Pioneering World Firsts

We proudly pioneered the first commercial treks of Mount Kilimanjaro‘s Remote Northern Circuit and Shira Routes and have developed new trekking routes in the Ruwenzori, High Atlas and Simien Mountains. Our Madagascar Adventure also gets plenty of attention for its unique itinerary.

Quality equipment

Adventure travel by its very nature will put you amongst the elements. You’ll be comforted to know that our camping based treks are supported by quality equipment, starting with tents, sleeping mats, kitchen services, dining tent with chairs and tables and safety equipment.

Choose from a range of quality accommodations

Whether you plan to camp, prefer a lodge based trip, or are looking for luxury, we offer a wide range of African adventures to suit various budgets and interests. We can also tailor a trip to suit your needs.

Innovative itineraries

Africa is a diverse and contrasting continent, encompassed by our broad and exciting program of active, touring and safari itineraries. We constantly strive to highlight the unique—touring Madagascar’s iconic sights but also exploring its lesser know national parks, spotting wildlife from dugout canoes in the Okavango Delta, or traversing the little-used mountain trails of Mount Kenya.

Custom built, reliable transport

Trained drivers and well maintained vehicles, which are purpose built for our safaris, are what you can expect when on the lookout for Africa’s Big 5 game animals. Safari transport is designed with wildlife viewing in mind, providing unobstructed views and in most cases forward facing seats and air-conditioning.

Our all inclusive approach

Including as many quality services at the best prices make our adventures great value for money. Having essential items like meals, sightseeing and national park fees or camping equipment included in the trip cost allows you to better budget for your big adventure and eliminates the risk of having to carry large sums of money around with you on your journey.

Thoughtful Travel

Responsible Travel practices are at the heart of every program we offer in Africa. When you book one of our adventures you’re supporting true sustainability in the protection of local communities, natural environments and wildlife.

Expert Guides

Africa is a complex continent that requires guides with vast knowledge of local landscapes, flora and fauna, as well as rich local cultures. Our line up of guides is second-to-none; passionate individuals who will truly enhance your African experience.

No Single Supplements on treks

Travelling solo? On our treks we’ll match you with another traveller of the same gender so that you won’t be charged anything extra for the vast majority of our treks. If you prefer a guaranteed single room on tour we can also arrange that for a small additional charge.

The remarkable Masai people&#160;-&#160;<i>Photo:&#160;Ian Williams</i>

On a continent rich in wildlife and cultural diversity that is famed for its spectacular landscapes, the importance of sustainable travel is high. While we aim to minimise our impact on the natural environment by practicing the '7 Principals of Leave No Trace', our adventures support local economies by employing guides and staff from local communities. Our Animal Welfare Code of Conduct, Child Welfare Code of Conduct and Porter Welfare Policy ensure the well-being of animals and children we encounter, as well as the porters we employ on Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, Mount Kenya and in the Ruwenzori Mountains.

In cities and large towns you will be accommodated in 3-4 star properties that are generally centrally located, atmospheric and reliable and where we have seen a good track record with traveller satisfaction over many years. At times, accommodation will be chalet style with a bedroom and bathroom attached to a lounge area. Very occasionally, hotels may have shared bathroom facilities.

Safari lodges

In game parks, national parks and rural locations we use properties that reflect the character of the area. They are generally one storey high and will be a collection of individual bungalows or a series of adjoining rooms, based around a central main dining/lounge area.

Luxury safari lodges

Luxury lodges differ to standard safari lodges in that they feature extra facilities such as swimming pools, satellite TVs or rooms with private balconies. You will find this type of accommodation in East Africa at Serene Lodges and at boutique, 4-5 star lodges in Southern Africa.

Found in Morocco, a riad is a traditional house often located in the ancient medina (walled city) and usually includes an internal courtyard with a garden or water feature. Generally all rooms are a different shape and size, adding to the character. Riads range from elaborate traditional tiled decor to ultra modern furnishings.

A homestay describes any stay with a local family where we share their current home. Sleeping arrangements may be dormitory style and bathroom facilities will generally be shared. The standard is often basic but the experience is unbeatable.

Permanent safari camps

The perfect way to experience Africa wilderness; think of this as a tented hotel. Rooms are individual tents with built-in floors, doors and windows and include an en suite bathroom. Tents are usually placed on a solid structure and may also be sheltered under a solid roof. Guest tents are generally clustered around a main central dining/lounge area and power is either solar or by generator.

Luxury permanent safari camps

A luxury permanent safari camp differs to a standard permanent safari camp in that they feature extra facilities such as swimming pools, satellite TVs or rooms with private balconies; all with premium views.

Bedouin camps

Found in desert regions in North Africa and the Middle East, these are permanent safari camps using traditional Bedouin tents and decor. Bathroom facilities may be basic as water is scarce in the desert. Power is limited to specific hours of the day and is usually by generator when available. Kerosene lanterns or candles provide night time lighting, adding to the ambience.

Camping refers to any accommodation using mobile tents, ranging from large dome tents to small trekking tents. The local camp crew erects the tents or, on a limited participation safari, guests are expected to assist with this process. Group camping equipment (dining tent, kitchen tent, toilet tent) is supplied. Bathroom facilities are shared, and on rare occasions, bush toileting may be required.

