Nestled in the heart of Abbotsbury village near Chesil Beach in Dorset, Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens is a true gem. These stunning gardens date back to 1762, and boast a rare collection of exotic plants from all corners of the globe, from magnolias to camellias and more!

Stroll along meandering pathways discovering enchanting features such as woodland glades, tranquil lakes, and the Victorian Fernery. The Subtropical Gardens also offer breathtaking views of the Jurassic Coast, providing an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages. This is one of my personal favourite gardens to visit in Dorset – every time I visit I always seem to discover something new!

Immerse Yourself in Literary History in the gardens surrounding Thomas Hardy’s Cottage – just outside the county town of Dorchester . Tucked away amidst woodland in the Dorset countryside, Thomas Hardy’s Cottage Garden is a hidden treasure, offering a delightful escape into the author’s early years and the inspiration that fueled his renowned works.

Spread across approximately 1/3 acre, this charming garden is meticulously designed, featuring winding paths, vibrant cottage flowers, and even a thriving vegetable patch.  A visit to the Thomas Hardy Cottage Garden is best combined with a tour of the cottage, where you can further immerse yourself in the author’s life and works.

The Blue Pool Nature Reserve & Tearooms , part of the historic Furzebrook Estate, has a rich history dating back nearly 400 years. The Tearooms, established in 1935, have been welcoming visitors for almost a century.

The renowned colour-changing phenomenon of the Blue Pool’s waters adds to its historical and scientific significance, now designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Whilst it’s not a garden in a traditional sense, it is surrounded by heaps of British fauna, as well as rhododendrons and azaleas.

Nestled in the scenic Dorset countryside, Cranborne Manor Gardens offers a delightful oasis surrounding the ancient Cranborne Manor House.

Designed by Alfred Cart de Lafontaine in 1891, the formal gardens at Athelhampton House boast four Elizabethan-style Ham stone courts, complete with ponds and a charming canal.

This idyllic walled Victorian garden had been left wild and untouched for over four decades until its rediscovery in 2019. Since then, Careys Secret Garden has undergone extensive restoration with a strong emphasis on regeneration, rewilding, permaculture, and sustainability.

Visitors are invited to explore the various sections of the garden, including the Arid Garden, Rose Garden, Food Forest, Veggie Patches and more. The garden also collaborates with the local restaurant, the Salt Pig, which serves refreshments and vegetarian dishes from the Victorian potato store on-site.

Surrounding a historic 12th-century Abbey, this garden is hailed as one of Britain’s finest and offers a breathtaking experience throughout the seasons. With a rich history dating back almost 900 years, Forde Abbey Gardens has evolved over time and showcases a captivating array of flora.

From enchanting displays of snowdrops and crocuses in February to vibrant daffodils and tulips in spring, the garden transforms with each passing season. Don’t miss the impressive canal pond, home to diverse wildlife, and the highest-powered fountain in England!

Minterne Garden , nestled in the serene Dorset countryside, is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Spanning 20 acres, these gardens offer a tranquil escape in nature. Many of the plants found here were collected by adventurous plant hunters who explored the world between 1850 and 1950. There is plenty to see with each season, from magnolias to charming ducks on the small lakes and cascades.

The historic estate at Sherborne Castle boasts 42 acres of picturesque English Landscape Gardens, offering a serene environment to wander and enjoy the breathtaking views. Embark on walks around the serene lake, where you’ll encounter notable garden features such as Raleigh’s Seat, The Cascade, and the newly constructed Fossil House.

No matter the season, the gardens delight with vibrant displays, from spring’s carpet of colourful bulbs to the dazzling hues of autumn reflected in the tranquil lake.

Nestled in an acre of meticulously landscaped gardens, enjoy an array of attractions for the whole family at Corfe Castle Model Village . From Giant Games, a Croquet lawn, an enchanting Enchanted fairy garden, and a Wildlife garden. Exploring these magnificent grounds makes for the perfect day out in Dorset.

This exceptional garden located on the renowned Jurassic Coast is managed by the third generation of a dedicated family. Bennetts Water Gardens occupies an expansive eight-acre expanse featuring serene lakes and an internationally acclaimed collection of lilies.

Central to the gardens is a picturesque Monet-inspired bridge. Prepare to be amazed as you witness a mesmerizing display of thousands of water lilies of 300 distinct varieties.

