You choose the hours that you work, our self-employed packages are completely flexible. It's your business, so the more hours you put in, the more you get out.

Is there a minimum sales value?

There are no sales values put in place for you. What you achieve is simply down to you and how much hard work you put in.

How long will it take to be up and running?

Once we receive your signed consultancy agreement, we can have you up and running in four to six weeks.

What kind of support will I receive?

You are supported by travel industry professionals working in a number of head office departments. In addition to this you will have a dedicated homeworking support team as well a business development team who are on hand to answer queries and give you advice on how to market your business.

How much can I earn?

That is entirely up to you, the more you put in the more you get out. The earning potential is unlimited. Our top sales-people all say that they make more now, than they ever could working in a branch/call center. Several of our homeworkers' profit was over £100k last year, of which they receive 60%.

Are there monthly management fees?

What are the benefits of becoming a homeworker?

  • Share by email

Being a homeworker has many perks. Tamara Hinson takes a closer look at how you can make the most of them

There’s never been a better time to be a homeworker. As companies are recognising the value that homeworkers can add to their organisations, more and more are rolling out benefits designed to appeal to the growing number of people who are craving a better work-life balance.

While Travel Counsellors was an early entrant into the homeworking market, much has changed since it launched in the 1990s. Jim Eastwood, the company’s global sales director, recognises how homeworkers’ needs are different now compared to before.

“It’s about providing individuals with a truly personalised, digital platform of support to empower them to run their own businesses in a way that suits them, their families and their customers,” he says. “So, it’s no longer just about ‘homeworking’, it’s about smarter working, creating limitless potential, enhanced wellbeing and a better work-life balance.”

Have laptop, will travel

One of the perks of being a homeworker is that, for the majority, you can work where you want, when you want. And those who want to take time off will find it’s actually quite flexible. In some companies, homeworkers will “buddy up” with a colleague who will provide cover during periods of absence for holidays when they’re unable to take bookings.

However, more homeworkers are continuing to work – or at least process bookings – abroad, sometimes while on fam trips. These trips can be a brilliant and effective way of expanding your knowledge on a particular destination or product.

F3 copy 2

“When our franchisees do fam trips, it gives them first-hand knowledge of the product, so they can sell to their clients,” says Samantha Bruton, head of franchise at GoCruise & Travel. “For example, we had a franchisee attend the Clia RiverView Conference in March and experience AmaWaterways’ product, and in May alone they made 15 AmaWaterways bookings.”

Wellbeing first

The topic of mental health has never been in the spotlight more than it is now. Homeworking companies have been investing more time and money to look after their homeworkers’ mental health and wellbeing, and ensure they remain connected and part of the team.

Damian Mc Donough, business development director at Vertical Travel Group, says keeping lines of communication open is one of the company’s priorities. “Communication is key to our approach when it comes to mental health,” he says.

“We have a Facebook group – Vertical Travel Talk – for all staff to share thoughts, feelings, advice, successes, failures, funny stories and problems. You name it, it’s all on there!”

The company recently vowed to send out more email updates, and also host regular coffee mornings with company chief executive Peter Healey. There will be more regional get-togethers and more in-house fam trips too.

Travel Counsellors has a Wellbeing Hub for its homeworkers, where they can find advice on mental health, mindset, financial advice and physical wellbeing.

Alongside investing in mental health first aiders, the company has a personal counsellor and has partnered with mental health support service Able Futures to offer agents access to an experienced healthcare professional who can provide mental wellbeing support at work.

F3 copy 1

Those working at Travel Counsellors are also encouraged to join community support networks that cover everything from menopause to neurodiversity.

Take time away

As a homeworker, it’s important to take a proactive approach to your mental health, making sure you’re not glued to your laptop 24/7. The good news? Being a homeworker means you’re not always tied to fixed schedules.

InteleTravel launched a weekly podcast this year that agents can listen to when they’re out and about, with interviews, trends and more, to help agents with their sales.

Claire Titcombe, a homeworker at Personal Holiday Advisors, part of Constant Travel, says: “I walk my dog every day come rain or shine to get some fresh air.”

She adds: “I also arrange a lot of face-to-face meetings with clients in local coffee shops. Just changing your scenery can do wonders.”

