Chase the solar eclipse in Patagonia, Argentina: A things-to-do guide

Chase the solar eclipse in Patagonia, Argentina: A things-to-do guide

Patagonia, Argentina , is renowned for its awe-inspiring natural landscapes, a place where the majestic Andes converge with the Southern Atlantic. This distinct environment is a haven for those seeking adventure and exploration. Notably, Patagonia is among the premier locations globally to observe solar eclipses. This guide will assist you in planning your journey to witness this rare celestial event in Patagonia.

Best viewing spots for the eclipse

To fully experience the solar eclipse , visit central Patagonia. El Calafate and Bariloche are prime spots, known for their picturesque landscapes and clear skies, heightening your chances for an unobstructed view during eclipse season. It's wise to arrive a few days in advance to select the ideal location for watching this rare celestial event unfold in its entirety.

Essential gear for eclipse watching

Watching a solar eclipse requires more than just showing up. You'll need special solar viewing glasses to protect your eyes from harmful rays. Additionally, consider bringing a tripod-mounted camera or telescope with a solar filter if you're into photography or want a closer look at the eclipse's phases. Dressing in layers is also recommended as temperatures can fluctuate throughout the event.

Exploring Patagonian culture and nature

While you're in Patagonia for the eclipse, take some time to explore what else this region has to offer. Visit Los Glaciares National Park near El Calafate to see stunning glaciers or take a boat tour on Argentino Lake for breathtaking views of icebergs and mountain peaks. In Bariloche, indulge in local chocolate and explore its Swiss-like architecture amidst vast lakes and forests.

Planning your trip around weather conditions

The weather in Patagonia can be unpredictable with sudden changes that could affect your eclipse experience. The best time to visit for clear skies is during Argentine spring or autumn—September through November or March through May respectively. Keep an eye on local weather forecasts as your trip approaches and be prepared with both sun protection and waterproof clothing.

Some of the excursions on offer include:

Peninsula del Toro Trek Leaving Patagonia Camp, we will travel to El Bote bay which is approximately 40 minutes by car. The peninsula is another of our private walks. The trail runs between lakes and lagoons, between areas of cattle grazing and deciduous forest, with sudden views of Paine massif and full of pioneering history. An incredible place for bird watching and a place to truly connect with nature. After 5 hrs of walking we will arrive back to the Camp without transfer of vehicle.

Claudio Lagoon & Escondida Lagoon On this trek, we will travel 20 minutes from the hotel to the Grey lookout sector, from where we will start our trek to the Claudio Lagoon sector. Later we will reach the Escondida Lagoon and move towards the Serrano Valley sector, walking through areas of Magellan Forest with the view of the snowdrifts in the distance and beautiful views of the Torres del Paine Massif.

Kayak in Toro Lake or in Bonita Lagoon This experience is another treasure that Patagonia Camp has for you! Our team of guides will give you an introductory course with basic rowing techniques and safety instructions. After being prepared with all necessary equipment, we will go to the shores of Lake Toro, the largest of the region with its pure waters and tonalities that vary between deep blue and intense turquoise. We will paddle along the bays and around islets accompanied by the extraordinary view of the Patagonian landscape, not to be missed! Note: this excursion is subject to weather conditions and could be affected if the conditions are not optimal, follow the instructions of our guide team, thank you!

Los Azules Viewpoint (Self-Guided) There are many special places to discover around our facilities. Bonita Lagoon is ideal to admire and feel the rhythms of nature. You can venture into an unexplored area, excellent for contemplation and relaxation. You will have the possibility of walking on a gentle path with little unevenness. All the way you will be accompanied by coigüe forests and birds of the region, conjugated with the view of the Paine massif, the Tenerife hill and the varied blue colors of Porteño Lake, Toro Lake and Bonita and Maravilla Lagoons.

Tres Lagunas Trail The W Circuit is without a doubt one of the park’s most iconic routes. Please keep in mind that this a physically demanding hike, that will cover approximately 20kms in 8 hours. We will begin in a catamaran that will cross Lake Pehoe, at the foothills of the Paine Grande. From here, a 7.5km hike up to the Italian campsite, and from their another 230 meters ascending through the valley between forests and the glacier. The views of the valley, the glacier and the pampas behind you will leave you speechless. Please note that this tour is subject to the Lake Pehoe crossing schedule which is available from November 1st to March 31. Crossing fees are an additional 50USD per person.

Toro Waterfall Hike (Self-Guided) A few meters from the Camp and inside our facilities, you can enjoy a beautiful and solitary place. The trail starts at only 500 meters from the access, bordering the immense Lake Toro, which in all its splendor will show blue and turquoise reflections and shines that change every minute according to the light. After walking for approximately 40 minutes, you reach the Toro waterfall, surrounded by native forest where a variety of birds perched to observe the passing hikers, an ideal place for birdwatchers! When visiting this secret place, you can take beautiful photographs from another perspective of the Paine massif, Los Cuernos, the mountain range and the Lake of the Toro. In short, this walk gives you the opportunity to visit an intimate place and share one of our romantic landscapes, which only Patagonia Camp can offer you.

