Fiji Surf Hut | Authentic Surf Adventure

Fiji Surf Hut is a village style house, hosted by my legendary Fijian friends, next to legendary waves. Authentic, grass roots, and all about positive relationships with the ocean and people. It's not a luxury resort, this is our home and we are opening it up to create jobs for my friends and share the beauty of the Fijian Life.

We are located between two Fijian villages on the western coast of Viti Levu near Momi Bay - pretty much as close to Cloudbreak as you can possibly be without staying on Namotu or Tavarua Island. The beautiful ocean view from the deck looks straight out to the world class surfing reefs.

Captain Taniela and the 25 ft fiberglass boat

Your Own Private Boat and Guide

After you get off the plane you will be picked up by one of the most legendary and friendly humans on the planet - Taniela. On both land and sea he will be your guide until the end of the trip. Ask him anything and he will respond with jokes and love and local insight into Fijian culture. With over 50 years of experience on Fijian waters, he knows exactly where the waves will be firing after examining the wind, tide, and swell. In Fiji, it's always offshore somewhere so don't be surprised if you find an empty reef with perfect waves.

Breakfast option: scrambled eggs, Fijian Bambakau Pancakes, peanut butter, and coffee.

Healthy Fijian Home Cooked Meals

Few things are more amazing than coming home from an epic surf to a healthy Fijian home cooked meal made with fresh veggies, fruit, and fish from the sea. We can serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner and cater to your specific needs and preferences.

Cloudbreak is famous for offering the best barrel of your life.

Surf, Eat, Sleep, Repeat.

Dream Surf Fiji - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Matanivusi Surf Resort

Nestled between a white sandy beach and a meandering creek, the eco-friendly Matanivusi Resort is set in a stunning location where guests can immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the area and experience a true tropical paradise.

Located on the beautiful Coral Coast of Fiji, Matanivusi Resort is just two hours from Nadi. Resort guests can unwind and explore everything this beautiful region of the Pacific has to offer, from surfing the world-class waves of Frigates to snorkelling the colourful coral reefs teeming with marine life. There’s something for everyone, surfers and non-surfers alike.

At Matanivusi Resort, surfers can enjoy a range of challenging surf breaks including Fiji Pipe, Frigates, Shifties, Vunaniu and J’s. These breaks are suited to experienced surfers and offer a variety of conditions, from fast, hollow barrels to long, rippable walls.

Fiji has two main surf seasons. From April to October, the low-pressure systems in the southern hemisphere produce consistent ground swell from 8 to 10 ft, then the cyclone season from December to April offers shorter swells – this is when the local breaks perform the best!

Matanivusi_Surf_Resort_SurfTrip

Eco-Friendly Fiji Surf Resort

The resort’s owners and developers, Brian and Donna McDonald, discovered this amazing piece of coastline on one of their trips to Fiji. When building the resort, they knew that a responsible development philosophy was needed and planned a construction that had as little impact on the surrounding area as possible.

Matanivusi Resort was designed by the award-winning architect, Paul Uhlmann, a surfer from the Gold Coast, Australia. It was designed to perfectly integrate into the natural landscape, the bures situated only a few steps from the ocean to give guests the ultimate Fiji experience.

When building the resort there was minimal clearing and minimal disturbance to the area. The native vegetation along the beachfront was sustained, with new planting to protect the beach from erosion and storm surges.

For Brian and Donna it was essential that once the resort opened they implemented the best sustainable operating practices and fully integrated with the Fijian villages. Rainwater is collected in tanks and used throughout the resort, as well as recycling programs to ensure all waste is sorted and disposed of through commercial contractors. Educational programs are also run in the local primary and secondary schools.

Accommodation

Nestled between the meandering creek and swaying coconut palms, Matanivusi Resort’s accommodation consists of 12 beachfront rooms with uninterrupted ocean views. The adjoining duplex-style bures are ideal for families and couples travelling together.

Surrounded by a variety of exotic flowers and fruit trees, the bures perfectly integrate into the natural environment. Experience the beauty of nature from every corner of your bure, where stunning glass panels offer uninterrupted views of the beach and rainforest.