Building a community

Companies go all out to make sure that their homeworkers can access any help when they need it.

At Hays Travel, each member is assigned a business development coach, of which there’s a ratio of 1:40. “They are there for the day-to-day questions, but also to support the PTCs grow their business,” says Tanya Cooper, head of the Personal Travel Consultants at Hays Travel.

Companies also have initiatives in place to make their homeworkers feel part of a team, and to ensure that they don’t feel isolated or lonely.

Homeworkers at Private Travel Designers, which works in partnership with Elegant Resorts, have weekly catch-ups via Microsoft Teams with their support manager, as well as monthly team meetings, quarterly team away days and a yearly trip abroad.

There’s a WhatsApp group for the homeworkers, who, in addition to remote supplier training, can attend regular training workshops with colleagues around the country and at the company’s offices in Chester.

Technology has been key to helping homeworkers feel part of the bigger picture. “We have a strong community for our Personal Travel Agents, the centre of which is our ‘virtual office’ where our agents gather daily to share knowledge, successes and challenges,” says Sheena Whittle, head of Co-op Travel’s The Personal Travel Agents.

F3 copy 3

Whittle adds that homeworkers actively seek out opportunities for catch-ups. “We all love to get together in person and have regular roadshows, coffee mornings, afternoon teas, pop-up picnics, conference and VIP trips.

“There’s always something to look forward to and this summer we’re embarking on our first beach clean-ups together.”

Things to remember

  • Try to attend in-person events whenever you can – as well as gleaning crucial knowledge, you will also form firm friendships with fellow homeworkers.
  • Consider your set-up at home – are you in a home office? Or do you prefer to work from somewhere else? You’ll have the flexibility to work where is best for you.
  • Make the most of the training that’s on offer from other suppliers – the benefit of being a homeworker is you can fit this in when it works best for you.
  • Many homeworking companies have welfare funds and support groups. Make sure you find out what support is available, and make full use of it.
  • As well as in-person events, many companies host virtual meetings, events and informal catch-ups to help everyone to feel connected and motivated.

Ask the homeworkers

Nicola Nies

Nicola Nies, Luxury Holidays and Honeymoons

“I get to work around my children. I enjoy the flexibility”

“I was never cut out for a nine-to-five job and working my own hours suited me perfectly. I get to work around my children and have been able to continue supporting my family without having to put them

into childcare. I enjoy the flexibility and getting to know my clients. When I’ve found out exactly what the client is looking for and all boxes are ticked, I get a message from my client thanking me for the best holiday ever, which is the best feeling.

Luxury Holidays and Honeymoons provides lots of ongoing training and I gain so much knowledge from my colleagues. I tried to attend as many in-person events as I could before my baby was born in February, although I’m now able to take my baby with me to company events.”

Rebecca Halliday

Rebecca Halliday, Momente Travel, an affiliate of InteleTravel

“There’s a huge support network, so while it’s my own business, I also feel like I’m a part of something”

“I launched my business at the end of June 2022 – prior to this I had been in large corporations and held director-level positions.

There has been so much training available, along with a huge support network, so while it is my own business, I also feel like I’m a part of something.

Having access to all the suppliers from day one was the main selling point for me. The support and training is endless and varied. There are in-person events, webinars – live and recorded – and there’s plenty of stuff to read.

I absolutely love it when somebody comes to you with an idea that they think is not possible to achieve and you can make it a reality for them. I also love getting in front of suppliers and resorts at the travel events as I find I learn well from speaking to people and I love to have a big network.”

Become a Homeworker

Become A Travel Industry Homeworker

The Vertical Travel Group offers you a recognised brand with financial security, plus the support from an experienced management team second to none! We know a thing or two about homeworking-but then we were the originators of this concept from the days of Future Travel.

We offer our agents the benefits one would expect, and more.

Take a look at our support package, which starts from initial implementation through to ongoing actions that will help you grow a profitable business.

The PTS Homeworker and Independent Travel Agent Solution

In the past couple of years, PTS has been repeatedly approached by travel homeworker and independent travel agent businesses alike for a more profitable solution to sell travel with complete Package Travel Regulations compliance.

