Midlands’ Indie Rockers from the UK, Editors, have spent the last decade and a bit releasing two Platinum selling albums that have earned them an international following, eight UK Top 40 Singles, amassing over two million albums sales worldwide.

Based in the very middle of England in what some would called the second city of England – Birmingham, Editors have made such a name for themselves over the course of their career, cementing their status as a successful indie rock band. It all began when the band crossed paths studying Music Technology at Staffordshire University, but decided very quickly after their formation that their degrees weren’t the most relevant career choices for them and continued to perform around the Midlands and the surrounding areas. At this point in their career they were known as Pilot, which was great and, a memorable name to spread the name of the band but a Scottish band unfortunately already took it, so they changed it to The Pride and continued to build up their fan base, featuring in Fused Magazine, and releasing a six-track EP. Through word of mouth, they became such a successful unsigned band, and then had the opportunity to play at the Birmingham O2 Academy, which thirty A&R reps attended. It really was the start of something new fore this outfit.

After signing to a label based in Newcastle, everything began to take shape with the band playing on the festival circuits, and then releasing their full-length debut album “The Back Room”, which became a Platinum selling album, featuring all six songs from their six-track EP, such as “Munich”, “Blood” and “Lights”. It’s no wonder that Editors keep doing what they’re doing. They truly are a pride of the Midlands, UK.

Live reviews

A brilliant, brilliant concert in Zagreb. The previous one - in 2014 - was excellent and I honestly thought it would not be matched, especially since the new album did not sit well with me. I've seen Editors three times before and I thought I've seen it all. Boy, was I wrong.

From the first second, it was simply awesome. The band seemed to be in a good mood, the sound was crisp and clear, and the venue was packed. I could try to find words to describe the performance - energetic, taut, exuberant - but no words can do it justice.

The choice of songs was almost a greatest hits list. I particularly liked the acoustic version of Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors, with Racing Rats and Papillon close second in terms of sheer brilliance. Almost two full hours fantastic music from a fantastic band with more than a handful of magic moments.

I honestly don't remember enjoying Tom's signing that much in previous concerts, either. I could not help wondering what made his singing so much better, and I don't have an explanation. Maybe I was just overwhelmed.

This concert easily makes it into my top ten list of all time, maybe even top 5, and I've been to a few concerts in my life.

I am slightly afraid of the next Editors concert, as I don't see how they can do better than this :-).

Editors, possibly the most underrated band there is?

Tom Smith and the band closed their tour of the UK in Nottingham last November to a sold out Rock City crowd. Performing tracks from their latest album, 'The Weight Of Your Love,' as well previous releases such as 'The Back Room,' 'An End Has A Start' and 'In This Light On This Evening,' Editors played out a spotless set to an ever pleased Nottingham crowd.

Highlights from the set being 'Fingers In The Factories,' 'All Sparks,' 'Bullets,' 'Bones,' 'Formaldehyde' and undoubtedly the set closer 'Papillon.' From start to end Editors wowed the crowd, raised them from the ground and got them all singing in chorus with lead singer Tom. Editors are one incredible and mind blowing band, even more so live and most definitely deserve a lot more acknowledgement as well to be headlining festivals all over the world, a band with a catalog of brilliant albums such as Editors would usually be on the Pyramid at Glastonbury on the Sunday night, but unfortunately for Editors it hasn't yet turned out that way. But if Michael and Emily Eavis where to have been at Rock City, Editors would've been first on the bill without a doubt.

Last year at Latitude Festival one English rock band from Stafford performed a sub-headline spot that dwarfed all other performers of the Friday in Henham Park. The quintet had been cruelly billed bellow new kids on the block Two Door Cinema Club which seemed unjust as Editors have over a decade of experience working the live circuit and festivals. A short few days before the event TDCC were forced to pull out and the band found themselves opening for controversial pop songstress Lily Allen.

The atmosphere was mixed from the offset as the pop fans gather for their spots whilst the hardcore rock fans huddle around the barrier. In the open air of the Obelisk Arena the band wins over even the most uninterested of bystander with immaculate renditions of their hits including 'All Sparks' and 'Papillon' whilst successfully showcasing new material in the form of 'Nothing' and 'A Ton of Love'. It was a difficult billing at the best of times yet Editors capitalised on the free nature of the festival and their heightened platform to win over the entire event and by the sounds of shouted choruses to 'Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors' it would seem they succeeded.

Editors were amazing. Although I expected a more "falling in love" type of concert, I was amazed to attend a very energetic and party live show! Tom Smith was at his best and the new album integrated very well with the rest of the setlist. The only backdrop of the show was the problem in the sound (probably coming from some cables) which pissed off not only the audience but the band themselves. You wouldn't expect such issue arising at a venue such as Apollo but still.. Overall if it wasn't for this issue, it would have been an amazing night.

Absolutely fantastic concert in Barcelona, at Razzmatazz. A small venue but with great athmosphere and a perfect sound!

Editors proved to be very talented and great live performers. The setlist was just perfect, combining In Dream songs with all time favourites.

The Twilight Sad supported the band and provided a set with 7 fantastic songs, especially those from their fantastic last album.

Very disappointing concert after seeing them live several times before and being really impressed with the band. The sound was murky, with the bass far too dominant that it drowned out all other instruments. Previous shows had a changing pace with a great mix of rock, electronic and acoustic based songs. This time it was unrelenting noise and a lack of subtlety. With the exception of Russell Leetch who smiled throughout the gig, the band seemed to be going through the motions of yet another performance. Hoped for better.