The cleverly designed louvres capture the cool sea breezes, and ceiling fans circulate the air, meaning there’s no need for air-conditioning. However, air-conditioned rooms are available on request. Each room is beautifully furnished with a king-sized bed (or two king singles), a  mosquito net, relaxing chairs and an ensuite bathroom. All rooms are screened and there’s a spacious deck to take in the beautiful views.

Within the grounds of Matanivusi Resort, you can relax by the pool while reading a book from the resort’s library, or chill out in a hammock over the white sandy beach. You can do as little, or as much as you like while staying at this gorgeous Fijian resort.

For groups of 12, you can exclusively book the entire Matanivusi Resort and enjoy the resort’s facilities all to yourself.

Matanivusi_Surf_Resort_Accommodation

The Matanivusi Resort restaurant is perfectly positioned to admire the incredible views of the coral-fringed lagoon as you enjoy delicious meals and tropical cocktails.

At Matanivusi Resort you can look forward to a fusion of Fijian, Indian and contemporary dishes. All meals are prepared with the freshest ingredients, focusing on a sustainable approach by using resort-grown fruit, vegetables cultivated in the local villages and fresh Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi Mahi from the daily catch in Suva Harbour.

The restaurant serves three gourmet meals a day, with dinner consisting of three delectable courses. For drinks, the Dua Tali bar offers a delicious range of cocktails as well as wine, beer, spirits and liqueurs.

Are you celebrating a special occasion during your stay at Matanivusi Resort? For a touch of romance, the staff can organise a beautiful candle-lit dinner on your private deck.

Matanivusi_Surf_Resort_Food

Matanivusi Resort is the perfect place to stay for a Fiji surfing holiday. There are three right-hand reef breaks only a short boat ride from Matanivusi Resort, and the famous Frigates Pass 20 km offshore.

The surfer package includes a daily transfer (two transfers if tides permit) to the local breaks around Matanivusi Resort. There’s also the option to head out to Frigates Pass, 20 km offshore. The separate trip is run at the resort’s discretion and requires a minimum of three surfing guests.

A hollow, fast wave that breaks from 2 to 6 ft. J’s is best at high tide with winds from northeast to west. For longer waves, this breaks needs a little west in the swell.

Shifties has a deep-water take-off and is an outside point that picks up plenty of swell. It can be double the size of other waves in the region. It’s powerful, and thick and when everywhere else is flat you’re almost guaranteed a 4 ft wave at Shifties. It can be surfed on all tides, and a wind with a northerly aspect is needed.

A short wedging right with a bowl section at the end. It’s usually a bit smaller than other waves in the region, so it’s a good option for younger surfers. It’s best on a high tide.

A hollow and heavy left-hand reef break in the right conditions. Great on a 2 to 6 ft swell and with southeasterly trade winds during the winter, you’re sure to score an epic barrel ride.

Frigates is a world-class left-hander that rivals Cloudbreak for power, size and consistency. It’s located 20 km from Matanivusi Resort and picks up lots of swell. Because of the tapering of the reef, this wave can handle swells of all sizes.

Frigates is offshore in a southeasterly trade wind, so when the inside waves near Matanivusi Resort are blown out, there’ll be consistent waves at Frigates. When there’s a little west in the swell it can be sketchy, however, the end stands up well!

As Frigates can be accessed from several resorts, it can get a little crowded, however, swell over 10 ft means there’s more space in the lineup. A gun is recommended in bigger swells to take on the big drop and strong offshore winds.

Non-Surf Activities

Whether you’re surfing or not, Matanivusi Resort offers a range of incredible activities for guests of all ages. Fish, dive, swim, snorkel in the lagoon, kayak, raft, explore the beach, laze around the pool or spa, or treat yourself to an indulgent Fijian massage.

If you’d love to hook up a Trevally, Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna or Sailfish, then Matanivusi Resort is the right place for you. Bottom fishing is also great with massive Coral Trout and Red Emperors hiding in the local reefs.

The resort offers half-day and full-day fishing charters. If you’re serious, it’s recommended that you bring your own equipment and favourite lures. The right tackle would be two trolling rods with about 50-80 lb test and spinning rods with 30 lb test for Trevally.

