Restaurant SIXTY

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

The food was okay and the service was pleasant however it was not as good or as memorable as the other restaurants that we dined at whilst visiting Moscow. The restaurant itself was beautiful and the view was still impressive despite it being a cloudy... day. It had a nice atmosphere but we were quite cold! It's not a place that I would return to in a hurry. More

This restaurant is NOT for couples on a romantic date. The music is too loud, the people watching is too distracting, the interiors are wowing, and the views command abandoning one's table in a rash to snap that one more perfect photo. The visit starts... with a lush lobby and a high speed lift that takes you up 62 floors in a swoosh. Ears still clogged, you are greeted by gorgeous welcome girls who escort you to your table in a huge hall cleverly divided into intimate cosy zones, all surrounded by floor to ceiling windows and a glass ceiling. Despite the sanctions imposed by Russia on foreign food imports, only 3 items were not available on the extensive menu: buffalo mozzarella, asparagus and foir gras. I am appalled by the reviewer who chose a burger from the menu. Seafood hot starters could be a meal in themselves: Wasabi grilled prawns, crab legs and other shell fish are superb in freshness, taste and presentation. Salads have fresh and crispy greens (where do they come from?) and delicate dressing. The mains include, just to name a few, all usual cuts of beef, rack of lamb, black cod, australian baramundi, halibut. The service was superb, one meal followed another seamlessly. The waitress had little English but menu contains English and we had no difficulties at all. The wine list has great choices served properly. People watching was fun. The restaurant had probably the highest concentration of gorgeous russian women under one roof, which proved a bit distracting to some of our party. Every half hour or so, the restaurant will turn up the music which is a sign that they are about to open the windows exposing the most spectacular views of Moscow. It's quite exciting and provides a welcome wave of fresh cool air. In conclusion, the food and service are superb, the atmosphere is fantastic, the views are spectacular - an absolute must in Moscow. Very good service and indeed having good food and atmosphere. The only thing I can criticize is the size of the raw oysters, just a bit disappointed. But overall, fantastic experience!

Don't go to Sixty. The reception was rude. When we got seated they said, we can only have the table for one and a half hours, the food is too expensive to be told that. Service is awful, we got served a little bit of... water in the beginning, and that was it. The waiter never came by and asked if we wanted more. Luckily I brought some water myself, so I survived my stay here. It was also not possible to book a table over the phone for lunch, which is weird. There was also a camera lady forcing us to take a picture. We said no, but she insisted on taking a photo and didn't tell us what she needed it for, we assumed it was for their Instagram. She even asked us to stand up and move more together while we just had received our food. We told her no, but she did not understand. After a while, she left, but she managed to take one picture of us while we were sitting down, and after lunch was over, she came back and asked if we wanted to buy a framed photo she had taken of us. We said no thanks. I'm happy I didn't go here in the evening because it would have completely ruined my evening. I don't recommend this place. More

There are a tables near the windows, but it's impossible to reserve these tables in advance. It's so strange, because if I book a table in advance I'd like to have a choice and garantee the table near the window with view to Moscow. Why... do I need a reservation at all? We booked a table and came to the restaraunt 30 min.later than the table was booked. Hostes said that our reservation was cancelled because of our late visit. They didn't call us and didn't ask us to confirm our visit. It's Moscow, a lot of traffic jams and it's impossible to be in time. And the last one- there is no table in non-smoking place. Many people smoke during the dinner and other guests have to smell this. The restaraunt should have tables for non-smoking people! There should be a choice! This restaraunt was much better when it was opened 2 years ago (I visited it in august 2011). Now it has become much worse! It seems like night club. not restaraunt. More

I went to this restaurant hoping for a nice Borsch with a good view of Moscow city, but was rather disappointed with the usher. Left me in the central area and there was no one who attended to me despite having been there for a... good 15 mins or so. I decided to leave the restaurant soon after. Food can be fantastic, view can be fantastic but bad service just drives your customer away! More

Crooked restaurant. Very bad. Forget it. Definitely. Noisy, impossible to have a conversation. Bad service. They even do not consider ladies, they are not served first... My dish was cold when served. At the end of your dinner they are asking you cash first for... paying the bill and then if you cannot pay with cash they are asking you for a black or gold credit card instead and if you cannot provide it they charge you 10% more... More

We've celebrated my wife's birthday there. I specifically mentioned this in the order and loudly declared this once more when we've arrived (it was Friday, 15.01.2016). No Birthday cake and/or song for us. I've specifically told the waiter once more before we've order the desert.... No result. Awful. Furthermore, we've being promised a discount on my premium (platinum) Mastercrad, but instead we've being over-charged for USD 50!!! Unfortunately we didn't keep the bill (check) - our mistake. And now we cannot even claim the fraud. Awful!!! More

