It’s “all aboard!” as we ring the bell for the Holly Jolly Christmas Trolley! From the seasonal warmth of The Local Store, we’ll depart on our festively decorated (and heated!) vintage trolley to explore the shimmering holiday lights of downtown Eau Claire, the Irvine Park Christmas Village, and some cheerful points between. After basking in the glow of downtown, en route through the countryside to Chippewa Falls we’ll hear not only music but a bit of community holiday history, as well as facts about the incredible display at the Irvine Park Christmas Village. Once there we’ll slowly roll through the park to soak in the season, see the site of the Historic Chippewa Valley Electric Railway Line, and cruise down charming Bridge Street in Chippewa Falls. From there we’ll return to downtown Eau Claire to enjoy a crackling fire, free hot chocolate, cookies, and maybe even a family holiday photo with the trolley! All that plus, with your trolley ticket you receive 10% off any item in The Local Store on the night of your ride, as well as a buy-one-get-one free drink ticket for The Lakely next door, usable through the end of the year!
Tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and is open to all ages, however we do ask that any very small infants or children typically requiring rear facing car seats do not ride. Also consider the length of the tour when including small children. Regarding accessibility, our trolley requires entry up three steps from the curb, with a solid handrail on both sides.

Visit These Wisconsin River Towns For Outdoor Art, Scenic Kayaking and The Country's Best Cheese Curds
Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls—collectively known as the Chippewa Valley—are an easy weekend trip from the Twin Cities or Milwaukee.

Justin Vernon of Bon Iver may have put Eau Claire’s cultural renaissance on the map, but there’s more to this indie capital than a certain locally grown folk hero. ( Bon Iver is really great, though. “ For Emma ,” forever.) Situated at the convergence of two rivers in northwest Wisconsin, Eau Claire’s energy flows to neighboring Chippewa Falls and beyond.
Though Eau Claire is French for “clear water,” the city’s name has a murky origin. For centuries, the moniker has been erroneously attributed to paddling French voyageurs. In fact, the likely source is the Ojibwe (also called Chippewa) people, who lived on these lands long before European colonization. They called the river Wah-yaw-con-ut-ta-gua-yaw-Sebe, or “the water of the river is clear.” What’s certainly clear today is that Eau Claire is flourishing as a creative haven. “We’re big enough to have lots of ideas and the people to make them happen, yet small enough that each new reach gets the individual attention it deserves,” says Nick Meyer, a local publisher and owner of The Local Store.
The Chippewa Valley has one of the fastest growing populations in Wisconsin. Most of the activity centers around Eau Claire (home to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire) and Chippewa Falls, about 20 minutes apart. And with its proximity to major hubs—the Twin Cities (90 minutes), Madison (3 hours) and Milwaukee (4 hours)—the valley is an ideal destination for a weekend trip. Adds Meyer: “We’re proud of our spot, proud of what we make and proud to share it with anyone who’ll listen.”
Here's how to spend a weekend exploring Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls.
Things to Do
Arts & culture.
Take in the nation’s largest outdoor rotating sculpture tour , with more than 180 works sprinkled throughout the area. Most cluster around downtown, the university corridor and Half Moon Lake. New sculptures swivel in each May, and Eau Claire adds to the permanent collection annually, too, by buying the piece that wins the people’s choice award. The city also boasts a slew of murals, mostly by regional artists, so look for bright pops of personality around every corner. (A bold mural declaring "Art Claire" says it all.) The sleek, funky, Frank Gehry-esque Pablo Center at the Confluence presents comedians, musical acts and more. Set where the Eau Claire and Chippewa rivers meet, the facility has multiple public art galleries, hosts the Wisconsin Shakespeare Festival, and even offers a full recording studio and learning spaces for community use.
Outdoor Rec
Paddle the calm Chippewa River from its confluence with the Eau Claire in Phoenix Park downstream to Hobbs Landing. Kayaks are best for this popular and accessible route; rent them from Eau Claire Outdoors or the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Environmental Adventure Center. Another way to get out on the Chippewa’s serpentine waters: Score a tube and some cold refreshments at Loopy’s Saloon and Grill in Chippewa Falls.
The Children’s Museum of Eau Claire debuted a brand new multistory building last year. Kids can clamber through an interactive human-body jungle gym or participate in hyper-local activities, like the Horseradish Harvest sorting game. (Fun fact: Eau Claire is home to the largest grower and producer of horseradish in the world.) Traveling with tiny tots? Check out the toddler forest.
Stop into aptly named The Local Store, stocked with eclectic goods from Chippewa Valley artisans— like cheese-wedge candles, hand-rolled botanical incense cones and walls of pop art. Or check out Banbury Place, a massive former tire factory-turned mixed-use complex. Start at Building 13, whose three floors house makers’ studios and shops.
Eat & Drink
Megan Zabel Holmes/Vist Eau Claire
Nearby Ellsworth is Wisconsin’s Cheese Curd Capital, so of course you can expect to find the cream of the crop in the Chippewa Valley. Try them at the retro arcade bar The Reboot Social or Mogie's Pub & Restaurant in Eau Claire. For an old-school “up north” experience, head to Wissota High Shores Supper Club in Chippewa Falls. Start with the pillowy fried curds and chase them with a brandy Old-Fashioned, the newly crowned official state cocktail of Wisconsin. (It’s about time!)
Every weekend from May to October, couples, friends and families spread out on picnic blankets and post up at tables at Together Farms near Mondovi, about 20 miles from Eau Claire. It’s reminiscent of a pizza farm, but here folks feast on gourmet burgers made with grass-fed and grass-finished beef, savor fried curds from Ellsworth, and sip on Spotted Cow (a fan-favorite Wisconsin beer) while bopping to live music from area acts. Pro tip: Bring cash. The lines can get long but there’s a speedier cash-only option.
For an OG brewery experience, visit Leinie Lodge in Chippewa Falls. This German-influenced operation has been crafting Leinenkugel’s Original since 1867. The legacy tour is the most popular, but a new tour focuses on Pilot Brewery, the company’s small-batch experimental arm. Or just go straight for the six-strong beer flight, and don’t forget to snag some seasonal taproom exclusives.
The Oxbow Hotel is named for the peculiar way a river curve can form its own U-shape lake. (Half Moon Lake is Eau Claire’s oxbow.) With record players in every room, complimentary cruiser bikes, and a woodsy, welcoming courtyard with lawn games, this stylish downtown spot embodies the city’s artsy, off-beat vibe. At on-site eatery, The Lakely, sample the koldtbord, or cold board—a Nordic charcuterie selection.

