Are you planning a trip to Victoria Falls? Here are the essential Victoria Falls tips plus everything you need to know before you visit this incredible landmark.

Located in the middle of the Zambezi river and at the border of both Zimbabwe and Zambia, Victoria falls is one of the seven natural wonders of the world that is high on every traveler’s bucket list .

I mean every adventure traveler would one day want to see the biggest curtains of falling water at the Victoria Falls.

Though it may not be the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world, it is classified as the largest waterfall with a height of 108 meters (354 ft) and a width of 1,708 meters (5,604 ft). Now that’s something you’d want to see at least once in a lifetime.

But before you travel to the storm that thunders, there are a few essential Victoria falls tips you should know to make sure that you plan you’re trip very well.

So as you plan your trip to Victoria Falls, here are the best tips you need to know for an amazing time.

Victoria Falls tips to know to help you plan your trip

victoria falls tips and guides

1. Best time to visit Victoria falls

Though Victoria falls is a year-long destination, not every time of the year is perfect to visit depending on what you want to do. You should know that the water levels of the falls change as the season changes.

If you want to see the falls at their highest capacity with the mist so high and the sound so thunderous, you might want to visit from February to May. The only downside of visiting at this time of the year is that some times the mist gets too thick that it becomes hard to see the falls themselves perfectly.

But as the mist clears a bit in the months of January and June, it becomes easier to see the Falls perfectly well plus the bottom of the cliff to see where the water – falls.

Though the water levels reduce a little bit, I believe it’s the perfect season to get a clear view of the Falls and to also take part in some of the Victoria Falls activities like White water rafting.

However, if you want to swim in the devil’s pool on the Zambian side, it can’t be done when the water levels are at their highest as its deadly, you’ll need to wait for September through December when the water levels reduce completely.

With those variations in mind, you’ll need to figure out what you exactly want to do at the Falls and choose the right time for you.

But regardless of what time of the year you visit the Victoria falls, I can guarantee that you’ll be blown away by this incredible natural wonder.

2. Which side of the boarder should you stay at

This might be the hugest debate and the most asked question about visiting the Victoria Falls. Since the Falls are right at the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, it’s sometimes not easy to decide where to stay or visit from.

Of course, it would be so cool to visit from both sides which you should actually do if you can but not everyone is lucky enough to have that option.

Visiting from either side has its own pros and cons that you should put into account. What I advise you is to look at the pros and cons of visiting from either side and then decide on the perfect side for you.

So to make decision making easy for you, here a few advantages and disadvantages of visiting from either side.

From the Zimbabwe side

  • You can see 75% of the waterfalls from the Zimbabwean side.
  • The Falls of the Zimbabwean side never dry out, unlike the Zambian side which dries out in the months of September to December.
  • The closest town “Victoria falls town” is just a few minutes’ walk from the Victoria falls which makes access very easy at any time of the day unlike the 10km distance of Livingstone town in Zambia from the Falls.
  • The cost of living is a bit high on the Zimbabwean side as the Victoria falls town is completely designed for tourists with everything a bit pricier than in Livingstone town in Zambia.

From the Zambian side

  • You can swim in the devil’s pool which is one of the bucket list activities for adrenaline junkies.
  • The cost of living is a bit low in Living stone town. Actually, even the entrance fee to the falls is a bit cheaper here compare to the Zimbabwean side.

With those few points, it’s easy to see why I highly recommend visiting from the Zimbabwean side . Regardless of when you visit, you’ll be able to enjoy one of the most famous landmarks in Africa from the Zimbabwean side.

3. Check to see if you need a Visa

If you have zeroed down on the side of the border you’ll be staying at, check with your government to see if you need a visa to enter either country and that should be easy.

The tourist Visa is $30 for Zimbabwe and $50 for Zambia but if it’s only a day trip, then you can expect to pay $20.

But what if you plan on visiting the Falls from both countries?

This can be the tricky part! Some people get a visa for one country and loosely assume that it will be automatic to access the falls from the other side of the border without another visa.

But just like crossing any border, you’ll still need to get a visa (depending on the passport you hold).

Zimbabwe might require you to get a visa and Zambia not, or the other way round! What I advise you to do is to make one country your visiting base and treat the other one as a day trip if you don’t plan on doing any activities there other than just seeing the Falls. This will save you a lot of money on accommodation.

You might also look into getting a double entry visa for your base country which is a bit cheaper instead of paying for two separate visas for when you’ll enter the country the second time after your day trip to the other side of the border.

But if both countries require you to get visas, still find out how easy/hard it is to obtain them and whether you need to get them before you travel or visas on arrival are possible. And if it’s Visa on arrival, make sure that you have cash on you to pay for them! It’s normally in US dollars.

Pro tip* Make sure that you get cleared with customs and get your Passport stamped for any border crossing you make not to run into any trouble with the law.

4. How to get to the Victoria Falls

The best part about visiting Victoria Falls is that it’s easily accessible regardless of where you’re coming from and which side of the border you choose to stay at.

To give you an idea, here is how to get to the Victoria Falls both in Zimbabwe and Zambia.

To Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe

Just fly directly into Victoria falls airport and take a taxi to Victoria Falls town.

If you’re flying from any of the Southern African countries, it’s super easy to fly directly to Victoria Falls town. For some countries, flights are not daily, so check to see and book your flight on time.

When you get to Victoria Falls town, it’s so easy to just walk to the falls depending on where you’re staying. Some hotels (mentioned later in this post) are just a 10 to 20 minutes’ walk to the falls.

But for hotels that are not within a walkable distance, some offer free shuttle transfers to and from the falls at specific times. But if you want to go on your own, you can just hire a taxi that will take you directly to the entrance of Victoria falls national park. It can be anywhere between $5 to $10 depending on the distance.

However, if your booked a guided tour (I recommend some later in the post), the tour company will pick you up and later drop you back to your hotel after the tour.

To Livingstone town in Zambia

You can still fly from any of the Southern African airports directly to Livingstone airport which is the getaway to the Falls in Zambia.

Unlike Victoria Falls town, Livingstone is not near the Falls to walk there so by all means, you will need to find a way to get. Still, some hotels offer free shuttle transfers to the falls but if not, then you can get a taxi from Livingstone which can be around $10 to $15 depending on the distance.

For a complete guide on how to get to the Victoria falls, check out this post to know exactly how to get there whether by flying, self-drive, or using buses from the major southern African countries.

7. Where to stay at Victoria Falls

You only need to book accommodation on just one side of the border if you plan to treat the other border as a day trip. And since there are so many things to do on the Zimbabwean side, I’d advise staying on this side.

But if you feel adventurous, have the money, time, and want to explore both sides a bit more, then you can choose to stay a couple of days on each side.

There is a variety of accommodation in both Victoria falls town and Livingstone town ranging from camping, budget, mid-range to luxury. So below are a few places I recommend on both the Zimbabwean and the Zambian side.

Accommodation at Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean side

For camping.

Victoria falls rest camp and Lodges

The camp offers a number of campsites for both pitched tents and rooftop tented cars. The campsites are fully developed with well-maintained ablutions plus electricity on-site.

The advantage of camping at Victoria falls rest camp is that it is just a few minutes walk to the Falls.

Other than camping, it also offers private guest houses for non-campers. There is also a restaurant on-site – (In da belly restaurant) which serves a variety of cuisines, so you don’t have to move far if you’re hungry.

Check prices, reviews or book your spot at the Victoria Falls rest Camp from here .

Budget accommodation

N1 Hotel & Campsite Victoria Falls

N1 Hotel is a perfect choice for budget travelers and it is just located 1 km away from the Victoria falls.

It also offers a camping area with beautiful green grasses though there is no privacy if you’re someone who wants it while camping.

Check prices, reviews or book a room at N1 Hotel from here.

Mid-range accommodation

Shearwater’s Explorers village

Shearwater Explorers village offers a variety of accommodation types from private chalets, dorm tents, to individual camping. It is also near Victoria Falls.

Campsites are reasonably cheap but the Chalets are mid-range which means that it can accommodate a number of budgets.

Check prices, reviews or book a room at Shearwater’s Explorers Village from here.

Luxury accommodation

Victoria falls Safari Suites

Located in the heart of Victoria falls town, Victoria Falls Safari Suites is a five-star hotel that commands luxury like no other. If want to be at home away from home, then this is the place to stay.

Camp Nkwazi

Camp Nkwazi   provides amazing views or River Zambezi as it’s right in front of the River. It’s also not far from Livingstone town which makes moving around easy. On top of that, you can participate in fishing and horse ride when you want to chill at the hotel.

Check prices, reviews or book a room at Camp Nkwazi from here.

The Royal Livingstone Hotel by Anantara

8. Things to do at Victoria Falls

victoria falls tips

Victoria Falls offer a range of activities to participate in spanning from the high adrenaline activities to the less adventurous. So below are a few activities you should plan to do on top of gazing at the glorious Falls.

Take a flight over the Victoria falls

Flying over the Victoria Falls is the most exciting activity at Victoria Falls. The flight offers breathing taking views of the Falls from all angles which makes you appreciate them even more.

The flight also comes with an Audio guide which is well in sync with everything making the experience even much more enjoyable.

It was truly the highlight of my entire trip to Victoria Falls and if it were possible, I would do it over and over again. It’s quite pricey but worth every single penny.

So don’t wait to reach there only to be told that it’s booked out on the day you want, book it now to save your spot. This is actually the exact flight I booked and I had an amazing time with Shearwater Victoria Falls.

Check prices, reviews, or book the Flight of Angels from here.

Pro tip* I opted for a flight of angels but I know some people would prefer the Scenic Microlight Flight. I couldn’t bring myself to do it. But if you’re more adventurous than me, then you can check out the prices, review availability, or even book a Microlight Flight from here. Also, if you’re taking the flight over the falls from the Zambian side, then this is the best flight to book .

Go for a sunset cruise along the Zambezi river.

A sunset cruise at Zambezi River is by far the best way to wind up a day while at Victoria falls. The cruise offers amazing views of the river and a chance to spot hippos and giraffes roaming around the Zambezi national park.

It’s an exciting moment where you get lose, have a couple of drinks and enjoy the most beautiful sunset at Zambezi river.

Check prices, reviews, or book the sunset cruise from here

Go Bungee jumping at the Victoria Falls bridge

For the adrenaline junkies, bungee jumping off the victoria falls bridge is a perfect opportunity to test your adrenaline levels.

Honestly, it can be a bit intimidating to jump off the bridge while looking down the bottom of the cliff but it’s one activity you’ve got to tick off your bucket list.

Check prices, reviews, or book your Bungee jumping adventure from here .

Test your adrenaline by going for white water rafting

This is not an activity for the faint-hearted as the rapids along River Zambezi are of grade 5. But there is no better way to experience the falls than this for extremely adventurous individuals.

I personally didn’t go for white water rafting but since I’ve done white water rafting at River Nile in Uganda , I know how fun, exciting and thrilling it can be and I bet it’s much better with the view of the Falls.

So if you plan to participate, this white water rafting tour is highly recommended by previous participants and I believe you’ll have a blast.

Check prices, reviews, or book your rafting spot from here .

Swim at the devil’s pool

This is truly one of the most fun things to do at Victoria Falls on the Zambian side. Imagine how cool it is to swim at the edge of one of the most famous waterfalls in the world! Incredible, right?

However, please note that swimming at the Devil’s pool can be done at specific times of the year as I mentioned earlier. So if you want to do it, you should first check to see if the time is right.

Check prices, reviews, or book your spot from here .

Go for a bridge swing

Believed to bring out the same heartbeat rate as Bungee jumping or even more, a bridge swing is one of the other adrenaline activities to do at the Victoria Falls.

With a free fall of 80m from the bridge, you’re bound to scream your lungs out as you take on this adventure- at least I did. However, it’s so much you don’t want to miss it.

Those are some of the few things to do at Victoria Falls but others include; the bridge slide, the bridge tour, Sunrise photography tour of the falls, Traditional Village tour , zip-lining, Quad biking, Gorge swing , and so many others. You can check out other fun things to do at the Victoria falls from my previous post.

9. Should you take a tour to the Falls?

If you’re already in Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe or in Livingstone town in Zambia, then you honestly don’t need to book a tour as the falls are nearby and easy to get.

Actually, even when you’re in the nearby countries, say Botswana or South Africa, and you can figure out the best way to get there on your own (you can refer to my previous post on how to get to Victoria fall ), then you may not need to book a tour. I personally did a self-drive from Botswana to Victoria Falls – so it’s totally doable.

However, not everyone wants to figure out the logistics of how, where, and when. If that’s you, then here are the best tours to Victoria falls that you can consider.

Day trip from Botswana to Victoria falls

If you are in Kasane, Botswana, and just want to take a day trip to the Falls and come back, then this day trip is perfect for you.

You get to see the beauty of the smoke that thunders without the hustles of organizing a trip. The best part about this day trip from Kasane to Victoria falls in Zimbabwe is that it’s only limited to 10 people which means that you won’t be overwhelmed by a large group.

Check for availability, prices, reviews or book your day trip from here

From Livingstone: Victoria falls guided tour

You might be in Livingstone town but what to have a guided tour to learn more about the facts and history of Victoria Falls. If that’s you, then this is the perfect tour to opt for .

With over 3 hours of the tour, you’ll learn everything and get all your questions answered as you hear from the knowleagable tour guides.

From Victoria falls town: Victoria Falls private guided tour

Victoria Falls might be within a walkable distance from Victoria Falls town but if you want to get a deeper understanding of this incredible world natural wonder, then opt for this private guided tour.

10. What to pack for Victoria Falls

When it comes to what to pack for Victoria Falls, you don’t need to take much. Just a backpack with a few items will be enough. But to make sure that you don’t forget anything, below are a few items that are essential.

  • Passport: Obviously you’ll need to take your passport to be able to purchase the entry ticket to the falls. You can also take a waterproof passport jacket to make sure that your passport doesn’t get wet.
  • A daypack: I am a backpacker, so I’ll always have a daypack with me wherever I travel to make sure that all my day’s essentials are kept well. I love the Osprey daypack as it’s lightweight, fits everything I need for a day, and also has a water bottle holder where I can just put my bottle. If you don’t have a daypack already, you can check it out here and I promise you’ll love it. You can check for prices and reviews on Amazon or on the actual Osprey website .
  • A good Camera: With this incredible sight in front of you, there is no way you wouldn’t want to take a thousand photos. I prefer a small camera as I can go anywhere with it without any hustles but you can get inspiration from these best travel cameras.
  • A waterproof raincoat : They say it never stops raining at the falls and they’re right! The water splashes so high, it feels like it’s raining the entire time. If you don’t take a rainjacket, I guarantee you’ll all be wet by the end of the tour (depending on the time of the year you visit). There are a number of shops nearby where you can rent a raincoat but it’s not cheap considering that you’ll be visiting the Falls for a couple of hours. So I recommend taking your own waterproof jacket to avoid spending more. I like this Columbia lightweight and waterproof rain jacket and for the guys, this one is perfect .
  • Sunglasses: They may not be necessary to protect your eyes from the sun or look cool for that matter but rather to protect them from the nonstop rain. You could pass on them but I know it’s not fun when water gets into the eyes the entire time.
  • Waterproof Phone Case: If you want to take photos very close to the falls, you might consider taking this waterproof phone case – well unless of course, your phone is water-resistant.
  • Comfortable walking shoes: There is so much to see and the place is quite big. And since you’ll be on foot the entire time, you might want to take comfortable walking shoes. Also, since water splashes all the time, the ground will definitely get slippery. So you might want to substitute your flip flops for your running shoes.
  • Travel Insurance: Travel Insurance is a must-have regardless of where you’re traveling to and Victoria falls is no exception. With travel bringing on its own challenges, you’ve got to be protected the entire time and the best way to do that is to cover yourself with World Nomads travel insurance. It covers a number of items including the most adventurous activities travelers love to do. You can request a quote from World Nomads from here.

11. How long should your visit last

There is no set time on how long your trip should last as that depends on how fast or paced you want to take in the views from each angle of the Falls.

But to get the most out of your visit and this is when you’ve seen every little corner, I suggest putting aside 2 to 3 hours. It might seem like a lot (or little for some), but it’s the ideal time.

If you’re not traveling with a group, you won’t have to worry about this as you can take your time without feeling like you’re delaying or rushing the others.

If you visit the Falls from the Zimbabwean side, it’s very easy to see every spot as they marked out well all the best viewpoints from 1 to 16 with 1 being the starting point – so it’s hard to skip any spot.

12. Where to eat at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls town is a major tourist place with so many great restaurants to eat at. Whether you want to try out Zimbabwean dishes or Mediterranean dishes, these restaurants offer a wide range of choices.

