Explore Geauga County in Drive-it-Yourself Tour May 9, 2013

Put your foot to the pedal and take in the sights, sounds and tastes of Geauga County Saturday during the Spring Drive-it-Yourself Tour.

Being National Tourism Week, a good way to celebrate could be exploring the nooks and crannies of the county 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., said Lynda Nemeth, spokesperson for the Geauga County Tourism Office.

Her group has mapped out a drive-it-yourself tour with 25 stops at locally owned independent businesses each offering something special from food samples to discount coupons and spring plants to golf rounds.

It’s definitely worth it, said Sandy Pavick, of Newbury Township.

During last year’s tour, she led a group comprised of 13 members of her church, Mayfield United Methodist Church in Chester Township, many of whom live in Eastern Cuyahoga County.

“They had never been to Middlefield before and had definitely never shopped at an Amish store before,” she said. “We ate lunch at the Crossroads Country Cafe and they loved watching an Amish woman prepare their meal.”

She said the tour was a great way to introduce her friends to Geauga County.

“It was great fun to take them to a few places where I regularly shop, such as White House Chocolates and the Middlefield Cheese Co-op,” she said.

Pavick’s group visited 10 of the 25 stops, qualif-ying them for a prize drawing at the conclusion of the tour.

At each stop, they got their tour card stamped along with receiving free samples and discounts on items.

Among the places they visited was a rug shop where they received decorative pins to wear.

“I still see some of the ladies wearing their pins to church,” Pavick said.

At the end of the day, they entered their stamped cards in the drawing and Pavick’s card was pulled for the second place prize.

It was a gift basket worth $375 in items and gift cards from the merchants.

Several items in the basket that stand out were tickets to a play in Madison, a gift card for the Red Maple Inn, a gift card for fresh meat at a meat store and, of course, a quart of locally produced maple syrup.

“It was wonderful,” Pavick said. “I enjoyed the prizes all year and still have one more gift card I need to use before we take the tour this year.”

The tour also benefitted the parti-cipating merchants. Pavick said many of the members of her church have gone back to visit some of the shops.

“They are return customers and have taken their friends there,” she said.

Pavick plans to lead her church group on this year’s tour.

“We’re very excited about it,” she said. “They’ve added some new stops we want to check out. We want to visit the Amish Bakery and Craft stop and have the opportunity to go inside an Amish home for tea and sandwiches.”

This year’s tour features a “Feeding Geauga County’s Economy” theme encouraging participants to shop locally and support local businesses, Nemeth said.

The tour ends at 3 p.m. at Middlefield Market with music by Northern Comfort Band, snacks, a silent auction and the drawing for the gift baskets, which begins at 4 p.m.

Participants must be present to win.

A list of the all the stops and maps are available at tourgeauga.com, by calling the tourism office at 440-632-1538 or at any of the participating locations.

Great Time and Goals Achieved at the Drive It Yourself Tour

Do you love living in Geauga County?

I know I do. I have lived here my entire life and can’t really imagine living anywhere else. The people here are so kind and welcoming. You can’t beat the scenery and the changing of the seasons.

Geauga County Tourism’s Annual Spring Drive It Yourself Tour is the perfect way to experience Geauga County. You start out with a list of 25 businesses, the specials they are offering for this event, and a map. We spent Friday night mapping out the route we would take to try to hit all 25 businesses in a 5 hour time period. We attempted this last year and were only able to get to 17 businesses.

So here is the list of all of the businesses that we went to in order:

[new_royalslider id=”26″]

Sirna’s Pizzeria

Blazin bills, auburn pointe greenhouse, the pond skating rink, geauga feed, sharon james cellars, geauga county habitat for humanity restore, carriage trade boutique, for the birds, wildlife & more, antiques on the square, classic country consignments, kent state geauga, the barn treasures, crossroads country cafe, healthy pursuit wellness center, cre ekside lawn furniture, miller’s furniture, end of the commons general store, middlefield original cheese co-op, hershberger’s housewares, pinecraft storage barns, scheid’s enterprise, the craft cupboard, rustic rewind, we did it all 25 stops with time to spare.

Click here to see a full album of pictures from the event!

The Real Deal String Band

We met up with the other participants and a few members of the Geauga News Team at the finale at the Middlefield Market. The Real Deal String Band played live music for all of the participants to enjoy. Several tables were set up for silent auction items and Chinese auction items. There were a lot of really great donations from all of the businesses that were involved in the tour. We bought $10 worth of raffle tickets and ended up winning a quart of maple syrup from the Burton Log Cabin, which is worth more than the $10 we spent, and it was exactly what I wanted!

Three prize baskets were loaded with goodies and gift certificates for the three big winners. 1st prize, a $660 value, was won by Rosanne Williamson of Middlefield; 2nd prize, a $400 value, was won by Carol Wolf of Concord; and 3rd prize, a $350 value, was won by Karen Fuller of Newbury.

Thank you to everyone that was involved in this tour. We sure had a great time and can’t wait for next year!

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.
