Looking for the best things to do in Eindhoven? This local guide will show you all the best spots in the city!

I grew up in a little village in the south of the Netherlands, and Eindhoven was my main big city. 20 minutes by car (or 50 by bus) and you’d be right in the city centre. It naturally became the place where my friends and I would go shopping and watch the latest films at the cinema. It’s a city close to my heart but sadly, its potential is often overlooked by tourists who are visiting the Netherlands.

HELLO, there is more to this country than Amsterdam!

As Eindhoven is basically my hometown, I’ve taken it upon myself to become a bit of an advocate for the city – to show the world what this amazing city has to offer. That’s why I’m sharing my favourite things to do in Eindhoven in this local travel guide.

Eindhoven Itinerary Map

Now, let’s get into the best things to do in Eindhoven. Being crowned the design capital of the Netherlands and hometown of Philips, Eindhoven has quite a rich history. Nowadays, Eindhoven is filled with even more innovation, design, and creativity! Follow this guide below to plan your one day Eindhoven itinerary.

map of things to do in Eindhoven

Things to do in Eindhoven

Here are some of the best things to do in Eindhoven:

1. St. Catherine’s Church

This beautiful neo-gothic Catholic church is one of the prime buildings in Eindhoven. Right outside the main shopping street (The Demer), you can find St. Catherine’s Church. It is a little oasis for peace and quiet in the middle of a busy city centre. Take 15 – 30 minutes out of your day to visit this stunning piece of architecture and have a little wander inside.

St. Catherine's Church Eindhoven

2. Van Abbe Museum

I remember visiting the Van Abbe Museum for my art history classes back in high school. To my surprise (being a teenager forced to visit museums for a class she didn’t particularly enjoy), I had a wonderful time! The museum is filled with modern and contemporary art and is located in the centre of Eindhoven.

While researching some background information about the museum, I found out that it’s actually one of the first public museums for contemporary art to be established in Europe! Pretty cool, ey?

3. The Blob

One thing I love about Eindhoven is its cool and futuristic buildings. Blob is probably my favourite! On 18 September Square, you can find it stands out from the more traditional buildings. Blob was designed by Massimiliano Fuksas and inside the building, you will find some shops and a lunchroom.

Blob Eindhoven

4. Philips Museum

Eindhoven is the hometown of world-famous electrical company Philips, it’s the city’s main claim to fame. The impact Philips has had on the world is immense, and it’s awesome to see that it all started in a small city like Eindhoven.

To learn all about Philips and how it turned into the global company it is today, you can visit the Philips Museum. For more information about opening times and entree prices, check out their official website.

Philips Museum Eindhoven

5. DAF Museum

As well as being the hometown of Philips, Eindhoven has also been home to DAF (Europe’s largest truck manufacturer) since it opened back in 1928. Back when the company opened, they still made cars too! In this popular museum, you can learn all about the company’s history, its products, and rare prototype vehicles. For more information, entree prices and opening times, check out the official DAF museum website.

6. Strijp-S District

Formerly owned by Philips, Strijp-S used to be Eindhoven’s industrial park. It used to be known as “ the forbidden city” , as only Philips employees had access to the grounds. Since the start of the 2000s, this neighbourhood has been transformed into a growing hub for creative companies, independent shops, and Instagram-able eateries. A perfect place to explore the more creative (and maybe a little more hipster) side of Eindhoven.

Strijp S Eindhoven

Natlab is an independent cinema located in Strijp-S. The name (which translates into Physics Laboratory) was given to this cinema as the building was formerly used as Philip’s laboratory. Einstein once gave a lecture here! It now offers a meeting place for film fanatics to watch anything from famous blockbuster films to low-budget documentaries.

8. Urban Shopper

Fitting in perfectly with the creative side of the city, Strijp-S has a shopping centre filled with unique and independent shops. Urban Shopper is located in what was previously used as a Philips factory hall. It stayed true to the heritage with its industrial look.

You can find anything from fashion and design to books and furniture here! Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, it’s worth wandering around.

9. Gusj Market

If you’re a bit of an interior freak like yours truly, Gusj Market is a must-visit in Eindhoven. It is filled with unique furniture and smaller decorative pieces. Some pieces are on the expensive side , but it’s such a great place for home inspiration! It’s like walking through a real live Pinterest board.

10. Intelligentia Ice

Ice cream, patisserie, tea, coffee and probably the most Instagram friendly interior in the whole of Eindhoven. What is not to love? Oh, and they have a variety of vegan sorbet, coconut, and almond-based flavours and shakes.

11. Soul Kitchen In Strijp-S

As you might guess from the name, Soul Kitchen is a restaurant in Strijp-S, Eindhoven. But it’s more than just a restaurant. You can read a book from their exchange library, play music, meet new people, play some board games and of course, have a bite to eat.

One thing I love about Soul Kitchen is that it is used as an education centre for young adults who dream of working in hospitality. I’m all for giving people the means to follow their passion.

Soul Kitchen Strijp S

12. Coffeelab

I’m not gonna lie. I wish my apartment looked like the interior of Coffeelab . Coffee, plants, and furniture that might as well have been stolen straight out of my Pinterest “Home Inspiration” board. All cakes, sandwiches and other bites are homemade (and a lot of them are vegan!).

Coffeelab is located right outside the train station and it’s by far my favourite place for coffee in the whole of Eindhoven! If you’re travelling by train, definitely make sure to stop here for your daily caffeine kick.

13. Gourmet Market

Inspired by LA’s downtown gourmet market, Eindhoven opened its own food market in 2017. Bringing 21 individual eateries to the heart of the city centre. What I love about this place is that there is literally something for everybody.

From sushi to special Dutch bitterballen and other traditional Dutch dishes , the Gourmet Market has it all. Add that to the cosy atmosphere and you’ve got yourself a lovely, unique dinner experience.

Downtown Gourmet Market Eindhoven

14. De Burger

The best place in Eindhoven for… burgers! Guess you didn’t see that coming. Not only is the food to die for, but the interior is also on point. With a cosy atmosphere, lovely staff and some board games to play – De Burger deserves a place on this list! (Vegetarian options available)

15. XU Noodle Bar

This family-owned restaurant in Eindhoven is THE place for everything noodle. Inspired by generations-old family recipes, XU Noodle Bar is my favourite Asian-styled restaurant in the city. Their dishes are both tasty and affordable, a win-win! The ramen I had are definitely the tastiest ramen I’ve had since returning from Japan.

XU Noodles in Eindhoven

Mood is on the more expensive side, but worth every penny (or… you know… every euro cent. Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it…). If you’re looking for something a little bit different, Mood might be the perfect option for you. Their menu is a mixture of classical French dishes with a twist of Asian cuisine.

17. Vane Skybar

On top of the NH Hotel Eindhoven , you can find the best view across the city: Vane Skybar . Even though the restaurant and bar on the top of this 5* hotel are a little pricey, the view is stunning!

Eindhoven Sky Bar NH Hotel

You can get to Vane by entering the NH Hotel on Vestdijk street. Take the elevators to the 13th floor and ta-da, you’re in the restaurant! A pair of stairs will take you up to the roof, where the bar is located. We visited it the bar during the day, and luckily the sun made the view absolutely stunning, but I can only imagine how lovely it would look at night!

view of eindhoven

18. Stratumseind

Stratumseind is THE place to go clubbing in Eindhoven. I’m not much of a clubbing gal myself, as I much prefer a beer at a pub, but hey, each their own. If you want to have a taste of the Eindhoven nightlife, Stratumseind is the place to go. Tons of clubs, bars, and fast food places for when you’re done partying.

Craving a beer in the pub? You can find O’Shea’s Irish pub just around the corner of Stratumseind.

19. Piazza and the Bijenkorf

Close to BLOB and the 18 September Square, you find Piazza. It’s a small shopping centre with a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes. One shop that I’d highly recommend you check out is De Bijenkorf. This high-end department store sells anything from clothing, shoes, and cosmetics to books, toys, and home-ware.

Eindhoven piazza and bijenkorf

20. Nieuwe Emmasingel

Right outside of BLOB, you can walk through a little street called Nieuwe Emmasingel. You can find some of my favourite shops on this street, mainly because it’s a little bit different from the main shopping street. My two big recommendations on this street are Bookstore van Piere and Home Stocks .

21. The Demer

From Piazza, you can walk straight onto the Demer – Eindhoven’s main shopping street. Here, you can find mainstream shops like Mango, Pull & Bear and Apple. Some shops I’d recommend you check out if you’re not very familiar with Dutch stores are HEMA , Blokker, and Etos .

A local market is held every Tuesday on the Demer and the Market in Eindhoven – keep this in mind when planning your shopping trip! It can get quite busy, but it’s fun to see all the market stands.

22. Heuvel Shopping Centre

If you’re looking for more mainstream fashion shops, you can visit Heuvel. It’s located near the Market (which is basically next to the Demer) and you can find more than 80 shops inside.

23. Kleine and Grote Berg

The Kleine Berg, Grote Berg, and Bergstraat create a cozy little triangle of streets in Eindhoven. The three streets are mainly known for their exclusive boutiques. If you’re looking for a little bit more character compared to the usual H&M-Zara shops, this would be a great place to start!

