Buses are by far the cheapest way to get around. They stick very strictly to their schedules and are highly dependable. However, if you’re wanting to travel around the inner city, then the interlinking Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), is a better option, as they travel to areas that the buses don’t.

The Metro is also a great way to get around, and connects all the major districts of Guangzhou! You can purchase individual tickets, but it’s far cheaper to purchase a Yang Cheng Tong card for your entire stay at one of the Metro stations. There are English translations on all signboards.

Trains are mainly used for long-distance travel, so if you plan on traveling to a nearby city, taking a train is the best option.

Taxis are great if you’re doing short-distance travel in Guangzhou. Most taxi drivers don’t speak any English, so it’s advised to have the address written out in Chinese, or travel to a major landmark near your desired destination.

If you’re wondering what to do in Guangzhou, wonder no more! On your first day, you’ll explore the incredible Chinese culture, as well as meeting some of their finest exotic animals! Delve deep into the countries history and enjoy scenic views of the beautiful city of Guangzhou.

Day 1 / Stop 1 – Explore Sacred Heart Cathedral

• Why it’s awesome: The Sacred Heart Cathedral is a Catholic cathedral that took over 25 years to build.
• Cost: Free!
• Food nearby: Xinji Seafood Restaurant is the perfect place to stop for supper on the way back to your hotel. The seafood provides the perfect change of pace from all the Chinese food you’ll be eating. It’s right near the Zhujiang River, so it provides wonderful views while you indulge in your meal.

The Sacred Heart Cathedral took 25 years to be built but was eventually finished in 1888. It is one of the very few buildings to be completely built out of granite. This makes it very architecturally interesting and well worth the visit!

You can enter the building at any time to view its stunning interior, however, if you’d like to attend a mass should visit in the morning. These are held in various different languages such as Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, and English.

Day 1 / Stop 2 – Enjoy Views from the Top of Canton Tower

• Why it’s awesome: Set out in the early morning to enjoy views from the top of the highest building in China.
• Cost: USD $22 – to climb to the top.
• Food nearby: Lan Kwai Fong is a nearby restaurant that serves delicious food! They have a wide variety of seafood and meat dishes on their menu that are an absolute delight to the tastebuds!

Canton Tower is the tallest building in China and stands an impressive 600-meters tall. Set out in the early morning to climb to the top of the building in a completely transparent staircase that allows for great views on the way up.

If you’re not up for the climb, you can always go part of the way (at a discounted price), or you can take the Sky Wheel Bubble Tram that will transport you to the top. Once you’re at the top you’ll get the chance to enjoy an incredible birds-eye view of the city, and panoramic views of the surrounding area.

If you want to fast track your trip down, or you’re up for the thrill of an adrenaline rush, why not take the Sky Drop, where you can experience a 30-meter free-fall at the height of 485-meters. This experience is in the Guinness World Records for the highest vertical free fall in the world!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Take a Stroll Through Yuexiu Park

• Why it’s awesome: Yuexiu Park is the largest of all the urban parks in Guangzhou.
• Food nearby: Tiger Prawn Vietnamese Restaurant makes a wonderful variety of Vietnamese dishes that you simply must try. Whether you’re in the mood for tasty Raman, or wonderful seafood or noodle dishes, this is the place to visit!

Take a stroll through Yuexiu Park and enjoy the beautiful landscape and luscious vegetation. Take in the wonderful garden aromas and spend the morning listening to birds chirping and locals chattering as they walk through the park.

Grab a take-away coffee and a pastry to enjoy while you walk, or sit down to a full meal after your walk. As if the wonderful scenery isn’t enough to indulge your senses, there are also a variety of landmarks in the park.

View the five-rams sculpture which is one of the most famous sculptures in the city. The trees and lakes in the park provide a laid-back atmosphere that provides a truly relaxing and enjoyable morning.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – Spend Time With Native Animals at Xiangjiang Safari Park

• Why it’s awesome: Meet some of China’s most endangered animals and learn what is being done to protect these amazing creatures.
• Cost: USD $22
• Food nearby: China Food City serves a delicious variety of Chinese food. Help yourself to a large plate of dumplings or rice and chicken dishes that will blow your mind.

If you’re ready to meet an incredible collection of exotic animals, this is the. Xiangjiang Safari Park contains the world’s largest collection of white tigers, which you will be able to meet. Learn about what it takes to protect these incredible animals and what’s being done to make sure they don’t go extinct.

Visit the first-class Giant Panda Center, where you’ll see Giant Pandas being rehabilitated for their release back into the wild. You’ll also see many other protected species such as the Giant Salamander.

There are two portions of this safari park – the safari on wheels (which is the drive-through section) and the walkthrough. During the safari on wheels portion of the experience, you’ll see different landscapes and habitats that have been created for the different animals. These animals will often get close to your car which allows you to get a better look!

The walkthrough portion is where you’ll find different exhibits. This is also very interesting! Each exhibit and habitat has ample space for the animals to roam freely and explore, and they’re treated with the utmost care!

Insider Tip: Make a list of the exhibits that you’d like to see most, and visit them first. The park is so large, it’s unlikely you’ll get to see everything in one day.

Day 1 / Stop 5 – Visit the Chen Clan Academy

• Why it’s awesome: The Chen Clan Academy is also known as the Ancestral Temple of the Chen family, and is a great activity for history lovers.
• Cost: USD $2; but free on Wednesdays!
• Food nearby: Panxi Restaurant is a traditional Chinese restaurant that serves amazing food. Be sure to order their dumplings with a side order of egg-fried rice, and wash that down with some Jasmine tea after your meal.

The building contains Chen’s Lineage Hall, which is where you’ll find information about the ancestors of the famous Chen family. This is where descendants used to offer up sacrifices to their ancestors in hopes of creating a better life for themselves.

It now serves as a folk art museum and contains many artifacts and shows off the characteristics of traditional Chinese architecture.

The Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family consists of nine buildings and nine courtyards, each showing off different exhibits to their visitors. You’ll find various carvings and sculptures throughout the museum, made from things like wood, brick, pottery, stone, and lime.

In the temple, you’ll also be able to learn about historic scenes and events that took place and shaped the lives of those who lived in the Guangdong province. If you have a keen eye for art, you’re sure to enjoy this historic site.

Day 1 / Stop 6 – Visit the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

• Why it’s awesome: The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall was built in commemoration of the great Chinese revolutionary leader – Sun Yat Sen
• Food nearby: Bosphorus Turkish Restaurant serves incredibly tasty Turkish cuisine. Whether you’re stopping by for supper, or a delicately arranged snack platter, this restaurant is sure to satisfy any craving!

The memorial hall is built on a plot that takes up 16 acres of land. You can walk around the plot, enjoying the beautiful scenery, ancient trees, and picturesque views before heading inside to learn more one of modern China’s founding fathers.

The building itself is absolutely stunning! Built in traditional Chinese architecture, style the structure is ornately decorated and has been well preserved and taken care of over the years.

Inside the building, you’ll find photographs, artworks and other memorabilia that commemorate the amazing life of the revolutionary San Yat Sen.

One of the most interesting exhibitions is in the exhibition hall for Sun Deeds. The best part is the 10-square foot section that is paved with bricks from five different time periods. This gives you an idea of how things have changed over the years!

Baomo Gardens | Guangdong Museum | Yuyin Gardens | Mausoleum of the Nanyue King | Temple of Six Banyan Trees | Huacheng Square

For the second part of your 2-day itinerary in Guangzhou, you’ll be diving headfirst and immersing yourself in the unique culture of the land, as well as exploring beautiful traditional gardens!

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Take an Early Morning Stroll Through Baomo Gardens

• Why it’s awesome: The Baomo Gardens were originally created by the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911 AD) as an extension of the temple.
• Food nearby: Ajisen Ramen serves an incredible variety of ramen dishes, as well as other lovely Vietnamese food. Be sure to indulge in their hearty egg noodles, or order a delicious snack off their tapas menu.

There’s no better way to start a day than with a stroll through gardens taking in the wonderful beauty of nature. The Baomo Gardens offer you the chance to do exactly this.

The Gardens were created by the Qing Dynasty but were later destroyed in 1950. This was a great loss to the villagers, who then began to reconstruct the gardens in 1955. This reconstruction took 8 years but was well worth the effort.

The garden is a prime example of what traditional South China gardens look like. You’ll also find many public artworks in the gardens, many of these are decorative sculptures! Be sure to take your camera along for this excursion.

Insider Tip: The plants and flowers are what really make this garden beautiful all year round. The very best areas to enjoy the plants are the Rose Yard, Lotus Pond, Orchid Garden, and the Purple Bamboo woods.

