Queen Cleopatra - 7 days

Absolutely loved this tour! Big shout out to Sohaila & Anas who were both fantastic tour guides. There were a couple of things along the way that could have gone a little better, but they were insignificant in the grand scheme of things. The sites included in the tour are all breath taking and somehow get better and better. I'd highly recommend doing all of the extras, particularly Abu Simbel and the Luxor hot air balloon. Accom was also much better than I had expected and sleeper train wasn't too bad either, surprisingly.

Pharaohs Nile Cruise Adventure - Return Flights Included

It was good. In the beginning, we had some issues with the lack of communication in El Cairo. We chose the sleeping train option from El Cairo to Luxor (included in the tour) but we spent 3-4 hours sitting in the train station when we could have done anything else. Also, we didn't know that the train didn't have showers and we were supposed to start the tour day in Luxor as soon as we arrived.... so if you are choosing the sleeping train option consider this, also that you share the bathroom with the people in the same wagon. Once we arrived on the cruise, everything went smoothly. The tour guide always took care of us, gave us tips, and explained everything well. The cruise was overall good, they gave you what you paid for. I do recommend the tour!

This was my first G Adventures tour (previously having stuck with Contiki and TravelTalk) and I have to say this thoroughly impressed me - the itinerary was well thought out and executed well, all of the inclusions were decent (nothing worse than an included activity being a waste of time) and the options extra's were a 100% worth it. Massive shout out to our CEO for the trip Medo who was one of the best guides I've had across 10+ tours now... he was in great spirits throughout the early mornings and the late evenings, and his knowledge was beyond extensive! He was coming off the back off 2 months continuous trips but you wouldn't know it from his enthusiasm and amazing attitude. The only negative for anyone interested in Egypt... be prepared for the Wifi to not work in any hotel you enter, best tip is to buy a SIM at the airport and use that instead... I think the majority of our had done that by the end as it was so bad in the hotels we were in!

Footsteps Of The Pharaohs - Included Internal Flights

This was our first time in Egypt. Due to the known reasons, many people cancelled their trips to Egypt. But we found Egypt is very safe (much safer than New York City). Police and armed guards are everywhere to ensure the safety of the tourists. There was not a single encounter with risk during the entire trip from Alexandria all the way to Abu Simbel. We truly enjoyed the civilization of ancient Egypt, thanks to the tour guides Abdu (Cairo), Saladino (river cruise), and Ahmed (Alexandria). They are well-educated experts involved in archeological discoveries in the country. We were treated so well by everyone during the entire tour. The river cruise allowed us to see how people live along the river. The highlight of the cruise was the Captains Party in the bar. Food was good, especially the Egyptian dinner. There was a large fleet of cruise ships (more than 20) moving together. My only problem was the diesel gas smell on board of the ship (M.S. La Sarah). We were a small group with 6 tourists and one guide so we could discuss the history with the guide anytime we wanted to. The tourist sites were not crowded in this peak season, which gave us plenty of opportunities to take photos and observe the beauty of Egypt. Saladino is a great person, who led us to ride on local minibus to a local seafood restaurant deep in the neighborhood. We enjoyed the fish from Lake Nasir and big shrimps from the Red Sea with the locals. We knew we have to face the venders who were aggressive, but it didn't bother us because all they want was to make some money. They are harmless. Tolip Golden Plaza Hotel in Cairo has big rooms with adequate facility. There are some restaurants nearby with descent food, except Katalia, which needs to be avoided. Overall, I rated the tour with 5-stars. One note: if you see school children approaching you for photos, go ahead let them take photos with you. These lovely kids just want to have photos with foreigners.

Mr Ahmed is 1 man contact, he is available through out the booking and during the tour constantly taking care of how it has been going. Egypt pyramids, the treasures in museums and the temples in Luxor Abu simbel is worth going there.

What people love about Egypt Tours

Really enjoyed being in a small group instead of a traditional large group and our guide was great. This was a fast, hit-the-high points type of tour which is what we wanted; but, didn't really get to spend too much time at any one place. Didn't care for the hotel we were based out of - the rooms didn't have opaque walls between the bedroom and bathroom, just glass that was partly translucent; and, the hotel was a long ways away from everything.