Kleine Berg en Grote berg Eindhoven

24. GLOW Light Art Festival

Eindhoven is also known as the City of Light . With the city’s connection with Philips, Eindhoven became a source of light for the entire world. Eindhoven took that title a step further when it introduced GLOW in 2006.

The light art festival includes a five-kilometre walk through the city centre and has grown into one of the biggest light art festivals in Europe. In 2018, more than 750,000 people from across the globe visited Eindhoven for GLOW. GLOW is usually held in November. For more accurate dates and times, you can check out GLOW’s official website.

25. Dutch Design Week (DDW)

Eindhoven is also the home of the annual Dutch Design Week. As the city is a hub for design and innovation, companies like Philips and DAF have pushed for Eindhoven to become the design capital of the Netherlands. The Design Academy Eindhoven and the Eindhoven University of Technology also take part in organizing this exciting week promoting these creative industries.

During the Dutch Design Wee k, you can find exhibitions, workshops, and seminars across 110+ locations across the city. Starting out as the Day of Design back in 1998, this event has grown to attract more than 335,000 visitors!

Six weeks before Easter Sunday, Carnaval arrives in the South of the Netherlands. This celebration can only really be described as “dressing up for 4 days, getting drunk, party and enjoying the sight of Carnaval parades with handmade Carnaval floats through cities and towns”. Yes, it sounds crazy! But hey, it also sounds fun, right?

Carnaval is traditionally celebrated in the south of the Netherlands (yes, in Eindhoven!) and if you’re planning to visit the country for Carnaval I’d highly recommend going to Eindhoven. This is mainly because of the cheap airlines flying to Eindhoven Airport. Hotels are generally speaking a lot cheaper in Eindhoven compared to other big cities and you can easily take the train to other cities in the Netherlands .

Also read: How to spend one day in Maastricht , the oldest city in the Netherlands.

Is Eindhoven Worth Visiting?

Even though the city is often missed by tourists, Eindhoven bursts with energy and creativity! It may not be the most popular destination to visit in the Netherlands, but it’s lively, exciting and filled with tons of quirky places to explore. Plus, it’s a lot cheaper compared to cities like Amsterdam and Utrecht!

Being the design capital of the Netherlands, Eindhoven has some stunning pieces of architecture and is home to the annual Dutch Design Week . The city is definitely growing more popular and has started to attract more and more independent shops, cafes and unique new businesses. Rather than diving into very touristy cities like Amsterdam, Eindhoven gives you a glimpse of the real Dutch lifestyle.

Eindhoven is also home to the famous Dutch football team PSV . I’m personally not really into football, but having moved from Eindhoven to Manchester , I’m kinda forced to know a little bit about the sport. As I’m not incredibly knowledgeable (or passionate) about the topic, I’m not going into too much football detail – but make sure to visit the PSV museum and stadium when in Eindhoven if you’re a fan!

How To Get To Eindhoven?

By plane: Eindhoven Airport is the second largest airport in the Netherlands, and it seems to always be expanding! When visiting the Netherlands, I usually fly to Eindhoven. Even though it’s nowhere near as big as Amsterdam Airport, it still serves well over 1.6 million passengers yearly! Many budget airlines fly to Eindhoven, which is another win – I can usually get flights for as little as £15!

Right outside the airport you can find the bus stop. Bus 400 or 401 takes you to Eindhoven Central within 15 minutes. You can buy a ticket on the bus or inside the airport.

By train: Visiting Eindhoven by train is super easy, as the main station is located right inside the city centre. From Amsterdam, it takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes and a single ticket costs around €25. You can buy tickets online through Trainline or buy a ticket at the service desk at any train station in the Netherlands. Because Eindhoven isn’t a huge city, you can easily spend one day in Eindhoven and see most of the highlights.

Worried about train travel in the Netherlands? I’ve written a complete guide on how to buy tickets, how to use them and where to get discounts in this Dutch Train Travel Guide .

Where to Stay in Eindhoven?

Because Eindhoven is not a massive city, I’d highly recommend staying somewhere in the city centre. It’s local, close to everything and even if you’re planning on travelling outside the centre, public transport can take you there.

Student Hotel (4*)

My number one recommendation for places to stay in Eindhoven has to be the Student Hotel . It’s located right outside the train station, in the heart of Eindhoven. It’s very affordable and has that unique touch that I really appreciate. There are communal areas where you can meet people, play games or get on with work in a co-working environment. And it’s not just for students!

Student Hotel Eindhoven

Looking for a higher-end hotel to stay at? You might want to check out Brabant’s very first 5* hotel, NH Hotel Eindhoven . It’s located only 5-minutes by foot from the train station. As mentioned before in this travel guide, the NH Hotel also has a beautiful Sky Bar. From there, you can enjoy the sight of the entire city.

Conclusion – Things to do in Eindhoven

I hope that this guide has either persuaded you to visit this lovely city in the future or helped with your planning. Either way, if you have any questions regarding Eindhoven, let me know in the comments!

Nele (Nay-la) graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with an English and Creative Writing Degree and has lived in the UK for nearly 10 years. She has had an interest in Japan and its culture for as long as she can remember. Since her first trip in 2018 surpassed all expectations, she has continued to return to Japan to explore more of all it has got to offer. You can read her full story here .

Oh I really liked this post! I definitely have to check out the Strijp-S district next time I’m there. We usually only do the main shopping street and the shopping centre when we’re there, I didn’t know it had so much more to offer!

Thank you Chloe! Strijp-S is definitely a really cool place to visit next time you’re there 🙂 Don’t think a lot of people know about it yet haha!

Great post & it makes me miss that dynamic little city more! Don’t forget to check out the ever expanding Woensel West district.

Thank you Daniel! I’ve not been to Woensel a lot to be honest, might need to check it out next time I’m in Eindhoven 🙂

Beautiful pictures and amazing post. We’ve never been outside of the United States, however your post had us feeling like we were right there with you traveling through the streets, and enjoying the shopping!

Thank you so much Lisa! So glad you liked the post 🙂 Who knows, maybe you get to visit the Netherlands in the future! 🙂

Good post! The photos are amazing

Thank you! 🙂

I went Eindhoven for a Korfball tournament for Uni a few years ago but didn’t get a chance to explore the city the way I would’ve of I went today. Having said that I’m quite surprised as well by how multicultural and rich with activities the city is. This is why I love reading blogs! Thanks for sharing Nele 😉

Love this post! I am Dutch and I live in The Netherlands but I’ve never been to Eindhoven (I think). Maybe I should!

Bettie http://www.thewildflowerhippie.com

Thank you! You should definitely check it out sometime ^_^ Let me know what you thought 🙂

I love your guides and how much detail there is. I’m the stereotypical tourist who wants to go to Amsterdam, but Eindhoven is now on my list if I go to the Netherlands. X

Thank you so much for the kind words! ^_^ Amsterdam is definitely really fun too, but a little day-trip to Eindhoven can’t hurt 😉

I love the variety of places you’ve shared on this, the soul kitchen looks so lovely! I also really like the look of the Philips museum. I love that you shared how long it takes to get to from Amsterdam too.

Thank you for the comment! So glad you enjoyed the post – Soul Kitchen is definitely such a cool place to visit ^^

Eeeeh love love love this post! I live in Newcastle, UK, and we have a ferry that regularly goes do Amsterdam and back for £39 each. I’ve visited Amsterdam half a dozen times because of this but am intrigued to try other places in Holland. This city guide has sorted my next destination out for me already! Will be sending a link to the boyfriend so thanks so much for sharing!

Aawww thank you Bekki!! That’s so nice to hear, super glad you liked the post 🙂 Please let me know when you go, would love to hear what you thought about the city ^_^

Amazing city guide! Very extensive and very helpful. I am Dutch myself, but I live in Australia (Sydney) I have been to Eindhoven a couple of times but I have never seen half of what you are recommending. If I’m ever in the area again, I will make sure to check out your post again xx

Thank you Manon! Ohh another Dutch expat, love that! I’ve not been to Australia, but I’d love to in the future 🙂 Hope the guide helps for your next visit 🙂

Eindhoven is a cool little city to go to. I really enjoyed my time there. Unfortunately, when I was there quite a few of the places I wanted to go to were closed. I think because of the time of year, I’m not sure. I wish I saw this list before I went, the Urban Shopper shop looks really good! I’ll definitely have to plan a trip back there and go to these places!!

How strange that a lot of places were shut! Might have been the time of year, indeed 🙁 Hope you get to visit another time though 🙂

Some great recommendations. I am already in love with the places and can’t wait to explore them myself

Thank you! Please do visit Eindhoven if you’re ever in the Netherlands, it’s such a lovely place 🙂

I loved this post! I’m definitely adding this cool little city to my travel list.

Thank you Rachel! Hope you can visit it soon 😀

Great tips! I would love to go to the Netherlands! When I do, I’ll have your expert suggestions.

Thank you Susan, please let me know if you ever visit 😀 Would love to see pictures of your trip 🙂

Wat te doen in Eindhoven: 19x bezienswaardigheden Eindhoven

By Author Roxanne Weijer (she/her)

Posted on Last updated: 6 december 2022

Ontdek Strijp S

Handen street art Strijp S Eindhoven

Mall Urban Shopper

Mall Urban Shopper Strijp S Eindhoven

Trudo Vertical Forest (Trudo Toren) Strijp-S Eindhoven

Enversed Strijp S Eindhoven VR experience

Piet Hein Eek Eindhoven

Down Town Gourmet Market Eindhoven restaurant

Street art PSV Eindhoven

Silly Walks tunnel Eindhoven streetart

Ga dus zeker tussendoor even een worstenbroodje eten.