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Learn the History of the Area at Guangdong Museum

• Why it’s awesome: Guangdong museum is a general museum that features Cantonese art, nature, culture, and history.
• Food nearby: Antalya Turkish Restaurant is the perfect place to stop off for a delicious brunch. Be sure to indulge in their home-made breads as a side to your meal, you won’t regret it.

This wonderful museum was built in 1959 and greatly enlarged in 1992. It contains several distinct exhibitions and notice boards in English, which come in very handy when you’re in a country where English is barely used.

One of the most popular displays is “Chauzhou Wood Carving”. This is where you’ll find objects elaborately carved into wood as well as an explanation of the history of this skill, and the different techniques involved.

You’ll also find a section dedicated to modern ceramic figures, crafted in the traditional Shiwan style. Each window is dedicated to a different artist and displays examples of their works.

The main exhibition space consists of historical artifacts, an exhibition space for nature, and a few temporary exhibitions which are updated regularly. If you’re into history, then the Guangdong Museum is a must-visit during your Guangzhou itinerary!

Day 2 / Stop 3 – Explore Yuyin Gardens

• Why it’s awesome: The garden was first built in 1864 as a private garden for Wu Bin.
• Food nearby: Morgan’s Restaurant serves decent Western Cuisine. Get ready for a juicy burger and a side of fries, paired with a margarita or chilled beer!

The gardens cover an impressive area of 1598 square meters and it boasts of dainty features and a very well organized layout. The garden is complete with pavilion, bridges, lotus pool, rock hills, and beautiful flower gardens.

There are many archways in the garden with descriptive poetry written on them. There is also a fairly new section of the garden that was built by the fourth generation grandson of Wu Bin. He named this section Yu Garden or Ladies Garden, as it was created to allow women to have a space to play Zheng and paint.

Insider Tip: There is a two-story platform in the garden that contains a glass floor. This allows you to go upstairs and look out over the garden through the floor. It’s a spectacular experience that should be treasured!

Day 2 / Stop 4 – Visit the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King

• Why it’s awesome: Zhao Mo ruled China between 137 BC until 122 BC, but his tomb was only discovered in 1983.
• Cost: USD $5
• Food nearby: Buongiorno Italian Restaurant is an Italian restaurant that serves a wonderful variety of pizza and pasta – a refreshing change from the Chinese food you’ll become so accustomed to. Indulge in a hearty carbo-loading before heading to the next activity on your Guangzhou itinerary.

Zhao Mo’s tomb (previous ruler of China) was only discovered in 1983, but it wasn’t until 1988 that the museum was opened to showcase the wonderful artifacts found in the tomb. The area was named a National Historic Site in 1996, and is renowned for its funerary artifacts!

The tomb is hidden 20 meters underground and is made up of 750 huge stones, as well as colorful murals. In the tomb, there are 1000 pieces of cultural relics made from mainly bronzeware and terra cotta.

The tomb is 11 meters wide and 12 meters long, and you will be able to venture inside during your visit to the Mausoleum, which is built around the tomb site.

Day 2 / Stop 5 – Spend Some Time at the Temple of Six Banyan Trees

• Why it’s awesome: This temple was originally built in 537 AD.
• Food nearby: Water Restaurant serves great Chinese food in very generous portions! If you’re famished after all the exploring, be sure to pop into Water Restaurant for a large helping of noodles and veg!

The Banyan Tree Temple has become known for it’s proximity to the foreign consulates. It has become popular a place where children who are going to be adopted come to give blessings to their new family. This little tradition has been going on for quite some time, and has given the temple a new meaning!

It was originally built to house the relics of Cambodian Buddhist Saints, which had been brought to Panyu. But the temple was burnt down and rebuilt during the Northern Song Dynasty – losing all the relics in the fire.

The architecture of this temple is amazing. It’s built in the form of a tower with many tiers. Be sure to take your camera along for this excursion as you’ll want to remember this beautiful building!

Day 2 / Stop 6 – Watch the Sunset from Huacheng Square

• Why it’s awesome: Several prominent landmarks surround the square, making it a great place to visit if you’re interested in killing a few birds with one stone.
• Food nearby: Bingsheng Restaurant is a wonderful Chinese dinner restaurant that serves a wide variety of flavor. Eat seafood and veg to your heart’s content at this wonderful little casual dining spot.

Huacheng Square is also known as the Flower City Square and is by far the largest square in Guangzhou city. Guangzhou Opera House, Guangzhou Museum, and Guangzhou library are all located around the square, and the famous Canton Tower is located just across the river.

It is a car- and bike-free pedestrian zone (a rare thing in this bustling city), which allows you to walk around freely, exploring the park, ponds, and fountains that decorate the square.

It’s the perfect place to visit in the evening, as locals stroll through the square on their way home from work. It’s also perfectly located next to the Pearl River, giving you stunning sunset views. You can also watch the Canton Tower light up for the night as the daylight starts to fade.

The square was only opened to the public in 2010, and ever since has been a huge hit amongst the locals as well as tourists visiting the city.

If you’re spending more than 2 days in Guangzhou, you’ll need a few more activities to add to your list of things to do. Here are a few extras that you simply must add to your Guangzhou itinerary if you have a little extra time.

Take a Trip to Shamian Island

• Shamian Island is a quaint town dominated by European architecture
• There are plenty of landmarks to visit that would take up an entire day
• Experience the exotic atmosphere

Shamian Island is easy to get to from Guangzhou! A short ride on the metro and a walk across an oversea bridge will see you on the island safely. The island is connected to the mainland via 4 bridges and is extremely close to the mainland, making it easy to travel to.

On the island, you’ll notice the exquisite architecture of over 150 European style buildings. It’s not uncommon for tourists to take architecture tours here, but we think you can just as easily explore the town and take it all in for yourself.

There are plenty of landmarks to be explored on Shamian Island, and a wide variety of statues, pavilions, and fountains that seem to catch the eye of many first time visitors.

The exotic atmosphere so prevalent on the island is sure to leave a lasting impression! If you’re keen to stay a little longer on the island, be sure to explore the thriving nightlife scene and pop in at the unique bars and nightclubs.

If learning about history, architecture and culture are all things you enjoy, then Shamian Island is a must-visit on your Guangzhou itinerary!

Spend the Day at Chimelong Paradise

• Chimelong Paradise is an amusement park that is just as entertaining for adults as it is for kids
• Variety of fun rides
• Cable car for sightseeing

Chimelong Paradise is a massive amusement park that contains fun for the whole family. The park was opened in 2006, and is the largest amusement park in China.

The park is so big it has themed areas, which make it all the more exciting! Whirlwind island is the first of these and boasts 6 attractions, all with a spinning or rotating motion. If your stomach can handle it, this section can be loads of fun!

Screaming Zone hosts 4 activities that are sure to get your adrenaline pumping! The biggest roller coaster in the park is a must-do on your Guangzhou itinerary, and the jumping machine also proves to be fun for everyone who is brave enough to try it!

The Happy Kingdom is home to 15 attractions that are a lot tamer, and are recommended if you’re with small children, or just prefer to take it easy.

Kid’s Land , Rainbow Bay , and Phantom Zone are other sections that you’ll need to explore! It’s recommended that you buy a 2 or 3-day pass if you’d like a chance to try all the rides. This way you don’t have to rush around the park!

Splash and Swim at Chimelong Water Park

• Enjoy a great variety of supertubes and other water rides

The water park is known for its amazing variety of rides, and it’s ever-changing landscape. It’s a  part of the Chimelong Paradise amusement park, but because they are both so big, they are best separated into different days’ activities.

Spend the day swimming in the Super Wave Poo l with a group of friends or head to the Merging Slide for an extra speedy experience! If you’re looking for something a little more peaceful, try the Drift River Adventure where you can slowly make your way down the man-made river in a tube, while taking in the beautiful jungle-like scenery.

If you’re taking a small child, be sure to visit Parent-Child Water City , which caters to toddlers with gentle splash activities. You can accompany your child in this section, or leave them in the care of a knowledgable care-taker.

Be sure to purchase your ticket online on their website, to get a considerable discount on your day pass!

The water park also hosts a variety of musical events in the evenings. If you’re lucky, a K-Pop group will be in town to perform their latest hits. At the water park, there are often performances given from the shallow water, which make for a very unique experience. If you’re a K-Pop fan, be sure to check the concert schedule in advance!

