Ultimate Guide to Kure Beach, NC: 1 Day Itinerary & 24 Best Things To Do

The Welcome to Kure Beach Sign in Kure Beach NC

Are You Planning A Trip to Kure Beach, NC?

Kure Beach, NC has been a part of my North Carolina adventures since 1998. Whether it’s been day trips, family vacations, or field trips with the kids, Kure Beach has woven its way into the fabric of my Coastal NC memories.

kure beach NC

And now, I get to take you with me on a journey to the sun-soaked shores, the historical fishing pier, and the small, beach town character of Kure Beach, NC.

colorful beach houses in Kure Beach, NC Photo by Christy Evers

Kure Beach, a charming coastal gem – a place where vibrant colors of beach side houses paint the skyline and the small-town beach vibes create an atmosphere of pure relaxation.

Located on an island, affectionately referred to as “Pleasure Island,” between Carolina Beach and Fort Fisher, Kure Beach, (pronounced as Cure-ee) is a treasure known for its colorful charm and the title of hosting the OLDEST fishing pier on the entire East Coast – the iconic Kure Beach Fishing Pier.

If you’re looking to check a North Carolina beach off of your NC travel bucket list, Kure Beach should definitely be one to consider when visiting Eastern North Carolina.

Why Visit Kure Beach?

dolphin tours kure beach

If you’re on the lookout for a spot that has a colorful Caribbean vibe without the need for a passport, Kure Beach in North Carolina is your ticket to paradise.

This small town packs a punch with its laid-back charm and a beach that’s as inviting as your grandma’s front porch.

Ocean Front Park Swings, Kure Beach, NC

The local Aquarium at Fort Fisher is a must-visit for marine enthusiasts, and history buffs can step back in time at the Fort Fisher Historic Site.

But wait, there’s more! Kure Beach knows how to throw a party, with festivals and events happening year-round.

Whether you’re a summer sun chaser or a cozy winter wanderer, this place welcomes you with open arms.

dolphin tours kure beach

With only a handful of hotels and pint-sized parking spots, the beaches stay refreshingly uncrowded.

Don’t get me wrong, it can get packed in the summer, however, due to the small amount of large hotels and large parking spots, you’ll find the beach much less crowded compared to towns with large hotel chains.

And don’t get me started about the mysterious legend of the Fort Fisher hermit—because every good beach town needs a sprinkle of mystery and intrigue.

And if you’re feeling a bit fishy, you can cast your line and try your luck at reeling in the big one!

However, you’re able to access the pier for FREE all year round if you simply want to soak in those stunning ocean views.

17. Hike to the Robert Harrill, Fort Fisher Hermit, Bunker

dolphin tours kure beach

Even in this quaint, sleepy beach town, there’s a mystery brewing, and it revolves around none other than Robert Harrill, famously known as the Hermit of Fort Fisher.

At the ripe age of 62, Mr. Harrill said good-bye to modern comforts and embraced a simpler life off the grid.

He trekked his way to Kure Beach and Fort Fisher in 1955, where he found refuge in an old WWII bunker, calling it home until his mysterious death in 1972.

dolphin tours kure beach

But Robert wasn’t your average hermit; he and his bunker became the area’s second-biggest tourist attraction.

After hearing about Robert by word-of-mouth, visitors flocked to hear him talk about survival off the land and preach his “School of Common Sense,” leaving behind donations in a frying pan.

After 17 years of life in his old WWII bunker, his death remains a mystery although officially attributed to a heart attack, locals are certain it was foul play.

His legacy lives on through books , videos , a theater production and even a facebook group .

You can still trace Robert’s footsteps by taking the Basin Trail at the Fort Fisher State Recreation area.

dolphin tours kure beach

I followed in the Hermit’s footsteps along the Basin Trail, marveling at the rugged salt marshes and the hidden history they hold.

After a little over a mile, I reached Harrill’s former home—the very bunker where he lived and met his mysterious end.

It’s surreal to stand where a man once lived life on his terms, dispensing wisdom on sustainable living and gaining notoriety solely through word of mouth.

As I hiked through the sand and salt marsh of the Basin Trail, I absorbed the serenity of the surroundings and reflected on the layers of stories embedded there.

dolphin tours kure beach

From whispered small-town secrets to the legacy of the Hermit himself, hiking the Basin Trail isn’t just about nature; it’s a journey through time and tales.

I had a cool experience one morning at the Ocean View Restaurant, while sipping coffee and listening to tales from the locals.

