About Alison Sudol

A Fine Frenzy

A Fine Frenzy is the music of 22 year-old Alison Sudol. Born in Seattle to dramatic-arts teacher parents, Alison moved to Los Angeles at the age of five. With her newly single mother, Alison moved frequently around the city. She developed a strong love for the fantastic literary worlds of CS Lewis, EB White, Lewis Carroll and Charles Dickens, while becoming a passionate author in her own right. Alison also immersed herself in classical music, Motown, Aretha Franklin, swing bands, Ella Fitzgerald, Elton John, Louis Armstrong, the Beatles, Technicolor movies and classic 1950's television. After teaching herself to play piano, Alison increasingly invested her internal narratives into song form. She found solace in the melodic melancholia of new global British bands Aqualung, Radiohead, Coldplay and Keane, etc. She was also moved by the diatonic minimalism of Philip Glass and the transportive allure of Icelandic music (Bjork, Sigur Ros.) Inspired, Alison developed the sound of A Fine Frenzy – hypnotic piano arrangements under classic American melody fused into irresistible, atmospheric songs with the power to reach around the world. A Fine Frenzy is currently touring with Sean Lennon and Rufus Wainwright. She is also part of the VH1 "You Oughta Know" tour with Brandi Carlile.

A Fine Frenzy is the work of Alison Sudol, a singer/songwriter and pianist from Seattle. I love seeing her live because she puts a new spin on an “acoustic” set, playing behind a piano rather than a guitar. Alison has had her music in a ton of films and shows and it’s amazing to watch her take that kind of stuff live and see how she brings it to life off-screen.

Alison usually performs with just a guitarist and a drummer behind her, but even though her shows are generally super intimate, she definitely still knows how to own the stage and amp up the production for her fuller songs like “Blow Away.” She manages to swing back and forth between being high-energy and being passionate and emotive, and its always fun to watch her do a little bit of both.

Alison is definitely very quirky and edgy and sports adorable, flaming red hair. She is always smiling during her more upbeat songs, which connects her to her audience really well. When I saw her live at Connecticut’s Avalon Theatre, I watched the crowd fall in love as she exploded into the chorus of “What I Wouldn’t Do,” hollering up at the stage and clapping along, and it was truly an amazing moment.

Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.