Fishing "Catch & Release" on the Shore of Lake Toro (Self-Guided) Patagonia Camp is located on the shores of Lake Toro, one of the most extensive in the Region of Magallanes with around 202 km2. Thanks to its irregular geography it has numerous islands, bays and river mouths, making it a must-see destination for fishing lovers! In this area, it is possible to find brown and rainbow trout and the fish can weigh between 1 and 8 kilos. The fishing that is done is off-shore and in “eco-friendly” manner of catch and release as to not to interrupt the natural cycle of the trout as they swim up the Serrano river. You will enjoy this relaxing sport in the vicinity and comfort of your Yurt. Note: The fishing license can be obtained online and it is the fisher’s responsibility to obtain it. Consult for support to obtain a license to the reception staff. Fishing season between October 15 and April 15.

Other excursions are available and will be discussed with you with your guide locally.

Luxury Cruises to Patagonia

Embark on a luxury cruise to Patagonia to uncover the untamed beauty and unique culture of this remote South American region. From Ushuaia to the rugged landscapes of Tierra del Fuego, you'll be mesmerized by the pristine scenery at the very tip of the continent. Visit penguin colonies, take a scenic hike through dense forests, or go whale watching while on this unforgettable South America cruise .

Patagonia cruises will bring you to awe-inspiring destinations like Ushuaia, gateway to mountain scenery and wooded islands. Visit a penguin colony from Punta Arenas, and in Punta Montt, take in the breathtaking scenery of glaciers, mountains, and waterfalls.

Patagonia Cruise Highlights

Naturalist Charles Darwin spent four years in and around Patagonia in the 19th century, an experience that helped shape his theories on evolution. See Patagonia in his eyes through the abundant wildlife. The nutrient-rich waters of the south Atlantic attract humpback and southern right whales to the region. You could also spot seals basking on the rocks. From Punta Arenas, take a trip to Magdalena Island to watch thousands of enchanting Magellanic penguins going about their business.

No trip to Patagonia is complete without marveling at mighty glaciers. The islands and fjords of Chilean Patagonia are dotted with vast rivers of ice, including the Grey Glacier, which can be seen from your ship or up close on an excursion. With its creaking, blue-white face, the Serrano Glacier is another great option for viewing, especially when chunks of ice calve off into the water where the glacier meets the sea.

Argentina and Chile share the region of Patagonia, and both have influenced the local cuisine. Try dishes like fresh-caught Chilean sea bass, Argentine "bife de chorizo", and delicious minced meat and egg empanadas while you're in port. The most prized local dish is spit-roast lamb, slow cooked and full of flavor. You’ll see asado restaurants in every port offering this delicacy. You'll also have the chance to sample award-winning wines from both countries.

A spectacle in the sky: 2020 solar eclipse in Patagonia

There are a number of incredible natural wonders around the world that can be the perfect travel inspiration for even the most discerning of travelers, but many people forget to look to the sky…

For example, the 2020 solar eclipse presents an excellent excuse to visit South America. As well as witnessing this wondrous natural wonder, it’s a chance to visit nature-rich Patagonia and experience the natural phenomenon among spectacular surroundings.

Seeing The 2020 Solar Eclipse

This year’s solar eclipse took place on July 2nd. Adventurous travelers from across the globe planned trips to watch the big reveal in Chile’s Atacama Desert, under the clearest skies in the world.

If you missed it this year, don’t worry! It’s happening again in 2020 and it promises to be longer next time, lasting around four minutes and 33 seconds at its climax. Plus, as its due to happen on December 14th (during South American summertime), there’s less chance of cloudy skies and rain – bonus!

eclipse travel patagonia

Blue Parallel’s customized eclipse journey takes you to the otherworldly landscapes of Argentina’s Patagonia, characterized by emerald green lakes and snow-capped mountains.

We start in Isla Victoria, an island as big as Manhattan with views of the picture perfect Lake District. While in the region, we’ll  go deer spotting during hikes through wooded forests to beautiful blue lagoons – the perfect introduction to life in the Lake District. Adding to this luxury Argentina travel experience are gourmet meals al fresco with shimmering lake views…

eclipse travel patagonia

That’s just the start of it; the magic in the sky takes place during part two of the private Patagonia tour . Journey with us through the ethereal landscapes of Northern Patagonia to an exclusive campsite set up near Santo Tomas town. Here you’ll dine under the stars ahead of the big day, which starts with an optional hike through forested trails for the early risers before meeting a personal eclipse concierge back at the luxury camp.

The astronomy expert is on hand with eclipse glasses, yoga mats, and a high-tech telescope, making sure your view of the natural phenomenon is safe, comfortable and memorable. And drum roll please…the moment the moon begins to eclipse the sun happens at 11.45am, followed by the total eclipse at 1.07pm. By 2.35pm, the show is over. Or the part in the sky is, anyway.

