GO CHASING WATERFALLS

Hawaiian cruises.

Experience Aloha with a cruise to Hawaii.

Just the word "Hawaii" conjures visions of turquoise waves lapping at colorful sands, a rich historical tapestry that's as Polynesian as it is American and a welcoming culture you can distill into a single word: Aloha. Once you arrive, trace the history of Pearl Harbor on Oahu, where you can tour battleships and see the memorial to that fateful day in 1941. Cruise to Hawaii and head to the Big Island to scale volcanoes like Mount Kilauea and chase waterfalls on the slopes of Mauna Kea. Or enjoy the sun and surf on the remote shores of Kauai and Maui. Discover the magic with a Hawaiian cruise.

Hawaii Rainforest

LET ADVENTURE FLOW

Hawaii offers some of the world's best in outdoor exploration. The best Hawaii cruises allow you to trek through the lush Hana Rainforest, or enjoy a more volcanic experience on the Big Island. Marvel at the lava flows of Kilauea, or savor the coffee that grows in the soil made fertile by millions of years of eruptions.

Hawaii Beach With City View

HIT THE BEACH

Hawaii is a group of islands with hundreds of beaches. Do you cruise to Oahu and hit Waikiki — where the people-watching is as good as the tanning — or to the scenic Napali Coast of underrated Kauai? Decisions, decisions.

Hawaii Forest Waterfall

RAINFOREST BATHE

Hawaii offers a tropical twist on the hip travel hobby called "forest bathing." It's all the rage among spiritually minded travelers these days and a great way to see nature close. Hike to Rainbow Falls on the Big Island, or through the lush Hana Rainforest on Maui.

Hawaii Volcano

PAL AROUND WITH PELE

The volcano goddess Pele takes many forms in Hawaii. Hawaii is the United States' most volcanic state, but your experience doesn't have to be death-defying. Daredevils will want to get up close and personal with the active lava flow of Kilauea, but you could instead hike up Mauna Loa, which is extinct.

Honolulu Iolani Palace

DIVE INTO THE CULTURE

Hawaii might look like a postcard, but it's more than just a pretty face. Your Hawaii cruise will let you counterbalance naps on Waikiki with a tour of the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor or a visit to Iolani Palace, the residence of Hawaii's royal family.

Hawaii USS Arizona Memorial

MONUMENTS OF THE PAST

No trip to Oahu is complete without paying your respects to the victims of Pearl Harbor at the USS Arizona Memorial. However, there's a lot more to Hawaiian history. You should also learn about Hawaii's Polynesian heritage at Honolulu's Iolani Palace, the former home of the long-ruling Kamehameha dynasty.

Kona Coffee from Hawaii

GET TO KNOW YOUR MORNING JOE

When imagining Hawaiian beverages, you might think of a fruity drink with an umbrella, but the state is the only permanent coffee producer in the U.S. Head to the Big Island to tour the plantations where the good stuff is grown, from famous Kona Coffee to craft producer Mount Thunder.

Polynesian Cultural Center

WALK IN THE WAYS OF OLD

Hawaii's Polynesian past is still palpable today. On Oahu, check out the Polynesian Cultural Center, where you can tour six different recreations of traditional villages. Watch a Polynesian dance, play ancient games that have been handed down through the generations, and learn the old ways of fishing without a net.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Hawaii Cruises Insider

Hawaii is ideal to visit 365 days per year, whether you're looking to laze on a beach, explore the rainforest explorer or scale a volcano. However, prices and crowds increase when kids are out of school and during Christmas and New Year's.

With warm weather year-round, Hawaii is one of the U.S.'s sunniest states. The rainy season goes from November to March, but don't worry too much about the weather during these months; it isn't a constant monsoon — there's simply a greater chance of showers.

Looking for a more remote Hawaiian getaway? Kauai's Napali Coast is renowned but surprisingly uncrowded. If you dock in Kauai, you can drive along the seemingly hidden Napali Coast. Even in Maui, which has become more popular, "secret" beaches (and red ones, like Kaihalulu Beach) provide respite from the crowds.

The Culture of Hawaii: History & Folklore

What is Hawaii's historical background? Who was Hawaii’s First King? Enjoy a tour guide tailored to you on the culture of Hawaii & its island folklores.

Plan some slower days during your trip to jibe with the leisure-loving locals. The phrase "island time" isn't a joke.

Don't discount mainstream destinations like Oahu's Pearl Harbor and Kilauea on the Big Island — they're popular for a reason!

While some best practices (like not walking too close to volcanoes) are obvious, be aware of lesser-known laws. For example, it's actually illegal to hike Honolulu's popular Haiku Stairs.

CUISINE POI, PORK, AND POKE

Seafood is an important part of the Hawaiian diet, but there's so much more to enjoy. Visit Hawaii and prepare for a feast like no other, with nods to Polynesia, Japan and even the American heartland.

Hawaii Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl

Poke bowls are a great way to enjoy Hawaii's renowned ahi tuna. Ahi tuna has become famous all over America, most commonly seared and added to Asian-style salads. The best way to sample this Hawaiian favorite, however, is in bowl form. There are several varieties of poke, with modern versions substituting avocado and spicy mayo for classic accompaniments like seaweed and rice.

