Depending on the style that you choose, you have two options: you can go for a full leather bag, or you may get a canvas model with leather trim. Is It Hard to Get a Hermès Garden Party Bag?

Hermès Garden Party are not quota bags, which means that theoretically you can walk into an Hermès boutique and simply buy one. If you’re lucky enough you can also simply find one at Hermes.com and just order it online – see our guide on how to do that .

We’ve noticed that in the last few years all Hermès bags had a surge in popularity and none are particularly easy to get. The chances are very high that you will need to contact Hermès directly so that they may put you on the list for delivery. The Garden Party 30 and Garden Party 36 are still relatively easy to get if we compare them with quota bags like Birkin, Kelly and Constance bags.

However, things are a bit different with Hermès Garden Party 49, as one cannot seem to find it through boutiques anymore. It was likely discontinued, or at least taken off the shelves, like the Hermès Garden Party 50 was. So, your best chance for getting one of the larger models is to contact Hermès directly or to purchase a second-hand piece from a reliable source.

Hermès Garden Party Resale Value

The resale value of the Hermès Garden Party bag will depend on the type of bag that you are going for. The more popular the bag, the higher the resale value will be . Hermès has an average value retention of 103% , but this mainly depends on the bag (Kelly and Birkin bags have the highest value). The resale value may also depend on the bags’ boutique availability.

For instance, as the Garden Party 30 and Garden Party 36 are still available through stores, their resale price may be lower than what you could get for a new one. Garden Party 49 may not be as easy to get anymore, which means its value might grow in the following years. Special edition Hermès bags also seem to sell for more – this is the case for the limited-edition picnic collection Garden Party Bags. The rarer they are, the better their resale price might be in the future.

How cool would it be to go shopping with a Hermès bag in your hand? Let this dream come to reality with the Hermès Garden Party – the ultimate tote from Hermès. Released in 1964, the Garden Party is one of the most popular Hermès handbags outside their top 3 (Birkin/Kelly/Constance). Praised for its impeccable craftsmanship, low-key appearance and relatively affordable price point, the Garden Party is a top pick among first-time Hermès handbag buyers and those Hermès lovers looking for a practical everyday handbag. Hermes Garden Party Tote Design

The appeal of the Hermès Garden Party tote lies in its simplicity. The bag features no obvious logo’s; pretty much the only way you can identify it’s from Hermès is by looking closely at the engraving on the Clou de Selle snap closure. That’s, actually, one of the most notable features of the Garden Party and one of its biggest advantages. The snap closure means that the capacity of the handbag isn’t confined to its dimensions, so larger items can also be carried, if needed.

Unlike other Hermes handbags, the Garden Party comes with canvas-lined interior. While not as luxurious as leather-lined interior, the canvas interior also has its benefits. The biggest benefit of canvas is that it makes the handbag significantly more lightweight. It also adds to bag’s practicality and affordability. You know the Garden Party would most likely be way more expensive if it came with leather interior!

The minimalistic and understated design of the Hermès Garden Party makes it a perfect handbag for those who prefer to stay away from screaming logos. However, this minimalist aesthetic also means that you can easily put your own spin on the bag by, for example, accessorizing it with one of Hermes’ bag charms or twilly scarves. And that’s the beauty of the Hermes Garden Party tote. Even the simplest accessory gives it a totally different look.

Designed with functionality and practicality in mind, the  Hermès Garden Party tote can be carried by hand, on the crook of the arm and over the shoulder (this applies to larger sizes of the bag). I’d say, the only disadvantage of the bag is that there’s no feet on the bottom. For me, it’s not a deal breaker, but it’s always nice when a handbag has feet, as they protect the bottom from wear and tear.

You may be wondering, why to go to Hermès for a basic tote when there are a plenty of cheaper designer alternatives out there? While this is certainly a valid point to make, try to name another brand with craftsmanship like Hermes’s? All Hermès handbags are created by one artisan from start to finish. That’s something you rarely see at other brands. And that’s what makes Hermès handbags so desirable. They are made to last.

Hermes Garden Party Materials

The Hermès Garden Party comes in two different styles: full leather, or canvas with leather trim. The most commonly used leather on the Garden Party Tote is called Negonda.

Developed specifically for the Garden Party lineup, the Hermès Negonda leather is characterized by large grains and matte finish. In addition, the Hermès Negonda leather is tough and water resistant. Seems like a perfect leather to use on a tote bag!