Explore Guangxiao Temple

• Guangxiao Temple is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Guangzhou
• Many Buddhist scriptures were translated here
• Stop-over point for Asian missionary monks

Guangxiao is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the Guangzhou area, and because of that has a great history. The temple has acted as a stop-over for missionary monks traveling from Asia. Many Buddhist scriptures were also translated in the temple, making it a sacred place for any Buddhist people.

The temple was repeatedly renamed as it changed hands many times in the first 200 years AD. It contained over 5 different names during this time. Between the 4th and 10th centuries, the temple was used as a stop-over for missionary monks and after that became the permanent residents of a few monks looking to increase Buddhism in the area.

During the 17th century, the temple fell into a state of disrepair and had undergone many alterations until it was completely restored to its former glory.

On the property, you’ll find an animal liberation pond, which was built by the monks who live there. Although the temple is much smaller today than it was in the past, it’s still definitely worth the visit!

Picnic in South China Botanical Garden

• Make sure you include this beautiful experience in your 3-day itinerary in Guangzhou
• The garden was founded in 1929 by a botanist
• It covers an area os 1155 hectares

This expansive garden is not only beautiful, but it is the source on which much plant research is based. The garden contains over 2400 species of plants, making it the perfect place to do scientific research on plant life.

The botanical garden is divided into sections, with greenhouses and other open-air gardens. Take a stroll through the garden and see a variety of beautiful ponds as well as designated flower areas.

The best way to enjoy this garden is to take a picnic with you. This way when you get tired of strolling through the garden, you can sit down to enjoy a meal in the lush surrounds.

Be sure to take your camera with you to these gardens, as there’s plenty of flora and fauna that’s unique to China, that you’ll want to remember in years to come. Be sure to make a stop off at the South China Botanical Gardens during your trip to Guangzhou!

A Perfect 3 Day Guangzhou Itinerary

Guangzhou (otherwise known as Canton) is the geographical, historical and cultural core of the country’s southern part. Being such an important city, it is no wonder that there is a lot to see and a lot to do there. It is full of places of interest and opportunities to try.

If you want to explore it in full, you need maybe a whole month. But what if you have only 3 days in Guangzhou to stay? Here is my suggestion about how to best spend your time in this famous city and build a perfect 3 day Guangzhou itinerary.

Visiting Guangzhou

But before that – let’s introduce Guangzhou. What kind of city is it? What can you expect there?

If you look at the map of China, you can see three rivers, called East, North and West Rivers, joining together in a large and complex delta. This is Pearl River Delta, occupied by one of the largest city clusters in the world. Guangzhou is a part of this cluster, the biggest city within it. It is also known by the name Canton, but Guangzhou is its local Chinese name. 

Guangzhou is established in the northern part of the delta, on land which is mainly flat, consisting of many islands and river canals. It has its central urban part, and long northern and southern suburbs area- so long, that the distance between the southern to the northern ends is more than 100 km. 

So, you can build your 3 day Guangzhou itinerary as a part of a longer itinerary including Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Macau and the other cities of Pearl River Delta. If you want to explore the whole Delta, but your time is limited, plan 1 or 2 days in all of the other cities, but leave 3 days in Guangzhou as a minimum.

Two of these three days leave for the central area. On the first day focus on the old sites and the second day spend exploring the new and modern sites. Then, on the third day head to the southern suburbs, called Panyu and Nansha, which are more interesting than the north suburbs. 

An overview of this 3 days in Guangzhou itinerary

Here is my proposed Guangzhou itinerary:

Day 1 Explore the two older parts of Guangzhou; Liwan and Yuexiu

Day 2 Focus on Pearl River, and the new modern parts of Guangzhou; Tianhe and Haizhu

Day 3 Make a trip to the south- to explore Panyu and Nansha areas. 

Reasons you should visit Guangzhou

As I already mentioned, Guangzhou is the southern centre of China, so it should be a mandatory part of your China trip. Here are a few other reasons you should visit Guangzhou…

• Guangzhou has more than 2000 years of history and has developed a rich culture, so you can expect to see really a lot here.
• Guangzhou is one of the most modern and developed cities in the world, perfect for those who are looking for luxury and super modern style.
• The food in Guangzhou (called Cantonese cuisine) is known as one of the richest in variety in the whole of China.
• Guangzhou is one of the largest trade centres in the world, hosting the famous Canton Fair, so for the businessmen, it should be of great interest.

When is the best time of the year to visit Guangzhou?

Guangzhou is located in the southern part of the humid tropical zone. It is near the South China Sea, and the climate is really humid. From February to June is mainly rainy, and in February it is also cold so the weather is comparable with rainy weather in England!

Then from April to September is the hot and humid summer, the rains reaching their peak at the end of May and the first half of June, after which it starts to dry up.

So, the best time of the year to visit Guangzhou is from the second half of October until the beginning of December. The weather then is mainly sunny and dry, and not too hot but pleasantly warm.

After December 1 st it starts getting cold. Still nice, but since there is no central heating in Guangzhou, your room could be cold and uncomfortable. 

Also, avoid the main Chinese holidays, especially the National Holiday from October 1 to 7, because it may be really crowded. Seriously, don’t forget that the Chinese population is almost 1,4 billion people and you can feel it VERY strongly during these holidays!

How to get around Guangzhou

As a big city, Guangzhou has a very well developed transport network, so you can go almost anywhere very quickly. 

One of the most convenient forms of transportation is the metro system. It is cheap (from 2-10 CNY, depending on the distance). I would recommend your stay close to a metro station. From there you can travel conveniently to every corner of Guangzhou, avoiding the heavy traffic and traffic jams around the city. It is good for quickly moving from one place to another. The only downside is that you can’t watch the city go by.

Public buses are another option. They are convenient too and allow you to observe local daily life in Guangzhou. However, they are slower than the metro.

If you want to move faster, and at the same time to watch the city from the window, you can take a taxi. Of course, it is much expensive than the metro and bus, but can be very comfortable. Prices start from 10 CNY – add 2-6 CNY for every kilometre. 

Another new and convenient way for relatively short distances is the shared public bike . Great for if you want to get between metro stations and attractions. Now you can easily find a shared public bike on the street and move quickly to the desired place, fully immersed in the local life around you. You just need to have WeChat installed, the shared bike’s application and a bank account attached.

Where to base yourself for 3 days in Guangzhou

You need a good location to base yourself in Guangzhou, in order to use your time in the best way. Basically, the best places in big cities like Guangzhou are near the metro stations.

You’ll want to find somewhere with plenty of things to do in the evenings and ways to relax in Guangzhou whilst also being close to the metro station.

The first place I’d suggest is near the pedestrian street Shanxiajiu, which is very attractive, especially in the evening. It has its own ‘old Cantonese’ atmosphere and is full of restaurants, street food, shops, malls, as well as bars and clubs. The nearest metro station is Changshou Road.

Another good place is near Beijing Road, another more modern pedestrian street. The nearest metro station would be Beijing Road station. 

Your 3 Day Guangzhou itinerary

So, let’s look at your Guangzhou itinerary in detail… 

Day 1 of your Guangzhou itinerary

In the morning….

Your first day in Guangzhou is focused on Yuexiu and Liwan areas, which are the older part of the city. There are a few important landmarks and symbols of Guangzhou, which represent this city, so you can focus on them this day.

They are Yuexiu Park, Xiguan Antique City, Chen Clan Academy and Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, as well as some minor, but also very interesting sites like the Cantonese Opera and Art Museum and Nanyue King Mausoleum. 

So, in the morning you should move to your starting point for the day- Yuexiu Park Metro Station. From here you will visit your first destination for the day- Yuexiu Park, with its symbols Five Rams Sculpture and Zhenhai Tower. 

Yuexiu Park is located on a hill, with nice gardens and three lakes. It is full of beautiful traditional pavilions, amusement playgrounds, alleys and other places to relax.

But first, you should visit Zhenhai Tower- a very important symbolic building, dated from the early Ming Dynasty times. It is the first Lingnan architecture style tower in the area, and now it is turned into the Guangzhou Museum. The entrance fee will cost you 10 CNY. 

Another important symbol is the Five Rams Statue. More than 2000 years ago, five immortals, riding five rams, came to this place (suffering poverty and misery at that time), gave rice to the local people and left. But their five rams stayed, turned into stone and remained as an eternal blessing of prosperity to the city. That’s why this turned into one of the most important landmarks of Guangzhou.

For lunch…

The whole walk in Yuexiu Park, including the Guangzhou Museum visit, can be roughly about 3 hours long. So, after that, it would be time for lunch. If you are looking for something cheap and fast- there are a lot of small fast food places on the streets around.