Queen Cleopatras is a great tour, highly recommended, Anas is a great guide, he explained everything about Egyptian culture and toke care about our group! I will recommend to head office to deliver schedules with the tours to be able to plan our days. Cruse was amazing, service is great and everyone is very friendly! Also there is laundry available at your room! Ruby II is a great option, the room is very nice! I won’t recommend to take the train from Cairo to Aswan, service is great but services are not good (very old and dirty), washrooms very dirty!

Mina was an incredible tour guide - so friendly and knowledgeable. He is such a kind hearted man who made our trip so special.

Egypt is blessed with lots of sunshine and very little rain. Generally, the hottest months are June to August, and the coolest month is January. Rainfall is negligible, except on the coast, with rain usually occurring during the winter months (December to March).

During the summer months (from June to August), daily temperatures can reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) - perfect for snorkeling and soaking up the sun on the beaches of Sinai, but can prove challenging for some in the crowded streets and souqs of Cairo.

Choose to escape the crowds by traveling from March to May or September to November when the weather is milder, and there's the opportunity to experience Egypt during Ramadan and the celebrations of Eid (which marks the breaking of the fast). If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it's important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours.

Culture and customs

Life in Egypt has been in a state of flux since the 2011 revolution. Many of the issues that motivated so many to take to the streets in protest continue to be points of contention, but Egyptians remain hopeful, relying on religion, family and humor to get them through, like they have for thousands of years. A strong sense of community binds people across the country. Families and communities support each other and there is a prevailing sense that everyone is in it together. For all these reasons, most express great pride in being Egyptian, despite their nation’s recent turmoil.

As a largely Muslim country (about 90% of the population is Muslim while most of the remaining 10% identify as Coptic Christian), Islam permeates daily activities. Life revolves around the five daily prayers and everything is closed on Friday, the Muslim holy day. A wide array of cultural norms, including how people dress and interact with the opposite sex, are influenced by religion. Women are largely defined by their role as a mother and matron of the house, whereas men are expected to be the provider.

Many Egyptians consider their country the gateway between the West and the rest of the Arab world, and take pride in their ability to mix tradition with modern influences. This mixing is most apparent in major cities, such as Cairo and Alexandria, where American fast-food chains can be found next to traditional cafes, secular attitudes are more common, and pop music rings through city streets.

Food and drink

With fragrant spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, and delicious sweets on offer, culinary adventures in Egypt are guaranteed. On many Intrepid trips you'll be given the opportunity to dine with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the ingredients.

Things to try in Egypt

1. Hamam mahshi

A north African delicacy, hamam – roasted pigeon stuffed with cracked wheat and rice – can be found on the menu of most traditional Egyptian restaurants. You may need a few to fill up though, as they don’t contain a lot of meat. And be careful of all the tiny bones.

2. Ta'ameya (falafel)

Crunchy on the outside, and moist on the inside, these deep-fried balls of spiced fava beans are a Middle Eastern vegetarian staple. Usually served in a pita with salad, pickles, and sesame-based tahina - buy it at a street stall for a quick, cheap meal.

Shops specializing in this popular ‘poor man’s dish’ can be found throughout Cairo. A hearty mix of rice, macaroni and lentils, chickpeas, and fried onions, koshary is topped with a tomato-vinegar sauce.

4. Ful medames

Don't leave Egypt without trying the classic dish of ful medames, which can be traced back to pharaonic times. Consisting of slow-cooked fava beans, served with olive oil, parsley, garlic, and lemon juice - add some spice by seasoning with chili paste and eat with bread.

5. Pastries

Delicious, sweet pastries are found in restaurants, markets, and cafes in Egypt. Never was there a better time to live by the adage ‘Life is short, eat dessert first’.

Egypt is a mostly Muslim country, and any consumption of alcohol here is relatively low-key. There are many fantastic alternatives. Juice stands are common on main streets offering freshly squeezed banana, guava, or mango juice. Karkadai is a chilled, crimson drink brewed from hibiscus leaves (served hot in the winter). And tea (or shai) is the beverage of choice for most Egyptians, which is sipped throughout the day and with meals.

Geography and environment

Located in the northeast corner of Africa, Egypt shares its borders with Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Libya, and Sudan, as well as the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the east. The two seas are connected by the man-made Suez Canal.