Polynesian Pork Plate

POLYNESIAN PORK

Is there any meal more Polynesian than a whole, roasted pig? Vegetarians have plenty of choices in Hawaii, but this isn't one of them. After cooking for hours over an open flame, this tender meat is plucked off the bone and plated, or sandwiched in a Hawaiian roll.

Hawaii Taro Root Poi

POI, THE TASTY PASTE

Taro root is a common food in the Asia-Pacific region, but usually not in the U.S. — outside of Hawaii, at least. The purple paste known as poi is a puree of this much-loved root vegetable, and it pairs well with other Hawaiian staples, such as the aforementioned Kalua pork (dip it!) and fresh fish.

If you’re looking to make an exotic destination your next vacation, let’s talk about the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of Hawaii. The answers are as follows: visit Hawaii on a Carnival cruise (of course), and… visit Hawaii because this place is simply spectacular! Take a Hawaii cruise and explore exotic locations spread across four islands — the Hawaiian island chain is home to names you know, like Maui, Kona and Honolulu. These spots feature postcard-worthy waterfalls, volcanoes and some of the world’s most stunning, sunning beaches. You’ll find these spread across an island chain so otherworldly that you may forget you’re in the states! Best of all, that postcard you’re sure to send home will require only domestic postage.

  • Experience some of the world's most famous beaches.
  • Get up-close with a volcanic mountain.
  • Hula it up at a real luau.

do cruise ships go to hawaii

Hawaii is a perfect bucket list item to cross off during the pandemic. Whether sailing from Los Angeles, San Francisco or San Diego, there is a way for every cruise lover to explore Hawaii from the mainland U.S.

Cruise Industry News has found four cruises to help travelers comfortably explore the state this month and season.

Ship: Carnival Miracle Cruise Line: Carnival Cruise Line Capacity (at 100% Occupancy): 2,124 Built: 2004 Homeport: Los Angeles (United States) Itinerary: Mexico and Hawaii

The 2,124-passenger Carnival Miracle is sailing a 15-day roundtrip cruise from Long Beach, Los Angeles. The itinerary includes four days at sea before the ship arrives at its first destination of Honolulu in Hawaii. Next ports of call include Maui (Kahului), Kona and Hilo, before the Miracle heads to Ensenada in Mexico for day 14 and back to Los Angeles early on day 15.

One Hawaii sailing is available for booking this season, with a departure on Feb. 20. Prices start from $1,929 per person based on double occupancy.

Ship: Grand Princess Cruise Line: Princess Cruises Capacity (at 100% Occupancy): 2,600 Built: 1998 Homeport: Los Angeles (United States) Itinerary: Mexico and Hawaii

The Grand Princess is sailing a 15-day Hawaiian Islands roundtrip itinerary from Los Angeles, California. Five ports of call are on the agenda: Honolulu, Kahului, Hilo, Kauai and Ensenada in Mexico.

Ship: Ruby Princess Cruise Line: Princess Cruises Capacity (at 100% Occupancy): 3,100 Built: 2008 Homeport: San Francisco (United States) Itinerary: Mexico and Hawaii

Like the Grand Princess, the Ruby Princess is sailing a 15-day Hawaiian Islands roundtrip itinerary from San Francisco, California. Five ports of call are on the agenda: Honolulu, Kahului, Hilo, Kauai and Ensenada in Mexico.

Three sailing dates are available for booking this season: on Jan. 16, Feb. 10 and March 27. Prices start from $999 per person for an interior room based on double occupancy.

The Ruby Princess is also set to return to Hawaii for the fall-winter 2022-2023 season.

Ship: Koningsdam Cruise Line: Holland America Line Capacity (at 100% Occupancy): 2,660 Built: 2016 Homeport: San Diego (United States) Itinerary: Mexican Riviera and Hawaii (or Hawaii only)

Prices start from $1,849 per person for an inside cabin based on double occupancy.

A Hawaii cruise is a great way to explore the breathtaking islands of Hawaii. It allows you to easily hop from one island to another as you visit the beautiful beaches of Maui , the lush rainforests of Kauai , and the volcanic landscape of the Big Island .

But before you plan your cruise and island excursions, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the Hawaii cruise ports. Not only will you have a better idea of where you’ll be docking, but it also makes it easier to plan tours and excursions during your stopover. Be sure to check out our Hawaii Cruise Travel Guide to get the most out of your cruise.

Here are the six Hawaii cruise ports that cruise ships can dock or tender at:

  • Honolulu Pier 2 Cruise Terminal on Oahu (minutes from Waikiki Beach)
  • Port of Hilo on the Big Island (Hilo, East Hawaii)
  • Kailua Pier (tender port) in downtown Kailua-Kona, Big Island
  • Kahului Harbor in north-central Maui
  • Lahaina Harbor (tender port) in West Maui (currently not operational)
  • Nawiliwili Harbor on Kauai’s East Side, near Lihue Town.

Looking for more Hawaii cruise planning resources? We have hand-picked the best shore excursions on each island: Big Island Shore Excursions – Honolulu Shore Excursions – Kauai Shore Excursions – Maui Shore Excursions We’ve ironed out the rest of your Hawaii cruise planning details in our Cruising Hawaii Guide – it’s convenient, organized, and comprehensive so you can be Hawaii cruise-ready right away!

Your Hawaii Cruise Ports Depends on Your Itinerary

Where you go on your Hawaiian cruise largely depends on the cruise line and itinerary. Most cruises will visit Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island, although others may only make stops at two or three islands.

