Edmunds' Expert Review

  • Versatile rear seating configurations
  • welcoming cabin
  • capable handling.
  • Ride not as smooth as rivals', limited driver legroom
  • only seven seats
  • engine lacks refinement.

For 2012, the Dodge Grand Caravan lineup receives revised trim levels, including a new, lower-cost base model dubbed the American Value Package.

Edmunds says

Although the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan offers a low starting price and clever passenger- and cargo-carrying functionality, it still trails the competition in terms of overall refinement.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan American Value Package 4dr Minivan (3.6L 6cyl 6A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Vehicle overview.

At its debut back in 1984, the Dodge Caravan introduced American families to a new, extremely space-efficient vehicle: the minivan. The larger, "Grand" version debuted a few years later. It was a huge hit that remained a strong seller through the years, despite rivals that sprouted like so many dandelions on a suburban lawn. The 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan isn't the dominator it was so many years ago, but it's also much improved compared to past DGC iterations.

Dodge refreshed the Grand Caravan last year to bring about increases in engine performance, fuel economy, driving dynamics and cabin quality. Specifically, the V6 provides class-leading power along with decent fuel economy, the handling is fairly agile for such a big vehicle and the cabin boasts not only solid materials quality but also the clever Stow 'n Go feature that allows both the second- and third-row seats to fold flat into the floor.

Nevertheless, the Grand Caravan still finds itself in an uphill battle against a couple of very tough competitors. Lined up tire-to-tire against the Honda Odyssey , Nissan Quest and Toyota Sienna , the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan (and its Chrysler Town & Country twin) comes up a bit short in terms of engine refinement, ride quality and passenger comfort, even though the Dodge has the advantage in all-out cargo-carrying ease thanks to those Stow n' Go second-row seats. As such, unless you plan to frequently switch your minivan from people mover to cargo van, we suggest cross-shopping the competition.

Performance & mpg

All 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan models are powered by a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

In Edmunds testing, the 2012 Grand Caravan accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 8 seconds -- average for a minivan. Fuel mileage estimates stand at 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined.

Standard safety features for the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan include active front head restraints, driver knee airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, front-seat side airbags, antilock disc brakes, stability control and traction control. Optional features include a blind-spot monitoring system, rear parking and cross-traffic sensors, and a rearview camera.

In Edmunds brake testing, a Grand Caravan Crew came to a stop from 60 mph in 130 feet -- an average distance for a minivan. The R/T with its better brakes stops in a strong 119 feet. In government crash testing, the Grand Caravan was given an overall score of four out of five stars, with four stars for overall frontal-impact and five stars for overall side-impact testing. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the Dodge Grand Caravan was awarded the highest possible rating of "Good" in the frontal-offset and side crash tests.

In terms of acceleration and handling, the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan is a contender. But segment leaders like the Odyssey and Sienna are still steps ahead as they boast greater refinement in terms of powertrain performance and overall ride quality, both of which are smoother than the Grand Caravan's. For example, the Dodge's responsive six-speed automatic transmission does an admirable job of keeping power on tap, but sometimes its gearchanges can be jarring. The steering is slightly heavier and the suspension is a bit less compliant compared to its competition.

The Grand Caravan's interior features quality materials and solid build quality that make it equal to -- if not better than -- rivals such as the Sienna. There is a total seating capacity of seven, which is in contrast to the eight possible in the Odyssey and Sienna. In terms of comfort, the front seats are supportive, but even drivers of average height have noted that the driver seat doesn't slide far enough rearward. The bottom cushions of the second-row seats are somewhat low to the floor, but they are tilted back slightly to make the seating position comfortable for passengers with long legs. The third row is tilted even farther back, which may make it a bit strange for children and smaller adults. Taller adults may find limited headroom back there.

Unlike other minivans that require the removal of the middle row of seats to achieve maximum cargo capacity, the Grand Caravan benefits from its Stow 'n Go second-row seats that fold flat into the floor. Operating these seats is fairly simple -- only a quick tug of a strap and a few gentle yanks are required to make them disappear into the floor. The third-row seats fold into a deep cargo well, but require several more steps to transform. Luggage space behind the rear seats is a generous 33 cubic feet. Stowing all seats opens up 143.8 cubes, comparable to other minivans.

2012 Dodge Grand Caravan models

The 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan is a minivan that can seat up to seven passengers. It is offered in five trim levels: American Value Package (AVP), SE, SXT, Crew and R/T.