My girlfriend and I decided to try out the "famous" sixty restaurants. Actually I could never complain about reatauranrs of the Ginza chain. Usually they would have friendly, more or less skilled and especially English speaking waiters. This general rule obviously does not apply on... Sixty. The restaurant itself is really beautiful, we liked the interior design, the view and just the overall setting. The waiters in there though are just worse than peasants. We had around 5 different waiters serving us, constantly switching and not knowing about what the other one is doing. Instead of sending an English speaking waiter to our table, we had someone not speaking a single word, just taking to my girlfriend in Russian, and not giving me the feeling of being involved in any way. There was not only a lack of language skills, but also a lack of any kind of education. This person was the worst waiter I have had for a while. I asked for extra wasabi when our sushi came and the wasabi arrived when the sushi was gone, the 2nd order of drinks arrived after we were done with dinner for a long time. He was not smiling, not charming, not good looking, not caring about his customers at all,b just overall the lowest performance of a waiter. I've been eating in a lot of high class restaurants all over the world and I am absolutely willing to pay a lot of money if I get a return on my investment. I feel myself capable to judge that sixty is just overrated and overpriced for what you get. The service is worth nothing at all. The food is just average with too high prices. The crowd visiting that place is almost as bad as the waiters. It is full of wannabe new rich thugs, who would not even be allowed to enter a restaurant in Paris the way they look and behave. So all in all I can only say it is a palace full of peasants More

Actually the dinner was fine. And we are normally good spenders. But: 1) the waiter tries to sell you the most expensive food and much much more than what you really can eat 2) we paid more than USD 240 per person and we asked... for a vodka after the bill and we had to pay again for it. 3) And, sincerely, Mr Novikov, is unacceptable to put a person who doesn’t speak english at the concierge. We had to use google translator to get a damned taxi after 30 minutes!!! I UNDERSTAND WHY IT WAS ALMOST EMPTY ON FRIDAY... More

Pre-booked a table by the window to enjoy the view from 60th floor. Upon arrival the staff impolitely denied having made such a reservation. Very bad start of the evening. This is disappointing, since the view is really the main attraction here. Food is decent,... service is medium, despite plenty plenty of staff, and hence a somewhat overpriced experience. One can see that a lot of attention is paid on presentation. Starters were nice, but portions are merely samples. Fish was overcooked, decently presented. The wine list is short and grossly overpriced, which is - unfortunately - not unusual in Moscow. Overall, Sixty was a somewhat disappointing experience! More

Worst restaurant ever!!! Service was terrible, no English spoken and food never arrived!!! They didn't care about us at all because they didn't understand. Moscow has better places!!!

The first we want to sorry about the “worst dinner”. We will immediately solve the problem with service and no English spoken waiters. Thank you for your review, we have to know all the problems to become better every day.

Bad and slow service, so so food, arrogant staffs. If you like a combination of these 3 qualities then step this way. To be considered only as a place to take photos and then leave immediately elsewhere. The staffs could not care less about quality... of services but are more than ready to check on the way you dress up for the occasion. My suggestion: order one drink, take photos and go elsewhere for real delicious dinner or lunch. Moscow has a lot more to offer than this place. More

Most of this has been said before on this site, but it's worth reiterating just how awful this place is. Yes, the view and the decor are great but the positives are far outweighed by the negatives. The door staff are spectacularly rude. It was... clear that even though we had a reservation they didn't think we were fabulous enough to eat there. Our waiter was totally inept. We waited 45 minutes for our drinks, our starters and mains all came together, and, after we sent out mains back because we wanted to eat our starters first, the same mains came back later on when we were ready for them, stone cold. They hadn't even bothered to reheat them. We sent them back again and complained to the manager. By way of an apology he brought us some free desserts - only we hadn't eaten our mains at that point. The whole evening was a total farce and not cheap either. This restaurant may not be extremely expensive by Moscow standards but for £100.00 a head the food simply isn't good enough and the service is unforgivable. AVOID! More

Nice location with perfect views to Moscow city and Moscow. What is bad you can not reserve by phone a table if want one to be close to windows. You have to reserve, visit them for deposit and then come again for dinner/lunch. The food... is average and Ginza has much simple locations with much more better food. So this is mainly a place to visit for views. More

9 MICHELIN-starred restaurants in the first edition of the MICHELIN Guide dedicated to the capital of Russia ; 3 MICHELIN Green Stars awarded to local Chefs paving the way for sustainable gastronomy.

Russia Michelin Star Revelation

food trip restaurant menu

The long-awaited arrival of the MICHELIN Guide marks a recognition of the rapid development in gastronomic culture in Russia over the past 30 years. The unique history and traditions of the region, formed by the variety of high-quality local products from the Far East, the Altai Republic, the Black Sea and the north-west of Russia, inspire talented chefs to create exquisite culinary masterpieces that cannot be found anywhere else. The first ever Moscow MICHELIN Star ceremony took place tonight, at the Zaryadye Concert Hall, in the heart of the Russian capital. The festive evening, organized with all necessary security measures, was attended by more than 500 guests. “ The MICHELIN Guide and Moscow are sharing a historical moment with the unveiling of the MICHELIN Guide Moscow 2022 selection . Inspectors have been particularly seduced by the high-quality local produce. Russia is a wonderfully wide-ranging expression of nature: from sea coasts to wild forests, from aromatic herbs to first-class seafood… There are lots of discoveries to make ” says Gwendal Poullennec, MICHELIN Guide International Director. “ Moreover, thanks to cultural exchanges throughout history between Russia and Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East, gourmets will experience unforgettable authentic meals full of flavor .”

