SAN DIEGO (October 6, 2023) — Adventurer, television host, and author Josh Gates will bring the farthest reaches of the globe to Balboa Theatre on Saturday, February 17, 2024. An Evening of Legends, Mysteries, and Tales of Adventure” is presented by San Diego Theatres , the nonprofit that operates both San Diego Civic Theatre and Balboa Theatre.

Gates is the star and executive producer of the smash-hit Discovery Channel series “ Expedition Unknown , ” which has taken him from sweltering African deserts to the icy shores of Antarctica. During this exciting live show, he will regale the audience with stories of his greatest expeditions and give insights into the world’s most intriguing mysteries. "Since he was last here four years ago, Josh has embarked on dozens more expeditions, and probably has hundreds of stories to tell," said Cindy Bowers, director of programming for San Diego Theatres. "Even if you saw him in 2019, you'll be in for a treat, because it won't be the same show."

Josh Gates hunts down new evidence on the disappearance of Amelia Earhart. He first treks to uncharted tribal lands of Papua New Guinea and ends his journey in Fiji, hoping to uncover Earhart's remains.

Josh Gates travels to the remote and landmine-riddled jungles of Cambodia to investigate the lost city of the Khmer Empire and search for a mystical relic that gave its God King the power to incinerate his enemies.

Josh is on the trail from Russia to Germany in search of history's most expensive stolen object, The Amber Chamber. Retracing the steps of Nazi soldiers, Josh explores abandoned Nazi bunkers and a hazardous German mine.

Josh Gates journeys across the American Midwest in search of the legendary golden loot of Jesse James. Along the way, Josh debunks Jesse James myths, rappels off a cliff on Wichita Mt., and treasure hunts into Buzzards Roost.

Josh treks the stone-paved Inca Trail, ascending 20,000 ft. through the Andes and into the Peruvian Amazon in search of the undiscovered City of Gold. His road to riches takes a detour to the legendary ruins of Machu Picchu.

Josh travels to UK & Norway to unlock the secrets of the Viking Sunstone, a mystic crystal the Vikings used to conquer the seas. Before testing it, he explores a crypt in a Nordic church and descends 1000ft into a deserted mine.

(New York, NY) – October 25, 2023 – Globetrotting explorer Josh Gates is back scanning the depths of the ocean, trekking into the heart of Central American jungles, and diving into flooded tunnels beneath an active volcano in search of answers to the world’s greatest mysteries when the all-new season of EXPEDITION UNKNOWN returns on Wednesday, November 15 at 9PM ET/PT on Discovery Channel.  

In the two-part season premiere, Josh travels 6,000 miles to the tiny, South Pacific nation of Micronesia to investigate Operation Hailstone, America’s daring response to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Using cutting edge technology and eyewitness accounts, Josh dives in to help Project Recover on their mission to locate 40 downed planes and 200 American heroes lost in the mission, leading to a stunning and historic discovery. 

Throughout the season, Josh will also set sail into the Bermuda Triangle to seek the richest stash of sunken gold in the Americas, journey across northern Europe in search of a Viking king’s tomb and treasure, use a long-forgotten map to locate a lost Maya city, and team up with a former FBI agent to chase stolen loot and priceless historical artifacts from America’s most notorious couple, Bonnie and Clyde. Driven to find the truth behind the world’s most captivating legends, Josh Gates is on a mission for answers. EXPEDITION UNKNOWN chronicles his global adventures as he investigates iconic unsolved events, and hunts for lost cities, buried treasures, and sacred artifacts.

Before the U.S. Cycling Federation adopted a requirement for all bike racers to wear helmets in 1986, most people rode without one. The only helmet options at the time drew rider complaints for being too hot and heavy. But, with a bit inspiration from a NASA aircraft wing design used during World War II, more than 20,000 competitive biker racers would soon have a lighter-weight option to protect their heads. 

Jim Gentes, an industrial designer, and bicycling enthusiast developing an aerodynamic bike helmet, saw the new rule as an opportunity. He started Giro Sport Design Inc., now based in Irvine, California, to provide bike racers a speed and safety advantage. Then came the Giro Prolight, a lightweight racing helmet that was cool and aerodynamic, drawing upon a NASA-developed aircraft wing technology.

The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), NASA’s predecessor, developed the NACA 6-series airfoil during World War II to reduce drag in fighter aircraft. Raymond Hicks, an aerodynamicist at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley, helped Gentes adapt that wing design to improve airflow over the helmet, reducing drag. Compared with bareheaded racing, wind tunnel tests confirmed that the reduced drag could save one second in a little over half a mile.

To keep it lightweight, the Prolight used expanded polystyrene foam with a removable Lycra cover. Vents in the front and rear of the helmet let air flow through, using the vacuum created by the rear vents to pull air into the helmet. The vent design also smoothed airflow, reducing turbulence and drag.

In 1986, Gentes added a foam model called the Aerohead. The Hammerhead, a Prolight with a thin shell, came next, followed by the newer, streamlined Aerohead. When Gentes’ friend Greg LeMond won the 1989 Tour de France wearing the Aerohead, worldwide acclaim followed. 

Giro has changed hands several times since the 1980s and today, the brand continues to offer bike helmets and other sporting equipment and apparel.
