Well deserved of its name, Nyaman Na Pho (Nyaman, Kapampangan word for “delicious”) serves authentic Vietnamese specialties like Cha Gio (Vietnamese Fried Spring Rolls), Goi (Vietnamese Pork & Shrimp Salad), Pho (Beef Noodle Soup) and more Vietnamese Cuisines. Ingredients of every particular dish are hand picked right from Vietnam by the owner herself.

They also serve sweet Pinoy frozen treat, our very own halo-halo. But what stands out in this Vietnamese foodie experience is their Vietnamese Coffee. Mouthful bitter sweet taste with whiff of fairly distinct aroma of roasted coffee beans served perfectly on Vietnamese stainless steel single-cup coffee filter.

If you want to try Nyaman Na Pho Vietnamese Cuisines, visit them at Lourdes Sur East, Angeles City.

Paizano’s Pizzeria

Just along Zeppelin Street, Hensonville Subdivision in Angeles City, Paizano’s is definitely the best place to stop for hand-tossed baked pizza, sandwiches, pasta, salad, and more. In luck to experience this newly refurbished eating place as vast array of culinary delights were dished out.

Pizza galore day for everyone in the room, stretchy threads of hot melted cheese with every pizza slices we devoured, Hawaiian, Manhattan, White Pizza, Pepperoni and more exciting flavors to choose from. Rasoi Indian Restaurant

Rasoi is a decent restaurant serving Indian cuisines just along the same street as Paizano’s. Believe me, you can barely taste the strong and bold spices of their wide variety of Indian dishes savory to the tongue, from the original Indian Naan bread, the creamy tomato sauce of this orange-colored Chicken Tikka Masala, flat bread Roti, and more dishes to delight your palate! One of my favorite is the samosa with this spicy bottle mint sauce. Not a fan of hot sauce but Samosa plus the dipping sauce was just fantastic!

Ultimate Food & Travel Guide to Angeles City, Pampanga @tourismPHL

Opens at 11:00 and closes at 23:00, the only Indian restaurant in town is open for the curry lovers 365 days in a year! Yes, definitely no break in the kitchen just to serve authentic Indian cuisines all year round!

Clark Museum

Our first Angeles experience started with the relaunching event at Clark Museum. I consider this as one of my favorite part of the Angeles tour. Historical pieces, art exhibits, traditional and native hunting tools  of the Aeta tribe, volcanic rocks from Pinatubo and more local relics.

Ultimate Food & Travel Guide to Angeles City, Pampanga @tourismPHL

There is this area in the museum with lanterns displayed, lighted Christmas lanterns! And they have this gigantic lantern which is powered by a machine that when you turn the steering wheel, it produces a sequence of switching on and off of the lights.

And from the museum, we headed to the intriguing 4D theater. We were brought back to the past, from the moment Angeles City became a permanent quarter of the American forces, to the catastrophe brought by the eruption of Pinatubo, up to what Angeles City has become today.

Museo ning Angeles

In 1999, Kuliat Foundation, a non-stock and non-profit organization started their first step on preserving city’s rich history, culture and tradition with full support from the local government and city tourism office. In order to further promote city tourism, they worked hand in hand with the ongoing development of the heritage district. Beginning to open doors to the public, making there mark as a Food Capital, particularly with their ever famous Sisig, and sharing preserved culture that the city has.

Ultimate Food & Travel Guide to Angeles City, Pampanga @tourismPHL

Museo ning Angles is divided into four gallery, Sukulan Gallery, Vicente Alvarez Dizon Gallery, Balikdan Gallery, Culinarium, and the newest, Cafe Museo. Cloudy day yet just perfect for a cup of Tsokolateng Batirol and Putong Babi at Cafe Museo. We even witnessed how Chef Richard personally prepares the Tsokolateng Batirol. This warm melted tablea (pure cacao beans) chocolate drink is stirred by a wooden Batirol which is the key to its perfection. Putong Babi on the other hand is Angeles’ local version of pork buns. Made of a half slice Pandesal, egg, mashed Camote and fried in lard which gives us the idea on where its name was derived as Babi in kapampangan means Pig. The sweetish creamy taste of Tsokolateng Batirol is definitely best with the fair salty taste of the Putong Babi on a perfect drip drop cold weather.