Come see giant schools of Barracuda and Trevally and massive coral reefs teeming with marine life. Upon request, Matanivusi Resort staff can organise local dive trips directly from the resort. Matanivusi also offers PADI certification on the premises with the use of their pool for your Discover Scuba lessons.

Take a local trip out to some of the most magnificent coral reefs fringing the lagoon, where you’ll find various parrot fish, sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, clown fish, sea anemones and an array of soft and hard corals. You can snorkel inside the lagoon around the coral bombies or outside the fringing reef along the drop-offs.

SUPs & Kayaks

Take a morning paddle around the calm lagoon or an evening paddle to watch the sunset from the water. Matanivusi staff can also take you by boat to the creek where a guide will give you a tour of the area on your SUP or kayak. The SUPs are 11 ft long, and easy to paddle, even for children.

Waterfall Trek & Eco Tours

Organise a guided trip up to Korolevu where you’ll see a tropical waterfall hidden away in the lush jungle. The plantation walk will give you a great understanding of the traditional village subsistence living and medicinal plants.

Sunset Cruise

Enjoy a romantic sunset tour on Matanivusi Resort’s power catamaran with beer, wine and appetisers. For bigger groups, you can hire the whole boat for a sunset party. The tour only operates on an evening high tide.

Other Activities

Other non-surf activities at Matanivusi Resort include massages, beach volleyball, bocce balls, ping-pong, board games, the entertainment room, zip lining, whitewater rafting and mountain bike riding.

Matanivusi has a yoga teacher on site all year round. Free yoga classes and stretch sessions are offered twice daily,  catering to all levels.

Matanivusi’s beautiful yoga studio is built on an elevated wooden deck, overlooking the lush and sacred rainforest. Enjoy the calming sounds of the bush and feel the gentle wind grazing against your skin while flowing through a group or private yoga practise.

Beauty & Wellness Spa

Relax, unwind and indulge in a treatment at Matanivusi’s Beaty & Wellness Spa. With a range of treatments available in a secluded and tropical setting, there is no better place to complete your Fiji experience. Matanivusi’s Beauty & Wellness Spa is newly built with eco-conscious operations in mind.

Your Guide to Surfing in Fiji!

Bula! Welcome to AWAVE Travel’s guide to surfing in Fiji!

The Fijian archipelago is renowned amongst surfers and travelers for the unparalleled, world-class waves. It is also one of the most hospitable and friendly nations of people in the world!

This guide will explain where Fiji is and when the best times are to go. We will also look at how to get there and include a few insider hints and tips to ensure an unforgettable trip!

With a wide variety of world-class waves such as the legendary Cloudbreak, Restaurants, and Frigates, Fiji is an epic surf destination. The reef passes in the country can handle a multitude of swell, wind, and seasonal combinations. This makes it a year-round destination that has something for all surfing levels!

AWAVE Travel has a great range of resorts and surf charters in Fiji and the Pacific Ocean. These will get you to the best surf, in comfort and style!

Where is Fiji?

Fiji is an archipelago of over 300 islands nestled in the South Pacific, roughly a three-hour flight away from New Zealand. The country can be divided into three main surf regions:

Mamanuca Islands – Home to the world-famous Cloudbreak, this area holds a serious level of prestige in the surfing world. It is a small set of islands directly off the West Coast of Viti Levu, which has a variety of different reefs for each type of surfer.

Coral Coast – The perfect location to find a quieter, stunning coastline for Fiji surfing! The Coral Coast is situated in the South of the main island, Viti Levu. Less famous than the Mamanucas but packing just as much of a punch with waves such as Frigates, Fiji Pipe, and Jay’s, this is an unforgettable destination to visit.

Taveuni – Full surf isolation in tropical paradise! Taveuni is famously known as the garden island of Fiji, named after the abundance of nature and plant life that can be found there. Surf waves such as South Passage in the peaceful ambience of one of the most beautiful areas in the world.