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line operates a year-round Hawaiian cruise that leaves from and returns to Honolulu, Oahu. After leaving Honolulu, the Pride of America visits four different ports – Kahului (Maui), Hilo (Hawaii Island), Kona (Hawaii Island), and Nawiliwili (Kauai).

It’s the only cruise that stays in Hawaii, so it’s the best option if you want to see as much as possible in a short amount of time. Plus, it has overnight stays on the Big Island, Kauai, and Maui so you can stay in a hotel or take part in early morning or late evening excursions. Plus, no sea days means more time to explore the islands!

Hawaii Departure Ports

Before you decide on a Hawaiian cruise, it’s important to take note of the departure and arrival ports, as they are different from ship to ship. Generally speaking, most Pacific Ocean-crossing itineraries will leave from the west coast. The most common departure and arrival ports include:

  • San Francisco, California
  • Los Angeles, California
  • San Diego, California
  • Seattle, Washington
  • Vancouver, BC

Of course, these aren’t the only departure ports for cruise ships, as many long-term itineraries operate from various points around the world. Extended voyages can leave from Miami, England, or even Australia before making their way to Hawaii!

However, the majority of one to two-week Hawaiian cruises will leave from the west coast. Foreign-flagged or built ships that travel between two US ports are required to stop at a foreign country sometime during the journey (in most cases, this will be Vancouver, Canada, or Ensenada, Mexico). This is due to the Passenger Vessel Service Act (PVSA) , which aims to protect the American maritime industry.

You’ll find that most ships make these foreign country stops, except for NCL’s Pride of America. As the only ship to qualify for the PVSA , it’s allowed to travel between US ports and stay in Hawaii for the entire duration of the trip. The ship runs every week throughout the year and departs from and arrives back at Oahu’s Cruise Terminal 2, which is located in the city of Honolulu.

Because of the PVSA, the Pride of America follows a strict set of guidelines. Not only is the crew required to be 75% American, but they must also abide by US labor laws and wages, which can make voyages on this cruise more expensive than others.

What to Expect at Hawaii Cruise Ports

Because you’ll only have a limited time at each Hawaii cruise port, it’s crucial to plan out what you want to do beforehand. Should you book a shore excursion? Is it necessary to rent a car? Can you easily walk to a beach from the port? As you can see, there are lots of questions that need to be answered before you disembark!

To help make your stay on land as smooth as possible, we recommend getting our Cruising Hawaii Guide . It’s packed with insider tips on what to do on those days when you’re docked.

This includes over 90 shore excursions on Maui, Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island, including snorkel spots, volcano hikes, waterfall treks, and more! We’ll also share how to get around (taxi, Uber, or car rental) and a few self-guided excursion days to make the most of your time here. You will waste no time when you land at these Hawaii cruise ports.

Hawaii Cruise Ports: Your Ports of Call

Oahu (honolulu) cruise terminal.

As the starting and/or ending point for many Hawaiian cruises, Honolulu is likely to be included on your itinerary. The Pier 2 Cruise Terminal is centrally located between Waikiki and downtown Honolulu, making it a good jumping-off point for exploring the most popular attractions on Oahu.

If Honolulu is at the beginning or end of your trip, then we recommend spending at least two or three days here. We recommend doing this prior to your cruise to adjust for the jet lag and you can tick off some sights while also having downtime for a few lazy beach days.

Best Honolulu shore excursions :

  • Visit Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona
  • Take a sightseeing tour of the entire island
  • Learn how to surf on Waikiki Beach
  • Sail on a traditional wooden catamaran

Hawaii cruise ports Honolulu

Maui, Hawaii Cruise Ports

Kahului Harbor on the northern coast of the island is the main port of Maui. As a cargo facility, there isn’t much to do around the harbor, so we strongly recommend booking a tour or having a plan of action of what to do when you arrive.

The harbor is a 10-minute drive to the Kahului airport, which makes it easy to rent a car if you would like to drive around. And because of the port’s central location, it’s easy to reach most of Maui’s attractions in under an hour.

The second port on Maui is Lahaina Harbor (a tender port). At the moment, this terminal is closed after the devastating fires that ripped through Maui on August 8th, 2023. Because of the damage, Lahaina Harbor is no longer in operation for incoming cruises. While some cruise lines list Lahaina as a port of call for some 2024 departures, it’s unknown if it will be up and running at that time.

Best Maui shore excursions :

  • Drive (or be driven) through the Road to Hana
  • Snorkel the Molokini Crater
  • Marvel at the sunrise over Halekalani

Hawaii cruise ports Kahului Maui

Island of Hawaii Cruise Ports

Most ships make two stops on the Big Island, giving you ample time to see different things on both coasts. The Port of Hilo is located on the eastern side and is the gateway to the Hawaii Volcanos National Park. However, this is also the rainy side of the island, which means you can also expect to see lush rainforests and beautiful, cascading waterfalls!

Kailua Pier (a tender port) is situated on the western side of the island. From here, you’ll be just a stone’s throw away from beautiful beaches, incredible snorkeling, and tons of fun water sport opportunities! There’s also a charming town center within walking distance from the port with some great restaurants and bars.

Depending on your cruise operator, it’s possible to spend a night on land while the ship moves between ports. Doing so does cost extra (you’ll need to book a hotel for the night), but it allows you to take advantage of full-day tours, early-morning excursions, and even late-night or evening tours.

