Visitors to the UAE whose visas are about to expire can extend their stay by up to 60 days if necessary.

Anyone who does not go through the proper procedures and stays beyond the validity of their visit visa will be subject to fines of Dh50 ($13.61) a day.

Visitors who stay beyond the time allowed without renewing their visas can also be arrested for staying in the country illegally. Inspection campaigns are regularly carried out to catch offenders.

Here The National explains how to avoid these fines by applying for a visa extension.

No more 'grace period'

Visitors to Dubai will no longer be granted a 10-day grace period when their tourist visa expires, so travel agents, The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) are urging visitors to apply for a 30-day extension visa before their original visa expires.

This extension can be applied for twice, resulting in an additional 60-day visit.

“People wishing to stay in the UAE after their visit visa expires should apply for a 30-day extension visa to stay legally in the country,” said an ICP call centre agent.

“They can apply for a second 30-day extension, maximum.”

More than 14 million people visited Dubai in 2022. Reuters

The authority encouraged visitors to arrange the extension in advance of the current visa expiring, and warned of the upper limit for number of days spent in the country.

“People should be aware that the total duration of stay within a year should not exceed 120 days,” the agent said.

How much does it cost?

According to the ICP website, the cost of extending a visit visa is Dh610.

However, according to Amer, an immigration service centre, the cost for an extension of a visa issued by GDRFA-Dubai is Dh800.

Fees can vary between Dh800 and Dh1,100 when applying through a travel agency.

Where do I go to get the extension?

“The 30-day extension visa can be issued by the same travel agency that issued the visa for the customer in the first place," said Roshan Davis, manager of Golden Talent Tourism Agency in Dubai.

Visitors who obtained a visa on arrival can apply for an extension via the ICP or GDRFA-Dubai websites, or customer service centres.

Anyone with a visa on arrival can also take their passport to Dubai airport immigration in the Terminal 3 arrival area, Mr Davis added.

What are the required documents?

Holders of a visit visa should send a copy of their original visa and passport to the travel agent for extension. They can also visit the ICP or GDRFA-Dubai website to apply for an extension and the visa will be extended within 48 hours.

The passport should have a validity of at least six months to apply for an extension.

For how many days can validity be extended?

The service allows visit visa holders to extend their visa for up to 60 days, in two applications of 30-day extensions.

Who is the tourist visa for?

Those who do not qualify for a visa on arrival or visa-free entry to the UAE can apply for a tourist visa.

Citizens from 69 countries and states are eligible for a visa on arrival in the UAE . Females below the age of 18 are not eligible to apply for a tourist visa unless they are travelling with their parents.

How can I apply for a tourist visa?

Visitors from countries that do not have a visa-on-arrival arrangement with the UAE can apply for their visas in advance through a travel agency or through the airline.

STOCK Tourists Dubai Madinat Jumeirah

Dubai: If you are not ready to go back home and want to explore the UAE for a little longer before the summer break ends, you may be wondering what you can do about your tourist visa that is about to expire.

Tourists in the UAE can extend their stay in the UAE by applying for a visa extension through travel agencies or immigration authorities in the UAE.

Here is all you need to know about the tourist visa extension process in the UAE.

How long is a UAE tourist visa for?

Depending on the duration of your visa, you can stay in the UAE for 30 or 90 days . The UAE also recently announced the five-year multiple entry tourist visa, which has its own requirements and regulations on how long you can stay in the UAE for each visit.

The information provided below is for the 30- and 90-day visas.

Can I extend my stay in the UAE?

According to Nissar Pattambi, managing partner at Mihran Tours and Travels, the 30-day or 90-day tourist visa visa can be extended for 30 days, twice. This means that if you were in the UAE on a 30-day visa, you can extend it twice, giving you the option of a total stay for 90 days – 30 days on the original visa, and two extensions of 30 days each.

Where do I apply for the extension?

To apply for the tourist visa extension, you can choose the following options:

1. Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP)

You can apply for the extension online through the ICP website be following these steps:

- Visit https://smartservices.icp.gov.ae/echannels/web/client/guest/index.html#/onArrivalVisaDashboard - To extend your visa, you will have the option to enter your tourist visa information in three ways: • Passport information • Visa file number - you can find the visa file number on your tourist e-visa document. • Unified number (UID) - Make the payment as per your extension request. - You will receive the extended visa, if approved, through an email notification.

2. Amer centre

If your visa was issued in Dubai, you can visit an Amer centre, which processes all visa requests in Dubai. You would need to take a copy of your original visa along with your passport. Once you have made the payment your application will be processed.

3. Typing centre

There are also several typing centres in the UAE that are registered to process visa applications. You can apply for the visa extension through any of these centres.

4. Travel agency

You can also apply for the extension through a travel and tourism agency in the UAE.

"You can do it from any travel agency in the UAE. The tourist doesn't need to use the same agency that issued the visa,” Pattambi said.