The remote triangle-shaped peninsula is largely characterized by limestone and desert, but also has a vibrant coral reef along the Red Sea coastline. Hot, dry desert covers most of the country’s terrain, with the Western Desert occupying much of the west, and the Arabian (or Eastern) Desert stretching the length of the eastern coast. These two regions are dissected by the Nile River, which runs the length of the country, emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile Valley, a narrow fertile band extending from the river, is the country’s only fertile land and where 98% of the population lives.

History and government

Recent history.

Napoleon Bonaparte, the infamous pint-sized French leader, invaded Egypt in 1798, seeking to set up a French colony. However, not long after, the French were repelled, and Egypt became a part of the Ottoman Empire once again.

From 1882, the British Army occupied Egypt to protect the Suez Canal. Muhammad Ali officially ruled from the early 1800s, and his family and successors continued to rule for decades (alongside and during British occupation) until overthrown by a military coup in 1952.

During World War II, Egypt became a crucial element in Britain's defense. The Italian Army tried to advance into Egypt in 1940 but was stopped by the British Army at Mersa Matruh. Egypt continued to serve as a vital base for British troops during World War II and despite the disruption, Egypt's shopkeepers and retail trade benefitted from the thousands of Allied troops staying in Egypt.

In 1953, Egypt was officially declared a republic, and a year later, Colonel Nasser was declared Prime Minister, then President. In 1979, after decades of confrontation with neighboring Israel, the historic Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed. This agreement made Egypt the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel as a country - a significant step in the peace process. More recently, in February 2011, large-scale protests and mass demonstrations resulted in the removal of President Mubarak after decades of autocratic rule.

Early history

Ancient Egypt has been the focus of much fascination, investigation, speculation, and intrigue. It's hard to escape the education system without having studied Ancient Egypt in some way. Drawn in by the mighty pyramids, mysterious hieroglyphics, distinct burial rituals and animal-headed gods - scholars, students, historians, and travelers are all amazed by this civilization which has endured cycles of dynastic rule, invasion, and natural disasters.

Through key archaeological finds, historians have been able to unravel some of the mysteries of this great land. What is known is that the daily life of the average Egyptian usually involved working in agriculture with the waters of the Nile providing fertile ground for planting crops. Egyptians usually lived in modest homes with children and domestic pets. Professions were usually inherited - so if your father was a farmer, then so were you.

While most Egyptians led simple lives, dynasties of Pharaohs led lavish lifestyles, with the most well-known being Ramses II, Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun, and Cleopatra. Within the maze of narrow streets and laneways lie stalls selling jewelry, glass, copper, spices and artisan goods, along with more standard tourist fare. Quality can vary greatly so spend some time shopping around.

Like many markets around the world, bargaining is the norm, but Egyptians take it to another level. Expect to be offered tea (it can take that long) and for elaborate theatrics from the seller. While bazaars in Cairo tend to sell everything, visit Aswan’s bazaar for spices, incense, and basketwork, and Luxor for cheaply priced alabaster figurines and vases. Things to buy in Egypt

You’ll often see spices piled high in bazaars. In addition to making a great photo for Instagram, they’re often a good buy as long as you keep a couple of things in mind. Always buy whole spices rather than ground to ensure freshness and skip the ‘saffron’ – it’s actually safflower and tastes like dust.

2. Glassware

Hand-blown Muski glass, recognizable by its air bubbles, comes in brilliant shades of blue and green and purple and has been made in Egypt since medieval times. Be careful with this purchase though as it’s extremely fragile.

A kind of nameplate written in hieroglyphics. Most gold or silver shops sell these and many can customize them by engraving your name.

Festivals and events

Eid al-fitr.

After fasting for an entire month, Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan with Eid al-Fitr, or ‘Feast of Breaking the Fast’. For three days, starting on the first day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar, people celebrate with feasts, family, and festivals. Look for vendors selling kahk cookies (nut-filled cookies covered in powdered sugar) while taking in the festivities, a tasty treat synonymous with Eid for many locals.

Eid al-Adha

Arguably the most important holiday in Egypt, the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’ is not one for vegetarians and vegans. About 70 days after Eid al-Fitr, sheep, and goats are slaughtered (often in the middle of the street) for a mighty feast.

Sham el-Nessim

Each year on March 21st, Egyptians celebrate the coming of spring by spending the day outdoors. Join the locals for this ancient holiday by packing a picnic and heading to a park or public garden.