Best Island of Hawaii shore excursions :

  • Hike Volcanoes National Park
  • Sample coffee on a Kona coffee farm tour
  • Snorkel with Manta Rays at night
  • Go stargazing on Mauna Kea
  • Admire humpback whales on a whale watching tour (from December to March)

Hawaii cruise ports Kailua Pier

Kauai, Hawaii Cruise Port

If your cruise is going to Kauai, it will dock at Nawiliwili Harbor in Lihue. Although its a bit outside of town, you can easily reach other popular destinations around the island by booking a tour, renting a car, or hiring a cab.

Places like Poipu and Wailua are close by, while Waimea Canyon and Hanalei are a bit further out and require more planning.

Some ships, like NCL’s Pride of America, spend two days docked at Kauai. With more time here than other ports of call, you’ll be able to see much more of the Garden Isle. It also means you can book early morning, late evening, or even full-day excursions.

Best Kauai shore excursions :

  • See the unspoiled Napali Coast
  • Hike the lush Waimea Canyon
  • Go mountain tubing through the Hawaiian backcountry

To support local relief efforts, we have donated $50,000 to Maui United Way and are encouraging others to join our efforts by donating at mauiunitedway.org .  In addition, together with our partners, we have collected and will be donating over $150,000 in supplies such as food, clothing, and mattresses to the Hawaii Community Foundation, whilst also activating our network of suppliers to support with in-kind donations. The 9 Best Hawaiian Cruises For People Over 50

A trip to the tropical paradise of Hawaii is on many people’s bucket lists. Whether you have extended vacation time or you’ve retired and have a flexible schedule, the Aloha State is likely on your mind.

The 50th state comprises six main islands and several smaller islands. All have beaches, waterfalls, beautiful landscapes, and unique culture. If you want to see more than one island on your bucket-list trip, the easiest way to do so is to take a cruise. But which cruise should you choose? Let’s take a look at the possibilities.

Several popular cruise lines visit Hawaii, including Princess, Celebrity, Norwegian, Holland America, and Royal Caribbean. Norwegian has a large ship based in Hawaii that sails from Honolulu and visits the other islands. If you are an adventurous type, expedition lines like UnCruise Adventures sail to Hawaii’s smaller, less-visited islands. There’s a lot of variety when it comes to Hawaiian cruises, and you’ve got options when it comes to size of ship, ports to visit, type of excursions, length of itinerary, and more. One thing’s for sure: There’s a cruise out there that’s right for you.

As I evaluated the following cruises, I looked at the following criteria:

  • Cuisine: Are there a variety of quality food choices? Are they part of the package, or do they cost extra?
  • Service: Were previous cruisers happy with the service?
  • Value: How is the quality for the cost?
  • Size Of Ship: How large is the ship in comparison to similar ships?
  • Age Of Ship: How old is the ship? Has it been refurbished?
  • Decor: Is the decor modern? Traditional? Dated?
  • Target Clientele: Does the cruise attract families? Boomers?
  • Entertainment: Are there a variety of activities on offer? What are they like? Are there both active and relaxed options?
  • Passenger-To-Crew Ratio: Are there enough crew members to meet the needs of the passengers? How are the service and attention to detail?
  • Itinerary: Which island stops are included?
  • Length: How long is the cruise?
  • Excursions: How many excursions are available, and what are they like?

If you’re looking to cruise to, from, or around Hawaii, here are some great cruises to consider.

1. Holland America’s Koningsdam

This round-trip cruise from San Diego , which stops at four ports in Mexico and four ports in Hawaii with an overnight in Honolulu , is packed with value and fantastic sites.

Holland America’s Koningsdam is a luxurious, reasonably priced ship known for outstanding service, exceptional cuisine, and a variety of entertainment options.

Launched in 2016, it is a fairly new ship with a fun music theme. Previous cruisers rave about the many food and entertainment options.

Holland America ships are known for their adult-only areas and outstanding specialty restaurants. The Koningsdam takes this to the next level, with ship highlights including a double deck with a glass roof, a surround-screen theater, and solo cabins.

Holland America has a reputation for attracting mature passengers who are well traveled. One of the most accessible ships in the industry, the Koningsdam has accessible staterooms, and passengers can make arrangements ahead of time to secure wheelchairs, scooters, and other amenities for people with disabilities.

Excursion Highlight: On the Deluxe Coastal Cruise With Whale Watching excursion, you’ll learn about the humpback whale and its habitat aboard a comfortable catamaran. Enjoy the great views without having to exert yourself. Be sure to bring your camera!

Pro Tip: Families flock to this ship during the summer months and holidays. May and September are better months for less noise.

2. Celebrity’s Solstice

On this cruise , which boards in Honolulu, you will visit two Hawaiian ports before sailing to Vancouver .

Celebrity’s Solstice is an elegant, modern ship that’s the height of sophistication. While it’s great for people of all ages, the “modern luxury” touches are geared toward couples in their mid-50s.

Navigating the ship is easy, and passenger flow is fantastic, with nary a line in sight. The attentive, speedy service is likely due to the low passenger-to-crew ratio.

The only real downside to this cruise is the upselling of drink packages and specialty restaurants that takes place within the first 48 hours on the ship.