You can also find the Hermès Garden Party in Epsom and Country leathers. A relatively new addition to the Hermès leather lineup, the Hermès Country Leather is a processed female calf leather, most known for its firmness, large grain and durability.

Epsom leather, on the other hand, has been out there for quite a while. Commonly used in Kelly and Constance bags, Epsom leather is characterized by a pressed cross-hatch grain and semi-matte appearance. Completely scratch and water resistant, the Epsom one of the most, if not the most hard-wearing leather from Hermès.

The canvas styles of the Hermès Garden Party come feature a canvas body with contrasting leather handles and trimming. Hermès make the Garden Party tote in three types of canvas: officier, military and twill. Both canvas and leather versions of the Garden Party tote come with the canvas interior.

Hermes Garden Party Tote Sizes

In addition to two different styles, the Hermès Garden Party tote also comes in three different sizes. The smallest of them, the Garden Party 30 (also known as Small), is perfect for everyday. It measures 30cm in length, 21cm in height and 13cm in depth (11.8” x 8.3” x 5.1”) and is excellent for carrying all your day-to-day essentials, like a smartphone, a card case, an agenda, sunglasses and a small make-up bag.

The second size of the Hermès Garden Party tote, the Garden Party 36 (also known as Medium) is better suited for running errands, work and travel. Measuring 36cm in length, 26cm in height and 17cm in depth (14.2” x 10.2” x 6.7”), the bag is excellent for carrying anything from a laptop to smaller everyday essentials.

The Garden Party 49 (also known as large), which, by the way, typically comes in canvas, is more of a heavy-duty bag. Measuring 49cm in length, 36cm in height and with 25cm depth (19.3” x 14.2” x 10”), the Garden Party is best suited for travel, and especially, as a weekender bag.

The three different sizes of the Hermès Garden Party tote:

It’s important to notice that Hermès used to make the Garden Party in both smaller and larger sizes than the one’s available right now, but those have since been discontinued. I don’t think I can list them all, but I can try to name a few. For example, the Garden Party 39. It looks like Hermès don’t make this size anymore. Similarly, the Garden Party 50 is no longer available through boutiques, so it’s most likely it has been discontinued. However, I wouldn’t be so sad about it. We’ve seen Hermès bringing back the discontinued sizes in the past, so maybe one day we’ll see the Garden Party 39 and 50 bags back in stock.

As you can see, the price of the Hermès Garden Party largely depends on its material. Canvas bags are cheaper, while full leather versions are significantly more expensive. At the time of writing this blog post, the Garden Party 30 in Negonda calfskin retails for $3,550 in the U.S., while the Garden Party 30 in canvas (twill h canvas with negonda leather trim) is $2,200. The price difference between the two bags is, obviously, impressive. Getting the bag in canvas would save you whopping $1,350. The price difference between the canvas and leather Garden Party 36 bags is also over $1,000. The Garden Party 36 bag in canvas retails for $2,450, while the leather version will cost you $3,750. The Garden Party 49 Voyage bag retails for $4,375.

Final thoughts:

With a starting price tag of just over $2,000, the Hermès Garden Party makes for an excellent entry-level Hermès handbag. A tote bag is one of those silhouettes that’s constantly in use. So, you’re sure to get your money’s worth.

In my opinion, even leather versions of the Garden Party tote are quite reasonably priced. The Garden Party 36 is comparable in size to the Birkin 35, but it’s so much cheaper. In fact, the Negonda Calfskin Garden Party 36 is basically a third of the cost of the Birkin 35 (B35 in togo leather currently retails for $12,200). You could say that with the Hermès Garden Party, you get the same iconic Hermès craftsmanship, but for a fraction of the price.

An Introduction to Hermès Purses

The Hermès brand was born in 1837 when Thierry Hermès founded a harness workshop in Paris. The company’s mission was to create equestrian leather goods for European nobles. In 1900, Hermès introduced its first purse to consumers: the Haut à Courroies (aka the HAC). This bag was designed specifically to carry riders’ saddles. In the 1920s, Hermès grew to include accessories, clothing, purses, and travel bags. In 1935, the Kelly – then called the Sac à Dépchêches – was introduced, followed by the Constance in 1959, and the Birkin in 1984. Hermès has always possessed an unwavering commitment to quality and their leather goods are still handmade by highly trained artisans today.