Abu Simbel Sun Festival

As if the two temples dedicated to Ramses II and Queen Nefertari weren’t impressive enough, they were constructed in such a way that twice a year, the sun’s rays reach its innermost chambers and illuminate three stone gods that reside within, while leaving Ptah (god of the underworld) in the dark. And those days just happen to be Ramses’s birthday (October 21) and coronation (February 21). Coincidence? We think not.

Credit cards are usually accepted by modern hotels, large retailers, and tourist sites but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors in remote areas. Always carry enough cash for smaller purchases in case credit cards are not an option.

ATMs are commonly found in larger cities, like Cairo and Alexandria, near shopping centers, tourist areas, and 5-star hotels, but are far less common in small towns and rural areas. Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Is Egypt a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Discretion is advised for LGBTQI travelers in Egypt. Though homosexuality is not officially outlawed, gay men have been prosecuted using debauchery and public morals laws and given long prison sentences. Be aware that signals are ambiguous in Egypt as men commonly hold hands, link arms and greet each other with a kiss on the cheek. As long as you use common sense, travel in Egypt should not be a problem.

What to wear in Egypt

Summer temperatures can get very high, so light fabrics like linen, cotton and athletic gear made to take the heat are best. If you’re traveling outside of winter, don’t underestimate the cool change that can come in the evenings, especially if you’re spending the night in the desert or on a Nile cruise. Avoid packing anything in white – desert dust will quickly turn those light-colored clothes a not-so-delightful shade of brown.

The summer months which are from June to August usually mean that the temperatures get very high. This is perfect weather for soaking up the sun’s rays and snorkelling however. From October to February which is Egypt’s winter months, the weather is cooler with the chance of some rain.  In comparison to most European countries, the temperatures are still warm and activities such as diving can be done year round.

It is likely that the Great Pyramids make your travel bucket list, but it really should be all of Egypt, for there’s so much more it offers. In these fast-moving times, travel to a land that symbolises the very meaning of the word ancient. And for the best version of the experience, plan it all based on the best season to go to Egypt.

Naturally, climatic conditions and annual seasons are the most important factors to consider, as venturing outdoors under the sweltering desert heat is not the most comfortable experience. Visitors from the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the EU may purchase their visa stamp upon arrival in Egypt. South Africans need to arrange their Egyptian visa prior to arrival. Please note that single-entry tourist visa fee is USD 25 and it can only be paid in USD, GBP or Euro.

Travellers entering Egypt must have a passport valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. Ramadan: Ramadan is perhaps the most important holiday in Egypt. It occurs on the ninth month of the Muslim lunar year and is a time of blessings and prayers to honour the revelation of the first verses of the Qur'an to the Prophet Muhammad. Spring (March–May) and autumn (Oct & Nov) are the best times to visit Egypt, when it’s hot but not debilitating so. In summer (June–Sept) the south and desert are ferociously hot and the pollution in Cairo is at its worst, with only the coast offering a respite from the heat. During this time, sightseeing is best limited to early morning or afternoon “Historical places are opening almost from 06:00 to 17:00”. In winter (Dec–Feb), most places are reasonably warm during the day, but chilly at night, while the desert can get very cold indeed. The Mediterranean Coast can be windy and wet in winter.

If weather is your primary concern, it is clear now that the best time to visit Egypt is during the northern hemisphere fall, winter or early spring (October to April), when temperatures are cooler but you are still guaranteed sun. To avoid the crowds at ancient sites like the Pyramids of Giza, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel, try to avoid peak season (Christmas and New Year holidays). Tourism in Egypt is booming this time of the year so make sure you plan in advance.

To avoid roaming charges, it's probably best to buy a local SIM card in Egypt. Local SIM cards can be used on most unlocked phones from Europe, Asia and Australia and some unlocked phones from North America, but because Egypt's mobile phones run on a GSM network, a lot of cellphones from the US may not work. You'll still be able to access WI-FI when it's available, but a mobile plan may not be an appropriate way to get connected.

For most other travelers, picking up a local SIM is probably your least expensive course of action. Egypt has four main telecommunications providers – Orange, Vodafone, Etisalat and WE – and you can visit one of their kiosks or stores to get a SIM card. Here, they may ask for a passport and confirmation of address, then you will be able to get your mobile connected.