Excursion Highlight: On the Kohala Waterfalls Adventure, you’ll take a 1.5-mile hike past gorgeous waterfalls and have time to go for a swim in a private waterfall. This excursion requires a moderate level of activity. Don’t forget the sunscreen and your camera!

3. Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Of The Seas

This cruise boards in Honolulu, stops at four of the Hawaiian Islands, and then sails to Vancouver.

Royal Caribbean’s 4,905-passenger, Quantum of the Seas offers plenty of options, from dining to entertainment. This ship is a great value for the money you spend and appeals to a wide range of travelers, from families to singles to couples to groups. Families cruise during the winter and summer holidays. When school is in session, the passengers are mostly 50+ travelers.

Quantum of the Seas is a stellar ship with innovative features like the Flowrider, Seaplex, and Ripcord by iFly.

This ship is easy to navigate, with similar venues clustered together. It has both indoor and outdoor pools and an adult only area — a real luxury.

Excursion Highlight: On the Big Island, guests can snorkel alongside dolphins or head to Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, a Hawaiian heritage site with ancient petroglyphs, temples, and centuries-old aquaculture ponds.

4. Holland America’s Koningsdam

This cruise sails from Vancouver and stops at four Hawaiian ports before returning to Vancouver.

Those looking for refined, casual luxury will appreciate Holland America’s Koningsdam . It’s a great choice for baby boomers and older members of Gen X who want an active cruise.

Destination lectures and enrichment workshops provide edutainment. Cruisers also enjoy the mixture of activities and relaxation options.

If you are a music lover, you will enjoy this cruise. There is an emphasis on live music and a wide variety available, from classical music to rock and roll.

The Koningsdam also offers exemplary service and delicious food.

The ship offers accessible staterooms, and passengers can make arrangements ahead of time to secure wheelchairs, scooters, and other amenities for people with disabilities.

5. Celebrity’s Edge

This cruise will depart from Vancouver and sail to Honolulu in 2024, stopping at three other Hawaiian ports on its return.

A low passenger-to-crew ratio, excellent dining, and lots of quiet spaces to relax make Celebrity’s Edge a favorite. It is a big, beautiful ship, but at the same time, it’s not overwhelming. With a possible 2,918 passengers, it’s a great option for first-timers in the 50+ age group.

Celebrity Edge is one of the most refined ships at sea taking luxury, service, and culinary experiences to a whole new level.

Excursion Highlight: Coffee lovers will enjoy the Kona Joe Coffee Roasting Experience and the Coffee Farm Tour, which visits the world’s first trellised coffee farm and features breathtaking views of the gorgeous Kona Coast.

6. Princess’s Emerald Princess

This cruise sails from Los Angeles and stops at four Hawaiian ports before returning to the City of Angels.

A friendly crew and excellent shore excursions are highlights of a cruise on the Emerald Princess .

An older ship, the Emerald Princess maintains a high level of service but doesn’t have some of the features that newer ships do. There are no climbing walls or waterslides. But the ship makes up for that with fantastic excursions at each port.

The atmosphere is relaxed, and the biggest negative reported was that passengers sometimes had to wait in line to enter the main dining room — but the food is certainly worth the wait!

Excursion Highlight: The full-day, wheelchair-accessible Kona By Land & Sea features a visit to local shopping areas and a lunch cruise of Kealakekua Bay. Be sure to bring your wallet, since you will have several opportunities to shop.

7. Holland America’s Volendam

On this 18-day round-trip cruise from San Diego, you will visit five Hawaiian ports and Ensenada, Mexico.

Holland America’s Volendam is an elegant and spacious ship for mature clientele. Although it is starting to show its age, it is still a good midsize ship with excellent dining, top-notch entertainment, and enrichment options. You can even play pickleball at sea on board the ship.

The Volendam’s staff provides consistently stellar service. You will feel pampered and relaxed.

On the downside, previous cruisers reported challenging Internet service. But for low-tech travelers, or for those looking forward to a time to relax and power off their devices, this might be a plus.

The majority of passengers are middle to upper class, well traveled, and 60+.

Like Holland America’s Koningsdam , the Volendam is especially accommodating of people with disabilities, offering accessible staterooms, wheelchairs, scooters, and other amenities for those with mobility issues.

Excursion Highlight: On The Bishop Museum: All Access Pass excursion, you’ll get to tour Honolulu’s famous Bishop Museum of science and history, which occupies a 14-acre campus with four different gallery buildings.

8. Princess’s Ruby Princess

This cruise begins and ends in San Francisco and stops at four Hawaiian ports and Ensenada, Mexico.

The Ruby Princess is a great option for a multigenerational trip, offering a variety of activities for the whole family — kids, adults, and grandparents. The cruise ship has good food choices and a laid-back atmosphere.

If you are searching for quiet, the adults-only section provides the perfect sanctuary.

Although the ship is showing its age in places, the service and attention to detail make up for it.

Excursion Highlight: On the Secret Waterfalls Of Kohala excursion, a four-wheel drive van will take you to the heart of Kohala’s countryside, where you’ll encounter old sugar plantations, Hawaiian legends, and natural beauty. This full-day, moderate-activity excursion includes a hike to several waterfalls. You will have the opportunity to swim in a private mountain stream with cascading falls overhead. Be sure to bring your swimsuit and sunscreen.