©Artest - Chef's Table

Restaurants were celebrated through the announcement of the MICHELIN Guide selection, with the reveal of Bib Gourmand (for restaurants offering particularly interesting value for money, where you can enjoy a delicious meal under RUB2000), MICHELIN Stars (for restaurants serving high-quality cuisine), and MICHELIN Green Stars (for restaurants that are pioneering in their sustainable approach). As for all its other selections, the MICHELIN Guide has used the same historical methodology. The team of independent and anonymous inspectors from the Guide has been in the field for its traditional table-tests, during which they evaluate the meal they experience via 5 assessment criteria  :

- The quality of the produce used - The mastery of cooking techniques - The mastery of flavors - The chef’s personality in his/her cuisine - The consistency between visits Thanks to the seriousness and depth of their methodology, inspectors were able to collectively build this first MICHELIN Guide Moscow selection.

Disney World Won Its First-Ever Michelin Star for This Upscale Modern American Restaurant

It's a gourmet world after all.

Walt Disney World’s Victoria & Albert’s restaurant , at the theme park’s Grand Floridian Resort, made history last week when it was awarded a Michelin Star.

The fine dining destination is the first and only restaurant owned and operated by a U.S. theme park to hold the prestigious honor, according to Disney Parks Blog . And while most visitors are more likely to associate Walt Disney World with Mickey Mouse rather than Michelin, the team at Victoria & Albert’s is changing that.

The restaurant, just minutes outside the gates of Magic Kingdom, first opened its doors inside Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort in 1988 and since then, it has become an iconic destination for vacationers and locals alike. Last week, it became one of 26 Florida restaurants that have been awarded a star from the Michelin Guide.

But don’t plan to arrive at the restaurant with your Mickey ears. The restaurant has a fairly stringent code, and children under 10 are not permitted. You can select between two multi-course prix-fixe menus, starting at $295 per guest.

The tasting menu, curated by chef de cuisine Matthew Sowers and pastry chef Ally Rogers, showcases modern American food at its finest. The menu is ever-evolving, changing seasonally based on market availability and at the discretion of the culinary team. Diners can expect dishes like a Langoustine Tartelette, a Cinco Jotas Iberico "Eclair," and Miyazaki A-5 Wagyu beef.

“Being recognized by Michelin with a star is an affirmation of excellence. It’s an incredible honor to be the first Disney-owned location recognized by Michelin for the dining experience our team brings to life at Victoria & Albert’s,” Sowers said in a statement. “Everyone on our team earned this star, from our stewards and servers to our culinarians and pastry chefs, and we hope to inspire future generations of culinary professionals to follow their dreams.”

The restaurant also boasts a winning wine list, and guests can opt to add a wine pairing to their meal for an additional $150. It features a collection of more than 500 wines from 35 regions, including selections that go as far back as the early 1900s. Diners can order handcrafted cocktails, zero-proof beverages, and even a selection of waters sourced from around the world.

Veteran sommelier and maître d’hôtel Israel Pérez was also presented with the 2024 Florida Service Award. “Service at Victoria & Albert’s is like a dance — many tiny steps that come naturally after years of dedication,” he said in a statement received by Food & Wine . “Every movement has a purpose and is beautiful when the tempo is perfect. We also pay homage to a past legacy of talented people who have believed in our dream all along.”

Disney enthusiasts with a penchant for fine dining should plan ahead if they’d like to visit the restaurant on their next trip. The restaurant operates under the resort's current 60-day policy, meaning that guests staying at Disney can make reservations for the entire length of their stay up to 60 days in advance of their arrival. New reservation booking windows become available at 6:00 AM daily for select Walt Disney World restaurants.

Monthly recap

The best places to eat and drink in L.A. this month, according to our food writers

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

April showers bring May flowers — at least that’s what Angelenos are hoping for. After two years of record rain , we’re ready for the dry Mediterranean climate our region is known for, along with all of the typical seasonal activities.

That includes home Dodgers games now that baseball season is in full swing. The neighborhoods near Dodger Stadium are filled with long-loved dining destinations like Philippe the Original and Guisado’s, but don’t miss our guide for finding lesser-known food and drink picks , spanning artisanal sake, fresh oysters and a Cypress Park slice shop.

Spring is also prime time for road trips, especially now that the desert festival crowds have departed. If you’re heading out to Palm Springs or as far as Yucca Valley, be sure to keep restaurant critic Bill Addison’s recently published restaurant guide handy.

And if you’re cooking at home, there are several spring cookbooks to aid in those explorations. World Central Kitchen chef José Andrés’ “Zaytinya” cookbook celebrates the connections between dishes pulled from across the Mediterranean and Middle East, with recipes such as a chilled yoghurt soup and buttery shrimp with dill . Closer to home, chef-restaurateurs Sarah Hymanson and Sara Kramer are releasing “Kismet: Bright, Fresh, Vegetable-Loving Recipes.” The cookbook follows a similar ethos as the pair’s L.A. restaurants with casual yet complex dishes that bring the best out in vegetables.

