The Best Hikes in Sedona, Arizona

By Melissa Kravitz Hoeffner

the moon rising over scenic cathedral rocks Sedona Arizona at sunset

A outdoor lover's paradise in Northern Arizona , Sedona is defined by its impressive red rocks—and the fantastic trails that traverse them.

Sedona hikes offer a variety of challenges, including the option to trot through the scenery with ease. First time hikers will feel comfortable on flat footpaths around famed rocks, while avid adventurists can build their own adventures with steep scrambles and long distance trails. But the allure of Sedona is not limited to its otherworldly terrain—this desert destination also offers great ways to unwind after you unlace your hiking boots, with top notch hotels , restaurants, and wellness spas close at hand.

A few words to the wise: Sedona’s immense popularity in recent years (thanks in large part to the surge in domestic tourism), means trailhead parking lots fill up notoriously early. Consider carpooling, taking a ride share, or walking to your hike to save yourself some time.

Note that the hike lengths listed below can vary based on where you officially pick up a trail; many merge and intersect across Red Rock Country. Wherever you go, pack plenty of water, and as in most rustic areas, don’t expect great cell service once you're out hiking—always remember to take a picture of the trail map at the start of a hike to help navigate your return. Below are our favorite Sedona hikes.

Man hiking through Oak Creek Canyon on the West Fork trail in SedonaFlagstaff Arizona state USA surrounded by red rock...

West Fork, Oak Creek Canyon

Distance: 6.5 miles, out and back

Best for: An immersive scenic hike

Step into the Cocino National Forest for this day trip–worthy hike defined by pine trees, wildflowers , red rocks, and flowing water that calls for a quick dip when the weather is hot. Throughout the hike, you’ll find yourself on stone paths, wooded trails, and walking through the ancient curved walls of Oak Creek Canyon. Plenty of space is available to picnic and rest along the way. Families may also want to take a detour (by car) to nearby Slide Rock State Park , a natural water slide and swimming hole popular with kids.

A rock formation known as Snoopy Rock in Sedona Arizona

Snoopy Rock

Distance: 2.3 mile loop

Best for: Beginner hikers

An ideal hike for family travelers, those with limited mobility, or first-time hikers, this trail named for the popular Peanuts dog is relatively flat and easy to traverse. Popular with trail runners as well, the hike is beautiful at all times of day, although limited shade means it can feel spectacularly hot in summer temperatures.

Horizontal view of Cathedral Rock in Sedona Arizona.

Cathedral Rock

Distance: 3.5 miles round trip

Best for: Recreational hikers looking for an iconic experience

Emblazoned on many a souvenir, Cathedral Rock is one of the Sedona hikes loved by daytrippers and locals alike. The intensity is low at the beginning and gets harder as you scale upwards—it’s more of a rock climb in some parts, but those who have never climbed can easily succeed with good hiking boots . If inclines aren’t for you, feel free to turn around when the trail meets rock—plenty of people do. Expect at least 90 minutes to reach the top, where there's enough space to spread out a picnic before exploring the summit and heading back down. Sunrise and just before sunset are the best times for this hike, but it’s popular all day long.

Scenic view of Chuck Wagon Trail with Secret Mountain and various red rock formations in the distance Sedona Arizona

Doe Mountain

Distance: 1.5 miles, out and back

Best for: Experienced hikers short on time

If you’re looking to fit in a quick morning hike with a view, Doe Mountain is your spot. The entire hike, mostly on a steep and rocky incline, takes about a half hour each way. The trail up affords a beautiful view on flat, cactus-spiked rock, and the hike down offers plenty more stops to enjoy the scenery. The lunch break hike is a popular route, so expect to say hi to many more hikers at midday.

Devils Bridge Sedona Arizona United States of America North America

Devil’s Bridge

Distance: Two mile loop, but those without an ATV will also have to hike to the start of the trail from Dry Creek Vista Trailhead (a 4.2 mile trip) or Chuckwagon Trail (a 5.8 mile trip)

Best for: Social media-inspired hikers

Perhaps one of the most iconic hikes in Sedona thanks to the photo opp at the end, Devil’s Bridge is a thrilling, yet oft-crowded, four-mile (round-trip) hike. This trail is moderate in intensity, with enough vertical stairs to make bringing a large water bottle worthwhile. To get the iconic photo over the Devil’s Bridge, swap cameras with a fellow hiker or set up your phone on a tripod to film yourself walking across the thin plateau with a frightening drop below. Ask locals when the best time for this hike is when you go, because it changes by season—shadows can obscure the worthwhile views if you go at the wrong time.

Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park

Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park

Distance: 14 acres of trails, can be ADA accessible with prior arrangement

Best for: Meditative walks and silent strolls

This sacred and peaceful Buddhist site is open to all to meditate, hike, and enjoy the fresh air and natural sounds surrounding a 36-foot-tall stupa. Trails are mostly flat with a low incline, making them easy to traverse in athletic sandals or hiking boots. Shade is limited the further you venture from the stupa, so bring a hat or visor .

A pair of tour Jeeps circling a sandstone formation near the edge of a cliff

Chicken Point

Distance: 1.5 miles if you start from Broken Air trailhead

Best For: Daytrippers and solo hikers

A quintessential Sedona hike, this perpetually popular (but not too crowded) hike is great for solo hikers who don’t want to feel isolated. Jeeps tours head right to the top, meaning you’re sure to see other tourists along the way (and have someone at one of the viewing points to snap a photo). This loop is moderately difficult, but can be taken at any pace, and is lush with the red rock trails that make Sedona so special. Like many local hikes, you can also choose your start and end points for a full loop, or just a trek to the highlight of Chicken Point itself.

Views from the desert near Sedona Arizona

Bear Mountain

Distance: 4.9 miles, out and back

Best for: Advanced hikers looking for a challenge

Known as one of Sedona’s most challenging hikes, Bear Mountain is worth climbing for its summit with 360-degrees views of the entire region. Many points on the way up offer pull-offs for enjoying views and allowing your body to rest and recharge as you work your way to the top. The trail is steep with loose rock, and recommended for those familiar with the terrain. Bring layers for breezy spots, especially if you plan to enjoy the summit’s views for a while.

The other advantage of going on a guided hike is that you are free to enjoy the views, get lost in the moment and not on the trail. You'll be able to enjoy less traveled travel trails that only the guides and few locals know of.

If you just want to know what some of the best hikes in Sedona are, here's a pretty good start:

Best with Your Kids: West Fork

This 6-mile hike follows an idyllic stream which you can enjoy March-November. This is a great option for kids because the water is so much fun! It is flat with easy effort, and you can turn around at any time on this shaded out-and-back trail. Get there early to access the parking lot.

West Fork Hike Sedona

Best Photo Opportunity: Devil’s Bridge

An easy two-mile walk to a natural arch and beautiful views. Fairly easy out and back available year-round.

Devil's Bridge Sedona

Best for a Long Run:

  • 12-Mile-Run Park at Midgley Bridge, take Jim Thompson up Brins Mesa, down to Soldiers Pass to Jordan Trail and back on Jim Thompson
  • 10-Mile-Run Start at the TH next to Adobe Village Inn on Bell Rock Blvd. Take Slim Shady 2.6 miles to Templeton Trail 3.4 miles. You will hit water and swimming holes.

Best for an Adventurous Hike: Bear Mountain Trail

A hard, out, and back, 6-mile hike that you should plan to spend 4 to 5 hours on. This is open all year but extremely hot in the summer. There are stunning views all around after summitting four different steps to get to the top of this mountain.

Directions: From the “Y” in Sedona, go west on Hwy 89A 3.1 miles to mile post 371 Dry Creek Road. Turn right toward Boynton Pass Road then take a left onto Boynton Pass and continue another 1.2 miles to the trailhead parking on the left. This parking lot is shared with Doe Mountain Trail.

Best Loop: Airport Loop

This is my favorite loop because the views never stop. A 3.5-mile loop that ends at a vortex. This trail circumnavigates the rim of Airport Mesa. This trail is level compared to other Sedona hikes, but very rocky making it feel extra adventurous.

Directions: Head to Sedona’s airport and turn left on airport road. The vortex parking lot is on the left 0.5 miles up the hill. The hike begins behind the guardrail across the road from the parking lot.

Best Views: Cathedral Rock

Most hikes in Sedona will get you to endless jaw-dropping views, but Cathedral Rock’s view is special because you feel like you are in the middle of the red rock towers. This steep and quick route gets you 600 feet high in 0.7 miles. There is a scrambling section of steep slick rock, but most can make it.

Directions: From the “Y” in Sedona head south on Hwy 179 S to Back O Beyond Rd.