Mountain huts

Mountain huts can be considered camping in a basic shelter. These generally consist of dormitory rooms with shared bathroom facilities and in the majority of cases are not exclusive to World Expeditions guests. Some mountain huts have cooking facilities that will be used by your crew; others have separate shelters for this.

Come Hiking in Africa - 6 African treks you will love!

Posted by Harriet Purser on June 03 2020 in Adventure Travel & Activities Enquire Now!

During lockdown in South Africa, I've been stuck at home in Cape Town. Like so many others across the globe, I've been unable to escape outdoors. Since I cannot go on my regular hikes, I've been thinking back to the places I have been lucky enough to walk in the past. Reminiscing about all the interesting hikes, climbs and treks, I've done over the years, across the African continent.

Here are some of the most memorable hikes and treks I've done in Africa, from the tallest mountain on the continent to the southern tip of South Africa.

Hiking in Africa on Overland Tours

I did some of my earliest multi-day hikes in Africa while on overland safaris. On one, I hiked up Mount Nyiragongo in the Republic of Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Since I visited, this active volcano has erupted and changed topography several times.

Nyiragongo volcano

Mount Mulanje in Malawi is another amazing hike I did on one of my first overland Africa trips.

Mount Mulanje scenery

On many Overland Africa Tours, you have the chance to climb mountains and do shorter hikes along the way. Ask your tour company or travel agent about the hiking options on various overland tours before you book. There are plenty of game parks where you can do walking safaris these days and numerous tours offering all kinds of walks, hikes and treks as part of your adventure. Chat with one of our travel experts  for guidance.

1. Climbing Kilimanjaro in Tanzania

Let’s start at the top - Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. This is the highest mountain in Africa, known as The Roof of Africa. At 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) Mount Kilimanjaro is on many travel bucket lists.

Mt Kilimanjaro climb

There are several routes to the summit of this free-standing mountain. I have summited Kilimanjaro via two different routes, Marangu and Machame. I hiked in group sizes from 2 to 75 on this iconic dormant volcano. You can choose to camp in tents or stay in huts on different routes.

Kilimanjaro Marangu route huts

The 5 to 8-day hike up Mt Kilimanjaro requires no climbing skills or specialist equipment. Yet you do need to pack for a wide variety of weather conditions. The only reason I pushed myself to the summit a second time was that we had no views the first time due to the clouds. The second time we summited, we had rain and snow all the way up. Luckily, the summit day was clear with spectacular views!

Kilimanjaro summit

For the best trek, climb Kilimanjaro with well-worn hiking gear and a reasonable level of fitness. A willingness to follow your guides' advice will also go a long way. To maximize safety, authorities only allow a limited number of registered companies to operate hikes. These companies are strictly regulated to keep hikers, guides, porters and cooks safe. They provide the guides, porters, cooks and camping equipment for your trek.

Top Tip: Keep one pair of socks and gloves separate and dry for a very long summit day. Clothing that gets wet earlier in the hike doesn’t dry out at altitude.

2. Climbing Mount Meru in Tanzania

Before my first hike on Kilimanjaro, I acclimatized by hiking to the summit of neighbouring Mt Meru, the fifth-highest peak in Africa. Mount Meru is located near Kilimanjaro in the Arusha National Park of Tanzania and is 4,562 meters (14,968 feet) tall.

Mt Meru Kilimanjaro view

This is a shorter hike than Kilimanjaro (at 4 days) and you are accompanied by an armed game ranger due to the presence of wildlife on the lower mountain slopes. There are huts for overnight accommodation on the hike.

Mt Meru huts

This isn’t a technical climb but there are far more exposed ridges than on Kilimanjaro. On Mount Meru, the park ranger has the discretion to cancel the summit attempt for safety reasons in the event of thick fog, rain or if there is too much ice. Like the Kilimanjaro hike, the summit walk starts in the early hours of the morning so that you can walk upon the volcanic ash whilst it is still frozen.

Mt Meru trek view

Top Tip: Take extra new head torch batteries and keep them warm inside your jacket for use a few hours into the summit attempt. Batteries fade quickly at altitude although they’ll work again normally when you are down at lower altitudes.

3. Hoerikwaggo Table Mountain Hike in Cape Town, South Africa

Being based in Cape Town, South Africa , I've done plenty of hiking trails in and around the beautiful mother city. This includes the multi-day hike on iconic Table Mountain.

Hoerikwaggo Hiking Trail, Cape Town

When the Hoerikwaggo Trail in Table Mountain National Park first opened I hiked a section of this stunning trail. The full Trail spans five days with four different overnight huts between the Wash Houses in Cape Town and Cape Point Lighthouse.

Cape point lighthouse

After a night in the comfortable Wash House accommodation, we set off in brilliant sunshine stopping regularly to apply extra sun cream. By the time we were on top of Table Mountain at Maclear’s Beacon (1,086 meters, 3,563 feet) we needed wet weather gear and warm hats. Despite many beautiful photographs and views of Table Mountain with its famous flat top, this hike was the first (but not last) time I discovered that the top of the mountain is made up of a series of ridges and valleys (especially in bad weather these can seem never-ending).

