To say that Charlie Wilson is an “Icon,” does not truly describe the musical powerhouse whose vocal prowess began as founding member and lead singer of the legendary GAP Band (“You Dropped the Bomb on Me,” “Outstanding,” “Party Train,” and “Burn Rubber on Me.”)
As a solo artist Wilson has topped the R&B charts with 13 number one singles, garnered 13 GRAMMY® nominations, is a New York Times and Washington Post best-selling memoir, “I Am Charlie Wilson,” received a BET Lifetime Achievement Award, a Soul Train Icon Award, a Soul Train Certified Soul Award, and a NAACP Music Makes a Difference Award. He was also honored with a star on the Black Music & Entertainment Walk Of Fame in 2022 and will be receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2024.
Wilson kicked off 2022 on the critically acclaimed The Culture Tour with New Edition and Jodeci. He has previously sold out two of his own headlining arena tours- Forever Charlie (2015), In It To Win It (2017) – and toured with Bruno Mars on his 24K Magic tour.
He was twice named Billboard’s Top Adult Male R&B Artist (2009, 2020) and named Billboard’s Top Adult R&B Male Artist with the most #1s in three decades.
Known to the younger generation as “Uncle Charlie,” the lovable nickname given by Snoop Dogg, continues to be one of the most sought-after voices in music today. He has collaborated with many chart-topping artists including Bruno Mars, Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, Tyler The Creator and Nas, to name a few.
In the years between the GAP Band and his solo success, Wilson survived drug and alcohol addiction, homelessness and prostate cancer. Sober now for 28 years, the singer says, “I wouldn’t have believed I’d be where I am right now. That’s why I shout every night because I thank God for allowing me to be here.”

Charlie Wilson Concert Schedule The Gap Band alumnus and adult contemporary R&B superstar Charlie Wilson has been dazzling audiences and listeners with his sultry vocals since the takeoff of his solo career in the early 2000s. Charlie Wilson's tour dates feature an electrifying energy more akin to a tight-knit party than a sold-out concert, as seen in his 2017 In It To Win It Tour, his 2015 Forever Charlie Tour and his 2013 Love, Charlie Tour, among many others. Wilson is known for his smooth funk & soul singing style, which, combined with his talents as a songwriter, producer and keyboardist, has led to the creation of numerous R&B hits over his eight solo studio albums. On stage, Charlie puts on a show with an unmatched level of energy. He beckons crowds to take to their feet and feel the music as his band delivers with tightly composed rhythms and he serenades with his dulcet melodies. In addition to praise from fellow performers, Charlie Wilson's music has earned him 11 Grammy Award nominations, six NAACP Image Award nominations (along with one win for Outstanding Album), and numerous honors from BET, Billboard and Soul Train, along with acknowledgements from across the music industry and beyond. Charlie Wilson Background Charlie Wilson was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1953. The son of a Christian minister, he learned to play piano and sing in church, providing the musical background that led to the formation of The Gap Band with his brothers Ronnie and Robert. After the group announced their retirement in 2010, Charlie shifted his focus to concentrate on his solo career, becoming Billboard Magazine's No. 1 Adult R&B Artist and a breakout success. Wilson's first solo album, Bridging The Gap, came in 2000, earning him acclaim from the single "Without You." His follow-up release, Charlie, Last Name Wilson, went certified gold and produced the eponymous single (along with fellow R&B vocalist R. Kelly) by which he is most often known. In subsequent years, Charlie Wilson continued to release and chart on the Billboard Hot 200 and R&B/Hip-Hop charts and sold more than 1 million copies of his albums. Wilson has inspired generations of performers who also feature him on their own records. He was given the affectionate nickname "Uncle Charlie" by Snoop Dogg and collaborated with the rapper (and Justin Timberlake) on the 2013 track "Signs.

Wasn't it.
He wasn't here he look like he was in pain and not feeling well. Trying to get through the show.
Awesome performer.
It was one of the best Charlie Wilson concert that I've seen, and I have been to around 8 of his concerts.
Best concert performance
Loved the new venue and Mr Charlie Wilson put on a great show but didn’t personally care for Johnny Gill; he was doing too much, actually was over doing it.
Charlie Wilson was amazing as always. Johnny Gill was wonderful, he’s a real performer
It was worth it!
No bad seat at The Venue! However, I would recommend ear plugs just incase. Sound system was definitely bringing it! I love Mr. Wilson! It was an all energetic good vibe of people who like to dance and have a good time!!
