Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

Did You Know? 8 Incredible Facts About Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

By Jim Fanning

Take one cat and two dogs who comically converse among themselves in human voices, separate them from their humans, and send them off on a perilous quest through the Sierra Nevadas to find their family, and you have Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. This Disney hit, the popularity of which inspired a sequel in Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco (1996), is a remake of Walt Disney’s classic 1963 film The Incredible Journey . Released on February 12, 1993, this live-action comedy-adventure celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, so to fete the film and its two fidos, Shadow and Chance, and their feline friend, Sassy, here are some fascinating facts about this beloved Disney animal adventure.

The Incredible Journey

1. The Incredible Journey Began with a Book… and a Movie The story of Homeward Bound : The Incredible Journey starts with The Incredible Journey , a top-selling book by Sheila Burnford. The author based her novel about the unstoppable animal trio on her own pets. Her three animals were her constant companions in England during World War II, and the pets were themselves inseparable. “They were closer than any other dog and cat relationship I have ever seen,” she said of her English Bull Terrier and Siamese cat. “Sleeping in the same basket, hunting and playing together, they made a lawless pair.” Later, a young Labrador was added to the mix, and the pup guarded the older dog when the Bull Terrier’s eyesight began to fail. It was this remarkable animal-kingdom kinship that inspired the author to write The Incredible Journey . Less than a year after its publication in 1960, the book became an international bestseller. Walt Disney immediately saw that this extraordinary story would make a compelling film. Released in 1963, The Incredible Journey became an iconic Disney animal film.

2. Two Oscar ® Winners Team Up One of the primary differences between the original film and Homeward Bound is that the animals talk. Since audibly revealing the thoughts of the pets is integral to the story, the casting of the actors who could convey personality with their voices alone was crucial. Consequently, the Homeward Bound filmmakers cast Academy Award ® -caliber talent. Two-time Oscar ® winner (For Best Actress in Norma Rae (1979) and Places in the Heart (1984)), Sally Field performs the voice of Sassy, the sophisticated Himalayan feline. As for the voice of Shadow, Don Ameche was signed to vocalize the wise Golden Retriever. A movie star from Hollywood’s golden era, Ameche experienced a popularity resurgence when he won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for Cocoon (1985). Homeward Bound marked a return to Disney for Don as he had starred in the popular comedy The Boatniks (1970).

3. Fox Voices Dog When Emmy Award-winning TV and movie star Michael J. Fox voiced Milo Thatch in Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), animator John Pomeroy noted, “He was a virtuoso at the microphone, and he understood the situation and would improve it. He also improvised emotional nuances that weren’t in the script and made the character very sympathetic.” When Fox worked on Homeward Bound a few years earlier, he brought that same vocal skill to performing the voice of the enthusiastic American Bulldog pup, Chance.

4. The Animal Actors of Homeward Bound Each of the animal actors portraying the three four-footed leads worked for up to seven weeks before shooting even began. Each responded to voice and sound commands, and each was rewarded for its performance not with movie-star perks, but with liver treats. The heart of Homeward Bound is of course the unusual bond between the three, which meant normal canine and feline conflict had to be dealt with. “There are certain restrictions to working with dogs and cats together,” said head dog trainer Gary “Sam” Vaughn. “But there are rewards, too. By nature, they don’t get along. But our animals spent so much time together that they have become very close. These animals developed affections for each other and the actors that come through on screen.” Added veteran animal coordinator and trainer Joe Camp, “This is the first time where you have animals, not just performing a behavior, but actually their behaviors interacted between each other. They’re in a sense communicating with their partner.”

5. Beauties and the Beasts Homeward Bound has quite a Disney animation pedigree. Along with Donald W. Ernst, co-producer of Aladdin (1992), Kirk Wise, co-director of Beauty and the Beast (1991), served as executive producer . In that capacity, Wise supervised the writing and recording of the animals’ dialogue and was involved in casting the voice talents. Screenwriter Linda Woolverton came to Homeward Bound after penning the screenplay for Beauty and the Beast , while co-screenwriter Caroline Thompson also wrote Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas , released in 1993, the same year as Homeward Bound .