Houben worstenbroodje Eindhoven

Radio Royaal Strijp S Eindhoven

Dinner in Motion Eindhoven

BeanBrothers

Bean Brothers koffie Eindhoven

Sprout Coffee Roasters

Sprout coffee roasters koffie Eindhoven

Volta Galvani Woensel West Eindhoven

Bezoek Eindhoven tijdens Glow

Ontbijten in Eindhoven

The happiness café.

The Happiness Café

Lunchen in Eindhoven

Restaurant piet hein eek.

Fifth Nre Eindhoven jazz bar

Uiteten in Eindhoven

1910 eindhoven.

1910 Restaurant Eindhoven

Overnachten in Eindhoven

Hotels in Eindhoven

Hotel the match.

15 Best things to do in Eindhoven, Netherlands

Here’s a list of the 15 best things to do in Eindhoven ( Netherlands ), along with famous landmarks, museums, and other points of interest.

Eindhoven is one of the largest cities in the Netherlands with a population of circa 355 000 people in 2019. When it was founded in 1232 it was just a small town, but since then it has grown into one of the major Dutch cities with a big tech-business.

In this article, I’m sharing some of the best places to visit Eindhoven as well as attractions that shouldn’t be missed while visiting.

Stadsbrouwerij Eindhoven

Stadtsbrouwerij is one of the most popular brewpubs of the Netherlands and is known for producing fantastic craft beer. The beer produced here is called ”100 watts” and has won many awards.

The Stadtsbrouwerij offers a guided tour around the brewing facilities, explaining all the little details of what makes a great beer. There are also tasting events held here. Reservations for both the tour and the beer tastings need to be made in advance.

Sint-Catharinakerk

Sint Catharinakerk is one of the landmarks of the city and features two 73 m high towers that are a major part of the city’s skyline. The 19th-century church was designed by Pierre Cuypers and was built in a Neo-Gothic style of architecture.

Saint Catherine’s Church, as it is known in English, is also home to the largest organ of the Netherlands and is known for its beautiful rose windows. The building has been declared a national monument in the 1980s.

Sint-Catharinakerk

The DAF Museum

DAF Museum is dedicated to the manufacturer DAF which is based in Eindhoven and produces its trucks here since 1928. The museum showcases many historic DAF models including some of the cars produced by the company during the years after the Second World War and the trucks made here during the early years of the 1930s and 1940s.

There is also a so-called ”Trucknasion” to be found here, a section dedicated to teaching young visitors about mobility, sustainability, and road safety.

Watch a football game (PSV Eindhoven)

PSV Eindhoven is one of the best teams in the Netherlands and also a regular member of the Champions League, Europe’s top competition. The team has won 24 Eredivise-Titles, 9 KNVB-Cups, one Champions League Trophy, and the UEFA-Cup.

The Philipps Stadium, which serves as the home of the PSV, is a great place to witness high-level football and experience the local fan culture. Football fans should not miss it.

Van Abbemuseum

Van Abbemuseum is a great contemporary and modern art museum located on the banks of the Dommel River in central Eindhoven. It is dedicated to Henri Van Abbe, a great art collector of the early 20 th  century.

Today the site features a collection of around 2700 artworks, including the works of many famous painters such as Pablo Picasso. The Van Abbemuseum is located in one of the most interesting buildings in Eindhoven as it consists of an old wing and a new wing that couldn’t be further apart in their design.

While the old wing is a classical, red-brick structure the new wing is a breathtaking example of modern architecture making use of a futuristic design that just has to be seen when visiting the city.

Down Town Gourmet Market

Eindhoven’s Down Town Gourmet Market is the best destination in the city if you are a food-lover. It offers 21 individual eateries on one property and also offers two bars and a social hub.

The eateries vary from fast-food stalls to noble restaurants. The food on offer here is a mix of traditional Dutch food and international cuisine. No matter what food you like you will not be disappointed at the Down Town Gourmet Market.

preHistorisch Dorp

The theme park preHistorisch Dorp (in English: prehistoric village) is unlike any of the theme parks you have likely been to in the past. It offers visitors the unique experience of what life was like in the early days of human civilization.

You get to experience how farm work was done or what techniques people used to hunt animals. There are also many interesting prehistoric houses on display that give an idea of how families lived thousands of years ago.

The unique structure Evoluon is a landmark of Eindhoven and is one of the most impressive buildings in the Netherlands. It was erected in 1966 and today serves as a conference center.

Evoluon looks like a flying saucer and, due to its large concrete dome with a diameter of 76 m, it looks like an object that comes straight from an Alien movie.

Lichtjesroute

Lichtjesroute is an annual festival taking place in Eindhoven. It starts during September and features a parade celebrating the liberation of the city from the German Reich during the Second World War.

Lichtjesroute can be translated to the ”Route of Lights” and the festival very much lives up to its name as there are various ornaments made from light along the way. They usually depict images of the Second World War.

Stadswandelpark is located a few kilometers south of the city’s center and is one of the best spaces of greenery in Eindhoven. It offers great trails, many ponds, and plenty of benches and meadows that welcome everyone in need of some relaxation.

20 Intriguing Things To Do In Eindhoven: Modern Architecture, Design And Nightlife

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights. His full bio can be found here.

We know that Amsterdam gets all the attention, but there are lots of other awesome places in the Netherlands to explore. Case in point: Eindhoven.

Have you not heard of it? All the better – you’ll find a more innovative and less crowded place than the country’s (undoubtedly wonderful) capital.

So, where is Eindhoven, and what’s its deal? Well, it’s in the south of the Netherlands, about an hour and a half away from Amsterdam by train. The fifth-biggest city in the country, it’s traditionally well-known for its football stadium and its less-than-spectacular cityscape. However, times are a-changing, and there’s now a vibrant arts and culture scene coming to life there.

Known as ‘Lichtstad’ (City of Light) for its connection with electricity and industry, Eindhoven owes its growth and money in large part to Philips and car manufacturer DAF. Aside from the museums devoted to these two pillars of the cities, you’ll also find innovative art galleries, hip cafes, and some gorgeous parks.

While the city’s history dates back to the 12 th century, much of that history has disappeared under WW2 bombing and modernist architecture. Nestled here and there, you might stumble across relics of this past in the form of Eindhoven’s 140 national heritage sites ( Rijksmonumenten ). Try hiring a bike to explore these – as well as being quicker than walking; it’s a great way to engage with the Dutch two-wheeled lifestyle.

So much for day time activities, we hear you say, but what about the nightlife? While less hectic than Amsterdam’s (in)famous party scene, Eindhoven offers a wide range of laid-back and eclectic bars where you can kick back with a beer or a tasty cocktail. Most places are open until 2 am on weeknights, so there’s plenty of time to relax and chat with the locals.

Aside from experiencing a more ‘authentic’ side to Dutch living, what are the other interesting things to do in Eindhoven? We’ve got some of our favorite suggestions right here.

One of the most recognizable landmarks in Eindhoven, the imposing Sint-Catharinakerk, is a sumptuous neo-Gothic structure that shares an architect with Amsterdam’s Central Station and Rijksmuseum, Pierre Cuypers. It was built in 1867, and the most striking features are the two 73-meter-tall towers that soar above the city and are lit up to look particularly attractive at night.

Interestingly, these two towers are actually different in design, although the same height, which is a common feature of French Gothic churches. The southern is more elegant while the northern looks more like a defended fortress – although some think this is symbolism, the chances are higher that it was a financial reason!

Whatever the cause, it makes St. Catherine’s Church a fascinating place to visit – and the exhibition inside of relics found on an archaeological dig here adds to its interest.

From churches to worshipping at the altar of skateboarding, Area 51 Skate Park is one of those quintessential things to do in Eindhoven that gives you an idea of what day-to-day life is like there.

It’s an ex-Philips warehouse that’s been converted and has over 2800 square meters of space to skate in, complete with the street area, bowl, and mini ramp. It’s one of the biggest indoor skateparks in Europe and gives off an incredible energy as soon as you walk through the door.

Whether you’re an avid skateboarder or not, we’d still recommend trying your hand at it here. There’s a training area for the inexperienced and an excellent bar if you’d rather drink a beer while watching everyone else do cool tricks (*waves*).

Keeping Eindhoven on its toes is this new concept destination opening in what was originally Eindhoven’s very first gas factory. Yes, hip urban repurposing projects are all the rage now, and at Fifty Eindhoven , you will see an example completed to absolute perfection.

Today a hip restaurant, jazz lounge, performance venue, and almost speakeasy bar are hidden here, offering a chic industrial design that is worth a visit alone. Open from breakfast til into the night, the vibe might change here, but there is never a bad time to visit.

Grab a cocktail, chill with live jazz or just enjoy a relaxing lunch in their sun-drenched terrace (weather permitting, of course). This was one of our favorite secret spots in Eindhoven, and we are certain you will love it too!