Lola’s Tapas.

Owned by Lola, a very friendly Spanish native, Lola’s Tapas is a great place to enjoy local games meat and Mediterranean cuisine.

While you’re there, try out the special Crocodile dish. And if you’re lucky, you’ll be treated to a performance from the local artists.

Shearwaters cafe

Want to treat yourself to a western meal? Then opt for Shearwaters cafe. It is perfectly located on the main street of victoria falls town serving a wide range of western meals and cocktails.

Shearwaters café has a great and welcoming ambiance – a quality that has made it a popular spot among tourists.

In da belly restaurant.

Located inside the Victoria falls rest camp, In da belly restaurant serves a mix of local game meats and traditional local dishes. The name “In da belly” is a play of words derived from “Ndebele”, one of the major tribes in Zimbabwe.

There you have it, those were the essential Victoria Falls tips you need to know to plan your trip well. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest, how excited are you to finally see the Victoria Falls! I know I was at 11, so I know how incredibly amazing it is.

For me, visiting the Victoria falls was one of my best travel experiences and I am excited for you! But if you’ve already been to this wonderful landmark, share with me how your experience was!

And if you have more questions as you plan your trip to the Victoria falls, leave them in the comment section and I will answer them soon.

The Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is a part of the Zambezi River, the fourth longest river in Africa. The falls create a natural border between two countries – Zimbabwe on the west and Zambia on the east .

About two-thirds of the people who come to see the mammoth cascade do so from Victoria Falls Town in Zimbabwe. The remaining third visit from Livingstone in Zambia.

Whichever country you plan to stay in, here’s what you need to know when planning your perfect trip .

High-Water Season (March – June)

🌤️ Average daytime temps : March=24ºC, April=23ºC, May=20ºC, June=17ºC

These are the months that the maximum volume of water pours over the cliffs from the Zambezi River. With a drop of up to 108 metres, the drama of the falls at this time of year is outstanding.

Not to mention, around 500 million litres of water pour over Vic Falls every minute. In contrast, it could be as little as 10 million litres per minute at the lowest.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean that this is the best time to view the falls .

This period follows the region’s rainy season, resulting in a thunderous and misty spectacle. So misty, in fact, that the falls themselves can be entirely obscured.

And this isn’t a soft, lightly raining sort of mist. This is a spray you can feel when it hits you. And if you spend any time in it at all, you will get drenched very quickly. Wet weather gear is recommended!

It can be next to impossible to get a good look at this massive curtain of water during these months, and even harder to take a good picture. You may want to plan your visit to Victoria Falls after high-water season .

But if your travels do bring you here during this time, views from the air are at their most dramatic.

🚁 This scenic helicopter flight has been rated 4.5/5 stars by 107 travellers and gives you 12-15 minutes in the air. Find out more and book it here ! Or double that time with this flight .

Or if you’d prefer an adventure with a little more adrenaline and fresh air, you might want to give a microlight flight a try . You can soar over the Zambezi River and the gorge below, getting right up close to the falls themselves.

You could even see some iconic African wildlife from up there – rhinos, elephants, crocodiles, and a lot more .

Fun Fact The name for the falls is Mosi-oa-Yunya , or ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ in local Sotho language

💦 Things To Do In Victoria Falls: High-Water Season

  • book a full day of Victoria Falls activities : a tour of the falls, a crafts market, a sunset cruise, dinner and a show, and more.
  • a rainforest walk in Victoria Falls National Park, on the Zimbabwean side of the falls. Along the path, you can see Rainbow, Main, and Horseshoe Falls, as well as the Devil’s Cataract.
  • walk the Knife Edge Bridge, aka Victoria Falls Bridge, over the Second Gorge, between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Getting soaked in the spray is a part of the fun!
  • from the middle of March to the middle of June, take a dip in Angel’s Pool, on Livingstone Island in the Zambezi River in Zambia.

Fun Fact The Zimbabwe side is the best place to see the sunrise above Victoria Falls

Medium Water Season (July to early August & January to February):

🌤️ Average daytime temps : July=17ºC, Aug=20ºC, Jan=25ºC, Feb=24ºC

⭐️ Victoria Falls in July and August is absolutely ideal for seeing the falls at the peak of their glory . Dry season is in full swing, and the days are sunny and warm and the nights are cooler.

Plus, the water levels are getting lower, meaning reduced spray, so you’ll have the clearest views of the falls.

There’s still enough spray, though, that you’ll very likely get to witness the ethereal lunar rainbows, also called ‘moonbows’ . Mid-morning and mid-afternoon are the best times to see them.

There are even more advantages to choosing July and August to come to Victoria Falls ↴

Safari Time

When the water levels begin to drop at the end of June, wildlife moves in to feed on the lush, newly exposed grass. And in the dry season, water sources for the animals diminish, and they all make use of the remaining few.

Both of these factors make July and August excellent times to add a safari to your trip . Enjoy some of the best of Africa, and combine your visit to Victoria Falls with a safari in one of the nearby national parks.

Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe and Chobe in Botswana are both close to the falls . They each offer unique and unforgettable wildlife experiences.

Imagine going from the world’s largest waterfall to spotting elephants, lions, and leopards.

You can tour both parks as well as the falls in a 6-day trip , or pick one park or the other for an amazing day trip.

Some great trips combining Victoria Falls with other destinations are available. Or you can tour the falls today and spend the full day tomorrow on safari. Hwange has one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa , so sightings are incredible.

Chobe Park is a lush, green wildlife wonderland. You can’t go wrong, whichever park you choose.

An aerial shot of Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River with the spray rising from the gorge below. For some, the best time to visit Victoria Falls, especially if you want to see them at full capacity.

January and February are the height of the rainy season , still with moderate water levels. Don’t expect sunny skies, and of course, you’ll have rainy days. But the falls will drench you regardless, so why not enjoy it?

Between the clouds and the mist, the area is shrouded in mystical vapours a great deal of the time. The effect is pretty magical – but make sure your camera is moisture-proof !

Through the mist, you’ll get to see the kush, green vegetation, and the stunning rainforest flowers that bloom this time of year. A visit early in the year may be worth it just for them.

💦 Things To Do In Victoria Falls: Medium Water Season

  • tour nearby Chobe National Park and Hwange National Park
  • take advantage of the excellent photo opportunities in the rainforest surrounding the falls

Fun Fact The exit gate for the Zambian side is close enough to the first viewpoint that you’ll be able to watch the sunset behind the falls and still make it out of the gate before the park closes.

Victoria Falls at Low Water Season, with just a small column of water pouring over to the gorge on the Zambia side. Some spray visible form Zimbabwe in the distance.

Low Water Season (September to December ):

🌤️ Average daytime temps : Sept=25ºC, Oct=27ºC, Nov=27ºC, Dec=25ºC

The falls are much less powerful during this time, as water levels reach their lowest point. You can expect to see the Falls in a different light, but the area is still extraordinary.

As the Zambezi River’s water level recedes, the thunder of the falls becomes a tamer spectacle. There’s an unexpected but really stunning advantage to seeing the falls at their lowest .

You actually get to see the rock formations that are normally hidden under the cascade.

Around October, Victoria Falls is sometimes referred to as the ‘Victoria Wall’, for this reason. It’s the perfect time to explore the gorge at the bottom of the falls.

On the Zambian side – the hike may no longer be available on the Zimbabwean side – take the path down to the Boiling Pot. The Boiling Pot is an enormous natural whirlpool that you shouldn’t miss .

It’s an insanely incredible experience to look up-up-up the wall and realize where you are!

October tends to be the hottest time of the year, so the swim feels great. While 27ºC may not sound that hot, it feels hot . Especially with the humidity in the air.

The occasional thunderstorms add a bit of drama to the landscape now, too . Be sure to check the forecast for storms before you head out to the gorge.

Victoria Falls from Zambia looking towards Zimbabwe at he spray.

Despite the low water levels on the Zambian side, though, the Zimbabwean side of the Falls continues to flow . You’re never really without a little waterfall action.

Water levels reach their lowest in November. This is prime time to enjoy all of the water activities that are available to you. Not only are they just a lot of fun, but with the heat, the water feels terrific.

By the time December rolls around, the rains are approaching again . Usually. I visited the falls in Zambia toward the end of December.

The rains were delayed that year, as you can see from the photo at the top of this section.

But while the volume of water pouring down from the Zambezi River wasn’t anything to write home about, it was still a spectacular experience !

The scale of the escarpment itself is breathtaking, and walking through the gorgeous rainforest was a winning experience in itself for me.

And while I wasn’t drenched by spray from the falls, I did end up a little damp from the heat and the humidity.

I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t a little more water pouring over the falls, but I wasn’t surprised. I was still absolutely glad to be there, and I’d definitely go in December again if I was in the neighbourhood .

I highly recommend, whenever you get the chance to go – do it. You won’t be disappointed .

💦 Things To Do In Victoria Falls: Low Water Season

  • swim in the ‘Devil’s Pool’ at the very edge of the falls, on Livingstone Island, in the Zambezi River. You’ll have unobstructed views of the stone wall. Usually open Aug-Jan.
  • September and October are excellent times to go whitewater rafting.

🌊 Spend a half-day white water rafting on the Zambezi River . Opt for the class 4 and 5 rapids, or enjoy a tamer option – your choice!

  • spend a day canoeing on the upper Zambezi .

Other Things to Do in Victoria Falls

There are some activities that you can do any time of year , and the setting just makes them over the top amazing .

  • bungee jumping – some call this the best site for a bungee jump anywhere!
  • zip-lining – the longest zip-line ride in the world
  • the High Wire flying fox – a highwire slide, similar to a superhero-style zipline
  • the gorge swing – enjoy a 70-meter freefall and a 95-meter pendulum swing out over the gorge

Victoria Falls from Cape Town

An exciting option if you’re planning to be in Cape Town but would love to see Victoria Falls, is to book an excursion. There are several tours that will take you from Cape Town to Victoria Falls .

The routes vary, and you could choose to go through Kruger National Park and enjoy safaris there. Another will take you through Chobe National Park in Botswana, as well as Etosha in Namibia .

When you arrive at Victoria Falls you’ll be treated to viewing and activities that top off an amazing trip in style.

When to Visit Victoria Falls: FAQ

✔️ how many days do i need to visit victoria falls.

If you only want to take in the falls and walk through the rainforest, a day or two might be enough for you. If you’d like to have some fun and experience the Devil’s Pool or do some zip-lining, try to plan for 2 or 3 days.

But maybe you’d like to take advantage of your proximity to Hwange in Zimbabwe and Chobe National Park. You can combine your time here with a safari. In this case, take 2 or 3 days to enjoy the falls and a few activities, and try to squeeze in at least 5 or 6 days for your safari.

✔️ What time of year does Victoria Falls dry up?

The water level at Victoria Falls is generally at its lowest in the middle of November, just before the start of the rainy season. Though you’re like to still see some water flow over the falls in the Zimbabwean side, it’s a great time to explore and swim in the gorge below.

✔️ What’s the best time of day to go to Victoria Falls?

If you’re on the Zimbabwe side of the falls, sunrise if a spectacular time to go to the falls. From here you’re able to see the spectacle above the falls themselves.

If you’re viewing Victoria Falls in Zambia, sunset is the perfect time. You can see the sun sink behind the falls from the first viewpoint and still exit the gate before it closes for the day.

And if you love seeing the rainbows in the mist, then mid-morning and mid-afternoon are the best times for you.

✔️ Is Victoria Falls better than Niagara Falls?

While both are incredible natural wonders, Victoria Falls is almost twice as tall as Niagara Falls. It’s also about half a kilometre wider. When you add in the epic African wildlife nearby, I’d have to vote for Victoria Falls.

✔️ What should I wear to Victoria Falls?

When deciding what to wear when you visit Victoria Falls, consider when you’ll be there. It’s a good idea to bring a raincoat, especially if you’ll be visiting in January or February, the height of the rainy season.

You’ll also need wet weather gear during high water season, from around March to June, to protect you from the heavy spray off the falls.

Keep in mind the temperature can get cool in the mornings and evenings, especially in July and August. But regardless of when you visit, bring shoes that will keep you from slipping on the slick paths.

✔️ Is Victoria Falls a malaria risk area?

Yes , there is a risk of contracting malaria when you visit Victoria Falls. Be sure to pack insect repellent and speak with your doctor about preventative medication.

The best things to do in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Between a silhouetted rocky cliff and rainforest-clad outcrop is a seething Zambezi; a arching rainbow bills the right of the image, while the Victoria Falls are seen 'smoking' between the two cliffs.

Home to one of the world’s great natural wonders – Mosi-oa-Tunya, ‘the smoke that thunders ’ – the Zimbabwean town of Victoria Falls delivers what it says on the tin. But this diminutive place also has an eclectic identity beyond its star attraction.

Its artisan craft markets, micro-breweries, raucous drum shows, adrenaline activities and sophisticated high teas (with some serious views) will reward those who resist the urge to hightail it out of town after snapping some shots of the falls. Staying for a couple of days will allow you to get the feel of Zimbabwe’s blockbuster border town.

Between a silhouetted rocky cliff and rainforest-clad outcrop is a seething Zambezi; a arching rainbow bills the right of the image, while the Victoria Falls are seen 'smoking' between the two cliffs.

Day one: morning

It’s your first day in Victoria Falls and you can’t dance around the reason you came here. Head to Victoria Falls National Park early in the morning (the park opens at 6am, with seasonal variations) to avoid the crowds and intense midday heat. After paying the US$30 entry and passing through the cute gift shop, resist the urge to immediately turn left – one of the most staggering views is down a forested track to the right. Just before the statue of David Livingstone, you'll get an eyeful of the Devil’s Cataract, a panoramic shot down the falls sliced with dazzling rainbow prisms. Now you can explore the rest of the park and its jaw-dropping viewpoints, each impossibly outdoing the last. Pause and relish in the thundering rumble and soak hot brows in the clouds of spray billowing off the cascades.

A river raft is deluged and almost turned over by an intense set of rapids on the Zambezi; most of the rafters have one hand on a paddle and the other firmly on the raft's safety line.

Next stop is a short walk into town for lunch at the Shearwater Cafe . This bright, airy and thoughtfully-designed space wouldn’t feel out of place in Barcelona or London, until you get to the menu which serves up traditional, locally-source fare with a contemporary flourish (crocodile wasabi wrap, anyone?). If, however, you’re in the market for a blood-pumping close-up of the falls, put lunch on pause and visit Wild Horizons first. Free-fall 70m before its world-famous gorge swing catapults you cross the chasm or soar 120m above the coursing Zambezi on a 425m-long zipline. There’s no wilder ride, though, than whitewater rafting – visit when water levels are low (July to December) for the ultimate thrill.

Beneath a tree canopy sits a wooden A-frame building that is the home of The River Brewing Co; people sit around tables sitting in front of the building.

Day one: afternoon

Once your blood pressure has dropped, allow your lunch to digest while you browse the curios of Elephant Walk Shopping and Artist Village , an eight-minute walk from Shearwater Cafe. Here, high-end silver smiths and jewellery studios mingle with artisan galleries and boutique souvenir shops in a tropical garden setting. If this morning’s activities haven’t given you a metaphorical taste of the Zambezi, you can get a literal one adjacent to this souvenir paradise at the River Brew Co . From the light Kaza Blonde to the chocolatey Jack Tar Porter, all the beers here are brewed from pure Zambezi water. Book a brewery tour or while away an afternoon on their sunny patio with a tasting paddle and a hearty, pub grub-style dinner.

A hippo, with mouth agape and facing skyward, protrudes from the waters of the Zambezi River; a second hippo (only eyes and ears visible) lurks in the water nearby.

Day one: evening

Anywhere else in the world a sunset river cruise might feel a bit sedate and retro, but in Victoria Falls it's anything but. Grab a drink from the boat's bar and wait for the show; come dusk, the river banks of the Zambezi erupt with elusive wildlife. Let your on-board guide point out swooping heron, regal African fish eagles, grazing buffalo and, if you’re lucky, a pod of hippos slashing in the shallows or an elephant calf and mother coyly hiding in the bushes. Even as you wend your way back to shore the show isn’t over – as the sun slips out of the frame, you’ll be treated to the unforgettable image of the inky banks of the Zambezi silhouetted against a flamingo-pink sky.

A view from the back of an open-topped 4WD safari vehicle; it looks down over the driver and hood of the truck to the dirt road head, with the sun shining brightly on the horizon.

