Inward Journeys

About  me.

Through various inward journeying of my own, I have gained insight and appreciation for how simple practices, undertaken routinely, can enable powerful and lasting healing. My learning of bio-energetic touch and energy balancing techniques has increased my resiliency, awareness, and connection to a community.  My own journey has taken me all over the world. I grew up in Connecticut, USA, and have lived and worked for years in Scandinavia, Thailand, South Africa, and Rwanda. My education includes social and humanistic sciences which I use to advocate for positive social change.

My training includes Polarity Therapy, Reiki (Okuden Reiki Level III certified), Hatha Yoga,  Cranio-sacral massage, Thai Foot Reflexology, Ayurveda, and mindfulness meditation. I am certified under a 200 hour Integrative Yoga Therapy and International Yoga Alliance registered program by BodyTherapies Yoga in Canada, led by Heather Greaves. This takes adopts a holistic, therapeutic, and energetically-aligned approach. I regularly explore and love to experience other healing arts including sound healing, theta healing, Access Bars, chakra balancing, and TRE,

I studied polarity under Chris McGrath (AUS), Andreas Ledermann (CH), Birgitte Raihman (CH), John Beaulieu (US), Bruce Berger (US), and Shakti Smith (US). Polarity is a comprehensive system of hands-on healing based on a detailed understanding of the human energy field. I have been a member of the German Polarity Therapy Association  and regularly participating in International Polarity Education Alliance gatherings.

Inward Journey

At Church of the Saviour, the inward journey is not simply a solitary devotional path. Instead, it is a combination of practices designed to hold one’s center in the midst of conflict and competing demands for our time and attention. The inward journey is not only centering prayer and listening for God, it is also a journey of self-knowledge and restraint, of surrender and courage for non-violent action.

In 1953, the church purchased a farm in Germantown, Maryland, and in 1956 built a retreat lodge there, inviting people into periods of silence on the land. “The one journey that ultimately matters,” Gordon wrote, “is the journey into the place of stillness deep within one’s self. To reach that place is to be at home; to fail to reach it is to be forever restless. In contemplation we catch a vision of not only what is, but what can be. Contrary to what we have thought, contemplatives are the great doers.”

INDIVIDUAL PRACTICES

Individually, we expect people to practice daily study and prayer. We encourage journaling which may include attention to dreams, places of resistance and dislikes, intuitions and signs of call. In each mission group, there is a spiritual guide who receives a weekly written report which often includes gratitude, confession and prayers for others. That report is prayed over and returned at the mission group’s weekly meeting with one or two questions which might guide each individual’s spiritual growth.

We also expect people to go on silent retreat at Dayspring or other locations, where they can step away from the incessant demands of our culture and listen more deeply to the still small voice of God. In her book, Journey Inward and Journey Outward, Elizabeth O’Connor writes:

To stand in the silence within oneself, while at the same time relating to external events, is not an easy concept to grasp. It will also be understood differently at different stages of one’s life. At twenty, the course of life flows more easily outward. Forty might be the year of balance, and sixty an age when the movement is more inward. Such generalizations can be dangerous, however, since the tides of every life are different, and sometimes at twenty we have been prepared to receive words another cannot hear at forty, and may never hear These are helpful categories only if they teach us reticence, so that we do not burden the young with what they do not hunger for and therefore cannot receive – nor should we burden the old who do not want confrontation with an inner world.

In addition, we understand communal worship to “hold” the inward journey of all participants in a way we can barely understand. We take the sacraments seriously and understand core membership to be an ordination, so any core member may serve at the communion table. Many people understand their mission group participation to be the primary place for confession and struggle in written reports or aloud during sharing time, so communal worship tends to be a joyful and somewhat informal celebration of our life together.

Each community within Church of the Saviour reserves Dayspring Retreat for two communal retreats a year and we have found the experience of shared silence to be deeply nourishing for the community as well as for the individuals who are there.

inward journeys

Church of the Saviour lives out its call to the inward/outward journey together in different communities. Each has a distinct charism and style, but all share the tradition of deep commitment, listening for God’s leading, and servant ministry in the nation’s capital.

Connecting to the Eternal

Contemplation: week 2.