So, today, we launch an impressive new product and solution to experienced homeworkers that will disrupt the travel homeworking market as you know it.

PTS has led extensive industry research for development and soon realised that incredibly experienced homeworkers could be accomplishing over £500K turnover with ease but actually only earn as little as £18k a year. This just seemed crazy to us.

We appreciate that travel is not a high-income industry. But, when it comes to Independent Travel Agents and travel homeworkers, it is you that are the drivers. In our eyes, you should have the opportunity to earn to your full potential. In our opinion, consumers don’t book travel with just a brand, consumers book with the person. The sales person – The Independent Travel Agent or Travel Homeworker – is undoubtedly the most important element to sales and success of any travel business. It is YOU that is the key to success. So we devised the very solution so that you could start to earn in correlation with your success.

At PTS our question to solve was – how can we enable homeworkers to earn more?

Firstly, Let’s Explain Where The Travel Industry Is Today?

In light of the major travel agents, Thomas Cook, TUI, and the likes, now undercutting agent rates it leaves it impossible for Independent Travel Agents and Travel Homeworkers to compete.

At PTS we understand homeworkers and Independent Agents are miffed, to say the least. We understand your point of view – because of you and your support through the tough times the big travel agencies are in a stronger position today. But, we also understand why big companies are moving to direct sales. In short, online and direct consumer sales is the ONLY future.

Furthermore, many consortiums and homeworking solutions now prevent home workers dynamic packaging. Some companies have even gone to the lengths of making all homeworkers employees.

Consortiums are there to fully support a home worker and are there to help people looking to begin a career in the travel sector. As such consortiums give you access to all of their suppliers and the ability to sell under their umbrella. For this service, you can pay anything between 30% and 60% commission. For the travel homeworkers that are at the beginning of their journey, or for those that are content to pay this amount for the support – the existing solutions are great.

But, for the independent travel agents that are confident in their ability, want to be able to dynamic package, and would like to keep 100% of the commission then PTS has the ideal solution

The PTS Independent Travel Agent and Travel Homeworker Solution – Explained

The PTS solution is only available to experienced travel professionals who fit the following pre-requisites.

  • At least two years experience in the travel industry
  • Proven to be turning over more than £250k per annum
  • An existing client database or extensive marketing knowledge

PTS does not take a commission. The PTS business model is built for transaction fees so we take nominal fees per transaction for incoming and outgoing funds. This leads to an extensive drop in costs to the Independent Travel Agent and allows you to have more control and earn more personally. To compare take a look at our earnings comparison calculator on the dedicated Travel Homeworkers page.

At PTS we enable you, and fully support you, to set up your own ATOL for only £740 + VAT, arrange your own merchant facilities so you can take credit and debit card payments from £100 set up fee with exceptional card rates. Merchant Services solution for a travel business can be tricky but PTS makes it simple through effective partnerships with merchant providers.

Most importantly PTS has developed a bespoke software system for Independent Travel Agents and Travel Homeworkers to manage clients, manage bookings, manage ATOL certificates, supplier payments, diary system, notes system, reconciliation, and full access to supplier API links with discounted agency rates. And most importantly you can add any supplier you want to work with – PTS does not limit you to only work with their preferred suppliers. PTS want to enable our members and help you to be fully independent and as successful as possible.

Remember, we work on a transaction basis so the more transactions (bookings) you make the better it is for PTS. In essence, PTS is only successful based on your success.

PTS are excited to welcome Independent Travel Agents and Homeworkers and we look forward to helping you build your own brand and be masters of your own travel business.

If you’d like to discuss this further, please get in contact with one of Protected Trust Services’ (PTS) lovely staff members by calling 0207 190 9988 . Or, you can visit our member support and travel trust account pages to learn more about how we protect you.

“I am just coming up to 4 years of working for Honeymoon Dreams, as a home worker, and am loving every minute of it.

Previously I have worked for two other home working companies, and have found Honeymoon Dreams best suites me and my family life. They are very flexible, which is great, as having 2 children, I have been able to go to all of my children’s activities at school and haven’t missed one.

