Technology Jobs Abroad

So you’re the next Steve Jobs, and you’re looking to share your genius with the rest of the world. While the phone-shoe combo iSandal (patent pending) might be ahead of its time, international experience working in the tech world can only get you one step closer to achieving your technological dreams. Taking your tech skills abroad will help you work on your international networking, and give you an inside look at technological research and development around the world. Who knows, with a patent and your passport, you just might develop the next big “thing” in technology!

With the recent tech boom, there is likely no shortage of technology job opportunities in your home country. Even so, if you have a penchant for adventure and are eager to learn about the cultures of the world, seeking an international tech job may help satiate your intellectual curiosities.

Remember, when looking for tech jobs abroad, your competition will be fierce. Companies seeking international employees will also be searching India and China’s labor pools, which are known worldwide for being advanced in the use of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. Given the increased competition, you can expect your international tech job to be more impressive. When working alongside foreigners, you will see how technology actively dismisses borders and is a tool used for the general betterment of humanity.

It’s wild (and wonderful!) to speak Python, Java, or Ruby Rails with someone you can hardly hold an actual conversation with!

Although technology has found its way into almost every countries’ economic sector, not all locations are created equal. Some countries are ahead of the curve when it comes to new technologies, as well as research and development.

China . It is no secret that China is a powerhouse in the tech field, with no indication of slowing down. Futuristic cities, like Shanghai , make it apparent that China is among one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world, with plenty of employment opportunities to boot. China has cultivated a culture of growth and development in order to reap more benefits from the trade-based economy, which has only helped them grow both economically and technologically.

Japan is another technologically advanced country, equipped with one of the most high-tech cities in the world, Tokyo. Japan has been ahead in the tech world for a long time, and with the third highest GDP in the world, there’s no contesting its innovative power. With a strong domestic market and global ties that allow their technology to expand, Japan is thriving, making it a great (but competitive) place to search for international tech jobs and begin your career abroad.

Germany is another country that is rapidly developing new technologies, which is evident when traveling to cities like Frankfurt , Munich , and Berlin . Many Germans are also known for their exceptional innovations in today’s world, but they are also remembered for the technological advancements they have made since the early 1900’s. Jobs in information technology are in high demand in this highly industrialized country, so expats looking for tech jobs in Europe should look no further than Germany.

Technology is a massive industry that provides countless international job opportunities. Not only is it a growing field within itself, but it is also continuously becoming more important for nearly every business and industry worldwide.

Information Technology encompasses many different industries within technology, like computer hardware, software, telecommunication, internet, and engineering. With a need for IT workers in both developed and developing countries, information technology is vital to the industries that exist today. Most commonly related to computer networks, the goal of information technology is to store, send, and retrieve information. The IT industry provides tech job opportunities around the world, making it a great career for those interested in working abroad.

Software Development continues to be another popular job for those interested in the tech industry. The job involves testing, maintaining, and improving applications, and operating system software. With the popularity of smartphones and apps, software development is a competitive field that requires creative, innovative people interested in taking development to the next level. From researching new softwares to actually creating them, this industry follows a process to constantly improve software products.

Social Media includes web-based and mobile based technologies. This sub-field has had an immeasurable effect on our world today. With an emphasis on constant sharing, and exchanging of pictures, videos, information, ideas, and links, people rely on many different facets of social media for various reasons. Social media is important for the majority of businesses today, and that is why it is a great (and #versatile) career path to pursue abroad.

Salaries for tech jobs abroad can vary depending on your location, company, and job title. Since the tech industry has so many different types of job opportunities, there is also a wide range of average incomes. International tech jobs will typically pay over $50,000, by U.S. standards, and this number will be similar in other developed countries and major cities. However, this again depends on your position, your host country’s economy, and the local cost of living. You can expect salaries for tech jobs to be much lower in countries like India and the Philippines, which are technological hotspots, but salaries will remain relative to the cost of living.

While looking for international tech jobs be sure to research the organization you will be working for, find out what your starting salary would be, and take into account the cost of living and other expenses, before you make the big move.

Working abroad in technology will, more often than not, involve working in a metropolitan area, in order to have access to all of the latest technologies and current resources necessary to make a tech job possible. You won’t only find tech job opportunities in big cities, but a homestay in a rural village seems unlikely for those working in technology abroad. You are much more likely to find accommodation in an apartment within close proximity to your place of work.