Connecting to the Eternal Wednesday, December 19, 2018

Barbara Holmes, one of our CONSPIRE 2018 teachers, writes about the beautiful diversity of contemplative practices as paths toward the source of our being:

Although Africana and European Christians share a common contemplative history, there are specific differences in expectation and practice. . . .

[While] European mystics and contemplatives often lived in community, they tended to focus on the individual experience of encountering the divine presence. African American contemplatives turned the “inward journey” into a communal experience. . . . The word contemplation includes but does not require silence or solitude. Instead, contemplative practices can be identified in public prayers, meditative dance movements, and musical cues that move the entire congregation toward a communal listening and entry into communion with a living God. . . .

When the word contemplation comes to mind I think of Thomas Merton. . . . But I also want to talk about Martin Luther King Jr. and his combination of interiority and activism, Howard and Sue Bailey Thurman and their inward journeys. I want to present Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Fannie Lou Hamer, Barbara Jordan, and the unknown black congregations that sustained whole communities without fanfare or notice. Like Christianity, contemplative practices come in many forms. . . .

This is how Howard Thurman describes the embodied locus of contemplation:

There is in every person an inward sea, and in that sea is an island and on that island there is an altar and standing guard before that altar is the “angel with the flaming sword.” Nothing can get by that angel to be placed upon that altar unless it has the mark of your inner authority. Nothing passes . . . unless it be a part of the “fluid area of your consent.” This is your crucial link with the Eternal. [1]

. . . As I see it, the human task is threefold. First, the human spirit must connect to the Eternal by turning toward God’s immanence and ineffability with yearning. Second, each person must explore the inner reality of his or her humanity, facing unmet potential and catastrophic failure with unmitigated honesty and grace. Finally, each one of us must face the unlovable neighbor, the enemy outside of our embrace, and the shadow skulking in the recesses of our own hearts. Only then can we declare God’s perplexing and unlikely peace on earth. These tasks require a knowledge of self and others that only comes from the centering down that Thurman advocates. It is not an escape from the din of daily life; rather, it requires full entry into the fray but on different terms. . . . Always, contemplation requires attentiveness to the Spirit of God. . . .

Contemplation is a spiritual practice that has the potential to heal, instruct, and connect us to the source of our being. Thomas Keating describes the shift in reality structures that may occur during contemplative prayer in this way: “our private, self-made worlds come to an end; a new world appears within and around us and the impossible becomes an everyday experience.” [2]

Inspiration for this week’s banner image:  the word contemplation includes but does not require silence or solitude. instead, contemplative practices can be identified in public prayers, meditative dance movements, and musical cues that move . . . toward a communal listening and entry into communion with a living god. —barbara holmes, this year’s theme.

Healing With Every Inward Step

IMG_4426.JPG

Tonya Grieb, PsyD

Welcome to Inward Journeys Therapy! I'm excited to embark on this healing voyage together. I believe successful therapy happens in an open and non-judgmental space that combines evidence based practices, client-led perspective, and the 'here-and-now'. I specialize in mindfulness based parts and somatic trauma work for people who struggle with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, relationship issues, and PTSD. I work with adolescents through older adults and also offer couples and family therapy.

“Knowing oneself comes from attending with compassionate curiosity to what is happening within.”

A little about me..

I believe that all have the ability to heal. Whether that be from complex trauma, negative thought patterns, dysfunctional relationships, or anything else that life throws your way. Therapy is a helpful place to start this work. I work with adolescents to older adults in individual therapy, couples therapy, and family therapy. I work with people who have anxiety, depression, ADHD, personality disorders, which is rooted in trauma, eating disorders, and PTSD. I have trained in many different settings and have worked with a diverse patient population. From community mental health centers to college counseling to large hospitals, I have had an abundance of experience working with patients across the lifespan. I graduated with my PsyD in August 2023 and am currently pre-licensure and training under two psychologists in the Lakewood, CO area.