Table Mountain view

We did eventually reach Klipspringer cottage where the fire had been lit and we were fed a tasty and warming dinner. The following morning we explored around the Woodhead and Hely-Hutchinson dams and the Waterworks Museum (which contains a steam train that was manhandled to the top of the mountain to help build the dam walls). Then we left the thick fog behind, descending into a hot and sunny  Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens .

Kirstenbosch Gardens

Top Tip: Even relatively close to sea level a hike can expose you, without warning, to a wide range of weather conditions. Plan the contents of your backpack accordingly so you're prepared.

4. Hiking the Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa

In the Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa , there are also a wide variety of hikes from a few hours to multi-day expeditions. The Drakensberg is the highest mountain range in South Africa. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and arguably the best hiking destination in South Africa.

On my most recent hiking trip, I walked up the Tugela Gorge in the Royal Natal National Park. Then, on the following day, I hiked on the other side of the Amphitheatre.

5. Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Virunga, Central Africa

My first gorilla trekking excursion involved an overnight hike in Virunga National Park starting at the Bukima research station.

Mountain gorilla in Central Africa

Group size is restricted and no one with any symptoms of a cold can visit the gorillas to avoid infecting them. Walking all morning on the second day the guides regularly pointed out various signs showing that gorillas had been in the same area recently but we began to feel we might never see an actual gorilla. It took several hours and on finding a group the rules are strict and no one can stay more than an hour.

That hour of watching a family group of mountain gorillas interact with each other remains one of the highlights of my African travels.

Mountain gorilla in Virunga mountains

Top Tip: Long sleeves and trousers are recommended; despite the heat and humidity there are a lot of nettles amongst the vegetation and the forest paths are narrow.

6. Hiking in Ranomafana Forest, Madagascar

Another hot and humid forest walk can be enjoyed at Ranomafana in Madagascar . Here the mammals that might be seen are lemurs; the park was created after the discovery in the area of golden bamboo lemurs but there are 11 other species of lemurs found in the national park.

Ranomafana lemur Madagascar

Only the very luckiest visitors will see a rare aye-aye. In fact, throughout Madagascar, there are no game drives but only walks through a wide variety of ecosystems to look for extraordinary wildlife. Ranomafana (meaning hot water) National Park is made up of a series of steep forested hills with streams running through which is why the only way to explore is on foot.

Hiking Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar

There are plenty of different guided wildlife hikes available from just a couple of hours to full-day outings. The park also offers excellent birding opportunities.

Ranomafana birdlife Madagascar

Top Tip: Pretty much everywhere you eat in Madagascar there will be a dish of chilli paste on the table. Approach with caution! The heat factor varies from hot to volcanic.

Description

Make the most of your time in Africa with this Wildlife Safari and Cultural Tour! 6 days in length and all-inclusive, our Wild Africa Safari tour is an opportunity to experience Africa’s amazing wildlife and unique, colorful cultures. We immerse ourselves in the African tribal cultures of the inhabitants of the Maasai Steppe and learn of their traditional and current ways of life. The days are filled with exploration and a healthy mixture of safaris in three of Tanzania’s best national parks, cultural activities and relaxation in luxurious accommodations with top notch cuisine. All of this is done in comfort with safari Land Cruisers being used for all our travels.

We’ll have the possibility to observe and photograph lions, leopards, African buffalo, elephants, rhinos, cheetahs, wildebeests, hippos and much more of Africa’s most classic wildlife. We will visit with three different tribal communities; the Hazabe, Datoga and Maasai. The natural beauty of the areas we visit is impossible to describe, but we will just leave it at “breathtaking!”

Special Note: This Safari tour is a perfect way to make the most of your trip to Africa by adding it onto the end your Kilimanjaro Trek.  If you’re not joining us on a Kilimanjaro Trek, you will need to arrive to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) the day before the tour begins by 3pm. Our team will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. Dinner and lodging for this night are included in the stand-alone trip rate.

Learn About Our Private Trips

Pre-trip arrival and accommodations.

If you are not joining us for the trek on Kilimanjaro prior to the Safari, you will need to arrive the day prior to Day 1 by 4 P.M. at the JRO International Airport, where we will pick you up and transfer you to our hotel. There will only be one airport shuttle departure for the group. Hotel and dinner are included the pre-trip night.

This morning we’ll awake to an appetizing breakfast at the hotel, and prepare for our adventure in the Tanzanian wild.  Your guide and driver will deliver a short orientation meeting and safari briefing. We will then hit the road for Tarangire National Park, dotted with soaring baobab trees. This area experiences its own small-scale migration as animals move between Tarangire and Lake Manyara in search of food and water.

We’ll enjoy our first game drive and be on the lookout for elephants, cape buffalo, herds of gazelle, zebra, giraffe, and warthogs. Predators such as lions, cheetahs, jackals, hyenas, and leopards roam this incredible park.