Required visas are dependent on what your nationality is and where you intend to work, but visas are typically required for foreigners that plan to work abroad. You’ll need to work closely with your employer and your local consulate to make sure you meet all the requirements and receive the right kind of visa for your job. Take advantage of online resources to find out what the visa process may look like for you and get started ASAP!

Time-Sensitive Technology. Technology is constantly evolving and expanding, making this a challenging industry to work in. While it is beneficial to be able to adapt to these changes as technology continues to develop, it can also be an extremely challenging and stressful industry, so watch your blood pressure!

Important Industries. The world only continues to advance in terms of technology, and at a rapid rate, so tech professionals are vital for businesses worldwide. While some industries are more competitive than others, getting a job in the tech world is extremely important nowadays.

As international travel grows, so does US use of technology. A look at how it’s used at airports

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Belgian family of four was on their fourth trip to the United States. They had been dreading the long line at passport control when they entered the country but had heard about a new app they could use to ease their way and decided to give it a shot. Within minutes, they had bypassed the long line at Washington Dulles International Airport and were waiting for their luggage.

“It was always a long row,” said Piet De Staercke of the line to go through passport screening. He, his wife and two sons were visiting Washington and Chicago. “We were a bit scared. But now with the app, it’s amazing.”

As travel continues to boom following coronavirus pandemic-related slumps, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is expanding the use of technology like the Mobile Passport Control app the De Staercke family used in an effort to process the ever-growing number of passengers traveling internationally. And with events like a rare solar eclipse , the Olympics in Paris, and summer holidays still driving international travel, those numbers don’t look set to drop anytime soon.

Customs and Border Protection officials gave The Associated Press a behind-the-scenes look at some of the technologies they’ve been using and what to expect in the months and years ahead.

THE NUMBERS

During fiscal year 2023, the agency processed over 394 million travelers at the ports of entry. That’s a 24% increase over the previous year. When looking at the country’s top 20 airports by passenger volume, officers processed 31% more travelers while average wait times increased 11%. And at some of the busiest airports, the wait times have had negligible increases or even decreased. At JFK Airport in New York, for example, wait times went down — by 0.4 of a second on average — while CBP officers processed 33% more travelers.

Increasingly, people are traveling internationally with their families rather than going abroad alone for business.

Officials are moving more toward app-based technologies to speed passengers’ movement through the airport. The Mobile Passport Control app used by the Belgian family is one example. It’s available to U.S. citizens, but also to lawful permanent residents, certain Canadians and travelers from countries who are part of the Visa Waiver Program who’ve already been to the U.S. at least once.

Passengers upload their photos and information to the app. When they enter the screening area, they get routed to a separate line. The officer then just needs to take a photo of one member of the family and it pulls up the entire group’s photos and their information.

CBP launched the app in 2021 but is now trying to get more people to use it, including by working with airlines to allow the app to be downloaded while the plane is in flight and putting up signs at airports to let travelers know about it. Last year, a record 4.1 million people came into the country using the app.

“Any second that we can save through the process, it saves time because it adds up eventually,” said Marc Calixte, the top CBP official at Dulles.

Last September, the agency also created an app specifically for passengers who use Global Entry. That’s one of the “Trusted Traveler” programs CBP runs that allows certain low-risk passengers who make an appointment for an interview and submit to a background check to travel through customs and passport control more quickly when they arrive in the U.S.

IMPROVEMENTS TO GLOBAL ENTRY

Last year saw a record 3.2 million people apply to the Global Entry program, and this year the agency is on track to field about 4 million applications, said Brendan Blackmer, CBP branch chief for the Trusted Traveler Programs. But passengers have complained about how long it can take to get applications processed and their struggles to get appointments. On its website, CBP says it averages four to six months to process applications. In February, 17 members of Congress wrote to CBP demanding information, saying they were fielding complaints from constituents over the wait times.

Blackmer said the agency has pushed to improve the process, including by allowing nearly 100% of people renewing their status to do so without having to come into an enrollment center. That frees up appointments for first-time applicants. And it’s pushing for more people to be able to complete the process while they’re in the airport, either leaving or returning from a trip.

There are also more appointments available, Blackmer said, although some cities like San Francisco are still seeing so much demand that appointments can take more than 90 days to get.

“We’ve done a lot of work the past year and a half, and the agency’s in a better position now and able to meet the demand for the program. And we’re going to continue to work,” Blackmer said.

FEE INCREASES

Come Oct. 1, people using some of the Trusted Traveler Programs will see increases to the fees they pay. The cost of NEXUS, a U.S.-Canadian program designed to ease travel between the two countries for pre-approved travelers, will go from $50 to $120. Global Entry will go from $100 to $120. SENTRI, for pre-approved travelers on the southern border with Mexico, will go down, from $122.50 to $120.