The AVP comes with 16-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors, power front windows, dual-zone air-conditioning, second-row Stow 'n Go bucket seats, a conversation mirror and a four-speaker audio system with a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack and steering-wheel-mounted controls.

The SE adds body-color door handles/side molding, tinted rear windows, triple-zone climate control (with rear air-conditioning), a front floor console, floor mats and a six-speaker audio system. The optional SE Plus group includes alloy wheels, body-color mirrors and front/rear power windows. The available UConnect group includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel/shift knob, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, satellite radio and an iPod/USB audio interface.

The SXT is essentially an SE with the SE Plus group. But the SXT offers more in the way of options, such as a power liftgate, power sliding doors, power-adjustable pedals, remote start and a rear DVD entertainment system.

Stepping up to the Crew trim level gets you foglights, a roof rack, chrome body-side accents, power sliding doors, tri-zone automatic climate control, a larger center console, an overhead console, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power driver seat, power-adjustable pedals, a trip computer, a 115-volt power outlet, a touchscreen display and an upgraded audio system with satellite radio and digital music storage. Optional is a Media Center package that includes the upgraded audio along with a larger display screen, a back-up camera and a navigation system with real-time traffic and weather.

The sporty R/T lies at the top of the DGC lineup with 17-inch alloy wheels, a body-color grille, performance-tuned suspension and brakes, leather first- and second-row seats, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, a back-up camera and a premium Infinity sound system.

Various other option highlights (some depending on trim level) include automatic headlights, automatic wipers, running boards, a trailer tow package, rear parking and cross-traffic sensors, a blind-spot warning system, second- and third-row sunshades, heated second-row seats and a heated steering wheel.

Your Comprehensive Guide for the 62TE Transmission

The 62TE six-speed automatic was launched in 2007 with the 3.5 liter V6 on the Sebring and Avenger, and with the 4.0 liter Pacifica. It then rolled into minivans including the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country. With some case modifications from 2010 to 2011 updates were completed to help with the durability of the 62TE platform. This transmission is now used in the Ram Promasters cargo vans and rated for a higher payload.

Here is some information to help you get to know the 62TE Transmission better.

62TE Transmission Specifications

  • Weight 400 pounds
  • Ships in plastic pod
  • Software: Transmission always needs to be reflashed after repair/overhaul.
  • Park/Neutral min 70psi / max 135psi
  • Drive: min 70psi / max 180psi
  • Reverse: min 230psi / max 260psi
  • Oil specifications: Dry fill 8.5 Ltr Refill 5.5 Ltr Fluid specifications: ATF 4+
  • Normal Usage - Every 100,000 miles (160 000 km)
  • Severe Usage (fluid and filter) - 48,000 miles (77 000 km)

Checking the Transmission Fluid

Checking the fluid level of 62TE

The 62TE does not come with a dipstick, but one can still check the fluid level by taking the cap off the dipstick tube; the cap can be re-used or a replacement cap can be purchase. We suggest using a length of the flexible speedometer cable while listening for a light "thunk" as it hits the pan pottem. There is also a tool for finding the fluid level which can be purchased at the dealer or most parts stores.

The 62TE transmission requires Chrysler made ATF+4 synthetic type 9602 fluid for proper operation of the internal components. Problems have been known to arise in the transmission when too much, too little, or wrong transmission fluid are used. Therefore, Chrysler advises to take the vehicle to the dealership when transmission maintenance is due.

About the Automatic Transaxle

The 62TE six-speed automatic transaxle was based on Chrysler’s existing four speed automatic with two new primary gear ratios and a secondary ratio for passing at highway speeds. The first gear ratio was much lower, to increase standing-start acceleration; and the differential was beefed up to handle more power.

The two extra gear ratios were added by replacing the transfer shaft with a compounder.

Smaller steps between ratios helped smooth shifting, as the engine speed doesn't change as greatly with each shift, while the wider range allowed both quicker acceleration and better mileage at highway speeds.

The 62TE's second gear was a considerable distance from first, and all other gears were fairly close together. The fifth gear was a 1:1 ratio; the overdrive gear was similar to the four speed.

2013 Chrysler 200 62TE transmission

Common Issues with the 62TE

Slipping, Erratic Shifting, Harsh Forward or Reverse Gear Engagement: Some of the most common 62TE transmission problems are slipping between gears, erratic up or down shifts, or a hard slam when the 62TE transmission engages Drive or Reverse. Design flaws account for numerous problems in the transmission. Any one of these could be causing the symptoms.