6. Stand-In Pets and Supporting Players Ben, Rattler, and Tiki, the main animals portraying Shadow, Chance, and Sassy, receive star billing in the film, but, in reality, Chance and Shadow were each played by four dogs, while Sassy was played by 10 cats. The additional animals were brought in to perform specialty actions or simply to give the lead animal performers a break. Other animals in the Homeward Bound cast include a mountain lion, an owl, black bears, a porcupine, and a skunk.

Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

7. Chance, Sassy and Shadow’s Human Family The first Incredible Journey film adaptation focused primarily on the animals’ journey, but this later version was expanded to examine the special bond between a child and his pet, especially as exemplified by Peter (Benj Thall) and his relationship with Shadow. “There is a magic between children and animals that adults can’t touch,” observed co-producer Mack Bing. “This magic was evident on and off screen. There’s an almost visible chemistry in that special relationship that makes this film work.” Producer Jeffrey Chernov added, “To me, the most important part of this movie is about family. The human characters don’t start out as a solid family, but they grow into one.” The animals’ family is named Burnford in honor of the original book’s author.

Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

8. Incredible Journey, Incredible Scenery Though the original book and movie took place in Ontario, Canada, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey is set in California as the pets’ trek takes them through the wilds of the Sierras. In reality the movie was filmed in Oregon. “Oregon is a popular site for filmmaking because of its varied topography,” location manager Mark C. Hughes said. ”In this film, we used parts of downtown Portland to substitute for San Francisco; eastern Oregon to serve as Bishop, California, and the Eagle Cap Wilderness area, which bears a striking resemblance to the Sierra Nevadas.” Filming took place from August through October 1991. Midway through the project, the film crew packed their cameras and equipment on mules and horses and rode more than 15 miles of protected wilderness areas into the Eagle Cap area in the Wallow Mountains for three days of filming in the forest. “My job was almost made easier by Mother Nature,” said production designer Roger Cain. “You look around to decide what needs to be done to the surroundings and realize that there’s no way you can improve on the grandeur of the scenery. I think that the audience will feel awed by how remote a journey these animals are on.”

Movie Reviews

Tv/streaming, collections, great movies, chaz's journal, contributors, homeward bound: the incredible journey.

Now streaming on:

So there I was, sitting in a theater with a lot of kids, watching an animal picture. Worse, an animal picture where the animals talked. And even worse, not an animated movie, but a live-action film where the animal's lips don't even move when they talk. How do they do it? Ventriloquism, or telepathy? The movie was about a wise old dog and an impetuous young pup and a snotty cat. Their human owners are about to go to San Francisco on business, and leave the animals with a friend who lives on a ranch on the other side of the mountains. But will the animals understand that they are not being abandoned? Or will they think they're trapped in a nightmarish four-footed remake of " Home Alone "?  I started to think of possible titles. "Bone Alone"? I asked myself what I was doing watching this movie. And then a funny thing happened. I got hooked by the story. I started to like the thing. The pets decide to return home, by crossing a mountain range. Along the way they have a lot of amazing adventures, few of them possible, most of them fun.

"Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey" is a movie frankly designed for kids, and yet it has a certain craftsmanship and an undeniable charm, and if you find yourself watching it with a child you may end up liking it almost as much. You will almost certainly not be as disturbed when the cat, named Sassy, gets swept over a waterfall and is given up for drowned, because you know the unwritten rule in this genre is that kitty will turn up, wet and mad, a little farther downstream.

The animal actors - Ben the wise one, Rattler the brash one, and Tiki, the spoiled feline - are given voices by Don Ameche , Michael J. Fox and Sally Field . Sometimes the voices are just a little too smooth, but some of the lines are good, especially Sassy's.*

And the adventures are exciting almost precisely in proportion to their impossibility. By the time one dog lures a mountain lion onto the end of a log and the other dog jumps on the other end to catapult the dangerous beast into the river, we have given up looking for credibility, and are waiting for the animals to start solving mathematical equations and picking out simple tunes on the piano.