Excellent Experience
I had so much fun, Uncle Charlie sounds Amazing, Johnny Gil sounded Amazing, it was a show to reminisce, it was a show for the lovers. Fantastic 😍!!!
His name is Charlie last name Wilson & we love him
Charlie Wilson performance was spectacular. He has a beautiful voice and amazing energy. He gets a 10 Venue is amazing also
EXCELLENT SHOW
Another outstanding concert at The Venue. I am most appreciative of the sound staff for lowering the volume of the performing acts which I had mentioned in the past was to loud and the only negative issue I had with The Venue. Sound is at the perfect level now. Thanks
Disappointed
I have been to every Charlie Wilson concert in northern Ca . I was disappointed his normal dancers were not there with their energy . Everyone was tired 🥱 on stage . I love Uncle Charlie and will continue to listen to his music and support . Concert was very different
Great R&B Music
My concert list is getting shorter and shorter, seeing Mr. Wilson this past weekend check him off my list. The Gap Band is one of my favorite groups, hear him singing one of the best song ever. Overall venue I had a great time

THE G-GAP BAND
EXPERIENCE THE G-GAP BAND
Dance party rock and roll from the 60's, 70's and 80's
A Musical Journey
"Great music!", "You guys are awesome!", "Sang ALL my favorite songs!", "Makes me want to dance like the good old days!", "Love it!", and "These guys are dynamite!" are some of the phrases to describe the G-Gap Band.
The G-Gap Band is a Dance Party Rock and Roll Band that plays the best hits of the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Now entering their 17th year, the band is based out of the greater Columbus, Ohio area.
Over the years, the band has played many venues including restaurants/pubs, private parties, festivals, charity events, country clubs, and corporate events. The G-Gap Band was selected as the featured entertainment for the "Rosie Reds" 50th Anniversary Formal Gala at Great American Ball Park's Riverfront Club. The Rosie Reds are the official Cincinnati Red's fan club. After the event, the Rosie's wrote, "Thank you for performing at our 50th Anniversary Gala, You all truly made it spectacular!"
Behind the Music
The band consists of five multi-talented musicians who enjoy having fun and interacting with their audience. Members of the band are Scott Wilson (lead vocals, guitar), Don Mead (lead guitar, back-up vocals), Beau Barrington (bass guitar, back-up vocals),. John Zab (percussion, back-up vocals) and Marty Skidmore (rhythm guitar, keyboard, back-up vocals).
For booking inquiries, please contact band member, Marty Skidmore, at (513) 519-4419 or [email protected] .
SCOTT WILSON
Lead vocalist, guitar
Scott is the band's lead singer and brings a great deal of energy to the stage. He has the unique ability to adapt his vocals to an array of songs and puts his soul into each one of them. Scott enjoys a variety of music from different genres. Some of his favorites are southern rock, Chuck Berry- style rhythm and blues and outlaw country. Scott started singing and playing the guitar at the young age of eight!
Beau Barrington
Bass guitar, vocals
Beau brings a wealth of experience as he began playing professionally in the mid 60's. Beau credits Dave Holly for his tutorship and feels Pete Cetera, the bass player for Chicago, is his biggest influence. Of course, the Beatles, Cream and Jimi Hendrix were also large influences. Beau and the band's lead singer, Scott Tonedeaf Wilson, were bandmates in a previous band after he moved from Montana to Ohio in 2017.
Lead guitar, back-up vocals
Don is the lead guitar player and back-up vocalist for the band. His driving leads add that special extra to the band's overall sound. Don began playing the guitar after seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. A long-time, talented musician, Don began playing in rock bands in junior and senior high school, later becoming involved in contemporary Christian music praise and worship bands.
Percussion, back-up vocals
John has been playing music for over 50 years starting in grade school in Buffalo, N.Y. He attended Berklee College of Music in the 70's and moved to Columbus in the 80's where he has been actively playing drums and keyboards for local blues, oldies, classic rock and R & B bands including Zen Blues Band, Flytown Soul Review, Black Light Poster and Franklin Xpress. He energetically provides authentic sounds and beats of the original songs to help create memories from all the good times you remember.