You need to be disciplined working from home, I tend to find that clients sort out my working hours, as I am able to work around them. Honeymoon Dreams have and continue to provided me with leads, and I have never been short of enquiries.

I receive lots of support from head office, and if I ever need help or advice, there is always someone to talk too. The admin, concierge and marketing support is superb, they help deal with Aftersales queries, leaving me time to focus on new business.

The in-house system is great, as any amendments or changes made to my bookings, I receive an alert, meaning I am always up to date, and this helps keep a great rapport going with my clients. ”

New to TTG?

The homeworker: ‘homeworking doesn’t equate to alone-working’.

Ben Casey

There are some common misconceptions about what it means to be a homeworker. It’s lonely. You’re by yourself, going it alone. It’s not a steady or reliable income. You’re always working and can never switch off.

eCard

There’s no support if something goes wrong. It’s a pre-retirement job for a bit of extra income. You’re just in it for the perks. You don’t really know what you’re doing.

Some of these come from those on the outside looking in who might be considering homeworking for themselves. Often, though, they are levelled at us by others from within travel. While some of these points may be based on very loose truths, they’re certainly not accurate and often unfair.

We’re not employees. We’re entrepreneurs. We make the rules and can steer our businesses for ourselves in a way that works best for us as individuals, which is great as we all have different backgrounds and personal circumstances to navigate. It’s not one-size fits-all, and nor should it be.

That’s the beauty of running your own travel business from home.

For some, it might be a new chapter in their lives as they head towards retirement and want to do something fun for themselves to bring in a bit of extra income, something they’ve perhaps always wanted to do but felt hesitant or apprehensive. For others, it’s a path to building an empire, particularly for those entering the industry at a younger age and see it as their career for the next 30 years.

A number of fellow homeworkers have recently expanded, and have been bringing new team members onboard to grow sales capacity and extend behind-the-scenes support in the name of growth and enabling progression that may have stalled owing to the pandemic.

Many homeworkers are now back on track and in need of support to not only continue growing their business, but also – importantly – to regain the work-life balance they’ve lost in the recent few years.

In the course of running my own travel brands over the past four years, I’ve come to realise that homeworking doesn’t equate to alone-working. In the past year, I’ve recruited a full-time concierge manager in addition to a part-time admin assistant I brought onboard previously.

With strong foundations now in place for my business, I’m delighted to have recently recruited two new home-based travel consultants to expand the income-generating capacity within my business. Both bring a sales-focused outlook and are fantastic relationship managers, as well as well-connected people with a passion for travel.

Yet neither have any travel industry experience, and I embrace that. I’m a firm believer you can educate people on destinations and product, but you can’t teach personality, charisma and drive. That’s one of the misconceptions held throughout the industry that many of us homeworkers dispel each and every day – and we should be shouting about it.

Ben Casey and team_100124.jpg

We often see stories in the trade press of high street travel agencies opening a new shop or buying a competitor, growing their teams and businesses, but you don’t hear many such growth stories about homeworkers. Stories about us tend to involve big bookings, or how much commission we’ve earned in a month, which seems more like a polished version of the truth. It’s so much more than that. We are astute business people too, and there are homeworkers out there who want to conquer and break out of the "one-man-band" box we’re unfairly placed in.

So, after being named Home-Based Travel Agent of the Year – and UK and Ireland Agent of the Year – at the 2023 Travel Industry Awards by TTG, I thought I’d share a couple of key considerations if you too are looking to expand your horizons and build your own empire to be proud of. Think of it as how not to go it alone, if you will.

Think who, not how

If you’re nearing capacity and there aren’t enough hours in the day, document what you spend your time on each day and track that against the activities that are most profitable. Are you spending the majority of your time on the most profitable actions to continue growing your business, or are you consumed by admin tasks that distract you? If it’s the latter, consider how you can expand your capacity.

It’s not about you knowing how to or being able to do everything. Instead, think more about who can do certain tasks better than you, whether that’s admin support from a super-efficient PA who can do things in half the time, sourcing marketing support from someone better skilled at pre-empting consumer behaviour, or creating a concierge role within your business to handle all the post-booking and pre-departure admin, while also elevating and improving the service you currently offer.