1 | The Hermès Birkin: Timeless and Most Coveted

The most coveted Hermès purse is the iconic Birkin . Named after actress and “it girl” Jane Birkin, this timeless Hermès purse comes in many colors, materials, and sizes. The bag was conceived by the starlet and Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas on an Air France flight where Jane urged him to create a Hermès purse with greater functionality. The four most popular sizes of the Birkin are the Birkin 25, Birkin 30, Birkin 35, and Birkin 40 (the original size). Even at its smallest, the Birkin 25 can fit all your necessities including phone, wallet, sunglasses, and keys. The Birkin has been a highly coveted bag since the late 1980s, thanks to its timeless design, popularity among A-listers, and limited availability. Hermès stores are only allowed to buy a select number of Birkin bags bi-annually and the styles of Birkin are rarely known before their delivery to the boutique. 2 | The Hermès Kelly: Sophisticated Classic

The oldest and most classic Hermès purse is the Kelly bag . Frequently described as the Birkin’s older sister, and originally named Sac-à-Dépêches, this Hermès Kelly purse was a favorite of actress-turned-princess Grace Kelly, who used it to hide her pregnancy from paparazzi. The Princess of Monaco is credited with popularizing this particular Hermès purse, so much so that it was officially renamed for her in 1977. The Kelly bag comes in two styles: Kelly Sellier and Kelly Retourne. The differences are the stitching and the edges: a Kelly Sellier has visible stitching and a pointy edge, while the stitching on the Kelly Retourne is not visible and its edges are soft. A Sellier is a more structured, rigid bag thanks to the hard leathers artisans use to craft this Hermès purse. A Retourne is created using softer leathers, giving it a more casual look, and allowing it to fit slightly more than a Sellier. Available in smaller, trendier sizes, like the Kelly 15 and the Kelly 20, this Hermès purse comes in medium sizes, such as the Kelly 35, and large sizes, like the Kelly 50. There is an ongoing debate among Hermès purse collectors as to whether the Kelly or the Birkin are more functional, but one thing is for sure: Kelly purses are for the luxurious sophisticate who wants to add an iconic Hermès purse to their wardrobe.

3 | The Hermès Constance: Simple and Luxurious Design

The Constance is a versatile Hermès purse worn comfortably over the shoulder and secured with the simple and functional “H” clasp. The bag’s designer, Catherine Chaillet, was pregnant whilst designing the bag, eventually naming it after her daughter, Constance. Chaillet’s design includes a strap that can be adjusted to make the bag hang long or short. In addition to the standard Constance 24, this Hermès purse comes in mini and micro models as well as a rectangular model called the “Elan.” The micro contains only one interior compartment, but buyers of other sizes have the option of a single or double interior compartment. 5 | The Hermès Evelyne: Equestrian Essential Turned Luxury Bag

These perforations allow air to circulate the bag, drying wet combs, brushes, and picks. The Hermès Bolide’s sleek design was intended for top drivers and world travelers. The Hermès Bolide’s trapezoidal shape fits easily into sports cars or luggage. The zip closure was discovered by Hermès CEO Emile-Maurice Hermès during travels to America. Upon touring Henry Ford’s factory, Hermès was struck by the zipper device he saw on the cloth top of a car. Suitably inspired, Hermès returned to France with a zipper patent and dubbed the bag born out of this discovery le sac pour l’auto, which is now the Bolide and a more minimalistic version called the 1923. This Hermès purse’s design meets at the intersection of classic beauty and function. The removable shoulder strap and rounded shape emphasizes the Hermès purse’s practicality. Hermes Garden Party 36 Review – 10 FAQs answered

If I had to create a list of 5 all-time favourite bags of mine, Hermes Garden Party 36 would certainly be close to the top spot. The bag perfectly encapsulates the concept of a relaxed, unpretentious and timeless design which also happens to benefit from the exquisite craftsmanship offered by one of the world’s leading fashion houses. It almost sounds too good to be true! Indeed, there is no better entry-level option for fashionistas who wish to get a taste of Hermes luxury without breaking the bank.

I bought my Garden Party 36 over year ago and I have been enchanted with the style ever since. Admittedly, it took some time to convince myself to invest in the bag. At that time, I had already owned some of the more sought-after Hermes styles and was unconvinced whether Garden Party would be able to match the hypnotic charm of the Birkins or the Kellys . As it happened, I was wrong and stupidly snobbish in my thinking. Not only did Garden Party turn out to be one of the best fashion investments I have ever made. In fact, ever since I got it, I have been trying to convince everyone (or anyone who would listen) that this simple but fabulous bag is not given enough credit and should be the staple of any designer handbag collection.