Best time for Surfing in Fiji

When to travel to Fiji? Due to the location of the Fijian Islands in the South Pacific, there really isn’t a bad time to travel as there are always waves to surf! It is a year-round destination because of its exposure to consistent swell on its varying breaks.

Fijian summer (November – April) typically has small swells in the popular surf zones of the Mamanucas and the Coral Coast, however, when swells do arrive at this time of year they are usually accompanied by very favourable winds. Additionally, with Taveuni being situated on the opposite side of Fiji to the Mamanucas and Coral Coast, swells are generally more consistent there during the summer as the swell window is more open to surf during that time.

Fijian winter (March – October) is revered for its strong South swells and offshore winds. This is the season for monumental Cloudbreak swells, unforgettable barrels, and beautiful weather.  It’s worth noting that the World Tour hosted their Fiji event each year at Cloudbreak during May, which speaks for itself when you see the kind of waves that those past events have been blessed with. For those intermediate and advanced surfers looking to avoid the crowds, we would recommend traveling during the shoulder seasons in Spring and Fall, where consistent swell will still be plentiful!

How to travel to Fiji

How do you get to Fiji? Nadi international airport, located conveniently on the west side of Viti Levu, is the choice airport for international travel. We recommend Fiji Airways for its high-quality level of service and awesome surfboard baggage policy (surfboards go towards total baggage allowance and are not charged separately)!

If you are traveling to the Mamanucas, transport will pick you up upon airport arrival and take you on a short drive to Denarau Harbour, where a speedboat transfer will be waiting to complete the journey to the resort or charter.

For the Coral Coast, resort transport will collect you from Nadi and a beautiful drive along the southwest coast of Viti Levu will bring you to your destination. Taveuni-based trips require a domestic flight from Viti Levu to Taveuni, with further transport via car and boat required to reach one of the most idyllic vacation spots in the world! AWAVE Travel experts will be on-hand to assist in arranging logistics when traveling to Fiji!

AWAVE Travel’s favourite Waves in Fiji

The Fijian archipelago play host to unparalleled quality, world-class waves! With something for everybody, from thunderous tubes to soft, playful reefs, Fiji really is the dream destination for every surfer. The AWAVE Travel team loves surfing in this region and have picked a few of our favorite waves:

The jewel in the crown of Fijian surfing, Cloudbreak is one of the best lefts in the world! It offers those willing the chance to experience the surf of their lives, with long, barrelling, tropical waves up for grabs! A powerful wave on everybody’s bucket list!

See the forecast here .

Restaurants

A truly classic wave, Restaurants is a fast, mechanical, barrelling left that’s nestled next to the island of Tavarua. Requiring strong SW groundswell to bring it to life, with offshore conditions in trade winds, this wave is a quality, winter gem!

Swimming Pools

Directly in front of Namotu island is Swimming Pools, a fun, playful right-hander. Really popular with advanced beginner and intermediate surfers, the crystal-clear water and beautiful reef of Swimming Pools ticks all the boxes for surf in paradise!

South of Vunaniu bay, Fiji Pipe is a top pick for those looking for hollow, left-handers in the Coral Coast. Short, sharp, and to the point, Fiji Pipe offers great barrel rides with particularly epic, consistent conditions during Fiji winter!

A long, offshore, left-hander that can hold its own with Cloudbreak on its day! Frigates is a real swell magnet offering surfers consistent, punchy waves in a beautiful open ocean setting!

South Passage

Taveuni’s premier wave, also known as Maqai point, offers surfers the chance to ride world-class right-handers in an untouched corner of the world. Due to its geographical position, South Passage actually performs better in the Fijian summer, where SE trade swells and north pacific groundswells find their way to the reef often accompanied by light winds. South passage offers tubes and walls and fits well for both the intermediate and advanced surfer.

Where to stay in Fiji: Resorts

With a range of waves for all levels, surfing in Fiji has never been so luxurious. Six Senses Fiji is the perfect way to surf tropical perfection in the South Pacific.

Surf Trips in Fiji | A surfer’s bucket list for Fiji

fiji surf boat trip

When it comes to sublime surf spots, we all know that island destinations create some of the sickest swells through the combination of their winds, tides and unique seafloor scapes. On top of the often unbelievable waves, the island lifestyle lends itself to the makings of some of the most epic surfing holidays out there.