Say the words’ art space’, and people will either light up or look alarmed. Whether you’re in the former or the latter camp, we’re confident that you’ll enjoy this trendy and varied destination that shines a spotlight on innovative art, design, pop culture, and media. The MU artspace’s proclaimed goal is to provide space for curiosity and discovery, and this it certainly does.

The space was formerly an industrial building (called ‘The White Lady’), so there are lots of spacious rooms with concrete walls and ceiling. Against this backdrop, the installations and pieces stand out remarkably. Exhibitions like 2019’s Computer Grrrls combine commentary technology, gender, and art to encourage conversation and reflection.

Come here for thought-provoking displays (and some amazing photos!).

Unsurprisingly for a city with such a strong industrial past, there’s no shortage of warehouses, urban spaces, and old factories to turn into trendy shops, workspaces, and cool places to eat. Strijp-S, the area around the Area 51 Skatepark, is buzzing with new ideas, new places to go, and general laidback vibes – making spending time here one of our favorite things to do in Eindhoven.

The area was actually once known as the ‘forbidden city’ because only Philips employees could go there (to work). Since those plants started to move, the area has been preserved and updated to become the hub of innovation and culture it is now. You can admire the surroundings while sipping on coffee at uber-cool Radio Royal, a vibrant open-plan café in an old Philips factory, or sampling the moreish ice cream at Intelligentia Taste Rooms (more on that later).

Strijp-S also plays host to events like Dutch Design Week and the STRP festival and has things like the amazing Ontdekfabriek (‘Discovery Factory’) for kids to have hands-on experiences learning about technology. And we haven’t even started talking about the shops! It’s a great atmosphere, and you could easily spend all your time in Eindhoven here.

Much like the downtown Palm Springs revitalization project, the Wharf Potomac River development in Washington DC , and the Avenidas Novas district in Lisbon, this is a phenomenal example of a successful revitalization of a historic area and one that is sure to both intrigue and delight.

This is one of the many offerings of the Strijp-S. Usually, when you think of VR (virtual reality), you think of it as a solitary pursuit, but Enversed shows you how people can experience VR gaming together. It’s the largest VR center in Europe and offers experiences for up to 75 people, whether you’re with friends, family, or team-building for work.

This isn’t your average VR, either. It’s amazingly realistic, stunningly well-designed, and so much fun, even if you’re not a gaming fan. You can shoot arrows in an archery simulation, or target drones in a shoot-out one. Alternatively, conquer your fear of heights on the paragliding option.

You can even play games against or with each other – these games include a flipping burger game, which we found pretty entertaining! Zombie survival was almost too realistic, but brilliant.

Another example of how forward-thinking the Netherlands is, Duurzama Kost City Farm is a futuristic space in an old Philips factory full of plants and pink LED lights.

Why, exactly?

Well, the cooperative City of Tomorrow (STIR) has developed Duurzame as part of an urban farming project to tackle issues like climate change, food, and pollution. So instead of using chemicals to grow food far from where it’s eaten and then wasting energy, transporting it, Duurzame aims to produce food sustainably near where it’s consumed.

It’s currently at the experimental stage, but they hope to move to be a commercial venture. The way these plants are grown, bathed in pink lights and floating in pools, is called ‘aquaponics’ and uses fish feces to provide nutrients to the water that the plants are grown in. It might sound bonkers, but it’s yielding results. Go and see it to find out more!

The famous Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek has taken this former Philips workshop and turned it into a haven of stylish design and sophisticated style. Close to the Strijp-S, you’ll find a showroom of designs, a shop, an art gallery, and a restaurant; it’s almost a mini-village of innovation. The colorful restaurant is a real highlight, full of the designer’s signature glossy recycled wood furniture and with a chandelier made of dozens of old lamps fused together.

It’s not only a feast for the eyes, as the food is pretty delicious, too. There are plenty of vegetarian options and the wine list is constantly tempting. Alternatively, just grab a coffee and soak up the atmosphere. You’ll have to resist buying everything in the boutique shop. We love the green ethos that runs through the space, with a lot of the pieces made from up-or-re-cycled materials.

If you want to see more of Eindhoven’s working design spaces, there is also Sectie-C, a tight organic community of more than 250 creative entrepreneurs artists, designers, musicians, communicators, and craftsmen, which open their doors to the public during Dutch Design Week.

It’s a unique experience to see and experience the workspaces of this Eindhoven creative up close, such as the innovative work of Enrichers looking at the relation between physicality and emotions. Tours are possible outside of Dutch Design Week if organized 4-6 weeks in advance.

Eindhoven has a far more compact layout than other sprawling cities we have visited, like  San Diego ,  Miami , or  Las Vegas … meaning you have the chance to investigate the city’s many diverse neighborhoods easily on a bike!

This is because, in the Netherlands, cycling is the transportation de jour with 36% of the people listing the bicycle as their most frequent mode of transport on a typical day as opposed to the car by 45% and public transport by 11%.  Eindhoven, in particular, is an exciting destination for a make-your-own -bicycle-tour trip with basically all interesting points of interest easily reachable via dedicated bike paths.

Eindhoven Tourist Information Office rents city bikes that have three gears if your hotel does not provide loaner bikes (Hotel the Match does) , and electric bikes and tandems can be booked in advance if that interests you. There is no need to be afraid, as while locals might take cycling seriously – they are nowhere near as aggressive as you will find in Amsterdam and simply shake their head at tourists doing the wrong thing…

If you’re looking for exhilarating rollercoasters, bewitching attractions and impressive shows, head out for a fun day at Efteling, the largest theme park in The Netherlands.

Enjoy precious moments with your loved ones, or simply go solo for the thrill of a lifetime on this day trip only one hour by train from Eindhoven. Grab your day admission ticket and take a step inside a fairytale world full of astonishing tales, enchanting dreams, and adventures at high speed.

Visit the captivating world of fairies in the Droomvlucht dark ride then huddle together during the electrifying spectacular Raveleijn park show featuring stunt horse riders and a fire-breathing monster. End your day on a high at Aquanura, the biggest water show in Europe.

There is also the opportunity to set sail on a raging sea aboard the cryptic ghost ship De Vliegende Hollander and to shoot straight down a deep mineshaft at 90 kilometers per hour in the dive coaster Baron 1898.

Often referred to as ‘ better than DisneyWorld,’ but we will let you be the judge of that…

Cocktails with a view are one of our favorite things, so we made a beeline for Vane Rooftop Bar in Eindhoven. You’ll find this on the 14 th floor of the NH Collection Hotel , where the atmospheric bar space leads onto a terrace with panoramic views of the city.

The innovative cocktails come from the creative mind of Tess Posthumus, the best female bartender in the world and are inspired by the four wind directions that gave the bar the name ‘Vane.’ Special mention goes to the ‘Post Pigeon’ cocktail inspired by the easterly wind and including spicy rum and pineapple.

If you fancy food after your drinks, Vane restaurant offers both spectacular evening views of the city and delicious food courtesy of Executive Chef Casimir Evens. The five-course menu has a variety of dishes with surprising flavor combinations that are paired with wine or cocktails.

Yes, you have to stay somewhere in Eindhoven, so why not opt for this delightfully eccentric hotel that aims to give you all the essentials for an enjoyable stay – and nothing more.

This means Hotel the Match is not only affordable but actively encourages you to get out and explore the city. The rooms are modern with unpredictable design twists, but all include fantastic beds because you won’t be able to drag yourself out of the Eindhoven nightlife before 4 am.

There are loaner bikes and smartphones, a seriously cool industrial-chic vibe, helpful staff, and a 24/7 market lobby – but the concept here is truly to immerse yourself in Eindhoven…and no to waste time with hotel breakfasts when there are so many fabulous coffee shops and cafes right on your doorstep.

Kazerne is an example of what Eindhoven does best – bringing together lots of different creatives in one venue. There’s an exhibition space showcasing world-class design and technology alongside a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant that’s open to the gallery. It sounds slightly surreal, but the experience – and the food – is incredible.

The dishes are vegetable-heavy and therefore change regularly to make the most of fresh, seasonal ingredients. Light pasta dishes, salads bursting with flavor, and savory meat options mean that basically everything on the menu will tempt you. However, you’d better leave room for dessert with options like basil panna cotta. High-quality wine to go with it and being surrounded by art make this an experience to remember.

If you are feeling extra luxurious, you could even consider a stay at the utterly unique Kazerne hotel to complete the experience.

One of the city’s treasures, this museum of contemporary art is easily one of the best things to do in Eindhoven.

Originally a private collection, the works were sold to the city council in the 1930s and have grown to include a diverse range of paintings, sculptures, installations, and other works of art. The building is a big part of the appeal, with the modern extension complementing the red-brick museum building with its traditional, symmetrical architecture.

The permanent exhibition at the Van Abbe Museum includes work by Picasso and Kandinsky; there are also always temporary exhibitions by a range of current artists bringing their own personal touch to the art scene of Eindhoven. The café is great, as well (not that we’re always thinking about food, honest!).

The TAC (Temporary Art Centre) provides a space and a platform for an incredible range of up-and-coming artists, aspiring theatre directors, and young people experimenting with performance and culture. It’s stuff like this that really makes you fall in love with Eindhoven; they appreciate established artists but also promote and support new ones.