Springtime also invites us to seize the sunlight with midday meals. Weekday lunch is a great way to shake up your work routine and to try a popular restaurant that’s typically booked for dinner — don’t miss our staff guide with some of our favorite lunch menus ranging from prix-fixe power picks to casual taco spots. On weekends, brunch runs this town. Thankfully, we have Addison to guide us toward the best of the best .

Keep reading if you need even more dining ideas this month, including a new Korean restaurant from a Michelin-recognized team, a viral bakery in Koreatown and a soba noodle bar in Culver City.

Saving Money In Costa Rican Restaurants

I t s no secret that my absolute favorite thing to do in Costa Rica is eat traditional Costa Rican food – especially in local restaurants.

Living in Costa Rica expanded my culinary tastes beyond belief (can you believe I never really ate vegetables before living there?!?!?) and I now love to eat a lunch casado with picadillo de chayote and a fresh salad. Talk about vegetables!

Since there is literally a restaurant on every corner, it’s easy to find amazing food in Costa Rica. Although the dollar has stayed relatively strong in Costa Rica (about 600 colones to the dollar at the time of writing), we have found that eating out in Costa Rica restaurants can get expensive if we aren’t careful.

In this post, I’ll go over some of the best money-saving tips I have for Costa Rican restaurants. The best tip? Remember- you can drink the water in Costa Rica so you can order tap water!

Know The Type of Restaurant

There are really 4 different types of restaurants in Costa Rica, and each has a different price structure. Knowing what you are walking in to will help you save money.

Costa Rican Soda

A “soda” is a small restaurant serving traditional Costa Rican food, and sometimes some fast food items such has hamburgers and fries.

A soda can be of two types- one with a buffet and one with a menu. The soda with the buffet is typically even cheaper than a soda with a menu. Both will offer a “ plato ejecutivo ” for lunch- it generally includes the casado of the day and a natural juice drink . This will generally cost around $5.

Costa Rican Restaurant

If you see “restaurante” on the sign, you will pay a bit more. Restaurants tend to have a bit more personalized service- a waiter will come and take your drink orders before your food order.

The “restaurant” prices vary widely, and the best way to know how much you are going to spend is to ask for a menu in advance. If the price is in dollars as opposed to colones then you are going to spend more in general.

You can also check the price of arroz con pollo. It’s on every menu, and the price will give you an idea of how expensive the restaurant is. Between $5-10 is a cheaper restaurant, $10-15 is a midrange restaurant and $20 and above would be expensive.

Know The Terminology

You will often find three different types of plates on Costa Rican restaurant menus: boca, plato medio and plato entero .

A boca is a small plate of food for one person. For example, a boca de chicarrón may contain 1/4 cup of salad, 4 large pork nuggets and 2 pieces of yucca. It’s not uncommon for a hungry person to eat two bocas, and they are a great inexpensive way to try lots of different dishes.

Plato Medio

The plato medio is just a half portion of an entree. (Keep reading).

Plato Entero

A plato entero is the full portion . 9 times out of 10, the plato medio and plato entero are about the same size.

(It’s hilarious to witness two people who have ordered the same dish -one medio and one entero , and then comment for the entire meal about how the plato entero was a rip-off. This happens a lot with the  arroz con pollo. )

Special Diet

Most Costa Rican-style food is naturally gluten-free , but make sure you clarify if you have a gluten intolerance. Given the abundance of fresh fruit , vegetables, white rice , and black beans , it’s very easy to be a vegetarian in Costa Rica, and quite simple to make sure you can follow your vegan diet as well.

Costa Rica Menu

Ask for a menu in Spanish. There are two reasons for this: one is that the English translations, while often hilarious, are many times completely unintelligible (chicken gordon? Yep, they meant chicken Cordon Bleu). You might as well wade through the descriptions with your Spanish dictionary.

The second reason is that many restaurants have “tourist menus” with extremely inflated pricing. The local menu will have the correct pricing, and the price gouging will generally stop once you ask for the regular menu.

Costa Rican Drinks

Order tap water.

After 15 years in Costa Rica, traveling all over, I have never, and I mean never , had problems with the tap water and neither have my kids – that’s because Costa Rica has invested a lot of money in it’s infrastructure, making the water safe .

Bottled water in a restaurant is extremely expensive because locals don’t order it. So skip it, and ask for a vaso de agua del tubo (con hielo) –   a glass of tap water (with ice).

(Clarify this, however, because if you order “agua”  as a tourist, you will often be brought bottled water).

Forget The Refills

Remember there are no drink refills. It’s common for the drink order to be taken, drinks brought, and then a bit later, the food order taken and then the food brought.

(As a side note, many Costa Ricans don’t drink liquids while eating a meal – just before or after!) Either ask for your drinks to come with the meal, or just order water.

Check the menu for “I.V.I.” (impuestos de venta incluidos). This means that the tax and tip are already included in the price listed (tip is a flat 10% gratuity in Costa Rica, regardless of service.)

I.V.I. is generally 18% in Costa Rica, and if this charge isn’t included in the price on the menu, you are looking at an 18% additional charge.

A plate of food that costs 3,500 colones (roughly $7) without IVI listed will actually set you back about 4,200 (roughly $8.40).