9. Norwegian’s Pride Of America

This round-trip cruise departs from Honolulu on the island of Oahu and includes stops in Hilo and Kona on the Big Island as well as overnight stays on Maui and Kauai.

This shorter cruise on the recently refurbished Pride of America is a fantastic alternative for young boomers who are still working and have limited vacation time.

The Pride of America provides stellar customer service and is a great way to see all of Hawaii in style and comfort within a week.

According to reviews, the dining-room food and entertainment could be improved. You’ll find the best food on the Pride of America in the specialty restaurants.

Excursion Highlight: On the challenging Hawaii Volcanoes National Park excursion, you’ll explore the 116,000-acre Kahuku Unit of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You must be able to walk on uneven terrain and up and down stairs without assistance. Remember to bring comfortable walking shoes. Lunch is included.

Regardless of which cruise you pick, you are bound to have an amazing experience. Hawaii is a beautiful state, and each island has its own special charm.

The best time to cruise to Hawaii

Donna Heiderstadt

Hawaii is a year-round cruise destination known for its tropical weather and warm South Pacific waters teeming with sea life, so the best time to cruise to Hawaii is often whenever you can get there. But some months are hotter or rainier than others, specific time periods attract more crowds and certain seasons are known for signature activities such as whale watching and big-wave surfing.

Only one major cruise line, Norwegian , offers year-round itineraries, but more than a half dozen others sail 9-to-16-night, one-way or round-trip cruises to Hawaii from ports on the West Coast and in Hawaii during specific times of year. That means you'll have a greater selection of cruise dates and itineraries in certain months, generally October through April.

But when exactly is the best time to cruise Hawaii?

It depends on what you prioritize. The weather in Hawaii is generally at its most pleasant in April, May, September and October, but if you prefer it hot and dry, the best time to cruise Hawaii is from June to August. The best times to see whales are the winter months (January through March), but you'll likely experience some rain. The best times to cruise for low prices and great value are early November and early December.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

It is worth repeating, however, that there really isn't a bad time to set sail in Hawaii.

Here's a look at what you can expect when taking a cruise during each seasonal travel period in Hawaii. Knowing the general weather outlook and what natural phenomena or special events will be taking place can help you pick the right time to cruise for your travel group.

Hawaii's seasons

do cruise ships go to hawaii

There are only two seasons in Hawaii: summer (May to October, when the average daytime temperature is 85 degrees) and winter (November to April, when the mercury dips slightly to an average of 78-80 degrees). Even at night temperatures rarely drop below 65-75 degrees.

Love to swim and snorkel? Seawater in Hawaii is generally around 74 degrees in winter and 80 degrees in summer — and dolphins frolic in Hawaii's waters year-round. Hawaii's latitude close to the equator also means sunset times have little variation, occurring between 6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.

The wildcard is precipitation. Hawaii is known for its abundant sunshine and lush, tropical vegetation — and the latter needs rain. So yes, you're likely to encounter some showers during your visit to Hawaii, but more so in some regions and during specific months. In December and January, the islands receive almost 3 inches of rain, while the tally is less than half an inch in June, July and August.

It's also important to note that each of the four major islands typically visited on a cruise — Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the island of Hawaii — have what are called windward and leeward sides. The windward sides, which are lusher and greener, get more rainfall, while the leeward sides are generally sunnier and warmer.

For example, on the island of Hawaii, many cruises call on both Hilo, located on the windward side and known for its rainforests and waterfalls, and Kona, located on the leeward side and known for its arid climate and lava landscapes. So, it's possible in a single day to experience endless sunshine on one side of an island and intermittent downpours on the other. But there's a silver lining: the Hawaiian Islands are famous for their incredible rainbows.

What about major tropical storms? Although hurricane season in the central Pacific runs from June through November, storms making a direct hit on the Hawaiian Islands are pretty rare. Just five hurricanes or tropical storms have caused major damage since 1950 — the most notable of which, Hurricane Iniki, devastated the island of Kauai in early September 1992.

Winter: January to March

Winter is peak season for tourism in Hawaii — even though it is also the rainiest period in the islands — so airfares and hotel room rates are apt to be high and popular attractions are likely to be crowded. Still, a chance to escape the cold blanketing much of the mainland U.S. from January to March means it's among the most-desired times to enjoy a visit to the Aloha State. You'll find the most cruise options during these months and by booking well in advance (at least six months) you can likely snag a good-value cruise fare.

Weather-wise, daytime temperatures are comfortable at around 80 degrees, with nighttime lows of 65. Rainfall averages just under one inch a month in Honolulu, but certain ports are more likely to experience showers than others. These include the aforementioned Hilo on the island of Hawaii and Nawiliwili on Kauai, where monthly rainfall averages 4-5 inches in December and January.

Winter is also the season to experience two of Hawaii's most incredible phenomena. One is the annual migration of more than 10,000 humpback whales to the waters around Maui, where females give birth to their young. The other is big wave season (with swells as high as 30 feet) on the North Shore of Oahu, where professional surfers ride gigantic curls — the Banzai Pipeline being the most famous — during annual surf competitions in January and February.

Other events that can affect flight availability and crowds during this period are the Tournament of Champions PGA golf tournament at Kapalua on Maui and the All-Star Hula Bowl Classic Football Game on Oahu, both of which take place in January. Spring break in March is also a popular time for family vacations in Hawaii, so crowds can be expected.