Ben Casey travelling_100124.jpg

There’s nothing wrong with admitting you’re not "God’s gift to travel". None of us are specialists in all areas of our business. How could we be? I’ve never met a travel consultant who is also a qualified accountant, expert marketeer, proven salesperson, concierge manager, IT guru, event organiser and more.

For me, marketing is in my blood, so I enjoy promoting my brands and managing social media. But to manage the marketing alongside all the concierge elements and, of course, the travel consultancy role itself, became too much, so I employed a former chief executive’s PA and events manager with a key eye for detail and with a military-style approach to admin to become my concierge manager.

I can now relax knowing that once I’ve made a booking, I know my clients are being looked after, allowing me to focus on sales and business development.

Walk out that door

As a homeworker, it’s so tempting to hibernate in the house in your jogging bottoms, especially as winter sets in. But is that the best thing for your business? I’d suggest probably not. You are your own brand. Your personality and charisma are your product, your USP, your difference.

Homeworkers can often forget this and hide behind special offers on social media. Aside from placing greater focus on your personality and successes through your social media channels, particularly on LinkedIn, there’s no better way to showcase yourself than meeting people in person.

The word "networking" sends shivers down many people’s spines, and I was like that once. The thought of walking into a room full of strangers, all stood around in suits, at 7am not knowing a soul terrified me. That was until I found a group of like-minded entrepreneurs and business owners who welcomed me with open arms.

Since then, my perspective of networking has completely changed. I now see it as a very important piece of the jigsaw that complements other revenue streams. Saying that, it’s not just about the money. It’s the comradeship that comes with meeting up with people each week – an extension of your sales function as they open up their little black books for you.

It’s also a great way to have a team around you, particularly if you’re not quite in the position to be able to build a team of your own.

Should I Use a Travel Agent? Our Travel Expert Says It Makes All the Difference.

The new age of travel agents know how to find deals, book off-the-beaten path adventures, and get you out of any jam. Especially if you know who to use.

I’ve always thought that planning my own trips was the most cost-effective way, but I’ve been hearing more about travel agents making a comeback and saving their clients a lot of money. What kinds of outdoor trips should I turn to a travel agent for, and are there any who specialize in working with adventurers like me?

Technically, I’m a professional traveler. As a journalist, it’s my job to research and connect with locals to get beneath the surface of a destination. So I have never really used travel agents. What could they plan better than I could?

A lot, it turns out. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know many travel specialists, and I consider them magicians. My big aha moment happened two winters ago on a trip to Iceland . A massive storm shut down internal flights for a day, causing me to miss my return flight to the U.S. Normally, I would have spent frustrating hours on hold with the airline. But because I’d paid $65 to have Ana Gloria Garcia, an air-support specialist at the travel agency EmbarkBeyond, find and book the most affordable and convenient flight option for me, she handled the rebookings while I soaked in the Blue Lagoon.

A woman soaks in Iceland’s Blue Lagoon.

During the pandemic, agents became advocates helping travelers get refunds on canceled flights and trips. As travel has come roaring back, an agent’s superpower is now their access to the best hotel rooms, most in-the-know guides, free amenities, and more, says Cory Hagopian, senior vice president of sales and partnerships for Virtuoso , a global network of travel agencies.

And they’re attracting a young clientele. According to a recent industry survey , 38 percent of millennials and Gen Zers are opting to use travel agents as opposed to booking on their own trips. That number is far greater than Gen Xers and baby boomers, of whom only 12 and 2 percent respectively use agents.

What Do I Gain from Using a Travel Agent?

I recently had a friend tell me she spent close to 40 hours researching a family trip online. She probably could have gleaned the same intel from an hourlong conversation with a travel adviser. Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks for things you might not have considered, says Erika Richter, a spokesperson for the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). Their firsthand knowledge, vast network, and on-the-ground connections all combine to provide a unique perspective for crafting the perfect itinerary for you.

Kayak, paddle, raft—a river trip down Costa Rica’s Pacuare is good fun. And Danielle Meyer of Coastline Travel likes to book clients in the riverfront, all-inclusive, 20-suite Pacuare Lodge. “The way to get to the property is by whitewater rafting, so you truly begin with adventure!”