Avoid the specials. I know to do this, and I have still be scammed by a charming waiter who sells me a phenomenal special that then costs $40. (I kid you not!) If you are looking to save money, avoid the daily special, or make sure that you have clarified the price well in advance of ordering. This does not apply to the plato ejecutivo as mentioned before.

Pay cash. Costa Rican small businesses and restaurants have begun to pass their credit card bank fees (as high as 8%) on to their customers, and cash is king in Costa Rica . If you have cash, you will avoid this fee, and maybe even get a discount!

Popular Costa Rican Menu Items

Want to know what the best food is to order? Whether it’s a Costa Rican Breakfast , a lunch casado , or a fun happy hour appetizer, these are the best items to order on the menu. Also- since drinking the water isn’t an issue , Costa Rican street food generally isn’t either, so make sure to try some!

  • Arroz con pollo
  • Arroz con camaron
  • Gallo Pinto
  • Caribbean Rice and Beans
  • Sweet Fried Plantain
  • A fun cocktail!

Best Costa Rican Restaurants

Here are some of the lists of our favorite Costa Rican restaurants:

  • San Jose Restaurants
  • San Ramon Restaurants
  • Jaco Restaurants
  • La Fortuna Restaurants

Openings, closures, menu changes and sales mark spring in Oklahoma food and dining

food trip restaurant menu

As ever, Oklahoma food and dining is on the move. New restaurants and menu changes are underway and relaunches of favorite promotions are back for spring.

However, despite recent successes, growth and the celebration of milestones by some local restaurants, the stress of closures continues to ruminate in the Oklahoma food industry.

We've seen a number of local spots, like Stella Modern Italian, The Ambassador Hotel and more announce big plans for concept changes or new leases on additional properties and there is more of that coming in Oklahoma City. However, with the good also comes the heavy — closures, retirements, sales and other forms of attrition. Read on for more of the latest happenings in food and dining for Oklahoma City and beyond.

Downtown OKC hotel opens pet-friendly patio

New Indigenous-owned restaurant creates buzz

If you're willing to make a bit of a drive outside the city and head up to the Osage Reservation, you'll find a new Indigenous-owned restaurant called Saucy Calf , 205 E Main Street, that's generating quite a buzz for a place that's been open for less than a month. The menu is simple, you'll find fry bread, Indian tacos, grape dumplings and a handful of other items being made fresh and served up. You might also spot some one of a kind memorabilia from recent films and television shows decorating the space.

International bakery chain lands in OKC

Oklahoma City is also home to a new store for international bakery chain, TOUS les JOURS , 1841 Belle Isle Blvd., which offers up a wide variety of both sweet and savory baked goods, coffee and other beverage options. One of TOUS les JOURS signature items is its Cloud Cake, a fluffy, homemade sponge cake layered with signature cloud cream and topped with fresh fruit. Stop in to try the cake or one of the bakeries other treats.

Added to the menu

Chicago-style pizza is actually not deep dish. At least not if you go talk to the locals, and that's exactly what Rendezvous Pizza did before bringing their newest pizza style to life. Chicago Tavern-Style thin crust pizza is now available at either of Rendezvous pizza's OKC metro-area locations — 27 E Sheridan Ave. and 14020 N May Ave. —and these pies are delicious. Build your own, or opt for one of the signature pies on the Rendezvous menu — my top three are the fire & honey sopressata, the chi-town chicken rancher and the shredder — and don't forget to ask for the special blend shaker seasoning for on top.

Coolgreens shutters Oklahoma locations

Despite posting to Facebook as recently as April 13, the latest casualty of the restaurant closure cycle is Coolgreens . All of the restaurant's Oklahoma locations — two in the Oklahoma City area and one in Tulsa — are listed as permanently closed and have been removed from the company website. However, there are still active locations listed in Nebraska and Texas.

According to posts in the r/okc subreddit, the closures happened in February, and while there is no definitive explanation for why the Oklahoma locations of the company shuttered, The Oklahoman did confirm that ownership was transferred to a new company called Taste Buds Brands , with attorney Thomas Wolfe, the registered agent for the business on the Oklahoma Secretary of State's website.

Vegan restaurant closes

Another restaurant that closed its doors is Nabati Vegan Kitchen, 7101 Northwest Expressway. The restaurant had its final service day April 27.

While an online post by the restaurant does not give a reason for the closure, it does hint at a takeover of the space already in the works: "We think you'll be happy with who might acquire our space."

Investment opportunities in the restaurant industry

In addition to the closure of Coolgreens and Nabati, two other area restaurants have announced plans for ending operations. However, they are looking for interested buyers so if you've ever considered owning a restaurant, these turn key opportunities could be your chance.

Pinocchio 's, 2627 Classen Blvd. Suite 104 in Norman, owners announced via Facebook recently that they would be forced to close. However the restaurant's Facebook post also said the current owners are hoping that someone will come forward to purchase the restaurant and take over operations.

"This restaurant is now for sale. We're looking for someone with the passion and resources to continue what we've restarted. You would be stepping into a fully operational establishment with a dedicated staff, a strong customer base, and a celebrated reputation," the post stated.