Engine stalls while in drive or during coast down - 62TE transmission

Problem: Drivers may notice an engine stall when they place the gear selector into drive. They may also notice the engines starts to run excessively rough or stalls when they are coasting to a stop.

Solution: These 62TE transmission problems may be caused by mechanical failure with the electronically modulated converter clutch variable force solenoid / EMCC VFS solenoid, which can cause the torque converter clutch to engage when it shouldn't. To fix the problem, the EMCC solenoid will need to be replaced. This accounts for the most common cause of failure in this transmissions is a malfunctioning torque converter. Torque converters that are not functioning properly can cause shifting problems.

Other Issues that may not be related to the 62TE

Sometimes not all issues are related to the transmission itself and instead can be found in the command side including wiring, Modules, and input sensors as found in this article  Even Common Conditions are Sometimes Wrong .

Code P1698 and Faulty Instrument Panel

  • Add to quote

There's a couple of things: 1) Check the battery (not just the voltage, have it load tested if there is even a shred of doubt). Low battery is an EXTREMELY common cause for host of "behavioral" problems in these vans. 2) Pull the IOD fuse for 20-30 seconds, then reinsert. I've heard this can sometimes fix the issue. Also heard it points to potential battery problems, but not certain. 3) The infamous bad solder joints on the instrument panel. Typically, the symptoms are the vehicle periodically refuses to start, but striking the instrument panel with your hand can get it to go (for awhile anyway). If striking the instrument panel has any noticeable effects on the behavior, I would tend to guess that's your problem. Search this site as there is a tutorial with pictures and everything IIRC.

...and check the connections at the PCM and TCM. Your PCM is not receiving bus messages from the Transmission Control Module (TCM). Punch in P1698 here: http://www.iequus.com/support/obd2_definitions.php PCM is bolted to the driver side fender wall outboard of the battery. TCM is on the passenger side fender wall.

The assinine 15 minute rule got me again. Here's a couple of links to help you: http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/1a/3f/5c/0900823d801a3f5c/repairInfoPages.htm http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/1a/40/eb/0900823d801a40eb/repairInfoPages.htm Click on the pics to blow them up. The PCM is #11 on the right side on fig 2. The TCM is not identified but, it is the silver box on the left side on the fender wall just forward of the power steering fluid reservoir on fig 3. MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BEFORE CHECKING EITHER BOX.

Thanks Chad...I will try these ideas. Dont want to spend 600 bucks for a pcm as midas quoted me!!

Thanks RIP...I printed out those diagrams and hoping to fix it. Appreciate your response.

Hi badvan, I have same type of problem as you on my 1999 caravan. Cluster + rear wiper failure - intermitant. Check engine indicates code P1698. How did you fix the problem ? Thanks.

Replace the cluster. Replacements run from $40-80. It's a pretty simple swap. I had the same codes and the same symptoms. Replacing the cluster fixed the problem.

Hi, I'm new here, but I seem to be having this problem as well. ('98 Plymouth Gr. Voyager w/3.3L) Did your ABS light come on every time your instrument cluster failed to work?

grand voyager 2012

I think I am having the same problem so rather than starting a new topic, I will just add to this one. Today on the way home, I noticed that my gear indicator and odometer started flickering. I thought it was just my eyes so I didn't think much of it. Then getting on the highway, I gave it some gas to merge. While cruising, I noticed that my battery light came on, then the ABS light up on top of the dash. Then the odometer and gear indicator started blinking. At the same time, all the needles on the gauges would be jumping ever so slightly. It seemed like there was a lose connector that plugs into the cluster. Ones I got off the highway, I put the car in park and shut it off. I then right away went to start it back up and nothing. I turn the key to start and nothing happened. No lights came on, it's like I wasn't turning the key at all. I then turned the key back to off and on again and it started that time. I haven't had any problems after that driving the rest of the way home. Do these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? My biggest concern is getting stuck on the road. Would this cause my car to die on the side of the road? I thought maybe my VSS is dying?

PI - First thing I would consider is a battery/alternator problem. At the very least I would get the battery load tested. Once you've confirmed you have a good battery test the alternator output by measuring the voltage across the battery posts with the engine running. Should see at least 13.5 vdc. Make sure the battery post connections are clean and tight. Same for the battery's chassy ground connection.