But the fees will now cover all kids under 18 regardless of which program you’re in.

What’s unchanged is that approval for the programs will still be good for five years.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Calixte said possibly by the end of summer the airport will be opening so-called E-Gates where passengers using Global Entry can use the app, bypass an officer at a booth, and instead go to a gate where their photo is taken and matched to their passport, and, assuming no red flags arise, the gates open and they pass out of the customs and passport control area and are on their way.

Further on the horizon, Blackmer said the agency is exploring a concept called smart queuing, where the app assigns passengers to certain lines depending on information they have entered into the app, such as whether they have goods to declare.

In this story:

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers will avoid an international game once again as they did not land a Week 1 opener in Sao Paulo against the Philadelphia Eagles. The NFL announced the Green Bay Packers are headed to South America instead.

The Steelers were in contention for the Brazil game as they had Philadelphia as a road opponent. The did not expect to play internationaly and now have it confirmed that they will wait another season.

"As we stand today, we don't think we're going to have one in 2024, but soon," Team President Art Rooney II told local reporters at the NFL Meetings.

The Steelers have international markets in Mexico, Germany and Ireland. They're hoping for a game soon, but as of right now, they're taking it year by year as they await their international fate.

"We'd love to play a game in all those places. Not sure how quickly that could happen and so it will be a while before we get to all of them," Rooney said. "But we'd love to play games in the markets where we have that opportunity."

Economy | layoffs jolt bay area: golden gate fields, genentech, intel ax hundreds, subscriber only, economy | oakland international airport to add san francisco bay to name — legal war looms, east bay airport aims to improve its identity with far-flung travelers.

A Southwest Airlines jetliner flies out of Oakland International Airport on April 11, 2024.

OAKLAND — Despite an uproar from politicians and tourism executives, officials who oversee Oakland International Airport voted Thursday to add “San Francisco Bay” to the transit hub’s name.

The change is meant to spur economic growth in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and create a higher profile for the least busy of the Bay Area’s three major airports. But the controversial move may also unleash a legal war.

The Oakland Board of Port Commissioners voted unanimously, 7-0, to approve the name change to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.

“We are going all-in with Oakland,” Barbara Leslie, president of the port’s board, said before voting for the new moniker. “We want to keep money in the local economy.”

Oakland Airport officials say they are concerned that many people who want to travel to the Bay Area are flying into San Francisco International Airport — which actually is located in San Mateo County and not its namesake city to the north — when it would be more convenient to travel to the East Bay airport. Like SFO to the west, OAK abuts the San Francisco Bay.

“The lack of geographic awareness by inbound passengers has created challenges for our airport partners,” said Craig Simon, Oakland’s acting director of aviation. “This is not just about marketing. This is about the lack of awareness about Oakland.”

OAK officials believe the airport’s lower profile has made it tougher for the travel hub to retain routes it attracts. From July 2008 to March 2024, Oakland added 54 new routes. Of these, 39 were lost.

“For every additional route, we add $10 million to our local economy,” said Andreas Cluver, a port board commissioner.

But San Francisco International Airport officials have expressed dismay about the name change — and some San Francisco officials have threatened a lawsuit to block the move.

“We believe this new name will ultimately be misleading to passengers,” Doug Yakel, a spokesman for San Francisco International Airport, said in a comment to the board prior to the vote. “We have an obligation to serve the passengers using our airports by reducing the sources of stress and confusion.”

In 2023, SFO handled more than 50 million passengers. Oakland handled about 11.24 million.

And some in Oakland aren’t fans of the idea, either.

Cestra “Ces” Butner, a former member of the Oakland port board and now an official with the NAACP in Oakland, suggested in a presentation to the board that the name change denigrates Oakland.

“We were surprised and disappointed that no one reached out to the NAACP” about the name change, Butner said. “This appears to be an attempt by the airport to distance itself from Oakland.”

Danny Wan, executive director of the Port of Oakland, which operates OAK, insisted the name change isn’t part of an effort to create distance between the airport and Oakland.

“This is pro-Oakland,” Wan said. “This is to boost Oakland. This does not denigrate Oakland in any way.”

The NAACP had asked the port board to delay the vote for two to four weeks. The board’s president replied that the Thursday vote was the first reading of an ordinance to change the name, and as such, officially only signaled the board’s intent to change the name.