As a total Hermes Garden Party convert, in this review I am going to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the luxurious tote. I will focus both on the the general characteristics of the Garden Party design as well as specific aspects of the 36 bag. Hopefully, it should convince those still thinking of investing in one of these pieces, that Garden Party is the bag for you.

Why is Hermes Garden Party bag so popular?

There are several attributes which make Hermes Garden Party bag such a popular choice.

Firstly, there is the versatility of the design. Garden Party bags are available in many different colours, finishes and sizes, so it easy to find a style which appeals to individual taste. One can choose between all-leather or canvas finish with calfskin or cowhide trimmings. While the canvas version is visually appealing and relaxed in appearance, the leather option is slightly more formal and hard-wearing. Whether you are looking for a functional office bag or a casual shopper design, there is always something to choose from in the Garden Party range.

The bag’s appeal is also rooted in the simplicity of the design, which is charmingly low key. There are no obvious logos, no visible signs indicating that the bag originates from Hermes. It is a minimalistic, understated style, perfect for those who prefer to stay away from ostentatious displays screaming “designer bag”.  However, this blank canvas can be personalised and accessorised with one (or many!) of Hermes’ colourful charms and twillies, which can be easily attached to the luxurious bag to make it look just a bit more special.

A notable feature of Hermes Garden Party bag is, likewise, its practicality. The soft structure of the tote offers generous interiors which can contain plentiful personal items. There is no top flap, only a clip closure, which means the capacity of the bag is not rigidly confined to its core dimensions and it can be overfilled, if needed. What is more, the Clou de Selle snap fastening system – connecting sides of the bag and thus creating the narrower opening and wider base – can be unclipped. This creates exceedingly generous, additional space which comes in extremely handy at times when you need to carry extra items, notably during travel or shopping.

There is also the very attractive price point. Anyone familiar with Hermes will know that their designs are notoriously expensive. It would be fair to say that, on average, to score most of their bags you would need the minimum of £4,000 (as of 2020 in the UK). By contrast, the starting price for a Garden Party tote is approximately £1,500 (that is Garden Party 30 in canvas). That is a very considerable disparity. While £1,500 is still a significant amount to pay for a handbag, when it comes to Hermes, it seems like a great bargain considering the exquisite finish and craftsmanship offered by the fashion house. What are the sizes of Hermes Garden Party bags?

Garden Party bags are available in three different sizes. The dimensions of Hermes Garden Party 36 , as shown in this post, are 36 cm in length, 26 cm in height and 17 cm in width (that’s circa 13.5″ x 10″ x 6.5″ in inches). Garden Party 36 is the medium version of the bag and, arguably, the most popular one too.

Those who like the appearance of the tote, but are not entirely enamoured with its size, can choose a smaller or a larger version. The smaller option, Garden Party 30 , measures 30 cm x 22 cm x 12.5 cm (12″ x 8.5″ x 5″ in inches).  By comparison, Garden Party 49 (the so-called Voyage bag), which is the largest version of the tote, measures 49 cm x 36 cm x 25.3 cm (in inches, that’s 19.5″ x 14′ x 9.5″). What can fit into Garden Party 36?

In short, everything you need and so much more! Hermes Garden Party 36 can easily contain an iPhone, large wallet, cosmetic pouch, tissues, hand cream, TangleTeezer brush, hand sanitiser, headphones and plenty of other small objects. If you unclip the sides, Garden Party 36 will also easily hold an A4 file, change of shoes and a book. Honestly, as far as space goes, the tote is absolutely fantastic.

The below image shows what I would usually carry inside of my 36 tote. As you can see, there is still plenty of room left for other personal items. For the purpose of this photo, I deliberately have not used any bag organisers. This provides a much better view of the ample inner space that is on offer in this design. How to wear Hermes Garden Party 36?

Garden Party 36 is a large design and its size precludes it from being a contender for crossbody wear. Hence, no real surprise, that there are no shoulder strap attachments. 

The most natural way of carrying the bag is by top handles. Although sizable, the drop of Hermes Garden Party 36 is not too low. I am 5’5” and the bag reaches below the knee level to the mid-ankle, when held that way.

The loops of the handles are also generous enough to allow the bag to be carried on the shoulder. While this may not be the most comfortable way of holding such a large tote, an option to go hands-free is always appreciated.

As an alternative, Garden Party 36 can be carried on the forearm or in the crack of the elbow. Personally, I find this to be the most convenient way of holding the bag, which makes accessing essentials very easy. It is also, in my opinion, the most alluring way of presenting Garden Party 36. How to authenticate Hermes Garden Party bag?

