Tour operator, intrepid travel, the intrepid travel experience.

If you’re looking for adventure, you’ve come to the right place. For the past 25 years, we’ve been taking small groups of travelers on unforgettable trips around the world. What makes them unforgettable? Take a look for yourself and discover the Intrepid experience.

Our travelers have three styles of tour to choose from: Basix, Original and Comfort. Each has a different level of inclusions and accommodation, but all have unforgettable real life experiences as part of the package. Travellers can also choose themed trips, such as Family, Sailing or Food, to suit their interests.

Our group size has an average of just ten travellers, which allows us to get off the beaten track, use local accommodation and transport, and really get to know the culture. It also ensures we are contributing to the local economy; by choosing local suppliers we were able to keep AUD 60 million in local economies in 2012. We’re also working hard to reduce our carbon footprint and were the first in our sector to introduce carbon offset trips. This, along with our many corporate sustainability activities, has meant we’re one of the travel industry’s leaders in responsible travel.

Why Intrepid?

  •   Small groups - average of 10 people per trip
  •   Sustainability - pioneers for the industry
  •   Local leaders - authentic perspectives
  •   Local transport - get close and personal
  •   Local accommodation - experience real living
  •   Intrepid travelers - like-minded companions

Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its beginnings in 1989. From two university friends, a typewriter and a kitchen desk, it is now a proud member of The Intrepid Group, taking over 100,000 travelers every year.

Intrepid Travel is part of The Intrepid Group of companies, alongside leading small group adventure companies Peregrine, Urban Adventures and PEAK DMC.

Despite growing into a global business with over 1,000 staff based all over the world and over 800 different trips across every continent, we’ve remained devoted to the same grassroots values and responsible travel philosophies that we had at the very beginning.

On every trip we operate and in every interaction we have with a client, supplier or local, we live our core values everyday:

  • Integrity – Doing the right thing
  • Responsible – Think global, act local
  • Growth – Stakeholders in our own success
  • Innovation – Thriving on new ideas and embracing change
  • Fun – It’s engrained into who we are and what we do
  • Passion – We are inspired by the work we do and the trips we offer

A Group Cycling Tour Across Tanzania with Intrepid Travel

Cycling. We tried Intrepid Travel’s 13-day two-wheeled adventure and we won’t set foot on a tour bus again

0_tanzania_by_bike

Highlights of The Bike Tour

Packing essentials.

Tanzania is a country that boasts almost endless attractions. Stunning scenery, hordes of beasties both timorous and bold, and, topping it all off, the highest mountain in Africa. One thing you would perhaps not instantly associate with the East African country is cycling, not least because it takes a pretty handy rider to escape a cheetah chasing at 100km an hour.

However, those with a thirst for two-wheeled adventure can now take in Tanzania on a tour with Intrepid Travel, which has launched 18 cycling trips all over the world, starting from next March. Of all the destinations on offer, Tanzania stands out as perhaps the most enticing, with the promise of exotic animals, cultural activities and exciting mountain biking all rolled into 13 sun-soaked days. To get a taste of the demands and delights of an Intrepid tour, I joined them in Arusha, northern Tanzania, to do some cycling in the shadow of Mounts Kilimanjaro and Meru.

The Ride of Your Life

Intrepid suggests that anyone with a reasonable level of fitness will cope with the physical demands of the trip, and while that’s true, it would definitely be worth getting in a little practice if it’s been a while since you rode. However, the pace will never be so high that the group splits up, and you might surprise yourself – the toughest section on our tour was a steady 3km climb, and nearly all riders made it without disembarking for a push. You won’t be spending your whole day cycling either, with plenty of breaks and stops to enjoy local landmarks and photo opportunities, so the distance will never be overwhelming.

At the same time, those keen to spread their cycling wings won’t be disappointed. There are challenging sections on rocky dirt tracks that will test your concentration, and also some long stretches on better roads, with both tough ascents to conquer and rapid descents to fly down.

I found the cycling undoubtedly as much an attraction to the trip as any of the pit-stops we made at tourist highlights. Over the course of the week I also realised how much I preferred cycling to touring on a bus. Though tiring physically, you end each ride invigorated, rather than stepping off a bus half-asleep to see the next attraction. Covering ground on two wheels also gives some context to the places you visit, something that felt especially true than when we bounced along a 5km dirt track to visit a Masai village.

Intrepid Travel’s new  13-day Cycle Tanzania trip  costs from £1,940 per person, including accommodation, ground transport, entry fees and the services of a local guide (exc international flights).

Coach flew to Tanzania from London Gatwick with KLM. Prices start from £355 per person one way.