There are over 70 artist studios here, as well as gallery space, events space, and a theatre. There are often concerts and stage performances here, as well as exhibitions, installations, and social events like BBQs and live music. As a gathering space for ideas and creativity, it’s hard to beat.

TAC is situated in the center of Eindhoven, next to the Philips soccer stadium and a 7-minute walk from the central station. They are open Thursday till Sunday but often closed over the summer – even artists need holidays, it seems. Check out their website for fun, off-beat events taking place – or just head to the garden bar, one of Eindhovens hidden finds, or Korean Food lab restaurant concept – all part of TAC.

The roots of this international corporation lie in Eindhoven, and the history of Eindhoven is intrinsically linked with Philips Electrics. No wonder that the Philips Museum is one of the most important sights in this City of Light. Here you get an insight into the inventions and products of Philips with interactive exhibits and kids’ workshops.

It’s not a huge museum, but it packs a lot in – and in a much more interesting way than you’d expect from a museum that’s essentially about a family business! It’s fascinating to see how a business empire can grow from humble beginnings. It’s also astonishing to see how far the world has come in terms of electricity from that first lightbulb.

Philips Museum Eindhoven

It’s hard not to see the UFO-shaped structure that was commissioned by Philips in the 1960s. The 77-meter concrete dome was originally used as a science museum but now primarily hosts conferences, events, and meetings. It’s the closest Eindhoven has to a symbolic landmark and is a fascinating building even if you’re not that into architecture (or UFOs!).

You can go and look around inside, although from indoors, it seems like your average conference center. It’s outside where you’ll really get the impact, whether you’re seeing it by day when you can walk around the lake at the back, or at night when it’s all lit up and looking especially extra-terrestrial.

A Dutch town would be incomplete without at least one open-air market. In Eindhoven, the biggest and most popular is the Saturday market on Kruisstraat, where you can find anything from bike parts to a wide array of farmers’ produce.

It’s fairly central, and lots of people go there, so it’s a place where you’re likely to get chatting to others even as you’re sampling the local cheeses.

Apart from the cheese and, of course, flowers, the market also offers olives, fruit and vegetables, sweets, baked goods, and hand-crafted products as well. Walking along the paths and peering at all the delights sold at the various stalls is a wonderful way to soak up Eindhoven’s life and pretend to be a local for a bit.

Since 2017 this hip food hall has brought a range of deliciousness to Eindhoven. There are 21 different eateries at the Down Town Gourmet Market to choose from – or 21 to try if you’re feeling brave! – with everything from Vietnamese noodles to tacos to sushi. Anyone who tells you that you can’t get good food in the Netherlands needs to be brought here because pretty much everything you try is impressive quality.

You grab a table in the middle, order some drinks there and then go exploring for food that you can bring back to your table (or scan the QR code and order directly to your table – but then you don’t get to ogle all the options). It’s perfect if everyone fancies something different to eat because here you can all have what you want – but still, sit at the same table!

We loved for all the same reasons we are obsessed with Elliot Stables in Auckland ,  the Lot 10 Hutong Food Court in KL , and Plant City in Providence — because of the sheer variety of food on offer, and that oh-so-cool-factor.  Don’t be surprised if you end up coming here for every meal.

We might have mentioned it earlier, but we think a trip to Intelligentia Taste Rooms is a thing to do in Eindhoven in its own right. Not only the best ice cream in Eindhoven but arguably in the continent, this cute spot models itself more as a tasting bar for ice cream connoisseurs than your average ice cream parlor.

It gets busy, but when you get to taste the ices, you’ll see why. An amazing range of flavours is on offer, from pandan cake to cinnamon to pistachio and truffle (yup, together!). It’s all about experimenting, and the team here seems to have the attitude of: ‘if it exists, it probably tastes good as ice cream!’

Definitely worth the wait (and the second wait when you go back for more!).

The largest town in the southern part of the Netherlands and the fifth-largest in the country, Eindhoven isn't a destination that tourists usually think of — which is a pity.

Located in a picturesque setting on the River Dommel, Eindhoven offers a number of great attractions and numerous rewarding things to do, from exploring its great museums to discovering its deep connections with famed artist Vincent Van Gogh.

Because of its connections with electronics giant Philips, Eindhoven has been given the nickname of "Lichtstad," or the City of Light. Over 130 years old, this now-massive company is one of the country's industrial powerhouses, a fact that's very much evident pretty much anywhere you go in the city.

To learn more about these and other great places to visit in the city, along with some of the best sightseeing opportunities in the Netherlands , be sure to review our list of the top attractions in Eindhoven.

Highlights of its more than 2,700 artworks include pieces by modern painters such as Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso.

It's also home to the world's largest collection of material by the influential Russian artist and designer, El Lissitzky. Other notable collections include numerous sculptures and art installations.

Video works and posters can also be seen, including a large Paris collection from Jacqueline de Jong, as well as examples from the USA, Germany, and Eastern Europe. A gift shop and café are located on-site.

The DAF Museum

Eindhoven has been home to DAF, one of Europe's largest truck manufacturers, and at one time, cars, since the company's founding in 1928.

Short for Van Doorne's Aanhangwagen Fabriek, the company was founded by brothers Hub and Wim Van Doorne in a small blacksmith's shop. From humble beginnings making simple engineering products, the company gradually progressed from trailers to cars and trucks.

One of the most popular museums in the southern Netherlands, the DAF Museum is a testament to the company's success. Highlights include a replica of the original workshops and offices, along with samples of its vehicles throughout the decades, including a number of prototypes.

Guided tours are available, and a shop and restaurant are located on the premises.

The PSV Museum

Calling Eindhoven football-obsessed is an understatement. But such claims seem reasonable when you're home to Philips Sport Vereniging (PSV), one of the most successful football (soccer) franchises in Europe. And with the club fast approaching its 110th anniversary in 2024, there's plenty of history on display at the PSV Museum (PSV Musée).

Highlights of a visit include the chance to see historic outfits and artifacts as well as photos and film footage of career highlights. English-language guided tours of the team's Philips Stadium (Philips Stadion Eindhoven) are also available and include packages that take in team practices, so you can see the players in action.

Address: Stadionplein 4, 5616 RX Eindhoven, Netherlands

St. Catherine's Church during the Glow Festival

Attractive St. Catherine's Church (St. Catharinakerk) was built in Neo-Gothic style in 1867. The original building, dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, was consecrated in the 13th century and was many times severely damaged by war and fire, even spending part of the 18th century as a stables and weapons store.

Now fully restored, the current structure incorporates a number of symbolic references to the work of Joseph Thijm, one of the country's best-known writers. Highlights of a visit include seeing its twin French Gothic towers, each 73 meters tall and known respectively as David and Maria.

Interior highlights include its stained-glass windows and its two organs, one of them with 5,723 pipes.

Address: Catharinaplein 1, 5611 DE Eindhoven, Netherlands

The Philips Museum

Housed near the original factory where Gerard Philips made his first incandescent light bulbs in the 1890s, the Philips Museum shows how this once-small enterprise has grown to become one of the world's largest electronics companies. A visit to this ultra-modern attraction gives visitors an excellent overview of the company's success, as well as the workings of its most memorable products.

One of the museum's most popular features is Mission Eureka, an interactive game involving digital quizzes and puzzles. There are also many other fun interactive exhibits that children enjoy. English-language guided tours of the museum and Philips-related city landmarks are available.

Art fans will also want to include the top-notch Phillips Collection on their list of must-visits in Eindhoven. Established in 1921, the museum houses a large contemporary art collection of some 3,000 works from around the world.

Guided tours are available. A café and shop are located on-site.

Address: Emmasingel 31, 5611 AZ Eindhoven, Netherlands

Van Gogh Village, Nuenen

Take a drive just eight kilometers northeast of Eindhoven and you'll come to the picture-perfect village of Nuenen.

Known as the Van Gogh Village Museum , it's famous the world over for its inclusion in the art of Vincent Van Gogh, who lived here from 1883 to 1885. His temporary home was in the pastor's house, which has been completely restored to its original style and is one of 21 historic buildings preserved on the site.

A highlight of a visit is the Vincentre . This excellent and recently expanded attraction is dedicated to the artist and his time in Nuenen, and is the focal point of many great walks following in Van Gogh's footsteps. These self-guided tours through what's referred to as The Outdoor Museum lead you to more than 20 different locations spread around the village that relate to the artist.

In addition to the latest audiovisual technology, audio commentary brings the life and times of one of Europe's most revered painters to life in a fascinating fashion.

Address: Berg 29, 5671 CA Nuenen, Netherlands

PreHistorisch Dorp (Prehistoric Village)

One of the most unusual attractions in Eindhoven, PreHistorisch Dorp , or the "Prehistoric Village," is a replica of an ancient community complete with dwellings and demonstrations of skills used by prehistoric people. This fun open-air museum recreates life from this and later eras, including Roman and early medieval times.

In North Brabant (Noord Brabant), the second largest of the Dutch provinces, agriculture was once the main livelihood before the textile, electrical, and metalworking industries blossomed after 1900. As a result, most of the settlements in the province were small hamlets and villages with farms growing crops such as rye, potatoes, oats, and fodder plants for dairy cattle.