After we enjoy our packed lunch, we will continue our journey to Ngorongoro Highlands. Breathe in the beautiful landscape en route to our lodge for the evening. Along the way we get to enjoy the beautiful landscape as we climb the escarpment. Arrive at your lodge, located in the town of Karatu. Time to relax, enjoy dinner, and recall the beauty of what we’ve experienced today.

hiking africa tours

Today, after a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, we’ll drive on to Serengeti National Park. In order to reach the Serengeti we travel through the Ngoro Ngoro Conservation Area, skirting the massive Ngoro Ngoro Crater. We’ll experience a game drive on our way to our evenings accommodation where we’ll have the option to visit the Olduvai Gorge. This gorge holds human remains that provide us with the most continuous known record of human evolution during the last 2 million years! We’ll arrive in time for lunch and check-in at camp Serengeti. The afternoon finds us on another game drive, have those binoculars handy!

hiking africa tours

Today we have a full day game drive, where we’ll get to experience the sprawling plains first-hand. The plains of the Serengeti are home to thousands of hoofed animals and ferocious predators. You’ll see flat and rolling terrain with long grasses, dotted with acacia trees. These plains get their name from the Maasai word Siringitu- “the place where the land moves on forever.”

hiking africa tours

Today we wake up early and depart for a sunrise game drive. Morning is the best time to view wildlife in the Serengeti. After a couple hours on the game drive we will head back to our tented camp for breakfast. Then we’re off for one last drive through the Serengeti to the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater. Descending into the crater we’ll enjoy our picnic lunch on the Ngorongoro Crater floor. We will spend all afternoon enjoying a game drive through the crater, which creates a surreal home for both year round and migrating species of animals and birds. After our full day of game drives, we will go to our accommodation for dinner and relaxation.

  • Drive Time: 1.5 hours

This morning we will enjoy a leisurely start. You can sleep in and have a later breakfast before we depart the lodge. Today we will travel through the agricultural market town of Mto Wa Mbu near the Lake Manyara National Park. We will stop for souvenirs at the city center, which also has a large, outdoor market with fresh produce. This is a souvenir hunter’s paradise, with locally owned shops and an abundance of small treasures to purchase and bring home. The market is a wonderful cultural experience, whether or not you choose to purchase anything. We will then drive out of town for a visit to a traditional Maasai Boma. Here we will meet the inhabitants of a small Maasai home, who dance and sing for us, and where we enjoy a lunch of traditional African style BBQ (Western cuisine options will be available as well). After experiencing the Maasai way of life, we will drive to our final lodging in the city of Arusha for our last night and a final celebratory dinner.

After breakfast, you will have time to relax until your international flight today. You will be transferred from the hotel to the airport at a convenient time for check-in. Flights should be booked for departure after 9 A.M.

Safety Precautions

Your safety is our top priority. Our hiking tours are led by professional hiking guides, all of whom are wilderness-certified first responders or EMT’s, each with years of guiding and wilderness experience. Guides adhere to standardized risk management protocols in case of any potential or actual incident, and all tours carry an emergency communication device and comprehensive first-aid kit. Additionally we have a “24/7” system through which guides or guests can reach Wildland support personnel at any time.

In the interest of your safety, it’s important to refer to the  Center for Disease Control website  for up-to-date recommendations on immunizations before your trip.

Our approach to international travel is to combine the best of two worlds: the dialed-in details, professionalism and consistency Wildland trips are known for; and the cultural immersion and intimate regional knowledge that only locals can provide. To excel with this approach, we vet and hire the best local guides, welcome them into the Wildland family and train them to meet our standard of excellence with every aspect of a trip. But along with managing logistics and safety, your guides will teach you about the area’s history and culture, and provide a level of familiarity and intimate detail only locals can.

Check out our  Meet Our Team  page for staff bios.

Guide Working Parameters

Guides are required to take 8 hours off each 24-hour period to sleep, recuperate, take personal/down time…etc. In addition, as part of the 8 hours off they must sleep/rest or be in their tents/rooms  uninterrupted  for a minimum of 5 hours each night. We ask guests to respect these requirements and to not interrupt guides’ off time and sleep time unless there is a true emergency.

Age Restrictions

Age restrictions on this trip are as follows:

  • 12 and older to join scheduled tours (mixed groups)
  • 5 and older to join private tours, with final approval and specific logistical requirements (such as porter or stock assist) determined on a case by case basis

Trip Insurance

For your protection, we strongly recommend the purchase of field evacuation, repatriation, and medical trip insurance. International travel is expensive, and the modest cost of trip insurance is a sound investment in an uncertain world.

If you wish to purchase trip insurance, we recommend IMG/iTravelinsured. They are one of the world’s leading providers of travel insurance.

For information on recommended IMG/iTravelinsured policies please  click here .

For even greater information, or if you simply prefer communicating with a real, live person, feel free to contact our exclusive agent Michael Bennett. Michael will help you identify the best product for your needs, and there is no cost associated with his assistance. You may contact him at:

Email: [email protected] US by Phone: 877-305-9083 Direct/International by Phone: 702-448-3664

If you already have insurance or wish to purchase from anyone other than IMG/iTravelinsured, we recommend careful consultation with the provider to ensure appropriate coverage. This is because many providers have a number of policy exclusions.

The temperatures on Safari are usually warm and dry with temperatures varying between 60° – 80° F., however due to the vast area of land we travel during our itinerary weather can vary greatly. The short rainy season is between November to January and the long rainy season is between March to May.