The restaurant stated in the post that it is not currently able to maintain rent and "circumstances demand that we pass the torch to keep the dream alive."

"Time is of the essence, and we are open to considering any fair offer," the statement continues.

Interested parties are asked to contact Pinocchio's owners via text message at 405-589-6425 or by visiting the restaurant for more information.

Additionally, the owners of Jigg's Smokehouse , 22203 N Frontage Road in Clinton, a barbecue restaurant with over 45 years of history, have decided to hang up their hats and head for retirement.

However, rather than just shutting down their beloved Route 66 stop, the owners are hoping someone will but the property and with it their recipes, including the one for their nationally-known beef jerky, which the business ships around 4,000 pounds of to customers annually. Parties interested in Jiggs can contact broker contact Corky Heard with United Country, Heard Auction & Real Estate directly at 580-331-9156 or  [email protected] .

Tama — an adventurous Mediterranean escape opens in Bucktown

As an independent restaurant owner, chef avgeria stapaki says culinary artistry is a core facet of her identity. at tama, she says has the freedom to present her true self on the plate..

Well-traveled Greek chef Avgeria Stapaki faced a challenge in opening her new restaurant, Tama , inside a well-trodden space near Damen and Armitage in Bucktown. Sometimes even with a fresh coat of paint, it’s a still struggle to shake off the specter of a former tenant.

This is not the case at Stapaki’s rollicking new neighborhood restaurant that recently debuted . Though the location, 1952 N. Damen Avenue, previously housed several tasting menu spots (most recently, Michelin-starred Claudia ), it’s now nearly impossible to imagine the locale without Stapaki’s commanding and self-assured presence to helm its wide-open kitchen.

There’s a chef’s counter on the ground floor of Tama restaurant..jpeg

Every inch of space is smartly utilized at Tama, where a chef’s counter complements the dining booths.

CHRIS PETERS

Stapaki and co-owner Adalberto Olaez (Lao Peng You, Boeufhaus) met while working side-by-side as executive chef and chef de cuisine, respectively, in 2022 to open Nisos, a lavish and much-hyped Mediterranean restaurant from the owners of Hampton Social. However, owner Brad Parker — who recruited Stapaki from her native Greece — felt Fulton Market diners didn’t respond to his chef’s ambition and closed the restaurant in spring 2023, safely rebranding as a steakhouse. Olaez followed Stapaki and would ultimately partner with her, opening Tama without investors or corporate backers.

The beetroot salad (goat cheese, arugula, pistachio) at Tama restaurant. | Chris Peters

The beetroot salad (goat cheese, arugula, pistachio) at Tama restaurant.

It’s been more than four years since Stapaki left her home in Greece to open Nisos, and while that journey didn’t unfold in the way she expected, she’s not sorry that she chose this path. Throughout the peaks and valleys of this era, Stapaki has found a path forward — one she attributes to her own culture that’s immortalized in the restaurant’s name, which refers to a votive offering used in Eastern Orthodox Churches.

“[As] Greeks, we make a tama when we want something to happen, so I went to church and made a tama,” she says.

Culinary artistry is a core facet of her identity, and at Tama, she says has the freedom to present her true self on the plate.

“I feel like myself again as a chef and artist — I consider myself an artist,” she told Eater in January . “I was working as a fashion photographer before I became a chef... I changed careers to follow cooking because cooking is an art that never ends. I’m always learning something.”

Tama’s opening lineup of dishes is unlike any other Mediterranean spot in Chicago, and includes a zippy yuzu tuna tartare, a playful spin on Greek avgolemono styled to resemble ramen (it includes crispy chicken and firm egg noodles made on-site), and springy shrimp with bok choy and fennel.

The cocktail list also brings a similar energy with options like a sesame-laden Formerly Japanese (brandy, calamansi, almond).

The space sports an unusual footprint and every square inch is put to use, from front-row counter seats just feet away from the kitchen to a lively bar area in the back, all the way up to an intimate dining room on the second floor. In a remarkable transformation, Moroccan red-orange and dark blue hues lend a cozy feel to the once-Spartan interior. That shift was intentional, as Stapaki said.

“People want real food, people want to be happy, people want to be comfortable,” she says. “My past was always in fine dining restaurants, so I know [how to do that] very well. But I want to create an environment for everyone.”

Enrique Olvera Heads to Brooklyn With Esse Taco

Sammy’s Roumanian Steakhouse returns after an extended Covid closure, Mission Chinese pops up at Cha Kee and more restaurant news.

A platter of four plates of single tacos, with a red and orange drink and chips and guacamole on the side.