Day two: morning

Rise at the crack of dawn (early birds catch the once-in-a-lifetime worm, and all that) for the ultimate, animal-spotting adventure. Public wildlife drives are run throughout the Zambezi National Park  and  Stanley and Livingstone Game Reserve , and some lodges, such as Masuwe , offer their own tours through private reserves, so check at your accommodations and ensure you go with a reputable guide. During a quintessential safari experience, your open-sided 4WD will trundle through cinematic landscapes, allowing you to see heavy hitters such as elephant, giraffe, kudu, warthog and impala enjoying their natural habitat. The moment you spot a well-camouflaged giraffe peeking between two skeletal trees or a witness kudu shape-shift out of the shrubbery, you get a real appreciation for being allowed inside their world – so sit back, stay quiet and revel in their awesomeness from a safe distance.

A curtain of water plunges over the mile-wide precipice that is Victoria Falls; misty clouds rise into the skies, while the waters of the Zambezi are channeled through the narrow gorge that makes the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

After your wildlife drive, it’s all about those big, beautiful views. Victoria Falls Bridge should be on every traveller’s itinerary. Built in 1905, it’s a pioneering example of Victorian-era engineering and provides some of the most magnificent (if a little head-spinning) 360 views across and into the gorge. Plenty of tours will take you over and underneath this historic landmark, but it’s much cheaper to do it yourself. Stroll down to the tiny immigration office, pay your US$30 (single-entry visa) and off you go – the gob-smacking vistas are yours for the taking. Get a snap of yourself crossing into Zambia in the middle of the bridge, but bear in mind, if you actually want to cross into Livingstone, Zambia and get your passport stamped on the other side, you will need to purchase a double-entry visa when you arrive in Zimbabwe.

Beyond a foreground of lush bush are the rapids of the Zambezi river and mist from Victoria Falls; behind the rainbow is the graceful arch of Victoria Falls Bridge.

Day two: afternoon

As the day’s heat begins to ramp up, head back into town to the palatial, Edwardian-style Victoria Falls Hotel for afternoon tea. Scoff tiny cucumber sandwiches and deftly-crafted macaroons on the breezy Stanley’s Terrace overlooking the manicured lawns. On clear days the terrace affords postcard-perfect views across the gorge and bridge, at times shimmering behind plumes of mist from the thundering falls. Built only a year before the bridge, Victoria Falls Hotel is an icon of luxury in Southern Africa . While you’re here, wander the gardens (keeping an eye out for families of the fanciest warthogs who call these grounds home) or book a massage at the spa.

Day two: evening

Kick things up a notch in the evening with dinner at the Boma . An African boma is a type of circular enclosure used for shelter and as the setting for social gatherings, where people would congregate around the fire to share folkloric, ancestral tales. The Boma – Dinner and Dance Show at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge takes all those traditional elements and blows them out into a mad, magical spectacular that’ll have you dressing up, dining on a mind-bending array of traditional dishes and even earning your mopane worm eating certification. After your sumptuous four-course dinner set around an open-spit fire, teams of drummers and dancers take to the floor. Follow in the community spirit from which the night is inspired and master some rhythms on your own drum or get up and get dancing – the energy of the night is contagious.

A man jumps into Devil's Pool in the Zambezi River at the top of Victoria Falls; a rim of rock creates the pool that stops swimmers from getting swept over the falls.

Make it happen

The falls are at their most mighty February to June, but July to September actually affords you better views. For epic whitewater rapids, the best time to visit is July to December. Zimbabwe’s green season blooms in late-October/November and is a great time for spotting wildlife. Victoria Falls has a range of amazing accommodation options from the opulent Victoria Falls Hotel and luxury safari-style lodges such as Masuwe to the budget-friendly favourite  Victoria Falls Backpackers . Travellers with a little extra cash to burn could also add a helicopter ride and a trip to the infamous Devil’s Pool  in Zambia to their itinerary.

As of June this year, the only legal tender in the country is the newly reintroduced Zimbabwe dollar. There are some bureaux de change, however, which will exchange US dollars. It’s advised that you travel into Zimbabwe with all the cash you’ll need, as few places take card and you won’t be able to withdraw cash with your bank or credit cards.

Best time to visit victoria falls.

The best time to visit Victoria Falls is from February to May , during the high-water season. The falls are at their most spectacular during this period, offering a breathtaking display of cascading water. You can witness the sheer power and grandeur of the falls up close. The increased water flow creates a shower of mist and the appearance of rainbows around the falls .

However, if you want to experience the Devil’s Pool , you will have to visit during the low-water season. From September to December , the water level is low enough for a natural rock formation to become accessible. This formation, known as the Devil’s Pool, is located right at the edge of the falls, and allows you to peer over the edge to the gorge below!

What to Bring to Victoria Falls

Here are some of the essentials to bring to Victoria Falls:

  • Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes (This is especially useful if you will be crossing the Zambian-Zimbabwean border on foot.)
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat
  • Binoculars  (for viewing the wildlife near the falls)
  • Rain jacket

Where to Stay Around Victoria Falls

There are a few different options to choose from when deciding where to stay around Victoria Falls. What you choose will depend on your budget, desired level of luxury, and what kind of experiences you wish to have. In general , I recommend staying in Livingstone, as it is cheaper with more options for lodging, restaurants, and nightlife.

Fawlty Towers

If you are on a budget, Fawlty Towers is a great option. I stayed here for a few nights and paid about $10 USD/night . This is a great place to meet other travelers, as well as relax by the private pool. It is also centrally located near several restaurants and bars.

Victoria Falls Waterfront

If you want to stay right on the Zambezi River, the Victoria Falls Waterfront is the most economical option. This hotel provides an option for guests to sleep on beds inside a tent for around $40 USD/night . This is the best way to stay on the banks of the Zambezi for budget travelers.

Royal Livingstone Hotel by Anantara

For a truly luxury experience, consider staying at the Royal Livingstone Hotel by Anantara . This resort is conveniently located near Victoria Falls and the border with Zimbabwe. If you want to relax on your balcony while admiring the falls, this is the place to be.

Check out the map below for available accommodations.

Tips for Visiting

Before your trip to Victoria Falls , here are 5 tips to ensure your visit goes smoothly.

1. Ensure your gear is waterproof

Prepare to get wet! The spray from Victoria Falls can be intense, so bring a raincoat or waterproof gear to keep yourself dry and protect your camera or electronics. I recommend bringing a Ziploc bag for your phone to protect it from the water.

2. Make sure that you use the local currencies

If you are visiting Victoria Falls from Livingstone, you should carry Zambian kwacha with you. This will ensure that you do not get overcharged by vendors or taxi drivers who hope that you do not know the correct conversion rate. In Zimbabwe, however, it is normal to use American dollars. The Zimbabwean dollar is not widely used, and due to extreme inflation, becomes devalued each day.

3. Determine the appropriate visa for your trip

If you plan to cross the border solely to see Victoria Falls and not engage in any other activities or stay overnight, it’s important to know the visa requirements for the specific country you’re entering.  I met a few travelers who were annoyed to find out that they overpaid for a certain visa, when the visa that they were required to get was actually cheaper!  Click here for more information about the different visas available.

4. Explore the surrounding area

Victoria Falls is not only located on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe , but also near the borders of Namibia and Botswana ! This makes it a great location for visiting national parks , going on a wildlife safari , or participating in activities like bungee jumping or white water rafting .

5. Try some local delicacies while you are there

There are some unique delicacies that you can try on both sides of the border. For those who are looking for something exotic, you can try some kudu stew or crocodile kebabs at Cafe Zambezi in Livingstone. If you want something more traditional, try some mopane worms or kapenta , which are very small, very tasty freshwater fish.

Best Time To Visit Victoria Falls

Choose the best time to visit victoria falls.

When it comes to Victoria Falls and the best time to visit, there is an optimal time of the year to travel depending on your interests. However, February to May sees the falls flowing at its greatest volume, thanks to the annual summer rains and continued comfortable weather.

That being said,  Victoria Falls makes a fantastic year-round destination thanks to its mild winters, hot summers, and enviable location straddling  Zambia  and  Zimbabwe . It will come as no surprise that a journey to Victoria Falls is a prominent feature on many of  Our Favourite Tours .

Summer

Summer runs from October to April, during which time it gets quite hot - up to around 30°C. Evening and night temperatures drop to approximately 14°C. Dramatic thunderstorms may light up your afternoons, while the summer rains wash through the area between November and March.

Winter is from May to September/October. The days are mild and largely dry and sunny - around 20°C, with the temperature at night drops and can sometimes get as cold as 5ºC.

How does the weather affect your stay?

The summer months are generally hotter and the short afternoon thunderstorms often make way for magnificent sunsets. This is the time of year where you can get your tan on at your poolside hotel and head back home a bronzed version of yourself.

The winter months are characterised by long sunny days with cold nights where warm clothes will be needed. Swimming isn't really recommended at this time of year, unless cold water temperatures are your thing! The Zambezi River's waters are high in the month of April meaning white water rafting isn't normally possible at this time. However, this activity is dependant on seasonal change, so be sure to check with your Rhino Africa Consultant first.

The dry winters often result in sparse vegetation which makes game viewing a treat in the Victoria Falls area. Wildlife are forced to congregate around water sources and large herds of elephant and buffalo are often spotted along the water's edge jostling for a drink.

High Water and Low Water Explained

' High Water ' occurs between February and July, peaking between March and April. During this period, a rise of one metre in the level of the Zambezi river produces a 5 metre increase in the level of the water forced through the gorge. The spray thrown up is dense, thick with rainbows, and sure to get anyone nearby drenched - a fantastic sight when viewed from the air.

‘ Low Water ’ runs between August and January and is at its lowest between November and early December. This is the time when there is very little spray and visitors are able to fully appreciate the geological formation of Victoria Falls and the full length and breadth of them. The water level in the gorge drops and the Zambezi River's conditions are ideal for white water rafting and has earned a reputation as one of the wildest in the world. This is also a great time of year to take a dip in the Devil's Pool.

Best Times to Visit Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is the largest waterfall in Africa, measuring over 300 feet in height and 5000 feet in width . So, if you love traveling around the world, you’ve probably heard of Victoria Falls and are thinking of touring the area. But when should you visit to get the most out of your trip?

In this article, we’ll share the best times to visit Victoria Falls in descending order and what to do in each season.

When is Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls?

The best time to visit Victoria Falls is between February and May when the waterfall is flowing at its peak. But other seasons in Victoria Falls also have their unique appeal. For instance, high-adrenaline activities like bungee jumping are best done between June and December.

  • February to May

The period between February and May is the most suitable time of the year to visit Victoria Falls because the water is filled to the brim. The waterfall has had enough time to fill itself up from the heavy rains of the past year. February to May is also the time when the waterfall rapids are at their fastest.

The weather during this period is quite hot. So, if you choose to visit then, make sure to pack light clothes and sunscreen in your luggage.

What To Do in Victoria Falls Between February and May

  • Stroll Through Victoria Falls

Take a ten-minute stroll through Victoria Falls and witness the water dropping from great heights. You’ll also hear the pleasant sound of water rushing at lightning speed and foaming in the Boiling Pot. You may get soaked while taking this stroll, but it’ll be a much-needed relief from the scorching sun.

  • Explore the Forest in Victoria Falls National Park

Victoria Falls contains rare trees like Mopane, Wild date palm, Cape fig, and milkwood. One of the most notable trees in the forest is the strangling creeper, which grows over other trees and kills its host tree after attaining maturity.

Explore the Forest in Victoria Falls National Park

Standing close to the park is another outstanding tree called the Big Tree. This tree earns its name from its size, which at 20m long and 16m wide, is quite impressive. But the most interesting fact about this special baobab tree is that it has existed for over 1000 years . The Big Tree has survived several disasters, like the flooding that occurred after the completion of the Kariba Dam Wall in 1956.

  • Birdwatch at Chobe National Park

Birdwatch at Chobe National Park at the Victoria Falls

If you visit Victoria Falls around April or May, you’ll be able to see several birds at the nearby Chobe National Park. Birds like ibis, African fish eagles, kingfishers, Marabou storks, and black-winged stilts fly to the park around this time.

Remember to pack your binoculars for the birding trip. It’s also important to stay still and keep mute during the trip, as forest birds often get shy when they sense humans around them.

  • June to September

By June, the water in Victoria Falls has slightly dried off due to low rainfall, but it still looks magnificent. There are beautiful formations of mist around the spray, and a lunar rainbow appears on the face of the waterfall.

When you take a stroll across the waterfall, you’ll see unique geological structures on different areas of the site.

Don’t miss the huge layer of Basalt that surrounds the waterfall.

The Basalt is a dark volcanic rock that was formed after a volcano erupted millions of years ago. It boasts a width of 200km, stretching across the Zambezi River area in Kazungula to the river’s confluence with the Matetsi River in the Batoka Gorge.

The weather at this time is cooler than in the first quarter of the year. So, if you can’t tolerate torrid weather but you hate winter, you should consider scheduling your tour to Victoria Falls between June and September.

What to Do in Victoria Falls Between June and September

  • See the Stunning Moon Rainbow on the Waterfall

See the Stunning Moon Rainbow on the Waterfall in Victoria Falls

Visit Victoria Falls on a full moon night to see the lunar rainbow reflected over the waterfall. This rainbow is so-called because it results from a refraction of moonlight instead of sunlight, unlike common rainbows.

The lunar rainbow is often difficult to see during the high-water season (February – May) because of the flooding of water over the rocks. But the rainbow becomes more visible when the waterfall is slightly dried. Even then, you might still need a camera to make out the rainbow and distinguish its color. Only people with strong night vision and highly-sensitive retinas can see the rainbow clearly with naked eyes.

  • White Water Rafting

White water rafting in Victoria Falls is another adventure that will get your adrenaline pumping. When engaging in this activity, you sit in a paddleboat and crash through the rapids in the waterfall.

Although white water rafting is usually available to tourists throughout the year, it’s best to wait until June to try it, especially if you are a beginner.

The high volume of water at the beginning of the year makes the rapids difficult to paddle through. Besides, rafting isn’t as thrilling as in the low-water season (June to December) because the water often floods the rocks as you paddle. By June, the water level drops enough to crash through the rocks when your boat hits the rapids.

A guide will provide you with detailed paddling instructions and safety measures. You’ll then receive a paddle, life jacket, and helmet before heading to your paddle boat and facing the first rapid.

Your paddle boat will have a rafting guide, who will inform you when you need to paddle forward or backward, and when to stay still. But you won’t spend the whole day paddling.

After every 5 rapids, you’ll raft through long, calm stretches of water. You can spend this break admiring the beautiful scenery, watching birds, viewing wildlife, or chatting with your fellow rafters.

  • Watch the Big 5 at Chobe National Park

The season between June and September is a great time to view wildlife in Victoria Falls. Since the rains have stopped, many animals spend time in the open, searching for water to drink.

The Big 5 Predators— Lion, Cape Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard, and Rhinoceros— also walk around the forest looking for prey to devour. You can find these animals at the nearby Chobe National Park or Moremi Park Reserve.

  • October to January

The highlight of Victoria Falls between October and January is the array of massive gorges on the waterfall. Since the waterfall is at its lowest, the rocks that surround the waterfall are clearly visible.

You can admire their huge size or study the zigzag patterns on them. Even if you move closer to the gorges to get a better view, you won’t get drenched.

The weather around this period is usually cool due to frequent occurrences of heavy rains, making it a comfortable time for Westerners to visit.

What to Do in Victoria Falls Between October and January

  • Swim in Devil’s Pool

If you want to experience a thrilling activity, you should take a dip in Devil’s Pool. Devil’s Pool is a natural 10-ft pool located inside Victoria Falls.

The currents in this pool move just as fast as the waves in Victoria Falls. You also risk the possibility of falling over the edge of the pool while swimming. So, if you are still an amateur swimmer, you should only take a shallow dive into the pool.

Experienced swimmers who float to the deeper ends of the pool must follow the instructions of the swimming guides to stay safe. While you swim, some of the guides will might stay around the edge of the pool to prevent you from falling.

  • Bungee Jump from Victoria Falls Bridge

Bungee Jump from Victoria Falls Bridge

Challenge yourself with a thrilling jump off the Victoria Falls Bridge. As the bridge boasts 111m in length, jumping from its top will make you feel like you’re free-falling. Add that to the backdrop of Victoria Falls and the bottom view of the great Zambezi River, and you have a refreshing but scary feeling you can’t get anywhere else.

No wonder celebrities like Will Smith and Evan McGregor couldn’t resist taking the plunge.

You don’t have to do the usual head-first dive, unless you’re a beginner. If you’re an experienced bungee jumper, you can try a backflip or an inward tuck. Some pros even attempt jumping with a kayak or bicycle.

  • Zipline Across the Batoka Gorge

The Wild Horizons Zipline at Victoria Falls is the longest zipline in the world. The zipline stretches over 425 m and lasts for one hour.