One of my personal favourite gardens to visit in Dorset is Moreton Walled Gardens in the tiny village of Moreton, near Dorchester. This beautiful five-acre landscaped formal garden has a sculpture trail, a picnic area, and a small play park. There are also some farm animals to discover such as pigs, ferrets, and free-roaming chickens. Plus there’s a small plant shop where you can buy some really lovely garden decor and locally-grown plants.

The on-site Dovecote Cafe is absolutely lovely and does amazing cakes – don’t miss it! They’re an   Employ My Ability employer, giving students with learning disabilities and Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) work experience to help them develop vital skills, expertise and confidence.

Exbury Gardens & Steam Railway is a magnificent combination of woodland, herbaceous, contemporary, and formal gardens. Although Exbury is actually just over the border in Hampshire, these stunning gardens are well worth the short trip from Dorset.

Nestled in a distinctive riverside setting, this enchanting site has exquisite gardens adorned with vibrant flowers. Theres also a steam railway that weaves through the grounds. The gardens also feature a restaurant, play area and much more for all the family to enjoy.

With plenty of different gardens to visit in Dorset, you can see something different during every season of the year. From spotting the snowdrops at the beginning of the year, to the daffodils and bluebells in Spring time. As Summer takes over with the begonias and geraniums, to the changing of the trees in the Autumn. There will always be something slightly different to see in the Dorset gardens with the changing of the seasons.

Why not make a day of it with a lovely stroll followed by a bite to eat in the cafes and bistros that feature in many of these gardens listed below.

Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens

Buller’s Way, Abbotsbury, Weymouth DT3 4LA

Open every day between 10am – 5pm, you can enjoy beautiful strolls through the gardens with history dating back to the 1700’s when a kitchen garden was created to provide fresh produce for the family living in the Abbotsbury castle.

These gardens in Dorset have grown over the years and coupled with the castle being demolished, storms and restorations, today you can see a mix of formal and informal flowers. 

The Victorian garden showcases it’s famous Rhododendron and Hydrangea collections.

Dogs are welcome on leads around the gardens and inside and outside the coffee shop.

Athelhampton House And Gardens

Athelhampton Rd, Puddletown, Dorchester DT2 7LG

You can visit the  Grade I Listed garden in Dorset. Expect to see plenty of fountains, walled gardens which showcase the world- famous topiary pyramids. 

You can also expect to find a visitor centre with a restaurant, tea room, gift shop and plant sales area. 

The gardens are open seasonally with time changes through the year, but well worth a vist when in the area.

Bennetts Water Gardens

Putton Lane, Chickerell, Weymouth, Dorset, DT3 4AF

Bennetts Water Gardens in Weymouth are home to 8 acres showcasing wetland plants, trees, palms and water lilies to name a few.

The water lilies planted by the Bennett family in 1959 were supplied to Claude Monet for his garden in France. 

Admission prices to the gardens and the museum on site are currently £11.50 adults, £5 children.

Careys Secret Garden

Left wild and untamed for over 40 years, the secret walled garden at Carey in Wareham, Dorset is now open to the public for the very first time! Hidden amongst the beautiful rolling hills of the Isle of Purbeck, Careys Secret Garden has been lovingly and sensitively restored by the small gardening team into a tranquil and inspirational space.

Visit and discover the rose garden, orchard, stumpery, food forest, arid and herb gardens, veg patch, and children’s imaginative play areas. The Secret Salt Pig cafe serves up delicious locally sourced food and drink, the cakes are divine and the coffee is excellent!

Visits to Careys Secret Garden are by booking only, and full directions will be provided with your booking confirmation. The garden is open to visitors each Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Compton Acres Gardens

164 Canford Cliffs, Poole, Dorset, BH13 7ES

Whilst Compton Acres is a privately owned garden in Dorset, visitors are still welcome. Visit the Italian gardens, Wooded Valley, Rock and Water gardens, Heather garden and the Japanese garden.

Additional facilities include the plant shop, cafe and tea rooms with bakery and a gift shop. Dogs are welcome in the gardens on a short lead.

Cranborne Manor Gardens

The gardens in Cranborne surround the Manor House in the village. You can visit the gardens on Wednesdays between March and October. Access to Cranborne Manor Gardens is via Cranborne Garden Centre in the village.

Dogs are welcome on leads in the gardens and the garden centre.

