Accommodation in Yangon (Rangoon)

irrawaddy river cruise mandalay to yangon

Set in verdant gardens, the restored teak mansion of the Governor’s Residence dates back to the 1920s, capturing a by-gone era with its classic design, manicured lawns, and location in the desirable embassy district of Yangon.

As you’d expect from a Belmond hotel, the 45 rooms are spacious and tastefully appointed, with teak floors, earthy-toned silks and hand-carved furniture. Alternatively, you can choose from one the hotel’s three suites and benefit from a palatial amount of space and views of the private lotus garden.

The Governor’s Residence offers a range of dining options, from the Mandalay Restaurant, serving local cuisine, to aromatic curries at the Burmese Curry Table, and on balmy evening, you can sip a refreshing cocktail in the open-air Mindon Lounge.

irrawaddy river cruise mandalay to yangon

Overlooking Yangon’s famous Shwedagon Pagoda, The Savoy is a boutique hotel in an old colonial mansion, just ten minutes away from the city centre. Service is a stand-out feature, with enthusiastically helpful staff available 24 hours a day.

The rooms are very spacious, with wooden floors, polished wooden furnishings, and large windows; the suites have living areas, and are the best options for those staying for more than a couple of days, where the extra space will be appreciated. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in all rooms and suites.

The pool and adjacent lounge area make for great places to unwind away from the city bustle. You can dine at Kipling’s Restaurant, which serves a combination of western and regional cuisine, complimented by a view of Shwedagon Pagoda; there’s also a terrace, so you can make the most of the balmy evenings. Le Bistrot offers French food and is situated right next to the pool, affording guests a peaceful al fresco dining spot. For a more upbeat atmosphere, Captain’s Bar has live music on a weekly basis.

strand-hotel-yangon-myanmar-exterior

A relic of Myanmar ‘s colonial history dating back to 1901, The Strand played host to Rudyard Kipling during his journey through then-Burma, amongst many other famed writers and travellers.

Today, many things have changed – there’s Wi-Fi in all the rooms and the complimentary mini-bars are refreshed daily – but the hotel’s elegant charm and the first-rate, attentive service remain constant with butlers manning every floor 24-hours-a-day, each armed with an unfailingly sunny and helpful disposition.

The four suites types are spacious and airy, with teak wood floors, antiques to decorate, ceiling fans, and floor-to-ceiling windows. The hotel also features a spa, where travellers can go for a massage to ease away jetlag or perhaps to prepare for a long flight.

Guests can dine in the sophisticated Strand Grill, with its black-and-white marble floor, chandeliers, and local music accompanying the international cuisine. The Strand Cafe is a little more casual, and the breakfast menu offers a fantastic choice of cereals, pancakes and eggs, to name but a few options: we recommend the eggs benedict. Being an old colonial hotel, it’s no surprise that high tea is also on offer, later in the evening, you can join the local expats in the grand bar for a cold G&T.

Romancing The Irrawaddy – Mandalay to Yangon River Cruise

Updated September 2020

irrawaddy river cruise mandalay to yangon

A river cruise isn’t mandatory for a Myanmar itinerary. Most central Burmese attractions are easily accessed from Mandalay or Bagan by road or public ferry.

But there is something about a river cruise, about being adrift on an ancient body of water while witnessing life unfold along its banks that is immersive. We had experienced the magic on the Nile and the Irrawaddy, with its pagoda studded banks, was even more enchanting.

A boat cruise, unlike large ocean cruises, is about getting intimate with the land. Excursions began early, most times divided into two shifts interspersed with a leisurely lunch.

The Irrawaddy Explorer

The 52 people on board the Irrawaddy Explorer were divided into three manageable groups and the order of visits staggered so cruise mates didn’t bump into each other at every stop. The group excursions took some getting used to, after so many years of independent travel. But I soon became adept at avoiding inadvertent photo bombers and finding my own space during each visit.

It was remarkable how easy it was to fall into the slow rhythm of that schedule. Aided greatly by an extremely talented chef and bottomless tankards of beer.