The staff will attach you to a cable suspended 120m above the Zambezi River before launching you to the edge of the line. As you move across the cable, your speed will keep rising until you’re traveling at 106 km/hour to the end of the line.

  • INTELLIGENT TRAVEL

How to Visit Victoria Falls

It’s not the widest or the tallest falls in the world, but it is without doubt the most impressive.

Victoria Falls is on almost everyone’s bucket list, but few people know the best way to experience it. On a recent trip to southern Africa, I saw it from every which way, so you don’t have to.

Why is it worth visiting?

Known by locals as Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “the smoke that thunders,” it was first seen by Western eyes in 1855 when British explorer David Livingstone came upon it and named it after his queen. Reflecting on the experience of seeing Victoria Falls for the first time, he wrote, “Scenes so lovely must be gazed upon by angels in their flight.”

The cataract still has that power to strike awe. It spans about a mile—the entire width of the Zambezi River—and drops a distance about twice the height of Niagara into a narrow gorge in one seemingly continuous sheet, forcing mist to rise high into the sky.

Not only can you see it, but you can hear it (from about a mile away), feel it, smell it, and taste it.

Where is it?

The falls straddles Zimbabwe to the west and Zambia to the east. You can access it from either country, via the town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe or Livingstone in Zambia. Both have good air connections.

Zimbabwe has historically been the more popular entry point, but political turmoil and hyperinflation in the 2000s made Zambia preferable.

Zambia has been one of Africa’s most stable and understated democracies; its safari lodges are known for their old-fashioned hospitality and plentiful wildlife.

Tip: At the airport of the country you enter first—Zimbabwe or Zambia—make sure you obtain the UniVisa (currently U.S. $50 for nationals from many countries) that serves as a multicountry pass.

How do I get there?

There are national park entrances on both sides of the falls, easily accessible from the towns of either Livingstone or Victoria Falls.

If you’ve booked through a safari operator, your guide will simply drive you to the entrance. The per-person fee is $20 on the Zambia side and $30 on the Zimbabwe side.

Which side is better?

Put very briefly: To see the falls, go to Zimbabwe; to feel the falls, go to Zambia.

But I recommend seeing it from both sides, and here’s why:

The Zambia side at high flow (February to June) is an exhilaratingly visceral experience; visitors walking on the other side of the narrow gorge can feel the spray (get drenched or rent a poncho). In the dry season, because the falls are at an incline, portions of land stay dry, which opens up other opportunities (see question on Devil’s Pool, below).

The Zimbabwe side tends to offer the more picturesque views because the viewpoints are farther, offering perspective. If you go in the height of the dry season, say, in November, the water volume is at a low point and the falls can feel a little underwhelming.

Can I do both sides in a day?

In fact, I did both sides in a couple of hours. Make sure you have a multiple-country visa in your passport. From either Livingstone or Victoria Falls, visit the border-crossing office and get your passport stamped for exit.

You can drive or walk across the bridge between the two countries, get your passport stamped for entry, and walk to the national park entrance.

If you wish to return, make sure you get your passport stamped leaving the country and entering the other country.

  • Nat Geo Expeditions

However, I feel compelled to mention that one of the most compelling experiences I had didn’t even require park entrance. I stood on the bridge between the two countries, straddled Zim and Zam, and gazed at the world’s most famous waterfall.

There were a few other Western tourists, but I was mostly joined by the cross-border drivers and migrant workers. Safety during the day on the border road isn’t much of a concern, though travelers do have to deal with polite but pesky trinket sellers.

What else can I do at the falls area?

A luxury dinner train crosses from Zambia to Zimbabwe over the Zambezi River and stops in the middle for a view of the Falls (though plans call for an additional departure in the other direction).

For an aerial view, microlight flights are popular, and so is bungee jumping. There are comfortable or luxury lodges near both towns, often the launching points of multiday wildlife safaris.

I’ve seen photos of people standing at the edge of the falls. How do I do that and is it dangerous?

Devil’s Pool is an experience you can have only on the Zambia side and only during the dry season (mid-August to mid-January). It involves a boat ride on the Zambezi to Livingstone Island, from which you can swim in a natural pool at the edge of the falls.

Breathe easy: An unseen lip prevents you from actually going over. Run by a well-regarded tour operator, the Devils Pool is not a dangerous activity—provided you follow the directions of the guides. There are other unofficial natural pools in which people have gone over the edge; make sure your outfitter is licensed.

The Ultimate First Time Visitor’s Guide to Victoria Falls

LAST UPDATED: 4/12/23 – Visitor’s Guide to Victoria Falls

Before Dr. David Livingstone happened to cross paths with it during his explorations of Africa back in 1855, most of the Western world had no idea that Victoria Falls even existed. After seeing this stunning natural wonder for the first time, he nicknamed the Falls “the smoke that thunders” because of the thundering crash and clouds of drenching mist that the enormous amount of water falling into the Victoria Falls gorge creates.

After falling in love with its beauty, he formally named it after the British Monarch at the time, Queen Victoria. As I explain in this guide to Victoria Falls, the Falls are located on the mighty Zambezi River, which forms a natural border between the countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia. While it may not be the tallest or the widest waterfall in the world, Victoria Falls is the world’s largest sheet of water and is a natural wonder that every traveler should see with their own eyes.

Guide to Victoria Falls

While I know you probably want to start making plans to visit Victoria Falls right away, I would strongly suggest taking the time to research your trip first. This way, you can be sure to see and do everything that you want to do and have a trip that you will remember for a lifetime. One of the best ways to do that is to read this detailed guide to Victoria Falls.

In this guide to Victoria Falls, I am going to provide you will all of the information that you need to plan a successful trip to see this beautiful wonder of the world. At a Glance

Before you start making any travel plans, you will want to make sure to take care of all of the passport, VISA, and immunization requirements for your trip.   In addition, you will want to make sure you have a clear understanding of what languages they speak in Zimbabwe and what currency they use so that you can plan any translation needs you might have for your trip and exchange currency before your trip if necessary.  I have included some of this key information in my guide to Victoria Falls below for you to review as you start to make your travel plans.

Passport, VISA, Customs, and Immunization Requirements

good time to visit victoria falls

In order to assist you in navigating the legal requirements for visiting Zimbabwe, I have included a link to my Zimbabwe Passport, VISA, Customs, and Immunization Requirements Guide for you to review below.  This guide will give you all of the information that you will need to meet the VISA, passport, customs, and immunizations requirements and recommendations for visiting Zimbabwe.

I have also outlined all of the vaccination requirements and recommendations for travel to Zimbabwe in the guide below. You will want to be sure to review this section of the guide thoroughly to ensure your health is protected during your visit.

In addition to this passport, VISA, and immunization advice, I have also included links to supplemental guides that I have created on why I recommend getting the Rabies pre-exposure vaccination before traveling internationally and how to protect yourself from tick and mosquito-borne illnesses when traveling. Outside of taking care of the passport, visa, and immunization requirements so that you can get into Zimbabwe and don’t get sick, there is no more important pre-travel planning task than making sure you pack the right clothing and gear for your trip.  To help make sure you are properly packed and prepared, I have included links to some of my packing resources for you to review in my guide to Victoria Falls below.

Top Things to See and Do

Guide to Victoria Falls

While the top attraction that people visit Victoria Falls to see is undoubtedly the Falls itself, there are plenty of other incredible things to see and do in the Victoria Falls area. Whether you are visiting to see the falls and the area’s incredible landscapes, go on safari in the area’s many incredible wildlife parks and reserves, or just want to plan a relaxing stay, visiting Victoria Falls is certain to be an experience you will remember for a lifetime. In order to help ensure that you have all of the top sights on your itinerary, I have outlined the top ten things I would recommend seeing and doing while vising the city in my Guide to Victoria Falls below.

Visit Victoria Falls National Park

Guide to Victoria Falls

One of the best ways to view Victoria Falls from the Zimbabwe side is to visit the Victoria Falls National Park and walk the Victoria Falls footpath. In addition to offering a variety of different viewpoints of the falls from which to take photographs, the park is also home to the Dr. David Livingstone Statue.

While you aren’t able to get as close to the falls from the Zimbabwean side as you are from the Zambian side, the views of the falls from Zimbabwe are much prettier in my opinion because you get to see the largest parts of the waterfall. You have to pay to get into the park, so please be sure to check the official Victoria Falls National Park website for current rates before visiting.

Be aware, while large predators are rarely spotted inside Victoria Falls National Park, this is a wildlife park and wild animals do live there. Some of these animals can be dangerous to humans, so avoid being in the park before sunrise or after sunset. For information on which viewpoints to stop at during your visit, please refer to the map I have included in my guide to Victoria Falls below.

Guide to Victoria Falls - Dr. David Livingstone Statue

One of the ca n’t-miss spots to stop at within Victoria Falls National Park is the Dr. David Livingstone statue. If you aren’t familiar with who Livingstone was, this is a perfect way to get to know this infamous 19th-century British explorer a little better.

Livingstone was renowned for his explorations of Africa. Throughout his career, he made several trips to the continent to work as a missionary, explore the unknown interior of the continent, and most famously search for the source of the Nile River.

During one of his expeditions, he heard a roaring thunder in the distance and saw what he thought were plumes of smoke rising into the air. As he got closer, he became one of the first Westerners to ever set eyes on what he would later name Victoria Falls.

The waterfall was so huge and powerful that he nicknamed it “the smoke that thunders”. Today, the city of Livingstone, Zambia is named after Dr. David Livingstone and there are many monuments in his honor in the area. One of the most famous is this statue of him in Victoria Falls National Park.

Take a Cruise on the Zambezi River

Guide to Victoria Falls WIldlife

While seeing Victoria Falls from the foot trail within Victoria Falls National Park is undoubtedly the best way to experience and photograph the falls, there are many other adventures available for you to enjoy near the falls as well.

One such adventure that I recommend every traveler experience is a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River. You will be left speechless by the beauty of the river and the abundance of the incredible wildlife that lives both in and around it. There is a great chance you will see hippos or crocodiles in the river as you meander your way down this iconic river.

There is also a great chance you will see elephants, giraffes, and various species of antelope along the river’s banks, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled. Finally, there is nothing more beautiful than seeing the sun set over this breathtaking landscape from your comfortable spot aboard the boat. It is truly an experience you will remember forever.

Go on Safari in the Zambezi National Park

Guide to Victoria Falls Wildlife

While Victoria Falls is widely considered to be one of the most incredible landmarks in the world for good reason, there is a lot to see and do in the area outside of just visiting the Falls. One of the most popular activities that visitors enjoy during their visit is going on safari to see some of Africa’s most amazing wildlife.

I do strongly suggest that you plan enough time to explore some of the national parks and wildlife reserves outside of the Victoria Falls area. The most notable on this list would be Chobe National Park in Botswana and Hwange National Park to the South in Zimbabwe. However, if you don’t have a lot of time, that doesn’t mean you can’t go on a safari during your visit.

The incredible Zambezi National Park is located just outside of Victoria Falls and is home to four of Africa’s “Big Five” animals. This includes lions, cape buffalo, elephants, and leopards. If you are lucky, you might even spot the critically endangered African wild dogs. For more information on the Zambezi National Park, please check out the official Zimbabwe Parks website for details.

Go on Safari in the Livingstone Private Game Reserve

Guide to Victoria Falls Black Rhino at Stanley Livingstone Game Reserve

While the nearby Zambezi National Park is outstanding, it does not allow visitors the opportunity to see all of the “Big Five” animals of Africa. The one animal that you definitely won’t see when visiting is the rhinoceros. If seeing one of these beautiful creatures is on your bucket list, you are in luck.

The nearby Stanley Livingstone Private Game Reserve offers private safaris that give you a great chance of seeing the critically endangered southern black rhino. Unlike the national parks in Southern Africa, the private game reserves are privately owned and maintained. This creates additional conservation lands to help protect the beautiful wildlife.

If you would like more information, I would suggest checking out the Stanley Livingstone Private Game Reserve website . For those who would like to book a tour, there is a great Stanley Livingstone Private Game Reserve safari tour option available on Viator.com.

Go Rafting Down the Zambezi River

Guide to Victoria Falls White Water Rafting

For travelers who are looking for a little bit more adventure than just seeing Victoria Falls, there are many incredible adventure travel opportunities that you can try in the area. One of the most popular of these activities is to take a whitewater rafting tour down the Zambezi River.

Your heart will be pounding as your tour group navigates the rapids of the Zambezi River, which is certain to be an experience you remember for a lifetime. Not only is the rafting incredible, but the opportunity to spot elephants and other wildlife on the banks of the river is a bonus you won’t find on many other whitewater rafting tours in the world.

If you are interested in booking a whitewater rafting tour during your stay in the Victoria Falls area, please be sure to check out my Recommended Tours and Excursions section of this guide to Victoria Falls below.

Try Bungy Jumping

Guide to Victoria Falls Bungee Jumping

Another adventure opportunity that you can try while visiting Victoria Falls is to go bungee jumping into the Zambezi River Gorge. If you are an adrenaline junky that loves to bungee jump, I can’t think of many places more beautiful to try the sport than at the breathtaking Victoria Falls.

There are two locations in which you can jump in the Victoria Falls area. The first is the Shearwater Bungee Jump at the Victoria Falls Bridge . This 364-foot jump off of one of Africa’s most iconic bridges is certain to be an adventure you remember forever.

The second bungee location is the Wild Horizons Lookout Cafe Bungee Jump , in which you jump 364 feet from a platform on the side of the river gorge. Like the bridge jump, it is a truly breathtaking landscape in which to enjoy the sport!

Swim to the Edge of the Falls at Devil’s Pool

Guide to Victoria Falls Devil's Pool

Don’t get me wrong, you can get some absolutely spectacular views of Victoria Falls without getting wet. I have already outlined how the foot trail in the Victoria Falls National Park on the Zimbabwean side has some of the best viewpoints and the Knife Edge on the Zambian side lets you get very close to the edge of the Falls.

However, if you want to get some out-of-this-world views of Victoria Falls, there is no better way to do that than at Devil’s Pool. This strangely becalmed 10-foot feet natural pool with a rock lip makes it relatively safe to swim right up to the edge of the Falls and peer over.

There are tours you can book to visit Devil’s Pool, which involves swimming across the Zambezi River with a guide to Livingstone Island, where you can then access the pool. Obviously, swimming to the Devil’s Pool is only safe during the low-water periods during the dry season, so if this is something that you would like to do when you visit Victoria Falls, I would make sure to plan your visit between the months of June and December.

Devil’s Pool is on the Zambian side of the Falls, so if you are staying on the Zimbabwean side, you will need to cross over the Victoria Falls bridge and pay the VISA fee in order to take this tour. For more information on the Devil’s Pool tours available, please check out the Recommended Tours and Excursions section of this guide to Victoria Falls below.

Cross the Bridge Between Zimbabwe and Zambia

Guide to Victoria Falls Victoria Falls Bridge

Why see Victoria Falls from just one side when you can easily see it from both sides? This natural wonder of the world is unique because it sits on the natural border between the countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia.

While a majority of the Falls are located on the Zimbabwean side, there are some very unique and incredible viewing opportunities on the Zambian side as well. I have already covered the amazing foot trail in the Victoria Falls National Park in Zimbabwe, as well as the Knife Edge and Devil’s Pool in Zambia.

If you are staying in Victoria Falls and want to experience the Falls from Zambia or you are staying in Livingstone and want to see the Falls from Zimbabwe, going back and forth between the countries couldn’t be easier. You will need a VISA to cross between Zimbabwe and Zambia and then back, so you can either pay the $50 USD for a KAZA UniVisa at the border or pre-pay for your VISA by purchasing a Zimbabwe e-VISA and a Zambia e-VISA online ahead of time.

Take a Helicopter Ride Over the Falls

Guide to Victoria Falls Aerial View

While the views of Victoria Falls from the ground are spectacular, seeing this natural wonder of the world from the air is a whole different level of beauty. It is very hard to really appreciate the scale and the power of Victoria Falls unless you can see the Falls in their entirety.

The only way to do that is to get up in a helicopter and fly over it. For those travelers who are up for the adventure, you will be happy to know that there are helicopter tours available that will fly you over Victoria Falls.

In fact, on some tours, they also fly over the rest of Victoria Falls National Park, so you also have the opportunity to spot elephants, giraffes, and other wildlife from the air. It is a spectacular experience that you will never forget. For more information on Victoria Falls helicopter tours, please see the Recommended Tours and Excursions section of my guide to Victoria Falls below.

How to Get There

Guide to Victoria Falls Victoria Falls Airport

If you are planning on visiting Victoria Falls, there are several different ways that you can get there, depending on what else you are planning to see and do during your trip. If you are coming to the area primarily to visit the falls, the easiest way to get to Victoria Falls is to fly into the Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) , which is located just outside of the city.