But if you are looking for something more special, you can go to a few restaurants nearby: Macau Restaurant (澳门街风味餐厅), or Subway Lao Xiguan Food centre (赛百味)- both of them can be easily found on Google Maps (just copy-paste their names in Chinese). 

In the afternoon…

In the afternoon, when you finish your lunch, you can proceed to explore the nearby sites. There are two important museums, just right beside Yuexiu Park.

The first one is the Nanyue King Mausoleum. It presents the history of the ancient Nanyue Kingdom- a state which existed in the 2nd century BC, finally conquered by the Han Empire. The most interesting and symbolic artefact there is the Jade Burial Costume of the Nanyue King- a unique way of burial by thousands of jade plates. The entrance fee is 10 CNY as of June 2019. You will need about at least one hour to explore.

Then proceed to the second important site nearby – Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. Now you move ‘by the time machine’ to the beginning of the 20 th century. Guangzhou played a very important role in the Republic of China era, and Sun Yat-Sen’s life. So this memorial hall, being the largest one, dedicated to Dr Sun Yat-Sen, is now turned into a museum. The entrance fee is 10 CNY (as of June 2019.) Estimated time for visiting is about 1 hour.

For dinner… 

Once you have finished exploring Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, you can enjoy a nice evening in Xiguan Antique City- a delicious dinner in the restaurants in the area, like Lingji Fulaige or Panji Restaurants, offering Cantonese food. Or, alternatively, you can try some street food nearby. 

There are a few ways how to get to from Xiguan Antique City from Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. If you choose to travel by taxi, you can expect it to cost 30-35 CNY.

You can also go there by metro, although you have to change from Line 2 to Line 5. There are some public buses that you can use too: No. 133, 85 and 204 (for only 2CNY). And finally, the best (in my opinion) option – by a shared bike. 

In the evening…

After dinner, you can enjoy the old streets of Xiguan, and especially the nice park with its Liwan Lake. The evening atmosphere is really exciting there. You can enjoy some shopping in this area too – there are a lot of souvenirs, Chinese tea, as well as just clothes, shoes and other “normal” shops.

Day 2 on your Guangzhou Itinerary

There are still a few more places you need to explore in Guangzhou. The first important place, which is one of the most important Guangzhou landmarks is Chen Clan Academy. You can go there by metro and it is found by exit D of Chen Clan Academy (Chen Jia Ci) station. 

Chen Clan Academy is a real masterpiece of Cantonese Lingnan architecture. It was originally built by a wealthy Chinese overseas family to serve as an educational centre, preparing students for government examinations in Qing Dynasty era. After the fall of Qing, its role has changed a few times. Now it is not just a museum of art and architecture but still serves as an educational centre for fine arts. The entrance fee is 10 CNY (as of June 2019.) Estimated time for visiting is 1 hour. 

Then you can take the metro to Changshou Road or Huangshan (1 or 2 stations away only) and walk around 550-600 m to the Cantonese Opera and Art Museum. This museum is really worth to visit.

It is not just a museum, but it also contains a splendid Cantonese traditional garden, with old Lingnan architecture buildings and a beautiful pond. In the main hall of the museum, you can see a lot of Cantonese opera and art presentations. It is free to enter and the estimated time for visiting is 1 – 1.5 hrs.

At lunchtime…

The best place for lunch on your second day of this Guangzhou itinerary is Shamian – a small piece of Europe in the heart of Guangzhou. The best way to move from Cantonese Opera and Art Museum to Shamian is by taxi or shared bike since there are no direct buses or metro on this route. If you chose to walk it will take around 30 mins. 

Crossing one of the bridges onto Shamian Island, you will find yourself in a totally different environment. Shamian is an island which has been given to the French and British traders in concession, from the end of the 18th century. As a result, a lot of beautiful buildings were raised there, all in the classical European style, with quiet garden-style alleys. You can literally feel like you are in Vienna or somewhere in Paris. So, Shamian has become another landmark of Guangzhou.

Your walk in Shamian would lead you to the Pearl Riverbank, where you can find some nice restaurants and cafes – a great location to find some lunch.

After lunch, it is time for one of the most exciting activities during your Guangzhou itinerary- a cruise on Pearl River .

Follow the river bank. After you leave Shamian, you find a large square, where you can see the beautiful old building of the Canton Customs on your left. Not far from there you will see the wharf where you can take the ferry to Canton Tower, for only 2CNY (a really cheap cruise!). 

The cruise on the river is around 45 mins and you will enjoy stunning views of the Guangzhou cityscape. The highest skyscrapers will rise on your left, and straight in front of you will be Canton Tower, the newest symbol of Guangzhou.

Canton Tower is one of the tallest TV towers in the world, and in general- one of the tallest buildings, at 600m high. Its design is a real masterpiece, reminiscent of a maiden, gently twisting her waist. 

You can enjoy seeing the Canton Tower from outside but there are a lot of attractions inside the tower too. Yes, it is more expensive with an entrance fee of 150 CNY and some attractions requiring an additional fee, such as the bubble tram and free-fall dropping. But the best thing to do in the Canton Tower is to visit the panoramic terrace. You can not only observe the whole Guangzhou from bird’s view but if it is late afternoon and the sky is clear, you can enjoy a breathtaking sunset. 

When you go out of Canton Tower and walk around 300 m southward, you will see another tower, which is small and much older. It is called Chigang Pagoda, and the small garden around it is a really nice place to relax. If you walk around it, you can find a spot where you can take a photo of the two towers together – the old and the new one. 

For dinner…

From Canton Tower, you can take the metro for a few stations and arrive at the central part of Tianhe- to Tianhe South station. Then you can take an evening walk and enter Tee Mall – one of the biggest malls in China. There are a lot of things that you can do inside – shopping, watching movies, and of course finding your dinner. There are a lot of restaurants, offering plenty of cuisines from China and abroad.

Day 3 of your Guangzhou itinerary

During your last day in Guangzhou, you can try moving further from the central parts of the city. There are two main suburbs areas. The northern consists of Baiyun, Huadu and the counties of Zengcheng and Conghua. It is too large, covered by fields, low mountains and a lot of villages, towns, industrial and residential areas. There are some attractions too, but they are too far and require too long time only to reach one of them.

There is also a smaller eastern suburb area, consisting of Huangpu and Luogang districts (which are now merged), but there is not too much to see there.

And finally, there is the southern suburb area, consisting of Panyu and Nansha. I would recommend visiting here on the 3 rd day of your Guangzhou itinerary, especially Panyu. 

In Panyu, there are a few beautiful old traditional and historical sites worth visiting. But since with just 3 days in Guangzhou, you will not have enough time to explore all of them, I would recommend two – Lingnan Impression Park and Baomo Garden. But be ready for long distance trips, much longer than in the previous two days. 

First thing in the morning, take the metro to Higher Education Mega Center South (Daxuecheng Nan) station. From there you have a 15-20 minute walk, or alternatively, take a taxi or shared bicycle. 

Lingnan Impression Park is a former village, gradually swallowed by the growing city. But unlike many other villages, this one has been well protected due to its beautiful old Cantonese architecture. 

There are a lot of old traditional buildings inside. But of special interest are those with walls covered in oyster shells – it is something unique, which you won’t see everywhere in China.

There are also two ancestral temples, a mansion house, turned into a museum, which depicts the life of a wealthy family. There is also the Hong Kong-Macau goods area for shopping. The entrance fee is 60 CNY and estimated time to visit is around 2 hours. 

When you finish exploring here, you can move to Baomo Garden. You have two choices- the more expensive choice is by taxi which will take around 50 mins to 1 hour (or more if there is traffic jam somewhere). But you can expect it to cost at least 130-150 CNY for the trip.

Another way, which is cheaper, but can take at least 1 hour 40 mins or more, is by metro and bus. First, you have to back to Higher Education Mega Center South station and take the metro to City Bridge (Shi Qiao) station (change one line). And from there take bus No.67 to Baomo Garden. It will be around 20-30 CNY. 

At Lunchtime…

Since the distance is long, I would recommend you stop at City Bridge station and take your lunch there. It is the central part of Panyu district, where you can find malls, shops and restaurants. 

In the afternoon, explore Baomo Garden. It is a real paradise and the most beautiful garden of this kind that I have seen. Its story comes from the Qing Dynasty times, and now it presents plenty of Cantonese architecture; pavilions, temples, halls, ponds, artificial rock hills and bridges.

There is also a ship-like hall, where you can enjoy watching Cantonese opera, drinking local tea. The most spectacular feature of Baomo Garden is two long walls with an inscribed story on them, one in relief from, and one like a long picture – a splendid art masterpiece. The entrance fee is 45 CNY and estimated time to visit is at least 2 hours. 