The director, Duwayne Dunham , and his cinematographer, Reed Smoot , must have had considerable patience to put together all of the complicated stunts in this movie. The animals must have, too. The movie is based on a 1963 Disney picture named "The Incredible Journey," unseen by me. In that one, I gather, the animals did not speak. I'm not sure if they did tricks with mountain lions.

A Dog’s Review: ‘Homeward Bound: An Incredible Journey’ Brings The Human-Dog Connection to the Big Screen

Image courtesy of Walt Disney Studios

“Homeward Bound: An Incredible Journey” is one unforgettable film. Intended for children, this action-adventure comedy may seem like run-of-the-mill talking animal fun for kids, and yet, nearly 30 years after its original release, the film retains its feel-good charm .

“Homeward Bound” tells the story of three animal friends: Chance, an American Bulldog , Shadow, a Golden Retriever , and Sassy, a Himalayan cat . When the ragtag bunch’s family goes on vacation, loyal Shadow fears they are not wanted, and embarks on a quest to return to his family and prove his loyalty . After some debate, Chance and Sassy come, too, and spend much of their time getting the group into trouble.

Does this film add to the conversation regarding the bond between dogs and humans?

“Homeward Bound: An Incredible Journey” without a doubt depicts the endless bond between dogs and humans . Shadow, the old and wise Golden Retriever, is dedicated to his family and will stop at nothing to return to them. He shows his respect and love by being well-behaved and following “his boy,” Peter, everywhere he goes . Chance, the free-willed American Bulldog, isn’t so sure about belonging to a family. At the beginning of the film, Chance expresses little care for Jamie, who he belongs to. But by the end, Chance has realized how important his family is to him, and he bounds into Jamie’s arms. While kids loving dogs are pretty staple in family movies, “Homeward Bound” is sure to drive home how a dog can love.

Does this film fully characterize a canine character beyond being a sidekick, or plot device ?

Shadow and Chance are both main characters, and ultimately get much more on-screen time than Sassy, the film’s cat character . Shadow is a wise old dog who seems to know all there is about being a pet. Chance exists mainly to add comedic relief. However , they are without a doubt the stars of the movie. Chance does little in the first half of the movie besides get into trouble. But, he experiences remarkable character growth for a children’s film about three pets . By the end, he has a shift of personality and decides he is a family dog.

Did the life of the dog cast in the film significantly benefit from being part of its production?

It’s unclear what became of the animal actors in the film post-production. The movie practiced careful treatment of animal actors on-set. This included spreading whipped cream on Ben, the actor for Shadow, for a cake-eating scene. The dog actor loved whipped cream and was trying to eat a little too much during filming. The canine stars enjoyed liver treats as a reward. The actors in the film were not rescue animals and were not “saved” by production. But, they likely had as much fun running in the wilderness with their canine friends as you could imagine.

Does the film help to advocate for dog-centric issues?

The film does have scenes containing an animal shelter, which is depicted as a scary place for the group of animal friends to be . But, it’s not elaborated on much. The gang escapes without harm, and no other animals are adopted or saved. While the film does show the love between human and dog, it doesn’t advocate for rescue, better animal care, or any particular underlying message . In fairness, this is pretty standard for a 90’s animal movie.

Did this film meaningfully comply with the American Humane Association’s “No Animals Were Harmed” Initiative ?

“Homeward Bound” and its sequel are both found to be compliant with the AHA’s “No Animals Were Harmed”  initiative . Many scenes in this movie imply dangerous situations for the animal characters. But, great care was taken to ensure their safety. There are scenes involving a mountain lion chase. However , the big cat was never on set at the same time as the canine and feline stars. For a scene where Sassy falls into a raging river, a stuffed double is used to remove any risk to real cats. For a scene where Shadow limps home to his family, a wooden bead is between his toes. This left Shadow with a peculiar gait, but it caused him no pain. Overall , especially for its time, the movie succeeded in being safe for all animal actors.