Culinary shocker frogs and crickets, dished out for a cooking demo at the Culinarium area of the Museo. As a big fan of bizarre food, both exotics definitely won my palate hands down. What makes Betuteng Tugak (stuffed frog) a favorite is the filling, the organic flavorsome spices that enhances the taste of the meat, taste even better than Chicken. Adobong Kamaru (cricket), simple yet embraced by serious flavors of great piquancy with these crunchy cricket legs tickling your tongue.

Pamintuan Mansion

This mansion was built around the 80’s by Don Florentino Pamintuan in which ownership was later passed on to the Tablante family. Later on, the property was donated to the Central Bank of the Philippines, passed on to the national government, Department of Finance and to the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).

The first and only anniversary celebration of Philippine Independence Day (12th of June 1899) was held at the Pamintuan Mansion. It also served as the Malacañang of the North whereas the first Philippine president of the republic, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, was said to moved the seat of government from Cavite to Angeles, making the mansion as the headquarter.

Ultimate Food & Travel Guide to Angeles City, Pampanga @tourismPHL

A tour inside the mansion, we were pointed to the main entrance where the Señora’s calesa goes in and the reception area where certain parts are said to be restricted from those who don’t belong to the “alta sa ciudad” or unwelcome visitors/relatives.

Mansion was being developed as they built public comfort rooms plus a class room type audio visual room for the kids to learn. Quite fine architecture can be seen inside the mansion, a mixture of Victorian and local influence. It’s a lucky day for us since the mansion is not yet opened to the public, but we were allowed to visit the place. Inauguration of the mansion as a museum was held last August 2015.

Center for Kapampangan Studies

Quick walk from Mueso ning Angeles, just crossing the streets and we finally entered the largest university outside Manila, the Holy Angel University. We were heading to the Center for Kapmapangan Studies, which is located inside the university. Few steps, as we reached our destination, trees welcomed us, trees with quite interesting names. Most of the town names in Pampanga were derived from these trees: Dau, Balacat (Mabalacat), Panipuan, & Betis.

The Center for Kapampangan Studies promotes culture preservation of the local Kapampangans, from local craftsmanship, paintings, and other historical pieces of the city itself.

Ultimate Food & Travel Guide to Angeles City, Pampanga @tourismPHL

The Kapampangan also has their own indigenous writing system, the Kulitan, in which most of its characters came from various Asian countries. They even have this computer where you can type words and it will translate these words to the Kulitan writing.

Bale-Balayan

Bale-Balayan, the museum for the poor, was founded by an artist with the love for culture and arts preservation, Mr. Peter De Vera. A museum and music-and-dance training center, Bale-Balayan provides the less-fortunate members of the society the opportunity to develop and show their craft and artistry.

Ultimate Food & Travel Guide to Angeles City, Pampanga @tourismPHL

From Cordillera inspired library and reception area in the entrance, we moved to the Spanish influenced area of the museum. They have this prayer room area, where the “Our Lady of Montserrat” is placed. They also have there own interpretation of the station of the cross, influenced by social, political and environmental issues. These art pieces are made of real human blood stains which they collect from the flagellants who partake and scourge themselves in public every Semana Santa. They also have this Asian influenced meditation room with various wood and metal sculptures, crafted by the locals and some imported from other Asian countries.

Ultimate Food & Travel Guide to Angeles City, Pampanga @tourismPHL

We even witnessed a great performance from the children as they played native instruments and we had some snack and treats whilst watching them (I love the Tanglad tea that they served).

