About Guarri Safaris

Typical three day Baviaanskloof trip with Quarri Safaris.

Day 1. Permits and a packed lunch, juice, coffee/ tea, drinking water and fruit included. No alcohol, but clients are welcome to bring their own. We depart from Patensie at about 9h00 stop at the conglomerate rock profile of queen Victoria and then at the spot where the Gamtoosriver begins.

On the way we talk about farming in the Gamtoosvalley and what time of the year which products are available. The road changed to a gravel road taking us past Comdomo, the office and campsite of provincial parks, thru the Grootriver Poort to the farming community Cambria.

After a permit check at the control point, we enter the Baviaans Wilderness Area enjoying the indigenous forest of Poortjies, crossing the same stream 12 times. The narrow mountainpass take us to Bergplaas where we stop to strech our legs and maybe use the toilet.

The vegetation changed to fynbos and we can see different flowers at different times of the year. Lookout for klipspringer, rooihartebees, mountain zebra and mountain reedbuck.

Going down, we can find bushbuck, buffalo, kudu, eland and baboons. After passing the signbaords for Doodsklip- and Rooihoek campsites, we cross the Baviaansriver for the first time and stop at Smitskraal to enjoy the picknic.

From here we travel another 2-3 hours to the guesthouse or cave, our accommodation for the two nights.

Day 2. Spend a full day in the Baviaans valley to hike in a kloof and hike Nuwekloofpass, visit rock art, visit Sewefontian Wildfig forest, enjoy roosterkoek and tea at Vero's tearoom.

Day 3. Depart via Willowmore. Enjoy something from the menu in a coffee shop in Willowmore and check cell phone messages and calls. Start the journey back via Steytlerville and Uitenhage.

Trees of Kruger Park

guarri safari

A brief overview of the most predominant trees in Kruger Park.

guarri safari

The baobab (Adansonia digitata) is southern Africa's most distinctive tree with its extremely stout, fleshy trunk and widely spreading crown. An African legend holds that a giant child of the gods once pulled the baobab out of the ground and then stuck it back upside down, which accounts for its root-like branches. The baobab can grow up to 25 metres tall and has an astounding longevity - some trees in Kruger are believed to be well over 4 000 years old. The baobab has many uses , particularly because of the tartaric acid in the fruit, which is favoured by man and beast. It has a particularly beautiful white flower which blooms during spring.

Magic Guarri

guarri safari

Red Bushwillow

guarri safari

One of the staple diets of browsers is the red bushwillow (Combretum apiculatum). Found throughout the Park but dominant in the south, this smallish deciduous tree is the second most common tree after mopane. While its leaves are palatable, animals avoid its seeds which are mildly poisonous and can cause prolonged hiccupping. It gets its name from the fact that its leaves turn reddish brown in winter. Its drought resistance ensures that it is a food source for browsers even in the driest of times. It is recognizable by the small four-wing clusters of fruit which ripen in late summer and autumn.

Read more about the Bushwillow

guarri safari

The third most common tree in Kruger Park after the mopane and red bushwillow is the knob thorn (Acacia nigrescens). It is a medium to large tree with a spreading crown, growing up to 16 metres tall. It is most easily recognizable in spring when its bright yellow fl owers liven up the landscape. It has thorn-tipped knobs which are more conspicuous on younger trees. In winter its narrow pods become black (hence the name nigrescens - Latin for "becoming black"). It is a heavy wood with lots of tan nin, grows slowly and is both drought-resistant and sensitive to frost.

Palm Trees in Kruger

guarri safari

There are two main kinds of palm trees in Kruger - the wild date palm (Phoenix reclinata) and the lala palm (Hyphaene atalensis). The wild date palm is more common in the south of the Park on the banks of rivers and spruits. Primates and birds enjoy the clusters of yellow-brown fruit, while elephants eat the leaves and stems. The Lala Palm does well on the basaltic corridor, and is more abundant in the north, and there are some fine examples of these trees around Letaba and Shingwedzi camps . The fibre of both palms has been used traditionally by Shangaan-speakers for making mats and ropes and a fine alcoholic beverage can be brewed from the sap.

The real life magic of magic guarri

Updated: Sep 25, 2023

This blog is by Bushwise Professional Field Guide student Molly Swan. As part of their training, each student submits a researched blog based on a topic of their choice.

South Africa is known to many as a place to visit to see stunning animals such as elephants, rhinos, lions and cheetahs. But if you look closer, you can see and learn so much more. As you immerse yourself, you start to feel calm and revived and you start to ask, why do I feel this way and why does nature have this effect on people?

Those who are spiritual find a deep connection here in the bush and some refer to it as magical. Healing medicinal properties and sacred cultural beliefs stare you right in the face in the form of trees, plants and flowers.

The magic guarri tree

A magic guarri tree against a backdrop of a dam in the African bushveld. This photo was taken by the author.