At PreHistorisch Dorp, costumed interpreters bring the history of this province to life, going about everyday tasks and interacting with visitors in a variety of fun interactive programs and hands-on workshops. These might include learning to make a fire as prehistoric people did, baking bread on a stick, or learning how to make a Roman fibula, a form of garment pin popular 2000 years ago.

Prehistoric farming methods, hand weaving and spinning, metalwork, and other skills are also demonstrated and discussed here. Although very engaging for children, this is an experience for all ages. All signage is in English, as well as Dutch, and guided tours are available.

Address: Boutenslaan 161B, 5644 TV Eindhoven, Netherlands

GLOW and other Festivals

In mid-November each year, Eindhoven hosts an international light art festival known as " GLOW ." This popular winter event features light artists from all over the world who transform the city into a wonderland of spectacular displays of colored lights.

More than 30 illuminations transform streets and buildings each night. Perhaps the most breathtaking of all these is the illumination of the façade of Saint Catherine's Church , picking out its architectural details in different colors.

Another important annual festival is Lichtjesroute , held each autumn to mark the city's liberation from German occupation in 1944.

Eindhoven is home to a number of first-rate concert venues and theaters, including the spaceship-like Evoluon , former home of the Philips Science Center, and now a conference center and music venue known for hosting major European groups.

Genneper Watermill

Eindhoven is blessed with a number of excellent green spaces providing locals and visitors with ample room to relax. One of the most popular is Genneper Parken. This nearly 500-acre green space is set in a pretty location on the Tongelreep and Dommel rivers in a valley conservation area.

You'll have fun exploring its well-marked, meandering trails to discover such landmarks as the Genneper Watermill and the neighboring Environmental Education Center , with exhibits relating to the area's flora and fauna.

Also noteworthy is City Park (Stadswandelpark), a popular place for a stroll thanks to its 30 unique sculptures. You'll also wander past monuments such as the Radio Monument, celebrating the first radio communications with the Dutch East Indies in 1927.

Address: Antoon Coolenlaan 1, Eindhoven, Netherlands

Lemurs at the Dierenrijk Zoo

If you're looking for things to do with the family, Dierenrijk Zoo is a great place to visit. Here, the emphasis is on up-close encounters and interactions with the resident wildlife. Children can get close to such appealing animals as the red panda, and can feed many of them.

Elephants and seals perform, and glass walls allow close encounters even with large animals like bears and tigers. Visitors can walk through the bird enclosure. There are playgrounds and exhibits indoors and outside, so this is an all-weather attraction.

Address: Baroniehei 1, 5731 RG Mierlo, Netherlands

The Inkijkmuseum is not only one of Eindhoven's most interesting museums, it's also certainly the city's smallest. Literally translated as a "look-in" museum, it's housed in what was the washhouse of a former linen factory. The ground floor of this fascinating little museum is viewed by peeking through its windows at the often-changing artworks inside.

Another art-related home to visit is the Ton Smits Huis , a museum in the former studio of one of the Netherlands' most famous cartoonists.

If you're visiting Eindhoven for the first time, the best place to stay is in the city center. Most of the top attractions in Eindhoven cluster in this compact area within a short stroll or drive from each other, including the Van Abbemuseum, St. Catherine's Church, and the Eindhoven Museum. Here are some highly-rated hotels in convenient locations you may want to consider:

Luxury Hotels:

  • A short stroll from the Van Abbemuseum, the artsy Pullman Eindhoven Cocagne resides in a contemporary glass and steel building. The luxury De Heuvel mall is just across the street.
  • Also sleek and contemporary in style, the Park Plaza Eindhoven is set in a quiet, central location steps away from the Van Abbemuseum. It has a heated indoor swimming pool, two Finnish saunas, and a small gym.
  • You can walk across the street to Eindhoven Central Station from the Holiday Inn Eindhoven . This IHG group hotel offers simply-styled modern rooms and a swimming pool. The hotel is only a short walk to the city center and 500 meters from PSV Stadium.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • Right in the center of the action and only an eight-minute walk from Eindhoven Central Station, the trendy Inntel Hotels Art Eindhoven occupies a 1909 factory building with plenty of glass and brooding black accents. Breakfast is included.
  • Even closer to the train station, near restaurants and shops, the Crown Hotel Eindhoven Centre offers clean, compact rooms a five-minute walk from the Philips Museum and PSV stadium.
  • On the market square in the town center, Queen Hotel Cafe Restaurant is also only a five-minute walk from the Philips Museum.

Budget Hotels:

  • The pet-friendly Sandton Hotel Eindhoven City Centre , with clean, crisp rooms, is at the top end of the budget category, while the Hotel Benno , also in the heart of the city, is cheap and cheerful.

Things to do in Eindhoven

Who Says There Aren’t Interesting Things to Do in Eindhoven?!

It’s come to our attention that people wonder if Eindhoven is a good place to visit. So, we went to check it out!

To out surprise, this smaller Dutch city (actually the 5th largest) is full of free and unusual things to do! There are a ton of museums in Eindhoven given that the city has a rich history that dates back centuries.

If you didn’t know, Eindhoven was badly destroyed during World War II. When it was rebuilt, the city adopted an industrial design and has since become a hub for design and innovation.

As a result, the city uses and reuses its modern space very uniquely.

There are lots of great cafes and food places – and you’ll also find quite the area to go out at night! So, if you are wondering if Eindhoven has a good nightlife – you’ll have to find out for yourself!

We explored during the day but we got to check out many things to do in Eindhoven – so here we go.

Table of Contents

Things To Do In Eindhoven, The Netherlands

To help you plan your trip to Eindhoven, here are a bunch of the top attractions, sights, eats, and drinks.

We had a great time wandering around the city and definitely need a second full day to take in everything on this list.

Wander Stratumseind at Night

man walking down bars street stratumseind things to do in eindhoven

Eindhoven, if you didn’t know, has a massively long street of just bars, pubs, and clubs. It’s called Stratumseind – and it’s actually the longest “nightlife” street in the whole of the Netherlands!

Take that, Amsterdam. We wandered through Eindhoven in the daytime so we obviously didn’t get to experience Eindhoven nightlife but we really want to head back so that we can give it a go at least once.

Visit the DAF Museum

DAF – or once officially “ Van Doorne’s Aanhangwagenfabriek N.V.”  is the famous Dutch truck and manufacturing company founded in 1928.

You’ll see DAF trucks on the road if you drive around Europe on the highways! Their headquarters are in Eindhoven, and you can visit them in the DAF Museum.

Here, you’ll learn about the history of the company, the brand, and get to check out truck models, cars, and prototypes that never hit the road.

Pretty cool if you are into understanding how a fast-growing truck company has influenced the industry for decades.

You can learn about admission prices and opening hours if you  visit the DAF Museum website .

Admire St. Catherine’s Church

red brick cathedral front with blue sky things to do in eindhoven

Dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, this beautiful cathedral was built in 1867. The Neo-Gothic design has changed with renovations over the years (mainly due to damage from World War II bombing).

These days, the church is known for its beautiful stained glass windows which were put in during restorations. It has been a national monument since 1972 and has one of the largest Dutch pipe organs in the country.

The church has merged with local music performance groups. As such, there are weekly concerts which you can attend. Check out the website for more information and the performance schedule .

Photograph the Evoluon

Eindhoven has a spaceship – or more specifically a “flying saucer” that you should definitely see. Let’s be serious – this is just a very cool building.

The futuristically designed building was completed in 1966 by Philips – and you’ll learn more about the company as we go.

These days, it’s a conference centre that gets used quite frequently. It was also the location of a former science museum.

In any case, the building has come to represent the technology and innovation happening in the city – so go and check it out. It’s just a quick walk from the Strijp-S Area (which we mention below).

Address: Noord Brabantlaan 1A, 5652 LA Eindhoven

Visit the Van Abbemuseum

museum building with blue sky in background things o do in eindhoven

Opened in 1936, this unusually designed building is one of the best museums of modern and contemporary art in Europe.

There are over 2700 pieces of art – ranging from paintings to sculptures some of which were created famous artists such as Picasso, Mondrian, and Kandinsky.

The Van Abbe is very easy to get to. We had a wander around the entire building but didn’t go in due to time constraints.

It’s just south of the train station about a 10-minute walk through shops/bars and located beside the Dommel Rover in the Stratumseind District.

If you want to learn about opening hours and admission prices, you can visit the Van Abbemuseum website .

Address: Bilderdijklaan 10, 5611 NH Eindhoven

Relax in Stadswandelpark or Genneper Park

small river with bridge and green trees things to do in eindhoven

Stadswandelpark has tons of green space and also has a statue garden, well-trimmed lawns, and walking trails.

There is even an Observatorium, a few nice ponds, and a pavilion with a restaurant! This public park is also close to Genneper Park which we’ll mention further down.

Address: 5615 EE Eindhoven

Genneper Park is over 200 acres of green space. This makes it a great place for walks with lots of ponds, bridges and old architecture – you’ll be sure to get some great photos here.

Close by, other areas of the park include a sports complex, swimming pool, skating track, and golf and country club so there is definitely a sports side to the park space as well!

Address: Bayeuxlaan, 5644 RX Eindhoven

Explore the Strijp-S Area

This post-industrial area of old factories and buildings has been converted into shops, restaurants, workspaces, innovation labs, and a network of apartment buildings.