Bale-Balayan is located at 40-22 Araw Malansik Street, Barangay Sta. Teresita, Angeles City. You can contact them via email, [email protected] or thru mobile, (+63) 917 – 511 – 1904 or via Facebook, www.facebook.com/sinukwan

Deca Wake Clark Park

Ultimate Food & Travel Guide to Angeles City, Pampanga @tourismPHL

Basic safety tips as shared by the owner, specially along the Pro’s Area, if out of control and heading for an obstacle that you wanna get away from,  you just need to let go of the handle, and if you fall in the water, keep an eye all the time. Watch out for other wakeboarders and handles that travels at around 30 km/h. Of course, you don’t want to get hit by those handle in the head. Just pay attention. Life vest and helmet will be provided by the staff upon registration. They also have shower rooms within the area. Planned to just try wakeboarding in the Beginner’s area but we don’t want to waste time with the long queue so we moved to the Pros area, assuming that we can go along with all those wakeboarding enthusiasts who can lift there boards and jump off the ramps! A real kickass experience, I’ll definitely comeback! (for more wipeout experience haha)

Pampanga Food Trip 2024: Famous Restaurants and Their Best-sellers

food trip angeles pampanga

Pampanga is known as the Culinary Capital of the Philippines for all the mouthwatering reasons. A Pampanga food trip is all you need to taste the province’s best dishes.

Only a two-hour ride from Metro Manila, go up north and do what every foodie must do: E-A-T.

Restaurants to include on your Pampanga food trip: Where to eat, what to order

Where to eat in Pampanga, you may ask. Below is a list of must-try restaurants and dishes. These are the places where you can get to taste how authentic the meals are. Also included are the best sellers for each restaurant.

1. Everybody’s Café

Best-seller: morcon.

Everybody’s Café is an exotic restaurant. So expect to see betute (fried stuffed frog), kamaru (fried crickets), and tapang kalabaw (cured carabao meat) on the menu. These items sold out fast, so be there as early as possible if you want to try them.

If your palate is not ready, the restaurant also serves Kapampangan comfort food such as mami, sinigang na sugpo, embutido, and tsokolate (chocolate batirol), which take at least three hours to prepare. But morcon, the house specialty, remains to be Everybody’s Café’s best-seller.

food trip angeles pampanga

There is a mini shop inside the restaurant. They sell the most delectable sylvannas in Pampanga.

There are two Everybody’s Café branches; one in  Nepo Mart in Angeles and MacArthur Highway in Del Pilar, San Fernando City. Choose the second one because it is the actual ancestral house that was turned into a restaurant.

2. Aling Lucing’s Sisig

Best-seller: sisig.

Sisig is originally from Pampanga. Aling Lucing’s Sisig claims that it’s the first to offer the delicacy made from pig’s head meat (cheeks and ears) and other parts that were considered scrap then. Today, sisig is known as a ubiquitous beer match and is almost always present in every Filipino drinking session. Luciana Cunanan, or simply Aling Lucing, the Sisig Queen, introduced the dish in the 1970s. Incidentally, Aling Lucing claims to serve the best sisig in Pampanga.

The streetside eatery also offers sizzling pusit (squid) on top of the best-seller, sisig. There are many options to choose from a la turo-turo style, including fish, pork, chicken, chicharon bulaklak (ruffled fat crackling), and tokwa’t baboy (fried tofu and steamed pork).

Aling Lucing’s Sisig is located in Glaciano Valdez St., Angeles City.

3. Mila’s Tokwa’t Baboy

Best-sellers: tokwa’t baboy and sizzling sisig.

Another sisig joint in the province that also claims the origin of this indulgent delicacy is Mila’s Tokwa’t Baboy. Their version is on the crispy side, although the same ingredients were used in preparing it. The carinderia began operation in 1989.

food trip angeles pampanga

Its best-seller other than sizzling sisig is tokwa’t baboy served with its special sauce made from soy sauce, celery, and tomatoes. You have never tasted something like this before for sure.

Mila’s Tokwa’t Baboy is a few blocks away from Aling Lucing’s Sisig. It is located in San Andres St.

food trip angeles pampanga

Café Fleur is also known for unique dishes such as crispy shrimp okoy (shrimp cake) and crispy pork belly, and macadamia kare-kare (stew in peanut sauce)–its appetizer and main course best-sellers, salted egg bibingka (cassava) cheesecake, lamb caldereta with kesong puti (cheese), and pandan (screwpine) sansrival.