The celebrated Eau Claire Jazz Festival (April 19–20 this year) draws crowds each spring. What began as a UW-Eau Claire effort has morphed into a community-wide experience, complete with interactive classes and a concert series. The highlight is the Jazz Crawl, when thousands of music students showcase their talents at various downtown venues.

Day 1 : Fly to Montana
We fly into Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, then transfer to our nearby hotel for the next two evenings.
Day 2 : Bozeman Farm & History
We begin our day discovering the area’s agricultural splendor at local farms. Venture into the fertile Rocky Creek bottomlands to visit Gallatin Valley Botanical, a family-owned organic farm boasting a wide variety of vegetables, fruit, and flowers. At Alpacas of Montana, enjoy a custom tour that gives us hands-on experience as we learn how the farm owners make quality alpaca clothing and other unique products. We then get to know our fellow tourmates over a Welcome Lunch before visiting the Gallatin History Museum. Built in 1911 as a jail, it has since been converted into a museum that tells the stories of escapes, a hanging, and other mysteries. You can also view battlefield artifacts, old photographs, and Native American exhibits. The evening is at leisure to relax or explore independently.
Day 3 : Gateway to Yellowstone
We depart our hotel for the Yellowstone Gateway Museum, nestled along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail in Livingston, Montana. Browse a vast collection of exhibits that showcase the area’s native cultures, famous expeditions, and stories of early-day communities. There is also an authentic one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, and more. Afterwards, we continue our drive to Gardiner, the original gateway to America’s first national park. Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872 to protect a large variety of wildlife and preserve the world’s most extraordinary collection of geysers and hot springs. We have free time in the Mammoth Hot Springs area before traveling through the northern loop of Yellowstone, where we may encounter the notorious bison traffic jam. Later, we travel to West Yellowstone for our accommodations with shops and restaurants conveniently nearby.
Day 4 : Yellowstone National Park
After a delicious continental breakfast, we return to Yellowstone National Park to enjoy a full day of soaking up the natural wonders with a guided tour. During our adventure, we make stops at Old Faithful, the world's most famous geyser, and Artist Point. Have your camera ready to capture stunning views of Upper and Lower Yellowstone Falls and the multicolored Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. A scenic drive then takes us through Hayden Valley, a region of lush forest meadows and haven for wildlife. We depart Yellowstone this afternoon and settle in for a comfortable two-night stay in Jackson, Wyoming.
Day 5 : The Grand Tetons & Cattle Ranch
This morning we visit Grand Teton National Park, boasting picturesque views of shimmering lakes, rolling meadows, and soaring mountain ranges with snow-capped peaks. Watch for elk, bison, fox, moose, and bald eagles as we venture through the park and take advantage of premier photo opportunities. Learn about the past, present, and future of this protected area during our stop at the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center. We also see the Chapel of the Transfiguration, a rustic log chapel with 100-year-old history. Later, we stop by Mead Ranch, where the Mead family has lived and raised cattle on their original homestead for over 100 years. Tonight, we embark on a covered wagon ride in Cache Creek Canyon to our included dinner – a tasty barbecue cookout accompanied with music and songs of the Old West!
Day 6 : Utah’s Cheese Capital
Step aboard our comfortable motorcoach this morning for one last scenic drive, taking us from Jackson into Salt Lake City. Along the way, we break for lunch at leisure in Logan, host of the Cache Valley Cheese & Dairy Festival. Our drive continues with picturesque vistas of Cache Valley, known as Utah’s cheese capital. Home to some of our country’s best dairy farms, this region once held the title of largest Swiss-style cheese producer in the world! While here, we visit Munk Family Farms and see their carousel milking parlor in action. Tonight, settle into accommodations in downtown Salt Lake City before celebrating our travels with newfound friends at a special Farewell Dinner.
Day 7 : Fly Home
We return home with fond memories of discovering the beautiful Northern Rockies and frontier farms.