By Florence Fabricant

Tacos as street food — if your street is Park Avenue — is Enrique Olvera’s approach at his new Brooklyn spot, his first for the borough; he owns it with Santiago Pérez, the chief executive of Casamata hospitality group. Mr. Olvera, the chef and restaurateur known for Pujol in Mexico City and Cosme and Atla in Manhattan, here offers tortillas made on the premises with heirloom corn stuffed with juicy rib-eye, pork loin and grilled chicken in slices, not chopped up, and smoked oyster mushrooms. Included are salsas and a mix of onions, scallions and cilantro. The standing-only setting has stainless-steel barrels as tables, and the kitchen is open to view. (Opens Thursday)

Sammy’s Roumanian Steakhouse

This New York original, closed since 2021 because of Covid, has been revived at a new address to again beckon devotees of a boisterous room, pitchers of schmaltz and charred skirt steaks (“Roumanian tenderloin”) that drape off the plate. The in-house tummler, Dani Luv , will again entertain. The New York Times restaurant critic Mimi Sheraton gave it two stars in 1978, but did not live to judge the 2.0 . It’s open Fridays and Saturdays in May, and will go full time in June.

Mission Chinese

Danny Bowien has taken up residence in Cha Kee, a Chinatown restaurant, with much of his original Mission Chinese menu from 2010 in San Francisco, and a few new items. “I’m just so excited to be back in the kitchen,” he said in an email. The pop-up is Wednesdays through Sundays, starting at 5 p.m., until the fall. Expect the hits: Chongqing chicken wings, kung pao pastrami and mapo tofu.

The 160-year-old Parisian pastry shop and restaurant group, best known for its filled macarons, has expanded its New York footprint with a cafe in Hudson Yards. The Bronze Owl

A long list of mostly Italian snacks like cheeses, cured meats, toasts, meatballs, gnocchi fritti and grilled pizzas accompany the drinks, also leaning Italian, at this cocktail destination from David Rabin, Franklin Becker and Stephen Loffredo. It shares space in the historic Martinique hotel with the Press Club Grill. The name pays homage to owl sculptures in nearby Greeley Square Park; more owls, marking the location of the old New York Herald building , can be found in Herald Square. (Friday)

White asparagus.

It’s asparagus time — notably white this spring. Fat ivory spears come with sauce or garnish, often egg as at Faun , in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, or called mimosa at Essential by Christophe , in Manhattan. In her lovely new cookbook, “Niçoise,” Rosa Jackson writes: “the sprinkling of grated or sieved hard boiled egg, whose yolk recalls the bright yellow mimosas that bloom all along the French Riviera.” You’ll find white asparagus at many Manhattan restaurants, including Koloman , Sempre Oggi , Café Chelsea , Wallsé and Ernesto’s . At the Grand Tier , Aquavit and Café d’Anvers , they’re soup, and Cafe Katja serves an entire menu of them.

Chain restaurants like Chili's are coming for fast-food giants in the latest bout of the value wars

  • As fast-food prices increase, customers are finding more value in chain restaurants.
  • Chains like Chili's are rolling out deals and portion sizes that could best fast-food chains.
  • Chili's new Big Smasher burger is the latest offensive move in the value wars.

Insider Today

At Chili's Dallas headquarters, I watched as a staffer dressed in Boyz II Men-themed Chili's merchandise glided through the company's spacious lobby while carrying an oversized margarita. It wasn't even 11 a.m.

This, apparently, was the place where everyone lived, ate, and breathed Chili's , and it was the first sign I was in for a memorable experience inside where its menu items are born.

The second sign was a half-pound burger smashed down, topped with lettuce, crunchy pickles, and a creamy Thousand Island dressing.

The Big Smasher burger, Chili's newest menu item, was served in the company's test kitchen before its official launch on April 29. At the company's invitation, I had traveled 1,500 miles from New York to try this burger and other new menu items in development. With the first bite, I knew it was worth the turbulent four-hour flight.

As the cheese-covered meat, tangy sauce, and freshly buttered bun hit my taste buds, I thought: This was a burger good enough to take on the Big Mac — but would it best it in a head-to-head competition?

It feels like Chili's is open to answering that question as fast-food restaurant prices rise. And if the sheer size and taste of the Chili's burger are anything to go by, it has a shot at beating fast-food chains in the value wars.

Competitive pricing and generous portions at restaurants could spell trouble for fast-food chains

Fast food has long been considered the cheapest way to dine out, but that may no longer be the case.

In New York City, a McDonald's Big Mac meal, including a medium-size order of fries and a medium drink, costs $13.89, excluding tax. (McDonald's told BI that local franchisees set pricing, which varies by restaurant.) Similarly, a Burger King Whopper meal combo costs $13.99, excluding tax.

Chain restaurants are using promotional deals to get people through the doors, such as Chili's "3 For Me" combo that allows customers to order an entrée like a burger, a side of fries, an appetizer , and a bottomless drink for $10.99. Customers also have the option to upgrade their drink and appetizer for an additional $3.99 each.

The chain argues that, based on size, Chili's burgers are a better value than those at a fast-food restaurant. All Chili's burgers weigh a half-pound versus the 3.2-ounce pre-cooked patty weight of a Big Mac.

It's not just Chili's offering discounted combo meals.

Applebee's "2 for $25" meal deal includes two entrées and the choice of an appetizer or two side salads, while Red Lobster's "Shrimp Your Way" gives customers the choice of three shrimp dishes for $25 or two for $21.

Unsurprisingly, the meal deals are popular. In January, Restaurant Business News reported the percentage of Chili's orders that included a promotional deal like the "3 For Me" or margarita of the month rose to 31%, up two points from the previous quarter.