Most travel advisers specialize in certain regions and countries and travel to them frequently, so they have up-to-date intel on not only the best safari camps but the perfect tent to book for the most incredible views and the best local restaurants you won’t find on Tripadvisor. They want their client’s trips to go well to keep them coming back, so it’s in their interest to have sussed out hotels and itineraries before they send you out into the world.

Nicole Forster, 29, considers herself a savvy traveler. She’s been to 20-plus countries and enjoys destination research. But when it came to planning her honeymoon in Africa, she felt overwhelmed, so she reached out to Danielle Meyer at Coastline Travel Advisors , which specializes in bespoke itineraries. “Originally, I wanted to go to South Africa, Victoria Falls, and Madagascar,” Forster recalls. “Danielle convinced me that if we wanted to relax, we should stay in South Africa and save the other countries for separate trips.”

Over five phone conversations and multiple emails, they crafted a 15-night itinerary that included Cape Town, the winelands, the Cape Peninsula, and a safari at the Thornybush Game Reserve. Forster established her budget early in the process, and Meyer sent her a variety of lodge options to choose from.

“I initially wanted to start with the safari, but she pointed out that we’d be jet-lagged and would need to wake at sunrise for game drives,” says Forster. “The safari was our highlight, so it was a perfect way to end the trip.”

A man sitting in an open-air vehicle while on safari in South Africa smiles at the camera while an elephant is just over his shoulder, approaching.

Not only did Meyer book all of the flights, hotels, and transfers, but she created a detailed, day-by-day trip app for the couple that included useful information like check-in times at hotels and how much to tip guides .

Agents also act as advocates. If something goes wrong during your travels, they’re on call 24/7 to handle it. When Forster left the battery and charger for her camera at a hotel, Meyer arranged for an on-the-ground contact to go to a camera store and buy new ones that would be delivered to her hotel the next day.

The cost for the honeymoon planning: $150 per person. “I wouldn’t use a planner for a trip to Hawaii ,” Forster says, “but if I ever took a big trip like this again, I’d 100 percent work with an expert.”

When to Consider Using a Travel Agent

For savvy trip planners, the best time to use a travel agent is for complicated international travel. It can save you hours of planning and peace of mind that if anything goes wrong in your chosen far-flung destination, there’s someone a What’sApp message away to handle it.

Domestically, I’d consider using a travel agent when planning a multi-week national park trip or multi-island trip in Hawaii. They will save you time, guarantee you get the best guides, and help you land reservations at always-booked lodges and hotels.

Dream Trips Delivered

Jessica Cook and her husband both work in the travel industry. Decision fatigued, they handed their honeymoon logistics over to the team at Askari Travel , an agency that specializes in South Africa. Their original plan was also an African safari, but just as they were about to put a deposit down, the Omicron variant of the coronavirus made headlines. Worried about getting stuck abroad, they reached out to Askari’s founder, Muriel Truter, who is from Zimbabwe, and upon her advice, changed their focus to South America.

Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks of things you might not even have considered.

Truter suggested they stick to Colombia rather than country-hop. Cook supplied a budget and a wish list: 12 days, no more than three destinations, a barefoot-luxe feel, and adventures like horseback riding and mountain biking. The rest was a surprise that Askari pretty much nailed, with the exception of one hotel.

“Everything felt so authentic, but this one hotel on Barú island felt really fabricated and was full of American tourists,” recalls Cook. She immediately messaged the Askari team, saying, “Hey, this place really isn’t our vibe,” and within an hour they were on a water taxi headed to Blue Apple, a B Corp hotel—and an Outside pick for tropical adventures —on Tierra Bomba island. “It was honestly the best trip we’ve ever taken,” she says.

Tierra Bomba, a 15-minute boat ride from the Colombian capital of Cartagena, is an affordable Caribbean destination with a relaxed pace and soft white sands.

Are Travel Agents Expensive?

It depends. Cost varies. Some travel agencies won’t charge any fee, as they receive a commission from the bookings, while some high-end agencies will charge pricey annual membership fees for their services. Still others charge nominal “professional” fees starting at $150. Fees often fluctuate based on the length and intricacy of a trip and how far out you do the planning (6 to 12 months is recommended). You may occasionally come across agents who charge a percentage of the total trip price or hourly rates.