The final vote on the matter is scheduled for May. It wasn’t immediately clear when the name change might occur.

Some airlines have endorsed the new name.

“We believe there is a great untapped opportunity with the renaming of the Oakland airport,” said John Kirby, a vice president with Spirit Airlines. “This will make our flights to Oakland more discoverable.”

Oakland International Airport generates more than 30,000 jobs and has an economic impact of $1.6 billion in the Oakland area, according to port officials.

“We want to make sure that those jobs and that $1.6 billion grow,” Leslie said.

Some speakers also said it might clear up confusion, not create it — suggesting that airlines and passengers have confused Oakland with Auckland, the city in New Zealand.

“I want everybody to be able to know Oakland,” Jahmese Myres, a Port of Oakland commissioner, said before voting to support the name change. “But in order to know Oakland, they have to know Oakland is in the San Francisco Bay. Airport jobs are really good jobs.”

Nashville restaurant Prince's Hot Chicken arrives at Nashville Airport

international travel tech jobs

Greg Puzon was thrilled to get the chance to try Prince's Hot Chicken for the first time before his flight home.

Puzon happened to be flying back to California on the restaurant's opening day Tuesday at the Nashville International Airport.

"One of my cousins said Prince's is where it's at," Puzon said as he picked up his spicy sandwich. "I'm excited."

The storied restaurant — the originator of Nashville's famous hot chicken — is enjoying a renaissance following the 2019 closure of its original North Nashville location. In recent years, Prince's locations have opened on Nolensville Pike in Antioch; on Broadway at Assembly Food Hall; at Geodis Park; at Tanger Outlets in Century Farms Antioch; and, most recently, at the airport.

The new airport restaurant is located in the corridor between concourses C and D. It's one of several new restaurants at Nashville International Airport .

Founded in the 1930s, restaurant lore is that Prince's founder, Thornton Prince III, discovered how tasty "hot chicken" is when his jilted girlfriend tried to sabotage his recipe with chili pepper.

New eateries at Nashville Airport

New restaurants at Nashville International Airport include the recently opened Miami-based Half Moon Empanadas. The restaurant in Concourse B serves Argentinian pies made from scratch with high-quality ingredients.

Other new restaurants are inside BNA's satellite concourse , which operates eight gates, serving mostly serve low-cost fliers such as Spirit and Allegiant airlines.

New restaurants in the satellite concourse include Jimmy John's sandwiches, TexMex eatery TX/MX and Bongo Java coffee shop.

Nashville Airport expanded its concessions extensively following the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused nearly all of its businesses to close due to a lack of customers.

Several years later, there are now about 50 restaurants, bars and coffee shops, as well as retail shops.

Want to see the next total solar eclipse in 2026? An expert recommends booking travel now.

  • 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years.
  • Travelers worldwide will likely head to Spain, Iceland, and Greenland for the event.
  • A hotel expert encouraged travelers to start planning and booking their trips now.

Insider Today

It'll be two decades before the next total solar eclipse hits the US .

Another option: hop on a plane to Europe and turn the 2026 total solar eclipse into a viewing vacation.

Eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told Space.com that up to 3.7 million people likely traveled for the solar eclipse on Monday.

HotelPlanner's chief communication officer, Philip Ballard, told Business Insider that the eclipse was a major revenue generator for many cities. For places like Austin, Texas, and Rochester, New York, it could have created $1 billion in revenue, Vox reported.

"I would say the total solar eclipse has become a global phenomenon," Ballard said.

Ballard added that the next solar eclipse , which will pass through Iceland, Greenland, and Spain on August 12, 2026, could result in similar tourism and revenue influxes.

And if travelers are considering a trip to Europe for the solar eclipse, Ballard recommends planning your trip now.

Determine your eclipse viewing destination

According to Space.com , 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years. Its path will go through Greenland, parts of western Iceland, and northern Spain.

Choosing where to watch the eclipse will be a tough and important decision for travelers.

Iceland and Greenland have some positives. These regions will experience longer totality times, so viewers can watch the eclipse longer. Plus, the sun will be higher in the sky, so finding a spot to watch the eclipse will be less challenging, Space.com reported.

The downside is that these regions are more likely to be cloudy, according to the outlet.

Related stories

While parts of Spain are likely to offer clearer skies, the eclipse's timing will be shorter and closer to the horizon, which means travelers will need to plan and track down a viewing location with unobstructed views of the western horizon, Space.com reported.