Hiking In Africa: 6 Recommended Destinations & Tour Packages

Hiking | walking | mountain climbing in africa.

Hiking is basic to many sporting activities and is also a widely recommended and practiced form of physical training. For example, hiking constitutes a large part of mountain climbing; experienced mountaineers know that they must train themselves for long, arduous hikes over the lower trails and across glaciers and snowfields.

Hiking Safaris in Africa, and walking in nature as a recreational activity. Especially among those with sedentary occupations, hiking is a natural exercise that promotes physical fitness, is economical and convenient, and requires no special equipment. Because hikers can walk as far as they want, there is no physical strain unless they walk among hills or mountains.

If there’s one African hike to rule them all, it’s Africa’s highest peak, the mighty Kilimanjaro , standing at an impressive 5,895m tall. This trek is one of your greatest achievements and still one of the favorite travel memories you will ever experience with JimJam Safaris during your hiking experience in Africa.

hiking africa tours

The topographic range and variety of wildlife provide unmatched hiking conditions. From the Great Escarpment in South Africa, the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, Namibia’s Fish River Canyon, and Tanzania’s famed Mount Kilimanjaro, below you will find a variety of amazing adventures that will beckon you to set out exploring. In no particular order, we have compiled a list of the 10 greatest treks on the continent in the hopes that one of these routes will inspire you to book your next holiday!

Best treks in Africa map

1. Mount Kilimanjaro

This famed mountain trek is at the top of many bucket lists. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak on the continent, and the climb up into the clouds is not without its challenges. This incredible hike passes through 5 climate zones to the snow-capped volcanic summit, including forests, moorlands, and alpine deserts. Ironically, half the hassle of Mount Kilimanjaro is deciding which of the 7 routes to take up to the summit.

While the terrain is not especially technical, the consistent climb and elevation gain is laborious. That being said, considerable planning is required, including conditioning and altitude training. Check out our preparation guide for trekking Mount Kilimanjaro for an exhaustive training and planning checklist. Note that it is not possible to hike without a guide, so it is recommended to book a Kilimanjaro tour , which includes knowledgeable local guides, camping equipment, and more.

Location: Tanzania Distance: Distances vary depending on the route you chose, check out our guide to trekking Mount Kilimanjaro for detailed trail info. Days Recommended: 5-10 days When to do: January-March

Mount Kilimanjaro

2. Mount Mulanje

Mulanje’s peak is the highest in Malawi, beckoning trekkers and intrepid rock climbers to explore its slopes. Frequently shrouded in fog, the isolated massif has 20 peaks, the highest of which being Sapitwa, which has earned the title as the “island in the sky”. While the mountain looks rocky and rugged from a distance, your trek up to the summit travels past tumbling waterfalls, through lush grasslands, green plateaus, wooded ravines, and boulder fields.

Although there are several day-hikes around the base of the mountain, the most immersive and life-changing experience is a multi-day hike into the clouds. The mist-cloaked mountain has 10 mountain huts and over 18 route options to choose from that are managed by the Mountain Club of Malawi. Though guides are not required, it is wise to book a tour as the vast network of trails can easily make you disoriented. Tour guides and accommodations, maps, and more can be booked on-site at a trailhead or reserved through the Mountain Club of Malawi website .

Location: Malawi Distance: Distance vary depending on the chosen route Days Recommended: 1-4 days When to do: April-November

Mount Mulanje

3. Mount Toubkal

Located in the heart of Morocco’s Atlas Mountain Range, Mount Toubkal stands tall at 4,167 m above sea level. A magnet for adventure enthusiasts, the Toubkal Trek is quite esteemed and requires only a 2–3-day commitment, making it great for adventurers on a tight schedule. While not overly technical, the climb demands some stamina and significant elevation gain (including sleeping at high elevations), so conditioning and altitude training are recommended.

Explore rocky valleys and mountain pastures, interact with Berbers in remote villages, and indulge in a traditional cup of mint tea as you climb into the Atlas Mountains. While this is a hot trekking destination, the hospitality and rugged wilderness remains unspoiled. Although this climb can be completed without a guide, booking a tour is wise to avoid getting lost and to ensure a bed in the mountain refuges. Over on the 10Adventures website, you will find an array of Atlas Mountains Tours that will surely quench your thirst for adventure, including the Mount Toubkal Trek .

Location: Morocco Distance: Approx. 37.0 km Days Recommended: 1-3 days When to do: May-October

Mount Toubkal

4. Fish River Canyon

Explore the second largest canyon in the world along the Fish River Canyon Hike. This 85km trek explores the rugged river canyon in Namibia, progressing through billions of years of geological history. Wander along the meandering river past pinnacles and sculptures, sulfur hot springs, and through rock fields. Surprisingly, the Fish River Canyon is abundant with wildlife, including antelope, snakes, scorpions, hyrax, mountain zebras, and more!

This arduous trek requires some athleticism and significant preparation. Hikers will have to carry all their equipment and food as there are no en-route facilities. Additionally, while water is plentiful along the trail, hikers require water tablets or a purifier. Although the trek itself is demanding, it is perhaps more of a challenge to secure a hiking permit and campsite reservations through the Namibia Wildlife Resorts . As there is no shade, this trek is only accessible from May-September due to extreme heat.