The currency in Egypt is the Egyptian pound (EGP, E£ or LE). You don't have to change money before arriving in Egypt. Money exchange service is easily available through banks and the Money exchange bureau. You will get a better rate for your USD, Euro or Sterling pounds, etc. in Egypt.

Many travelers like to arrive with some local money to pay for initial expenses. Egypt is a desert country that means the climate will be hot, sunny and dry.

Summer temperatures in southern cities like Luxor and Aswan can reach heights of 50°C (122°F) and don’t always drop at night. So, Light fabrics like linen, cotton and athletic gear made to take the heat are best. Just remember to cover up from your shoulders to below the knee.

Women are expected to dress more conservatively than men, for visits to mosques, female travelers should wear clothing that covers from ankle to elbow as well as decolletage and hair. Aside from mosque visits, you don’t have to cover your head. But being culturally sensitive by covering up is expected and respectful. The people of Egypt are well aware that not all people travelling are Muslim. If you want to swim, you can pack your regular swimsuit. All hotels with pools that cater to foreigners do not have dress codes.

Winters are generally mild, although temperatures can fall below 10°C (50°F) at night. If you’re travelling in winter, don’t underestimate the cool change that can come in the evenings, especially if you’re spending the night in the desert or on a Nile cruise. A light fleece or jacket should be sufficient to keep you warm on Egypt’s chillier nights specially at the end of December and January.

Tipping is customary for pretty much all services in Egypt. If you’re happy with the service provided by waiters, drivers and other workers, leaving a small tip is a good way to show your appreciation. For smaller purchases, rounding up the bill or not asking for any change is an appropriate way of leaving a tip. The amount you tip in Egypt will depend on where you are and what type of services you’re buying. As a general rule, expect to tip around 5-10% of your bill. Tipping encourages excellent service in the future and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry. Carrying small notes in the local currency will make tipping easier in Egypt. Of course, you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length of your trip. The Shisha, the traditional Egyptian waterpipe, a large collection of backgammon boards, decorative boxes, and many other handicrafts made by local artisans are spread all over the touristic markets in Egypt. Some of the fantastic local markets that you can explore on your trip to Egypt are the Khan El Khalili Bazaars in Cairo, the tourists market in Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh.

Cairo’s bazaars offer an infinite choice of jewellery, cotton textiles, leatherwork, glassware, brass and copperware, plus the world’s best selection of bellydancing costumes. The most popular souvenirs are Egyptian Papyrus Paper, the gold or silver cartouches with names in hieroglyphics. Alabaster figurines and vases are cheaper in the alabaster factories on Luxor’s west bank. While Aswan’s market is the best for spices, incense, basketwork, perfumes and natural essences and the elegant handmade perfume bottles are another popular souvenir.

Cotton textiles, the worldwide famous Egyptian cotton made products would be a good choice to buy in Egypt. Many shops, found in touristic and local markets and in large shopping malls sell pure cotton made shirts, trousers, and the famous traditional Galabeya, the Egyptian loose all in one robe. There are also some nice scarves, bed sheets, and bed covers sold almost everywhere in Egypt.

T he Great Pyramid, the Valley of the Kings, the Nile, the Red Sea — these very names are redolent of grand adventures and the golden age of travel. Egypt has so many knock-out sights, it’s hard to know where to begin. A tour operator will help you make sense of it all and plan your time most wisely, leaving you free to concentrate on enjoying yourself.

There are myriad options, whatever your time, budget, group size and interests, though almost all will include some sort of sailing trip down the Nile. Most will also provide expert local guides who can bring the ancient history of the country to life and organise day-to-day logistics. Be sure to check what’s included in the itinerary when booking; some will cover everything except gratuities and travel insurance; others will sort out domestic travel and accommodation but otherwise leave you to your own devices.

1. Slow boat to Aswan, Wild Frontiers

Allow life to really slow down on this unique ten-day trip along the Nile from Luxor to Aswan, with four nights spent on a private houseboat. You’ll visit the big temple complexes, including Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and Abu Simbel, but there are a load of attractions included that aren’t on traditional itineraries, including Daraw camel market and the ancient stone quarries at El Silsila. There’s also an emphasis on local life away from historic sites, with stops at small villages on the riverbank likely to be a highlight. The rate doesn’t include flights.