Spring: April and May

do cruise ships go to hawaii

The spring sweet spot, between the winter peak but before the summer onslaught, is a terrific time to book a Hawaii cruise, although there are slightly fewer sailings during these months. Since this is the shoulder season, cruise fares, airfares and hotel rates are generally well priced.

The weather is also more than likely to be ideal, with just an inch of rain or less per month on Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii and about two inches on Kauai. Temperatures will be in the high 70s to mid-80s.

Spring also marks the tail end of humpback season; cruisers on April and even early May sailings may be able to spot a few of these mammoth creatures hanging around before beginning their long journey up to Alaska. Sea turtles can be spotted on all the islands in spring, but especially around Maui and Lanai as the waters warm with the approach of summer.

Traditionally, Japanese travelers have visited Hawaii in late April and early May during the so-called "Golden Week" when four Japanese holidays occur over a period of seven days. After three years of COVID-19-related vaccination and testing requirements were lifted in mid-2022, Hawaii expects to see a surge in Japanese tourism for Golden Week 2023, so plan accordingly to avoid the crowds. May 1 is also a statewide holiday in Hawaii known as Lei Day.

Summer: June to August

Summer is actually Hawaii's busiest season since the islands are extremely popular with both families and honeymooners. They are also at their warmest and driest. That's great if you like the heat (daytime highs approach 90 degrees in July and August) and prefer to swim in water that's almost as warm as the air. Calmer waters on the north shores of Oahu, Maui and Kauai also mean that some beaches can be enjoyed by more than just surfers. And on land, less rain means safer trail conditions if hiking is on your Hawaii must-do list.

But summer is also least busy when it comes to cruise ship arrivals, with only Norwegian and Princess offering sailings from June to August (when most cruise lines move their Pacific-based ships to Alaska). Hotel occupancy is extremely high, so pre-and post-cruise stays can be pricey.

Summer festivals include the Ukulele Festival Hawaii on Oahu (in July), Duke's OceanFest in Waikiki (in late August) and Koloa Plantation Days on Kauai (in July). Bon season, an obon dance tradition handed down by Japanese plantation workers, means bon dance events are held throughout the islands during the summer months. King Kamehameha Day (June 11) is a popular annual holiday in Hawaii.

Turtles are also abundant in Hawaii's warm, calm waters during this time since it's nesting season, while dolphins frequent Hawaiian waters year-round. So, while you'll miss the chance to see wintering humpback whales, there's still plenty of sea life to spot.

Early fall: September and October

Early fall is another shoulder season that offers good weather (as noted above, Hawaii is generally not in the path of storms during the central Pacific hurricane season) and fewer crowds. Cruise tourism to Hawaii begins to pick up again as cruise lines reposition ships from Alaska, and it's possible to find good-value fares during this time by booking well in advance or even last-minute. Airfare and hotel rates for pre- or post-cruise stays should be lower, too.

Weather-wise, September's rainfall is similar to that of the summer period, with totals under half an inch on Maui, an inch on Oahu and the island of Hawaii, and two inches on Kauai. Rainfall is double those amounts in October, but still less than in November and December.

Events to keep in mind when booking a cruise in September or October are the Ironman triathlon world championships, held annually in early October in Kona on the island of Hawaii, and several food and wine festivals, including the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival, which takes place in late October in Honolulu.

Late fall: November and December

do cruise ships go to hawaii

Late fall and early winter in Hawaii bring a major influx of tourists over the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's breaks. But the weeks in between are both great times to snag a deal on a Hawaii sailing — early November for a less-harried ambience and early December for lower cruise fares and airfares. Yes, December is Hawaii's rainiest month, but it doesn't rain every day and certainly not all day. (The rain comes in small bursts and mostly after dark.) Temperatures can dip into the 60s at night on some islands.

Once the calendar page hits mid-December, however, Christmas and New Year's crowds begin arriving and cruise, airfare and hotel room prices skyrocket. If you're on a tight budget or crowds make you crazy, it's best not to book a holiday cruise.

Events to keep in mind include the annual Kona Coffee Cultural Festival on the island of Hawaii in early November and the Honolulu Marathon in early December.

If a post-Thanksgiving/pre-Christmas cruise in Hawaii sounds appealing, you're apt to encounter the arrival of the humpbacks during the first two weeks of December. The waves on Oahu's North Shore also begin to swell, making for dramatic photos. And seeing this palm-tree-studded paradise decked out in holiday decorations along with abundant tropical poinsettias in full seasonal bloom makes for a memorable travel experience.

Bottom line

The best time to cruise Hawaii is the season or month that best suits your schedule, interests and/or budget. If abundant sunshine is paramount (and you don't mind sharing paradise with lots of fellow visitors and are OK if temperatures approach 90 degrees), think summer — although you'll have fewer cruises from which to choose and hotel rates will be high. If you're looking to escape the cold and want to see whales, big waves and tropical Hawaii at its most lush (and don't mind a bit of rain), opt for winter, when most major cruise lines sail the islands. Again, expect to pay a premium, especially for a pre- or post-cruise hotel stay.

The two shoulder seasons, April-May and September-October, offer up a happy medium with pleasant weather and generally good prices, while the lulls during early November and early December mean pre-holiday deals on flights and cruise fares are often available. These last three time periods are all the best times to cruise for overall value — even if you might miss seeing whales and those ginormous North Shore waves.