Regardless of the destination, according to the outlet, one bonus is that the strongest meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere will happen the following night, so travelers can pack two events into one trip.

Book flights and hotels far in advance

Ballard encouraged people to book their hotels in their destination of choice as far in advance as possible.

"You should start looking now and booking hotels now because those cities in the path are already going to be at peak season," Ballard said.

Ballard said it's similar to when a Super Bowl city is determined or a Taylor Swift tour date is announced — you immediately see spikes in bookings. He predicts hotel occupancy rates will hit near-record highs, and room prices may double around the solar eclipse date.

Ballard's general rule of thumb is to book international travel at least three months in advance, but since this is such an anticipated event, booking earlier is smart. His advice is to start discussing plans with friends and family. If you decide on a destination, book a refundable room to keep your options open if plans change.

Regarding purchasing a plane ticket, a study from Expedia states that international travel's sweet spot is at least six months in advance.

According to Expedia, travelers who book six months in advance save an average of 10% more than travelers booking within two months or less.

Skip the hassle of planning altogether and book a solar eclipse tour

Another option is to let a tour operator do the work for you. A handful of tour companies have seen the increased interest in the solar eclipse and launched tours designed around the event.

These tours will have predetermined locations to view the eclipse, hotel blocks reserved, and itineraries highlighting both the region and the eclipse.

However, these can sell out quickly. For example, Space and Telescope created an 11-day tour of Spain around viewing the 2026 solar eclipse. The tour has already sold out as of Wednesday, and the waitlist is full.

Other operators, such as Wilderness Travel and Eclipse Traveler, have similar itineraries for the total eclipse in 2026.

Why a major Miami cruise company has canceled over a dozen international trips for 2025

M iami-based Norwegian Cruise Line has canceled at least 14 cruises on 7 ships in 2025 as a booming industry confronts global conflict and other issues.

The cancellations include trips in May and September on Norwegian Viva, the company’s newest ship, and ones in April through June on Norwegian Sky, which frequently sails from PortMiami.

Norwegian said customers who are affected will get a full refund and a 10% discount on future sailings through Dec. 31, 2025.

In a statement, the company said that the cancellations “are a result of varied events, including the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and Israel, modified dry dock schedules for ship enhancements, a full ship charter, and lastly, to accommodate the demand for shorter close-to-home voyages to the Bahamas.”

Suspended trips include the Norwegian Jade from Feb. 20 through March 24, 2025. That ship often departs from Port Canaveral.

Norwegian remains optimistic about cruising. This week, the company ordered eight new ships, its largest ever single purchase, a milestone celebrated at Seatrade Cruise Global, a four-day annual industry conference at the Miami Beach Convention Center. They will be delivered between 2026 and 2036.

Since the terror group Hamas attacked Israel and the Gaza war started in October, cruise companies have been canceling trips to the Middle East.

Next year’s cruise cancellations affect passengers of the Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Sky, and Norwegian Viva.

A March 28 letter to passengers said: “We have been monitoring the situation in Israel, and despite our best hopes that it would de-escalate, we have made the decision to alter published itineraries that transit through and around the region.”

For Epic, the decision was made “in order to reroute her and accommodate the early start to her Caribbean cruise season.”

The Sky will be rerouted around Africa and deployed to Eastern, Western, and Southern Africa, a letter to those passengers said.

Viva is being sent to the Mediterranean, passengers were told in a letter.

Despite any security risks, major airlines including United and Delta have said they will resume flights to Israel. Next week, El Al resumes non-stop service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Tel Aviv twice a week. The Israeli airline continues to offer five flights a week from Miami International Airport.

Norwegian in its statement said the cruise company remains committed to taking its guests to “some of the most sought-out destinations around the world.” But sometimes, itineraries need to be modified to “accommodate certain circumstances.”

Other reasons for the cruise changes

But security in the Middle East isn’t the only reason for the changes.

The Norwegian Star canceled because of a “full ship charter.” That means a private organization offered to rent out the whole ship for an entire trip.

The Norwegian Spirit underwent a planned renovation in less time than anticipated, and so now wants to use that time for a longer trip. “As the renovation period will be complete prior to schedule, we now have the opportunity to enhance the originally scheduled January 21, 2025 itinerary, and offer a longer and more immersive experience,” it told guests in a letter.

Meanwhile the canceled sailings on the Norwegian Jade from Feb. 20 through March 25 is “part of a fleet redeployment to accommodate strong demand for cruises through the Panama Canal and to the Bahamas,” the company wrote in a letter to passengers.