Cathedral Rock Hike Sedona

The Hike that Gets You Up on Top of Something: Doe Mountain

Cosmic Ray’s guidebook describes this as climbing sky island to a vast panorama. A 3.6 mile out and back is available all year and a moderate hiking effort considering the summit you reach. On top of Doe Mountain, you will be 400 feet up on a narrow flat top that is easy to explore and get vast views from every direction.

Directions: From the “Y” in Sedona, go west on Hwy 89A 3.1 miles to milepost 371 Dry Creek Road. Turn right toward Boynton Pass Road then take a left onto Boynton Pass and continue another 1.2 miles to the trailhead parking on the left.

Best Sedona Hikes Overall

West fork trail.

This flat, scenic trail takes you through apple orchards, past historic structures, along blackberry bushes and into Oak Creek amidst the towering walls of Oak Creek Canyon. The most difficult part of this trail is crossing the shallow creek water several times on stones laid across or by getting your feet wet. The water level and temperature change depending on the time of year, but the water is never high enough that you can't cross it. This is one of Sedona's most popular hikes for good reason; it's gorgeous year-round and it puts you right in between canyon walls along a clear water creek. $11 parking/car.

Cathedral Rock

Cathedral Rock in Sedona offers some of the best views and is a short 1.5 mile hike round trip with a. 740+ ft elevation gain. As a bonus, you can scramble up a bit further past the saddle to get a better view with fewer people. The scramble portion is near vertical. so be cautious if you plan to get that stellar sunset view. Dogs are allowed, but it is not advisable for most dogs. Cathedral Rock is also one of the famous vortex points, which makes this a very popular hiking location.

Best Hikes to Catch Sunset

Sedona's western canyons are great for sunsets. Just past Boynton Pass you can park at the Doe Mesa trailhead and have a choice of two hikes: Doe Mesa is a moderate one-hour ascent (3.6 mile round trip) to a plateau with great views everywhere you look; it's across the street from Bear Mountain . This is not an easy hike with an elevation gain of 1,800 feet (6 miles return trip), but the locals will tell you it's the best trail around just bring lots of water and sunscreen.

Best Hikes for When It's Hot

When it's hot, most of us head for Oak Creek Canyon. West Fork hike fits in this category, but there are other great hikes that take you to the creek as well. At Midgley Bridge, you have your choice of three hikes. The Huckaby Trail passes under the bridge and descends down to the creek where you can rest with your feet in the chilly water. You can continue on the trail for another five miles to the trailhead on Schnebly Hill road or just go back to Midgley Bridge. The Wilson Canyon trail explores the wash upstream, following in the steps of pioneer Richard Wilson who tracked a wounded Grizzly and was then promptly killed by the bear. And finally, the Wilson Mountain trailhead also begins at the Bridge. Here you can ascend right up to the Ponderosa Pine forest that grows on the Colorado Plateau 1,500 feet above, but be warned this hike is strenuous without much shade once you begin.

Even when you hike by yourself in the canyons of Sedona you won't feel alone. The town sits in the middle of 1.8 million acres of National Forest and has a healthy population of animals, including bobcats, mule deer, javelina, mountain lions and coyotes. For your best chances of an animal encounter, plan to be on the trails either around sunrise or sunset. Many of the trails also pass by ruins or walls covered with rock art and petroglyphs because during the time of the Sinagua, (500 AD and 1425 AD) there were as many as five thousand Indians living in the Verde Valley and the deeper you go into the canyons the stronger their presence becomes. But if you're just a little unsure about venturing out by yourself or would like a back up tool, we suggest downloading the Sedona Hiking App . This app is FANTASTIC for choosing the best hike for you regarding difficulty, time, elevation gain, etc., and it uses your phone's GPS to help you see that you're always on the right path.

Red Rock Treks

Perfect, warm, accomodating, gave perfect direction, I felt safe and was still having fun. I adored Andy and I hope my friend gets him too. I didnt have to think at all, just enjoy. I was so grateful you could take me at the last minute. My 24 year old daughter wanted to go at her own pace, which meant separate hikes.

For me 5 means just right, nothing where I am worried about my safety and magnificent beauty all around me

Awesome hike with very knowledgeable and I interesting guide!

Amazing, knowledgable, curteous and accommodating- recommending him to my friends- booking him for my upcoming Grand Canyon trip next fall.

Great hike that was quiet yet demanding. Our guide picked a less busy trail which led us to the top of the Merry-Go-Round. The views were spectacular!! Red Rock Treks is the only way to go!!

Andy was unbelievable!! He prepared us well for our hike, particularly with safety. He knew the hike well and even brought along his dog. Overall a great experience and we will always use Red Rock Treks!!