2. Egyptian family adventure, Exodus

Riding a camel in front of the pyramids, catching a sleeper train from Cairo to Aswan, sailing on a felucca down the Nile, watching a light show at Karnak temple, snorkelling in the Red Sea — what child isn’t going to like that? These are some of the activities on offer as part of this nine-day family tour of Egypt, with tour guide, flights and meals included. The itinerary packs in a lot but there’s still plenty of time for you to explore on your own or to relax; another bonus for families is that all the hotels have swimming pools.

3. Explore Egypt, Intrepid

With 15 days at your disposal, you cover a lot of ground on this small group tour run by Intrepid in conjunction with Lonely Planet. You’ll start in Cairo before heading down to Luxor and Aswan for temple visits and a Nile river cruise on a felucca; you’ll also get to relax on the Red Sea, and head to the Mediterranean city of Alexandria. One of the highlights is a night spent at a homestay in a Nubian village near Aswan. Note that there is a lot of free time on the itinerary, and you’ll need to pay for entry into any sites you visit on your own; flights are also excluded from the price.

4. Dreams of Egypt, Wendy Wu

Two of the many highlights on this 11-day trip are the means of transport you’ll use to get between locations. There’s the first-class sleeper train you’ll take from Cairo to Luxor, having already visited the pyramids, old Cairo and Alexandria; and there’s the boat you’ll call home for four nights as you cruise between Luxor and Aswan, hopping on and off to visit historic sites along the Nile valley. Before flying home, you’ll get to see the pyramids again — this time at night, to enjoy the Sound and Light show. All guides, meals and flights are included.

5. Family Egyptian Sphinx, pyramids and Nile river, Explore!

This is the sort of family trip that’ll form life-long memories for you and your kids. You’ll visit all the famous sights you’ve heard about, including the pyramids of Giza and the Valley of the Kings, and you get to experience a proper adventure along the way. Likely highlights for your children are spending the night sleeping on the deck of a felucca, playing with local kids in a Nubian village and snorkelling over the reefs at the Red Sea. With only three days, what can you do in Egypt? Quite a lot, as it turns out. G Adventures has a three-day itinerary that whisks you from Cairo to Alexandria and back again. You’ll spend time in Coptic and Islamic Cairo, go on a food tour through the city, take a felucca ride down the Nile, have a seafood lunch by the Mediterranean, and visit a Roman theatre and catacombs in Alexandria. As flights aren’t included in the rate, this could be a good option to tag on to the beginning or end of a longer holiday in Egypt.

7. Wonders of the Nile: Cairo to Aswan, Riviera Travel

Home for 14 nights is the MS Mövenpick Darakum, which, with 52 cabins, is one of the larger boats to take to the waters of the Nile. Unlike most tours, you’ll journey on board all the way south to Aswan from Cairo, rather than start from Luxor. You’ll also stop at a number of sites not normally covered on other itineraries, including the temples at Dendera and Abydos and the ruined city of Amarna. Four of the nights on this eight-day itinerary are spent on the Sanctuary Nile Adventurer, a supremely comfortable 32-cabin boat complete with swimming pool, sun deck, library and games room. You’ll spend the days drifting down the Nile in the company of expert Egyptologists, who’ll give lectures on board and accompany you on the frequent trips to ancient sites along the river, including the Valley of the Queens, Philae Temple and Karnak. Take in the views from the Citadel and the old city gates – known as Bab Zuweila , Bab al-Futuh and Bab an Nasr – and admire the intricate details of the area’s stunning mosques. 2. Marsa Alam

Life is definitely better when you’re scuba diving through colorful corals and swimming with dolphins, dugongs and sea turtles in Marsa Alam ’s beautiful blue waters. The site of the magnificent ancient city of Thebes, Luxor is said to preserve a third of the world’s ancient monuments between the pillars of its majestic temples. Dubbed the world’s greatest open-air museum, the capital of Upper Egypt recently celebrated the grand reopening of the 2.7km (1.7 mile) Avenue of the Sphinxes, an ancient thoroughfare connecting Karnak Temple , home of the famed Temple of Amun-Ra , and the impressively preserved Luxor Temple .