As a result, the area is a thriving centre outside the city centre of Eindhoven. We originally headed to the area for the famous market hall (Veem Market – see right below).

But it is here that we stumbled upon most of the venues for Dutch Design Week and had an absolute blast exploring the vintage shops and other things the area has to offer!

Try Food At The Veem Market

yellow neon sign on brick wall things to do in eindhoven

One of the reasons we headed over to the Strijp-S Area in the first place was to check out the market. As it turns out, Veem Market (or Vershalveem) did not disappoint.

We have a thing for food markets given that Lisa lived in Copenhagen and we made a point of exploring the Danish food market culture there as well!

When you walk into Veem, the atmosphere is awesome. It’s just a large local food market with vendors selling everything from bread, cheeses, meats to vegetables, fruit and coffee, wine and beer – you name it.

They also have a few places that do food right there – from “American style” hamburgers to Indonesian and Japanese cuisine.

In the end, we had a great wander out to the market and with Dutch Design Week happening, we really got to explore the area to its full potential!

Address: Torenallee 86-02, 5617 BD Eindhoven

Sample at the Bottle Distillery

Do you have a taste for gin, brandy, vodka, and more? Then the Bottle Distillery is for you!

Located in the Schellensfabriek (old textile factory) in the city centre, it’s easy to walk to from the train station.

Founded and run by a couple that is passionate about creating top-quality alcohols and the experience that goes into crafting it, they run a gin-making workshop, guided tours, and tastings.

There is also a shop to be able to purchase the ones you enjoyed the most!

Since they have some structured tour times and other times when you can just pop in and they will accommodate, we’d suggest booking ahead/researching before your visit on the Bottle Distillery website .

Visit The Philips Museum

glass exterior of museum entrance things to do in eindhoven

Eindhoven is the city that gave birth to the world-famous innovative electrical company, Philips! Founded back in 1891 making bulbs and lamps, the brand has shifted over the years to become a leader in technology.

In the museum, the permanent exhibition walks you through the company’s interesting past. There are many stories and actual products on display, as well as exhibitions that come and go to add to the museum experience.

We thought that it was pretty cool to think that a global brand like Philips was started in Eindhoven. Just goes to show the significant impact the city has had on shaping our world.

For the prices and opening hours, check out the official museum website .

Address: Emmasingel 31, 5611 AZ Eindhoven

Learn About The Past At PreHistorisch Dorp

The PreHistorisch Dorp is a large “theme park” open-air museum that lets visitors learn about 6 significant historical eras in the region – from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages!

The interactive museum is located near Genneper Park and featured live actors that you can chat with to learn all about.

The museum places an emphasis on the Iron Age and the Middle Age since those periods are particularly fascinating for the history  Dutch region.

So, if you want to know what life was like back then – check out the prices and opening hours for  PreHistorisch Dorp .

Address: Boutenslaan 161B, 5644 TV Eindhoven

PSV Stadium + Museum

grey soccer stadium with blue sky things to do in eindhoven

If you are a football fan (soccer for North Americans), then checking out Philips Stadium and the Museum might be for you.

The stadium is home to the Philips Sport Vereniging (or PSV Eindhoven football club, for short). Fun Fact: the stadium is actually the third largest in the country!

The club itself was founded on the very same grounds where the stadium stands today back in 1913. So watching a PSV match is a great idea if you are in town.

Because of this rich history to the club, you can also visit the PSV Museum – which has many jerseys, trophies, and a free audio guide – and/or do a stadium tour.

If you want to watch a game or experience the stadium, you can learn all about the schedules and information here .

Things to Consider When Visiting Eindhoven

If you are heading to the Netherlands and considering a visit to Eindhoven, here are a few tips/pointers to help you plan your trip.

This is especially helpful for those who are unfamiliar with the country and the city of Eindhoven.

How to Get to Eindhoven

bikes in racks on green lawn with train station behind things to do in eindhoven

Eindhoven is located in the geographic bottom/middle of the Netherlands.

For a traveller measuring distances, Eindhoven is about a 1.5-hour drive south of Amsterdam, the same distance southeast of Rotterdam, an hour north of Maastricht, and about 1.5 hours across the border from Brussels in Belgium.

Eric explored this region in 2015 on a classic Europe Trip so he knows how close these places really are.

Tip:  Due to its geographic location, Eindhoven is a great city to use as a base for day trips to other places.

This is a good idea if you want to explore cities and other countries in the area while keeping your accommodation costs lower by staying in a smaller city. If you are exploring by car, compare prices for the duration of your trip  with this handy tool .

We took the train into Eindhoven from Maastricht. In general, this area of Western Europe is very well connected by train as well as buses like Flixbus .

If you are travelling around the Netherlands, 9292 is the transportation website for navigating and it is really good. There is even an app version which we mention in our post on great travel apps !

Getting Around in Eindhoven

As with most Dutch cities/towns, the cycling infrastructure is absolutely impeccable. That means that if you rent a bike you would have a super easy time navigating the city safely and efficiently.

Besides biking around Eindhoven, the city is very walkable and not overly large so you could definitely count on your two feet to get you around.

If walking isn’t really your style, there is also an extensive bus system around Eindhoven – with a large bus station right at the central train station. The official website is in Dutch, so here is the 9292 page for the Eindhoven Bus Station .

Where to Stay in Eindhoven

Even though the city is smaller in size, there are still quite a few places to stay if you want to explore the city for a few days.

Many of the hotels are situated in the city centre so you will have no problem booking something within walking distances to many attractions, museums, etc. You can get started looking for hotel deals in Eindhoven on Booking.com here .

If you are passing through on a backpacking trip (or just want to keep things cheap) there are very few hostels in Eindhoven. That said they are high-rated on Hostelworld. Check out hostels in Eindhoven here .

And there you have it – 12 of the top things to do in Eindhoven. We had a nice day walking around the city exploring everything that it has to offer.

There is something for everyone – from history to drinking, to shopping, sports, food, and museums. We definitely need another day to cross everything off the list but since we live so close we can make the trip easily!

What do you think? Have you explored Eindhoven? Thinking about checking it out? Let us know if you do!

The Best Things to See and Do in Eindhoven, The Netherlands

Eindhoven, in the Netherlands, is at the cutting edge of technology

While it was founded in the 13th century, Eindhoven ’s real history is intricately entwined with the rise of electronics giant Philips – so much so that it is informally known as the City of Light, in reference to the bulbs that the company once produced here in vast quantities. The Netherlands ’ fifth-largest settlement may lack the old-world charm of other Dutch cities, but modern Eindhoven is a hub of innovation, technology and cutting-edge design, and many of its fascinating sights reflect this.

Eindhoven’s most striking building, the Evoluon, is in the shape of a flying saucer; formerly a technology museum, it’s now an events venue. The central Vesteda Toren stands out on the skyline as it resembles New York’s Flatiron Building, while De Admirant, at 105m (344ft), is the city’s tallest building. Nearby is the bizarrely amorphous structure known as De Blob, while across the street is the distinctive former Philips lightbulb factory, the White Lady. At one end, the top floors of its heptagonal Light Tower once shone like a permanent beacon, as this is where the company tested its light bulbs for endurance.

Philips may grab the headlines as the company that built Eindhoven, but the city is also home to another global company, DAF Trucks. The DAF Museum explores its history with a re-creation of the original DAF garage. There are hundreds of cars, trucks and other utility vehicles on display, including some heavy-duty survivors from the gruelling Paris-Dakar Rally. There are driving simulators and other themed hands-on games for the kids, plus you can climb into a trucker’s cabin or simply take a look at some whacky prototypes that never quite made it into production.

8. Relax in parks and gardens

Things to see and do_parks_by Nick Bookelaar

Thanks to its relatively recent development, Eindhoven has benefitted from sympathetic town planning and is one of the greenest cities in the Netherlands. It’s possible to follow the banks of the River Dommel from one side of the centre to the other along a leafy corridor virtually the whole way. Perfect for an evening stroll, Stadswandelpark (City Walking Park) is home to numerous modern sculptures that turn it into an outdoor art gallery. Also worth exploring is the expansive parkland surrounding the Karpendonkse Plas, a lake that’s home to a large population of geese as well as one of the city’s finest restaurants .

10. Take the PSV Stadium Tour

Eindhoven is proud of its sporting heritage, and nothing has given the city more reason to cheer than its men’s football team, PSV, which has won the Dutch league more than 20 times. A tour of PSV’s home ground, Philips Stadium, is a must for any fan. The visit takes in behind-the-scenes areas, such as the changing rooms and the directors’ box, and gives a glimpse into the pitch-side dugouts. The adjoining museum is packed with memorabilia from the club’s history, including a replica of the European Cup, a trophy the club won in 1988.

11. Take in the sights of Glow

GLOW Eindhoven - Mindsets (DO NOT USE)

The biggest annual event in Eindhoven is Glow , a week-long spectacular celebration of light art that highlights the city’s design innovation and attracts more than 750,000 visitors. Each November the organisers create a different walking route around the city centre, peppered with around 30 art installations. They range from small and quirky fun pieces to the grand-scale illumination of the exterior of entire buildings, such as the Van Abbemuseum and the façade of the central St Catherine’s Church.