Riders are never too far away from their next stop, here are some of the top spots from our tour.

Arusha National Park

01_arusha_national_park

We were the first group allowed in to cycle Arusha National Park, which is the home of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak behind Kilimanjaro. Meru itself stands 4,565m high, so although we didn’t have to cycle to its summit, there were still some stern climbs to tackle.

Tengeru Cultural Programme

tengeru_cultural_programme

One of our first stops, before we even put pedal to the metal, was the Tengeru coffee farm just outside Arusha. Lovers of the sacred bean might even find this the highlight of the trip, as you get to make coffee from dried green beans. Grinding, roasting and then grinding them again to make the perfect cup.

Ngorongoro Crater

ngorongoro_crater

One of the world’s top wildlife-watching spots, and your best bet for catching a glimpse of Africa’s big five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros) in Tanzania. The vast crater spans 260km and acts as a natural enclosure for animals, many of which can’t escape due to its steep sides.

Lake Manyara National Park

lake_manyara

The trip visits the Lake Manyara National Park on both two wheels and four – don’t fear, the former steers clear of the more toothy animals. We encountered flamingoes, storks, wildebeest and catfish-shilling fishermen on the bikes, before visiting the national park proper, where we saw lions, elephants and hippos from the relative safety of a jeep.

Masai Village

masai_village

On the Intrepid tour, you get to a spend a full evening in a Masai village, which provides plenty of time to feast on goat, learn about their culture, and even provide a hand herding the cows in for the night. Also if you stick around long enough for night to fall, you are rewarded with an incredible view of the stars.

Padded gloves

As the only cycling I regularly undertake is commuting on a road bike, I never bothered to invest in some padded cycling gloves. As a result, the first bouncy mountain bike ride wreaked havoc on my pampered palms, so it was very lucky indeed someone had a spare pair of lizard-skin gloves to lend me.

Padded shorts

See above, but with an area of the body far more precious than your hands. I took one pair of DHB shorts; a couple more pairs would definitely have been welcome in the heat. A gel seat will also offer some extra comfort on the bumpy rides.

Wrap-around shades

You might initially feel a bit of a clown, and the tan lines that result from wearing the sporty shades won’t impress anyone, but the Adidas Evil Eye Pro pair I wore were vital to keeping the sun, and more importantly the dust, at bay.

Has anyone gone on an Intrepid Travel trip in Africa? Seeking your thoughts on their service.

' class=

I would like to go to tanzania with intrepid tavel, too and i would like to know if anyone had that kind of experience before.. do you think is that appropriate?

thanks a lot.

never been on one but seen it around in arusha and serengeti .

spoke to one of the chaps on the bus and he sounded pretty much satisfied for the price he'd paid.

am contemplating taking one overland trip further south from tanzania and this company was recommended so were GAP travels and Kumuka. one more outfitter from south africa but forgot the name.

I used Intrepid to travel to Uganda in September and October last year, one word - brilliant. We had a driver, a tour leader and a cook, who kept us well and safe.

What kind of things are you after knowing?

Just got back from their Nairobi to Vic Falls 24 day overland tour...it was great!

After breakfast, drive on to Tarangire National Park, dotted with soaring baobab trees and varied wildlife. The area experiences its own small-scale migration, as animals travel from Tarangire to Lake Manyara in search of water and grass. Your accommodation here is a permanent tented camp in the heart of the park with wonderful views of the Tarangire River. During the migration periods, you may be lucky enough to witness zebras, wildebeest and elephants passing by the veranda of your tent – a true African bush experience. In the afternoon, set out into the park for a four-wheel drive (4x4) game drive in search of wonderful wildlife.

Watch traders and buyers haggle over the prices of a colourful array of fruits and vegetables – your leader will pick up some seasonal fruits for you to try yourself. Today’s total driving time is approximately 4 hours.

The interactions between the many species of the Serengeti plains often provide some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the world. You may like to spend the morning game viewing on a hot air balloon safari over the great plains. Hot-air ballooning in East Africa can be an unforgettable experience and we strongly recommend booking this extra activity prior to departure if you're interested. Enjoy a full day of 4x4 game drives in the magnificent Serengeti. Watch the landscape change within the park from the vast treeless central plains to thick scrub and forest in the north. Linking these areas is the savannah, punctuated by acacia trees and magnificent rock outcrops. Start at sunrise with a morning game drive, then return to the camp in the middle of the day to escape the midday sun. Take some time to relax and enjoy a meal, then when it’s cooled down and the animals are more active, set out again for an afternoon game drive. Pull up in the park and enjoy a refreshing 'sundowner'; an iconic part of traditional safari life. Dating back to the great safaris of the 1920’s, there’s no better way to finish up an exciting day of wildlife viewing than gathering for drinks and nibbles while watching the sun go down. Return to camp in the evening for dinner.