The restaurant is located in Miranda St. Brgy. Sto. Rosario, Angeles City.

food trip angeles pampanga

Speaking of which, Historic Camalig serves longganisa (sausage) and salted egg-flavored pizzas. Other best-sellers include tinapa (smoked fish), tuyo (dried fish), and chicken adobo pizzas.

Cisan’s, another restaurant in Pampanga that serves Japanese-Thai-Vietnamese dishes, is also owned by the Nepomuceno clan.

Historic Camalig is located a few meters away from Café Fleur. It is specifically located in Camalig Square, Dalan Sto. Rosario, Angeles.

6. The Original Razon’s

Best-sellers: halo-halo and pancit palabok.

food trip angeles pampanga

From its humble beginnings as a refreshment parlor, The Original Razon’s became a household name thanks to its halo-halo and pancit palabok, both of the diner’s best-sellers. The owners even included the tagline “The Halo-Halo & Palabok that Made Guagua Famous.”

Razon’s opened in 1972, serving what we now call the minimalist halo-halo. Their version has only four ingredients. The quaint, family-friendly restaurant also has a mini shop inside selling chicharon (crackling), uraro (arrowroot), bottled sardines, and taba ng talangka (crab fat).

Razon’s is located along the MacArthur Highway in Mabalacat, Pampanga.

7. Apag Marangle

Best-sellers: adobong camaru, sizzling balut, and relyenong betute.

Apag Marangle, like Everybody’s Café, serves exotic dishes. What makes the experience more unique is the menu that resembles a banana leaf and the table set inside connecting nipa huts partially submerged in the water.

food trip angeles pampanga

The menu items are written in Kapampangan but also include the English translation of each. Their best-sellers are adobong camaru (mole crickets in vinegar and soy sauce stew), sizzling balut, and relyenong betute (stuffed frog).

It also offers ningnang (grilled) and pulutan, including tokwa’t liempo (fried tofu and steamed pork belly), sizzling balut, chili garlic camaro, and tugak king bawang ampong lara (chili garlic frog).

The rustic place is huge, with a small pond where the catfish are contained, a play area, a mini zoo with birds and monitor lizards, and a selfie spot. The place is surrounded by greens, so you’ll have a relaxing yet delicious meal.

8. 1956 Downtown Café

Best-sellers: trianggulo, sinigang na lechon, crispy hito and halo-halo.

1956 Downtown Café is owned by another renowned Kapampangan chef, Chef Claude Tayag of the Bale Dutung fame. The restaurant was established to commemorate his birth year.

food trip angeles pampanga

The retro-styled diner serves unique dishes from crispy aromatic spring duck and lechon taco to halo-halo with crema de pastillas. Halo-halo is one of its best-sellers along triangulo (fried samosas filled with tinapa, pili nuts, and spinach), sinigang na lechon (roasted pig in sour stew), and crispy hito (catfish).

Eating here will make you feel nostalgic with all the memorabilia despite being a relatively small diner.

9. Nathaniel’s Bakeshop

Best-seller: buko pandan salad.

When Nathaniel’s opened in 1994, it mostly offered frozen dessert products such as juices, fruit salad, sylvannas, and its best-seller buko pandan salad. The last one sells out so fast the crew has to replenish the stock on the fridge several times daily.

food trip angeles pampanga

Now, the selection widens to include chicharon, bucheron (chicken gizzard crackling), cashew-flavored barquillos (crispy waffles), puto pao (steamed buns), and other local delicacies. A bigger portion of the main branch, where the plant is located at the back, is converted into a restaurant.

No one can mistake Nathaniel’s stores or products because of its mint green branding. The main branch is located in

food trip angeles pampanga

Her place is like a mini museum with all her family’s artifacts when cooking. There are old ovens, stone mills, wooden mortar and pestle, sewing machines turned into a table, and hundreds of biscuit molds passed from generation to generation.

Kusinang Matua ni Atching Lillian is not actually a full-blown restaurant, but including it in the list is a must too.