Andy took us to Bell Rock to experience the vortex. He was a great guide and the hike was catered to us! Loved it and thank you Beth for loving your customers!

Full day private tour with Tracy to Antelope Canyon and Horse Shoe Bend. also took a second private Vortex Energy tour with Tracy. You cannot ask for a better experience than this . Tracy is extremely knowledgeable and friendly and gave us a fun and fact filled adventure . Tracy provided an absolutely private and memorable experience for us . She made us feel right at home and provided all we needed to have a great day including all snacks ,drinks, and lunch. Her vehicle was extremely comfortable and clean and she gave us a safe driving experience. This was a great tour and spending the day with Tracy was great. We highly recommend Tracy and her touring adventures.

Tracy is so knowledgeable, she makes each event special. My daughter and I have taken the Grand Canyon Stroll, the Vortex tour and a trip to the cliff dwellings, the well and to the ranch. I have taken two other friends to her Grand Canyon Stroll. So worth it! So all in all I have “trekked” with Tracy each of my 3 recent trips to Sedona!

The exercises and reflections that Dr. Harmony introduced on the trek brought out vulnerabilities, strengths, and passions we'd never fully explored together. We returned not just with memories of a beautiful journey, but with a renewed sense of unity and love for each other. Highly recommended for any couple looking to reignite their bond!"

Sedona Vortex Healing on Bell Rock

"Dr. Harmony helped me release inner confusion giving me peace and clarity. I am grateful for this healing experience. I highly recommend a Harmonic Healing session in the energy vortex. I found the exercises and action steps she provided to be perfect for me to make practical changes in my daily habits. The views and energy at Bell Rock are spectacular! It was truly a transformative experience."

MORE ABOUT SEDONA INN-BASED TOURS

Why a sedona inn-based hiking vacation.

Picture yourself hiking deep into the red rock country surrounding Sedona, Arizona, discovering canyons, stunning desert vistas, sandstone towers and learning about the amazing geology and human history of the area. Then, after a day of unforgettable hiking, returning to hand-picked, local lodging and fantastic Sedona eateries. Then maybe a moon-lit walk to a viewpoint in town that is a must-see spot. Now imagine 3 or 4 days of this – soaking up the Arizona sun and the beauty and tranquility of Sedona just long enough it seeps into your soul. And you take some of it home with you. That’s the way to enjoy a Sedona hiking vacation.

IS SEDONA A HIKING DESTINATION LIKE NATIONAL PARKS?

The short answer is ‘absolutely.’ While Sedona is not a national park, it is surrounded by national forest, which is another form of federally protected natural landscapes. The Sedona area is also home to wilderness areas, which are designated roadless to preserve their wildness and pristine nature. Perhaps most importantly, Sedona is as special and beautiful as many of America’s national parks. It is a world-class hiking destination.

DO I NEED A HIKING GUIDE IN SEDONA?

Hiking guides provide tremendous value in Sedona. Because of the sheer number of Sedona hiking trails, a guided tour allows you to maximize your visit by only doing the best ones. Sedona can also get quite crowded, and so knowing how and when to hike to optimize the solitude is a huge added benefit. Sedona is a desert environment without an abundance of water, and every year hundreds of hikers get into trouble in Northern Arizona by not understanding the environment. Guides raise the level of safety so guests can go for it and push their limits. Also, guides can bring an area to life through their personal passion, their knowledge and through enhancing guests’ ‘sense of place’ by conveying natural and cultural history, fascinating local stories, and pointing out important landmarks.

Amazing Tour!! Thank you to Akal for providing me with such an amazing and powerful, life-changing tour. Akal was very knowledgeable, genuine and compassionate. The important piece to know about these tours is that they are not only private, but tailored to the needs that are most pressing in your life at that time. Akal took the time to listen and from there decided which vortexes I would most benefit from. The tour was well-paced and we even had time for an extra stop before completing the tour. Thank you Akal and Sedona Red Rock Tours. –C.A.
Our family did the vortex tour. What a wonderful, life changing experience we had with Patricia. AMAZING time.  Wonderful evening. This was an experience that our family did together and will always keep as one of our very best memories ever. The scenery is unbelievable and the memories we created on Bell Rock is something like nothing we had ever experienced before. We were lucky enough to be there when a thunderstorm was in the distance and the breeze, the sky, the mountains–just breathtaking. Our lives have been changed by this experience. Thank you so much for a great evening. –A Traveling Sloth from Novi, MI