That internet was practically non existent was actually a positive. We resolved to try to stick to the ‘early to bed, early to rise’ schedule when we returned, but that went out of the window as soon as we fully reconnected with the World Wide Web.

irrawaddy river cruise mandalay to yangon

Our (cruise) itinerary traced the evolution of Burmese history – and their royals’ penchant for building and abandoning capital cities – in reverse*. From Mandalay, the last capital where the monarchy met its ignominious end , all the way to the ancient Pyu city state of Sri Ksetra: the birthplace of the Tibeto Burman race, as well as the Bagan (Pagan) kingdom.

Mandalay felt like the Mumbai of Myanmar. Crowded and edgy. Its principal monument, King Thibaw’s famed Glass Palace, a newish reconstruction and currently occupied by the army.

The only major original structure from the complex to have survived Allied bombing during World War II, is the ornately carved Shwenandaw Pagoda, itself dismantled from Thibaw’s father’s palace in Amarapura and re-erected here for use as a monastery.

Kuthodaw Pagoda, Mandalay

The Mahamuni pagoda with its 13ft tall gold leaf encrusted Buddha and the Kuthodaw pagoda that holds the largest book in the world, are both important pilgrimage spots and great places for people watching.

It was a bit of a let down though to discover that the ‘book’, although impressive, was a series of large inscribed stone ‘pages’ in individual shrines and not the giant book I had envisaged.

Our rather packed first day ended spectacularly on a sampan in Amarapura, just in time to watch the sun slip behind Ubein bridge: the longest teak wood foot bridge in the world. I would have loved to have had the opportunity to walk across it at dawn.

We stopped a while at the Settawaya Paya (Stupa) on the edge of the riverbank on our stroll through the erstwhile royal residence of Mingun next morning, before continuing on to the circular Hsinbyume Paya.

I was half hoping to spot playful young novice monks cavorting over the wavy white terraces of the latter like I had seen in glossy photo spreads online. I discovered much later that those ‘professional’ galleries routinely use paid models!

Mingun, Myanmar

Mingun’s claim to fame is the enormous 18th century unfinished stupa – the Mingun Paya – that was meant to rival the Pyramids of Giza as the largest structure on the planet. It was abandoned when only one third complete, based on a prophesy – possibly concocted by ministers appalled at the extravagance – that its completion would lead to king Bodhawpaya’s demise. Then there is the Mingun bell. Also gigantic. And the remnants of what were once the formidable guardian dragon/lions (Chinte) of the gigantic Paya .

That afternoon, each couple was bundled into horse carts for a bone rattling convoy into Ava (Innwa), evocative of its 360 year imperial history. The key attractions here are the exquisite teak Bagaye monastery and the unusual (for the time), masonry monastery of Maha Aungmye Bonzan, commissioned, uncommonly again, by the queen.

Ava (Inwa), Myanmar

Over the ensuing week, we explored the Hpowindaung caves near Monywa with innumerable Buddhas in varying sizes and postures; the rather garish and Disneyfied (in 1939) but ever so popular 13CE Thanboddhay Pagoda with Buddhas in the thousands; the amazing stupa fields of Bagan (over two days) including a drive to Tan Kyi for panoramic views over the Bagan plains; colonial buildings and the intricately carved wooden Youqson Kyaung   Taw Gyi  (a replica of the Crown Prince house in Mandalay) in Salay ; the Mya Tha Lun pagoda in Magwe ;  the 5CE walls and gates of the UNESCO listed Pyu capital of Sri Ksetra , the ancient and unadorned Phayagyi : one of three earliest surviving stupas in the country, and in nearby Pyay the glittering Shwesandaw pagoda nearly as grand as the Shwedagon in Yangon.

Yes, a bit of a temple overload! Perhaps more than a bit. But there were delightful village walks, visits to markets and schools, topical lectures and cookery demonstrations (I won myself a beautiful Longyi for my skill in tossing tea leaf salad!) in between, to ward off pagoda fatigue.