You can also fly directly into the area by flying into the Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (LVI) on the Zambian side. For those who are planning on going on safari in Botswana and would like to take a side trip to visit the falls, you will probably be flying into the Kasane International Airport (BBK) in Botswana. You can then arrange a day tour to Victoria Falls from your lodge in Chobe National Park or the other wildlife parks and reserves in Botswana.

The same can be said for travelers who will be visiting Zimbabwe to go on safari in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. If you are planning on spending the majority of your time around Hwange, you may find it more convenient to fly into and out of the Hwange National Park Airport (HWN) and then arrange transportation to Victoria Falls for a day trip. For more information on where these parks and cities are located in relation to Victoria Falls, please see the map I have included in my guide to Victoria Falls below.

Guide to Victoria Falls - Victoria Falls Area Map

Choosing a Side to Visit

What many people who haven’t visited the area don’t realize is that Victoria Falls sits along the border between the countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia and can easily be visited from both countries. The good news is, you don’t need to choose between a side. You can easily pass between the Zimbabwean and Zambian sides of the falls by using the Victoria Falls bridge.

All you will need is your passport and a double\multiple entry VISA (which you will need to pay for at the border). Which side of the falls you choose to use as your base of operations will depend greatly on what else you plan on seeing and doing during your visit to the area.

The Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls has by far the best view of the falls. Three-quarters of the waterfall is in Zimbabwe, and the Victoria Falls National Park footpath offers a plethora of incredible viewpoints from which to view the falls.

You will actually feel the tremors of the falls thundering into the canyon below your feet as you wander thru the mist-filled rainforest along the path. This incredible footpath makes the Victoria Falls National Park in Zimbabwe an absolute must-see destination when in the area.

While the Zambian side of the falls may not offer as many good viewpoints, you are able to get much closer to the falls on the Zambian side. On the Zambian side, you are able to walk along paved paths at the edge of the waterfall and cross a stomach-turning Knife-Edge bridge that crosses over the falls. During high water season, the experience is absolutely exhilarating and terrifying at the same time.

And for those who are really adventurous, you are even able to swim up to the Devil’s Pool, which sits right at the precipice of the falls during low water season. From here, you can peek your head over the falls and into the canyon below. If you love adventure, it is hard to top this incredible travel experience!

For more information on what you can expect from each side of the falls, please refer to the summary of the Zimbabwe and Zambia side of Victoria Falls that I have included in my guide to Victoria Falls below.

Visiting the Falls from Zimbabwe Side

  • Incredible views of the main falls
  • You can see a majority of the water flowing over the falls at varying degrees of strength throughout the year
  • Most of the hotels are within walking distance of the falls
  • You are able to explore Victoria Falls town and its iconic market
  • Victoria Falls town is a classic tourist town with a wide assortment of restaurants and bars
  • The Victoria Falls Hotel, the most historic hotel in the Falls area, is on this side
  • See the critically endangered black rhino at Stanley Livingstone Private Game Reserve

Visiting the Falls from Zambia Side

  • Amazingly close waterfall viewing
  • The ability to swim to the fall’s edge at Devil’s Pool during the low-water season
  • You are able to visit Livingstone Island when water levels permit
  • There is a wide assortment of romantic river-side lodges
  • Incredible game viewing at Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park
  • The city of Livingstone isn’t as tourist-oriented and is mostly comprised of businesses

Best Time to Visit

Guide to Victoria Falls

One of the biggest decisions you will have to make when planning your trip to see Victoria Falls is the time of year you plan your visit. Not only will the time of year impact the type of weather can expect to have during your visit, but it will also have a big impact on what you can see and do at the falls.

Depending on the time of year, Victoria Falls will either look like a wall of raging water or several smaller waterfalls flowing into a large canyon. Victoria Falls is absolutely breathtaking at full capacity during the wet season, but it can also be fun to visit when the water levels aren’t as high as you can safely get closer to the falls. In this section of my guide to Victoria Falls, I outline what you can expect to see and safely do at Victoria Falls and what type of weather to expect throughout the year.

Average Temperature (°F)

The weather in Victoria Falls is typically very warm throughout the year, but it can get incredibly hot between late September and mid-December. During this time of year, daytime high temperatures can reach into the 90s (Fahrenheit) and it can feel much hotter in the sun. If you don’t do well with heat, you may want to avoid visiting during this time of year.

While temperatures can be much cooler during the winter period of late May thru early August, it can get rather cool at night. If you are planning to visit at this time of year, you will want to bring a light jacket with you to wear during the evenings.

Average Precipitation (Inches)

For those who are planning on going on safari while visiting, or have a lot of activities planned outdoors, you will also want to consider the average rainfall that Victoria Falls gets throughout the year. During the wet season, which lasts between late November and mid-March, the area gets quite a bit of rain.

However, during the winter months of May thru the beginning of September, the area sees very little rainfall. During this time of year, the wildlife is much easier to spot while on safari because there is less vegetation to obstruct your view. However, near the end of the dry season is when Victoria Falls is furthest from its peak volumes.

January to March

Guide to Victoria Falls

If you are looking for good travel deals, then January is likely your best time to visit Victoria Falls. Even though it is the height of summer, the water level of the Zambezi is still relatively low. This makes it not the ideal time to see the falls, but you can find some great rates on the luxury Victoria Falls lodges. This is also the ideal time to go whitewater rafting on the Zambezi River as water levels are starting to rise, but they aren’t near their peak.

If you want to see Victoria Falls reaching its maximum capacity, I would suggest waiting until late February. Without a doubt, this is the best time to view and photograph the falls. The waters of the Zambezi will be plummeting down into the gorges and the mist from the falls creates some of the most beautiful rainbows you will ever see.

However, February thru May is one of the worst times to go on safari in nearby Hwange National Park and the parks and game reserves of Botswana such as Chobe. The heavy rainfall from the previous months will mean lush vegetation in the parks, which makes spotting animals much more difficult.

By March, the water levels of the Zambezi and the volume of water going over the falls are at their apex. In fact, there is so much water going over the falls during this time of year that you can hear the waterfall from miles away. You can still go white water rafting during this time of year, but the high water levels of the Zambezi River can make it a terrifying experience if you aren’t an experienced rafter.

April to June

Guide to Victoria Falls

When the calendar hits April, summer comes to an end in Victoria Falls. With the end of summer, the temperatures start to drop a bit. With lower temperatures and water levels of the Zambezi River still relatively high, this is one of the best times to visit Victoria Falls. However, because of the high volumes of water flowing over the falls, the strong mist in the air can make it difficult to see the entirety of the falls. One of the best ways to get around this is to book a helicopter tour and view this iconic landmark from the air.

Starting in May, the dry season in Victoria Falls begins. This is when nighttime temperatures really start to drop, so make sure you pack a jacket and long pants if you decide to visit during this time of year. With very comfortable daytime temperatures, this is undoubtedly the best time of year to visit if you want to avoid the heat.

If you are planning on visiting Victoria Falls and the parks and game reserves of Botswana, including the infamous Chobe National Park, the best times of year to visit are from June to August. The dry season means there is less vegetation to obstruct your views of animals and the shrinking water holes mean the animals need to congregate near the Chobe River. This makes it much easier to find and spot wildlife. It is also a good time to visit Victoria Falls as well. Even though this is the start of the dry season, the volume of water flowing over the falls is still greater than it is at the end of the dry season.

July to September

Guide to Victoria Falls

Even though the month of July is in the middle of the dry season at Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River is no longer at full volume, it can still be a great time to visit the falls. For instance, this is the time of year when the infamous lunar rainbow makes its incredible appearance at Victoria Falls. The mild daytime temperatures also make daytime safaris at Hwange National Park and Chobe National Park much more enjoyable.

Starting in August, the temperatures in Victoria Falls start to increase again. This means that early morning and evening safaris in the surrounding parks aren’t quite as chilly. There is still very little rainfall, so it is a great time to see the falls, go on safari, and try some outdoor activities such as whitewater rafting or Devil’s Pool swim tour.

The month of September is the start of spring in Victoria Falls and is undoubtedly the best time of year to visit the falls if you are planning on going on a safari at one of the surrounding wildlife parks. The temperatures are not too warm, but they are warm enough to make early morning and evening safaris very enjoyable.

This is the month of the year when spotting difficult-to-see wildlife such as the elusive leopard is easiest because of the sparse vegetation. However, the later in September you visit, the dryer Victoria Falls will be. This is why I think late August and early September are the optimal times to visit when combining a visit to Victoria Falls with a safari experience.

October to December

Guide to Victoria Falls

In my opinion, one of the worst times of year to visit Victoria Falls in October. Not only is this the hottest month of the year, but the water level of the Zambezi River is at its lowest level. This means that the water flowing over Victoria Falls is at its least remarkable level.

The wet season officially kicks off again in November, and during this time of year, you can expect to see the first spring rains in Victoria Falls. However, don’t expect the water level of the Zambezi River to rise too quickly in November as it takes time for the rainfall to travel from the Angolan Highlands down to the river.

If you are into bird watching, November is the best time of year to spot many of the migratory birds that start arriving in Victoria Falls. There are some stunning bird species and this is one of the best times of year to spot them.

By December, it is nearing the height of the wet season in Victoria Falls. The daytime temperatures are still very hot and you can expect frequent afternoon thunderstorms. The water level of the Zambezi River is starting to rise and this is the last month for a while that you will be able to safely go whitewater rafting on the river. The migratory birds are also still around the falls thru December, so bird watching continues to be very good.

Where to Stay

Guide to Victoria Falls Hotels

One of the most important decisions you are going to have to make when planning your trip to see Victoria Falls is where you will stay.  When you travel, the accommodations you choose are oftentimes amongst the biggest expenditures for your trip.  So not only do you need to be comfortable where you are staying, but you also need to be comfortable with how much you are paying to stay there.

Finding the right accommodations for your trip involves looking at the amenities, the location, and most importantly, the price.  If you are starting to plan your trip to Zimbabwe and want some hotel and hostel suggestions, I have included some great options at different price points in my guide to Victoria Falls below for you to review.  As always, don’t be afraid to expand your search to room-sharing sites such as Airbnb or VRBO if you aren’t finding a hotel or hostel that meets your needs.

Where to Eat

Guide to Victoria Falls - Wild Horizons View Restaurant

When most people plan a trip, the primary focus is on how to get there, where to stay, and what is on the list of things to see and do.  What many travelers neglect to plan, is where to eat when they are there.  Granted, it is sometimes fun to be spontaneous when choosing a restaurant while traveling, and it is always smart to get recommendations when you arrive.

However, it can also be advantageous to have some ideas of restaurants you would like to try during your trip written down beforehand as well.  This way you can be assured that you won’t miss out on a highly recommended culinary experience that you will regret.  To help you decide on some restaurants in Victoria Falls to add to your list, I have included a list of some highly recommended options for you to review in my guide to Victoria Falls below.

Recommended Tours and Excursions

Guide to Victoria Falls - Whitewater Rafting

There is an abundance of amazing things to see and do in the Victoria Falls area and one of the best ways to experience those things is on a tour.  If you are looking for fun tours and excursions to fill out your trip, I have included some category links to recommended tours and excursions you can review in my guide to Victoria Falls below.

In addition to the plethora of wonderful tours and activities that I have linked to above, I would strongly recommend considering a safari while visiting the Victoria Falls area. Victoria Falls is situated in close proximity to a number of incredible national parks and wildlife reserves in Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Zambia.

Two parks that I would strongly recommend are Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, which is a few hours South of Victoria Falls, and Chobe National Park in Botswana, which is located just an hour to the West. For more information on how to plan a safari at these parks, including which tours to book, please see my detailed guides linked below.

Photo Gallery

One thing that Victoria Falls is not in short supply of is amazing things to photograph. I was able to capture a lot of great photographs while touring Victoria Falls, and I have included some of my favorites in a gallery in my guide to Victoria Falls for you to review below.

BEST TIME TO VISIT VICTORIA FALLS: Season By Season Guide

Victoria Falls is one for the bucket list. One of the seven natural wonders of the world, the world’s largest falling curtain of water , the adrenaline capital of Africa; must we go on? But, with so many opportunities on offer, it is important that you go at the perfect time of year for what you want to experience.

Victoria Falls has its seasons, as does every destination. It would suck if you came during high-season, wanting to take a dip in the daring and appropriately named, Devils Pool, but it was closed due to the water levels being too high! So, to all you adventurers out there wanting to see this natural splendour; this is for you! Let’s get one thing straight, Victoria Falls is HOT! One of the hottest places in all of Zimbabwe. So, if you are looking for an escape from the Northern Hemisphere winter, you are coming to the right place. There is no ‘best’ time to visit because each season offers something spectacular & unique to that particular season. Deciding when to visit this natural wonder is mostly up to what you want to do, while you are here.

If you are an adrenaline junkie, looking for a thrilling adventure, taking to the mighty Zambezi river, or even to the ultimate natural rock pool, right on the edge; the time is during the low season. But, if you are wanting to see the sheer power, force and magnificence of the Falls, high season is the time for you.

Check out our ultimate guide to discovering the Falls, at the perfect time, so you can get everything you could hope for out of your trip.

What is the best time to visit Victoria Falls Zimbabwe?

Victoria Fall and the best time to visit

High-Season

The high-water season is between March-May , just after the rainy season; when the falls have had time to fill up between November- February. The falls are now at their fullest and the volume of flowing water is outstanding. If you want to see the falls at their most dramatic, now is the time!

The days are hot and evenings warm. We are out of the extreme heat of September- December, but it’s not quite winter yet (more on a Victoria Falls winter to come.) The spray from the Falls is heavier and more extreme than you could ever imagine. During your rainforest walk, you will get totally soaked.

Now, we aren’t talking a small shower. The spray is more powerful than a high-pressure shower! There is no escaping these, but they make your rainforest experience totally unforgettable. Better yet, who else can say, “I have stood right in the spray of Victoria Falls?”

During this season, it is not uncommon for a short sharp thunderstorm to clear the heat momentarily, which creates an eye-catching sky!

So, if your ultimate wish is to see the falls in its total element, this is the time for you!

Best time to visit Victoria Falls

Best time to visit Victoria Falls – When is the best time to visit Victoria falls in Africa – When to go to Victoria falls

The best time to visit Victoria Falls is from  February to May , directly after the summer rains, when you’ll see the world’s largest sheet of falling water flowing at its greatest volume. The tricky thing about visiting Victoria Falls is that the most impressive spray doesn’t coincide with peak safari season in nearby Chobe in Botswana or Hwange in Zimbabwe. Some activities, like swimming in Devil’s Pool and certain sections of white-water rapids, are also far too dangerous to undertake when the water is at its highest and fastest.

We don’t recommend visiting Victoria Falls at the end of the dry winter season –  October  through  November  – when the water level is lowest, and the weather is very hot and humid. Low-water season guarantees you will have panoramic views (no misty spray) on both sides of Victoria Falls, but the Zambian side (about one-quarter of its width) may have dried up completely and all you’ll see is a bare rock face. Water flow on the Zimbabwean side is permanent but ebbs and flows in volume with the rainy season.

The best time to visit  Victoria Falls depends on how you would like to experience the falls and the surrounding area. It is a year-round destination, but every season brings something distinct to appreciate. Even when the water levels of the falls are low, you will have amazing panoramic views and the opportunity to spot numerous rainbows above and in the middle of the falls, as well as great conditions for activities such as white-water rafting.

The hottest months are September to November, with temperatures around 90-100°F. Between December and April, the weather is hot and humid with temperatures around 85 °F, and in the remaining months (May to August), you can expect approximately 75 °F. Overall, the peak season with the most visitors ranges from May to September.

From April to August, the Victoria Falls area receives very little rain, and the climate is mild. Temperatures are around 77-86°F (25-30°C) during the day. However, when it comes to the falls, “dry season” is an oxymoron, particularly in April and May, when the water levels are at their highest. Although the falls are extremely beautiful and at their most powerful during this time, visibility also becomes limited due to the spray and mist, and trails can be slippery and wet. Make sure you have proper rain gear if you visit during this period.

Between September and April, you can expect hot weather around Victoria Falls. The low water season between September and November is the ideal time to visit if you want to experience the falls on the  Zimbabwe  side and have visibility of the geological formations. This is only possible during and immediately after the tail end of the dry season since the falls have such low water levels during this period. It is also a great season for you if you want to go white water rafting, or on safari in nearby areas such as the  Chobe River.

In November, the annual rains begin and the landscape begins to transform into a lush green oasis. However, the volume of falls will not recover until the rainy season progresses further.