Your luxury Patagonia trip continues back in Bariloche, where you can spend more time exploring the shimmering shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi, hike to the beyond-picturesque look-out point in the national park, (and for those who dare, squeeze in a rappelling excursion over a giant boulder), always accompanied by your very own expert local guide.

eclipse travel patagonia

It turns out watching the sun and moon collide while simultaneously enjoying Blue Parallel’s white glove service is an attractive prospect for many discerning travelers interested in luxury Argentina tours. Enthusiasm for Blue Parallel’s customized solar eclipse tours has been huge, founder and President Emmanuel Burgio told Bloomberg. “It’s a natural phenomenon [people] are going to be able to see and enjoy,” he explains. “The fact that this only happens a few times in a lifetime makes it an item to check off their to-do list.”

In a world where things can sometimes feel out of control, perhaps the greatest luxury of all is watching nature continue to do it’s thing – a reminder of Earth’s immense beauty and power. So, see you in December 2020?

This is a journey through a breathtaking realm where nature’s spectacle is on full display. You trek through the heart of Chilean Patagonia which presents a kaleidoscope of landscapes: from the jagged peaks of the Paine Massif that pierce the sky, to the serene azure of glacial lakes and the vibrant greens of dense forests.

Every stride reveals a mind-blowing such as the ethereal Grey Glacier, the sweeping expanse of the Patagonian steppe, or the mirror-like waters of Lake Nordenskjöld.

Tusker Patagonia Trek

An Untamed Wonder

Our trek starts in the wild and remote northern reaches of Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park, where we camp amidst nature’s raw beauty.  We hike the magical “O” circuit, and are rewarded with an immersive experience in one of the worlds’ most spectacular wildernesses.  It’s an adventure that tests your limits and enriches your soul, leaving an indelible mark on all you wander its path.

Tusker Trail Torres del Paine

The Towers (Torres)

These colossal granite monoliths thrust upwards, their jagged peaks a testament to nature’s raw power. Carved by glaciers and sculpted by time, they are a hauntingly beautiful reminder of the untamed wilderness, where every climb, every step, is a dance with danger and beauty in equal measure.

Grey  Glacier

Grey Glacier is a colossal masterpiece of ice and time. Its massive blue walls stretch for miles, capturing the imagination with their otherworldly beauty. As it creaks and groans, shedding icebergs into the emerald waters of Lake Grey, it is a magnificent spectacle that leaves one in profound awe of Earth’s frozen wonders.

The Challenge

The Paine Massif

The Paine Massif in Chile, an ethereal masterpiece of the Andes, casts a spell that defies description. Its rugged spires, clad in ancient glaciers, pierce the heavens like cathedral spires. The deep azure of its lakes mirrors the sky, creating a surreal world where Earth and sky converge in a harmonious ballet.  As the ever-shifting Patagonian weather dances around these peaks, a sense of wonder envelops the soul. In the presence of the Paine Massif, time seems to stand still, and the heart is filled with an indescribable awe for the profound beauty of our planet’s most enchanting secrets.

Nestled at the southern tip of Chile, Torres del Paine National Park is a rugged jewel in the crown of Patagonia located at 50.9423° S and 73.4068° W. This remote wilderness spans a staggering 925 square miles (2,422 sq. km) with a landscape as diverse as it is awe-inspiring. The park’s location, some 70 miles (112 km) north of Puerto Natales, places it on the very doorstep of the formidable Southern Ice Field.

In this land of extremes, the seasons are mercurial. Summers (December to February) offer long days and longer daylight hours,  drawing adventurers from far and wide. Winters (June to August), however, are a brutal test of endurance, with biting cold and fierce winds that conspire to challenge even the hardiest souls. Tusker’s trekking dates skirt the edges of these seasons to maximize the better conditions, and avoid the trekking crowds.  Seasons here are not mere calendar dates; they are chapters in a wild, unpredictable story that keeps drawing explorers back, year after year.

You depart the serene shores of Lake Pehoe, ascending a trail that skirts the picturesque Lake Skottsberg, meandering through dense forests toward the awe-inspiring French Valley. Witness the landscape’s transformation, with trails growing wetter, boggier, and forests denser, all against the stunning backdrop of the Paine mountain range’s granite wall.

Prepare to be enchanted by the valley’s enclosed grandeur, a natural amphitheater framed by imposing granite peaks, graced with the sparkling waters of lakes Pehoe, Skottsberg, Toro, and Nordenskjold. You navigate challenging terrain, traversing boggy trails and a dry riverbed, surrounded by rich forests and moraine.

After a day rich in exploration and stunning scenery, descend the valley towards the cozy embrace of Refugio Los Cuernos. Here, charming 2-person private cabins await, each with a balcony and log-burning stove, providing a perfect, tranquil end to an adventurous day.