And on this particular sailing, even an impromptu New Year’s Eve ‘beach’ party complete with fireworks!

Hpowindaung caves

The boat itself was lovely. The cabins surprisingly spacious and well appointed and with ample seating and enough power sockets to charge all our electronics and cameras at one go. The floor length and wall to wall glass windows through which we witnessed some brilliant sunrises right from our bed, was my favourite feature. As well as the comfortable sun deck, to which we decamped at every opportunity and from where we had our ringside view to the goings on around the river.

The exceptionally friendly and helpful staff deserve particular mention. Especially the sweet Mr Thong, who accompanied us on every excursion, handed out wipes to clean our feet at the end of every temple visit, and generally ensured our comfort and well being in the gentlest manner possible. Apart from Steven Stubblefield, the American cruise director, they were all young local Burmese, wholly dependent on tourism for their livelihoods. Their farewell message on our final night aboard, was a telling request to share the beauty of their country and of the beautiful river that bisects it. “We need your help, now more than ever.”

*The upstream itinerary from Yangon to Mandalay does it oldest capital first.

IRRAWADDY CRUISE DETAILS

DISCLAIMER – We availed generous press discounts for the cruise portion of our trip from Haimark Travel.  Update: The Irrawaddy Explorer is now being marketed by Ayravata Cruises .

Pandaw Cruises are the most reputed in Myanmar. We took the 9 day Treasures Of Golden Myanmar from Mandalay on the Irrawaddy Explorer with the Haimark group. The boat has since been taken over by Paukan Cruises .

We aren’t generally cruise people. I even go so far as to suggest not joining a Nile Cruise in Egypt for better utilisation of time and money . But with far less sightseeing on this journey we found the cruise a most enjoyable way to explore the sites all the way upto Pyay.

A cruise will, however, be far pricier than doing it on your own.

GETTING TO MANDALAY

By direct flight. Several international airlines fly direct to Mandalay at least a few times a week if not daily. We flew Bangkok Air with a stopover in Bangkok. Alternatively, fly into Yangon and then take domestic flights into Mandalay if not embarking from Yangon)

By train from Yangon: Trains take 16 – 18 hours.

By Bus from Yangon: JJ Express takes around 8 hours including comfort stops. Both day and night buses available.

Note: Schedules on this sector might remain disrupted until 2023 due to lines being modernised. Find more details at Seat 61.

Madhu, it’s clear that you saw much more of Myanmar than Bama and I did on our trip. The places you visited between Mandalay and Yangon sound so enticing – I imagine the Pyu capital did not attract the same number of crowds as Bagan and Inle Lake. As Bama mentioned, our lucky streak with the weather ended in Mandalay and we spent much of that time stuck indoors. It looks like we’ll have to embark on a similar river cruise the next time we go!

OH MY GOD what ambitious trip! I am BLOWN AWAY by these photos! I am TOTALLY Transported! I may need bug spray…

Delighted that you found my post so evocative Jasmine! Thank you for reading. Have a fabulous day! 🙂

Madhu…another marvelous post. I’m jealous you get to “avail” yourself of discounts on things like boat trips. I’m so glad you posted this, because I’m planning a trip to Myanmar next month and I thought ddoing a boat trip would be cool. I’m hoping there are shorter trips, and I’m also hoping I don’t have to take a tour. When I went down the Nile, I simply left the tour guide and wandered about the ruins on my own. Is the photo of the “radiant pagodas” of Bagan taken from Tan Kyi?

Thank you very much BF. Guess I got lucky 😉

No, the sunset view is from lvl four of Shwesandaw pagoda. I think the ban on climbing the pagoda has been repealed, but cross check your options with your hotel. Be warned, it is jam packed with sun worshippers usually. Any that isn’t might score on the atmosphere, but will not have quite the same view. (The reason my dawn photos do not have balloons soaring over the main cluster of pagodas. It was magical nevertheless.)

Did you WANT a photo with a balloon? I’m actually thinking of doing a balloon ride…but…are they like really expensive?