Here's when you need (and don't need) a passport to cruise.

It's the type of sailing – closed-loop or open-loop – that largely determines whether or not you need a passport to cruise.

Do You Need a Passport for a Cruise?

Passports on a map showing cruise lanes.

Getty Images

A passport isn't always required for cruising.

To determine whether or not you need a passport to cruise, you first need to figure out if the itinerary is closed-loop or open-loop (also known as open-jaw).

Closed-loop cruise: A closed-loop cruise typically doesn't require a passport since it begins and ends in the same U.S. port (though there are some exceptions to this rule).

Example: Royal Caribbean International 's seven-night Western Caribbean & Perfect Day cruise stops in several countries – the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti and Grand Cayman – but the itinerary is considered closed-loop because it starts and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Open-loop cruise: An open-loop cruise begins in one U.S. port and ends in a different U.S. port.

Example: Carnival Cruise Line 's 16-day Panama Canal from Seattle itinerary is not considered closed-loop because it departs from Seattle and completes its journey in New Orleans.

All of the above regulations have been determined by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative: a plan by the departments of State and Homeland Security that determines which documents are acceptable for proving identity and citizenship when entering the United States.

Where to cruise without a passport

There are several destinations where you can cruise without a passport on a closed-loop sailing. They include the following:

  • The Bahamas

When looking at cruises to these locations, be mindful of the home ports. The Bahamas, Mexico, Bermuda, the Caribbean and Canada are all foreign ports, which means they only qualify for the passport exception if they are a stop along your cruise itinerary . If the cruise originates in any of these countries, it is likely you will need a passport.

Since Alaska, Hawaii and New England are all U.S. destinations, any closed-loop routes departing from these locations will not require a passport. However, keep in mind that it can be hard to find closed-loop cruises originating in Hawaii or Alaska.

To find closed-loop itineraries for a Hawaiian voyage or Alaskan cruise , try searching for sailings departing from major cities on the West Coast, like Seattle or Los Angeles . By contrast, quite a few closed-loop cruises leave from New England ports, but they are often marketed as Canadian cruises.

When you need a passport for closed-loop cruises

Some cruise itineraries include foreign ports that require a passport for disembarkation. This is most commonly an issue for travelers on a closed-loop Caribbean cruise. Barbados , Guadeloupe , Haiti, Martinique , St. Barts , and Trinidad and Tobago all require U.S. citizens to present a valid passport to disembark and enter the country, despite WHTI regulations not requiring a passport for these destinations. Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private island , is an exception and does not require a passport despite its location in Haiti.

If your itinerary includes a country requiring a U.S. passport, your cruise line will require you to have the passport at check-in. Note that your passport must not expire within six months of your arrival in a foreign country or else it won't be considered valid for international travel.

Acceptable forms of ID

All travelers – U.S. citizens and foreign nationals alike – must present documents that show identity and citizenship when entering the United States. A U.S. passport can show both. If you don't have one or don't want to bring one, be aware that you may need to present more than one document.

U.S. citizens 16 and older

If you're a U.S. citizen age 16 or older sailing on a closed-loop cruise without your passport, you will need a government-issued photo ID like a driver's license. In addition, you must present a document that proves your U.S. citizenship. These include:

  • Passport card
  • State-issued enhanced driver's license (EDL)
  • Government-issued birth certificate
  • Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST)
  • American Indian Card (Form I-872) or Enhanced Tribal ID Card

The Trusted Traveler Programs are risk-based programs to facilitate the entry of travelers who have been vetted and preapproved. Most of these programs will provide you with a machine-readable card that allows you to pass through border checkpoints quickly. Keep in mind, some of these IDs are only available to travelers 16 and older.

Read: TSA Precheck vs. Global Entry

U.S. citizens younger than 16

U.S. citizens younger than 16 are only required to present proof of citizenship, such as one of the following documents:

  • Original, notarized or certified copy of their government-issued birth certificate
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by U.S. Department of State
  • Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Read: How to Get a Passport for Kids

Non-U.S. citizens

If you are a lawful permanent resident (or LPR) of the United States, you are required to present a permanent resident card or other valid evidence of permanent residence status.

Non-U.S. citizens, with the exception of Canadians and Mexicans, are not subject to passport exceptions, so a valid passport will need to be provided. Canadian citizens can present a valid passport, Enhanced Driver's License or Trusted Traveler Program card. Mexican citizens must present a passport with a visa or a Border Crossing Card.

Unacceptable forms of ID

While most common forms of identification are accepted, there are a few exceptions. U.S. military identification cards and U.S. Merchant Mariner documents are valid forms of identification, but only when traveling on official orders or in conjunction with official maritime business, so it is unlikely they will be accepted when traveling on a cruise.

Here are some other documents that will not be accepted as proof of citizenship:

  • Voter registration cards
  • Social Security cards
  • Baptismal papers
  • Hospital certificates of birth (for anyone older than a newborn)

It is important to note that many of the permitted forms of identification, such as a passport card or EDL, are only accepted at land and sea border crossings. Unforeseen circumstances, such as a medical air evacuation, may cause you to return to the U.S. by air travel. In this case, these documents won't be accepted when you try to reenter at the border crossing.

To avoid extra delays in your return to the U.S. following unforeseen travel complications, the Department of State recommends that everyone taking a cruise from the United States carry a valid passport book in case of emergency.