From Baomo Garden back to the centre is a long trip- about 2 hours, if you choose the cheaper way. You have to back to City Bridge station by bus No. 67, then by metro and one line change to reach Changshou Road station or any other station that your hotel is located. Expect to pay more than 150 CNY for a taxi but it will only take 50-60 minutes.

Alternative itinerary for Day 3 in Guangzhou

If you don’t want to spend too much time in old traditional sites, on your Day 3 you can go to another, very different place, replacing Lingnan Impression or Baomo Garden. This is Chimelong Resort- the largest amusement park area in China. Actually, it consists of 4 parks.

The first is Safari Park – a large place like a zoo, but in a much more natural environment for the animals. The second is Paradise Park- a vertiginous amusement park with plenty of entertainment to keep you amused. The third is a Water Park- again an amusement park, but with water sports and play. The fourth is Bird Park- something like Safari Park, but for birds watching. 

Visiting any of the Chimelong parks is expensive, entrance fees are more than 150 CNY for each park. Visiting one park would take you at least half a day. The good thing is that there is a nearby metro station-Hanxi Changlong station, which makes the trip to and from Chimelong much more comfortable. 

Your 3 days in Guangzhou has come to an end but if you have followed this Guangzhou itinerary, you will have experienced its geography, history, culture, local life and entertainment. And yes, whilst 3 days is a short amount of time to explore Guangzhou, it will have been an unforgettable few days and hopefully, inspire you to visit and explore Guangzhou further.

Guangzhou or Canton, the thriving world metropolis lying in Guangdong Province in Southern China, is attractive to a growing amount of people to come by and see its marvelous change as the south gate of China to the world since the Reform and Opening-up Policy in 1978. When Is the Best Time to Visit Guangzhou?

Guangzhou belongs to the subtropical monsoon climate zone and has warm and humid weather. It is suitable to visit all year round and the best traveling time is in spring and autumn seasons, usually during March to early May and September to December .

September - December: this period during the autumn and early winter is the best popular season to visit Guangzhou due to the lots of sunny days and comfortable temperature around 24℃, which is really suitable for outdoor activities and visiting. Sometimes in September, the temperature is still a little high to make you feel hot. As the tourist peak season, many tourists come to Guangzhou, and flight tickets as well accommodation are usually a little higher, especially on the Canton Fair during middle October to early November. However, many shopping malls and markets offer very good discount for your taking of good commodities.

January - February: it is the winter of Guangzhou with the lowest average temperature of a year at around 14℃. It rains not frequently, but still cold with humid. Flight and train tickets are sold very early as the traditional Spring Festival vacation. Round trip tickets are highly suggested to book very early if you are planning to visit Guangzhou during those two months.

March - May: Guangzhou experiences its spring in those three months usually. Temperature rise up to about 20℃ to offer warm feeling, which is suitable for outdoor visits. However, it usually becomes a little hot from middle May. Hotel discounts are offered to attract guests, but vacancies are limited for Canton Fair during middle April to early May. It is good to visit tourist sites with fewer crowds if you do not mind the light rains.

June - August: the three months belongs to the summer season of Guangzhou, with high temperature up to around 30℃, sometimes even up to 38℃. It rains cats and dogs sometimes suddenly, but changes to sunny not after long. Summer is also the typhoon period of Guangzhou, but it occurs not very frequently. However, as it will disappoint your trip once happened, visitors are highly advised to check the real-time temperature before leaving for Guangzhou. Furthermore, student visitors gather there for summer vacation, and rates for flights and hotels usually rise during those months.

Canton Fair is usually held twice a year, from middle April to early May and middle October to early November, when a lot of people rush to Guangzhou for the exhibition and conference, so regular travelers are not recommended to visit Guangzhou during those time in order to avoid the crowds and higher prices of flight/train tickets and room rates.

Do I Need a Visa for Guangzhou?

Guangdong Province has implemented the 144 hour visa free transit policy since May 1, 2019, so qualified visitors from the specified 53 countries holding a connecting ticket (usually flight ticket) to a third country/region with confirmed seat, date within 144 hours can enter Guangdong Province from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport or Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport and visit Guangzhou and the whole Guangdong Province no more than 6 days without applying for Chinese Visa. This policy allows visitors exit Guangdong Province only from the 32 valid ports in Guangdong, including airports, railway stations, highways and harbors.

What to do in Guangzhou?

Guangzhou  is the other name of  Guangzhou , the third most populous city in  China  and the largest city in the south of the country. It is part of the  megalopolis of the delta Pearl River , which has more than 50 million inhabitants!

Here is our  guide to things to do and see in Guangzhou , a perfect item for anyone wishing to  visit Guangzhou during a tour  in China !

Visit Guangzhou: the must-sees

1. baiyun mountain.

Located on the outskirts of Guangzhou,  Baiyun  Mountain (literally “White Cloud Mountain”) is the perfect place to have  a panoramic view of the city of Guangzhou  in good weather.

As it is a bit far from the city center of Guangzhou, it is better to  plan a day trip to  go there. You can choose to take the gondola to go up or do it on foot. I advise you in this case to leave the West Gate, which is less touristy and you can ride quietly. Count between 3h and 3h30 to reach the summit.

For the more adventurous, know that it is possible to  go bungee jumping in Baiyun Mountain!  There is even a “double bungee” variant that allows you to jump to 2! The jump height is 45m.

How to get to Baiyun Mountain?

• If you want to walk, it will stop at the metro station “Baiyun Park”, near the west gate.
• To take the gondola, the easiest way is to take the subway to “Guangzhou East Railway Station” and then a taxi.

2. Zhujiang New Town and Huacheng Square by night

Zhujiang New town , which can be reached by stopping at the homonymous metro station, is the business district and  the heart of Guangzhou . Watch the skyscrapers, cross the  Huaxai Road  and walk a few hundred meters to  Huacheng Square . In the evening, hundreds of people gather in this square to  observe the lights of the city  and enjoy the sweetness of Guangzhouese evenings.

The square is  dominated by 2 huge skyscrapers , including the impressive  CTF tower 530m high , and is nicely illuminated on the ground. On the west side is the  Opera House of Guangzhou  and its ultra modern architecture very well highlighted by a mirror of water!

A must see on your trip to Guangzhou.

You will also see in the distance the famous  Guangzhou Tower  lit by multicolored changing lights.

Stroll around, make some selfies with the Chinese who asks you and take some pictures! I advise you to  bring your tripod , which will allow you to make pretty pictures at night.

Then head north for  an underground shopping mall,  green alleyways and small artificial canals, all  dominated by Guangzhou skyscrapers.

If you only have one night and do not know  what to do in Guangzhou , this is the place of interest.

3. Guangzhou Opera House (Guangzhou Opera House)

Designed by architect Zaha Hadid,  the Guangzhou Opera House is a marvel of modern architecture.  If its exterior is impressive, the interior is also worth the detour! Its 1,800-seat concert hall gives you the impression of being in a spaceship!

4. Canon Tower

With its 600m high,  the Guangzhou Tower is in early 2017 the 4th tallest building in the world and the first in China . It is the major tourist attraction of Guangzhou!

You can visit it and climb to the top of the tower and enjoy the observation point. For the bravest, you can try a “sky drop”, a vertical drop controlled over thirty meters at the top of the tower.

The price of tickets varies between 20 and 65 euros depending on the activities you want to do.  You will find a detail of the prices on  this site   (in English)

To get there, simply stop at  Guangzhou Tower subway station  (metro line 3 and APM line)

5. Enjoy Guangzhouese gastronomy

Guangzhou is famous in China for being the city where you eat the best . Enjoy your stay in the city to discover the wonders of local gastronomy. The  Dim Sum  Guangzhouese are particularly famous. While visiting Guangzhou, take a dip in Mangosteen, (山竹 shān zhú in Chinese), a South Asian fruit with a sweet taste!

6. Yuexiu Mountain Park

In Guangzhou, strolling through the parks is a good way to discover the typical Chinese life scenes (Tai chi, dance, badminton, pedalos on the lakes etc.). The  Yuexiu Mountain Park  is the free park’s most famous, thanks to its  statue of five goats , which is the symbol of the city of Guangzhou. It is really big (86 hectares), and you can easily spend half a day there!

The easiest way to get there is to take the metro to  Yuexiu Park Station (line 2)

7. Liu Hua Hu park

Located right next to Yuexiu Mountain Park,  Liu Hua Hu Park  is a great complement for a day of sightseeing! This park is built around a large lake (Liu Hua Lake) and you can walk around or on one of the islands, which are connected by Chinese architecture bridges. Ideal for a stroll along the water!