Whether you are looking to take on the monster “14-footers” of Los Tubos in Puerto Rico, try out the beauties on “Cloud 9” beach on Siargao Island in the Philippines, or are brave enough to put your board in the firing line of Fiji’s famous barrels – there are island breaks for every surfing soul out there.

If it’s variety you’re after, then Fiji is your baby – with the main surf island Viti Levu offering safe surf for all levels – and the Mamanuca group of islands throwing up more extreme surf for those looking for a challenge. Namotu Island is a particular favourite for its world-class surf breaks , which are known to wipe out even some of the most hardened professionals.

Here are some surf travel tips to make sure that your trip to Fiji is just as epic as you expect it to be:

Surfing in Fiji

Located in the South Pacific, Fiji is made up of hundreds of different islands, and this means that there is a surf spot out there to suit every kind of experience level, budget, and accommodation need . When it comes to the sheer number of incredible surf spots in one place, there simply is no beating Namotu Island, which has no fewer than six world-class surf breaks that are merely 19 minutes apart by boat, and four of these spots are within one minute of each other. The island has been described by world surfing champion Joel Parkinson as a “second home for almost 10 years now. If you're an ocean lover, it'll become your favourite place in the world."

When is the best season for surfing in Fiji?

Although the weather is pretty amazing throughout the year, and you can definitely find decent surf spots no matter what season it is – there are two distinct surfing seasons that you are going to want to plan around when getting ready for a surf trip in Fiji.

November to March is the summer season in Fiji, when wetter, warmer weather and lighter winds combine to create good surf for every level. However, the going gets really good in May, June and July, when low-pressure systems build up in the Southern Hemisphere and send some serious swells Fiji’s way. Winter months between April and October is the best time for experienced surfers to take on some of Fiji’s monster 8–10 footers and get some serious surf in.

fiji surf boat trip

Travel insurance

Even seasoned surfers that travel the globe often forget to cover their tails when searching for the next hotspot. Travel insurance is not just essential to cover your equipment, but will also give you much more confidence when taking on the famous Cloudbreak, a spot known for its ferocity. You’ll have peace of mind knowing that should you have a nasty wipeout – your medical expenses will be taken care of .

Set a daily budget

Start your surf trip in Fiji on the right foot by getting your finances in order. Download a daily budgeting app like the Travel Budget App , this will eliminate those awkward moments of wondering exactly how many more beers you can afford to buy.

Plan your surf spots

There are a number of different surf breaks that you can plan your surf trip to Fiji around, but these are our suggestions to get the swells:

Challenge yourself:

Cloudbreak : “Cloudbreak is just about three miles straight south of Namotu Island. A world class left reef pass that is regularly voted one of the 10 Best/Most challenging waves in the world. Like many tropical reef-pass breaks, Cloudbreak tends to get faster, shallower and more critical as it goes.

Cloudbreak’s reputation precedes it. Routinely ranking among the ten most challenging waves in the world, this renowned Fiji surf spot boasts fast, barrelling lefts over a shallow reef. It’s one of those breaks you just have to see to believe. It is awe-inspiring. Even if you're not up to surfing it, it's equally as thrilling to watch from the boat and see others attempt it.”

Located just three miles south of Namotu Island Resort – it’s easily accessible and is best surfed when the wind is coming from a Southwesterly direction. Cloudbreak is one of the most challenging surf spots in Fiji and should be taken seriously.

Wilkes Pass : This potent right barrel is a crushing wave that breaks on the southern tip of a lengthy barrier reef. These waves will ask questions of even the most experienced surfer – particularly around the 10-foot mark. Found just one mile Northwest of Namotu – Wilkes Pass is a great place to catch consistently great waves.

“Wilkes is long and hollow, rising straight out of the very deep water at the end of the Malolo Barrier Reef. You can expect consistent surfing here, even if it is a bit smaller during the summer. Given its location across a deep channel at the end of the Malolo Barrier Reef, you need to watch out for rips as well as the reef, but it is not as shallow as some of the other spots to surf in Fiji.