MARTY SKIDMORE
Rhythm guitar, keyboard, back-up vocals
The lone, remaining founding member of the G-Gap Band is Marty Skidmore. He plays rhythm guitar, keyboard and is a backup vocalist. He enjoys interacting with his audience and has even been known to go out and mingle/dance with them during the song! He and his bandmate, Don Mead, were classmates growing up in Geneva, Ohio. Marty began playing the guitar at a very young age and recalls playing ballads with his father, who was also a guitarist. His musical influences include many of the great Motown groups, the Beach Boys and the Beatles

The 25 Concert Tours You Can’t Afford to Miss This Summer
From the stones to j. lo, pearl jam, journey, foo fighters and robert plant, it’s all about big shows and big stars. grab your tickets now.
Edna Gundersen,
After a massive slump during COVID , the concert industry is again sh-boom, sh-booming! The gross for the top 100 North American tours in 2023 reached $6.63 billion, up 39.5 percent over 2022, with attendance nearly doubling, to 15,008 per show, according to Pollstar.
And this year is shaping up to be another box office blowout. Despite the national outrage over price spikes for eggs, airfare and gas , music lovers seem immune to ticket shock. Ticket prices climbed 22 percent last year, to an average of $135.88, compared to $111.49 in 2022. And the trend is pointing skyward.
Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour and Beyonce’s “Renaissance World” tour ranked first and second last year, but boomer acts remain the tour circuit’s lucrative and reliable summer tentpole, delivering packed arenas and sheds year after year as fans flock to relish the oldies and rekindle the past.
Here are the acts to catch this sunny season.
Heart (April 20–May 24, Aug. 10–Nov. 22)
Sisters Ann Wilson, 73, and Nancy Wilson, 70, haven’t released an album since 2016’s Beautiful Broken , but they have decades of hits, including “Magic Man,” “Barracuda,” “These Dreams” and “Alone,” to draw from on their “Royal Flush” tour . Cheap Trick opens.
Kenny Chesney (April 20–Aug. 23)
After hitting arenas last year, country star Chesney, 56, has booked 18 stadiums for shows with openers including the Zac Brown Band, Megan Moroney and Uncle Kracker, his duet partner on chart-topper “When the Sun Goes Down.” All but one of the shows are on Saturdays.
Billy Joel (April 26–Nov. 9)
The Piano Man, 74, has scheduled only 13 dates , four of them at New York’s Madison Square Garden, so ticket stampedes are likely. Fans are curious to know if “Turn the Lights Back On,” Joel’s first single in 17 years, will be added to his hit-heavy repertoire.
$20 off a Walmart+ annual membership
The Rolling Stones (April 28–July 17)
Mick Jagger , 80, Keith Richards, 80, Ron Wood, 76, and company continue their global “Hackney Diamonds” tour , named after last year’s highly praised album , the group’s first batch of originals since 2005’s A Bigger Bang . Expect Diamonds cuts and lots of hits.
Stevie Nicks (May 3–June 21)
Between Fleetwood Mac’s songbook and her own solo catalog, singer-songwriter Nicks, 75, has a huge well of material to draw from as she extends a tour that started in February. She’s been performing crowd favorites “Landslide,” “Dreams,” “Rhiannon” and “Edge of Seventeen” as well as Tom Petty hits in honor of her late friend.
George Strait (May 4–July 20, Dec. 7)
A touring juggernaut, honky-tonk country singer-songwriter Strait, 71, resumes the record-breaking stadium tour he kicked off in 2023. He’s joined by Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town. The King of Country serves up “his own Eras tour, leading a well-curated, decades-spanning set of songs,” according to Billboard .

The S.O.S. Band (formed in 1977) is a notoriously groovy American R&B and electro-funk group from Atlanta, Georgia, in the U.S.
Originally known as Santa Monica, the S.O.S. (sounds of success) Band formed of members Willie “Sonny” Killebrew on saxophone, Billy Ellis on flute, Jason Bryant on the keyboard, Bruno Speight on guitar, John Simpson on bass, James Earl Jones III on drums and Mary Davis on vocals. The band would perform regularly and recorded a series of demos, one of which was heard by Tabu Records who signed the group to their first recording contract.
In 1980 S.O.S. Band released their first hit single “Take Your Time (Do It Right)” written and produced by Sigidi Abdullah and Harold Clayton. The single went platinum, reached No. 1 in the R&B chart, staying there for five weeks, and debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. The debut album “S.O.S.” also performed remarkably well selling over 800,000 copies and reaching No. 2 in the R&B album chart.
The band subsequently toured and welcomed the multi-instrumentalist Abdul Ra’oof to the line-up, whose recording debut with the band came on their sophomore album “Too” in 1981. S.O.S. Band’s third studio release entitled “S.O.S. Band III” came in 1982 with support from producer Terry Lewis.