You can do it from any travel agency in the UAE. The tourist doesn't need to use the same agency that issued the visa. - Nissar Pattambi, managing partner at Mihran Tours and Travels

When should I extend my tourist visa?

"If you plan to extend your tourist visa, you must do it before your current tourist visa expires. If you fail to do this, you will incur overstaying fines in the UAE. Therefore, you should check the expiry date of your tourist visa on your entry permit to avoid this," Adnan Khan, marketing executive at Siddique Haider Corporate Services Provide, said.

He advised applicants to apply for the extension at least seven days before the date of expiry.

What documents do I provide for tourist visa extension?

According to Khan, here are the documents you should provide:

• Previous tourist visa copy • Passport copy • Clear passport size photo

According to Khan, when you are extending your visa, you will not be required to provide proof of accommodation or a copy of your airline ticket.

Are you a student who recently graduated from the UAE and is looking to sponsor your visa based on your academics? The Golden Visa issued by UAE is a long-term, renewable residence visa that enables you to stay in the country for a duration of 5 or 10 years, depending on the application category.

Students or graduates who excel in academics can apply for this visa. Khaleej Times spoke to an Amer agent to outline the application process for applicants in the UAE.

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

Am I eligible?

Applicants must apply for the Golden visa within the same emirate where their current visa was issued.

University graduates

Outstanding graduates of universities in the UAE

According to the UAE’s government portal, students of universities in the UAE may be granted a Golden visa for a period of 10 years, if:

  • It has not been more than 2 years since graduation
  • The university must be rated either A or B class by Ministry of Education
  • A recommendation letter from the university or an accredited graduation certificate or an accredited academic record stating that the student’s cumulative GPA (CGPA) is no less than 3.5 for class A universities and no less than 3.8 for class B universities is submitted.

Outstanding graduates of foreign universities

According to the UAE’s government portal, students in foreign universities may be granted a Golden visa for a period of 10 years, if:

  • Graduation certificate is accredited by the Ministry of Education
  • The university is rated among the best 100 universities global according to the rating system recognized by Ministry of Education
  • The student’s cumulative GPA is not less than 3.5

High school students

High school students are eligible for a Golden Visa of 5 years, if:

  • The student is a national-level topper (with a minimum grade of 95 per cent in public or private secondary school)
  • A recommendation letter from Ministry of Education (Emirates Schools Establishment) is submitted.

The Golden Visa is for a duration of 5 years, but may be extended if the student is enrolled in one of the majors or colleges in the country that requires a study period of more than 5 years.

How do I know if my university is rated A or B?

To know the university's classification, the applicant can access the university website, or contact their admin department.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, a Technical Support Specialist at Amer247 messaging platform said:

However, for applications through Amer, the classification is "specifically contingent upon the governing authority under which the educational institution" is based.

This classification can significantly influence the documents required.

The support specialist added: "Notably, for outstanding university students under KHDA, the school must liaise with KHDA for certificate attestation, followed by MOFA attestation, and the issuance of an equivalency certificate to conform with the mandatory Ministerial grading system, typically graded out of 4 or 5."

How do I apply?

Students can expect a faster process if they first receive ICP nomination approval and then visit an Amer centre. According to the Amer agent, the application process can indeed be "expedited and made more efficient" if the student obtains a UAE ICP nomination approval prior to visiting Amer, or utilises the GDRFA platform.

The agent said that the GPA threshold is set at 3.8 to "facilitate a seamless application process." However, certain universities in the UAE are categorized by ICP as exempt from the 3.8 benchmark.

Graduates from these universities can apply for the Golden visa with a GPA of 3.5 if they secure a nomination from ICP, he added.

To apply for a Golden Visa in Dubai, visit icp.com

  • On the homepage, stay logged out. Scroll until you see the left side menu, and click on “Golden Visa” under Services.
  • Click on “start service” under “high school students/college students”
  • Then, go to “Visa – Golden Residence – Nomination Request for Golden Residence – New Request” and click on “Start Service”
  • Fill in the application form, attach the required documents and pay the application fees.
  • Once you receive ICP approval for the nomination request, take a screenshot of the approval email and head to your nearest Amer service centre, with the required documents. Alternatively, you can apply through the GDRFA website, smart application or Customer Happiness Centres.

According to Amer's technical support specialist, students holding the Golden Visa can "extend the visa to their parents, spouses, and children without any prejudice."

European Union adopts more favourable Schengen visa rules for Indians

Indian Nationals can now apply for a multiple entry Schengen visa with longer validity

On 18 April 2024, the European Commission adopted specific rules on the issuing of multiple entry visas to Indian nationals, which are more favourable than the standard rules of the Visa Code that applied to date. This new visa ‘cascade’ regime for Indian nationals residing in India who apply for Schengen (short-stay) visas in India will provide easier access to visas with multi-year validity for travellers with an established travel history, if the passport validity allows.

According to the newly adopted visa “cascade” regime for India, Indian nationals can now be issued long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after having obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years. The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining. During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals.