Location: Namibia Distance: 85.0 km Days Recommended: 4-6 days When to do: May-September

Fish River Canyon

5. Otter Trail

The Otter Trail is the most popular trekking route in South Africa. Located on the Garden Route, this one-way trail stretches 42.0 km from Tsitsikamma to Nature’s Valley over the rugged coastal headlands, through lush forests, along pristine beaches, and past tumbling waterfalls. Showcasing the natural beauty of the coastal region, hikers will also enjoy the opportunity to navigate tidal river crossings, which can only be attempted during low tide.

This spectacular route is well-loved; thus, the Garden Route National Park has implemented a reservation system to safeguard the environment from overuse. Because of this, hikers must obtain an Otter Trail reservation at least a year in advance. Accommodations along this amazing trail include comfortable huts at each overnight stop along the route. This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful hikes on the continent, so add it to the bucket list!

Find wonderful trekking tours in South Africa on 10Adventures.

Location: South Africa Distance: 42.0 km Days Recommended: 3-5days When to do: Year-round

6. Amatola Trail

The Amatola Trail is another glorious trekking route in South Africa, though this hike is remarkably more challenging than the above-mentioned Otter Trail. Exhibiting the other-worldly beauty of the continent’s southern region, this trek travels 100.0 km from Maden Dam near King Williams Town to the village of Hogsback. Explore the fantastic Amatola Mountains, indigenous forests such as the Malan Forest, grassy plateaus, deep gorges, cascading falls and so much more.

Earning the title of one of the toughest hikes in South Africa, those hoping to explore the Amatola Trail are required to do some conditioning and training before heading out. This undulating trail will test you both physically and mentally, but the exceptional scenery and feeling of accomplishment at the trail’s end are unrivaled! While the terrain is primitive and technical, hikers will indulge in the luxury of sleeping in shelters along this hut-to-hut trek. Note: a hiking permit is required and can be secured online through the Amatola Trails website .

7. Outeniqua Trail

The Outeniqua Trail is another amazing hut-to-hut thru-hike in South Africa. This hidden gem on the Garden Route stretches over 100.0 km through the National Park’s Knysna section from Beervlei to Harkerville. This diverse adventure traverses a swathe of wilderness that is occupied by wild waterways, the Outeniqua Mountain foothills, indigenous forests, shrublands, and eucalyptus plantations.

Compared to other routes in South Africa, such as the Amatola Trail, this adventure is more accessible and even novice trekkers with a decent fitness level should be able to manage the route. Along the way, hikers lay their heads to rest in backcountry huts that line the trail. Accommodations are reserved via email at [email protected] and the additional conservation fee required to hike can be paid in advance or upon arrival. No matter the season, you should come prepared to brave rainy conditions, the Outeniqua Mountains enjoy the maritime weather conditions.

Location: South Africa Distance: 110.0 km Days Recommended: 5-6 days When to do: Year-round

8. Mount Meru Trek

Hike up to the summit of Tanzania’s second-highest peak and the fifth-highest mountain in Africa on the Mount Meru Trek. The Momella Route is the only official trail up to the peak, traveling 45.0 km through the Arusha National Park’s rugged and wild wilderness. This arduous ascent explores the lush montane forests, volcanic craters, and alpine deserts abundant with an array of wildlife that includes warthogs, giraffes, monkeys, buffaloes, leopards, elephants, and a diversity of bird species!

Due to the area’s surplus of fauna, a game ranger must accompany trekkers and their guides. Note: this route is a popular warmup for the famed Mount Kilimanjaro Trek, which sits 70.0 km east of Mount Meru, so expect some company. Additionally, the mountain huts that line this route book fast, so reserve your accommodations ASAP or book through a tour company. We here at 10Adventures have an epic Mount Meru trek that includes accommodations, a professional guide, park fees, food, and more—check it out.

Check out all the trekking tours in Tanzania and book a vacation that will create memories that will last a lifetime.

Location: Tanzania Distance: 45.0 km Days Recommended: 3-4 days When to do: January-March

9. Naukluft Hiking Trail

The Naukluft Hiking Trail is a dynamic and demanding trek that circles the perimeter of the Naukluft Nature reserve. Considered to be one of the toughest trails on the continent, this route undulates through the Naukluft Mountains, descends into steep gorges via chains anchored into the rock faces, and visits the occasional waterfall or swimming hole. Immerse yourself in an arid ecosystem abundant with zebras, klipspringers, leopards, gemsbok, baboons, snakes, and more.

Hikers will also have to be self-sufficient and will need to arrange for a resupply box to be delivered on day 4 of the trek. Considerable preparation and proper gear are required when attempting this feat, including a sturdy pair of footwear—refer to our guide to picking out the best hiking boots for some helpful tips and tricks. Those who wish to tackle this taxing trek must present a medical record attesting to their fitness competencies. While this journey is incredibly challenging, it is highly rewarding.