While I do not hold myself out to be an expert on authenticating Garden Party bags, I am happy to share some tips on what to look out for in the recent versions of the tote.

Firstly, there are no holograms or other sewn in serial numbers which could be used to establish if the bag is genuine. Instead, Hermes use a blind stamp system from which we can determine the age of the tote, and which also includes an ID of the artisan who worked on the bag. In Garden Party, the stamp is embossed on one of the inner leather strips running vertically along the side of the bag. In case of the leather version of the bag, which has an inner pocket, if we view the interiors with the pocket closer to us, the stamp is positioned on the left-hand side. It can be found under the words “ Hermes Paris, Made in France ” visibly imprinted near the top of one of the vertical straps.

I have previously shared information on how to decipher the date stamp in Hermes Birkin bags in an earlier post so I will not be restating it in this review, but you can access it by clicking here . In a nutshell, the date when the bag was released is denoted by a single letter or a letter encased in a geometric shape, for earlier designs. For example, I purchased my Garden Party 36 in early 2019 and therefore the blind stamp reads “D” which corresponds with that specific year.

Other things to look out for in ascertaining whether the bag is authentic include the internal zipper (this is relevant only to the leather version of the bag as it has an inner pocket). In a genuine Garden Party, the metal slider of the zipper has the word “Hermes” engraved on each side of metal and is finished with a leather pull matching the colour of the bag. The bottom stop of the zipper is shaped distinctly like the letter “H”. In addition, each top side of the snap closure should be engraved with the words “Hermes Paris”. [ Back to Intro ]

How to clean Hermes Garden Party bag?

As mentioned earlier, Garden Party bag is available in two finishes, i.e. leather and canvas. In the leather tote, the interior walls are coated with a light beige chevron canvas lining. In the canvas bag, there is no additional protective layer of the interior walls, so the outer canvas effectively lines up the interiors of the bag. Whichever finish you opt for, there is always the risk that the at some point the inner or outer canvas may become stained or dirty.

Should an accident occur, I would strongly recommend staying away from commercial cleaning products because these can cause further damage to the beautiful tote. Instead, you can take the bag to one of Hermes’ boutiques where it can undergo professional cleaning. The Hermes Spa service, as it is commonly known, can fix most issues stemming from the usage of a bag such as stains or discolouration. It can also tackle other, more serious, matters like the damage to stitching or piping.

The slight downside of the bag restoration service is the timing. On average, it takes about 12 weeks for the turnaround, which may seem like a long time. On top of that, the service is not free of charge. However, the results are excellent, so where the staining or damage are quite substantial, it is definitely an option worth considering.

To prevent issues from occurring in the first place, my advice would be to invest in a bag liner as soon as you can. When it comes to this style, they are truly indispensable. A good liner/organiser will protect the delicate interiors of the Garden Party tote and help to maintain its structure. It will also provide additional storage space as the tote does not have any inner compartments. In fact, the zip up pocket only features in the leather version of the tote. Garden Party in part-canvas and part-leather has none.

Hermes organisers, such as the Fourbi Pouch , can be a good option for the bag but they are a bit pricey, starting at £390 for the smallest version. Alternatively, you can pick up a cheaper option from one of many companies selling liners for designer handbags online. Some of them make organisers specifically for the Garden Party style. They are definitely a must-have for this style of a bag! [ Back to Intro ]

Is Garden Party 36 better than Birkin 35?

While Birkin enjoys the undisputed status as one of the fashion world’s most sought-after handbag designs, Garden Party shares some commonalities with the famous style. As such, it may be the perfect choice for those who are unable to get their hands on a Birkin but still dream of owning a piece of Hermes sparkle. Arguably, certain aspects of the Garden Party bag make it the better option of the two.

For anyone wondering whether Hermes Garden Party 36 can rival the one-and-only Birkin 35, I have put together a comparison of the key features of both totes, below:

What is the best place to buy Hermes Garden Party?

While some seasonal versions of the Garden Party tote can be found in Hermes boutiques, the more sought-after colours and finishes are much harder to come by. Anyone looking for shades such as Etoupe, Gold or Black, especially in Nagonda calfskin or Country cowhide leather, will be rather lucky to come across them in a store. These versions of Garden Party are immensely popular and sell out very quickly.

From my own experience, there is much better chance of finding the Garden Party tote you like in the Hermes boutique online . If you have set your heart on a specific colour, especially one in high demand, I would recommend regularly visiting the brand’s online store. However, bear in mind that Hermes update their stock on an ad hoc basis, so it is difficult to predict when a sold-out item may become available again. If you are committed to buying the bag, it is best to check the website daily.