Gardens At Holme

West Holme, Wareham, BH20 6AQ 

There are plenty of amazing scents, colours and wildlife to be found in the gardens at Holme in Wareham. The garden is made up of distinct areas which are separated by hedges and areas of taller planting. The gardens are open between March and October, with a one off entrance fee of £6 or a season pass for £20.

Whilst you’re visiting don’t forget to check out the farm shop , cafe and garden centre . The gardens are also dog friendly with dogs kept on leads.

Keyneston Mill

Tarrant Keyneston, Blandford Forum DT11 9HZ

Discover this Dorset botanical garden in the 50 acre private estate in Blandford Forum. See the flowers that are harvested to create unusual perfumes.

Additional services and facilities include a gift shop and Bistro to enjoy refreshments.

Kingston Lacy 

Kingston Lacy, Wimborne BH21 4EA

Part of the National Trust , you can visit Kingston Lacy gardens without entering the house if you choose. 

Visit Lime Walk, the Fernery, Nursery Wood, or the popular Japanese garden. There are plenty of different flowers and shrubs to discover.

Some of the gardens are dog friendly if you’re taking your dog with you. Dogs are also very welcome in the stable restaurant in a section which makes it the perfect excuse for a hot chocolate on a cold day or a jacket potato for lunch.

Knoll Gardens

Stapehill Rd, Hampreston, Wimborne BH21 7ND

Knoll Gardens offer a naturalistic garden, a haven for both people and wildlife to enjoy. Discover the winding paths, ornamental grasses and tall perennials. There is free parking and self service refreshments available. The majority of the gardens are also wheel chair accessible with a helper.

Langmoor and Lister Gardens

Langmoore and Lister Gardens are seafront gardens to visit near Lyme Regis Dorset offering some of the best views across Lyme Bay.

Enjoy a stroll through the woodland walks, sculpture trail, and plenty of grassed areas to enjoy a rest or picnic.

There is also a mini adventure golf course, table tennis and putting course to enjoy.

Lawsbrook Garden

Shillingston, DT11 0TE

Lawsbrook Garden, part of the National Gardens Scheme is open by appointment only on varying days throughout the year. Why not combine a visit during January and February to see the snowdrops.

Mapperton House & Gardens

Beaminster DT8 3NR

There are 15 acres of gardens to discover at Mapperton House and Gardens. It’s a popular place to see snowdrops that can be found in the arboretum alongside other Spring flowers that start to appear at the same time.

Entry is chargeable to Mapperton House and Gardens, and currently pre booking is required for tickets.

Minterne Gardens

Dorchester DT2 7AU

Minterne has around a mile of garden to discover and enjoy. With a vast collection of Himalayan Rhododendrons and Azaleas, you can also discover rare trees. As you wander you will discover lots of lakes, waterfalls and streams. Also one of the many dog friendly days out in Dorset . In the Spring time, Minterne Gardens are a great place to see bluebells.

Sherborne Castle And Gardens

New Rd, Sherborne DT9 5NR

The gardens at Sherborne Castle are an English Landscape garden. Famously worked in by Capability Brown, with an exhibition dedicated to his works at Sherborne also available to view.

There are 42 acres of garden for you to enjoy and discover with colours changing with the seasons. The gardens are open between April and October each year. There are discounts available if you’re visiting the castle and gardens together.

Great Garden Escapes: Dorset

Garden escapes make for some of the best adventures. Explore some of the most exquisite gardens in picturesque Dorset.

Iconic views, historic coastline and literary inspiration await in peaceful Dorset. Garden escapes abound here too, whether it’s to Mapperton, home to the Earl and Countess of Sandwich, or the country garden surrounding Thomas Hardy’s Cottage in care of the National Trust.

If there is one view for which Dorset is known, it is Gold Hill, a steep, cobbled street in Shaftesbury with a 14th century church at the top. It is so ageless, so quintessentially English, that it starred in a classic television advert for a loaf of Hovis bread, with parts of Dvorak’s New World Symphony used as the soundtrack.

In truth, Dorset, one of the country’s quietest and most unsung counties, is crammed with views. Of unknown age, the Cerne Giant above Cerne Abbas is a nude male figure carved into a hillside outside Dorchester. On the coast near Lulworth, the distinctive limestone arch of Durdle Door extends into the Channel. At its base is a pebble and shingle beach where you may spot the fossils that give this 95-mile stretch of shore the name Jurassic Coast.