Yes, Animals Were Harmed in the Making of This Motion Picture

Elayne Boosler

Writer/comedian/animal activist

The AHA is no stranger to controversy. I remember when at least a decade ago they underwent a thorough revamping due to revelations at how they were being run. Their agreement is with the Screen Actor's Guild to monitor animals and the actors and trainers dealing with those animals on set. There were high profile horse deaths in the movie Flicka (and others) where thorough investigations by L.A. Animal Services after the fact contradicted the claims of AHA that the animals' deaths were unpreventable. Even more so, we all have many actor friends who come home after shooting with animal stories that are horrific. An actress friend of mine related this story to me:

They had to throw a cat in a river, who would come up humorously like a little hero and get out and continue on his determined way. They had a dozen cats on set that day, to replace the ones that didn't come up as they tried to get the scene.

Now, the AHA is not always invited onto movie sets to monitor fair treatment of animals, where things like this can occur. But why isn't the movie industry forced to open its shooting locations to an organization that is there to advocate for animal actors? The industry isn't allowed to pick and choose which movies using young children it will or won't allow to be monitored. The vulnerable should be protected.

Yet how can an organization that is supposed to monitor the humane treatment of all animals on films, like elephants in the movie Water for Elephants , be the only organization that lobbied against a law preventing the use of the dreaded and barbaric bullhooks on elephants?

I am happy for and welcoming of any organization that is set up to help animals. I am sure the AHA does good work outside of its movie assignments. But look, they are paid by the big studios they are sent to monitor. Their livelihood depends on studios being free to expediently film what they need to get. If elephants or horses could pay them, you would see a fantastic amount of improvement in the way animals are made to do what they do up on the screen.

Sadly, the case is that this is more like Eliot Spitzer cleaning up N.Y. prostitution. WHEN he's invited in. There are simply better men for the job, and it should be mandatory. Animals deserve better. They want to please, and audiences want to take comfort in the knowledge that the antics they are enjoying were not tortured out of animals onscreen with a cattle prod, a bullhook, or a trip wire. Let the AHA continue all the other good work it does, and let's bring in independent organizations NOT paid by the big studios, to advocate for the humane treatment of animals in entertainment. Certainly the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) would be a great start for horse protection, and we can go from there. Wouldn't it be great to see a line in all movie credits that truthfully says, "Nobody was harmed in the making of this film, and at the cast party, all animals got a belly belly belly rub".

Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

Leave it to the Disney marketing machine to dust off a venerable nature film like 1963's "The Incredible Journey" and wed it with "Look Who's Talking," creating a sprightly little entertainment that should enthrall tots without straining the patience of their parents. While attimes a bit heavy-pawed, enough kids should answer this call to nature to bury plenty of bones in Disney's backyard.

Leave it to the Disney marketing machine to dust off a venerable nature film like 1963’s “The Incredible Journey” and wed it with “Look Who’s Talking,” creating a sprightly little entertainment that should enthrall tots without straining the patience of their parents. While attimes a bit heavy-pawed, enough kids should answer this call to nature to bury plenty of bones in Disney’s backyard.

Working loosely from the original Disney nature movie (which featured a Rex Allen narration), the studio has taken that frame and built on it–applying animation principles to live-action by giving personalities to the movie’s wayward dogs and cat through the clever use of celebrity voices Michael J. Fox, Sally Field and Don Ameche.

Although the story also gets spruced up with some ’90s twists–like a “Brady Bunch”-type marriage between Robert Hays and Kim Greist bringing their kids together into one big family–the plot still centers on three pets, left with a family friend, who try to cross the wilderness and make it back home.

Popular on Variety

Along the way they encounter various menaces, from bears to porcupines.

The aging Shadow (a Golden Retriever voiced with stately dignity by Ameche) leads the way, followed by the upstart mutt Chance (Fox) and snooty feline Sassy (Field).

The non-nuclear family isn’t all that’s new in this telling, however.