Best Time To Visit Victoria Falls in Zambia & Zimbabwe: Everything You Need To Know

good time to visit victoria falls

Visiting Victoria Falls in Zambia and Zimbabwe has to be one of the top activities in all of Africa.

This impressive waterfall is one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya , which means ‘the Smoke that Thunders’ in the local languages of Lozi or Kololo.

The first time I visited Victoria Falls, I heard the roar of the water (the ‘thunder’) crashing down into the gorge below and was covered in a fine mist (the ‘smoke’) before I even caught a glimpse of the falls themselves. I’d even see the mist rising into the sky as I flew into Livingstone airport.

It is, for sure, one of the most spectacular places to visit on earth. But to make sure you get the most out of your visit you need to make sure you go at the right time!

Best Time To Visit Victoria Falls in Zambia & Zimbabwe: Everything You Need To Know

Victoria Falls in Zambia

The Best Time of Year to Visit Victoria Falls

Whilst most people would be content with visiting Victoria Falls once, or maybe even twice, I’ve been to Victoria Falls ten times (I think). I’ve visited nine times by day, twice by night and at four different times of the year. Nine of those times were on the Zambian side and twice on the Zimbabwe side.

As the falls change dramatically with the seasons, each time has been a very different and profound experience and they never fail to blow me away.

  • April – Mid-November: This is the dry season. Around April/May, the falls are in full flow. The water levels then start to drop throughout the season. By November the falls are just a trickle on the Zambian side so you won’t see much water at all, so if you want to see gushing water, you’ll either have to go to the Zimbabwean side or take a trip to the Devil’s Pool.
  • Mid-November – March: This is the rainy season, when the river begins to fill back up again. By March the falls are bursting, so it’s hard to see them up close.

Check out the difference in appearance at different times of year…

Victoria Falls in May

Victoria Falls in May

The first time I went was in May when the falls were full to bursting. The rainy season, which runs from November to April, causes the river to swell, so visiting towards the end or just after this time, you will see Victoria Falls in all her magnificent glory.

The roaring of thunder hits you, long before you see any water. Even as you enter the park, a fine mist gently coats your skin and clothes. As you get closer, the spray gets stronger until you are completely soaked. A raincoat may be a good idea to take to keep you dry, you can also buy ponchos there.

There are a couple of downsides to visiting at this time of year though. The spray is so strong it’s difficult to get really close, especially to take photographs – so a waterproof camera or GoPro helps!

Then there’s rafting, sometimes the trips stop between March to May when the water level is too high. So if rafting is high on your priority list, go later in the year!

Victoria Falls in July

Victoria Falls in July

This is a great time to visit Victoria Falls. It’s still pretty full, and you will still get wet, but you can get some good pictures of the falls and the rainbows they create.

The water is also low enough, so all the rapids are open for rafting but the river isn’t completely wild yet! There’s usually no rainfall at all between May and August and nighttime can be really cold, so take warm clothing, especially if you are camping and likely to be spending lots of time outdoors.

This is also a good time to visit the Angel’s Pool (see below).

Victoria Falls in September

Victoria Falls in September

By September the weather is getting hotter and the falls, on the Zambian side at least, are almost dried up. In fact, you can walk the full length of the Zambian side of the trail without getting wet at all – a massive contrast to other times in the year.

Victoria Falls in November

Victoria Falls in November

By November, the water has pretty much dried up.

Whilst you don’t feel, see or hear the full force of the water, one thing you do get, is a chance to really appreciate the full magnitude of the gorge! Still pretty cool right?

However, the falls will still be flowing on the Zimbabwe side and you can get the the KAZA visa  (see below on how to get this visa) which allows you entry into Zimbabwe too, so you can pop over the border and get the best of both worlds.

During the dry season, you can take a trip to the Devil’s Pool (see below) and you can swim underneath the falls, something I did for the first time this year. This is also the best time for white water rafting – especially if you like your rivers pretty wild! A real adrenaline rush!

The Verdict?

It all depends on your preference and what activities you want to do, but any time of year is amazing and you won’t be disappointed I’m sure! My favourite time is between July and October.

Victoria Falls Zimbabwe in September

Which is Better? Victoria Falls in Zambia or Zimbabwe?

Victoria Falls sits right on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, so which side are they best viewed from?

  • During the dry season, the falls are best viewed from the Zimbabwe side, but then Zambia has the Devil’s Pool, which one of the best things to do at that time of year!
  • Zimbabwe tends to have the more ‘complete’ view of the falls, but the view from the Zambian side is also wonderful.
  • Vic Falls town is closer to the falls than Livingstone, but it’s only a short taxi ride away anyway.
  • Both places have nearby airports.

Many people say they are better from the Zimbabwe side, but I love Livingstone in Zambia as a place to stay.

Vic Falls is smaller and more touristy with more hotels and restaurants and is in the national park so animals wonder around town. But Livingstone is a bustling African town and a lot of fun.

Having now been to both, I prefer to stay on the Livingstone side.

The Overall Verdict?

Basically, both sides have their merits and are amazing! So I would maybe try and see them from both sides if you can and maybe also stay on both sides!

As mentioned above, you can get the KAZA visa which allows you to move back and forth between the two, so you don’t have to choose!

Angel's Pool, Zambia

How To Get to Victoria Falls

There are airports on both the Zambian and Zimbabwe side and both towns are well connected by bus to other cities in Southern Africa.

A taxi to Victoria Falls from Livingstone town costs around 60 ZMK or some hotels/guesthouses will provide a free shuttle bus.   Do not attempt to walk to the falls from Livingstone as the road is not safe – it’s busy, there are animals about and people have been robbed along this road.

From Vic Falls in Zimbabwe, you can easily walk to the falls from town, as it’s a lot closer on that side. A taxi from Vic Falls Backpackers was around $5.

View of Victoria Falls from the Zim Zam Bridge.

How to Get to the Zimbabwe Side from Zambia (and vice versa)

If you are coming from the Zambian side and want to visit the Zimbabwe side this is how you do it in a few easy steps:

  • Take a taxi or shuttle from your hotel in Livingstone to the border at Victoria Falls (the Zimbabwean side is much closer to the Falls so you should be able to walk from your hotel, depending on where you are staying).
  • Go to immigration and get your passport stamped to exit Zambia.
  • Walk through the gate.
  • Walk to the Zim Zam bridge, which takes approx. 10 minutes.
  • Walk across the bridge, admire the views and watch the bungee jumpers.
  • Walk to Zimbabwe immigration, which again, takes approx. 10 mins.
  • Go to immigration and get your passport stamped to enter Zimbabwe. Pay your visa fee if you don’t have one already.
  •  Walk through the gate.
  • The entrance to Victoria Falls Zimbabwe is a few hundred yards down on your right.

If you don’t want to walk across (it’s a 20 – 25 minute walk), you can get a taxi from just inside the gate after Zambian border control that can take you across the bridge and on to the Zimbabwe border. Then you can pick up taxis once you are through into Zimbabwe.

For info on visas, see below.

How To Get Your Zambia & Zimbabwe Visas

Most nationalities can get visas on arrival, however, it’s always best to check on the relevant government websites for Zambia and Zimbabwe to ensure that your passport is on the list! if it’s not, then you will need to apply for your visas in advance.

Some passport holders do not need visas at all.

KAZA UniVisa

If you are arriving at either Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (Lusaka, Zambia), Harry Mwaanga International Airport (Livingstone, Zambia), Harare International Airport (Zimbabwe), Victoria Falls International Airport (Zimbabwe), Kazungula Border (with Botswana), or the Victoria Falls Border (between Zambia/Zimbabwe) you can purchase the KAZA UniVisa*  which costs $50 and is valid for 30 days. This allows you to move freely between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Just be aware that if you leave Zambia or Zimbabwe (for instance to go on an overnight safari to Botswana), this visa becomes null and void, so you will need to buy another visa for re-entry. The ONLY exception to this, is if you take a day trip to Botswana.

*Update: They are now saying that the KAZA UniVisa is available at ALL ports of entry into Zambia and Zimbabwe. Even if this is true, I wouldn’t bank on them having them in stock, but by all means ask! Jessi, who runs some of my tours for me in Zambia, recently tried to get one from the Malawi/Zambia border but they didn’t have any. They once ran out of these visas (for months) so no-one could buy them and I believe this happens frequently! In fact, it happened to me last time I tried to cross in from Botswana to Zimbabwe. So bring extra dollars just in case. TIA.

Single or Double Entry Visas

If you are arriving overland from anywhere else (ie. coming from Malawi) and cannot get a KAZA Univisa or you don’t need one, here are your options:

  • Single Entry Visa to either Zambia ($50) Zimbabwe ($30*): This will just allow you into the one country, so you will not be able to leave and come back for free unless you go on a day trip to Botswana.
  • Double Entry Visa to either Zambia ($80) or Zimbabwe ($45*): This allows you to leave the country once (whichever one you bought the visa for) and return once. So if you buy a Zambian visa, go to Zimbabwe for the day or camp overnight in Botswana and then go back to Zambia, that’s it. No more free entries after that.
  • Single Entry Visa ($50/$30) + a KAZA UniVisa ($50): You should be able to buy the KAZA UniVisa either at the Kazungula Border when returning from Botswana or at the Victoria Falls border. Just be aware that once you buy the KAZA UniVisa, you have to stay within Zambia and Zimbabwe, so if you are planning on doing this, go to Botswana first, otherwise you void the KAZA UniVisa and end up having to pay again! If you can get the KAZA UniVisa, you may as well, as it’s the same price as single entry but gives you more freedom.
  • Transit Visa ($50): Zambia also has a transit visa option, but it costs the same as a single entry visa so I’m not sure why you would bother?
  • Day Tripper ($20): If you want to visit Zambia for a day from either Botswana or Zimbabwe, you can get a day tripper visa which might work out a little cheaper. Only available at the Kazungula and Victoria Falls borders.

*Please Note: For Zimbabwe, some people pay different fees for visas.  For instance, British and Irish passport holders pay $55 for a single entry and $70 for double entry. You can see the current prices and information here .

Multiple Entry Visas

These are only available in advance from the relevant consulate.

PLEASE NOTE: This is only intended as a guide as the rules can change at short notice so please keep an eye on the relevant government websites and do further research.

Rainbow at Victoria Falls

Visiting Victoria Falls – Info & Tips

  • As of May 2017, the cost of entry is $20pp in Zambia and $30pp in Zimbabwe. A guide is usually an extra $20, however you don’t really need a guide and it is fine to explore on your own.
  • If you want to bungee jump (or do the other extreme activities), you do not have to pay to enter the national park or for an additional visa. Simply head to the ZimZam bridge, go through customs, but tell them you are bungee jumping. they may just keep hold of your passport whilst you do it.
  • Beware the baboons. Baboons run wild and whilst they won’t usually come near you, or hurt you, they are opportunists and they can give you a nasty bite. So if you are swinging your bag, they may think there’s food in it and run off with it (I’ve seen it happen)! Once they realise there’s not, they’ll drop it – or throw it over a cliff. Bye bye camera! So keep your bags close to you, up off the floor. And to be safe… don’t bring any food with you.
  • If you’re visiting the lunar rainbow, take a torch, it’s very dark on the paths.
  • Wear steady shoes as it can get slippy.
  • If you’re visiting during high water, perhaps bring a raincoat and make sure you have a way of waterproofing your camera, either with a waterproof bag or a plastic bag, as you will get soaked!

Best Time To Visit Victoria Falls

  • Stories , Travel Advice
  • July 11, 2018

You’ll hear it first, Mosi-oa-Tunya or ‘The Smoke That Thunders’: light, deep reverberations that grow in volume as you edge closer to witness this immense natural phenomenon, and face a vast, soft cloud, shifting idly a few meters above ground.

After healthy summer rains, when Victoria Falls is at its most powerful, this cloud is ever present, fed by the waterfall itself. The sheer force of the world’s largest sheet of falling water propels waves of misty spray 400m into the air.

By the time you enter the mists, those light reverberations are replaced by the awe-inspiring roar. This immense sound of the falls, the heart-stopping views, and the almost-surreal beauty of glinting rainbows in the clouds of spray create multi-sensory, all-encompassing experiences. And deep respect for the massive power of this African natural wonder.

Victoria Falls is an all-year-round destination, a spectacular attraction no matter what time of year you visit. Many travelers will visit multiple times within a year, as certain seasons lend themselves to particular attractions. This is shown by the graphic below.

A breakdown of the seasons in Southern Africa, and how they affect various attractions around Victoria Falls

Traveling to Victoria Falls , the importance of when to visit

Victoria Falls is a truly spectacular attraction throughout the year, the surrounding African wilderness flourishes in Zambia and Zimbabwe’s warm climate, while the constant spray from the falls creates a rainforest type ecosystem. As with all things of nature, the falls and surrounding attractions evolve with the seasons, giving you varied and different experiences depending on the time of year you visit.

Immediately following the rainy season, Victoria Falls is at its most powerful. While out of peak safari season, the surrounding wilderness areas are lush and luminous-green, making for exciting game viewing (high contrast lion and other sightings as opposed to the more camouflaging ‘golden’ savanna hues in drier months), and stunning light and photographic opportunities. The high water-levels of the Zambezi River, which make the falls so powerful at this time, also limit certain activities. For example,  white water rafting  on the Zambezi River and  swimming in Devil’s Poo l from Livingstone Island are only safe, and offered, in low-water and mid-water seasons.

The Zambezi River

Summer/Wet Season (September → March)

During late Summer, you can expect hot, wet weather. Scorching midday African sun, deep pools of welcome shade from massive old riverine trees, post-lunch lazy siestas, and afternoon showers or deluges that refresh and reinvigorate. Then sparkling sunset-wilderness unfolding around you, as evening watering visits and preparations for wildlife night-time activities are revealed along with breath-taking sunsets and incredible, almost-theatrical lighting effects from the setting sun.

The late summers in this area, from December onwards, are characterised by large amounts of rain. For the most part, this falls during the latter half of summer, with short, but substantial afternoon thunderstorms. At the beginning of the summer (September to late November), before the big rains, the falls are at their lowest flows, but then steadily grow in strength as the rains feed the Zambezi River.

good time to visit victoria falls

Victoria falls flowing at full force. Water levels are high after much rain.

Each day, the hot African sun beats down on the savanna, heating everything, including the Zambezi. This makes swimming in Devil’s Pool, as well as various river activities, such as white water rafting, an absolute treat. However, deep into the wet season, from around February or March, once much rain has bloated the Zambezi, these activities become unsafe.

Game viewing once the rains begin, can be challenging as locating and spotting game becomes more exacting. Expert rangers and trackers are important, and the landscape is extraordinarily beautiful and varied during this time, from emerald grassy plains to intriguing massive baobabs and the mystical rainforest’s most striking African Ebony trees.

For a detailed, month-to-month breakdown of the Summer months, see the two subsequent sections…

Victoria Falls in September, October , November, and December (Start of Summer/Wet season)

This period starts with the end of the dry season. Before the first rains, which one can expect in late November, the air is hot and dry, with October generally recording the highest temperatures of the year, sometimes rising above 40°C (100°F).

During this time, water levels are at their lowest. Despite the first rains, it takes time for this water to make its way from the distant highlands, through a sophisticated network of rivers and gorges, into the mighty Zambezi River.

The rains bring with them great relief, as well as humidity. They transform this dusty landscape into a lush green savanna. After November, temperatures remain hot, but quickly become more bearable.

The low water levels guarantee panoramic views, unobstructed by spray. You will be witnessing the falls at its least powerful, but with much of its rock face exposed, this is a geologist’s dream. Although, if you wish to see the largest sheet of falling water, this is not the ideal time of the year, you may be left slightly disappointed. A helicopter flight over the falls, to compliment a walking tour, is still highly recommended. With an aerial view, you’re able to properly appreciate the extent of the falls.

good time to visit victoria falls

Victoria Falls after some rain, water levels are relatively low. Image by Andy Lowe.

With the water warming as Summer progresses, this is the perfect time for swimming and watersports, such as white water rafting. The lower water levels make these activities safe, allowing you to visit Livingston Island and swim in Devil’s Pool.

With hot days and warm river water, you may want to take after a hippo and cool off lounging with just your head above the surface. At the edge of the falls, Devil’s Pool is the perfect place for exactly this, with crystal clear river water flowing by before taking an almighty leap. Otherwise, if swimming near the edge doesn’t appeal to you, enjoy a dip at Matetsi Victoria Falls. With your own private plunge pool and the 20m lap pool, you are spoiled for choice.

Before the first rains, which usually arrive at the end of November, game viewing is incredible. It is the driest and dustiest time of year, which means thin and sparse vegetation. This makes spotting game much easier, as animals stand out against the sparse and barren landscape, rather than camouflaging amongst thick vegetation.