  • Serengeti National Park - Afternoon 4x4 Game Drive
  • Serengeti National Park - Morning 4x4 Game Drive
  • Serengeti National Park - Balloon Ride (from price) - USD745

Depending on wildlife movements and opportunities for sightings, the morning game drive may continue through lunch and last all day. In this case, you will return to camp in the late afternoon.

The balloon ride is offered as a pre-booked service which will guarantee you a place. If you would rather wait and try to get a better price by booking this locally on the ground, you are welcome to, but keep in mind that this is a popular activity and places are limited.

This morning you will depart the Serengeti National Park and travel back to the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area; one of Africa's most beautiful nature reserves and the world's largest intact caldera. Within this crater lies every type of ecosystem, including riverine forests, open plains, freshwater and alkaline lakes. The scenery is awe-inspiring as you descend almost 600 metres down to the crater floor. Within its 300 square kilometres lies a remarkable concentration of wildlife, so on your game drive you may see some, or all, of the 'big five' creatures that rule here, including the highly endangered black rhinoceros. On the crater floor, grassland blends into swamps, lakes, rivers, woodlands and hills. The Maasai are permitted to water their cattle at the permanent lake and can be seen leading their animals in and out of the crater. Enjoy a bush picnic lunch on the crater floor before continuing with your game drive. After your game drive, return to the Ngorongoro Highlands.

  • Marera View Lodge or similar (1 night)
  • Ngorongoro Crater - 4WD Game Drive

Today’s drive is long and bumpy. You will depart around 7am for a 3-4 hour bumpy drive to the Ngorongo Crater, where you will spend about 5 hours. After your game drive, the drive to the Ngorongoro Highlands is about 1 hour.

Enjoy a morning at leisure. Today you'll learn all about coffee, with a hands on tour covering the coffee process from seed, to bean, to cup. In the afternoon, spend some time relaxing by the pool, or speak to your leader about the other activities available.

  • Karatu - Coffee Tour

This morning, depart the lodge and make the drive back to Arusha. You should expect to arrive back in Arusha by lunchtime, at which point your adventure comes to an end. Please do not book any international flights departing before 6pm this evening to allow for any unexpected delays. If you would like to extend your stay in Arusha, additional accommodation can be booked in advance (subject to availability).

Today’s total driving time is approximately 4 hours. A departure transfer can be booked, at an additional expense, to either Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK).

This unique cycling adventure has you cruising down Great Rift Valley escarpments, strolling through farm villages, roasting and grinding your own coffee, drifting off to sleep among nocturnal creatures, experiencing the culture of the Maasai people, pedalling far off the beaten track to trails where no cars go, and of course sipping sundowners at sunset. With a support vehicle at every step of the journey, take your time to discover Tanzania on two wheels.

  • Get the best view of Tanzania’s landscapes from two-wheels – cycle in the shadow of Mount Meru in Arusha and ride alongside wildebeest in Lake Manyara.
  • Refuel for the ride with a cup of Tanzanian coffee. Roast, grind and taste your own in the village of Tengeru and get a closer look at local farm life.
  • Cycle where tourists rarely go, across the remote, barely charted plains of Lengai in the realm of vast grasslands and misty volcanic peaks.
  • The Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater are two of Africa’s very best wildlife arenas. Fall asleep to the sounds of the African night and take a safari in search of the rare black rhino.
  • Stretch your legs on an optional hike to the volcanic peak of Ol Doinyo Lengai, a challenging trek that will reward you with superb sunrise views.

Operated by Intrepid Travel

Back in 1989, two guys from Melbourne, Australia by the names of Darrell and Manch set off on an adventure to the other side of the world. They travelled to Africa and without air conditioning on their modified truck, they filled it with supplies, some beer, a bunch of aviator sunglasses, and some friends. On that trip, they came up with the idea that perhaps others may be interested in this style of travel too. Just like that, Intrepid was born. Intrepid has come a long way since then, now giving over 100,000 travelers a year the opportunity to experience small group travel across all 7 continents. They use local transport, sleep in local accommodation from Cambodian stilt houses to Moroccan riads, and employ 100% local leaders. With three different travel styles including basix, original and comfort, themes ranging from cycling trips to family holidays, and itineraries crafted with the perfect balance of must-see sights and free time, Intrepid caters to every type of traveller no matter their age, budget or travel style. The company has grown but their mission remains the same: to change the way people see the world through sustainable, experience-rich travel