The screenplay by Linda Woolverton (of “Beauty and the Beast,” putting her writing-for-animation skills to good use) and Caroline Thompson (“Edward Scissorhands”) develops a parallel view of family through the pet relationships, as the independent-minded mutt Chance learns about love, trust and kinship from the old dog.

Granted, some of Ameche’s boy-and-his-dog monologues are enough to tempt more jaded listeners to cough up a hairball, but its Mr. Rogers-like simplicity should play extremely well with kids.

For the most part, in fact, the writers have done a splendid job capturing what animals seem to be thinking without making them cognizant of what humans are saying, except for the few words the pets recognize.

The voice-over personalities also work on a more adult level, particularly the snide asides by Fox (in what is probably his best big-screen work except for the “Back to the Future” series, not saying a lot) and Field.

Pity the embodied human actors, completely overshadowed by those showy vocal turns and the four-footed actors playing Shadow (Ben), Chance (Rattler) and Sassy (Tiki).

Deviating from an old showbiz cliche, in this case even children should beware of scenes with dogs.

Duwayne Dunham, a veteran film editor making his directing debut, keeps “Journey’s” pace brisk.

Other stars, no less important than the animals and trainers, are cinematographer Reed Smoot and composer Bruce Broughton.

The great outdoors (shot largely in Oregon) functions as the major obstacle to the intrepid trekkers, while Broughton’s terrific score creates the requisite sense of warmth and adventure.

Other tech credits are strong, and if this venture works, Disney may have a fertile area to mine from its nature library.

What’s next, a blockbuster based on “Inky the Crow” or “Sammy, the Way Out Seal”? The mind boggles.

Good, except for the Humor

Great film for the family, what's the story.

When their owners go on vacation at the start of HOMEWARD BOUND: THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY, golden retriever Shadow (voiced by Don Ameche), bulldog Chance ( Michael J. Fox ), and Himalayan cat Sassy ( Sally Field ), are left with a friend. After a few days, Chance becomes convinced that something's wrong and runs away; Sassy and Shadow follow. Determined to go home, they traverse the Sierras, ford rivers, and tangle with unfriendly bears. Shadow becomes a hero by finding a lost little girl and alerting her parents. Afterward, when the three pets are taken to a shelter to await their family, they again break out and continue their difficult journey. Exchanging wisecracks all the way, Chance, Shadow, and Sassy finally arrive home, where they're welcomed with open arms.

Is It Any Good?

Witty dialogue and well-cast voices make this movie a delight from start to finish. Fox and Ameche do a terrific job of giving voice to their canine characters; Ameche is particularly poignant as the older and much wiser Shadow. Field, hilarious as the snide and sharp-tongued Sassy, constantly berates Chance for his impetuous behavior and less-than-perfect manners. The animals themselves perform some riveting stunts.

As the threesome makes their way home, viewers of Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey are carried along through a landscape full of peril and beauty. Although there are some scary moments -- like when Shadow and Chance confront a bobcat, or when the elderly Shadow falls into a deep ditch on the last leg of their journey -- the banter keeps things light. The well-written script contains plenty of kid-friendly humor, but even adult viewers will enjoy Sassy's stinging putdowns and Shadow's deep-voiced wisdom.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about what kids should do if they get separated from their parents, like the animals do in Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey.

How did Shadow, Chance, and Sassy cope with their fear of being alone?

What is your favorite animal movie, and why? Why are animal movies so popular?

How do the characters in Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey demonstrate teamwork , perseverance , and courage ? Why are those important character strengths ?

25 Fun Facts About 'Homeward Bound'

The perfect movie for animal lovers, 'homeward bound' is a live-action, heartwarming tale by walt disney pictures about an american bulldog and his two best friends embarking on their greatest adventure: going home..

The story of how Shadow, Chance, and Sassy braved the wilderness to be reunited with their family is something an entire generation grew up with. Kids and their parents huddled on the couch together to laugh at Chance's goofy humor and hold each other close when Sassy goes over the waterfall.