4 Restaurants We Tried in Pampanga: A Food Tour Itinerary

4 Restaurants We Tried in Pampanga: A Food Tour Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

When TLC invited us to join them in retracing Anthony Bourdain’s steps in touring Pampanga, we were definitely psyched. We’re fans of great food and fans of Bourdain, so we started off bright and early to join TLC and SkyCable for the FoodSteps Culinary Tour in Pampanga for a day of eating and learning.

tlc-asia-logo

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Kusinang Matua ng Atching Lilian Borromeo

Address: Brgy. Parian, Mexico, Pampanga

Lilian Borromeo is a force to be reckoned with. When we arrived she was organizing the buffet of Kapampangan breakfast dishes including tamales, meatloaf, longganisa, dinuguan, and a host of several other dishes that were homemade and served fresh. We filled ourselves with breakfast while she went around, made sure the buffet was refilled before dishes ran out, and talked to a few of us. She said she was a fan of Anthony Bourdain, but did not know exactly who he was, self-deprecatingly saying “Pag matanda ka na di mo na inaalam talaga, basta papanoorin mo kapag nandiyan” (When you’re older, you don’t really pay attention, but you watch when you see them).

San Nicolas cookies ingredients, Kusina Matua

She started her demo of baking the famous Panecillos San Nicolas and shared her experiences of making them. Charming and humble, she told us why she’s making sure the recipes of the 16th century are still in circulation, saying there are people making old things new, but that she wants to start from the root and make sure the original recipes aren’t forgotten.

Unlike most chefs, she shares all her secrets and tricks with the crowd, and lightheartedly cracked jokes often, with a demeanor that only endeared her more to everyone. We listened and asked questions, and after the demo, the line to take pictures with her was understandably long as we all wanted to remember this sweet, amazing woman who is living gracefully, and so joyfully.

Bale Dutung by Chef Claude Tayag

Address: Paul Ave, Angeles City, Pampanga

Happily filled with breakfast, we piled into our Luxe Bus again and travelled the 30 minutes to Bale Dutung, Claude Tayag’s family home. We knew we were in for a treat, as we had been told that ten courses would be served, the food that Bourdain had eaten when he had visited, plus a few more courses to complement those. Starting off with a salad, we ate leisurely through the ten courses, with Chef Claude introducing each course with the history and background of each dish. While each course had its own appeal, our table raved about the lumpiang ubod, adobong pugo and the seafood kare-kare.

Kare-kareng Laman Dagat, Bale Dutung

One woman at the other table even cried after being asked how she liked the kare-kare, saying it was the best kare-kare she’s ever had. Four hours of eating did not seem quite enough to absorb all of the information and delectable quality of each plate set before us, and we left moaning in contentment to head to our next stop.

Susie’s Cuisine

Not really a restaurant. More like a food store. Susie’s Cuisine did not leave us wanting, and sent us bags of Pampanga’s best kakanin, and until a few days later (with a ton of restraint to not eat it all in one sitting), we were still enjoying their sylvanas, and our favorite, carabao milk pastillas, perfect with a cup of coffee for merienda.

Address: 463B Miranda St, Angeles City

Café Fleur was the last stop for our Pampanga food tour, and while we thought we couldn’t fit in another bite in our bellies, the cooking demos by the three in house chefs of Tamales Pampaguena, Okoy and Sisig got us excited for the food to come.

Crispy Okoy and Shrimps by Cafe Fleur

As Chef Chloe explained, the street food served in the café are elevated concepts to not just look great, but use herbs they grow in the garden, and are made of ingredients sourced locally. With a backdrop of the old house they converted into the multi-concept restaurant, it was the perfect end to the day.

Every stop we went to, while offering different cuisine, all had the same things in common: People committed to showing the best of what Pampanga has to offer, and a passion for making things delicious. It was a delight to experience and be in the presence of people who pride themselves in their region’s cuisine and are sharing their expertise to locals and outsiders alike. The world is ready for Filipino food and where better to start but at home, tasting what our local chefs have to offer, and sharing it with the world. We left the day prouder of our heritage as Filipinos, and as eaters, to have gone through that marathon of eating and lived to tell the tasty tale.