Location: Namibia Distance: 120.0 km Days Recommended: 6-8 days When to do: March-October

Naukluft Hiking Trail

10. The Drakensberg Grand Traverse

The Drakensberg Grand Traverse is the quintessential South African hiking experience. From the Sentinel Car Park to Bushmans Nek Border Post, this trek travels roughly 220.0 km from South Africa, into Lesotho, and back into South Africa. Showcasing the majesty of the landscape, this long-distance trail summits several peaks in the eastern portion of the Great Escarpment, including Mont Aux Sources, Cleft Peak, Champagne Castle, Giant’s Castle, and the Thabana Ntlenyana.

This scenic route climbs above the clouds and travels along the crests of the mist-shrouded Drakensberg Mountains, passing through the shrubbery, rock fields, river crossings, and past magical waterfalls. While the terrain is not overly technical, the significant elevation gain is burdensome. Don’t forget your camping gear, the huts along this route are limited and camping is the most popular accommodation option. Note: the necessary permit for this trek can be purchased at the Sentinel Car Park.

Cape Town to Victoria Falls Adventure Tour

Cape Town to Victoria Falls Adventure

In February of this year I took a overland trip from Cape Town to Zambia. We had a fairly large group and in that group there were definitely some difficult people. We saw the most amazing things and loved some of the places that we stayed. It will be a trip that will give me memories that will last a life time!

Southern Africa Encompassed: Bush Camps & Wildlife Spotting

Mixed feelings on this - our guide was awesome, and we saw and did many wonderful things. Okavango delta was wonderful, as was Chobe, Matoba, Kruger. So many highlights in terms of itinerary. But there were a lot of travel heavy days on an uncomfortable bus. Band we had two different buses and neither had proper maintenance. We were lucky enough that they didn’t break down, but all of the comfort factors were missing. No air con (and it was HOT), no rear power plugs, no reading lights, no water tank, no wifi, there were USB plugs but a number didn’t work so if that was at your seat for the day, bad luck, no power unless you can convince someone to give theirs up. Not as advertised, and I would take that into consideration before paying their advertised price.

Essential Morocco

This was the best trip I have ever been on. Allal the guide was amazing and very nice. He really made sure we get the best out of our trip. At the end, I felt as if he was family. I like how I truly got the African experience. No, every hotel may not be American standards, but they were fine to me. Everything was just beautiful. The itinerary was perfect. We got to visit so many cities in Morocco. I would definitely do this trip again.

Queen Cleopatra - 7 days Tour

Queen Cleopatra - 7 days

In general, we can say that it was an amazing adventure, which included not only hiking to the points with the main attractions, but also acquaintance with the historical culture of Egypt. You can see not only the pyramids, but also take a walk through the amazing and very peculiar markets. The tour itself seemed a little unbalanced due to the large amount of information and attractions that you will visit in the short period of time that you have. Be prepared that if you want to get as much information as possible, visit as many attractions as possible, you will need to pay extra for this. In terms of food, in general, the food in hotels and cruises is not bad, but the food is more in European and American styles, which was very boring. We had our tour at period of Ramadan and some of the restaurants were closed, so before visiting the pyramids, we had to grab our lunch at a local diner and eat it on the way. And that was really good and what was missed along the next tour days. And indeed, throughout the tour, you can only eat local food a couple of times - this lunch in Cairo in front of the pyramids and in the Nubian village. It is worth noting, that our tour guide Eman was very good. She told us very interesting stories starting from the pyramids and ending by the history how the tombs were discovered. She tried to make us see as much as possible and it is clear that she likes her job and gets a lot of pleasure from it. This greatly affected the quality of the tour. However, not everything was smooth. Not only amazing discoveries are waiting for you, but also a huge number of people who are trying to deceive you in every possible way. There was a moment when a girl from our group was surrounded by children who tried to extort money from her for their goods, which she did not need. It was very difficult to discourage them, but the locals quickly coped with it. There was a moment when people in the market literally fought for our attention, which was also a little unpleasant. Be sure to include the pen in your checklist, because it will be useful to you at the airport several times, and they won't give it to you there. It is recommended arriving at Cairo/Luxor Airport at least 2 hours before your departure, because there is complete chaos and you may just miss your flight.

Magic of Egypt (with free All inclusive upgrade hurghada hotel) 12 Days

This tour exceeded our expectations. We were met and greeted at every point of the journey, everything run to clock work and there was no delays in pick ups. We covered an amazing amount of ground and the tour guides were extremely knowledgeable. Nothing was impossible, all requests were met and in fact on many occasions the tour guides / operations people on the ground went the extra mile without being asked. In regard to safety there was never an occasion we were in doubt, and in fact went out shopping on our own. We found the local people in hotels and in the public extremely friendly and respectful. Local vendors when told "No Thank you" they left you alone. the tour guides were a lot of fun and explained subject matter, culture and history brilliantly. They all are considered personal friends and would be all welcome in our home back in Melbourne Australia. We developed a wonderful relationship with truly caring and kind people.

