on a strange type of poignancy in their advanced stage. Frayed relationships, internal struggle, faith, redemption, control, regret, and death – Gahan embodied all in a two-hour set that veered from brooding to blistering.

But they came with a heightened emotional truth. “Everything seems hollow/ when you watch another angel die,” Gahan sang, two songs in on new track “Wagging Tongues”, where the poetic licence suddenly felt all too real. The album’s lead single “Ghosts Again”, a beautifully restrained piece of melodic electronica, was intensely affecting.

It was hard not to marvel at how much Depeche Mode have managed to succeed at such scale. With over 100 million albums sold, and more than 30 years on from the world-shaking album Violator , this is their biggest ever tour. That album’s huge hits – the electro-blues-inflected “Personal Jesus” and stately ballad “Enjoy the Silence”, both of which sounded suitably arena-filling with the former’s slow-build opening and the latter’s disco-tinged extension – fit snugly into the rock canon. But not much else about their sound suggests mass appeal. Depeche Mode often feel cold, ominous, metallic and weird – in the case of the wavy “Policy of Truth” and the seedy “Stripped”, they were often all at once.

Dave Gahan's flamboyant presence remains key to Depeche Mode's appeal (Photo: Gus Stewart/Redferns)

Yet buried beneath the abstractions is a keen pop sense. “Just Can’t Get Enough”, from 1981 and written by original member Vince Clarke, who soon left to form Erasure , is joyful synth-pop heaven but very much an exception (“are you ready to have some fun now?” Gahan said before the song was played at the start of the encore by way of recognition). More representative was the agitated “Never Let Me Down Again”, a pop song despite itself.

Jennifer Lopez, This Is Me… Now review: Remarkably unremarkable

J Lo's reunion with Ben Affleck was remarkable. Her album about it is not

But Gore’s pop sensibilities are astute: when he took over vocals and sang S&M ode “Strangelove” accompanied by just keyboards, it sounded like a bastardised torch song.

Of course, Gahan is key to the appeal. Now in his sixties, he remains impressively vampiric: rake thin, with slicked-back hair, in his black waistcoat and white shirt he resembled a cross between a cast member from What We Do in the Shadows and a rebel snooker player as he shimmied, pirouetted and arse-wiggled in a ridiculous yet deeply committed fashion.

If that was to be expected, his public displays of affection towards Gore were perhaps not. Having spent decades mired in the traditional mistrusting frontman vs songwriter battle for supremacy, they have found friendship in the trauma of Fletcher’s death.

Gahan gushed over Gore’s voice and talent, sang into his eyes; they even high-fived during “Enjoy the Silence”. Given what’s happened, watching them embrace and hug tightly, with genuine smiles, after performing “Condemnation” together on the B-stage during the encore was an incredibly moving moment.

Touring to 31 January (depechemode.com)

ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: Live review – Depeche Mode at The O2

By Andy Jones | January 25, 2024

LONDON, ENGLAND - Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode performs at The O2 Arena on January 22, 2024 in London, England. (Photo by Chiaki Nozu/WireImage)

Depeche Mode – Live at The O2, 22 January 2024

Rating: 4/5

The last time I saw and reviewed Depeche Mode on stage, it was for their triumphant Twickenham gig last year, during which I talked so much about the cost that I was starting to sound like my dad. I’ll not be so middle-aged this time. And besides, Depeche Mode in 2024 are just so damned irresistible live that, well, to hell with the cash.

This is a band that has had four decades to hone the craft, of course, but those of us who bought into Dreaming Of Me  all those years ago could never have conceived the words ‘Depeche Mode 2024’ being used in the same sentence, let alone seeing two of the original lineup still knocking it out of the park all these decades later.

Intense and immense

But on stage, and even in their 60s, this is a band that slides around its back catalogue – Dave Gahan gyrating about the stage like a 1960s pool hustler with Martin Gore forever smiling on – with so much ease and panache that you’re in safe hands from the atmospheric beginning to the searing, glorious end.