The one thing to remember about ordering from Hermes online is to be quick. Any new inventory posted on the site is usually very limited. We are literally talking about only a few pieces. Therefore, if you are lucky enough to come across the bag you like, don’t wait and get it immediately because they sell out incredibly fast. Take my word for it. After weeks of refreshing Hermes website a few times a day, I was ecstatic to finally find the unicorn, Garden Party 36 in Etoupe. However, when I tried to add it to my basket, someone else had already snapped it up. Luckily, at the time they also had the Gold colour, so I settled for that, but I was flabbergasted how quickly Etoupe run out of stock. [ Back to Intro ]

Is Hermes Garden Party 36 worth it?

Absolutely, 100 per cent yes! As far as designer bags go, Hermes Garden Party 36 is one of the best bag purchases I have ever made. The quality of finish is superb so it is quite clear that the tote will keep its shape for many years to come. On top of that, the bag is exceptionally practical so you will end up getting your money’s worth through continuous use. It is true that the delicate interiors require a little bit of care, but any potential issues can be easily prevented with a good bag liner/organiser.

Overall, the tote is a fantastic investment so if you are looking for a beautifully crafted, large and durable everyday bag which offers a piece of Hermes magic at a reasonable price, Garden Party 36 is the bag for you. [ Back to Intro ]

For Hermès , what began as a maker of leather equestrian goods for European noblemen would eventually grow into one of the most storied fashion labels in the world. In 1837, German-born French entrepreneur Thierry Hermès opened a saddle and harness purveyor in Paris. Gradually, the house extended into accessories and luggage for its riders, and today, in paying homage to its origins, the family-run luxury brand resurfaces horse motifs in everything from clothing and modernist jewelry to pillows and handbags .

The first top-handled bag ever produced by Hermès was the Haut à courroies, which made its debut in 1892. A tall bag secured with a folded leather flap (fastened with bridle-inspired straps), it was designed to transport riding boots and a harness. As the world made the switch from horse to automobile, the bag adapted, becoming a multifunctional travel satchel instead of a designated saddlebag. Today, 120 years later, the HAC remains in Hermès’s line — and its distinctive flap and clasping straps have laid the groundwork for some of the house’s other iconic bags.

In the 1930s, Robert Dumas (son-in-law to Émile-Maurice Hermès, Thierry’s grandson) designed a smaller, trapezoidal take on the flap bag with a handle and two side straps. Later, actress Grace Kelly, then engaged to Prince Rainier of Monaco, is said to have used one of these bags to conceal her pregnancy during the 1950s. Because she was photographed constantly, the coverage catapulted her handbag to international popularity . In 1977, Hermès officially renamed the model for her, and the Kelly bag was born. Each Kelly bag takes between 18 and 25 hours to produce, and its 680 hand stitches owe solely to one Hermès artisan .

Robert Dumas was also responsible for another one of the brand’s most iconic offerings: the launch of its first silk scarf on the occasion of Hermès’s 100th anniversary in 1937. Based on a woodblock designed by Dumas and printed on Chinese silk, the accessory was an immediate hit.

Today, vintage Hermès scarves , typically adorned in rich colors and elaborate patterns, serve many functions, just as they did back then. Well-heeled women wear it on their heads, around their necks and, in a genius piece of cross-promotion, tied to the straps of their Hermès bags. Kelly even once used one as a sling for her broken arm.

In 1981, Robert Dumas’s son Jean-Louis Dumas, then Hermès chairman, found himself sitting next to French actress and musician Jane Birkin on a plane, where she was complaining about finding a suitable carryall for the necessary accoutrements of motherhood. After the two travelers were properly introduced, Birkin helped design Jean-Louis’s most famous contribution to the Hermès canon: the Birkin bag , a roomy, square catchall with the HAC’s trademark leather flap top and the addition of a lock and key. Owing to the brand’s legendary commitment to deft, handcrafted construction, the Birkin is an investment that is coveted by collectors everywhere .

While the Kelly and Birkin may be standouts , gracing the arms of everyone from royal heiresses to hip-hop stars in the past few decades, the handbags are but a small part of Hermès’s fashion offerings. Since the 1920s, the brand has produced some of the most desirable leather goods in the world. There’s the Constance bag , a favorite of Jacqueline Kennedy, the recently relaunched 1970s-era Evelyne and, on the vintage market, a slew of designs dating back to the 1920s.