14-day Kruger to the Delta, Chobe & Victoria Falls (Accommodated) Tour

14-day Kruger to the Delta, Chobe & Victoria Falls (Accommodated)

Southern African Magic Accommodated exceeded my expectations. Not only did I experience what I called "National Geographic Live" and managed to see ALL the animals on my bucket list but one, but the tour was also excellently organized. We had a great guide, Simon, who took care of us all. I have to specifically thank him for looking after my mom at times when she did not participate in scheduled activities. The accommodation were impressive considering that we sometimes were in the middle of nowhere. We always had a pool, great lounge areas and it was very atmospheric - really at times felt like one is on a luxury safari tour. The bungalows sometimes were in private game reserves (therefore increasing animal encounter possibilities) which I loved. I have to admit that I was nervous about the long drives, but the bus was spacious and comfortable and Simon was a very safe driver. The time went by painlessly looking out of panoramic 360 windows (yes, without curtains, but that meant unobstructed view) and listening to Simon on various subjects ( that we quizzed him on) including local life, history, food, etc. Also playing UNO with the rest of the gang. :) I work in the travel industry and I have to say I could not have picked a better tour for the quality and the price point. This was really a once in a lifetime experience, during which, my mother actually had to say: "Please, not another elephant." :D

What people love about Africa Tours

This is an excellent tour but it's certainly not relaxing! We had 2 brilliant leaders who were very knowledgable and looked after us very, very well. Very long days, only occasionally did we reach our overnight accommodation with time spare to relax/swim. Lots of like-minded travelling companions, many of whom had done several GAdventure tours in the past and all of them were very good company.
Mina was an absolutely amazing guide! Would definitely recommend!! :)

BEST FOR: POINT-TO-POINT TREKKING

hiking africa tours

Mountains, monoliths and miles of myriad trails: welcome to the Simien Mountains. In a land full of surprises, this range is undoubtedly one of Ethiopia’s highlights, with many summits over 4000m and Ras Dashen, one of the 10 highest mountains in Africa at 4620m. Comprised of several major plateaux, erosion of ancient layers of basalt has created the dramatic escarpments and pinnacles which make this region so stunning to walk in and even comparable in sheer spectacle to the Grand Canyon. The people and culture also make this adventure, and no visit is complete without seeing the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela too.  More about this adventure

BEST FOR: WALKING WITH LOCAL GUIDES

hiking africa tours

On all of our adventures, you’ll be walking with a local guide. But in Kenya, it’s a bit different, where you walk with the Maasai on a three day trek across the rolling foothills of mighty Kilimanjaro – a truly unique experience. Walking on paths normally only used by wildlife, nights will be spent wild camping and by day you’ll spend time with the Maasai warriors of the Loita tribe, learning about their culture and livelihoods. Expect iconic views on this adventure; sweeping plains and flat-topped trees silhouetted against the backdrop of snow-capped Kilimanjaro.  More about this adventure

Okay, so Reunion is technically part of France – but we’ve included it here as your adventure will feel far more African than French, and it’s situated just east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Our travellers are generally in awe of the incredible scenery found on Reunion – it truly is beyond words, although one of our travellers nicely summarised it with “...and now for something completely different!” On this one island you’ll encounter mountains, volcanoes, rainforests, waterfalls, rivers, coral reefs, tropical beaches and more – plus there’s the trekking highlight of seeing the sunrise from the highest point in the Indian Ocean, the volcanic Piton des Neiges.  More about this adventure

Morocco is also home to a portion of the Sahara, and it’s one of the best places to experience desert trekking. Home to snaking wadis, dramatic plateaus, tamarisk bushes, acacia trees, hidden villages and beautiful sweeping dunes, this part of the Sahara offers that rare off-the-beaten¬-track-adventure. At night you’ll sleep under star-filled Saharan skies, whilst each morning you’ll wake to a rich red Saharan sunrise, plus there’ll be the chance to experience the local culture in traditional Bedouin camps.  More about this adventure

10 Best Mountain Treks in Africa

hiking africa tours

Challenging peaks can be found from Morocco's Atlas Mountains all the way down to South Africa's Drakensberg. Africa's most popular trekking destination is Mount Kilimanjaro , the highest mountain on the continent. Lesser known ranges like Uganda's Rwenzori Mountains offer an incredible array of snow-capped peaks right next to the equator.

Other fantastic hikes in Africa that don't necessarily involve great heights include the Wild Coast (South Africa) and the Fish River Canyon (Namibia).

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

TripSavvy / Ivey Redding

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's most popular trekking destination, and at 19,336 feet it's Africa's highest peak. The trek to the summit takes you through 5 different climatic zones. More than 20,000 people attempt the climb every year.

Routes vary in degree of difficulty, traffic, and scenic beauty. The least difficult routes are Marangu and Rongai; the more difficult routes are Machame, Shira, and Lemosho. The longer routes have more difficult hiking but you'll be more acclimatized and your chances of reaching the summit are therefore higher.

Mount Kenya, Kenya

Mount Kenya is Africa's second highest peak. While the highest peaks Batian (5200m) and Nelion (5188m) require some technical climbing, Lenana (4985m) is the peak trekkers head to. Mount Kenya's slopes are cloaked in forest and moorland which gives way to rock, ice and snow. The mountain is part of a larger reserve .

The best time to climb Mount Kenya is between January - February, and July - October. There are huts on the mountain, or you can camp.

Atlas Mountains, Morocco

TripSavvy / Chris VR

Jebel Toubkal, situated in the High Atlas Mountains is North Africa's highest peak at 4,167m (13,667 ft). It's a challenging trek to the summit, but worth it for the spectacular views.