Radiant pagodas view is mind-blowing. How many are there? They kind of look like mushrooms after the rain. This is a different look of your page. (I have been away for too long), very different, but lovely.

Thanks Madhu. Always a joy to know about different places through your writings and images. I hadn’t ‘visited’ you in a while.. will try to catch up on all that I missed 🙂

Beautiful pictures!! We wanted to go on the cruise but it was summer and the water levels were too low. I’m glad to at least get a glimpse of what it may have been.

Life has gone a little nuts on me the last few weeks; otherwise I would have commented sooner on your lovely post. Can’t wait to see this fascinating country for myself!

As you always do, you transport me. Oh to be a anything small to sit on your shoulder. Madhu, this was a wonderful trip, beautiful pictures and has added to my already far to long bucket list.

Looks like a very nice trip Madhu. Burma has always been on my TTT list. One day. pagoda overload? Quite understandable. I suffer from chronic Aztec/Maya temple overload. 😉

Oh, wonderful, Madhu! The footbridge photo is especially strong to me. I wanted to be inside it, or maybe to eat it or something! 😉

Get me to that boat immediately! 🙂 🙂 The romance of it all has quite gone to my head and some of your images are so alluring. I’m teetering at the minute, Madhu. I’ve always gone to the Algarve without benefit of t’Internet, and I love the switch off from the world, but this time our new neighbours had Wifi and we had the use of it 😦 On the occasional evening at home it had it’s uses.

I have to go on a crusie some day but they are so expensive here ..

beautiful pics thank you for sharing

Beautiful images. Regarding the special nature of a river cruise. Between the calmness of the river, the changing scenery, and the views that we wouldn’t see from land, I’m with you on that thought.

You’re so lucky with the weather, Madhu! On our two-week stay in Myanmar, not a single day in Mandalay was a sunny day. It was always rainy and gloomy. I really wanted to visit Mingun Paya and Hsinbyume Paya (I didn’t know about the paid models!), but because of the weather we decided to save them for our future trip — as well as U Bein bridge. Glad to see those beautiful images of Mandalay and the surrounding regions, and well done for the tea leaf salad! 🙂

Yes, we really lucked out with weather. Dec/ Jan is probably the best time to visit Bama. Mingun and Ava were both beautiful. I regretted missing Sagaing. You can’t possibly do everything in one shot. As for the tea leaf salad contest, my delight was tempered by the fact that my only competitor hadn’t cooked before!:)

Wow, this is my first glimpse of Myanmar, through your eyes. I did not realize how beautiful it is.

Neither did I Mary Ann! Myanmar is unbelievably picturesque.

You visit stunning and legendary places: the Irrawaddy features in my imaginative map from childhood. And you write about them and photograph them so enticingly. Thank you for letting me be your virtual travelling companion.

I am grateful for the pleasure of your company Meg! And for your generous and lovely comments 🙂

Reads beautifully and takes me to the land, virtually. 🙂

What a lovely comment Amrita! Thank you very much for reading and for the share. Much appreciated 🙂

This is such a wonderful and exciting cruise, Madhu!

It most certainly was a wonderful journey through some truly beautiful parts of the country Niranjan.

How wonderful, Madhu, and Irrawaddy is my favourite river name, I fell in love with it as a kid, it’s so much fun to say. 🙂

Irrawaddy is indeed a special name. You should plan a trip then Ailsa. And perhaps pop into India along the way 🙂

Sounds like a wonderful experience, thanks for showing me some of the sights (I am unlikely to go myself, heat and humidity would be the problem)

Most welcome Sue. Dec/ Jan would be pleasant weather throughout. Perhaps even chilly around Inle Lake and the hills.

Did you feel that some of the country had the same feel as Thailand? Love those monuments.

I don’t know Thailand beyond Bangkok Ian, so I can’t really say. I am guessing the landscape is similar, but the flavour distinctly simpler, unhurried.

What a place. I never thought of doing a river cruise but that looks like a nice option. Did you feel like you had enough time on land each day?