After these modest successes, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis took over the production reigns for LP number four titled “On the Rise”. The album became certified gold as did its successor “Just the Way You Like It” which featured the No. 6 R&B single of the same name. The tide began to turn for the S.O.S. Band with their sixth studio album “Sands of Time” which despite reaching No. 4 in the R&B chart was the last of a string of their distinctive house music releases that made popular the Roland TR-808 drum machine.
Mary Davis announced her departure from the band in 1987 to pursue a solo career, however the band continued-on a released the albums “Diamonds in the Raw” (1989) and “One of Many Night” (1991). In 1994 Davis reunited with Abdul Ra’oof and Jason Bryant in a new band in the hopes of recreating some of the same funky sounds.
Live reviews
‘People always talkin’ bout, Your reputation, I don’t care about your other girls, Just be good to me’…what a classic R&B disco track from the 80s. It’s a track that brings back a lot of nostalgia for me and I think everyone at the S.O.S Band’s concert. Although the band have been around since the late 70s, their performances today are still just as knock out as they were back in the day. Changing the line up of bands usually takes away the original spark and chemistry that they had, but for S.O.S, their alteration of artists seems to bring new life and energy to the group.
They came on stage and took their positions behind their respective instruments, and launched straight into High Hopes, before introducing themselves and having a chat with the audience. It was great to hear from them about what they’d been doing in recent years, and how their new track Just Get Ready came about. When they played it, they taught the crowd a small section of the chorus, and got us all to sing along which was cool. It was pretty special to be one of the first audiences to hear the track live.
They really hit the balance of new and old tracks, playing all the hits from their albums, and the number one singles which everyone was loving. The energy and stage presence they gave off was still incredible, and you could tell that they were loving every moment of their performance. Hopefully they’ll keep writing and performing, because there’s definitely still potential for great music to come.

SOS are an American, Atlanta born, R&B and electro funk band that have been going strong since 1977. The Georgian group have achieved moderate success over the many years that they have been in fruition, building up a legion of fans over the decades. The crowd was indeed packed full of nostalgic middle aged funk veterans who had clearly come to reminisce, as well as families and even quite a few young people. It seems that funk will never die, and SOS’s music will always remain popular in that brilliant 80s fashion of resurgence. The groovy hits that SOS smashed out in the day are now ‘hipster’. Young and old were grooving away to hits such as the eponymously titled ‘SOS’, ‘What’s Wrong with our Love Affair’ and ‘Take Your Time’. Despite decades together, the band were still full of energy and passion for the music they were performing and this translated into the crowd. People were singing along, shouting out choruses and dancing to the grooves. It was a wonderfully nostalgic night all round.
Nice to see them back in Amsterdam after almost 26 years. Groovin', that's what we were doing. A nice packed Paradiso with all SOS Band lovers I'm sure. All the known grooves came bye and despite some unfunky song transitions and not too well tuned voice and sound balance, it was awesome. The synthbass in combination with Mary Davis' stunning voice is still nothing but the best, the finest, just the way I like it and even when you sleep I'm telling you no lies. Hopefully they will not take their time to come back to PLAAAYYYY in Amsterdam again.
The S.O.S. Band was in pure form last Thursday night at THE BIRCHMERE! I felt like I had travelled through a time warp and landed in the 1980's, in a night club, and I was jammin' as I did over three decades ago! The S.O.S. Band's performance of "Just Be Good To Me" and of "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" had the audience singing and dancing like We were all young again in Our 20's & 30's. "THANK YOU", S.O.S. Band for the youthful rejuvenation!
My first time seeing one of my favorite groups they were REALLY GOOD the ladies were on point especially the one with the yellow boots. The band and the other groups all did well. Lets keep the old school coming that's the real music. This new music doesn't have any backbone in it.
Great performance. Sound and show as good like old days. I only missed a bass player. Next time they should bring one with their next tour. And performance must be 100% live and not partly with tape.I'll be there, if they do our country again, The Netherlands.
SOS Band was incredible as always... Last Night Toyota Arena in Ontario... Funk Festival... They Turn it Out!!...Soul Great!!... Dance steps on point!!..Especially Abdul Raa’oof I Love You!!.. Such an Great Dancer!!... Yes you still got it Babe!!...
The SOS Band was incredible! Loved their performance...sound as good as ever!! I sang my heart out! SOS took me back many years! Wish they would’ve performed more songs in the Funk N LA concert since they closed the show. Recommend them 100%
The SOS Band sounds the same as I remember in my '20s, great. The Band has not lost a step and the songs bring back great memories. Please bring them back again.