The magic guarri tree is found all over the bushveld and holds many secrets in its sacred and medicinal ways. Its scientific name is Euclea divinorum. Euclea comes from the Greek word for ‘famous’ (referring to the fine wood) and divinorum is a reference to the medicinal diviners in Africa.

You will often find it alongside thorn bushes, and it does not discriminate with soil type which is why you can spot so many along thickets. You will know it’s a magic guarri because of its dense shrub shape, its pronounced wavy leaves and clusters of berry shaped fruit. The bark also has a greyish-greenish appearance that is lighter than other varieties.

Birds and kudu enjoy snacking on the guarri tree, but most other animals stay clear of this one due to its unpleasant taste.

But why is it called the magic guarri?

A giraffe feeds on the leaves of a guarri tree.

The Zulu culture believes that if you chop down the entire plant their whole kraal – an enclosed shelter for huts or cattle – will be destroyed. In other cultures, they will hang a piece of the branch at the entrance of their homes to repel witches and evil spirits. It is also believed that if you carry a piece of the plant with you, it will bring you good luck, and it might even help you find that special animal you have come all the way to South Africa to see.

Making an infusion or powder from the roots of the tree, the guarri is said to have many medicinal properties. These include but are not limited to treatment for headache and toothaches, constipation, diarrhoea, convulsions, and infertility. It can also relieve abdominal pains and pains during pregnancy.

Practical uses of guarri

A Bushwise student and trainer cew on the stem of a Magic Guarri tree, turning it into a tooth brush (one of the plant’s many practical uses in the bush).

One of the most creative ways you can use the guarri is by using it as a toothbrush. Scrape away the outer bark of the branch and expose the green. Then place the branch in your mouth and start chewing, you will then notice the ends start to separate into nature’s own toothbrush. Of course, if nature provides a toothbrush, it must also provide toothpaste? Indeed, it does! From the ash of the leadwood tree – which is now a protected tree.

The roots are also used in other creative ways such as using the dark brown dye for basket ware, brewing beer and even lipstick. The fruit from the tree makes a beautiful purple dye. Because the wood is hard and somewhat heavy, it used to be used to make fence posts, mine props, hoes and railway sleepers.

The magic doesn’t stop here. If a fire breaks out and there is no fire truck nearby, you can use one of the guarri’s branches with leaves on it to beat out the fire. This works because of the shiny, waxy coating on the leaves that do not fall off easily. It looks similar to a broom when in action.

There are indeed three other types of guarri that we have seen here in the Lowveld: common (Euclea undulata), blue (Euclea crispa) and Karoo (Euclea ovata). Just as beautiful but perhaps not as ‘magical’.

So next time you are in the bush look for the magic guarri and see what luck it brings you!

A good place for a ‘stoep-sit’ – Steytlerville, Eastern Cape

S S teytlerville in the Eastern Cape is the kind of town where you can do absolutely nothing. It’s also a place enjoy a Saturday cabaret and learn about the night skies, how angora farming works and how to pluck a goose for her down feathers.

The first thing you should learn when you visit the Karoo – South Africa’s dry heartland – is the time-honoured art of ‘ stoep -sitting’ (sitting on the verandah).

Stoep -sitting means a lot more than parking on a porch and doing nothing.

Yes, there’s a lot of doing nothing involved, but you have to do nothing in a meaningful way when you stoep -sit in the Karoo . T here’s meditation, reflection and intense chatting involved, along with complete and utter inactivity except for the occasional raising of a glass of red wine in honour of a fine Karoo sunset.

And if you're stoep -sitting in Steytlerville in the Eastern Cape, you're doing it in arguably the stoep -sitting capital of South Africa.

Its massive porches, wide streets, bull-nosed Victorian verandahs and polished floors – combined with its inherent lack of urgency – put it way up there in the stoep -sitting stakes.

And there’s always something to talk about in Steytlerville . There’s always something going on in this town of artists and retired folk.

Like , what are the boys out at the Kar r oo Theatrical Hotel up to this Saturday night? Another innovative cabaret performance by Dame Leyla Lamborghini?

And what’s happening at the Royal Hotel? The place is packed with bikers, their machines gleaming, and leather and club patches galore.

And young Danie Craven, grandson of the Springbok rugby legend, what’s he doing out at Noorspoort Farm, where it’s a delight to wake up on a winter’s morning under a duck-down duvet and contemplate a day of patting farm animals and reading a thick book?

There goes Jan Pampoen (Pumpkin), cycling to the local golf course to hunt for earthworm mounds ( Steytlerville earthworms – rumoured to be the longest in the world – can measure up to 2m).

Anyway, Jan’s off to find a couple of these giant earthworms. He cuts them up and sells them for bait.

So , as we open another bottle of pinotage , we settle in on this evening for another session of world-class stoep -sitting, right here in Steytlerville ...