We have only ever been on the Nile cruise before Jeff and loved it as well. The best thing about a river cruise is the minimal sailing time. They rarely ever sail at night.

Over all I thought the excursions were well planned. Bagan was the biggest destination en-route and we were docked there for three nights and two full days in which we managed a fair number of temples. Craft workshop visits were unavoidable, though most considered it a welcome break from the pagodas. On hindsight we should have explored one of the two days on our own. We were free to return at midday and after dinner if we wanted to.

Wonderful post Madhu. It brought back so many memories of our time there. I loved Myanmar – one of the highlights of our travels. Alison

Mine too Alison. I don’t think I have clicked as many photos any where else!

I’ve never been on a cruise. The ones on the ocean scare me. But your description of a river cruise sounds delightful. A leisurely-paced trip with a ride on a horsecart to boot. The sights along the way, with the culture and history included, are a real treat. Wonderful! 😉

I haven’t been on a regular cruise either Judy. I would be bored to death! 🙂 The only other time we were on a boat for longer than a day was on the four night Nile cruise. Both were equally enjoyable experiences.

Sounds like a wonderful time, Madhu. Thanks for sharing.

It was. Thank you for reading Janet. HAve a great week 🙂

I think even I could survive a cruise like that 🙂

I am not a regular cruise person either and was apprehensive about being stuck in a boat for nine days, so I am certain you would have more than survived this Gilly 🙂

It seems like floating down the Irrawaddy would be a perfect way to get into the flow of the culture as well ~ great photos, giving us a sense of what you saw and heard. Sigh…what a great country 🙂

Indeed. I can’t seem to get it out of my system! 🙂 Time and price are huge constraints, otherwise a cruise would be the best option. It slowed things down so we got to experience the villages and markets in a more unhurried manner than we would have on day trips.

I so wish one had even one river large enough to explore in comfort. Ours are all glorified streams.

I had no idea. Thought the Mississippi was a large river. The irrawaddy was shallow at parts, so navigating all the way to Yangon was an issue. We had to do the last stretch from Pyay by coach. The levels apparently rise dramatically soon after the monsoons. Must be an amazing sight, although not for those living on the banks.

A most amazing cruise Madhu. Loved the photography of the special stops that awaited you along the Irrawaddy cruise – from the culture and history, to the beautiful shots of the people.

Thank you Mary. The village visits were the highlights for me. Thought I would feature themt in another post since this was already image heavy.

Wow Lovely!

Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for reading Rondomtaliedraai! 🙂

A cruise may not be mandatory but it sure allowed you to see some beautiful sights.

You are right Colline, we got to experience rural Burma more intimately than if we had done day trips from Mandalay.

Tour Highlights

Itinerary details.

This 16-day tour aims to cover the highlights and essence of Myanmar, which is defined as an authentic experience by travelers. The itinerary is flexible and can be adjusted to meet your preferences.

Upon arrival, your guide and driver will greet you at the airport and drive you to your hotel. You will have the rest of the day to adjust to the jet lag or spend your free time wandering around your hotel.

Mandalay is the second-largest city in Myanmar. The Burmese deities and ethnic identities are fully expressed in this city.

Start your trip by visiting Kuthodaw Pagoda. The superb sight of hundreds of tablets clustered around a main pagoda explains why it deserves the name of being the world's largest book.

Soak up Mahagandayon Monastery's pious atmosphere by witnessing thousands of pious monks standing solemnly to receive their food.

After having lunch, head to the ancient city of Inwa to visit Inwa Palace and the Bagaya Monastery.

Paddle in the river, hold your breath, and be amazed by the sight of U Bein Bridge stretching its enchanting outline in the fading light of the day.