Angeles City Food Trip Part I: A Taste of Local Culinary Fare

Where to Eat in Angeles City, Philippines

Table of Contents

The city of Angeles doesn’t fall short when it comes to authentic cuisine. The locals take food seriously, which is evident in the taste of their dishes and delicacies. While it is common knowledge that many Kapampangans are good cooks, the secret remains undiscovered until you get to sample their food firsthand. They don’t take shortcuts when cooking and are generous in ingredients – it’s that simple.

My recent visit to Angeles city in Pampanga has got to be the most food-filled trip I have ever had. Trying out the local dishes is simply a must – from the famous sizzling sisig and the exotic camaru down to the luscious delicacies like tibok-tibok and tsokolate batirol.

Now, the hardest part is choosing where to get a taste of the best local food. To help everyone decide, here’s a roundup of restaurants offering authentic Kapampangan dishes at its finest.

Mila’s Tokwa’t Baboy and Sisig

Mila's Tokwa't Baboy version of Sizzling Sisig

Angeles is home to the best-tasting sisig dishes in the country, mainly because the first sisig was founded in a humble kitchen in this city and partly because people here are really good cooks. Mila’s is one of the go-to places when you crave a savory serving of sizzling sisig. Their version is far from the usual one served in Metro Manila – crispy, crunchy bits of pork cheeks, ears, and snout topped with chopped onions and seasoned with secret ingredients. They need not put mayonnaise or egg to keep it simple, yet the sensation it brings to the tastebuds is heavenly.

Mila’s Pako Salad

Their Tokwa’t Baboy is also a surefire hit among locals and tourists. Mila’s has transformed this plain dish into an extraordinary creation of deep-fried tofu pillows, pig ears, and soy-vinegar sauce. Don’t forget to order a platter of their refreshing Pako Salad, made of ferns, tomatoes, and onions relished with salted egg and homemade vinaigrette.

Mila’s has gained a loyal following through the years for their superb food choices set at an affordable price. No wonder people often flock to this humble restaurant day and night.

Culinarium at Museo Ning Angeles

generous amount of ingredients at Museo ning Angeles

To recognize and preserve local food and its preparation, Kuliat Foundation Inc. established the Culinarium on the second floor of Museo Ning Angeles. This culinary museum aims to preserve and perpetuate the traditional Kapampangan culinary arts, featuring a live kitchen for cooking classes and food demos, an exhibit of the old kitchen, and more.

there goes the camaru

The resident chef showed everyone how to cook Camaru (cricket) and Betute (frog) in the Kapampangan way. The crickets were sauteed with tomatoes, onions, garlic, and herbs. The betute, on the other hand, was more challenging to cook since the frogs needed to be skinned just moments before cooking them. The filling, made of tomatoes, onions, and meat, was cooked and stuffed inside the frog’s body before frying it for the final touch. The camaru was surprisingly good, and the betute tasted like chicken.

breakfast at Angeles Cafe Museo

Come mid-afternoon, the lobby of Museo Ning Angeles is turned into a cozy nook where people flock to have some good eats or just sit back and relax between tours. Cafe Museo serves traditional local favorites like the Tsokolate Batirol, Kape ng Don Angel, and Inumang Berdi. The choices in their menu come with an exciting story that will make you appreciate the food and drink more.

Welcome to Cafe Museo

I was more than glad when the Puto Babi and Tsokolate Batirol were served for breakfast. My first impression of a regular pandesal and chocolate drink was brushed away after taking a sip and a bite. The Puto Babi is made from pandesal topped with mashed kamote and bagoong before frying in pork oil. It is best paired with a hot cup of Tsokolate Batirol, a traditional, rich hot cocoa drink.

happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast

19 Copung-Copung Grill

buffet spread at 19 Copung-Copung Grill

If you’re looking for a place serving delicious and exotic Kapampangan dishes, 19 Copung-Copung is a good choice. The resto resembles a traditional Filipino buffet setup, with nipa huts, wooden tables and chairs, and servers wearing traditional attires. Their buffet spread offers an array of choices, from crispy crablets and camaru, liempo, and bopis, down to adobong balut, binukadkad, and frog dishes.