Wilkes' location opens it up to swells and all kinds of wind, which gives reasonable take-offs followed by long walls. You'll find some nice sections of speed on the wall and will end up in a shallow, inside bowl.”

Wilkes is best surfed at high tide with a northeasterly wind. Wave are often 1.5 to two metres high but 10 footer are also a regular occurrence.

Namotu Lefts: “Namotu Lefts delivers consistently hollow, powerful barrels, and long waves, though they are flatter in the summer. As the name implies, this is a left-hander that breaks consistently year-round on exposed reef. Watch out for rocks and rips here. Groundswells are more frequent than wind swells with onshore winds easily blowing it out.

Namotu Lefts is one of the best places to surf in Fiji if you want to test out some new manoeuvres. Long ride lengths and plenty of friendly sections give you more than enough time to try out new techniques or get in a long ride on a great swell.”

Located just east of Namotu, Lefts is best surfed with winds from the Northeast, and while the regular six – 15 footers are epic waves for experienced surfers, the usual two to six-foot waves offer great options for beginners, longboarding and SUPping.

Have a rest day:

Swimming pools :

“Swimming Pools is the place to have fun on the water, whether you've got a longboard or a shortboard. It is a right reef break that comes up from the deep ocean with clean groundswells. This gives it speed, power, and length that make it suitable for a wide range of surfing styles and boards. Winds from the East or Northeast will give you the best Fiji surf runs.

Expect barrels with big cutbacks, making it easy to square off and hit the lip just right. Swell heights range from 1.5m-4m and deliver near-perfect breaks every time. Swells tend to be flatter in the summer, like most of the surfing in Fiji.”

Swell that come from south/southwest produce the best conditions at Swimming Pool and it is a really great spot to get some good, clean waves without too much of a challenge.

Restaurants:

“Restaurants is a left reef break that is long and hollow. It does not get as much swell as Cloudbreak, thanks to a 180-degree turn around the island, but still manages excellent three to eight-foot waves.

Plenty of power means fast movement through barrels of perfectly shaped waves. It is long and shreddable and has even been referred to as "machine-like" due to its consistency. Both longboarders and shortboarders have fun on these waves. Lengths are normally 50-150m and tube rides of up to 15 seconds are not unheard of for skilled riders.”

When winds are coming from east/southeast is when the best surf kicks up in Restaurants. Keep in mind that it is located above a sharp coral reef and should only be surfed from mid to high tide.

Namotu Island Bar and Restaurant:

After a day out in the breakers, there is nothing better than a cold beer and a hearty, healthy plate of food. The Island Bar and Restaurant on Namotu offers both of these things in abundance and is the perfect spot for a relaxing afternoon session. Chill out and have a look at the rest of the surf spots that Fiji has to offer .

Tavarua Island in Fiji

The Best Fiji Surf Resorts for Your Next Surf Trip

Tropical Go is supported by its audience. When you purchase through links on our website, we may earn affiliate commission.

Looking for a surf resort in Fiji for your next trip? We’ve got you covered. No matter if you’re the next WSL champion or hoping to catch your first wave, Fiji is an incredible destination for you.

In this guide, we’ll reveal the sneaky tricks that Fiji surf resorts often use to get you to pay more, advise you on where to stay, and show you the best options for groups of surfers and non-surfers alike.

Frigates Wave in Fiji Surfing

Table of Contents

Things to consider when booking your Fiji surf resort stay

Compare the total cost . In Fiji, resorts are a bit cheeky when it comes to pricing–and they often hide their big money makers until you arrive.

This is a classic experience: Oh, accommodation is only $100 per night for a seaside room? That’s pretty good! But upon arrival, you discover a $90/day mandatory meal plan, $300 boat transfer fee, and $175/surf trip cost on top. Oh, and you want to go on a waterfall excursion? That’ll be another hundred, thanks! Plus the 3.5% foreign credit card fee.

When comparing surf resorts in Fiji, take a look at the price of the room, transportation to the resort (especially if it’s on a private island), mandatory meal plans, internet (if needed), and price of surf boat charter. This will be your total cost plus likely a 3.5% surcharge for using a foreign credit card. Some surf resorts, especially the resorts that market to U.S. surfers, will charge an extra 25% on top.