Check your ignition switch as well. My car did the same for a few days. Symptoms were no turn signals (but hazard flashers still worked), ABS light on, Speedometer not working (but tacho was). MIL light came on a few times, but did not store any codes. Proved to be the ignition switch not returning properly to the 'RUN' position after starting. A bit of WD40 sprayed inside via the key slot, then working the key on/off a dozen times cured it.

I am having two problems with my 1998 Chrylser Grand Voyager minivan. I am having the similar problem with the instrument gauges all zeroing out right after my ABS light comes on. Then the alarm set light will come and finally the check engine light. It used to only last for a few minutes and then go back to normal, and always seemed to reset the next time I turned the van off and then on. It only happened every few months too. The past few weeks however it is happening much more frequently and now has been zeroed for a couple of days straight. Hitting the dash before also used to reset it. Right now it is storing an error code of P1698 How can I fix this? My biggest problem also happened intermittently. The van would start and then turn off right away. It would do this a few times and then there would be nothing. All accessories would still work however. The "Alarm Set" light would be illuminated. It almost appears that the van thinks it is being stolen and therefore shuts down. Again, sometimes hitting the dash will make it start and stay running. other times doing the lock/unlock a few times or oppening and slamming doors also seemed to enable it to start and stay running, but a lot of times it just needs to sit there for awhile and then it resets it seems. The problem is, I don't know if it will start again in a few minutes or a few hours. I've been stranded numerous times waiting it out. I've have it to the dealership twice now and they cannot find a problem when I tell them the symptoms. They said they checked all of the electrical connections and cannot find anything wrong. I have a brand new battery and starter. I'm frustrated because I never know when it will happen and if my kids and I will be stranded. Suggestions?

Take a look at the following threads on this topic: http://forum.chryslerminivan.net/showthread.php?t=6310&highlight=cluster+solder http://forum.chryslerminivan.net/showthread.php?t=6762&highlight=cluster+solder

The symptoms you describe 'docster' are the EXACT same problem as I've had with mine. Been back and forward to the garage countless times, they could not find the fault. But from this site I found out that pulling the IOD fuse from the fuse & relay center {under hood}, for 30 seconds or so then re fit it, the motor would then start. Turned out to be a cracked solder joint in the back of the instrument panel, where the pins come in from the wiring plug. Re soldered it been ok since. Sounds like your problem.

Instrument cluster failure I have had the same problem with my 99 Grand Caravan. Also in my van, the overhead console lost all its info (other than compass & temp), and the rear windshield wiper stopped working. I took it to my repair place (not a dealer) and they could not figure it out, but were able to get it to work by pounding the dash. This was back in April, so all summer we drove with the instrument going on and off. Finally, we could not get it to work by pounding any longer. The guys in the garage suggested to get a new BCM (body control module), and that they would put in a used one. This was considerably cheaper than a new (duh!), and although everything I read about that, suggested NEVER to get a used one, I did not heed that advice. Well, they put it in, and ..... nothing. The guys at the garage were at a loss, gave me the advice to take it to he dealer. Well, I'm too cheep for that, so we drove for a while, without instruments. One day I hit it really hard, and it came back on. Knowing very little about cars and nothing about electricity, I figured that if you pound the dash to make it come on, it must be something close by there that is jarred, not something in the engine compartment. Asking a co-worker for help, we tore the instrument cluster out of there (pretty simple, but the parking brake wire was the most time consuming to get back in place). Well, we had full power coming to the instrument cluster, but nothing going through it, so I bought a used instrument cluster from a salvage yard, popped it in and...... EVERYTHING WORKS. So for $45.00 for the instrument cluster we are back in business. Hope you can find a cheap fix also!

grand voyager 2012

Yes, when the instrument cluster goes bad (pattern failure is a broken solder joint at the connector), it can take the vehicle's CCD bus offline, which means that none of the onboard computers can talk to each other. That causes trouble with LOTS of things... with lots of modules setting trouble codes. - G

Been there, done that. Solder the pin connections on the back of the instrument panel per http://ingriddijkers.com/CaravanPics.html . This worked for me after months of the above syptoms.

p1698 defenition no ccd message from tcm (transmission control module) either units bad or need to be flash with the new update.

The P1698 code also comes up, after a few driving cycles, when those solder joints for the cluster plug pins go bad. There have been some newer threads on this as well. The FSM, including the Body Diagnostic Procedures book, is silent on this issue.