19 copung food choices

They also hosted a cooking demo and showed us how to cook their version of camaru and balut sisig. I personally find both tasty, though I enjoyed eating the balut sisig more. You can also enjoy ala carte dining here after 2pm.

A delicious sisig starts with these

Address: 222 McArthur hi-way, Balibago, Angeles, Pampanga Phone: (045) 892 1922

Food is an integral part of exploring a new place. The various culinary finds present in Angeles won’t disappoint traveling foodies. Their local food exudes fragrance, and the flavor entices even the pickiest eater.

Aling Lucing Sisig

Aling Lucing Sisig is not only one of the best restaurants in Angeles, Pampanga, but it also serves arguably some of the best sisig in Pampanga. In fact, the sisig that most Filipinos are familiar with, which uses grilled and chopped pork face as its main ingredient, was created by Lucia Cunanan, also known as Aling Lucing. Many people, including the late chef Anthony Bourdain, like to pair Aling Lucing Sisig with a few bottles of beer.

Aling Lucing Sisig interior

Apart from the sisig, the restaurant is also known for other affordable dishes like liempo (pork belly), tokwa’t baboy (fried tofu and pork), and other grilled food. The food is the star of this restaurant, so don’t expect too much when it comes to its interiors, as it is mostly simple. The restaurant has other branches in Pampanga and other parts of the Philippines, but if you want to visit the main restaurant, head to Glaciano Valdez Street in Angeles.

13. Apag Marangle

Apag Marangle floating cottages

Apag Marangle has several branches in Pampanga and outside of the province, and the original restaurant in Bacolor is the place to go to if you’re looking for a floating restaurant in Pampanga. It’s not literally floating on water, but the restaurant sits on stilts in the middle of a man-made lake that also doubles as a fish pond. The restaurant also has its own farm where they source some of its ingredients.

Apag Marangle food baskets

In Kapampangan, Apag Marangle literally means to serve food in the field, and with authentic Kapampangan dishes like sisig, betute (stuffed deep-fried frog), and suam na mais (soup with corn, vegetables, and meat) cooked fresh, dining in the restaurant definitely feels like having a meal in a Pampanga farm.

The restaurant also serves other Filipino cuisine staples like tinolang manok (chicken soup dish), relyenong bangus (stuffed milkfish), and pakbet (vegetable dish). They also have vegetarian options like ensaladang mangga (green mango salad) and ensaladang pako (fiddlehead fern salad).

One of the best restaurants in Clark Pampanga is Binulo Restaurant, which is located along the Manuel A. Roxas Highway. Apart from serving Kapampangan and Filipino dishes like sisig, kare-kare (oxtail and tripe stew in peanut sauce), lechon kawali (crispy deep fried pork), chicharon bulaklak (deep fried pork intestine), pako salad, and tibuk-tibuk (pudding dessert), Binulo also offers grilled U.S. steaks like t-bone and porterhouse steaks, so you can enjoy different cuisines in one meal.

Compared to other restaurants in Pampanga, the ambiance and interiors of Binulo Restaurant, while still traditional and Filipino, is a bit more upscale, and this is also reflected in the prices of their dishes served, so remember to bring enough cash when dining here.

If you want to take home Filipino snacks, you can also stop by their pasalubong shop, where you can buy delicacies like lengua de gato (butter cookies) and mamon (sponge cake).

Bale Capampangan buffet

If you’re looking for a restaurant in San Fernando Pampanga that serves authentic Kapampangan cuisine, you should consider Bale Capampangan. While you can order some of their best-selling food like sisig, lechon kawali, and sizzling chicken for take-out, you’ll get more bang for your buck if you take advantage of their eat-all-you-can buffet promo.

For its price, Bale Capampangan can be considered the best buffet restaurant in Pampanga. Here you can enjoy unlimited servings of kare-kare, adobong balut (fertilized bird egg), lenguang baka (beef lengua), halo-halo (shaved ice dessert), and baked kamote (sweet potato).

Bale Capampangan

The more-than-a-decade old family restaurant also features interior and decor that uniquely Kapampangan, with artwork that shows visitors a glimpse of Kapampangan history and culture.