Avacado toast at the Ocean View Restaurant

I brought up the topic of the Fort Fisher Hermit, Robert Harrill.

A fellow diner casually got up, introduced herself, and shook my hand, proceeding to tell me that her father would often give Robert Harrill rides to the grocery store for essentials, specifically for milk and dog food, and she got to ride along.

It’s the kind of local tidbit that adds a whole new layer of interest and brings life to the legend of the Hermit of Fort Fisher .

19. Go Surfing at Kure Beach

dolphin tours kure beach

Kure Beach is nestled snugly on Pleasure Island, right in the heart of the Cape Fear region. I mean, who wouldn’t want to surf at a place called Pleasure Island, right?

Wave Conditions:

Now, when it comes to wave conditions, it’s like playing a game of dice with Mother Nature. You’ve got your beach breaks, sandbars, lefts, rights – it’s a mixed bag, my friend. And let’s not forget the influence of hurricanes and tropical storms. They can either make your day or send you paddling for dear life!

Best Time to Surf in Kure Beach:

Speaking of seasons, the prime time to shred some waves is from late spring to early fall. But don’t count out winter entirely. Sure, the water might be chillier, but there are fewer tourists crowding the lineup, and that’s always a win in my book.

Oh, and did I mention the photo of that awesome surfer catching a wave posted above? Yeah, I snapped that gem while I was walking the shoreline at Kure Beach in February. Talk about being in the right place at the right time!

So, before you grab your board and hit the water, just remember to check the surf reports, keep an eye on the weather, and maybe invest in a killer wet suit. Trust me, it’s gonna be epic, dude! (I want to say, “Dude” so bad, but I won’t, dude .)

20. Chat with the Locals

Ah. . . once upon a time, I ignorantly assumed that Kure Beach was just a temporary vacationer’s haven. But oh, how wrong I was!

In my recent visit to this charming coastal gem, I discovered a bustling community of locals who aren’t just passing through; they’re the heartbeat of the place.

Picture this: one early winter morning I was getting video footage and photo’s in front of the Ocean View Restaurant and saw a kind gentleman waving at me from inside.

Robert Maffitt, A Kure Beach NC Local with a Rich Family History to Share

I walked in found myself being introduced to the delightful company of Robert Maffitt, a descendant of the Kure Beach area dating back to the 1800s. As we sipped our coffee, he spun tales of his family’s saga, painting a vivid picture of the town’s evolution.

And Charlie, the wizard behind the curtains at Ocean View Restaurant? Turns out, his roots run deep too.

The walls of his restaurant are like a time machine, adorned with snapshots of Kure Beach’s journey through the ages.

Each photo holds a piece of history, and Charlie’s more than happy to dish out the details, alongside Chef Josh who serves up their mouthwatering hot strawberries and biscuits (a family recipe)—seriously, a must-try! (the picture in the background is Charlie’s mom)

Then there was this captivating encounter with a fellow diner who knew the legendary Hermit of Fort Fisher, Robert Harrill, on a personal level.

She shared that her father would often give the hermit rides to the grocery store to buy essentials like dog food and milk, and she was able to tag along for the ride.

the WWII Bunker on the Basin Trail in Kure Beach, NC where the Fort Fisher Hermit Lived for 17 years

Her personal accounts brought history right to my doorstep turning a distant legend into a neighbor, making the past feel remarkably present.

Now, if you’re in for more tales (and maybe a stiff drink), Bud & Joe’s Sandbar is calling your name.

I haven’t ventured there yet, but I’m willing to bet my last dollar that it’s a treasure trove of local lore to be discovered over a drink and a game of pool.

Sure, sightseeing is great, but it’s the people who give a place its soul.

Taking a moment to connect with the folks who call Kure Beach home adds a richness to my travels that no guidebook could ever match.

I might be an introvert, but trust me, breaking out of my shell for these chats is worth every awkward moment. It’s like collecting rare verbal souvenirs—each story, a precious memento of my own unique adventure.

Inside the Ocean View Restaurant in Kure Beach, NC

I urge you to do the same! Shift gears out of tourist mode and immerse yourself in the vibrant tapestry of local life. Swap generic postcards for real conversations, and include time for hidden gems known only to the locals.

By mingling with the folks who call Kure Beach home, you’ll unlock a treasure trove of stories that’ll add layers of depth to your experience.

Let their tales weave themselves into the fabric of your memories, making your time at Kure Beach all the richer for it.