Furthermore, during this extremely dry season, animals are desperate for water. They congregate around water sources such as rivers and waterholes, making them easy to locate. At this time of year, the heat as well as the dry and dusty landscape can take some getting used to, but it’s worth it considering the incredible game viewing.

Finally, after many relentlessly dry months, the heavens open. Together the entire savanna embraces this new lease on life. Hear birds chirping, zebras braying, and the distant trumpet of an elephant. Some say that just after the first rains, if you listen really closely, you will hear a faint whisper – Toto’s voice “bless[ing] the rains down in Africa”.

However, don’t be so quick to celebrate with the rest of the savanna, the rain will have a distinctly negative effect on your game viewing experience. Wildlife is no longer forced to congregate around small water sources, rather spreading out over hundreds of kilometers. They are spoilt with an entire savanna of fresh vegetation and groundwater.

Although there is still a large amount of game to be found, it is no longer predictably concentrated around a few water sources, and therefore more difficult to locate. However, the new rains do give the savanna a new lease on life. Almost immediately after the first rain, the landscape undergoes an extraordinary transformation – from a brown dust-bowl to a lush grassland.

Not long after this green transformation, do the savanna’s expecting mothers give birth. The newly lush landscape will be teeming with the cutest youngsters, beginning to get a grip on life in an African grassland.

From January until the end of March (End of Summer/Rainy Season)

This is the height of the rainy season. It is very hot and humid, with temperatures often exceeding 32°C (90°F). Tropical afternoon thunderstorms are common, especially on particularly hot days. However, they pass quickly, conveniently making way for clear African sunsets.

However, beware that as the Summer rains feed the ever-swelling Zambezi River, your window to enjoy this body of water shrinks. The water level eventually becomes too high, making visiting Livingston Island, swimming in Devil’s Pool, and other watersports such as white water rafting unsafe. This usually occurs in February, so from then, you will have to stick to the swimming pool at your  luxury safari lodge .

By now, months of consistent rain will have brought about the Emerald Season, better known as the Green Season. It is the time of year when the savanna flourishes. Lush green grass spotted with blooming flowers, seasonal birds showing off their courtship plumage, and butterflies fluttering in the background of it all.

This is the time of year for photographers. The lush green savanna combines beautifully with the all-consuming African sky above. Photographers coming to this area are especially excitable following afternoon thunderstorms. They tend to clear just before sunset, leaving a magnificent palette of warm colours reflecting off the passing clouds.

good time to visit victoria falls

The Emerald/Green Season in full swing.

However, the Green Season also has a downside, less than ideal game viewing conditions. Although there is an abundance of game within the area, the thick vegetation during this time makes it difficult to spot game. Animals can easily stay out of sight behind the flourishing bushveld.

Furthermore, during the wet months, game is spread throughout these open-border reserves, making them more difficult to locate. This is because an abundance of groundwater means that animals have a choice of where to drink. They no longer congregate in such numbers around ever-flowing water sources, making their whereabouts predictable.

Victoria Falls Dry Season  / Winter (April → August)

It is slightly cooler during the Winter months, making the weather more manageable for some. Spend your days warm, basking in the African sunlight. Although it does become surprisingly cold at night, it is the dry season, so you do not have to worry about being cold and wet.

Although the slightly cooler weather does mean colder water, it does not become uncomfortably cold. This means, once the water levels drop around July, taking a dip at Devil’s Pool and activities such as white water rafting are open up for the season. The water levels depend on the seasons, and the amount of rainfall that year, so it’s best to check with the locals as to when the Zambezi River’s summer swelling to expected to subside. The water levels usually start to drop in April, once the majority of the Summer rains have made the leap over Victoria Falls. However, a couple months may pass before levels have dropped enough to enable access to Devil’s pool and the white-water rafting season to open.

good time to visit victoria falls

Devil’s Pool is submerged as the Summer rains make their way over the falls.

As far as game viewing is concerned, it gets better as the dry season takes hold. The lack of rain slowly thins out the vegetation, turning the once lush green paradise into a brown, more sparsely populated landscape. The sunbaked yellow landscape has it’s own beauty, especially in the golden hours before sunset. Furthermore, the more sparse vegetation makes game much easier to see

Furthermore, as the groundwater dries, wildlife congregate around ever-flowing water sources such as the Zambezi River and waterholes. This makes locating animals easier as their movements become more predictable.

For a detailed, month-to-month breakdown of the Winter months, see the two subsequent sections…

Victoria falls in April, May, and June  (Start of Winter/Dry Season)

A winter of sorts begins just after the last Summer rains. With days averaging around 26°C, and rain a rarity, you will remain comfortably warm.

The Zambezi River is visibly bloated and roaring at full velocity at the beginning of the dry season, with much of the summer rain still making its way down towards Victoria Falls. This is when the falls is at its most powerful. The great volume of water flowing over the waterfall’s edge is truly awe-inspiring, as might be expected from the world’s largest falling sheet of flowing water.

good time to visit victoria falls

Water levels are at their highest, creating a powerful spectacle.

The immense force of the falling water propels large columns of water vapour high above the waterfall edge. Although absolutely beautiful, this does affect visibility from certain viewpoints. Despite this, there are still excellent views from both the Zimbabwean and Zambian side of the falls.

Furthermore, this is the best time for a  helicopter tour . Experience the might of Victoria Falls from above, feel the power of The Smoke That Thunders.

good time to visit victoria falls

Victoria Falls from a helicopter. The largest sheet of flowing water at full force.

All in all, if a view of Victoria falls is what you are looking for, this is when you want to visit. The high water levels will make for the most spectacular viewing experience. Unfortunately, these high water levels also make swimming in Devil’s Pool and certain water sports too dangerous.

On the other hand, game viewing remains relatively difficult. This is because the savanna remains lush, groundwater plentiful, both surviving off summer rains. The thick vegetation makes it difficult to spot game, while the abundance of groundwater makes animals more difficult to locate. This is because they are not forced to congregate around ever-flowing water sources.

Visiting Victoria falls in July  and August (End of Winter/dry season)

Although the coldest time of the year, the end of winter remains a comfortably average high temperature of 26°C. It gets surprisingly cold at night, but as winter is the dry season, you do not have to worry about rain. You’ll want to pack layers, as chilly early mornings will find you wrapped up in beanies and scarfs. These will be discarded as the sun rises overhead, leaving you comfortably warm in a t-shirt will be more comfortable. However, keep your layers close as they will be again be needed once the sun starts to set.

By now, the summer rains have made their way past the falls, leaving a lower water level. This means a less powerful and impressive waterfall, but also minimal spray. It’s a trade-off, greater visibility for a less awe-inspiring spectacle.

Furthermore, a more gently flowing Zambezi River allows the attraction’s various water sports to recommence. Again one is able to swim in Devil’s Pool and float down the river on a white water raft.

Whitewater rafting down the Zambezi River.

On the other hand, this is prime Game viewing season. As the groundwater dries, herds are forced to flock towards ever-flowing water sources. The result,  a concentrated abundance of easily located game.

Furthermore, months without rain has left the savanna sparsely populated by thin vegetation, therefore making game easy to spot. Although the dry landscape is can be considered rather harsh, the concentration of game makes for a remarkable experience.

Victoria Falls is a fantastic all-year-round destination. No matter the season, this multifaceted attraction has something spectacular to offer.

The falls and surrounding attractions are, however, very different depending on what time of year/season you visit. Therefore, in order to maximize your time at Victoria Falls, acquaint yourself with her seasons and choose the season that suits you.

Victoria Falls: When Is The Best Time To Visit?

Advise for timing a visit based on our experience.

When is the Best Time to visit Victoria Falls?

When is the best time to visit Victoria Falls ?

That is a tricky question because it really depends on what you’re looking for.

For instance, if you want to see the falls at its most impressive, you’ll want to be here when it is flowing well. But if there’s too much water, then the experience could be adversely impacted with closures as well as visibility issues.

If you want to do more things and get closer to the falls, you’ll want to be here when the falls have low flow. However, the flow of the waterfall can’t be so low that there’s hardly a waterfall at all!

Of course, most of us like happy mediums and would prefer to come when you can get good pictures while also getting to do some of the excursions.

That said, it’s very difficult to make such timing decisions, especially since this isn’t exactly a place to make last minute plans and just show up.

Often times, you have to pick travel dates and cross your fingers for agreeable conditions. Indeed, there are numerous factors that come into play that are hard to predict, especially if you’re traveling from far and away.

Our Personal Experience

We happened to show up in May 2008 so we can somewhat speak from experience. We can also supplement our observations to extrapolate patterns for the rest of the year based on what locals have told us, on pre- and post-trip research, and some intuition.

So here’s the breakdown…

good time to visit victoria falls

As you can see from the photos on this page, our trip happened to be at a time when the Zambezi River was in very high flow.

From looking at the river flow data , our visit happened to be during a time when the river was in peak or near peak flow. This typically occurred around the April through May (and even early June) time frame.

Certainly under these conditions, the entire 1.7km width of the Victoria Falls basalt wall dropoff was full of water.

And while it’s tempting to think this would be the best time to experience the mighty waterfall, we actually found that most of the viewpoints were too misty to photograph effectively. Imagine what it would be like trying to take pictures in the midst of a torrential downpour!

We definitely had to be careful not to destroy our electronic equipment by exposing it in the rain for too long.

It was a good thing we brought our rain ponchos to not only keep ourselves somewhat dry but also to protect our sensitive electronics like that camera. There were even vendors renting out large ponchos.

Since the close-up viewpoints weren’t the best at this time of year, it did happen to be the time to see the waterfall from the air.

It was only then were we able to truly appreciate the falls’ grandeur, scale, magnitude, and sheer beauty. And do all this without mist overwhelming us.

Climate Patterns

As for the non-peak flow months, here’s what we can extrapolate.

The falls is said to be in its lowest flow around the October-December time frame.

Under this condition, the falls will likely to have been segmented into several smaller “strands” of water with much of the underlying basalt bedrock wall exposed.

Thus, the falls would probably lack its thunderous impact at this time. We’ve even read that sometimes large sections of the falls become dry due to some degree of water diversion for hydroelectricity on the Zambia side.

On the flip side, I’d imagine this would be the time to do some of the paid excursions that gets you real close with the waterfall. One such activity is the Devil’s Swimming Pool, which lets you swim right at the edge of the falls!

As for the transition seasons, perhaps the most popular and optimal time to visit Victoria Falls (at least regarding the combination of good views and best weather) would be around the July through September time frame.

The falls is said to be gradually in transition from a flooded state to a low flow state so you might have fewer problems than we did with the mist while still having an acceptable volume of water so as to not feel underwhelmed.

But with this being perhaps the best time to go, I’m sure the demand rises and thus the cost of accommodations and amenities as well as the crowds (though even this waterfall is relatively less visited compared to other goliath attractions like Iguazu Falls and Niagara Falls ) are probably at their worst.

good time to visit victoria falls

In any case, if we had to do it all over again, we’d probably come back around this time.

Finally, at around the January through March time frame is said to be the wet season. This is when the area is the hottest and muggiest, and thundershowers are more likely.

Like the peak season, the falls is in a transitional period, but it’s going from from low flow to high flow.

I’d imagine that with the exception of the unpredictability of the weather, you’d likely get good but not overwhelming flow like in the peak visitation months of late Summer.

More Photos From Our Late May 2008 Visit

Just to give you an idea of how our experience went when the Zambezi River was near or at peak flow, here are some more pictures taken from that late May 2008 visit.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Victoria Falls?

Destinations.

  • Victoria Falls
  • Travel Advice
  • Tours & Safaris
  • Accommodation

We recommend visiting Victoria Falls between May through to the end of September. June/July is mid-winter which in some parts of the country means that it can get very cold in the evening and early morning. Winter days though are generally beautiful with average temperatures of around 23° Celsius. October/November are extremely hot and dry months and the summer rains start in December through till March. It's generally still hot during the rainy season, but heavy and persistent rain can spoil one's holiday.

The water level of the Zambezi River varies remarkably throughout the year and this does affect some of the activities in Victoria Falls. The Victoria Falls region receives seasonal rainfall, and therefore the amount of water flowing over the Victoria Falls changes drastically.

The water level is at its lowest point around November each year. At this time of year the water falls mainly in the deeper section of the river on the Zimbabwean side of the Victoria Falls. During the low water season some areas of the Zambian side dry up completely leaving a gigantic crack of exposed bare rock in the earth. This may not be as spectacular as the Victoria Falls in full flood.

The water level is at its highest between April and May. During these months the Victoria Falls are a thundering wall of falling water and the spray from the falls can obscure the view.

So which time of year is best for Victoria Falls activities and to visit Victoria Falls? The real answer is all year round. During the dryer months between June and September you are more likely to spot wildlife in Victoria Falls, but during the wetter months, the Victoria Falls themselves are more impressive.

Any water based Victoria Falls Activities are best enjoyed when water levels are relatively lower with much calmer flow. Any air or land activity is best when water flow is in its full capacity precisely after the summer rains.

If you are among the thrill lovers, an adventure seeker and want to take on the mighty Zambezi River or looking forward to swim to the edge of the cliff then the Low Season should be your call.  And if you are the one wanting to see the Victoria Falls making its way down in its full velocity then the High Water Season should be your choice.

The amount of rainfall that this part of the planet receives keep varying year to year. Therefore, seek guidance from your Victoria Falls Travel Guide for avoiding disappointment.

However, both the High Water and Low Water seasons guarantees equal thrill and excitement to all its visitors.

Low water season falls between August to January and at its lowest in the month of October.

  • This provides for the perfect opportunity to view the falls. With lightest downfall of water, you can check out the geological features creating the falls to the bottom of the cliff where the downpour takes place.
  • Being the hottest time of the year in this part of Africa, you will experience lesser spray of water while taking a walk along the path of the neighbouring rainforests with lesser crowd.
  • Drier spells encourage Victoria Falls Safari as game viewing becomes easier due to drying up of water sources in most of the interior regions. Thinner vegetation also contributes towards wildlife spotting.

Major Attractions During Low-Water Season:

  • It provides for a perfect opportunity to undertake various water based activities like water rafting and bungee jumping.
  • Wonderful views of flowing water through the gorges from both the Zimbabwe and Zambian side.
  • A welcome time for Zambezi River boat cruises and chance to witness more animals on the shore for drinking water.
  • This is the only time to take a dip on top of the devil’s pool, Africa’s natural infinity pool. Nothing can come closer to watching the Falling waters from this angle of the Victoria Falls.
  • Definitely a suitable time for wildlife lovers to discover the hidden wildlife gem along with the mighty Victoria Falls as the backdrop!

February to July marks the high water season when the Zambezi River is in full flood and waterfall is the most ferocious which gains the higher momentum during March and April.

  • During high-water season, a dazzling cloud of mist can float high above the fall.
  • Most of the time you are expected to get drenched by water sprays at most of the points giving illusion of upward rain drops.
  • High water levels and faster current does not allow for water-based activities thus if you are looking forward to enjoy the falls in its full capacity and highest speed you have to forgo the water activities.
  • Excellent time to visualize the spectacular lunar rainbows form during full moon night when the moon light gets reflected and refracted by the mist formed from the water sprays.

Major Attractions During High-Water Season:

  • The best aerial views can be enjoyed and captured during this time.
  • Rainforest walks are soothing and relaxing giving the best experience of nature and its resources.
  • Extra-ordinary views of Victoria Falls with the highest volume of water making its way down into the gorges.

Make sure you are equipped enough to prevent yourself from getting wet. Ponchos or umbrellas are provided on rent or sale at both the sides of the Victoria Falls.

However our Victoria Falls Tour Packages include all those necessary things to give you a hassle free experience.

A perfect amalgamation of both the seasons, could be your pick. But with a warning, the month of January- February are peak rainy season. So your tour might get little interruption here and there due to rainfall and cloud coverage. However, this could be your favourite travel time if wanting to get some refreshing rain breaks from the scorching summers.

  • On the other hand, the time between June-August are peak winter time. The months are cooler, so a happy time for those not wanting to face the hot climate at the falls.
  • The water flow level remains between high and low, allowing water activities to take place comfortably.
  • The Victoria Falls are topped but meanwhile bottom of the falls is also visible quite clearly.
  • Considered as the Best Month To Visit The Victoria Falls .

Major Attractions During Medium-High Water Season:

  • Absolutely perfect time for adventure seekers who can enjoy water activities like white water rafting, kayaking, bungee jumping off the cliffs etc.
  • Magnificent views from either side of the falls.
  • Devil’s pool is open for visitors to explore.
  • Enjoy the beauty of both the seasons and what the place has in store to offer.
  • The town of Livingstone on the Zambian side is well accessible during this time.