The SOS band has not lost their touch. I had a wonderful time. They still sound the same as as if they in the studio. I will go see them anytime they are concert

‘The working class can’t afford it’: the shocking truth about the money bands make on tour
As Taylor Swift tops $1bn in tour revenue, musicians playing smaller venues are facing pitiful fees and frequent losses. Should the state step in to save our live music scene?
W hen you see a band playing to thousands of fans in a sun-drenched festival field, signing a record deal with a major label or playing endlessly from the airwaves, it’s easy to conjure an image of success that comes with some serious cash to boot – particularly when Taylor Swift has broken $1bn in revenue for her current Eras tour. But looks can be deceiving. “I don’t blame the public for seeing a band playing to 2,000 people and thinking they’re minted,” says artist manager Dan Potts. “But the reality is quite different.”
Post-Covid there has been significant focus on grassroots music venues as they struggle to stay open. There’s been less focus on the actual ability of artists to tour these venues. David Martin, chief executive officer of the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC), says we’re in a “cost-of-touring crisis”. Pretty much every cost attached to touring – van hire, crew, travel, accommodation, food and drink – has gone up, while fees and audiences often have not. “[Playing] live is becoming financially unsustainable for many artists,” he says. “Artists are seeing [playing] live as a loss leader now. That’s if they can even afford to make it work in the first place.”
Potts, who works at Red Light Management – home to everyone from Sabrina Carpenter to Kaiser Chiefs and Sofia Kourtesis – feels like there is an industry equivalent of the Spider-Man meme in which they are all pointing to one another. “People who work at labels think bands make loads of money touring, while booking agents think they make loads of money on publishing and so on,” he says. “Everyone thinks artists make money from the other side of the industry they’re not involved in.
“Artists are the biggest employers in the industry. They pay for the tour manager, session musicians, agent, manager, crew, insurance, travel, accommodation, equipment, rehearsal space, production. Everything. I don’t think people know this is all the stuff that the artist pays for and does.”
“Greater transparency is needed,” says Lily Fontaine, lead singer of Leeds band English Teacher. On paper, the four-piece appear to have made it. They are signed with a major label, Island, have played on Later With … Jools Holland, get healthy BBC Radio 6Music airplay, their debut album has received five-star reviews and they are about to embark on their biggest tour to date, which includes an 800-capacity home-town show.
“The reality is that it’s normal for all of these achievements to coexist alongside being on Universal Credit, living at home or sofa surfing,” says Fontaine. During the making of their debut album, she and bandmate Lewis Whiting did the latter while unable to afford rent.
In their four years of existence, English Teacher have yet to turn a profit from touring. “We’ve never directly paid ourselves from a gig,” says Whiting. “A headline tour usually comes out with a deficit. The only thing that we ever make any kind of profit on is festivals, because the fees can be higher, but any money left over just goes towards the next outgoings.” A successful show for the group in the past has been defined by whether they can flog enough merch to afford a supermarket food shop.
So how do they survive? “In the world of artists, we’re in a lucky position,” says Whiting. “We try to pay ourselves £500 a month each from the band pot.” However, they’ve been reliant on their advance for this, which is now gone. “We’re now in that stage where we’re gonna have to figure out where that £500 a month is gonna come from,” says Fontaine. “Because the gig fees won’t be able to cover that.” The band estimate that their 16-date UK tour in May will generate roughly £800 profit. But, says Fontaine, “realistically, I don’t think there will be any profit because things always go over budget”.
For many artists, fees aren’t increasing in line with costs. “There’s been no real incline at all,” says Potts. “For support slots, I don’t think the fees have changed in the last 10 years or so that I’ve been managing, whether that’s £50 at the smaller end or £500 quid for some of the biggest shows.” Fees for headline shows can vary enormously for bands, even on the same tour. Playing a 200-capacity club in Newcastle may land you £600, while a 1,500 cap in London may net you £3,000.
And fewer people are coming to shows at the small-to-mid-sized end of things. “In our audience data, we see there is a gap in new audiences coming through post-pandemic,” says the FAC’s Martin. “As well as a bit of a drop-off in some of the older audiences returning to live shows.” However, despite stagnant fees and shrinking audiences, touring activity in the UK is at a peak. Due to the costs of touring Europe (which can be thousands in taxes and carnet alone) 74% fewer UK bands are now touring Europe post-Brexit. “It’s much more difficult to tour in Europe so there are more artists trying to perform domestically,” says Martin. “That creates a saturation problem.”