So, step off the beaten path, wander into that cozy café, strike up a conversation with the person sitting next to you—it’s where the real magic happens. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

21. Coquina Outcrop

The Coquina Outcrop, Kure Beach, NC The only natural rock formation o the North Carolina Coast

Armed with my trusty tide chart and a thirst for coastal exploration, I was on a mission to uncover the mysteries of Kure Beach, North Carolina and check another adventure off of my NC Bucket List.

My target? The legendary Coquina Rock Outcrop, a unique geological wonder nestled between Kure Beach and Fort Fisher.

Here you’ll find the only natural rock formation on the North Carolina Coast and is only visible at the lowest possible tide of the day.

The Coquina Outcrops are rocks crafted by nature herself, composed of countless, crushed shells that have fused together over time, forming solid structures that stand as a testament to the enduring power of the sea.

The Coquina Outcrop is made up of crushed shells that have hardened over time

After learning of this gorgeous section of the NC coast, I promptly planned a day trip to Kure Beach to witness, with my own eyes, these ancient formations in all their glory.

But, as luck would have it, my first attempt was foiled by a minor mishap – a discrepancy in the tide chart left me a tad too late to see them.

My daughter and I at Kure Beach, NC on the search for the Coquina Outcrop

With a renewed sense of determination, we regrouped and my daughter and I returned the next day, after finding a different and more accurate tide chart online.

Let me tell you, the sight that greeted us was nothing short of magical.

As the waters receded, revealing the hardened shells beneath and offering a fresh buffet for the sea birds, a large shell caught my eye. It rolled gracefully onto the beach, right in front of my daughter, as if the sea itself were presenting us with a welcome gift.

As the waters receded, revealing the hardened shells beneath and offering a fresh buffet for the sea birds, a large shell caught my eye. It rolled gracefully onto the beach, right in front of my daughter, as if the sea itself were presenting us with a welcome gift.

I couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty of it all.

From the intricate patterns etched into the rock to the hidden treasures nestled within its crevices, every inch of the outcrop told a story millions of years in the making.

So, if you ever find yourself drawn to the shores of Fort Fisher, be sure to consult your tide chart and seek out this hidden gem. Trust me, the Coquina Rock Outcrop is a sight you won’t soon forget!

Kure Beach, NC FAQ

When is the best time to visit kure beach, nc.

“The ‘Best time to visit Kure Beach’ is kind of like picking your favorite ice cream flavor—totally subjective!

Winter vibes? If you dig quiet streets, crisp air, and don’t mind a few closed signs here and there, then winter’s your jam.

dolphin tours kure beach

It’s like having the whole beach to yourself, just you and the seagulls braving the chill.

Now, if you’re into that Goldilocks weather—not too hot, not too cold—and you’re okay with a sleepy town slowly waking up from its winter nap, then Spring or Fall is where it’s at.

It’s the perfect weather for strolling along the shore, searching for shells, maybe dipping your toes in the chilly water, and enjoying the town before, or right after, it’s in full swing.

dolphin tours kure beach

But hey, if you’re all about that summer hype—the warmth, the buzz of restaurants, shops, and events—then summer it is!

Just a heads up, though: remember that one main road that runs through the town? Yeah, it’s like Grand Central Station in July.

So, brace yourself for the crowds, even in this cozy little corner of the world. Choose wisely, beach lover!”

Where To See Dolphins In North Carolina – 2024 Guide

Where to see dolphins in North Carolina - featured image

Welcome to the beautiful coastal state of North Carolina, where the waters are home to some of the most playful and intelligent creatures on the planet – dolphins!

I love seeing dolphins out in the wild so when I heard that they’re common in North Carolina, of course I had to head over there to check it out.

Based on firsthand experience, the best place to spot dolphins in North Carolina is in Kitty Hawk which forms part of the Outer Banks .

To see the dolphins up close and personal, I’d recommend booking onto a kayaking tour as the expert guides will show you where to find dolphins without fail.

But wait, there’s more! In the rest of this article, I’ll be revealing all of the exact locations in North Carolina where you have a great chance of seeing dolphins.

Table of Contents

Best Places To See Dolphins In North Carolina

Map of North Carolina showing where to see dolphins.

There are actually many locations across North Carolina where sightings of wild dolphins are super common.

Below I’ve detailed all of these locations and included some handy tips that will drastically increase your chances of seeing them for yourself.

Where To See Dolphins In Outer Banks

The Outer Banks are a 200-mile string of barrier islands just off the coast of North Carolina that separate the Atlantic Ocean from the mainland.