Basic travel enquiries are generally free. In 2016, Leah Smith, founder of Tafari Travel , opened an old-school brick-and-mortar location in Denver’s Cherry Creek neighborhood so her services would feel less intimidating to first-time users. “With our retail-office location, we’ve become part of the community, and both clients and non-clients are welcome to pop in and ask whatever questions they may have, no charge,” she says.

Matt Lindsay, founder of the surf-guiding and travel company LuxSurf Travel , builds relationships with resorts and property owners to get discounted rates that he can then pass on to guests.

Matt Lindsey of LuxeSurfTravel can arrange a surf safari on a 165-foot boat, complete with dive masters. surf guides, and a spa. Guests spend a week cruising around atolls in the Maldives seeking out perfect swell and swimming with whale sharks and manta rays.

Dominic Allan, the founder of Real Latin America , specializes in travel to Belize and Nicaragua and caters to independent travelers who are happy to book their own flights and hotels but are seeking his local intel. Allan’s three-tier pricing structure starts at $300 for up to three hours of phone calls, during which he might weigh in on where to eat (or not to), the best room to request in a certain lodge, or whether you really need a guide to hike.

”Totoro Eco-Lodge, in Nicaragua, has always been one of our favorites,” says Dominic Allen of Real Latin America. In addition to its laid-back vibe, it’s spectacuarly placed on Ometepe Island, with views out to the active Conception volcano. Allen recommends volcano hikes, rainforest excursions, tours of a chocolate farm, and sunset paddles in search of caiman.

Value Versus Savings

If you’re just looking for deals and steals, you might not be ready to work with a travel adviser, says Richter of the ASTA. “Anything you invest in with a travel adviser comes back to you in the form of amenities, customer service, peace of mind, better access to unique experiences, and handcrafted itineraries,” she says. “You could save money by cutting your own hair, too, but most people go to someone who knows what they’re doing.”

Agents work with preferred partners who can guarantee perks for clients, such as free upgrades, early check-in or late check-out, and resort credits. Those add-ons often translate into savings, says Justin Huxter, cofounder of the UK-based Cartology Travel . “We had a client go to Maui for a week, and because of our partnership with the resort, breakfast was included,” he says. When breakfast costs $120 for two, that’s a savings of $840.”

Some of the Best Travel Agents in the Adventure World

Some of my go-to resources for finding a person to work with include travel expert Wendy Perrin’s annual Wow List of tried and trusted agents, the Adventure Travel Trade Association’s adviser network , and the ASTA’s advisor directory .

How to Become a Travel Agent: Everything You Need to Know

A re you great at finding reasonably priced flights and hotel rooms? Does making itineraries and solving booking issues come naturally to you? If your answer is yes, you might want to consider becoming a travel agent. And if you're the designated "trip-planning friend," you're already halfway there.

You might think the the profession is outdated, but that's not what the data shows: According to the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA), 50 percent of travelers are more likely to use a travel agent now than they were in the past. Not only are travel agents needed, but the career's earning potential can be impressive, depending on the type of agent you choose to be. Use this guide to learn how to become a travel agent and kickstart your journey into a unique career.

RELATED: 26 Best Trip-Planning Hacks Straight From Travel Agents .

What do travel agents do?

A travel agent's job is to ensure their clients have the best travel arrangements. Using their expertise, they offer advice and essential details about your trip, make your reservations, book flights and hotels, and manage your travel plans overall. Any hiccups regarding your accommodations are handled by them, and they are the best at finding money-saving deals. Travel agents prioritize your needs, like your vacation schedule and budget.

Their goal is to provide peace of mind throughout the trip-planning process so you can get the most out of your vacation.

What credentials do you need to be a travel agent?

You don't necessarily need a degree to become a travel agent, but getting some training within the field could be in your best interest. This not only makes you an attractive candidate to employers and agencies who may require a form of certification , but also helps you appear more qualified, which can help further your career in the long run.

Even though there might not be a degree in "travel agency" per se, you can opt for a related program like business, economics, or hospitality instead.

What do you need to become a travel agent?