The county has long been a retreat for writers, designers and artists, and often serves as a location in novels, from Hardy’s Far From the Madding Crowd to Ian McEwan’s On Chesil Beach . John Fowles’ The French Lieutenant’s Woman is set in Lyme Regis, where holidaymakers paddle in waters protected by the long, curved harbour wall known as the Cobb,  a recurring feature in the novel.  Lyme Regis is also the setting of Tracey Chevalier’s Remarkable Creatures , the story of the life of Mary Anning , fossil collector. 

Gardens to visit

Close to Dorchester, Hardy’s Cottage , has a country garden surrounding the author’s former home. Like nearby Kingston Lacy and Sherborne Castle,  it is also in the care of the National Trust

Knoll Gardens near Wimborne is worth visiting for the range of superb grasses it sells. Set against a mini-arboretum of unusual trees and shrubs, this secluded naturalistic garden is home to the UK’s leading ornamental grass specialist, Neil Lucas, and an award-winning nursery. The grasses create stunning year-round displays, clearly demonstrating the versatility and drama that grasses can bring to any garden. Alongside the grasses, you’ll find an increasing range of native plants and perennials coming together in glorious drifts of colour. Other highlights include the gravel garden, bark circle and dragon garden showcased in its naturalistic garden.

The mild climate here is a boon for gardeners. Near Beaminster, Mapperton , the home of the Earl and Countess of Sandwich, is an award-winning garden set in a steep-sided valley.

The gardens at Forde Abbey have evolved over 900 years. Once the property of Cistercian monks, Forde Abbey has been the home of the Roper family for over 100 years. Alice (Roper) and Julian Kennard are its current custodians. Find exuberant borders close to the house, and a new bulb labyrinth and wildflower meadow further away.

The former home of Sir Walter Raleigh and with grounds landscaped by Capability Brown, Sherborne Castle makes a worthwhile visit. It dates from the 12th century, although the current house was updated between 1856 and 1859.

Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens is a magnificent 20-acre garden, which dates back to 1765, and is filled with rare and exotic plants from all over the world. Many of these plants were first introductions to this country, discovered by the plant-hunting descendants of the garden’s founder, the first Countess of Ilchester. World-famous for its camellia groves and magnolias, the garden is a mixture of formal and informal flowers and has earned acclaim in Dorset for its rhododendron and hydrangea collections and the charming Victorian garden.

The Japanese Garden is one of five distinctly beautiful gardens at Compton Acres . In the 1920s the original owner visited Kyoto, Japan and was inspired to bring back experts and authentic artefacts to create one of the UK’s most enduring Japanese gardens.

STAY   Summer Lodge Country House is set in Evershot, erstwhile home of Thomas Hardy, and was partly designed by the author himself – Hardy was also an architect. The hotel’s rooms are sumptuous, as is to be expected of a member of the Relais & Châteaux Group, and offer sublime escape.

DINE  Louise Chidey and Cass Titcombe are two of many Londoners to have made their way down to Dorset. In Beaminster they bring their well-honed skills to Brassica Restaurant , an intimate establishment that works with local suppliers, farmers and smallholdings and sources 85 per cent of its ingredients from within a 15-mile radius. Their shop, Brassica Mercantile , offers a range of pieces for the considered home.

Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens

This microclimatic English garden by the seashore is protected by belts of evergreen oak. The garden is a haven for unusual tender species, and features an interesting plant centre. Visit in spring for its camellias and magnolias, and in high summer for its hydrangeas and diverse tender perennials .

Bennetts Water Gardens

This water garden is home to the National Plant Collection of water lilies, displayed across a patchwork of ponds and lakes.

Forde Abbey, Dorset

The award-winning gardens of Forde Abbey have the highest-powered fountain in the country, shooting skywards 160 feet. The Great Pond is the only monastic structure that remains in the garden. Water cascades from this down to the Canal and Mermaid Ponds then into the Long Pond.

Elsewhere in the gardens you'll find topiary , an arboretum, bog garden and swathes of tulips in spring.

Kingston Lacy

Kingston Lacy is an opulent family home built to resemble a Venetian Palace. Visitors can enjoy a picnic on the south lawn, wander through the Japanese Garden and Kitchen Garden, then explore the vast 8,500 acres of estate.

For children there are two new play areas at Kingston Lacy, and they host outdoor theatre productions in summer.