After Applebee's added steak to its "2 for $25" deal in June, John Peyton, CEO of the chain's operator Dine Brands, said the percentage of Applebee's customers ordering limited-time-only or value offerings grew from 15% to 19% quarter over quarter, Nation's Restaurant News reported.

Outback Steakhouse also recently brought back its limited-time-only Steak & Lobster deal, which starts at $19.99. It includes a 6-ounce sirloin steak, lobster tail, and two sides. The chain announced the rerelease of the deal in a simple Instagram post: "Back by popular demand."

Fast-food chains are hiking prices and making customers mad

Fast-food establishments typically raise prices by about 2% each year. Still, McDonald's chief financial officer Ian Borden told analysts at the UBS Global Consumer and Retail Conference in March that the chain raised US prices by around 10% in 2022 and 2023, blaming inflation.

Despite the price increase , last year's sales remained steady. McDonald's reported that comparable year-over-year sales increased 8.7% in 2023.

However, 2024 has brought even more price hikes for customers. The recent implementation of California's $20 minimum wage for employees in limited-service restaurants has led to across-the-board increases in menu prices throughout the state.

Still, squeezed franchise owners know there's a limit to what customers are willing to spend.

Related stories

"We have looked at price, although I can't charge $20 for a Happy Meal," Scott Rodrick, a McDonald's franchise owner who operates 18 restaurants in California, told CNN . "My customers' appetite to absorb menu-board prices is not unlimited."

In a February earnings report, McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said the chain had declining visits, and customers earning $45,000 a year or less were spending less.

"We certainly know consumers are more wary — and weary — of pricing and we're going to continue to be consumer-led in our pricing decisions as we look forward to 2024," Borden said on a February earnings call, CBS News reported.

Customers have also taken to social media to bemoan the increases.

"Outback can do Steak and Lobster for $19.99, but McDonald's can't keep their prices in check. The death of fast food is upon us," one Reddit user commented.

A McDonald's spokesperson told Business Insider in a statement that the chain "always strives to strike the right balance of value for money" when asked to comment on competing with casual-dining chains to attract value-driven customers.

Chain restaurants are coming out swinging with new products similar to fast-food favorites

Chili's Big Smasher burger is the latest example of how chain restaurants are following fast-food chains' playbooks by delivering what customers love while offering better value amid price increases.

The burger costs $12.99 but comes down to $10.99 when part of the chain's "3 For Me" meal combo.

"We've always had incredible burgers on our menu, but for about a year now, we've been hearing more and more frustration from fast-food fans over rising costs," Chili's director of culinary, Brian Paquette, told Business Insider, adding that it's one of the reasons the chain wanted to deliver "some of the favorite drive-thru flavors" on its menu.

When Paquette described the Big Smasher during my visit to Chili's headquarters, I noticed its similarities with McDonald's Big Mac, which I've eaten many times. Both burgers include shredded lettuce, onions, pickles, American cheese, and a Thousand-Island-style dressing.

It's a comparison Chili's is leaning into.

In a press release, Chili's said the new burger has "flavors fast food lovers will recognize." And a new ad released by the chain takes direct aim at McDonald's most famous burger, saying their iteration is better than "a tiny drive-thru burger" while showing their "3 For Me" combo next to a lone Big Mac.

Chili's half-pound burger — "twice the meat of a Big Mac," Paquette said — is made using a hand smasher, and the patty is seasoned with a spice blend on both sides.

The result, which is both juicy and crispy, was far better than any fast-food burger I've had recently, thanks to its size and the quality of the toppings. It tasted like a gourmet restaurant burger, as opposed to a fast-food joint burger speedily thrown together.

Leaning into meal deals can win over customers, but chains can risk cutting their prices too much

Promotional deals, while popular among customers, can threaten chains' profits if they're not sustainable.

Earlier in April, Bloomberg reported seafood chain Red Lobster is considering filing for bankruptcy after a blundered roll-out of its signature all-you-can-eat deal.

Red Lobster's " Ultimate Endless Shrimp " deal, which has run for over 18 years, offered unlimited shrimp dishes for $20. Initially a one-day-a-week deal, it became a daily promotion last summer to attract more customers. In 2023, Red Lobster raised the price twice, eventually landing at $25 to cope with demand and improve profits.

Despite the increased price, the all-you-can-eat strategy backfired. Operating losses of $11 million and $12.5 million were reported in the quarters following the daily endless shrimp promotion launch in 2023. By 2024, the deal is only available on Mondays.

Chili's executives are aware of the dangers of using discounted meal deals to attract customers. Felix said there was a focus on discounting to drive people into restaurants in years past, but Chili's recently made strategic shifts to pull back on discounts and avoid training the chain's customers to rely on them.

"You're seeing a lot of kind of desperate value plays out there that might work in the short term, but you're paying for the traffic and the gains you're seeing versus doing it in a sustainable way," he continued.

Felix told BI that while the "3 For Me" promotion wasn't designed to compete with fast food, he agreed it could do just that.

"Fast food and drive-thru prices have gone up," he said. "I think that's just the start of the conversation, and the sticker shock is real."