A sunrise hot air balloon ride will give you a captivating bird's-eye view of this city of ancient wonders. Once you're back on the ground, head to Hatshepsut Temple and Medinet Habu – two massive ancient architectural wonders that feature prominently on travelers' Instagram feeds – and cross the river to the Valley of the Kings , the royal burial site of Tutankhamun, Seti I and Ramses II.

Palm trees and patches of greenery cling to the dusty riverbanks of Aswan , one of Egypt’s most tranquil locations, celebrated for the unmatched hospitality of its Nubian community. Sail your way to any of the 20 river islands accessible by felucca, the traditional wooden sailboats that ply the river Nile.

Local tip: If you’re willing to wake up at 3am for the journey south across the desert, a day trip to Abu Simbel is a history buff’s dream; the whole temple complex was moved when the valley was flooded by the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s. If you’d rather let the sun wake up before you, explore Aswan’s Temple of Isis , also moved from its original location on Philae Island.

5. Black and White Deserts

The appeal of Egypt’s Black and White Deserts is quite literally black and white. These monochrome landscapes are like something out of a sci-fi movie, but the surreal scenery is a product of natural geology – the White Desert’s uniquely shaped limestone rock formations give the illusion of a snowscape, while the Black Desert features small black volcanic stones scattered over bright orange-colored sand.

A visit to either of these desert areas is perfect for a stargazing camping trip – it's the ultimate escape for anyone who’s had their fill of temples and big city traffic. The White Desert and Black Desert lie just south of the Bahariya Oasis , in Egypt’s Western Desert , which is accessible by bus from Cairo.

Local tip: While you’re out there, make sure you visit Crystal Mountain, a natural rock arch surrounded by glittering walls of quartz crystals, and Djara Cave, one of the country's most impressive, stalactite-filled caves. You’ll need to crouch down to enter the cave, but once inside, the ceiling looks like it’s coated in giant icicles. 

6. Egypt's Mediterranean Coast

Egypt’s northern shoreline – affectionately known as El Sahel, meaning "The Coast" – is the ultimate summer escape on the shores of the Mediterranean. This sun-kissed coastal strip comes alive from May to September every year, drawing hordes of beach bums by day, and a veritable who’s who of Egypt’s party people by night.

The strip is lined with luxurious hotels and resorts, upscale residential compounds and world-class restaurants such as The Smokery Beach at Stella di Mare  and  Kiki's Beach at Hacienda White. The shores of Sahel are where you’ll find most of Cairo’s millennial and Gen Z crowd on Egypt’s hottest summer days.

7. Siwa oasis

Far removed from the mayhem of Egypt's big cities, this little gem of an oasis is home to Siwan Bedouin people who follow a largely traditional way of life, and the town has thus far been only lightly touched by tourism. The locals are Amazigh tribespeople, who have managed to preserve much of their linguistic and cultural heritage thanks to the isolated location of their oasis home.

Siwa is often described as "the Sunset Oasis", and its sunsets are indeed unparalleled in Egypt. Whether you find a vantage point atop Dakrour Mountain or the ruined Shali Fortress , or take in the scenery and serenity of Taghaghien Island or Fatnas Island, you’re promised an unforgettable sunset. You can also expect a lot of mosquitos, so don’t forget your repellent.

Siwa is a prime destination for tourists looking to escape the winter chill and it's a leaping off point for the Great Sand Sea (the world’s third-largest dune field), swimmable hot and cold springs and crystal clear salt lakes where you can float effortlessly, supported by the saline waters.

Siwa is also famed for producing some of the country’s best dates, and you may be able to sample straight from the tree – just ask locals first. Every November, Siwa holds the Siwi Palm Date Festival.

Local tip: Try the local Abu Mardem chicken or lamb – a spiced dish that’s marinated for eight hours before being put into an iron pot and buried under the sand to cook.

8. El Gouna

It’s always sunny in this fully-integrated little town along the pristine shoreline of the Red Sea, just north of Hurghada. El Gouna has become the base for a multinational community of digital nomads, young families, and expats convinced that life is better by the water.

El Gouna has great aquatic activities, and lots of options for hiking and safaris in the surrounding desert landscapes, appealing to younger travelers. It also has bougie boutiques, cultural events and top-tier culinary experiences thanks to its many upscale restaurants, appealing to an older set.

With its world-class services, restaurants and living spaces, it's a great place to visit but also a fine place to set up your seaside office.