Inevitably there are comparisons to be made with that gig at Twickers, but this O2 experience has a very different vibe. More indoor and darker, obviously, and more celebratory perhaps. There are more setlist changes to enjoy here than we’d expected, too. Black Celebration is intense and immense, Strangelove is Martin Gore as his best, a surprisingly brilliant version, as is Condemnation  later when he is joined by Gahan for the first encore, while Policy Of Truth , another new entry, doesn’t surprise when it half steals the show.

Sublime set

There are tracks that are starting to grate, maybe, but for every John The Revelator , there’s an Enjoy The Silence just around the corner. And have I had enough of Just Can’t Get Enough ? Yes, very probably, but you’re not going to get that past the many thousands who disagree with me tonight. Nor are they wanting to hear Memento Mori album highlights like Before We Drown , and People Are Good in its place, like me, although I suspect the latter would bring the house down in a similar fashion.

There are other highlights from that album, though (and to my mind one of their strongest recordings). My Cosmos Is Mine is still one of the finest ways to open a gig, My Favourite Stranger rocks better live than as a recording, and Ghosts Again is simply sublime.

Get our Depeche Mode special

Imperious hits

But, let’s face it, it’s the swaying of Never Let Me Down Again , the emotion of World In My Eyes – now a permanent reflection on Fletch – and the searing power of Stripped that take us to our highest of highs. By the end of it all, as we stomp through Personal Jesus , even the £27.50 Gordon Ramsey burger doesn’t leave a bad taste in my mouth – whoops, there I go again. And as I complain – yet a-bloody-gain – to a friend on text about prices, he does counter with ‘at least they are the actual band playing live in front of you – in the future you’ll pay the same to see a tribute act or holograms’. And he’s right, of course.

Behind the machines and imperious hits, tonight the Depeche Mode of 2024 – and yes I really did write those words – are more human than ever. Genuine smiles, genuine warmth, and totally ruling over us all.

New dates: 29 shows in Europe 2024 announced

July 10th, 2023 by editorial

With over two million tickets sold to date on the Memento Mori Tour, and following sold-out stadium and arena shows across Europe, Mexico, Canada, and the US this summer and fall, Depeche Mode today announced 29 new European dates which will extend the tour into 2024. Even more fans will now have a chance to experience the raw, emotive power of the Memento Mori Tour, hailed by Rolling Stone as “a stunning celebration of life and music.”

Depeche Mode Announce 2024 UK And EU Tour, Including London O2 Arena Date January 22nd

With more than two million tickets already sold on the memento mori tour, and following sold-out shows across north america and europe, depeche mode announce additional tour dates across europe in 2024..

Depeche Mode will bring the Memento Mori Tour back to Europe in 2024!

Following stadium and arena shows across Europe, Mexico, Canada, and the US this summer and autumn, Depeche Mode today announced 29 new European dates which will extend the tour into 2024. Even more fans will now have a chance to experience the raw, emotive power of the Memento Mori Tour, hailed by Rolling Stone as “a stunning celebration of life and music.”

These new European tour dates begin January 22, 2024 at London’s O2 Arena, and finish April 5 after multiple nights at Lanxess Arena, in Cologne, Germany. Along the way on the 22-city tour the band will also play multiple nights at Berlin’s Mercedes-Benz Arena, Paris’ Accor Arena, Madrid’s Wizink Center, Milan’s Mediolanum Forum, and more. With over two million tickets already sold, the 110-date Memento Mori Tour is on track to be one of Depeche Mode’s largest to date, as well as one of the largest worldwide tours of 2023.

Having sold more than 100 million records and played to more than 35 million fans worldwide, Depeche Mode remains an ever-evolving and singularly influential musical force. Depeche Mode released their critically acclaimed 15th studio album, ‘Memento Mori’, on March 24, 2023 alongside the launch of the Memento Mori tour, with the first single, ‘Ghosts Again’, being hailed as “hypnotic” (Rolling Stone) and “a gorgeous, haunting song” (Revolver). An indelible inspiration to fans, critics and artists alike, Depeche Mode continues to forge ahead, with the ‘Memento Mori’ album and tour representing the opening of the newest chapter of a peerless and ongoing legacy.