My goal as a therapist is to help you get to a place where you trust your inner voice and find a deeper and more peaceful sense of self. I work from an integrative perspective but my care is always person-centered and culturally sensitive. I use the following modalities and tailor each treatment to the client: IFS/parts-work, psychodynamic, CBT, interpersonal psychotherapy, Emotion Focused Couples therapy, and mindfulness. African Americans Forming A New Tribal Existence

Inward Journey, African American Council , a community of men and women in transition, a community with a vision of self-determination and direct action. To be in community means to be in change. Change is an inevitable event in life. Some change is destructive and some is constructive. We pride ourselves on embracing constructive/healing change. African Americans, we judge, suffer from a serious and deadly identity wound. Torn, as our ancestors were, from their homelands, communities, villages, and tribes; and forbidden to practice any tribal ventures for centuries, it is a miracle that we have a trace of sanity left. Even in modern times, our identity was often chosen for us. We have gone through being called darkies, niggers, niggres, colored, Negroes, black, and African American. None of us have totally agreed on an identity. Hence, we suffer the disconnectedness any tribal peoples who were banished from their ancestral homelands would suffer. Why is a name so important? Think of it like this. When you hear the name Zulu, Dogon, Dagara, Apache, or Sioux what images come to mind? The Zulu named themselves based on their collective cultural experiences and vision. A name for any peoples conveys Their Story, something Africans in America are critically lacking. Brothers and Sisters, what is the collective story and vision of Inward Journey? In the motherland, you have nations, communities, and villages, but at its core, you have The Tribe! So what are we as members of Inward Journey to call ourselves? How will we choose to identify ourselves? What name can we offer to the world that is self-identifying and that captures our very intent and purpose of being? Our proposition is simple, we, the sub-committee to redefine the concept of village, have created an acronym that encapsulates our very essence and being, The AAFANTE Tribe, meaning African Americans Forming A New Tribal Existence. The name is all-inclusive and descriptive while promoting our vision and, equally important, it describes a community in transition and action. Unlike the ethnic tribes of old that were exclusive, by necessity, The AAFANTE is inclusive of all peoples of African descent; The Lost Tribes, displaced during the African Diaspora. We believe it to be an honorable name well deserving of the sisters and brothers that we hope will embrace it and own it. We think The Ancestors will be pleased!

Hypnotherapy Practice

My practice image

First hypnotherapy session

For our first session we will need a bit more time to get to know each other. That's why the initial session takes two hours.

Regular hypnotherapy session

Once you have done your first session, following sessions normally last an hour and a half but we can book longer sessions if needed.

Before meeting Laura I had a completely misinformed understanding of hypnotherapy. It has been a very useful tool in learning to understand the more subconscious parts of myself and has helped me move forward in a time when I felt very stuck. Laura has a gentle and nurturing nature that immediately puts one at ease. I felt safe opening up to her in the sessions and always left knowing that all information shared would be kept confidential. Thank you Laura!   Cami, South Africa
In order to heal, we have to take a journey inside us and into our past, where usually, we refuse to go. Laura has a real gentle way in guiding you there, and help you encounter your path into your healing journey... She has an amazing gift, and I will keep seeing her so she can help me explore and understand this journey better...   Elena Da Cruz, Argentina
Laura is incredibly skilled in her craft and engages with a kind heart. She guided me through a discussion around a subject that has been the source of a lot of fear and anxiety for a couple of years and helped me to see a new perspective that was instantly empowering. I highly recommend a session with Laura to anyone who wants to explore ways to free themselves from old thought patterns.   Amy, USA
I had the privilege of working with Laura Vignoli last year during a particularly painful period in my life. I was coping with PTSD (post traumatic stress syndrome) brought on by the shock suicide of my life partner. Laura helped me clear a path to see more clearly the emotional blocks that were obstructing my ability to heal more and what was holding me back from my desire to write. Laura has a gift of deep insight, natural empathy and exceptional skills as a hypnotherapist. She gently talks you through the session, how the process works, what is required from you as a client and what to expect. Each time Laura took me to a deeper state of hypnosis I felt safe and cocooned. Her warm, encouraging voice, coupled to her loving kindness and innate skills allowed me to relax into the session and release my trauma. She helped me find myself again. I cannot recommend Laura too highly.   Trish, South Africa
Before going for a session with Laura, I had tried one session of hypnotherapy, and I could experience how helpful hypnotherapy was with a breaking up process that I was going through at the time. The session with Laura surprised me in a very positive way. She used a different technique of what I had experienced before (which was the best for that moment) called “parts therapy” which as I understand, it consists in getting in contact with the different parts of ourselves that pull in different directions but that aren’t obvious for our conscious mind. At the moment I was struggling with having the will to do the things that I wanted to do, and Laura helped me realise that there was a part of me that was getting a benefit from not doing what I really wanted, and therefore she guided me to be able to integrate the different parts inside of me so there wasn’t an inner struggle anymore. Laura has a innate ability to guide you through the subconscious mind in a really respectful way and help you realise what is the core of the issue that you are dealing with and gives you practical tools to empower you to solve the problem. I felt very safe with her and I encourage you to try this incredible experience with Laura!   Gabi, Uruguay
I came across Hypnotherapy after a self-hypnosis workshop where I learned about this technique. It gave me a powerful insight into how I could go beyond my analytical mind and rooted beliefs and fears. My sessions with Laura revealed this is a great way to combine meditation and self-reflection through the guide and support of a skilful practitioner. Laura’s mindful combination of traditional therapy tools and various hypnosis have been invaluable, allowing me to overcome challenges at work (unblocking my writing potential) and stay centred and clear through very emotional personal situations. I highly recommend Laura to anyone wishing to deal with a particular issue, or to have hypnotherapy as one of the many tools available to us to look after ourselves.   Diana, Colombia