No matter how many times you see the Disney movie , you can't help but burst into tears the moment Shadow the old Golden Retriever finally limps over that hill into Peter's waiting arms. It's an emotional roller coaster we're happy to ride over and over.

You already have the script memorized, but here are a few fun facts you might not have known.

1. It's a true story!

"Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey" is actually a remake of another movie from 1963 called " The Incredible Journey . " That original movie is based off a book by the same name which is based off a true story of pets finding their way home in the Canadian wilderness.

Homeward Bound

2. In the original movie, the animals didn't talk. The story was told through narration.

3. the names were also different..

The names and breeds of the main characters were changed between movies. Chance was a Golden Retriever named Luath, Shadow was a Bull Terrier named Bodger, and Sassy was a male Siamese cat named Tao.

4. The voice overs were famous actors!

Chance's character is voiced by Michael J. Fox who is famous for his role as Marty McFly in "Back to the Future." He is also the voice of Stuart Little and Milo Thatch in "Atlantis: The Lost Empire."

Sassy was played by the great Sally Field and Don Ameche was the voice of kind old Shadow.

5. All three animal actors practiced their roles for seven weeks before filming began.

Homeward Bound

6. Instead of fame and fortune, the four-legged actors were rewarded for a job well done with their favorite liver treats.

7. they actually got along, related content, 14 of the best pet movies for your next night in, 'babe' turned 25, and the final scene still makes us cry, what really happened in 'the ghost and the darkness' story.

The idea of having dogs and a cat working closely together was expected to be a problem, but by the end, all three animals formed a real-life friendship. It was their bond that helped make the movie so great.

8. In real life, Shadow, Chance, and Sassy were named Ben, Rattler, and Tiki, respectively.

9. there were actually a lot of animal actors.

Ben, Rattler, and Tiki were the main actors to play their characters, but there were actually several animals that helped play the roles. Chance and Shadow were each played by four different dogs, and there were 10 cats that shared the spotlight as Sassy. The extra animals were brought for special scenes and on days the main actors needed a break.

Homeward Bound

10. The human family in "Homeward Bound" has the last name Burnford in honor of Sheila Burnford, the author of the original book.

11. in the movie, the animals trek through the sierras in california. but in reality, everything was filmed in oregon., 12. mules also helped with production.

In order to film the scenes in the most remote parts of the wilderness, the film crew packed all their equipment on mules and horses and rode 15 miles into the Wallow Mountains. They camped there for three days while they got the shots they needed.

Pack Mules

13. Widescreen does not exist...

There is no such thing as a widescreen version of the movie on DVD. If you want widescreen, you'll have to find it on LaserDiscs (which you can buy on Amazon.com ), iTunes, Hulu, or Netflix.

Homeward Bound

14. It's one of the few talking animal movies where the animals' mouths don't move along with the words.

15. besides chance, shadow, and sassy, a mountain lion, owl, black bear, porcupine, and skunk are all listed as animal performers., 16. there's a mistake after the waterfall scene....

If you pay attention during the scene after Shadow fails to save Sassy from the waterfall, you'll see Shadow walking along the river bank first with wet fur, then dry, then he's magically wet again.

17. Also in the porcupine scene...

In the scene where Animal Control pulls the porcupine quills out of Chance's face, Chance's wounds are on the right side of his face. Then later when they're all looking down into the valley at their hometown, his wounds are on the left side of his face.

The marks are completely gone by the time he reunites with his family .

Homeward Bound

18. Chance was just a natural goof.

The scene where Chance runs full speed into a sapling and keeps going (after calling Sassy fat) happened completely by accident. The dog did it on his own, and everyone thought it was hilarious, so they put it in the movie.

Michael J. Fox adlibbed the lines right after it happened.

19. The line, "Whoa! Gopher hole!" was added to the scene when Chance accidentally stumbled while running through a field.

20. the movie is dedicated to its producer, franklin r. levy, who sadly died during production., 21. it grossed $41,833,324 in the united states box office..