Sightings of dolphins are common along the Outer Banks. Many bottlenose dolphins spend their summer in the waters of the Outer Banks and then migrate south for the winter.

As the Outer Banks covers 200 miles, there’s many locations within it where you can spot dolphins from their shores.

I’ve listed the best places below…

I found that by far the best place to see dolphins in the Outer Banks is at Kitty Hawk.

Kitty Hawk, located in the heart of the Outer Banks, is a beach town known for its woodland and variety of animal life. Dolphin sightings are outrageously common here.

On my recent trip to Kitty Hawk, I saw about 10 dolphins all within the space of 10 minutes! It was incredible and I felt so lucky.

Dolphin in North Carolina

I watched as they jumped up out of the water and then carried in their merry way to search for food.

Personally I think the best (and most fun) way to see the dolphins is to get out onto the water and luckily there’s so many different ways you can do that in Kitty Hawk.

Best Kitty Hawk Tours:

  • Kayaking Tour (top pick)
  • Stand-up Paddleboarding Tour
  • Surfing Lesson (suitable for beginners)

All of the above tours give you a super high chance of seeing a dolphin as you’ll be out on the water itself and you’ll be joined by an expert guide who knows the area well.

You’ll also get a much closer view of the dolphins out on the water compared to if you were just stood on the shore.

I personally ended up booking the kayaking tour and really enjoyed it. It was so easy to stop whenever we wanted to take a look at the dolphins and the guides were really fun.

The dolphins you’ll see in Kitty Hawk are Atlantic bottlenose dolphins.

Check out the video below of some dolphins playing in the ocean at Kitty Hawk:

Nag’s Head is a beach town and popular vacation spot that is known for its sandy beaches and towering sand dunes.

Hundreds of dolphins come to Nag’s Head each year and some of the regular visitors have even been given names.

Look out for ‘Onion’ and his family who were first spotted over 20 years ago and have been sighted there almost every year since. Onion is easily recognisable due to his damaged fin.

Unfortunately I wasn’t lucky enough to spot Onion at Nag’s Head but I did see around 7 or so other dolphins who all looked like they were having a great time.

Dolphins in North Carolina

You can view dolphins at a distance from the beaches of Nag’s Head but you may get a closer view by heading out on a kayak.

I personally opted for the kayak and saw way more dolphins than from the shore.

Check out the video below to see some of the many dolphins of Nag’s Head:

Hatteras Island

Hatteras Island is a large island that forms the southwestern tip of the Outer Banks. Dolphins are frequently spotted cruising along the shore or just off the island’s inlets.

You can spot the dolphins all over Hatteras Island on its many beaches, however one popular spot is in Hatteras Village.

Check out the video below of some dolphins spotted around Hatteras Island:

Where Else Can I See Dolphins In North Carolina?

It’s not just the Outer Banks that have a huge population of dolphins. You can also see these magnificent creatures elsewhere in the state.

Below I’ve listed all of the other places across North Carolina where you can see dolphins.

There are lots of dolphins present in the Wilmington area. Whilst you can’t swim with dolphins in Wilmington, you can see them from the shore of various beaches.

Wilmington is a city located on the southeastern coast of North Carolina.

I visited several beaches in the area and found that the best place to see dolphins in Wilmington was at nearby Wrightsville Beach . I saw 3 dolphins in the ocean from this beach.

One of the best ways to see them is by booking onto a boat tour . You can enjoy the scenic views of Wrightsville Beach and catch a glimpse of the dolphins at the same time.

You could also book a private tour just for you if you’d prefer.

Dolphins can also sometimes be spotted at the nearby Carolina Beach.

Check out the video below of a dolphin spotted at Wrightsville Beach:

Topsail Island

Topsail Island is a 26-mile barrier island located just off the coast of North Carolina. The island lies just 40 miles northeast of Wilmington.

For the best views of the dolphins, head down to Topsail Beach where you can often see dolphins swimming in groups, jumping out of the water and playing with each other.

When I visited, I was lucky enough to spot a group of dolphins playing together, splashing around happily.

There are many beaches on Topsail Island to choose from, you can hire an electric bike to easily get around the island.

You can see some dolphins just off of Topsail Island in the video below:

Beaufort is a small town on North Carolina’s eastern coast and forms part of the Crystal Coast.

Bottlenose dolphins can be seen in the waters surrounding Beaufort year-round and sightings are common.

In contrast to other locations in North Carolina, sightings of dolphins along the Crystal Coast are actually more frequent during the winter months (rather than the summer).

The best way to see them is by joining a boat tour in the area.