Research on what's the hypnotic trance

This article explains that there's strong evidence showing that the hypnotic trance is a separate neurophysiological state. Research is still needed to identify all the potential uses for this special state of our mind.

What does hypnosis feel like?

This articles describes really well the typical experiences felt in a hypnotherapy session. Although is focused on addictions it applies to any other situation.

Roy Hunter interview

In this interview Roy Hunter talks about some of his experiences as a hypnotherapist using different techniques, including parts therapy and the use of the client's higher self part.

From Gen Alpha to boomers, we asked 6 therapists what each generation is talking about in therapy

  • Different generations love to complain about each other, but therapists say we're all struggling.
  • Younger generations grapple with identity, friendship, and forging their own path.
  • Older generations face challenges with parenting and balancing responsibilities.

Insider Today

Baby boomers inherited a thriving economy and ruined it for the rest of us. Millennials are anxious avocado-eaters who'll never own property, while Gen Zers are depressed snowflakes who take liberties at work. As for Gen X , hardly anyone even remembers they exist.

It's too soon to tell how Gen Alpha will be judged, but they practically came out of the womb watching TikTok and already use antiaging skincare products, so things aren't looking good.

Or so the stereotypes go.

So in the spirit of finding some common ground amid all the mud-slinging, BI asked six therapists what their clients from different generations commonly talk about in therapy. Topics include feeling inadequate, relationships, and difficulty navigating life transitions.

It turns out Gen Z are not the only ones struggling with their mental health . In 2022, nearly a quarter of US adults visited a psychologist, therapist, or psychiatrist, a Gallup poll found . That's a 10% rise since 2004.

The reasons aren't all bleak: There's less stigma around seeking treatment, particularly among younger people, and a greater emphasis on the importance of good mental health than in previous years, Gallup found. But the stress of the pandemic likely played a part, it said, and women, young adults, and people with lower household incomes were least likely to rate their mental health positively, the poll said.

No matter how old we are, we're all grappling with something, whether personally or collectively. International relations are tense , and it feels like we're constantly on the verge of entering a recession or seeing AI steal our jobs, not to mention the text bombs we're sending each other.

"Every generation is genuinely struggling to make meaning of what their life should look like at this time. What that looks like for different age groups is different," Israa Nasir, a psychotherapist based in New York and the author of the upcoming book " Toxic Positivity ," told Business Insider.

But every generation goes through the same life stages necessary to become a fully formed human, she said.

So while headlines and online trends will have you believing that Gen Z is from Venus while boomers are from Mars, we're probably more similar than we are different.

Generation Alpha

Members of Generation Alpha were born around 2010 and later. The oldest turn 14 this year, so they're very much still children.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , nearly one in five children have a mental, emotional, or behavioral disorder, with ADHD and anxiety being the most prevalent, but of those, only 20% receive mental health treatment. The CDC data is based on children aged between 3 and 17.