Homeward Bound

22. Rotten Tomatoes gives the family movie a respectable 87% approval rating.

23. the movie's sequel, "homeward bound ii: lost in san francisco" was released in 1996 and was also well received., 24. "homeward bound: the incredible journey" made its official debut on february 3, 1993., 25. the cross-country animal odyssey is now more than a quarter of a century old. the original release date was february 12, 1993..

Did you also know that this movie was directed by Duwayne Dunham, produced by Jeffrey Chernov, and written by Caroline Thompson, Linda Woolverton, and Jonathan Roberts? It also starred the following actors: Robert Hays, Kim Greist, Veronica Lauren, Kevin Chevalia, and Benj Thall.

While Homeward Bound has the three main animals speak to each other, their mouths do not move, but I think we'd all agree that their conversations are just as good as other films that do have creatures literally speak, such as 'Babe' .

How many of these "Homeward Bound" fun facts did you already know? Let us know on the Wide Open Pets Facebook page .

Did Any Animals Get Harmed in the Making of Homeward Bound?

There has been some controversy about whether any animals were harmed in the making of Homeward Bound. One question is “Was any animal killed in the making of the film?” Other questions include: Was any animal used in the film? And why did they leave their pets in the film?

Table of Contents

Did any animals get hurt making Homeward Bound?

While the film Homeward Bound made use of animals, it’s unclear if any were harmed in the making of the movie. It was filmed 22 years ago, and the actors and animals are no longer alive. Nonetheless, a recent report found that animal abuse in Hollywood is still a problem. Some films, such as Life of Pi and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, had animals injured during the production. In addition, HBO’s horse-racing drama Luck had to be cancelled after four horses died during filming.

Homeward Bound does not feature any animal deaths, except for the cat (voiced by Sally Field) who survives the waterfall scene but is thought dead for a time. The other animal character, Chance the dog, gets stuck in porcupine quills, but he manages to get out on his own.

Do any animals die in Homeward Bound?

The movie has received mixed reviews because of the animal abuse that was used during production. Some reports claimed that up to 20 kittens were killed and one was intentionally broken so it would appear unsteady while walking. There were also allegations that the animals were starved and that they were subjected to unnaturally high temperatures during filming.

The film’s pets include Shadow, Sassy, and Bodger. Chance, the young American Bulldog, has a traumatic past, but he is a good friend of Peter’s. While the dog is loyal to Peter, he also takes care of his ailing aunt. Sassy, the family dog, also accompanies Chance and Shadow on the journey.

The sequel to Homeward Bound was released in 1996. The film stars Ameche, Sally Field, Ralph Waite, and a large animal cast of 40 dogs and 10 cats. The movie is similar to the first film in some ways, although it includes more dialogue and different animal names. The film was filmed on location in Vancouver, Canada and in four national forests.

Did they use real animals in Homeward Bound?

While it is often assumed that the actors in Homeward Bound are real, the film has a Disney animation pedigree. The film’s executive producer, Kirk Wise, co-directed 1991’s Beauty and the Beast and oversaw the recording of the animal dialogue and voice talent. He also supervised the recording of the film’s narration. Other filmmaking talent behind the film included Linda Woolverton and Caroline Thompson.

The movie was inspired by the book by Shelia Burnford. It was shot in Oregon and used horses and mules. The cast and crew rode 15 miles to the Wallow Mountains and camped there for three days. This allowed for some of the most dramatic and breathtaking shots in the movie.

The film also features talking animals as the main characters. Shadow, Chance, and Sassy, are all fictional but in reality they were named after real dogs – Ben, Rattler, and Tiki. The actors also played 10 cats. The extra animals were used for special scenes or on days when the main actors needed a break.

Why did they leave the pets in Homeward Bound?

If you love animals and have wondered why they left the pets in Homeward Bound, you have come to the right place. In 1993, a movie crew made this movie, and the animals were actual animals. They included four Goldens, eight Himalayan cats, and a bulldog. The animals were certified by Good Horsekeeping to be cruelty-free.