While these pay-per-item resorts are ideal for groups of surfers and non-surfers mixed together, they can be expensive for surfers who want two surf sessions per day. All-inclusive resorts may not be much more expensive, or are often even cheaper! If you’re in a group with non-surfers, see if the price is the same for those not taking advantage of the boat trips. If they are paying the same price, see if other activities like snorkeling trips or excursions are included in their cost.

You can save hundreds of dollars per person by spending a few minutes crunching numbers.

Surfing in Fiji

Factor the surf trip logistics . Some surf resorts have just one boat or take only one surf trip per day. This often means that you’re at the mercy of the other surfers staying at the resort. Beginners stuck in a group full of experts will have a tough time holding their own at barreling Cloudbreak. Meanwhile, experienced surfers dreaming of big waves will find themselves bored splashing around on a mushburger with a group of first-timers.

There is a major difference between resorts that offer surfing as one of their many activities, and dedicated surf resorts. Surf resorts often have multiple boats and will split surfers based on their experience levels/interests. Surf trips often happen twice per day, with a break for lunch. These resorts often have dedicated surf guides who know the surrounding surf breaks well and can help the group decide where to go to that day. There are also a range of surf camps , though these are less popular.

If you are the only surfer at a resort that offers surfing as an aside, the resort will prioritize the majority over you. If the conditions are pumping yet 10 kids want to snorkel with Nemo, the resort’s boat will probably be used to entertain the kiddos.

Available Fiji surf spots . If you book a surf resort on the Coral Coast but you dream of surfing Restaurants or Cloudbreak, you probably won’t be able to convince the boat driver to venture that far. It’s best to book a surf resort stay next to the waves you’re most excited about.

Wave at Frigates Fiji

THE BEST Fiji SURF RESORTS

Rendezvous surf camp.

Pros : Affordable, social atmosphere, multiple trips and boats per day. Cons : Non-surfers might be bored as the resort lacks a nice beach and is somewhat remote.

Rendezvous is one of the best surf resorts in Fiji for surfers who want to spend most of their time in the water and don’t care to have a luxury resort experience. The resort has basic dorm and private rooms available, and there is no mandatory meal plan. There is a pool onsite, plenty of hammocks, and a large area for socializing. Broken boards double as resort decor. It hosts a social backpacker vibe and tends to attract surfers from all around the world.

The night before, surfers put their name on a white board under the surf break they’d like to go to. This is great for groups of surfers with mixed ability levels. Surf trips last about four hours and often take place twice per day, with a short break for lunch.

Book your surf trip at Rendezvous Surf Camp

Matanivusi Beach Eco Resort

Pros : Boutique service, plenty of non-surfing activities, beautiful scenery, eco-friendly. Cons : Surfers will be charged extra for trips to Frigates.

Matanivuisi Beach Eco Resort is the type of resort that attracts non-surfers because of its beauty. With just a handful of bures (rooms), a stay here is intimate and service is highly personalized. There are plenty of surf breaks around the resort, and they also offer excursions to Frigates for extra charge. Non-surfers will be happy with the beach, kayaking, practicing yoga, snorkeling, and participating in daily cultural activities. The resort is kid-friendly and babysitters can be hired for an extra fee.

Price is inclusive of accommodation, three meals per day, snorkeling, kayaking, and trips to local breaks. Day trips and other activities like scuba diving and hiking excursions can be arranged for extra charge.

Book your surf trip at Matanivusi Beach Eco Resort

Tavarua Island Resort

Pros : Proximity to incredible breaks, quality of accommodation, family-friendly. Cons : Side-eye worthy history of privatizing waves, added tax on everything.

Tavarua Island in Fiji

If you’ve read Barbarian Days by William Finnegan, you’ve likely daydreamed about what it would’ve been like to have a private island next to world-class waves all to yourself. The heart-shaped island of Tavarua changed the course of surfing history after its nearby waves were in Surfer magazine in 1984. The resort, one of the first surf resorts in Fiji, offers a one-of-a-kind experience not easily found anywhere else.