For this article, the Guardian has seen 12 tour budget sheets for various bands and artists varying from up-and-comers to firmly established and successful acts, all of whom regularly undertake headline tours across the UK in venues ranging from 150 to 2,500 capacity. Almost all of these result in losses. Understandably, most shared their balance sheets on the condition of anonymity. One four-piece indie band, whose last two albums went Top 10 in the UK charts, reported a loss of £2,885 from a six-day UK tour. The only tour that shows anything resembling healthy profit was a 29-date tour for a solo artist who came away with £6,550. Not bad going for a month’s work but, as Martin points out, “that’s then his touring done for the next six months. So it’s not enough money.”
Nubiyan Twist are a nine-piece Afro-jazz outfit who have a loyal following and tens of millions of streams on Spotify, “We pride ourselves on being able to put on a big show, like your Fela Kutis or James Browns, these epic spectacles,” says bandleader Tom Excell. “But it’s getting more difficult, without a shadow of a doubt.” For an upcoming eight-show tour of Europe, they are predicting a loss of £4,931.28. The only way they can justify doing it is because they got funding from the BPI Music Export Growth Scheme. “I would have just pulled the plug if it wasn’t for that,” says Excell. “I’ve got a two-year-old and I can’t be away from home for that long and come back with a loss.”
Even when the band get more lucrative fees for festivals it’s still tough. They will be paid £5,000 for a festival performance this summer but the total profit after band wages (as Excell pays all his band members in full first) expenses and commissions are paid out will be £277.60. “After four albums and 15 years doing this, to still be having to gamble on whether I’m going to make anything, while everyone else gets paid a guaranteed amount, is a struggle,” admits Excell.
Such thin margins leave little wiggle room, as the space-surf band Japanese Television (who headline 100-300 capacity venues) found out when their booking agent reduced their 13-date UK and EU tour to eight shows with a five-day gap in the middle that will add a further loss of around £1,200 to a tour that is already set to lose them around £700. “Records and T-shirts are basically what keeps us going,” says the band’s Tim Jones. “The only way this tour is working for us is because we just put out our second album and we did about 60 presales on the vinyl and that was basically enough to pay for the van. It’s a hobby that just about pays for itself.”
after newsletter promotion
The question is: who else will be able to afford to pursue music as a hobby? “It depresses me how many middle and upper class people there are in the music industry,” says manager Potts. “Because the working class just can’t afford to fork out £150 a day for van hire. The only artists doing that are people who have deeper pockets and can afford to take the hit.”
Of course, every act is different in terms of what they justify as reasonable outgoings and not everyone has the same costs, but Potts says from his experience, generally speaking, bands with four or five members now need to be playing 2,000+ capacity venues nationwide to “really start to see things tip”. That tipping point is out of reach for the majority. “Most people don’t actually get to that level,” Potts says. “Just look back at any festival lineup from 10-20 years ago and see which names are still on festival bills and how many you’re like: what happened to them?”
The gap between those who are flying and those who are floundering has become even more stark. “It feels like the top 1% have become the top 0.5%,” says Martin. “The level of artists we’re talking about here that are struggling to make things stack up financially would really surprise people.”
In 2022, the Grammy-winning Pakistani singer Arooj Aftab posted on X: “Touring has been amazing. We headlined a ton, had massive turnouts and have proven ourselves in all the markets. Yet still, running tens of thousands in debt from the tour and I’m being told that it’s ‘normal’. Why is this normal? This should not be normalised.”
I’m told that one US artist – who released one of the most critically acclaimed albums of 2023, which went Top 10 and placed very highly on numerous year-end polls and was nominated for a major award – worked out that the only way she could make her UK tour work was by sub-letting her home.
It’s a far cry from Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras jaunt. “The very high end of the live industry is reporting record profits,” says Martin. “You can’t have a healthy music ecosystem where at one end you’ve got people going ‘we’ve made more money than we’ve ever made’ and at the other end you’ve got relatively successful artists that are sofa-surfing while signed to a major label.”
Is there an answer? “When you’re touring Europe, you realise how much state funding in the arts there is,” says Excell. “It really needs more state funding and support from the top down.”
Martin echoes this. “The government needs to start looking at spending money on the music industry as an investment rather than as a cost,” he says. “But you also need to support a sector in a time of crisis. And this is a time of crisis.”