My all time favourite band, can't understand why they are still so underrated, it's almost ridiculous. They never cease to amaze me with every show. Went to see them in Budapest, convinced they were supposed to play in a certain location but ended up playing in a totally different one, so a bit unsatisfied with the organiser... but in the end it didn't even matter that much, because I got to see the most amazing show on my birthday. A ton of love for my Editors!

Real shame PA problems affected the performance up until that this was great..appreciate it wasn't bands fault but some kind of apology rather than just trudging off with little communication would have been nice..gave up the ghost for the trek home after 20 mins waiting without any communicatuion..poor communication to a crowd gagging to see the band perform.. Probably won't bother again, more bands out there that appreciate their fans and not so precious.

Editors were fantastic!

Great band, great choice of songs.

They were awesome and played great music I really enjoyed the concert.

The only BAD - thing was the VENUE.

Marble Factory/ Motion Bristol- during the concert I felt like been in the OVEN! It was too hot and too humid!

There is no ventilation and I am not exadurating it was possibly 40’C where you could barely breathe.

piximini’s profile image

Unfortunately it all went wrong for editors at hammersmith, from song 1 the sound gremlins embarassed the band. Im guessing there were no problems at sound check. To have an unscheduled 20 min break in your gig is a complete nightmare. The crowd stuck it out and made the most of it. The Fans who love editor's will still love them but sadly will remember the gig for the sound problems.

Editors announce new album EBM and UK tour dates

7 June 2022, 13:07 | Updated: 7 June 2022, 13:11

Editors in 2022

Tom Smith and co will release their seventh studio album in September

Listen to this article

Editors are to release their seventh studio album later this year.

Titled EBM , the album will be issued on the Play It Again Sam label on 23rd September 2022. A new track, Karma Climb , was released today (6 June) to preview the LP.

editors tour 2022 france

Editors - Karma Climb (Official Video)

Frontman Tom Smith explains that the new track is "about hedonistic escapism, not only from the world generally, but also from what people think of you.”

It follows the recent release of another new track, Heart Attack, which features the new six-piece Editors, as the band recently added Benjamin John Power aka Blanck Mass to their line-up.

Power, who has been working with Editors since 2018's Violence , says of the new album: “There is a strong physicality to this record. EBM started its life with the intention of connecting with people and filling a very physical space.

"There is also however an emotional physicality running throughout; An urgency and a sense of panic. An unease. Even in its more tender moments, there is a yearning for connection.”

Very pleased to announce our new album, EBM, alongside new track ‘Karma Climb’ and new tour dates. EBM is released on 23rd September via Play It Again Sam. Editors announce 2024 UK tour

The dates come in celebration of their latest album ‘EBM’

Tom Smith of Editors performs live on stage

Editors have announced details of a new UK tour, set to kick off next spring. Find ticket details below.

  • READ MORE: Editors – ‘EBM’ review: brooding bangers show flashes of their very best

Announced today (December 11), the tour dates will see the band play a series of live shows across the country in celebration of their latest studio album ‘EBM’ .

Set to kick off in February next year, the tour dates will see the band play six shows across spring 2024. These launch with an opening night at the NX venue in Newcastle on February 26, and continues the following day with a gig at the O2 Academy in Leeds.

From there, the band will make a stop at the O2 Academy in Liverpool on February 28 for their last show of the month, before picking up again in March for three back-to-back shows. These include a gig at the Forum in Bath (March 1), Birmingham’s O2 Academy (2) and the O2 Guildhall in Southampton (3).

Tickets go on sale this Thursday (December 14) at 10am local time. Visit here to buy tickets and find a full list of tour dates in the poster below.

Editors UK tour poster 2024

As aforementioned, the new run of 2024 UK shows comes in celebration of Editor’s latest studio album ‘EBM’. Released in September last year, the album marked the band’s seventh LP and saw the members venture into new, electro-industrial territory.

Recommended

Upon its release, ‘EBM’ was given a three-star review by NME , who described it as containing “flashes of their very best”.

“Unlike their early records, on ‘EBM’, Editors straddle heart-tugging hits with their now more familiar, visceral rock numbers. Synth-stabbing ‘Strawberry Lemonade’, for instance, is as unnerving as it is foot stomping with its screeching bleeps and drum beats,” it read.

“Elsewhere, the bludgeoning ‘Picturesque’ comes on like a frenzied attack to the senses and ‘Strange Intimacy’ is a head-spinning closer that leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. ‘EBM’, then, goes some way to bringing the seasoned band back to what they do best, all the while pushing things forward.”

More recently, guitarist Justin Lockey – who sat out of the band’s summer 2022 dates due to “struggles with anxiety” – opened up to NME about what led to his decision and the ways he has worked to improve his lifestyle .

“A lot of people who aren’t in bands or in the music industry think that touring is this non-stop party of just waking up in different cities, after-shows and great gigs – but it’s not,” he said. “It can be a very isolating, lonely and strange existence. You’re not in the same routine as most of the rest of the planet. No one outside of music understands your routine.”

He later went on to say that his approach to touring had “completely changed”, thanks to actively “[changing] the balance and [putting] my interests up to a point where I can be cognitively focussed when I’m not doing music, but the other disciplines make you more excited about music”.

Anders Roed, PDG Brasseries Kronenbourg :