The P1698 code comes up on my Dodge MiniVan SE 1997 (automatic) I notice when I'm driving, it misfires around 25-40mph. It's like when shifts from 2nd-to-3rd or 3rd-to-4th gear. I've checked for solder cracks(none) & cluster pins(nothing bad). I gave it a tune up(changed the spark plugs&cables). It's still happenning. For whatever reason, it's the same code. Any suggestions? (One of my buddies randomly said, change the O2 sensor)

grand voyager 2012

I don't know if this will help someone but i have a 98 dodge caravan 3.3 engine that I was having same issue with the instrument cluster. After watching videos on YouTube everyone is saying that behind the cluster is the issue but i didn't see a single one fixing the problem. Anyway i replaced the whole engine harness. And my problem was solved good luck to everyone!!!

i am having the same thing going on with my 98 voyager did all the above and still having probs with it 500$ at 3 shops and 1 dealer

The twin Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft are exploring where nothing from Earth has flown before. Continuing on their more-than-45-year journey since their 1977 launches, they each are much farther away from Earth and the Sun than Pluto.

Quick Facts

Voyager 2 launched on August 20, 1977, from Cape Canaveral, Florida aboard a Titan-Centaur rocket. On September 5, Voyager 1 launched, also from Cape Canaveral aboard a Titan-Centaur rocket.

Artist's concept of Voyager 2 in space

Between them, Voyager 1 and 2 explored all the giant planets of our outer solar system, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune; 48 of their moons; and the unique system of rings and magnetic fields those planets possess.

Artist's concept of Voyager 1 passing beyond the heliopause, which is the boundary between our solar bubble and the matter ejected by explosions of other stars

The Voyager spacecraft are the third and fourth human spacecraft to fly beyond all the planets in our solar system. Pioneers 10 and 11 preceded Voyager in outstripping the gravitational attraction of the Sun.

Voyager 1 crossed the termination shock in December 2004 at about 94 AU from the Sun while Voyager 2 crossed it in August 2007 at about 84 AU.

Both Voyager spacecrafts carry a greeting to any form of life, should that be encountered. The message is carried by a phonograph record - -a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth.

In August 2012, Voyager 1 made the historic entry into interstellar space, the region between stars, filled with material ejected by the death of nearby stars millions of years ago. Voyager 2 entered interstellar space on November 5, 2018 and scientists hope to learn more about this region. Both spacecraft are still sending scientific information about their surroundings through the Deep Space Network, or DSN.

The primary mission was the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn. After making a string of discoveries there — such as active volcanoes on Jupiter's moon Io and intricacies of Saturn's rings — the mission was extended. Voyager 2 went on to explore Uranus and Neptune, and is still the only spacecraft to have visited those outer planets. The adventurers' current mission, the Voyager Interstellar Mission (VIM), will explore the outermost edge of the Sun's domain. And beyond.

Learn about Voyagers' mission status: where they are in the space, the time required to communicate with them, and a lot more.

Learn about the five science investigation teams, the four operating instruments on-board and the science data being returned to Earth.

The Voyager spacecraft have been exploring for decades. Dive deep into the journey with this interactive timeline.

Interstellar Mission

The mission objective of the Voyager Interstellar Mission (VIM) is to extend the NASA exploration of the solar system beyond the neighborhood of the outer planets to the outer limits of the Sun's sphere of influence, and possibly beyond.

Planetary Voyage

The twin spacecraft Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were launched by NASA in separate months in the summer of 1977 from Cape Canaveral, Florida. As originally designed, the Voyagers were to conduct closeup studies of Jupiter and Saturn, Saturn's rings, and the larger moons of the two planets.

Ch. 9 The Development of Russia

Ivan i and the rise of moscow, learning objective.

  • Outline the key points that helped Moscow become so powerful and how Ivan I accomplished these major victories
  • Moscow was considered a small trading outpost under the principality of Vladimir-Suzdal into the 13th century.
  • Power struggles and constant raids under the Mongol Empire’s Golden Horde caused once powerful cities, such as Kiev, to struggle financially and culturally.
  • Ivan I utilized the relative calm and safety of the northern city of Moscow to entice a larger population and wealth to move there.
  • Alliances between Golden Horde leaders and Ivan I saved Moscow from many of the raids and destruction of other centers, like Tver.

A rival city to Moscow that eventually lost favor under the Golden Horde.

Grand Prince of Vladimir

The title given to the ruler of this northern province, where Moscow was situated.