12. Explore Strijp-S

Shopping Mall, Building, Art Gallery, Cinema

Northwest of central Eindhoven, the Strijp-S district was once the manufacturing hub of global electronics giant Philips. It was known as the Forbidden City, as the site was off limits to everyone except company employees. Today, it has taken on a new lease of life that’s accessible to all. Factories have transformed into a wealth of designer stores, art ateliers, creative spaces and fun activities ranging from a virtual reality experience to an arthouse cinema. It’s even home to one of Europe’s largest indoor skateparks. You’ll also find a growing selection of bars and restaurants, including a food hall and a brewpub.

One Day in Eindhoven Itinerary – Top Things to do in Eindhoven, Netherlands

The Netherlands is a well-known country among travellers for its art, culture, exciting museums, and iconic locations. Eindhoven, the country’s capital of industrial design, is the fifth largest city with many engaging locations that draw tourists’ attention. And while it may not be the most famous Dutch city, there is no doubt that there are many interesting locations you can squeeze into your Eindhoven itinerary. And you only need one day to see them!

One day in Eindhoven Itinerary

What’s the best time to visit Eindhoven?

The weather of this city is highly affected by the currents of the Atlantic and the North Sea, with freezing winters and warm or pleasant summers. The wind blows very cold from December to March, so if you don’t like the cold, this may not be a great time to visit, but there’s no denying that the Christmas mood is perfect.

Eindhoven Old Town

It gets warmer in April, and the temperatures keep climbing till July, which is the warmest month. August, on the other hand, is the busiest. Therefore, summer is definitely the best time to visit Eindhoven.

It should also be mentioned that Eindhoven abounds with interesting events. GLOW , for example, is a light festival that takes place in November, Park Hilaria is a 10-day August fair with loads of awesome rides, and there’s almost always an interesting music festival somewhere in the city.

A few facts about Eindhoven

Eindhoven today has just under 240,000 people, and it was first mentioned in 1232 when the small town was granted city rights.

The city is also known as the City of Lights. In 1891, the Philips family started producing light bulbs, and soon the whole city was decorated with lights. The company later grew to world fame and today has more than 80,000 employees. Naturally, the city also has a Philips museum.

Eindhoven Philips Building

In addition, Eindhoven is the greenest city among the major cities in the country. It also has fantastic parks for everyone to chill, relax and do some sports activities.

Interestingly, not having lights and bells on bikes or cycles is illegal, and helmets are optional. Thus, if the traveller desires to make the trip to the city on a bike, it is vital to follow these rules.

Eindhoven

One day in Eindhoven Itinerary:

Welcome to Eindhoven, a beautiful modern city in the south of the Netherlands. There certainly is a lot to see, experience and enjoy here, but you can still make it even if you only have just one day. All you need is a reliable itinerary. Here it is – these are the best things to see and do during your one day in Eindhoven.

Start with a cup of DENF coffee

One cannot think of a better way to start the day than this. DENF Coffee is right there in the city centre, so it’s a great place from which to start your tour. This place is one of the best cafes in the city and serves various kinds of coffee – sit down, relax, do some people-watching, and get ready for an exciting day ahead.

Follow that up with a visit to the DAF Museum

After a nice cup of coffee, visit Eindhoven’s DAF Museum , which is approximately five minutes from the cafe. DAF is one of the largest manufacturers in Europe, creating many trucks and cars, and this place has a variety of collections of its products, spanning across decades.

DAF Musem, Eindhoven

DAF is actually short for Van Doorne’s Aanhangwagen Febriek – the company was founded in 1928 and started by two brothers, Hub and Wim Van Doorne, in a blacksmith’s store. Every showcased item is perfectly maintained, so this is definitely something for car enthusiasts.

Make an obligatory stop at the Philips Museum

Visiting Eindhoven and not visiting the Philips Museum is like going to Amsterdam and not doing a water canal trip. Philips is one of the main reasons for the popularity of Eindhoven because it was here that the Philips family started manufacturing lightbulbs in their early days.

Philips Museum, Eindhoven

This museum takes visitors through the history of this company which is inextricably linked with the history of the city. By visiting this place, you will get a greater insight into Philips and learn how the company helped Eindhoven become the financial powerhouse it is today.

Step into Van Abbemuseum

Van Abbemuseum is about one kilometre away from the Philips Museum. Hence, hiring a taxi is an ideal option if you want to get quickly and comfortably here and even to other locations in the city. Besides, it’s much faster than public transport.

Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven

Now, Van Abbemuseum is a museum of contemporary art, with more than 2500 different pieces, including some works of Pablo Picasso, and art collections of paintings, sketches, sculptures, video works, and many others. Even the building itself (the modern wing) is a piece of art and worth examining thoroughly on its own. The gallery is considered to be one of the most exciting ones in the whole country, so it very much deserves a place on your Eindhoven itinerary.

Find a place for lunch

At this point, it will likely be past noon. Thus, it is pretty effortless to guess that you will be quite hungry. Bar and restaurant Vestdijk 47 is very close to Van Abbemuseum, and it is a contemporary, relaxed restaurant that serves excellent food. So, a great choice for lunch.

Giornale is another fantastic choice, especially if you like Italian food, and Doyy and 1910 Restaurant also come very highly recommended. That, of course, is not all when it comes to restaurants in Eindhoven, so a bit of exploring can go a long way. Do invest some time into it if you have it, you won’t regret it.

See St. Catherine’s Church

Next on our itinerary is St . Catherine’s Church , and you don’t have to go far to see it. Its fantastic design includes several symbolic references to the work of Joseph Thijm , a great writer. This neo-Gothic beauty has two impressive exterior towers named David and Mary, but you also don’t want to miss out on marvellous rose windows. At night, the church becomes more splendid to behold as it is decorated with different lights.

St. Catherine’s Church, Eindhoven

Visit the Philips Stadium

It should come as no surprise that Philips has its own stadium in the city, too. Home to the Dutch powerhouse PSV, Philips Stadium can hold up to 36,500 spectators and has plenty of commercial places, so if you’re a football fan, this is something you shouldn’t miss.

Philips Stadium, Eindhoven

Interestingly, the stadium was built way back in 1910, and its purpose was to provide Philips employees with a place for physical activities. Naturally, it has gone through several renovations since then, but its history is inextricably linked with PSV, who moved in just three years after the stadium was built.

Spend your evening in Strijp-S District

What was once a Philips industrial complex is today one of the most beautiful locations in the city. Strijp-S has plenty of great restaurants, shops and events to offer, so it’s a wonderful place for an evening stroll, dinner and maybe some souvenir shopping. Oh, and you will see many interesting art pieces here, too.

Strijp-S District at night

Ketelhuis Strijp – S is a nice place to sit down if you’re looking for a bite or even just evening drinks, and the same can be said for Loetje Eindhoven . Once again, you will see plenty of dining options here, so you can be sure you will have a wonderful evening in Eindhoven.

There are also many excellent cafes, restaurants and bars where you can just chill and enjoy the fact that you’re here.

Amsterdam and Eindhoven are also just an hour and a half apart, so if you haven’t yet visited the most famous city in the country, this is your chance. Amsterdam’s canals are among the city’s best sights, and travellers can explore them through a private cruise. Your one day in Amsterdam can also include visiting some fantastic museums, you will see flowers all around you, and there’s always the possibility of a visit to the famous Red Light District.

Breda is a wonderful city full of historic sights, chief of which is the Breda Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are many other examples of centuries-old architecture, and this exceptionally charming city also offers plenty of nice places for a stroll. Relax, explore and go sightseeing on this day trip, plus you can maybe also include Rotterdam in the mix since it’s less than half an hour away.

Extra tips for visiting Eindhoven

Organise everything in advance – When travelling to Eindhoven, make sure to arrange everything in advance. Make the reservations in your hotel, schedule the transportation service, and also plan the whole day of your trip. Reservations are the best option since they guarantee the booking of everything as sometimes things are unavailable when it is needed.

Book the refundable stays – Make sure that the place you book for your stay is refundable. You don’t want to lose all of your money if something unexpected comes up and you’re unable to make good of your reservation.

Buy the ov-chipkaart – If you plan on using public transport a lot, then buying the OV-chipkaart is your best choice. You can just scan the card at the end of the trip to make the payment. It is a simple process and makes travelling quite effortless.

Careful with the coffee – It is illegal to enter any coffee shop in the Netherlands unless the person is 18 years plus. Many places in the city only allow entry if the person is an adult. Hence, it would be a great idea to carry the ID card along in the bag while travelling.

Make sure you have everything you need

What to pack for your next trip.

Make your next trip as simple and as enjoyable as possible by packing smart. It’s amazing how much stress top travel items can save you, so choose carefully. Only if you want to waste time and money, otherwise you walk 11 minutes through the city centre (Lovely sightseeing), or cycle 3 minutes. In Eindhoven you dont need taxi’s to get around. Public transportation is quite good, but the best way to get around is by bike or on foot.

Taxis are not required in Eindhoven. While public transportation is adequate, biking or walking is the easiest way to get around.

Crazy 88 Eindhoven

“‘speel de meest crazy opdrachten tijdens ons crazy 88 spel.. eindhoven de gekste”.

eindhoven crazy tourist