8. Visit the Temple of the Six Banyan

This temple (English  Temple of the Six Banyan Trees & Flower Pagoda  ), built in 537 during the Liang Dynasty and rebuilt several times since (last in 1900) includes several buildings, the most famous being  the pagoda nine floor . It is now a Buddhist temple, where the Chinese New Year (January 28 in 2017) and the Lantern Festival (February 11 in 2017) are commemorated

You can go to the Six Banyan Temple by subway, you have 3 stations that are roughly equidistant from the temple (about 10 minutes  walk  )  Gongyuanqian, Ximenkou or Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

9. Shamian Island

Shamian Island  is another tourist attraction in Guangzhou.

This island of 24,000 m² is located on the Pearl River was in the 18th and 19th century an important commercial port. It belonged to the 3 / 5th in England and 2 / 5th in France and that’s why you will find all these  buildings of European style ! It has become a favorite place for Chinese young married couples, especially at the  French chapel “Our Lady Lourdes” (Notre Dame de Lourdes).

To go to Shamian Island  : Take subway line 1 to  Huangsha  Station and exit at exit “F”. Then cross the bridge to reach the island.

10. Qingping Market (Qinping Medicine Market)

This amazing market is located in a maze of alleys in  Liwan District , close to Shamian Island. After making the business district of Zhujiang New Town,  it’s like 50 years back!  Plants, spices, mushrooms, dried insects of all kinds and even live animals. I  this is the authentic China, change of scenery!  It is a must see if you are in  Guangzhou  and do not have the opportunity to go to rural China during your trip.

The visit of this market goes very well with the visit of Shamian Island since it is right next to it.

To get there  : Metro stop  Huangsha  or  Culture park .

11. Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Guangzhou

The  Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Guangzhou , built in the nineteenth century and opened in 1888, is a bit like the architectural UFO of the city (or even China!) With its  Neo-Gothic style.

The easiest way to get there is to take  metro line 2 to Hai Zhu station . Then you will have ten minutes walk to reach the cathedral.

12. Guangzhou Fake Market (Guangzhou Fake Market)

If you like to go shopping, here’s another must-see place to visit during your trip to Guangzhou:  The Fake Market.

And yes,  Guangzhou  and its region are primarily a manufacturing province, so you will find here everything you want level  clothing, shoes, jewelry  etc … It is China, so  you will really find any level of quality, copy of low-end brand to the original quality product.

Above all, do not hesitate to  haggle!

The  Fake Market  is located near Guangzhou Railway Station “Guangzhou Railway Station”, on subway line 2. It is close to  Yuexiu Mountain Park and Liuhuahu Park, so it may be a good idea to group these tours on the day.

13. Guangzhou Chimelong Holiday Resort

It is a giant tourist park located south of Guangzhou. To get there, take Metro Line 3 and get off at  Hanxi Changlong Station . You can then take the  bus 304  which will take you to the entrance of the zoo.

Chimelong International Circus

The Chimelong International Circus is the  largest fixed circus in the world  and is also considered  one of the best . When you go there, you’ll really feel like seeing the equivalent of a Hollywood blockbuster circus! Hundreds of the world’s best artists, gorgeous costumes and demented visual effects. It’s an evening you will not forget!

Chimelong Safari Park

This safari park / zoo is considered  the best in Asia , just that! You will find more than  20,000 animals on 130 hectares , including 460 protected species. It is also the Zoo that has the most panda except Chengdu and the most White Tigers! The safari park is divided into 2 zones: one accessible on foot and another where you will have to board a minibus to visit. It is truly  a zoo of exceptional quality  that will delight young and old!

Chimelong Paradise Theme Park

It is simply the largest amusement park in China with  70 attractions  spread over 60 hectares.

Chimelong Waterpark (Chimelong Water Park)

It is  the largest water park in Asia  and one of the largest in the world. The water park is  open from May to October.

Guangzhou Crocodile Park (Chimelong Birds Park)

The  Guangzhou Crocodile Park , which officially changed its name in the summer of 2016 and is now called  Chimelong Birds Park  is the largest crocodile breeding farm in the world with more than  100,000 specimens . In addition to the observation of crocodiles, animal shows and an educational part are also present. You can also taste the  Crocodile meat  in one of the restaurants.

Chimelong Ocean Kingdom

It’s Marineland in Chinese version! (And not the orcs do not have slanted eyes: p)

Chimelong Golf center

A huge golf club! The “extra large” green can accommodate up to 3000 people.

14. Southern China Botanical Garden

The  Botanical Garden of Southern China  is considered by many to be  the best park in Guangzhou . it is located north of the city and is a very nice family visit if you like nature.

The entry price is CNY 20 (about 2.50 euros) and to get there, it is best to  take the metro line 3 to Tianhe Bus Station  and then take  bus 28, 39 or 84  up at the botanical garden.

15. Chen Clan Ancestral Hall

Beautiful buildings that belonged to the  master of the Chen clan . It feels timeless when visiting! Everything is very well preserved without being overrated,  a very beautiful cultural visit to Guangzhou.

16. Take a Night Cruise on the Pearl River (Pearl River Night Cruise)

It’s a great way to get an original view of the city and its illuminated skyscrapers. Different options are available with different types of meals (fruit and tea, buffet, buffet + show etc .. Rates range from 50 CNY to 150 CNY (7 to 20 euros)

Departures are  near Haizhu Square and Yanjiang Road.

Visit Guangzhou in 1 day

If you only have one day to visit Guangzhou, you will have to make choices! Here is the program I recommend:

Start the day with a visit to  Shamian Island

Then continue with the  Qinping Medicine Market , located next door.

You can also visit  the church of the Sacred Heart of Guangzhou , which is not too far.

Then take the subway for a stop, to go to the  Temple of the Six Banians.

In the evening, do not miss the  Zhujiang New Town area  and especially  Huacheng Square . That’s wonderful! The  Guangzhou Tower  is open until 23h, if you want to go up there, the night is the best moment!

Visit Guangzhou in 2 days

In 2 days in Guangzhou, you will have the opportunity to visit the following places of interest, in addition to the first day.

• If it is really beautiful, I suggest you go on an excursion to  Baiyun Mountain , it’s the best.
• If the weather is not as good, check out  Yuexiu Mountain Park  and  Fake Market , which is not far away.

In the evening, you can opt for a  night cruise on the Pearl River.

Visit Guangzhou in 3 days

For your last day in town, you should visit one of  Chimelong Holiday Resort’s  parks  .  If you chose to  visit Guangzhou with children , they will be delighted!

For a spectacular experience, arrive at the tower around 3:30 PM to catch the sunset from its observation deck between 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM. This way, you can witness Guangzhou’s transition from day to evening, making it a preferred choice for many visitors.

Shamian Island (Free)

Throughout history, Shamian Island has been a crucial trading port in Guangzhou. During the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, it served as a vital link between China and overseas trade. After the Opium Wars, it became a concession shared by the British and French, embodying a piece of modern Chinese history and the old concessions.

Shamian Island draws visitors not only with its Western-style architecture but also its scenic surroundings, attracting locals for recreational activities. The island boasts sports clubs and professional tennis courts. Many locals, particularly the elderly, enjoy practicing Tai Chi or even fishing along the banks of the Pearl River here.

Haixinsha Island (Free)

Haixinsha Island is an artificial island located on the Pearl River, covering an area of 55,000 square meters. With its proximity to Flower City Square, it offers stunning views of the Guangzhou Tower across the river. Because of this, it’s a popular spot for many to admire the tower from afar, especially favored by photography enthusiasts.

Additionally, it hosts the annual International Lighting Festival, providing a dazzling view of the Pearl River and making it an excellent destination for a nighttime tour of Guangzhou.

Sacred Heart Cathedral (Free)

The Sacred Heart Cathedral stands as one of the most magnificent surviving twin-spired Gothic-style buildings in China. It’s the largest stone-structured Catholic church in Southeast Asia and one of the four stone-structured Gothic cathedrals in the world, rivaling the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.

This cathedral has a rich history; originally built as the residence of the Viceroy of the Two Guangs in the late Qing Dynasty, it was transformed into a church by the invading British forces in 1863. With its towering spires reaching a height of 58.5 meters, it boasts an imposing presence, constructed entirely from granite. It incorporates nearly all the elements of a Gothic cathedral, featuring early-style stained glass windows and later-style twin bell towers. The cathedral’s facade is graced by a pair of soaring twin stone spires, each housing four large bronze bells imported from France.