Sculpture By The Lakes

These 26 acres of botanical gardens are a tranquil place to reflect and while away the long slow hours. Enjoy 30 permanent sculptures by acclaimed artist Simon Gudgeon, unpack a picnic by the water or treat yourself to a ‘field to plate’ lunch in the cafe. Because of deep and fast flowing water, the gardens have a 'no children under 14 (including babies) and no dogs' policy.

Abbey Farm Flowers

A spectacular setting for a cutting garden – in the grounds of a medieval abbey on the Jurassic Coast. They've recently added more beds for a more diverse mix of shrubs , annuals and perennials. The garden welcomes hen and birthday parties as well as general visitors for pick your own sessions, and they can arrange workshops, such as hand-tied bouquet making. Tea, cakes and ice creams are available to fuel your flower picking.

Knoll Gardens

To understand the diversity of any group of plants, you need to find a place where you come away feeling more educated and competent in the cultivation of that group. For grasses this place is Knoll Gardens in Dorset. Neil Lucas and his team have developed a fantastic range of grasses and honed methods of cultivation so that the rest of us can more easily use them in different environments. Brothers Farm

Originally growers of blueberries, brothers Dan and Josh Benson started growing flowers in 2018. Minterne Gardens, Dorchester

Dorset is one of the most populous counties in which to find Historic Houses and gardens, and in this article, we’re going to take you on a curated tour of five of these fabulous places which you might want to consider for when you next visit the region.

Arriving and staying in Dorset

Sherborne Castle & Gardens

Once you’ve enjoyed breakfast at the Eastbury Hotel, it’s time to set off for your first garden visit. If you’re feeling fit and the weather’s nice, Sherborne Castle & Gardens is 0.8 miles, or a twenty minute walk, from the hotel. You can also drive there in three minutes.

Built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594 and home of the Digby family since 1617 at Sherborne Castle, you can see magnificent staterooms and nationally important collections of art, furniture & porcelain. The gardens are rather spectacular, and here you can view a Capability Brown exhibition and Sir Walter Raleigh’s kitchen in the Castle cellars.

The Orangery at Sherborne Castle

Visitors can explore acres of gardens surrounding a fifty-acre lake with spectacular views, colourful herbaceous borders, champion trees and sweeping vistas.

Once you’ve enjoyed spending time at Sherborne, it’s time to enjoy some lunch. If you’ve walked to Sherborne, it would be best to walk back to The Eastbury Hotel, to enjoy their lunch offer , served between midday and 2pm. You can view a selection of menus on their website. Alternatively, if you’ve driven to Sherborne, the castle also recommend enjoying lunch The Elms: Farmhouse Kitchen , aslo in Sherborne. Both options offer an easy route to your afternoon stop, Minterne Gardens.

Minterne Gardens

Minterne Gardens are a seventeen minute drive south from The Eastbury Hotel down the A532. A historic house in an unequalled setting, Minterne House and gardens is a unique family estate.

There, you can visit the unique Himalayan gardens and wander ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’ through Minterne’s wild woodland gardens and let the tranquility provide that perfect antidote to life’s stresses.

While the house itself isn’t open to the public, being a family home, the gardens there really are stunning. After the long winter, Minterne Garden is preparing for new growth. Gone are the autumn leaves the colour of toast. Gone is the autumn sun as yellow as a young chick and in their place is the promise of the spring.

Minterne Gardens close at 6pm, leaving you easily enough time to enjoy the gardens and then set off back up for dinner at your hotel.

Athelhampton House & Gardens

You’ve a busy day ahead of you, so make sure you don’t get up too late and have breakfast, as you’ll need to be at Athelhampton House & Gardens from 10am (when they open) to start exploring their gardens.

Athelhampton House & Gardens is in Dorchester, about a thirty four minute drive south from The Eastbury, passing Minterne Gardens en route. Athelhampton is one of England’s finest Tudor Manor Houses. The Great Hall, the heart of the House was built in 1485, when it would have served as the entire accommodation.

The West Wing was added in the 16th Centuty as the house become domesticated, with further additions over the centuries, and with its linenfold paneling, ancient heraldic stained glass & minstrels gallery, The Great Hall is a fine example of Tudor architecture.

Athelhampton is home to glorious award winning Grade 1 listed gardens. Dating from 1891, the Inigo Thomas designed gardens are full of architectural vistas. The walled gardens include the 12 world famous topiary yew pyramids, Ham Stone courts, ponds and fountains, with the River Piddle leading you around to the C15th Dovecote.