At Tavarua Island Resort, surf trips, snorkel trips, island hopping trips, and three meals per day are included in the price. Ground transportation is not included. The resort is great for kids and nannies can be arranged for childcare.

Book your surf trip at Tavarua Island Resort

Namotu Island Resort

Pros : Proximity to incredible breaks, boutique service, great for groups with non-surfers. Cons : Claim to rent foils only to experienced foilers but we’ve seen them getting tossed around in the whitewash of Swimming Pools.

Namotu Island Resort is a picturesque private island with water so clear, you can essentially snorkel from the top of your SUP. The island itself has a handful of waves surrounding it (Swimming Pools, Wilkes, Namotu Lefts). Price of your stay includes accommodation, three meals per day, surf trips, use of boards, snorkeling gear, round-trip transfer, and yoga. There are themed weeks throughout the year dedicated to kitesurfing, families (typically only kids over 12 are welcome), and SUP/foiling with Dave Kalama. Consider this a surfer’s island paradise!

Book your surf trip at Namotu Island Resort

Maqai Beach Eco Resort

Pros : Authentic island experience, high likelihood of uncrowded surf, can find surf any time of the year. Cons : International visitors will need to reach the island of Taveuni from Viti Levu.

Pronounced “Mun-gai,” this remote surf resort has a back-to-nature type of feel with cute seaside bures, lush surrounding forest, and a relaxing atmosphere. You can wake up, check the surf around Maqai from the island itself, and hop in one of the resort boats for a trip out there. Because of its location, surf breaks year-round at Maqai. There are surf-inclusive (~1x/day) and non-surf packages available. Enjoy snorkeling from the shore, kayaking, and picking up a game of volleyball with the staff. Excursions to the island of Taveuni , one of the best islands in Fiji , are also possible. You need to do the Lavena Coastal Walk!

Book your surf trip at Maqai Beach Eco Resort

Waidroka Surf & Dive Resort

Pros : Ideal for a combined surf and scuba dive trip to Fiji. Cons : No sandy beach to hang out at onsite. 25% added tax.

Waidroka Surf and Dive Resort is located in a prime spot, surrounded by plenty of local breaks that are rarely crowded. And, the resort organizes regular trips to Frigates. Rooms are decorated with a Fijian flair and have a back-to-nature ambiance. An onsite pool, SUPs, and kayaks help pass the time in between surf sessions. Packages include accommodation, three meals per day, and transportation one-way from Suva or Nadi. Surf trips are charged as extra.

The folks at Wairoka can also help arrange a Fiji Shark Dive . We recommend saving this dive towards the end of your trip if you’d like to surf without worry. Ignorance is bliss!

Book your surf trip at Waidroka Surf & Dive Resort

Diamond Sea Safari Surf Charter

Pros : Unique way to explore Fiji, can anchor boat near best surf breaks. Cons : Not a great fit for groups with many different interests.

While it’s not a proper surf resort, consider chartering a boat and surfing just a few meters away from where you sleep. Onboard the Grazia, a catamaran that sleeps up to eight guests, you can choose your surf breaks wisely and paddle out long before the other resorts rile up their crew. Price is inclusive of all meals, surfing, snorkeling, and there are two kayaks onboard. Trips depart from Port Denarau Marina and can go to the local breaks of your choice. Longer trips can be arranged for special requests as well.

Book your surf trip with Diamond Sea Safari Surf Charter

Fiji surf trip essentials

Check that your travel insurance includes adventure activities like surfing. We recommend World Nomads . The nearest major hospital if you get injured is in Nadi, Lautoka, and Suva.

Pack a rashguard , reef-safe sunscreen , surf hat , and surf leggings to protect yourself from the sun. Roof booties are recommended.

Surf accessories like leashes , surf wax , a fin key, and ding repair kit may be challenging to find or replace on your trip. Keep your boards safe in a padded travel bag . A drybag backpack helps keep your towel and clothes dry while you surf. If you want to make a friend for life, leave all of your surf accessories with your surf or boat guide when you go.