On the Memento Mori Tour, Depeche Mode have once again partnered with luxury Swiss watchmaker Hublot to support the band’s charity efforts. Around the tour, Hublot and Depeche Mode will be supporting Conservation Collective, a global network of foundations promoting grassroots environmental initiatives, with a special focus on projects aiming to tackle plastic pollution, waste management, and environmental cleanups. In addition, Depeche Mode will be working with Live Nation’s Green Nation team to reduce the use of single use plastics, improve recycling, and reduce food and other waste on tour and at the venues. The tour consisted of 112 shows and saw them play to 2million people

Depeche Mode have played the final show of their extensive ‘Memento Mori’ tour earlier this week. See footage and the setlist below.

  • READ MORE: Depeche Mode interviewed: “Do the best you can – you don’t know if you’re going to be doing it again”

The tour consisted of 112 shows in support of the band’s 15th studio album ‘ Memento Mori ’ and saw them perform to well over 2million fans. This marked their first record and tour since losing longtime bandmate and close friend Andy Fletcher .

Yesterday (April 8), the synth-pop legends wrapped up their massive tour at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany. The show saw them draw on a similar setlist throughout FROM the run, but naturally ended with an emotional climax and farewell from the band.

The setlist for Depeche Mode’s show in Cologne was:

‘My Cosmos Is Mine’ ‘Wagging Tongue’ ‘Walking in My Shoes’ ‘It’s No Good’ ‘Policy of Truth’ ‘In Your Room’ (Zephyr Mix) ‘Everything Counts’ ‘Precious’ ‘My Favourite Stranger’ ‘Strangelove’ (Acoustic; sung by Martin) ‘Somebody’ ‘Ghosts Again’ ‘I Feel You’ ‘A Pain That I’m Used To’ (Jacques Lu Cont Remix) ‘World in My Eyes’ (Dedicated to Andrew Fletcher) ‘Black Celebration’ ‘Stripped’ ‘Behind the Wheel’ ‘Enjoy the Silence’ ‘Waiting for the Night’ (Peter & Christian on keyboards) ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ ‘Never Let Me Down Again’ ‘Personal Jesus’

In  a glowing four-star review of Depeche Mode’s huge show at London’s Twickenham Stadium last summer, NME described the gig as as showing the band “at the top of their game and bonded in fraternity”.

“ Coldplay  might insert LEDs into your gums while  Muse  recreate War Of The Worlds with some balls-out bombast, but there’s an effortless cool to Depeche Mode’s stadium approach,” it read. “The Anton Corbijn stage design is sparse and simple, with just the giant M lettering of the new record and some tastefully simple visuals, leaving everything else down to the songs and personality with no pyro or pratting about.

“They may be demigods to their leather-clad cult, but tonight Depeche Mode have never seemed so human.”

Speaking to NME last year , Depeche Mode members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore opened up about what’s next for them following the end of tour.

“The most important thing is to be putting out good music and that people like it,” said Gore. “Once we finish this tour we’ll take a break, then we’ll see if and when we feel like doing it again. Up until now we always have. You never know, and I’m not saying that in a negative way. We just take each project as it comes.”

Gahan opened up about his compulsion to rejoin the group dispite being so vocal about his frequent reluctance, saying: “That is a good word. It was like that; I was compelled. Just when I thought I was out, they dragged me back in!”

He added: “Losing Fletch made that feeling more real. Everything will come to an end. I don’t know when that is. After Fletch passed and we had to continue I said, ‘Try to enjoy what you’ve got to do here and do the best you can’. You really don’t know if you’re going to be doing it again.”

In other news, the band marked the end of their ‘Memento Mori’ tour by sharing a new music video and huge remix package for ‘People Are Good’.