The Kitchen Garden began it’s 10 year restoration in 2014 and is being restored to it’s former glory with fruit trees, vines, herb borders and vegetable beds to provide produce for the restaurants, the Kitchen Garden will continue to evolve over the next few years.

The Eastbury Hotel to Athelhampton House & Gardens

Your next stop will be Mapperton Gardens, and with two sites still to visit, it’s best you enjoy lunch at The Coach House Cafe at Mapperton.

Mapperton House & Gardens

Mapperton is a forty one minute drive west of Athelhampton Gardens, in Beaminster. Just follow the A356 westwards and you’ll soon see the signs to visit Mapperton.

The 2020 Historic Houses Garden of the Year winner (as voted for by the general public) Mapperton is the home of the Earl and Countess of Sandwich. The family moved here from Hinchingbrooke House, near Huntingdon, in the 1950s, bringing with it the family collection.

Mapperton House itself was also voted ‘The Nations Finest Manor House’ by Country Life and was principal location of 2015 film ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’.

Mapperton is a glorious Jacobean manor overlooking a 15 acre Italianate garden, with orangery, topiary and borders, descending ponds and arboretum. The house has outstanding views of Dorset hills and woodlands.

Forde Abbey & Gardens

If you feel you still have the energy and time to make a final stop, it’s certainly worth rounding off your tour with a trip to Forde Abbey . Thirty minutes west of Mapperton, Forde Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery dating back to the early 12th century.

It was converted into a palatial family home during the mid 17th century. The house has exquisitely ornate plaster ceilings throughout the state rooms, together with collection of tapestries woven from cartoons drawn by Raphael for the Sistine Chapel, it is a unique family house.

Throughout the 20th century the 30 acres of gardens that surround this unique house have been transformed by the present owners. The gardens are now a diverse and breathtaking landscape fit for the house that they surround, from the productive Kitchen Garden, to the Arboretum, Rock Garden, Herbaceous Borders, Bog Garden, and Woodland Garden.

Mapperton Gardens to Forde Abbey

And so concludes your Great Garden Trail of Dorset. The Eastbury Hotel is a 47 minute drive from Forde Abbey, via Yeovil. Or if you’re looking for accommodation a little closer to the Abbey, there are options in Chard.

Great gardens in Dorset to visit in spring

Dorset's many delights are enjoyable in all seasons but when spring arrives, we can truly appreciate our county's beauty. What's more as a region of walkers, a day out at a beautiful garden (more often than not with a café stop) is just what the doctor ordered.

One of the best ways to do this is to head out and about into one of the area's many beautiful gardens and open spaces, which attract visitors from far and wide. Dorset has many - from tidy historic gems at cottages, to huge landscaped spaces with formal flourishes.

Below, we run through seven of the best options for taking a tour of a garden as the days get warmer. Whether you're after flowers, finery or fun for the family, we've covered all the bases.

Kingston Lacy

The National Trust look after Kingston Lacy, which has all a visitor could want in terms of outdoor space.

As the trust's website explains: "Wander through the Japanese Garden to the Kitchen Garden, where Queen Victoria once sent her own gardeners for inspiration. Or explore the vast 8,500 acres of estate, featuring Iron Age hill forts, colourful heathland, water meadows and the world’s oldest pedigree herd of Red Ruby Devon cattle."

With the weather due to warm up, kids will also enjoy the play areas on offer. While adults and youngsters alike will find joy on the south lawn, looking back towards the majestic house, especially when the sun shines.

If pretty landscaped gardens are more your thing, explore the finery nearer the house. The Japanese garden is a particular highlight.

The property's past also makes for fascinating reading. William John Bankes was forced into exile in Italy because of his homosexuality. While living in Venice, he oversaw the renovations of the house from afar.

Hardy's Cottage

Where better to get a flavour of Dorset as the temperatures climb up than where Thomas Hardy was born? The author put the Blackmore Vale on the map with his stories and poetry glorifying the area's natural beauty. Like Kingston Lacy, Hardy's Cottage is also a National Trust property. You will find it in Higher Brockhampton, near Dorchester.

When the garden is in full bloom, it looks just as you would expect a typical cottage garden to look on a picture postcard. As the National Trust website says: "The garden reflects most people's idea of a typical cottage garden, with roses around the door, and the sound of birdsong, even in winter."

The cottage nestles next to Thorncombe Woods, adding to its picturesque location. And when you tire of the gardens and the history of Hardy's former home, it's the perfect place to explore as spring brings the woods to life. The National Trust has information online about visiting.

