I did the Signature Wine Tour with Discover Okanagan Tours with Rocco as our guide. There were four of us on the tour and I found this was a great, nimble group size. I was really happy with the mix of wineries selected for us. I was also impressed with how knowledgeable our guide was and how he really seemed to have great relationships with all the tasting rooms. He didn't just drop us off and say "have fun!" He made sure we got the full experience at each place and put in a word to the wise here or there about smart places to save or spend our money and time. All of the tasting fees were waived because we were with Discover Okanagan Tours -- instead of on our own.

My boyfriend and I had a great day on our first ever wine tour! Cam was very friendly and gave a lot of great recommendations in terms of wine and local cuisine. We were able to visit 6 wineries and have lunch at Indigenous World (which was fantastic!!) This is a great tour for wine novices as you're able to visit some very fancy wineries and some more rustic small batch ones. We learned a lot about the different types of grapes and the winemaking process. Thank you to Cam for making our very first wine tour such a fun and enjoyable experience!! :-)

Art becomes a path to healing for Asana Hughes

Name Asana Hughes

Role Undergraduate student

Programs Fine Arts, Art History and Visual Culture

Faculty Creative and Critical Studies

Campus Okanagan  (Kelowna, BC)

Hometown Coldstream, BC

"Pursuing a career in art is my primary goal, but I also see the value in furthering my education. A Master’s degree in fine arts, or traditional arts, would not only enhance my artistic development but would also open doors to new opportunities and experiences.”

“I’ve walked a path of creativity throughout every stage of life. For me, art isn’t just a form of expression, it’s a way of life; a path of healing and a spiritual journey,” explains third-year fine arts student Asana Hughes.

Currently in the midst of a visual arts major and a minor in art history and visual culture, Hughes’ path intertwines creativity, spirituality and a deep-rooted connection to the planet.

“Through my art, I seek to not only express my own journey but also to advocate for the Earth, embodying the principles of ecological art as often as possible.”

His artistic journey is deeply rooted in spiritual and meditative practices, often resulting in artworks that carry profound spiritual undertones. Mandalas, a recurring theme in his work, serve as a conduit for philosophical, psychological and spiritual exploration.

Hughes chose UBC Okanagan for the sense of community and accessibility it offered. This decision was reinforced by the positive experiences shared by a friend and former fine arts student, whose journey inspired Hughes to embark on his artistic adventure at the university.

“Being part of the program here, there’s a lot of opportunities that I was unaware of that I’m now exploring further.”

Asana Hughes sits on a chair positioned against a white wall. Taped on the wall with green painter's tape is a pencil outline of a mandala.

Asana Hughes in front of a new piece of work, Facets of Light. He says it’s “a depiction of how each of us are part of the whole, and an expression of gratitude for the role we play in this beautiful universe.”

On campus, he was hired as a gallery assistant to work with the UBC Okanagan Gallery and Indigenous Art Intensive , was part of the Amp Lab’s Press Play! Lightbox Team and also worked with the Disability Resource Centre as an accessibility assistant.

“I saw the opportunity to work with the gallery as a wonderful chance to get some practice and keep my momentum going throughout the summer,” he explains. “I like to have a practical outlet for the things I’m learning.”

The experience enabled Hughes to gain practical skills and academic credit, but perhaps more importantly, it provided personal growth and cultural exploration. Through his work at the gallery and participation in the Indigenous Art Intensive, Hughes was able to connect with his studies in a meaningful way and gain a deeper understanding of himself and the world around him.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work with certain Indigenous teachings and communities over the years, but to see it in the context of the art world and the university experience was something I didn’t have any exposure to,” he notes. “It was a great opportunity to dive deeper and learn more about my place here.”

In his third year of studies, Hughes received a UBC Partnership Recognition and Exploration Fund in collaboration with Archway in Vernon for a project titled Creatrix Rising .

“I’ve been actively volunteering with Archway, starting with simple tasks like raking leaves at the transition house and participating in community fundraisers. Over time, my role has evolved,” Hughes explains. “I now sit on the planning board for Creatrix Rising .”

Asana Hughes in the metal shop, wearing a protective face shield while he uses a grinder on something placed on a table top.

Hughes uses a grinder in the metal shop to bring an upcoming piece of artwork to life.

One of his notable contributions to the project was a workshop titled “Freestyle Geometry for Emotional Re-Calibration.” Focused on mandala-making, the workshop provided participants with a space to explore their emotions and intentions through art, leading to healing and personal growth.

“Through this process, they were able to consciously experience their subconscious, resulting in beautiful representations of personal journeys and transformations.” The project culminated with an exhibition of these works at the Caetani Centre in March 2024 .

Hughes believes his journey at UBCO and the connections he has made so far along the way is a testament to the power of art as a tool for healing and self-discovery.

“Being an artist and having an art practice is something I decided I wanted to do long ago. Pursuing a career in art is my primary goal, but I also see the value in furthering my education. A Master’s degree in fine arts, or traditional arts, would not only enhance my artistic development but would also open doors to new opportunities and experiences.”

Hughes adds: “I’m excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. I’m also mindful of the importance of enjoying the journey, exploring new avenues like art therapy and furthering my education to enhance my artistic practice.”

Boris Pasternak's museum house

Guided tour of Pasternak's museum housein Peredelkino village

Pasternak’s “important achievement both in contemporary lyrical poetry and in the field of the great Russian epic tradition" was honored with a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. For many readers outside Russia, Pasternak is known mainly as the author of the touching historical novel Doctor Zhivago written in 1957. The novel as a whole communicates the haphazard, uncertain and chaotic quality of life caused by the Russian Revolution and the heroic case of quiet humanism demonstrated by a single person.

Pasternak’s translations of Georgian poets favored by Joseph Stalin probably saved his life during the purges of the 1930’s. However, the individualistic Pasternak was not suited to the Soviet artistic climate when art was required to have a clear socialism-inspired agenda and so Russian publishers were unwilling to print Pasternak’s novel. In fact, Doctor Zhivago first appeared in Italy in 1957.

Pasternak won his Nobel Prize the following year. Despite Pasternak politely declining his Nobel Prize quoting: “because of the significance given to this award in the society to which I belong”, the award nevertheless spread his fame well beyond Russia. He ended his life in virtual exile in an artist's community in Peredelkino village. His last poems are devoted to love, to freedom and to reconciliation with God.

Pasternak was rehabilitated posthumously in 1987. In 1988, after being banned for three decades, "Doctor Zhivago" was published in the USSR. In 1989 Pasternak's son accepted his father's Nobel medal in Stockholm.

Pastenak loved his house in Peredelkino, the house and surrounding nature featuring in his poetry. The poet considered the cycle of poems "Peredelkino", which he completed in the spring of 1941, to be his best work. The poet spent the first difficult months of the war in Peredelkino; he completed the novel "Doctor Zhivago" here, wrote the Lara poems and translated Shakespeare and Goethe. It was in this house that he learned he was to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature on October 23rd 1958. He died here on May 30 1960.

The house in Peredelkino only acquired the status of a museum in 1990, thirty years after the poet's death and a century after his birth. The museum has fully preserved the environment and atmosphere of the house where Boris Pasternak lived and worked. The director of the museum is Elena Pasternak, grandaughter of Boris Pasternak.