In Victoria Falls, about 900 meters (3,000 feet) above sea level, the climate is sub-tropical, with mild, dry winters from mid-May to mid-August, and hot, muggy and rainy summers from mid-November to mid-March. Before the rainy season, between September and November, there is a hot period with temperatures easily reaching 35 °C (95 °F), and sometimes up to 40 °C (104 °F) but the humidity is low. October is the hottest month of the year. On the contrary, in winter, the weather is nice during the day, but the temperature at night may approach freezing (0 °C or 32 °F).

Here are the average Victoria Falls Temperatures .

The amount of sunshine in the Victoria Falls is very good from April to October, i.e. the dry season, while it is acceptable in the rainy season, when, between one shower and another, the sun shines.

Our Travelers Say

Icon

We travelled with Falcon Safaris in Zimbabwe and Botswana for 16 days. Falcon designed a wonderful trip with private guide to the most interesting sites in both countries. The organization of the whole trip was excellent, flights within the country, accommodation and activites. The guides were very knowledgable and told us a lot about the countries, their history, people, economy and much more. We visited the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, the Victoria Falls and a number of national parks in both countries. Rhino tracking was a real adventure! We had tremendous further game drives and saw very many animals - we did the Big Five. We had much more activities than planned and enjoyed very much.We strongly recommend Falcon Safaris to everyone planning a trip to Southern Africa and East Africa.

Wonderful trip to Zimbabwe and Botswana with excellent organization and very competent guides

Our Consultant Vimbai was very helpful and accommodating. We stayed at the Elephant hills hotel which was nothing short of amazing. Our activities included a helicopter flight, dinner cruise as well as a morning game drive. All the activities were absolutely amazing.

Exceptional!

We worked with Gertrude to schedule and organize everything and she did an excellent job. I asked a lot of questions via e-mail and she answered everyone in a timely helpful manner. Our guide at Victoria Falls was also great. He met us at the airport, provided a thoughtful tour of the Falls and got us to our next guide in Botswana. Our lodgings at River View Lodge were just as described- very comfortable and excellent food. All the staff were so pleasant and helpful. If I had to do it again I would arrange a morning boat ride as well. We only did the sunset boat rides and they were the high point of our entire trip- we saw so many animals and our guide was very knowledgeable. Just a great experience. Our lodgings at Oddball's Enclave was rustic and we loved it. So great to disconnect from the world for a bit. Leo, our guide, was the best - got us out and about, saw fantastic wildlife and got back to camp safely each time. Doc manages the camp so well. This whole trip was planned and organized by Falcon Safaris and we could not have been happier.

Fabulous, well planned trip

Falcon safaris have given my the correct advice with excellent service. The only suggestion will be to work closer with the lodges to confirm bookings as soon as possible. We have booked and pay our deposit a year in advance. We have only receive our final convermation from Chobe Safari lodge a week before departure. I do realize its not within your controle but with limit alternatives and a group of 14 people it becomes an issue to find alternative accomodation if the booking was cancelled.

Best Time To Visit Victoria Falls

The best time to visit Victoria Falls depends on the country you visit and the time of the year, there is a variety of Victoria Falls activities, viewing points , and costs to visit Victoria Falls .

The combination of its height and width creates a massive single sheet of flowing water. This makes it the largest waterfall in the world. Victoria Falls is the name given to both the small town in western Zimbabwe as well as the magnificent waterfall. The large cascading body of water is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and a true marvel to witness.

You’d imagine that looking on at such an awesome sight would be a difficult task to achieve. However, there are plenty of ways to experience the marvel first-hand. With Mango flight specials and other epic travel deals, visiting Victoria Falls has never been easier.

All that’s left to do now is to decide when you want to go – and which side of the waterfall you want to be.

Best Time To Visit Victoria Falls

Discover Victoria Falls

Local people call Victoria Falls “Mosi-oa-Tunya” which translates into “the smoke that thunders”. The iconic spectacle is a special sight (and site) for both locals and international travelers alike.

What is Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is a waterfall on the Zambezi River in Southern Africa. It is considered to be the world’s largest waterfall due to its width of 1,708 meters. The noise of Victoria Falls can be heard from a distance of 40 km, while the spray and mist from the falling water are rising to a height of over 400 meters and can be seen from a distance of 50 km.

Where is Victoria Falls

The town of Victoria Falls lies in western Zimbabwe. The Zambezi River runs through the town and forms the boundary between Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as the catchment of the famed Victoria Falls. If you plan to visit from the Zimbabwe side, then you’ll access the falls from Victoria Falls National Park.

Another option is to visit from neighboring country Zambia , in which case you can gain entry to the falls from Zambezi National Park. Both sides have their unique selling points. For example, Zimbabwe’s view is historically preferred, the water flows all year round, and most hotels are within walking distance of the falls.

On the other hand, visiting the Zambian side gives you an opportunity to get closer to the falls. You can also swim in Devil’s Pool (during low season) and visit Livingstone Island.

How to get to Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is accessible from Zimbabwe or Zambia by plane , train, or car. Due to the volatile political situation in Zimbabwe, most travelers choose to stay in Zambia and sometimes visit both sides. There is a border post that you can easily cross with a UniVisa that allows access to both countries.

From South Africa, you can fly directly to Livingstone in Zimbabwe or Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in the capital city of Zambia – Lusaka. Livingstone is 290 miles (470 km).

Victoria Falls in Zambia vs. Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe

  • Zimbabwe has a great choice of accommodation close to the falls.
  • Zambia has some incredible riverfront lodges along the Zambezi.
  • The Devil’s Pool is only accessible from Zambia.
  • On the Zimbabwe side, the falls flow all year round.
  • Zambia’s falls dry up around October / November.
  • Zimbabwe has more viewpoints, including the Main Falls

Facts about Victoria Falls

  • Victoria Falls is known to locals as Mosi-ao-Tunya which translates to the smoke that thunders.
  • David Livingstone was the first European to find the waterfall in 1855 and he re-named the falls in honor of Queen Victoria.
  • The waterfall lies on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia in the heart of Southern Africa.
  • The waterfall is 1,708 meters wide and 108 meters high (one and a half times wider than Niagra Falls and twice as high.)
  • Without the Zambezi River, Victoria Falls simply wouldn’t exist. The falls are part of the Zambezi’s 2,574km stretch and they lie almost exactly halfway along with it.
  • The Zambezi River makes its way east from the falls across six countries and then out to the Indian Ocean.
  • South Africans don’t need a visa to visit both Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • Citizens from Australia, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and these 60 countries, qualify for a UniVisa on arrival to visit both countries for $50 (USD).

Victoria Falls Weather

When discussing the climate at Victoria Falls , locals refer to two main seasons – wet and dry season. The area experiences a tropical climate and follows a summer rainfall pattern. The temperatures get very high during the traditional summer season (September to April) and remain comfortably moderate during the winter (May to August).

The dry season occurs during the winter months. During this time, the water levels are low, and certain activities are made available to those daring enough to try, such a swim in Devil’s Pools. Victoria Falls experiences wet season during summer when the river is full and the waterfall is particularly powerful. If your reason for traveling to Victoria Falls is to see the beauty of the natural wonder, then this is when you’ll see the large sheets of water flowing at their fullest.

How High is Victoria Falls?

Did you know that Victoria Falls also provides a natural habitat for several unique species of plants and animals? This is easier to believe once you realize how large the waterfall truly is.

Although Victoria Falls is neither the widest nor the highest waterfall in the world, it is considered the largest. This is based on its combined width of 1,708 meters and its height of 108 meters. Seeing the spectacle in person is rather unbelievable!

Best Time To See Victoria Falls

Best Time To See Victoria Falls

The best time to go to Victoria Falls depends largely on what activities you plan to partake in. Although the waterfall is most awe-inspiring during the rainy season, the dry season has its perks too.

Heavy rains and flood conditions sometimes occur in January and February. The Falls are at their most spectacular between February and May when the Zambezi River is at its annual peak flooding time. The dry season generally runs from May to October through the southern fall (Autumn).

I don’t recommend visiting the Falls at the end of the dry winter period (October – December). This is when the water level is lowest and the weather is very hot and humid. However, you can safely enjoy a swim in the Devil’s Pool during this time, or walk to the bottom of the First Gorge at the Zimbabwean side.

Visiting During Rainy Season

The rainy season is considered the best time to visit for viewing pleasure. The Zambezi River reaches its annual peak flooding between February until May. During this time you can expect torrential downpours and storms. As the river is full and the falls are gushing, certain activities are not permitted. Livingstone Island Devil’s Pool access closes around January and remains closed until August.

As the spray of the falls is particularly strong during this time, ground access is very difficult. However, these are the best months for aerial viewing. Keep your camera charged (and waterproofed) to snap pictures of the powerful falls. Keep in mind that the rains bring mosquitos. It’s important to take malaria precautions when visiting Victoria Falls during this time.

Visiting During Victoria Falls Dry Season

If you’re an adventure junkie or want to experience the different activities around Victoria Falls, then the dry season would be your best bet. The ideal time for rafting is from August to December. Feel the rush of adrenaline as you navigate the white water of the Zambezi. The water levels are not flooding but manageable and fun.

Devil’s Pool and Livingstone Island are also made accessible during the dry season from August until March. This is a great way to experience the natural wonder.

Another key consideration is whether or not you plan on enjoying the game viewing opportunities around Victoria Falls. Both Zimbabwe and Zambia have fantastic safari opportunities which are best enjoyed in the dry season as the animals are easier to spot.

However, if it’s the view of the great falls that you’re after, then avoid visiting in November (and early December) as the rock face can be quite dry.

Best Time To Visit Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls Activities

There are many Victoria Falls Activities listed on many Southern African travelers’ bucket list adventures, the falls are a one of a kind natural wonder of the world.

Bungee Jumping

Victoria Falls Activities

The Victoria Falls Bridge is home to one of the world’s most scenic bungee jumps at a height of 111 meters (364 ft). Voted as one of the World’s Top 5 best bungee jumping experiences.

Helicopter tour of the Falls

The helicopter tour offers outstanding views and a breathtaking experience every time!

Swim in the Devils Pool (Zambia Side)

Victoria Falls Activities

From September to December the flow of the Zambezi lessens and water levels drop. This allows daredevils to swim to the very edge of Victoria Falls in a naturally formed pool and look down into the chasm below. The pool is made by a rock wall that halts the current enough for a swim; it is ominously named ‘Devil’s Pool.’

Swimming isn’t recommended if you aren’t confident in your swimming abilities.

Because of the danger of hanging off the edge of a waterfall, access is limited to certain months of the year (when it is deemed safe with low water levels) and daily visitors as restricted to 12 at each time, with a maximum of 80 people per day. As it is located in Zambia, it will require you to take a day trips across the border to visit if you are staying in Zimbabwe.

Canoe Safari on Zambezi River

If you fancy taking a day trip from Victoria Falls, the Lower Zambezi National Park is easy to reach from the Zambia side of the falls and is where you can choose to take a boat safari, there are different options like a speedboat or canoe. I’d prefer a normal boat that simply floats while you keep your eyes peeled for the wildlife on the riverbanks.

White Water Rafting

The use of an inflatable raft to navigate a river or other body of water. This is often done on white water or different degrees of rough water. At least two people are needed for this activity.

Visiting Southern African and not going on safari would be a waste. For the best game viewing in Zambia, head to Lower Zambezi National Park and consider staying in a bush camp retreat as I did. If you’re in Zimbabwe, visit Hwange National Park – the perfect option for those with time on their hands, located as it is 100km south of the Falls. Alternatively, the wildlife-packed Chobe National Park in neighboring Botswana is just an hour’s drive from Vic Falls.

Sunset Cruise on the Zambezi

Sunset cruises are the perfect way to relax after a day filled with Victoria Falls Activities.

There are many options for accommodation around the Victoria Falls area. With lodging options like hotels , hostels, backpackers , campsites, guesthouses, and resorts, you’ll be spoilt for choices for a variety of budgets and tastes.

Final Thoughts On When To Visit Victoria Falls

The best time to visit the falls will depend on what you hope to achieve. If you want to experience a combination of fantastic sightings and fun activities in Victoria Falls , then your mid-seasons will be best. Victoria Falls in December is great for rafting, and a trip between February and May is the best for the view. While your experience will largely depend on when you go and what activities you sign up for, there are a few guarantees… Expect to be blown away by the beauty of the falls, get close to nature, marvel at painted sunsets, and enjoy the friendly hospitality of the locals. Visiting Victoria Falls is an unforgettable experience and one that needs to be seen to be believed

5 Best Things You Can Do At The Victoria Falls

W hen explorer and missionary David Livingstone first reached the Victoria Falls, he wrote, “The most wonderful sight I had witnessed in Africa… No one can imagine the beauty of the view… Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.”

He might have written those words way back in 1855, but not much has changed. Victoria Falls is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited destinations on the African continent.

Let’s have a look at the best things to do on your visit.

1. The Victoria Falls

The Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River, with Zimbabwe on one side and Zambia on the other, is the largest sheet of falling water on the planet — 5,604 feet wide and 354 feet tall.

Take a stroll down meandering footpaths, through the rainforest, and out to spectacular viewpoints with eye-level views of the falls as they thunder and tumble over the edge, plummeting into the rocky chasm below. With 16 viewpoints, the network of paths allows you to see the falls from every angle.

If budget is no obstacle, I’d also recommend a helicopter flight over the falls, known as Flight Of Angels .

Pro Tip: How wet you’ll get depends on what time of year you visit. Wear quick-drying clothes and flip-flops, and take a light rain jacket with you, or rent a poncho; they’ll also protect your camera.

2. The Victoria Falls Bridge

Hovering 420 feet above the Zambezi River, the 650-foot-long steel bridge — which opened in 1905 — spans an enormous chasm over the water, giving visitors spectacular views of the falls and the river below. You can walk across the bridge or take the Bamba Tram for a 1.5-hour ride right onto the bridge. To get your heart beating, try bungee jumping off the bridge. It’s undoubtedly the most scenic bungee jump in the world — 364 feet of free-fall and 4 seconds of pure adrenalin! If you can’t quite face a bungee jump, then try a bridge swing or the not-so-scary bridge slide .

3. The Zambezi River

Rafting, canoeing, and sunset cruising.

Once you’ve had your fill of looking at the falls or jumping off the bridge, don a life jacket and helmet and head for the Zambezi River — the fourth-longest river in Africa. White-water rafting on the Zambezi, below the falls, is considered to be some of the best and biggest grade-five waters in the world. You’re sure to flip and swim several times.

Still looking to get your heart pumping after that? Head down to the Boiling Pot, right beneath the falls, where you can speed through some of the rapids on a jet boat . Much heavier than a raft, the jet boat won’t flip, but you’ll still get the thrills.

Upstream from the falls, spend some time canoeing , or take a leisurely breakfast, lunch, sunset, or dinner cruise .

4. Victoria Falls Town

The bustling, small town of Victoria Falls, commonly referred to as Vic Falls, revolves around tourists. Its neat streets are lined with various accommodation options, cafés, bars, shops, and colorful local markets. The town is perfect for keeping visitors occupied when they’re not doing one of the exhilarating activities for which the town is renowned. The falls themselves are just a mile from the center of town. It’s easy to get around and pretty much everything is within walking distance.

Pop into the Lookout Café for amazing views over the Batoka Gorge and the Zambezi River. For something more sedate and stylish, head to the Victoria Falls Hotel for high tea on the Stanley Terrace and amazing views of the Victoria Falls Bridge.

5. The Wildlife

Located upstream from the Victoria Falls, 3 miles from town, is the Zambezi National Park. It’s home to elephants, lions, buffalo, the occasional leopard, and herds of zebras and giraffes — perfect for a classic game-viewing experience. Small but scenic, it’s well worth a visit. Spend some time on a game drive, game walk, or bird-watching tour .

Don’t miss the daily opportunity to witness hundreds of vultures swooping down and feeding on meat scraps and bones at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge (bonus: it’s free!). Alternatively, just out of town, immerse yourself in the world of elephants at Through the Eye of an Elephant .

Victoria Falls is a fantastic year-round destination, but like almost everything else in Africa, your experience is dependent on rainfall. The time of year you choose to travel will have a massive impact on your visit. As a general rule, March–August has the best views of the falls; July–September is best for adding in a safari; and October–November, when the water level is low, is the best time for river activities.

Where To Stay

Shearwater Explorers Village offers accommodation from serviced tents to deluxe rooms and is close to the falls. 528 Victoria Falls is a boutique guest house with Insta-worthy décor. Victoria Falls Hotel is the oldest hotel in Zimbabwe and a luxury icon. Victoria Falls Safari Lodge is great for families.