Athelhampton House and Gardens

Athelhampton is a Tudor manor, often used to host school groups from across Dorset, learning about Henry VIII and other fascinating figures from Tudor times. Its gardens are well worth exploring too in the right weather.

Alfred Cart De Lafontaine bought the mansion in 1890, becoming one of its many owners throughout its history. He employed Francis Inigo Thomas to create the architectural gardens that we see today. Robert Cooke MP, who took over ownership years later in 1966, also improved the gardens, adding to the framework established in the 1890s. In 1972 an octagonal pond was installed, finishing off the outdoor space.

Twenty years later, in 1992, Patrick Cooke inherited Athelhampton. He set about restoring the house, but also the gardens, so their finery did not diminish as the years went by. But if the history isn't enough of a draw, how about Liz H's glowing TripAdvisor review from February 2022? The Winchester visitor to Dorset wrote: "Even on a drab February day the gardens are clearly impressive and we look forward to seeing them in full colour."

Sherborne Castle

If you're the sort of garden lover who appreciates a famous designer, head to Sherborne Castle in west Dorset. Here you can see a Grade I listed garden, which was the vision of Capability Brown. These days the name is well known but it was one of Brown's first ever commissions. There are formal gardens close to the main house, as well as vast spaces with trees, sculpted views and a lake.

Two different walking routes are available to explore the grounds. The entire space is geared towards making the most of spectacular views of Sherborne Old Castle - which was left in ruins by the English Civil War.

The stories of the old castle should entertain the kids, as well as all the space to run around. The romance of the spectacular views should soothe older minds.

Read more about the gardens online. Don't get confused by the two castles - the old one is just ruins, run by English Heritage, while Sherborne Castle is a stately home with the vast grounds to explore. They sit next to each other but have separate entrances.

Stock Gaylard

Another country house with spectacular surroundings is Stock Gaylard, not far from Sturminster Newton . It's a Grade II* home, believed to have been built in around 1714. But anyone passing by the area will notice the grounds first and foremost. The house is reached via a sweeping drive off of the A3030.

Beyond the fence from the road drivers can see deer roaming the area, along with glorious trees and the house itself tucked away in the distance. Locals often try to guess the coming weather based on where the deer are on the estate. The Oak Fair, in August, is a great time to visit. But the estate will start looking beautiful in spring for sure.

The estate's website describes the garden with the following passage: "The house faces East and overlooks the Deer Park. In front is an expanse of gravel leading onto a small lawn that has a central path with an iron gate leading through a fence out to the Deer Park. Surrounding this lawn is a low stone wall, probably built at the time of the renovations to the church in 1884.

"Where the garden begins there is an ornamental iron gate with a cattle grid to its side. The church lies to the South of this area. The garden is made up of a series of lawn areas with box hedging, herbaceous borders and mature trees. To the North is the Dovecote."

Kingston Maurward

There's a lot going on at Kingston Maurward. There is a working agricultural college on the site, as well as an animal park - an added attraction for the little ones. But if you're after an impressive garden stroll, Kingston Maurward can offer a lake, canals and temples. You'll also get the usual classic formal hedges and fantastic flowers.

As the website explains: "The lovely 35-acre formal gardens were created by the Hanburys between 1915 and 1922 within the existing framework of an eighteenth-century Capability Brown style parkland setting and the vestiges of a Victorian garden."

There are so many gardens to explore here - from the Red Garden in an Italian Renaissance style, to more Japanese gardens like Kingston Lacy, as well as terraces, a temple with a view, a walled garden and a secret garden. Better yet, the gardens are free admission at the moment, according to the website.

Upton Country Park

Upton Country Park is another entry on our list with plenty of space in the wider grounds, perfect for a walk or to let the children run wild when the weather warms up. There's even a play park for them to enjoy.

But for the botanists, there's an impressive walled garden to take in, too. The website describes the garden as: "A beautifully landscaped Walled Garden with well managed beds & borders, and plenty of open space to enjoy a family picnic, time with friends, or simply soaking up some sun. The Tea Rooms terrace overlooks the Walled Garden.

"The garden is open daily 9am – 6pm, unless booked out for a wedding or other private event."

There's also a splash fountain, perfect for heatwaves. And the front lawn is where ball games are allowed. Why not relax in the walled garden after taking a bike ride through the wider grounds?