There are different ways to become a travel agent, but anyone hoping to break into the field should definitely keep the following three points in mind.

Decide what kind of travel agent you want to be.

Having a specific focus on the kind of travel experience you want to provide allows you to build the knowledge and resources to best help those specific clients. Suppose you want to work in corporate travel: Building your skills according to your niche clientele and field will help you sharpen the skills you need to develop your expertise.

Learn about the travel industry and its trends.

The travel agency field is constantly shifting, so it's important to stay up-to-date on industry changes and trends to know what you should be offering clients. People's preferences are ever-changing, so knowing what's hot and what's not is crucial. Spend time learning which places are popular and unpopular based on the season, or which restaurants are staple visits. This shows a solid and up-to-date understanding your clients will appreciate.

Build your communication and interpersonal skills.

A large part of being a travel agent is advising your clients and earning their trust, which doesn't happen overnight. Presenting yourself as knowledgeable and approachable can encourage them to trust your judgment and recommendations. This is especially important if you're not working with a travel agency, because you'll have to rely more on your brand and relationships instead of leaning on a company's reputation.

Maintaining a healthy balance of communication between you and your clients is also essential, which means scheduling phone calls, in-person meetings, keeping up with emails, and any other form of communication your client prefers.

Get certified if you can

Getting a certificate can be pricey and cost hundreds of dollars . So, if this option is not feasible for you, that's understandable. However, while certification isn't a requirement to become a travel agent, it can certainly help you throughout your career. Here are a few certificate programs to consider.

Certified Travel Counselor

This Travel Institute certificate requires at least five years of experience and a Certified Travel Association certification. This course focuses on marketing and building consumer relationships. CTC costs $550 to complete the course and $600 for the CTC Fast Track.

Certified Travel Industry Executive

CTIE is also backed by the Travel Institute and requires at least five years of field experience. This $550 program includes courses on travel business, marketing management, bookkeeping, and travel law.

ASTA Verified Travel Advisor

This certificate is given by the American Society of Travel Advisors and teaches applicants about the legalities of travel and how to solidify relationships with consumers. The nine-course program also focuses on ethical travel advising, agency law, and travel agency compliance.

For ASTA members, the course is $399, and for nonmember independent contractors, it's $598. Travel Advisor nonmembers pay the steepest price, which is $729, and $179 for recertification.

How much do travel agents make?

According to Indeed , travel agents make an average of $53,924, and salaries can range between $30,131 and $96,506, depending on where you live. But other factors can affect an agent's earning potential, like working independently instead of for a travel agency.

A travel agent's income also depends on their area of travel. The Hotel Agency Review 2023 report revealed that corporate and luxury travel agents earn much more than agents who focus on Disney and cruise trips.

Your experience level can also impact your earning potential, as agents who have worked in the field longer are typically viewed as more qualified.

Do travel agents get discounts on flights?

Being a travel agent doesn't automatically mean you get tons of discounts and deals, but they do have access to perks that can help make planning trips easier and less expensive. Travel agents have the inside scoop on reduced rates because of their relationships with hotels and airlines. As a result, agents share these negotiated prices with their clients to help them save. Agents can, of course, also benefit from this insider knowledge and save money on their own trips.

Thanks to their agents, clients can enjoy luxury accommodations at high-end hotels like Hyatt Privé, Hilton Impresario, Marriott STARS&Luminous, Four Seasons Preferred Partner, and Mandarin Oriental Fan Club, to name a few. These perks range from spa services and later checkout times to room upgrades and complimentary breakfast.

How do you make money as a travel agent?

There are several ways a travel agent can make money in their field beyond selling travel packages or working for an agency.

Travel agents can charge a service fee, which is a base pay clients cover along with any other charges.

Travel agents can also make commissions from their contracts with hotels, tour/excursion companies, cruises, car rental services, and airlines. Add-ons like insurance can also help boost an agent's income, if their client wants it.

Booking group tours can increase a travel agent's earnings because their commission is based on how much their clients purchase, so more people means more accommodations. For example, booking travel for destination weddings or family reunions is an excellent way to book multiple hotel rooms. It's such a lucrative strategy that some agents make group booking their niche, because managing just a few a year can bring in a substantial profit.