There's been a spike in children being diagnosed with ADHD since 2003, according to the CDC, and anxiety has also increased over time. Between 2016 and 2019, more than 9% of US children were diagnosed with anxiety.

Georgina Sturmer, a UK-based counselor registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, told BI that this age group was "hit hard by a perfect storm" — the COVID pandemic plunged the world into turmoil and uncertainty and separated them from their peers, she said.

In a more general sense, kids under 13 often stress most about things happening in their immediate environment — "often what is happening that day or that week," Amanda Macdonald, a UK-based BACP-registered therapist, told BI.

Parents typically have a large role in their children's lives at this age, and there is a push and pull between what is allowed, how things are done, and the child's desire for greater independence, she said. Gen Alpha are also forming friendships outside their family and independent of their parents or carers, and that's reflected in what kids worry about.

Thai Alonso, a clinical psychologist based in New Jersey, told BI that the most common concern among kids late in elementary school or middle school is conflict with their parents. Parents' expectations around their child's behavior and how they deal with emotions can cause clashes, she said.

Related stories

Among preschool-aged Gen Alphas, who are too young for one-to-one therapy, Alonso said she gets a lot of referrals for kids struggling with behavioral difficulties such as emotion regulation, anger, and ADHD.

Gen Zers are typically between 14 and 26 years old. Therapists said that identity, body image , and friendship issues are common concerns for this age group, and they often struggle with anxiety and low moods.

Younger Gen Zers who are in high school or college worry about social hierarchies and dynamics, such as who is "cool" and who is not, which can lead to angst and a sense of not being good enough, Jill Owen, a clinical psychologist in the UK, told BI. Clients often compare themselves to their peers, particularly when it comes to how "popular" or attractive they are. She believes the rise of social media over the past decade has made this worse.

"Younger Gen Z are developing their own sense of identity, with how they dress, speak, and spend their time, essentially what being 'them' means," Owen said. "With this sense of independence comes anxiety over becoming an adult, and an awareness of wider issues such as climate change and global injustices."

Diana Garcia, a therapist in Florida, works mainly with older Gen Zers between 18 and 26. "At this stage of life, they are starting to explore what's important for them, whether they have values similar to or different from those of their family of origin," she said. They're thinking about careers or at the start of that journey and that can create feelings of anxiety , she said.

Millennials

Like Gen Zers, millennials, who are in their late 20s to early 40s, also feel insecure because they compare the "perfect lives" they see on social media with their own, Owen said.

Many are also becoming parents for the first time or considering having children, which can bring up lots of different feelings.

Past generations weren't as aware of the extent to which parenting styles can impact a child's mental health. Social media made this information mainstream, and millennials think more about how their upbringing affected them emotionally and how they can avoid harming their kids, Israa Nasir said.

"I have observed a lot of motivation to look inward and begin to unpack childhood traumas in an effort to protect their own children," Alonso said.

Nasir has seen that as well. "People are actually just straight-up coming into therapy saying, 'I think I had a lot of emotional issues with my parents when I was younger,' or 'I need to deal with my issues with my parents,'" Nasir said.

Many millennials are also hitting traditional milestones like buying properties , getting married, and having kids later. Those who haven't fulfilled these societal expectations or simply chose a different path might come to therapy to discuss those pressures, Sturmer said.

Generation Xers are around 44 to 59 years old.

They have higher incomes than millennials, but many still have college debt to pay off or are paying it off on behalf of their kids. They also care for aging parents, have bigger families than millennials, and are expected to "step up" as community leaders, a 2019 Gallup analysis found. "It's a perfect storm of financial, emotional, and time-pressure stress," Gallup said.

Sturmer, who works primarily with women, said all these pressures, along with dealing with the emotional impact of menopause, take its toll mentally.

Many of her Gen X clients are also trying to help their children deal with mental-health challenges.

She said she sees "tired, overwhelmed, stressed parents who are doing their best to support their children to navigate mental-health services, while also coping with everything that's going on in their own lives."

Baby boomers are in their 60s and 70s. BI previously reported that boomers hold half of America's wealth , but it's not spread evenly among them. Many members of this generation are considered economically insecure and do not have enough savings for retirement and long-term care.

They're adjusting to a later stage of life, and some are fearful that as they age, they might start to lose their identity or feel a loss of direction.