Pearl River Night Cruise (From ¥46)

The Pearl River night cruise in Guangzhou is a dreamy experience, an essential must-do attraction for visitors. From White Swan Lake to the Canton Tower, from Haizhu Bridge to Liede Bridge, and from Shamian Island to Haixinsha Island, the cruise offers a panoramic view of many iconic landmarks.

Guangzhou boasts 8 different piers for night cruises, stretching from west to east: Xidi Pier, Provincial Government Pier, Tianzi Pier, Dashatou Pier, Canton Tower Zhongda Pier, Canton Tower Wealth Pier, Haixinsha West Pier, and Haixinsha East Pier. Each pier provides unique sights, so you can choose the one that aligns with your travel itinerary.

Butterfield & Swire's Godowns & Wharf (Free)

Butterfield & Swire’s Godowns & Wharf, originally built by the British firm Jardine Matheson between 1904 and 1908, comprises three T-shaped concrete piers and seven brick-and-wood warehouses. The entire dock area covers approximately 71,000 square meters, with a land area of around 54,000 square meters and a waterfront length of 312 meters.

While preserving the integrity, authenticity, and historical significance of the original dock area, Butterfield & Swire’s Godowns & Wharf has introduced various businesses, including an international wine procurement center, exhibition halls, creative design studios, cinemas, restaurants, yacht clubs, and distinctive bars. The goal is to transform Butterfield & Swire’s Godowns & Wharf into a multifunctional “urban living room” in Guangzhou, integrating cultural creativity, trade exhibitions, sightseeing, leisure, and entertainment.

Baiyun Mountain (￥5)

Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou is a renowned tourist destination that offers a blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and recreational activities. If you’re planning a trip to Guangzhou, Baiyun Mountain is a must-visit attraction. Some of the highly recommended spots inside include:

• Mingchun Valley : Currently China’s largest natural aviary, covering an area of 56,000 square meters, it is a unique place to observe various bird species in a natural setting.
• Nengren Temple : Among the numerous ancient temples on Baiyun Mountain, Nengren Temple is the only one that has been exceptionally well-preserved.
• Moxing Ridge : This is the highest peak on Baiyun Mountain, standing at an elevation of 382 meters and ranking as the highest of over thirty peaks.
• Peach Blossom Ravine : Known for its peach blossom viewing, there is an additional fee of 5 yuan during the peak bloom season, while it’s free at other times.
• Plum Blossom Valley : The park boasts nearly a thousand plum trees of various types, including over 460 fruit plum trees, more than 120 beauty plum trees, 34 spring-blooming plum trees, over 30 apricot trees, and more than 150 cherry trees.

Baiyun Mountain has multiple entrances, with the South Gate (Main Gate) and West Gate being the most popular. These gates are open 24 hours a day and offer a richer array of scenic spots along the way.

Yuexiu Park (Free)

Yuexiu Park boasts a rich history and offers a harmonious blend of natural and cultural attractions, making it a beautifully landscaped municipal park. Comprising 7 hills and 3 artificial lakes, the park features lush greenery with a remarkable greening coverage of 83.48%.

The park not only preserves historical relics from various periods, such as Zhenhai Tower, the Ming Dynasty city wall, the Sifang Battery site, and the Sun Yat-sen Monument but also incorporates modern amenities like the Five Rams Courtyard, Bamboo Grove Leisure Area, and a swimming pool. Here, ancient relics harmonize with contemporary culture, and the natural world dances in tandem with human artistry, creating a captivating environment for all to enjoy.

Liwan Lake Park (Free Admission)

Liwan Lake Park, a district-level cultural and recreational park, spans 278,000 square meters, with a water area of 171,000 square meters and nearly 300 lychee trees scattered throughout.

While not particularly large, the park boasts a serene lake, picturesque pavilions, charming bridges, a central island, and an ancient-style corridor. During the summer, the air is filled with the sweet fragrance of lotus blossoms that grace the lake. The park is a favored gathering place for elderly locals, who can often be seen playing cards, chess, table tennis, dancing, or simply chatting under the shade of the trees.

Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street (Free)

Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street is a collective term for Shangjiu Road, Xiajiu Road, and Dishifu Road, making it one of the liveliest areas in the old city of Guangzhou. Stretching over 800 meters, this bustling street is lined with Lingnan-style arcade buildings. Comparable to Shanghai’s Nanjing Road, it’s a popular destination for dining, shopping, and experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of Guangdong’s old streets.

Yongqing Fang (Free)

Yongqing Fang is a remarkable cultural district situated in the historic Xiguan area of Guangzhou. It stands as the city’s first intangible cultural heritage block, rich in urban heritage and cultural significance. Located on Enning Road, which is famed for its historical and cultural importance, this area is adorned with Guangzhou’s time-honored brands and historic buildings, carrying the cultural memory of the millennium-old commercial capital.

Preserving its historical and cultural legacy, Yongqing Fang has transformed into a destination where visitors can shop, learn, and explore, offering a taste of Guangzhou’s century-old street culture and the enchanting charm of Lingnan culture and art. You can explore Yongqing Fang in about 30 minutes on foot, and it’s filled with cafes, boutique hotels, and nostalgic shops, making it a perfect spot for artistic young travelers to explore and capture memories.

Guangdong Provincial Museum (Free)

Covering a vast area of 67,000 square meters, the Guangdong Provincial Museum stands as the comprehensive provincial museum of Guangdong Province. The museum comprises four main sections: the Historical Gallery, Natural Gallery, Art Gallery, and Temporary Exhibition Gallery.

For a recommended visit, start from the top and work your way down. Begin with the fourth floor, then proceed to the mezzanine on the third floor, followed by the third floor itself. The first and second floors, as well as the mezzanine on the second floor, primarily house cultural and creative areas, dining facilities, and offices.

The fourth floor features exhibits on natural resources and historical culture. The Natural Resources Gallery showcases original minerals and prehistoric biological fossils, making it an educational experience, particularly for children. In comparison to some renowned museums, the Guangdong Provincial Museum has fewer historical cultural relics. If you have a deep interest in historical artifacts, you may want to consider visiting the Western Han-Nanyue King’s Museum.

On the mezzanine of the third floor, there is a permanent exhibition of ceramics. If you’re intrigued by Chinese porcelain, you won’t want to miss the charming and unique ancient porcelain pieces on display. Before you explore, take a look at the large screen in the lobby where volunteers offer free explanations. Listening to these explanations can provide a different perspective and enhance your museum visit.

Western Han-Nanyue King's Museum (￥10)

In June 1983, the tomb of the Nanyue King was excavated, and the Western Han-Nanyue King’s Museum was constructed on the original site of the tomb. This tomb is remarkably well-preserved and represents the largest known Han Dynasty painted stone chamber tomb in the Lingnan region. With over ten thousand excavated artifacts, it provides a comprehensive view of Lingnan’s political, economic, and cultural aspects from two thousand years ago.

The Western Han-Nanyue King’s Museum boasts an impressive architectural area of over 17,400 square meters and primarily showcases the original tomb site and its excavated artifacts. The museum comprises a protected ancient tomb area and a comprehensive exhibition building, featuring ten exhibition halls. Permanent exhibitions include displays of historical artifacts and porcelain pillows, with other rotating exhibitions held periodically. The artifact exhibition is the museum’s centerpiece, showcasing over ten thousand items excavated from the tomb of Nanyue King Zhao Mo. The exhibition covers various themes, such as Emperor Wen’s gold seal and treasures from the main chamber.

Chen Clan Academy (￥10)

Built in 1888 during the Qing Dynasty’s Guangxu period, the Chen Clan Academy stands as one of the best-preserved and most representative examples of late Qing Dynasty civilian architecture in Guangdong. It’s renowned for its distinctive and intricate sculptures. Besides its architectural beauty, the Chen Clan Academy also hosts art exhibitions and displays of historical photographs, providing a unique artistic experience within the old building.

Originally, the Chen Clan Academy served as lodgings for scholars from various regions who came to Guangzhou to participate in China’s imperial examinations. The Chen Clan Academy showcases ancient architectural styles, brimming with the charm of Guangzhou and the Lingnan region. The Chen Clan Academy has been meticulously preserved, making it a must-visit for travelers interested in historical architecture and heritage. Even if you’re not particularly interested in these aspects, you can still explore the serene old building and appreciate the beauty of traditional Chinese architecture.

Yuyin Shanfang (￥18)

Yuyin Shanfang, a private garden of the Qing Dynasty scholar Wu Bin, boasts a history of more than 130 years. It is one of the four exquisite classical gardens in the Lingnan region and ranks among the four famous gardens in Guangdong. The garden’s small, delicate, and ancient layout is rich in artistic features, with every brick, tile, plant, and tree reflecting the architectural talents of Wu Bin.