The Rise of Moscow

Moscow was only a small trading outpost in the principality of Vladimir-Suzdal in Kievan Rus’ before the invasion of Mongol forces during the 13th century. However, due to the unstable environment of the Golden Horde, and the deft leadership of Ivan I at a critical time during the 13th century, Moscow became a safe haven of prosperity during his reign. It also became the new seat of power of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Ivan I (also known as Ivan Kalita) was born around 1288 to the Prince of Moscow, Daniil Aleksandrovich. He was born during a time of devastation and upheaval in Rus’. Kiev had been overtaken by the invading Mongol forces in 1240, and most of the Rus’ principalities had been absorbed into the Golden Horde of the Mongol Empire by the time Ivan was born. He ascended to the seat of Prince of Moscow after the death of his father, and then the death of his older brother Yury.

image

Ivan I. He was born around 1288 and died in either 1340 or 1341, still holding the title of Grand Prince of Vladimir.

Ivan I stepped into a role that had already been expanded by his predecessors. Both his older brother and his father had captured nearby lands, including Kolomna and Mozhaisk. Yury had also made a successful alliance with the Mongol leader Uzbeg Khan and married his sister, securing more power and advantages within the hierarchy of the Golden Horde.

Ivan I continued the family tradition and petitioned the leaders of the Golden Horde to gain the seat of Grand Prince of Vladimir. His other three rivals, all princes of Tver, had previously been granted the title in prior years. However they were all subsequently deprived of the title and all three aspiring princes also eventually ended up murdered. Ivan I, on the other hand, garnered the title from Khan Muhammad Ozbeg in 1328. This new title, which he kept until his death around 1340, meant he could collect taxes from the Russian lands as a ruling prince and position his tiny city as a major player in the Vladimir region.

Moscow’s Rise

During this time of upheaval, the tiny outpost of Moscow had multiple advantages that repositioned this town and set it up for future prosperity under Ivan I. Three major contributing factors helped Ivan I relocate power to this area:

  • It was situated in between other major principalities on the east and west so it was often protected from the more devastating invasions.
  • This relative safety, compared to Tver and Ryazan, for example, started to bring in tax-paying citizens who wanted a safe place to build a home and earn a livelihood.
  • Finally, Moscow was set up perfectly along the trade route from Novgorod to the Volga River, giving it an economic advantage from the start.

Ivan I also spurred on the growth of Moscow by actively recruiting people to move to the region. In addition, he bought the freedom of people who had been captured by the extensive Mongol raids. These recruits further bolstered the population of Moscow. Finally, he focused his attention on establishing peace and routing out thieves and raiding parties in the region, making for a safe and calm metaphorical island in a storm of unsettled political and military upsets.

image

Kievan Rus’ 1220-1240. This map illustrates the power dynamics at play during the 13th century shortly before Ivan I was born. Sarai, the capital of the Golden Horde, sat to the southeast, while Moscow (not visible on this map) was tucked up in the northern forests of Vladimir-Suzdal.

Ivan I knew that the peace of his region depended upon keeping up an alliance with the Golden Horde, which he did faithfully. Moscow’s increased wealth during this era also allowed him to loan money to neighboring principalities. These regions then became indebted to Moscow, bolstering its political and financial position.

In addition, a few neighboring cities and villages were subsumed into Moscow during the 1320s and 1330s, including Uglich, Belozero, and Galich. These shifts slowly transformed the tiny trading outpost into a bustling city center in the northern forests of what was once Kievan Rus’.

Russian Orthodox Church and The Center of Moscow

Ivan I committed some of Moscow’s new wealth to building a splendid city center and creating an iconic religious setting. He built stone churches in the center of Moscow with his newly gained wealth. Ivan I also tempted one of the most important religious leaders in Rus’, the Orthodox Metropolitan Peter, to the city of Moscow. Before the rule of the Golden Horde the original Russian Orthodox Church was based in Kiev. After years of devastation, Metropolitan Peter transferred the seat of power to Moscow where a new Renaissance of culture was blossoming. This perfectly timed transformation of Moscow coincided with the decades of devastation in Kiev, effectively transferring power to the north once again.

image

Peter of Moscow and scenes from his life as depicted in a 15th-century icon. This religious leader helped bring cultural power to Moscow by moving the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church there during Ivan I’s reign.

One of the most lasting accomplishments of Ivan I was to petition the Khan based in Sarai to designate his son, who would become Simeon the Proud, as the heir to the title of Grand Prince of Vladimir. This agreement a line of succession that meant the ruling head of Moscow would almost always hold power over the principality of Vladimir, ensuring Moscow held a powerful position for decades to come.