"Retirement can bring with it a loss of identity, confidence, and sense of purpose. Empty-nest situations can have a similar impact," Owen said.

As people's kids grow up and start families of their own, it can provoke difficult feelings. "If we've always understood our role in terms of our job or our family life, then it makes sense that this might leave us struggling to understand who we are," Sturmer said.

"We often hear people joking about how lucky the boomers are — free university education, rising house prices — leaving us with a stereotypical image of a debt-free couple sailing off into retirement. But this isn't necessarily the reality," she said.

Welcome to Journeys Inward

Craniosacral therapy and integrative bodywork.

Our bodies are designed to continually gravitate towards a dynamic state of balance and ease, but sometimes through injury, illness, trauma or misuse we forget where home is, and the functioning of our body becomes compromised.  Perhaps you had an injury that didn’t quite heal or you have this nagging sense that something is off, but every doctor and test says you should be fine.  Perhaps you’re recovering from trauma and are uncertain how to resolve the myriad of symptoms, or stress is draining your vitality.  It is from this place that we begin to question how to regain our well-being.  It is here that your journey inward, towards a greater sense of wholeness begins.

Healing is the process of recognizing our own limitations and evolving through them. It is a remarkable journey that invites change, ignites courage and ultimately unburdens the soul so that we may move through the world with an ongoing sense of wholeness, and a deeper sense of purpose.  This process permeates the physical, mental and emotional aspects of our being, and provides the guidance for what is needed to rediscover balance, function and ease.

A labyrinth is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness. It combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. The Labyrinth represents a journey to our own center and back again out into the world.

mandala with lotus flower

The labyrinth and the “journey inward” are both symbols of the healing process.  The journey inward is about building awareness, listening to the stories of our body, and letting go of what no longer serves us. The center of the labyrinth represents arriving home to our authentic self, into this broader and deeper understanding of who we are.  It is from here that we shed our preconceived limitations of body and mind and learn to access our innate gifts and talents.

To complete the journey we must now walk back into the world.  The path is the same, but our perspective has changed.  We have changed.  This time, as we walk back into the world we bring with us a sense of presence and connection to our self, to others, and to the world around us.  And life begins in a whole new way.

Russia's Nuclear Deterrent Command Center Imperiled by Winter Freeze—Report

A Russian nuclear deterrent command center in Moscow has been imperiled by power outages that have impacted more than one-quarter of the region's cities amid freezing temperatures, a Russian Telegram channel has reported.

The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, reported that the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings—part of the Russian Space Forces, a branch of the country's Aerospace Forces—near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow is without power.

It serves as the space forces early warning network against potential ballistic missile attacks.

The development comes as Russians are reported to be suffering from power outages in their homes in the Moscow region caused by technical issues at plants amid subzero temperatures.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is about 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov and Naro-Fominsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky and Selyatino are also without power.

The Telegram channel said that at the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings, "the crew...is on duty around the clock."

"It is here that the decision on a retaliatory nuclear strike is executed," the channel said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment.

Power outages have also been reported in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, in the country's western Voronezh region, in the southwest city of Volgograd, and in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, a country that Russia has been at war with since February 24, 2022.

On Sunday, two shopping malls in St. Petersburg were forced to close because of problems with light and heating, reported local news outlet 78.ru. Hundreds of other homes in the city have had no electricity, water or heating for days amid temperatures of -25 C (-13 F).

Russian authorities have also been forced to compensate passengers of a train that ran from Samara to St. Petersburg (a 20-hour journey) without heating during -30 C (-22 F) temperatures. Videos circulating on social media showed carriage windows frozen over. A passenger also said the toilet didn't work during the trip because of frozen pipes.

NASA’s Juno Finds Jupiter’s Winds Penetrate in Cylindrical Layers

inward journeys

NASA’s Juno captured this view of Jupiter during the mission’s 54th close flyby of the giant planet on Sept. 7. The image was made with raw data from the JunoCam instrument that was processed to enhance details in cloud features and colors.

The finding offers deeper insights into the long-debated internal structure of the gas giant.

Gravity data collected by NASA’s Juno mission indicates Jupiter’s atmospheric winds penetrate the planet in a cylindrical manner, parallel to its spin axis. A paper on the findings was recently published in the journal Nature Astronomy .