If you’re bringing a car or plan to dine with a big group, arrive well before your planned eating time as the restaurant’s popularity means it is usually packed with people. Expect to wait a bit before you find a parking spot nearby and are seated.

10. Downtown Café 1956

Downtown Cafe

Downtown Café 1956 in Angeles is the more casual sister of another restaurant on this list, Bale Dutung. The café aims to transport diners back to the 1950s, what the owners consider “the good old days.” Although the café interiors can remind you of an American diner (complete with a jukebox), the food served here is distinctly Kapampangan and Filipino.

  • Book Angeles Pampanga hotels for your vacation

For breakfast, you can try pindang damulag or house-cured carabao meat flakes. For a hearty lunch or dinner, you can try the sisig, caldereta (beef tomato stew), kare-kare, or asadong matua (chicken in tomato stew). Those with a sweet tooth will love the tibuk-tibuk and the leche flan cheesecake.

They also serve international dishes, so those traveling in a large group will find it easy to find a dish to match everyone’s preferences.

Pampanga Food Trip – Angeles City

Famous for its culinary tradition, Pampanga boasts some of the Philippines’ best dishes. In fact, some of those uniquely Filipino dishes were born out of the ingenuity of the Pampangueños. On the day of the Giant Lantern Festival , my friends and I decided to go on a food trip in Pampanga. Along with this, we sought to take a peek of Pampanga’s culture by visiting some of its churches and old houses.

The trip began with a bus ride a quarter before nine in the morning from Cubao headed to Dau. A little more than an hour later, we were already at Dau’s bus terminal, waiting for our rented car to pick us up.

Due to my fellow traveler’s request, we found ourselves in this little coffee shop in SM Pampanga for our first stop – Caffe Bene . I ordered honey cappuccino, one of the shop’s limited holiday offerings. To my surprise, the coffee was actually very good – a great way to start the day!

Next, we headed to Angeles City center to find Camalig Restaurant . Camalig is a Filipino word for barn. True enough, this was formerly a barn converted into a restaurant. Unfortunately, nicer portion of the restaurant was closed, and we had to make do with dining outdoors. Camalig Restaurant is famous for its pizza, wherein it incorporates Filipino flavor to this Italian dish by using ingredients like salted egg, tuyo (dried fish), and longanisa (local sausage). We tried its most famous pizza, Doy’s Kapampangan, and Marco’s 3-way Tuyo version. The tuyo pizza had a lot of promise when it comes to flavor, yet the dough of the pizza didn’t meet my expectations. The longanisa one had a more traditional meaty pizza flavor.

To burn the pizzas we ate, we took a break from the food fest and went to Museo Ning Angeles . Visitors are required to make a donation of 50 pesos per head. It looked like an old house converted into a museum. On the first floor were dioramas and photos of Pampanga heritage – from various Filipino traditions like fiesta and pamamamanhikan to historical stories of how the Americans made Angeles the city of angels after establishing the Clark Freeport Zone. Upstairs were displays of potteries and kitchen utensils, along with a display of Pampanga dishes.

Museo NIng Angeles

Opposite the museum was the Church of Angeles City. We went inside, took a few minutes to pray, then went back on our tour. We decided to walk to the old Pamintuan house , since it was just around the corner. Unfortunately, it was closed. It turns out you’d have to make arrangements prior to visiting. Disappointed, we simply snapped a photo of the facade.

We headed back to the city center to find Gill’s Buko Sherbet in Nepo Mart. It took us a while before finally arriving at the store. I’m not sure if it’s not too famous here, or we were asking the wrong people! When we finally arrived at the shop, I ordered a buko lychee sherbet for myself. Talk about brain freeze! 😛 I wish I tried their ice cream too.

Next, we headed to the restaurant pioneer of sisig, a Filipino dish made of grilled chopped pork and onions. It was sizzling (as expected) when it was served on us, and we instantly had to mix it, else the meat would burn. Fatty, albeit very delicious. This one had a more slimy texture than the ones I tried in Manila, but with rice, everything goes well. Yum! Tip: Order this with Royal (the orange soft drink), just like the locals do! We were the only ones who drank Coke.
