Worked great!

We tow our Ford Focus behind out motorhome on a tow dolly and it is a royal PITA!! I've got the procedure down, and can do it fairly quickly, but there is no getting around having to crawl around up under the towed vehicle... and on a warm sunny day it is annoying... and on a cold rainy day it is downright miserable! We are going to switch vehicles shortly... to something with a manual transmission that can be flat towed without having to do anything more than connecting (an adustable) tow bar.

Towing AWD van?
- Add to quote
I am wondering whether an AWD can be towed with either axle on the ground. My guess would be that it can be done with the front axle on the ground. Any thoughts?
always tow AWD vehicles on a flat bed. never tow with just 2 wheel on the ground. it will damage your transfer case and i think the diffs also.
Okay, thanks! I was hoping it wouldn't hurt it since the front is on-demand.
I have towed them with two wheels on the ground. They have to be running and in neutral. I would rather have a flatbed but the car was for the engine anyway. I would say do not do it unless on a flatbed
i believe it was in 1999 that they went to an on demand system, my 98 astro if a full time system. mine was MFG March 98.
My buddy has towed his Van with a tow dolly a few times. We just put the front tires up on the tow dolly and pulled the rear driveshaft out to prevent any damage. Worked great!
Flat deck or dollies is the only way in a breakdown situation unless picked up from the front with the rear drive shaft removed. Is yours a SLT or SLE? Not relevant but just wondering.

This new forum posting really sucks. Are your tires winter ready? Are they each inflated to 35psi? I have not driven my van lately and had to move it around the block in heavy snow. It went sideways because one front tire was at 15psi.
Presumably, but I will check that out... Thanks!

GaryZ said: As for the front wheels pulling, I had to re-train myself when I sold my Bronco II 4WD and bought the Astro AWD. The Bronco II is standard 50x50 drive where the Astro is 30x70. I found that if I was timid with the throttle the front wheels would not engage more than 30% and the van reacted very much like a 2WD. With practice I learned to to let the rear wheels come around somewhat and then get heavier on the throttle to force power to the front wheels. It works for me! Click to expand...
I just step on the gas in the 97, if it slips I feel the power transfer and it just goes  But I have the viscus fluid T case, so it might respond differently then the electronic system.

Tow with front wheels on dolly / wheel lift with rear axle pulled or flatbed ! ONLY OPTIONS !

Actually, in my case, I got lucky. The fuel pump had developed a bad spot in the motor, ergo, sometimes it would not run when the engine was started, causing a no start condition, but as long as the pump powered on with the ignition, it would start and run fine. Thankfully, did not have to tow, it went to the shop under its own power and is now doing what it's supposed to be doing... Runs smoother than it did before around town, but still have this annoying skip at highway speeds over 60 at a steady cruise.... Thinking distributor or ignition module at this point, though the plugs and wires could be bad... they have around 30,000 taxi miles on them, which is the equivalent of 80,000 ordinary miles... Learned something I did not know, the 70/30 thing... not sure I'm happy with that... seems it's only meant to get you going, nothing more.

70/30? It sure doesn't feel like that. I can mash the gas at 50mph in a couple inches of snow and I go straight ahead without any issues. Whatever it is it works awesome!
Bigger number to the rear....30/70 then if thats what it is. I thought it was more 40/60, but I have no idea. Only time mine has ever gotten sideways was on ice and really slick snowy covered roads when I smash it from a dead stop. I can't even break the tires loose in gravel as I have tried it like 20 times with no luck.
It's 70 rear, with a 20% transfer of power it's not an eye opener when it happens. I can feel mine transfer power but it's more of a in the seat of your pants feeling. Don't think I've every mashed the throttle at that speed in the slop. I've hammered the throttle on a number of Typoons and Syclones, a lot of Eagle Talons and some Conquest and at 40-50 MPH on dry pavement and to only thing you feel is them just hunker down and go.
Ya the lack on tires breaking loose is definatly just the lack of power to weight ratio in these Vans. Mash the trottle in slop with a Typhoon once....
The way it was explained to me(by a very experienced transmission guy), was that when it senses any slippage, it goes from 70/30 to 50/50. Functionally, I never sensed any difference between my '93 and my '00. But I do love getting all 4 spinning in the snow.