The violent nature of Jupiter’s roiling atmosphere has long been a source of fascination for astronomers and planetary scientists, and Juno has had a ringside seat to the goings-on since it entered orbit in 2016 . During each of the spacecraft’s 55 to date, a suite of science instruments has peered below Jupiter’s turbulent cloud deck to uncover how the gas giant works from the inside out.

One way the Juno mission learns about the planet’s interior is via radio science. Using NASA’s Deep Space Network antennas, scientists track the spacecraft’s radio signal as Juno flies past Jupiter at speeds near 130,000 mph (209,000 kph), measuring tiny changes in its velocity – as small as 0.01 millimeter per second. Those changes are caused by variations in the planet’s gravity field, and by measuring them, the mission can essentially see into Jupiter’s atmosphere.

Such measurements have led to numerous discoveries, including the existence of a dilute core deep within Jupiter and the depth of the planet’s zones and belts , which extend from the cloud tops down approximately 1,860 miles (3,000 kilometers).

Doing the Math

To determine the location and cylindrical nature of the winds, the study’s authors applied a mathematical technique that models gravitational variations and surface elevations of rocky planets like Earth. At Jupiter, the technique can be used to accurately map winds at depth. Using the high-precision Juno data, the authors were able to generate a four-fold increase in the resolution over previous models created with data from NASA’s trailblazing Jovian explorers Voyager and Galileo.

inward journeys

This illustration depicts findings that Jupiter’s atmospheric winds penetrate the planet in a cylindrical manner and parallel to its spin axis. The most dominant jet recorded by NASA’s Juno is shown in the cutout: The jet is at 21 degrees north latitude at cloud level, but 1,800 miles (3,000 kilometers) below that, it’s at 13 degrees north latitude.

“We applied a constraining technique developed for sparse data sets on terrestrial planets to process the Juno data,” said Ryan Park, a Juno scientist and lead of the mission’s gravity science investigation from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “This is the first time such a technique has been applied to an outer planet.”

The measurements of the gravity field matched a two-decade-old model that determined Jupiter’s powerful east-west zonal flows extend from the cloud-level white and red zones and belts inward. But the measurements also revealed that rather than extending in every direction like a radiating sphere, the zonal flows go inward, cylindrically, and are oriented along the direction of Jupiter’s rotation axis. How Jupiter’s deep atmospheric winds are structured has been in debated since the 1970s, and the Juno mission has now settled the debate.

“All 40 gravity coefficients measured by Juno matched our previous calculations of what we expect the gravity field to be if the winds penetrate inward on cylinders,” said Yohai Kaspi of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, the study’s lead author and a Juno co-investigator. “When we realized all 40 numbers exactly match our calculations, it felt like winning the lottery.”

Along with bettering the current understanding of Jupiter’s internal structure and origin, the new gravity model application could be used to gain more insight into other planetary atmospheres.

Find out where Juno is right now with NASA’s interactive Eyes on the Solar System . With its blades stretching out some 66 feet (20 meters), the spacecraft is a dynamic engineering marvel, spinning to keep itself stable as it orbits Jupiter and flies by some of the planet’s moons. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech

Juno is currently in an extended mission. Along with flybys of Jupiter, the solar-powered spacecraft has completed a series of flybys of the planet’s icy moons Ganymede and Europa and is in the midst of several close flybys of Io. The Dec. 30 flyby of Io will be the closest to date, coming within about 930 miles (1,500 kilometers) of its volcano-festooned surface.

“As Juno’s journey progresses, we’re achieving scientific outcomes that truly define a new Jupiter and that likely are relevant for all giant planets, both within our solar system and beyond,” said Scott Bolton, the principal investigator of the Juno mission at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. “The resolution of the newly determined gravity field is remarkably similar to the accuracy we estimated 20 years ago. It is great to see such agreement between our prediction and our results.”

More About the Mission

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of Caltech in Pasadena, California, manages the Juno mission for the principal investigator, Scott J. Bolton, of the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. Juno is part of NASA’s New Frontiers Program, which is managed at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, for the agency’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Lockheed Martin Space in Denver built and operates the spacecraft.