The layout of Yuyin Shanfang is a visual feast, showcasing numerous elements of classical Chinese gardens. Within its small confines, you’ll find pavilions, towers, halls, bridges, corridors, embankments, hills, waters, and greenery, all intricately arranged within a radius of about 300 steps. The garden features a wide array of artworks, including brick carvings, wood carvings, plaster carvings, and stone carvings, adding vibrant colors to the overall landscape.

Guangzhou Zoo (￥20)

Established in 1958, Guangzhou Zoo is one of China’s three major urban zoos, alongside the Beijing Zoo and the Shanghai Zoo. This zoo is a fantastic destination for family outings, providing an opportunity to educate children about various animals and explore attractions like the Ocean Park and an amusement park.

Guangzhou Zoo houses and showcases over 400 species, totaling more than 5,000 wild animals. Among them are over 40 species of first-level national protected animals, including giant pandas and golden monkeys, as well as more than 60 species of second-level national protected animals like red pandas and white-naped cranes. Additionally, the zoo serves as a botanical garden with over 200 species and 10,000 plants, offering pleasant greenery year-round.

Chimelong Safari Park (￥300)

Chimelong Safari Park is hailed as “China’s top-tier international standard wildlife park.” It is known for its foundation in animal conservation and breeding, with a distinctive feature of showcasing large populations of rare animals from around the world. The park is home to more than 500 species and over 20,000 rare animals.

Notable residents include the “world’s only surviving giant panda triplets: Meng Meng, Shuai Shuai, and Ku Ku,” as well as the largest population of koalas outside of Australia, spanning up to the seventh generation. Chimelong Safari Park has been recognized as a “China Wildlife Conservation and Science Education Base.” If you’re traveling with the family and have children in tow, visiting the zoo is highly recommended as it offers a great opportunity for kids to learn about different animals.

Lingnan Impression Park is surrounded by water on all sides, making the most of its natural geographical advantages and the rich Lingnan folk culture of the original Lianxi Village. In Lingnan Impression Park, you can experience a picturesque village with meandering streams, a tranquil Qingyun Lane, traditional ancestral halls and courtyards, as well as classic nostalgic shops and eateries. Guangzhou Opera House (￥30)

The Guangzhou Opera House is situated at the heart of Guangzhou’s CBD (Central Business District). Designed by the first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize, British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, it resembles two smooth pebbles washed by the Pearl River, showcasing a unique and imaginative architectural style.

Best way to spend 3 days in Guangzhou, China

Planning a trip to China and looking to explore the country beyond the usual Shanghai or Beijing basics? Do you have a long layover at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport? Then, you can consider Guangzhou, the third largest city in China. Known for its breathtaking riverside with towering skyscrapers as the background, Guangzhou also boasts several historical and cultural attractions. It’s a long way to come for just 3 days, but if that’s all you can spare, then this suggested itinerary will be very useful. There are of course numerous other destinations in this city so you might want to mix and match the suggestions below to create your own itinerary.

Things to know before traveling to Guangzhou, China:

Language – Standard Chinese and Mandarin Chinese are the official languages of China. Learning the language is not necessary, especially in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai, but speaking at least some Chinese phrases or attempting to learn is greatly appreciated by the locals.

Currency exchange – Chinese Yuan ( also known as Renminbi ) is the official currency of China. Exchanging money is easy and follows the same standard to elsewhere in Asia. You can exchange currency at the airport, hotels, malls, local banks, and money changers throughout China. ATMs are plentiful, all accepting international credit cards and debit cards, so it’s easy to withdraw your money in CNY. Credits cards are commonly accepted in most mid-range to high-end restaurants and hotels.

Tourist visa – Visitors who have a layover in Guangzhou, China are eligible to get a free 72-Hour Transit Visa. Nationalities from Schengen countries (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland), the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom, Russia, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Brunei, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Australia and New Zealand are qualified to take advantage of 72-Hour Visa Free Transit Policy.

Getting there – Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is located 28 km ( 17 mi ) from the city center of Guangzhou and is one of the main air hubs in China, ranked 3rd in passenger volume. The airport serves flights to and from most major and some smaller cities in China, and some international destinations including Amsterdam , Bangkok , Frankfurt , Hong Kong , Kathmandu , London , Paris , Manila , Melbourne , Moscow , Dubai , Kuala Lumpur , San Francisco , Seoul , Singapore , Taipei , and Tokyo . If you are travelling to Hong Kong and you want to experience a little bit of China, then you can take a direct train from Hong Kong’s Hung Hom Station to Guangzhou Station.

Getting around – Getting around in China is very easy thanks to its comprehensive road system and the subway system. In Guangzhou, taking the subway ( Metro ) is the most convenient and reliable way to get to your destinations. If traveling great distances ( ex. Guangzhou to Xi’an or Guangzhou to Guilin ), you can take a short commercial flight or take an overnight train. Before your trip, make sure to download a map of Metro/China Railways on your smart phone or secure a paper copy.

Accommodation – There are many types of holiday accommodation in China from luxury hotels to cheaper accommodation like youth hostels and bed and breakfast. In Guangzhou, hotels/hostels nearby subway or railway stations are recommended for travelers. You may also stay anywhere near the Beijing Road to get easy access to tourist attractions and dining options.

Day by day itinerary: Best way to spend 3 days in Guangzhou, China

Depending on your time of arrival, you can both take it easy and soak up the atmosphere in the city or you can begin your tour of its famous attractions. Check into your preferred accommodation and rest a little before you start your walking tour.

Make your way to your first destination, Temple of Six Banyan Trees ( Liurong Temple ), which is one of the most famous Buddhist temples in Guangzhou. This temple on Liurong Road was originally built in AD 537 during the Liang Dynasty. When it was ruined by fire during the Song Dynasty, it was only until AD 989 that it was rebuilt. You might be wondering why it’s called Temple of Six Banyan Trees? It’s because a traveler in the year 1100 saw 6 Banyan trees in the temple complex. Those 6 Banyan trees no longer existed today.

Sticking with the history theme, it is best to squeeze in a trip to the Guangzhou Museum , which houses one of the world’s best collections of Chinese art. The museum has a rich and diverse collections of traditional Chinese art from Ming and Qing Dynasty, ancient halls and other objects of cultural and historical significance. Here, you’ll also learn about Guangzhou’s role as the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road to the South China Sea Route.

In the evening, get a taste of Guangzhou’s nightlife at the Binjiang Lu Bar Street and enjoy a fantastic night view of Pearl River . You may also watch Chimelong International Circus , one of the largest permanent circuses in the world. One of the most jaw-dropping shows in China, this cultural extravagance combines Chinese acrobatics, Chinese martial arts, aerial ballet dance, spectacular visuals and live music into one show. Tickets for the show cost 45 USD and this is money well spent.

A trip to Guangzhou would not be complete without a visit to Shamian Island , an elliptical sandbank island bordering the Pearl River located in the Liwan District. During the late 19th Century, the island was used for trade by the British and French companies. As you take the scenic walk along the island, you’ll notice that most of the structures have European architecture.

Another attraction you should not miss is the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall-Folk Craft Museum . Also called Chen Clan Academy, the temple was built by the Chen Clan as an offering to their ancestors and as a place for the next generation to study. Aside from its vast array of heritage, the ancestral temple itself has a magnificent architecture with an equally interesting history.

End the day at Xiaozhou Village , a centuries-old village located in Zhuhai district. Located at the southern outskirts of the city, the village has one of the most beautiful canal systems in China. If you would like to get to know the canal area from a different perspective, then you can join one of the guided tours, which will take you past historic buildings, picturesque bridges, local dumpling shops, quaint coffee shops and art shops.

Everyone knows that Chinese cuisine is among the oldest in the world. It considered as one of the most diverse culinary heritages with thousands of years of development. Second, it offers an insight into the Chinese craftsmanship of various materials. Among the ten great generals of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, five of them came from Whampoa Academy.

Whampoa Museum has two main exhibition halls: the Whampoa history hall and the Whampoa elite oil painting gallery. Inside the Whampoa history hall are more than 200 photographs and 100 historical documents that bring to life the lives and military glory of those who fought against Japanese invaders and wartime warlords. The oil painting room area of the Whampoa elite contains up to 42 remaining oil paintings by great people who studied at the Huangpu Military Academy. They included Sun Yat-sen, Chiang Kai-shek, Zhou Enlai and Liao Zhongkai.