The same waters surround other places along the Crystal Coast including Morehead City, Atlantic Beach, Harkers Island and Shackleford Banks.

Dolphin sightings are also common in these locations too.

Check out the video below of a dolphin sighting in Beaufort:

Find out where you can see dolphins in Texas .

Cape Lookout National Seashore

The Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile stretch of islands that forms part of the Southern Outer Banks.

The islands here are largely undeveloped and attract visitors for their variety of wildlife, nature and sandy beaches. Bottlenose dolphins are frequently sighted in the area.

Best Time To See Dolphins In North Carolina

Whilst dolphins can be spotted all year round off the coast of North Carolina, the most frequent sightings occur during the summer months.

Dolphins tend to spend more time in the waters around North Carolina during the summer to raise their young.

The dolphins tend to arrive in May when they give birth to their young and they tend to remain here until late fall when they then move to warmer waters.

However, there are many areas around North Carolina where dolphins can be seen all year such as Hatteras Island.

The best time of day to see dolphins in North Carolina is in the morning and late afternoon as they tend to avoid the heat of the sun during the daytime.

Can You Swim With The Dolphins?

The dolphins present in the waters around North Carolina are wild dolphins . This means it’s not possible to swim with them.

Even though you can’t swim with or touch the dolphins, you can still get up close and personal with them and get some fantastic views either from the shore or from a boat or kayak.

Did you know you can also see dolphins in South Carolina ?

And that’s it!

That’s exactly where to see dolphins in North Carolina from the Outer Banks all the way to Wilmington.

If you’re lucky enough to spend some time with these beautiful creatures then I can assure you that it’ll be something you remember for a lifetime.

Victory Beach Vacations

Victory Beach Vacations

Visitors who are on the hunt for the postcard-perfect vacation rental in the heart of the Carolina Beach or Kure Beach area will find an enticing selection and plenty of friendly customer service when they rent through Victory Beach Vacations. Based in Carolina Beach in the coastal Cape Fear region, Victory Beach Vacations has more than 100 vacation rentals in all shapes and sizes to ensure that every vacationing family can find their dream home away from home on the beach.   When you book your Cape Fear getaway with Victory Beach Vacations, the fun doesn’t end when you leave the beach, it continues with an array of privately-owned properties outfitted with all of the amenities needed for a fabulous beach vacation.   Jenna Lanier, General Manager, explains that her family first opened the rental and property management business in 2002. At the forefront of Victory Beach operations is Lanier’s mother, Caroline Meeks. Meeks is both the Broker in Charge and co-owner with husband, Buck Meeks, who manages the Field Services team with Lanier’s husband, Scott.   For nearly 20 years, the Victory Beach team has worked tirelessly to establish a network of top-of-the-line rental properties for Cape Fear visitors to enjoy. “As far as our properties go,” explains Lanier, “they are all updated, well-furnished and appointed. “We have always performed post-cleaning inspections and since the pandemic, have put freshly laundered duvets over all of the comforters between rentals.”   Lanier emphasizes how important the guests experience is “we strive to give our guests a relaxing, stress free, memorable vacation.” This emphasis on customer service has led to Victory Beach Vacations having a 4.8 Google rating with over 300 reviews by happy owners and guests. In addition to Victory Beach’s superior sanitation practices, the company offers properties for every type of visitor. Choose from luxury oceanfront houses and condos to more reasonbly priced 2nd row properties with oceanviews. Many properties include pools and hot tubs as well, perfect for outdoor entertaining, and many are dog friendly.   Lanier also notes that all properties are within walking or driving distance to Pleasure Island’s main attractions – Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. The former, as described by Lanier, is the more commercialized of the two destinations and features a boardwalk, outdoor dining options and a plethora of weekly activities including fireworks, live music, amusement park pop-ups, and movies under the stars. Kure Beach offers a more residential feel with its fishing pier, intimate restaurants and family favorite, North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher.More water fun awaits, too. “There is a harbor and a canal that feed into the intercoastal. We have several properties on the harbor so guests can bring their boat, kayak, [or jet ski] and travel between islands,” says Lanier.   A stay with Victory Beach Vacations is an annual pilgrimage for most. “A large percentage of guests are previous guests. Some even reserve the same property for the next year as they’re checking out,” Lanier says. “It’s almost like it’s their personal vacation home.”   Even before guests arrive at their vacation destination, the Victory Beach Vacations’ website greets them with a live beach cam and exquisite aerial footage of both Carolina and Kure Beaches.