After the film was released, the filmmakers made a sequel. This time, Ameche died in 1993 and his role was replaced by Ralph Waite. Field and Fox returned to their roles as well. Although the film was based on a true story, it still contains some mythical aspects.

In the movie, Chance, an American bulldog, is the pet of Jamie Burnford. He doesn’t want to be part of the family, but he’s stuck in the Burnford household with Sassy and Shadow. They share the house with two other pets – Shadow, an old Golden retriever, and Sassy, a spoiled Himalayan cat. Chance even gives a speech to get Shadow to climb out of the pit. Chance also mentions “What the Hell, Hero?,” and this gets the audience laughing.

Does the cat survive in Homeward Bound?

“Does the cat survive in Homeward Bound?” is one of the most popular movies for children. This 1993 Disney film stars Sassy, Chance, and Shadow. The plot is based on the three main characters’ lives. Peter and Sassy, the children’s pets, are happy to see the family leaving for Canada, but Chance is not as happy. Jamie blames Chance for the family’s lateness, and the dog is not pleased. Chance doesn’t want to go to Canada and doesn’t like being punished.

“Homeward Bound” also features a cast of talented actors. The film stars Sally Field as Sassy, with Don Ameche as Shadow. The production team cast Oscar-caliber talent for the characters. The movie was also controversial because of allegations of animal abuse during the production. Despite the fact that the film was a classic adventure story, some viewers felt that the film was cruel to animals.

During production, over twenty kittens were killed. Some of the animals were intentionally injured and destroyed in the film, including a mountain lion and a cat. Fortunately, the cat in the film survived the scenes in which she was swept over a waterfall. This is a testament to how resilient the animals were in this movie.

What dog dies in Homeward Bound?

If you’re wondering what happens to the dogs in Homeward Bound, you’ve come to the right place. There are 27 animals that died during the filming in New Zealand. Sadly, one of them was an elderly giraffe. There is also the scene where Chance gets stuck in porcupine quills, but he manages to pull them out by himself.

In the movie, we’ll learn what happens to Shadow, Sassy, and Chance. Shadow is a golden retriever and Sassy is a Himalayan cat. We’ll also learn that Shadow has a limp, caused by a wooden ball that was placed between his toes. It didn’t hurt him, but it made him limp. As for Sassy, she’s played by ten cats, while Chance is played by four dogs.

Chance, the dog in the film, is an American bulldog, also known as Chauncey and Chance. He’s an important character in the film and has even been memorialized with a statue in Dampier. Chance’s death will haunt the entire film, but we’ll see how he dies.

How many dogs died in the making of Milo and Otis?

The film Homeward Bound, based on a true story, has many unimaginable obstacles and distances. While Bucky the Labrador, who had been relocated to Canada, makes it through all of them, he is not the only one to die. Otis and Milo smack crabs, Milo catches a fish and chews on it, and even a mouse gets caught and chewed on by an owl.

The film has been the subject of many accusations of animal cruelty. Some animals were killed during the making of the film, including 27 puppies. The American Humane Association has since launched an investigation into the deaths, as well as those of 28 other animals. The deaths of puppies have been linked to parvovirus, a disease that affects animals’ immune systems. This disease affects puppies the most, as their immune systems aren’t fully developed. Additionally, the director of MILO AND OTIS has been accused of animal abuse, especially when he broke a cat’s neck while shooting a scene. Although the cat survived, the scene in the movie was shot from a cliff.

Besides the dogs, there were also goats, sheep, and an elderly giraffe who died during the filming. The film was made in Vancouver, BC, Canada and San Francisco, CA, and had a large animal cast. The film also included Goldens, bulldogs, and Himalayan cats.

How much of Homeward Bound is true?

The movie Homeward Bound is based on the book of the same name, which was published in 1992. While the story itself may seem fictional, there are some elements of the book that are factual. Among them are the fact that a Labrador was relocated to San Francisco, and that a dog named Shadow was given a wooden bead between his toes, causing him to limp. Despite the fact that the story is fictional, the book and the film are based on real events.