During your stay in a city of deities, why not join in with a holy ceremony? Get up early and follow the local devotees — you will see them take offerings to Mahamuni Buddha Temple and start a 1-hour face-washing ritual at 04:00./p>

You will arrive at Sagaing Jetty at about 10:00, ready to start your relaxing cruise on the scenic Irrawaddy River to Bagan. /p>

Have a short excursion to visit Yandabo Village along the way. Yandabo Village, where the Treaty of Yandabo was signed and the First Anglo-Burmese War ended, played an important role in history. You can learn some pottery handicraft skills from a local potter there. /p>

Stay overnight on the cruise ship, which will be moored near the tranquil Shwe Nann Tint.

You will have a short visit to a riverfront village before disembarking at Old Bagan Pier at about 09:00.

You will have a half-day visit to the Shwezigon Pagoda, which was constructed in 1060. It's the antecedent of a Burmese-style pagoda and the most recognized shrine in Nyaung-U. Before returning to your hotel, enjoy dinner at Nyaung U Market.

The stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bagan Archaeological Zone, is an ideal destination for every traveler. Hundreds and thousands of temples, stupas, and pagodas sprawl out solemnly and magnificently in the morning sunlight. As they sprawl out across 25 square kilometers, you will visit typical sites, such as the Ananda Temple, Dhammayangyi Temple, and the Mahabodhi Temple.

Your lunch will be at a local restaurant.

Conclude today's journey by taking an ox cart ride to see Bagan's splendor at dusk.

Depart Bagan with a 1½-hour drive. You will visit a scenic village with towering palm trees and get the chance to learn how the locals earn their living by scaling palm trees for juice and refining oil from peanuts and sesame seeds.

Head towards the mythical Mount Popa, which is home of the nats, 37 unsettled spirits. Nat worship is the third widely accepted religion in Myanmar, which holds the opinion that everything has its own spirit, and it predates Buddhism there. It's worth taking the 777 steps to reach Taung Kalat and get a bird's-eye view of numerous temples from the summit.

In the afternoon, you will be driven back to Bagan.

You will be transferred to Kalaw upon your arrival at Heho (the airport town near Inle Lake) by flight.

Check in to your hotel and wander around Kalaw as you wish.

Start your day by trekking along the Palaung people's trails to Ywa Thit Village. The idyllic scenery along the road makes this 9-kilometer trek very joyful.

Continue to trek and arrive at the Kalaw reservoir. Built in the 1920s, it's home to endangered birds. Rare birds including red-headed vultures, Mrs. Hume's pheasants, oriental pied hornbills, and sarus cranes can be found there.

Catch a rest on your way to Inle Lake by car, which takes 1½ hours.

A delightful visit to a local market, which is held every 5 days, will give you an overview of how the locals trade and live. You will never get bored at this bustling market, which has boats crossing the water and vendors selling exquisite handicrafts.

Move on to Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, the most important shrine for the locals.

You may be curious about the floating gardens and the skilled fishermen rowing their boats with one leg. As your boat cruises among narrow water lanes and past floating houses, you will learn about the ethnic cultures and traditions from your knowledgeable guide. The locals collect weeds from the depths of the lake to fertilize vegetables and fruits in their farmlands. The lake is their homeland, which they build and develop from generation to generation.

Discovering Indein Village is the highlight of the whole day.

The magnificent Indein Pagoda complex is hidden behind narrow and meandering waterways and riverbanks.

You will visit the famous Nyaung Ohak to see hundreds of brick pagodas. Take a walk to discover the Shwe Indein Pagoda where thousands of small stupas spring out at the lakeshore. Their moss-covered surfaces reveal their historical story. There's no need to control your heartbeat from such a big and pleasant surprise — just enjoy the moment and store this charming sight in your memory.

After lunch at a floating restaurant, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

You will arrive in Thandwe by flight and check in to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to do as you please.

Dress properly while sunbathing on the beach as a gesture of respect both to the Burmese and yourself.

Enjoy some sunshine at the beach in Ngapali and feel refreshed with a cool drink.

Say goodbye to the relaxing beach vacation and take your flight to Yangon. On your way to downtown Yangon, stop at Aung San Suu Kyi's house where she was under house arrest for 15 years.

After lunch and checking in at your hotel, a visit to U Thant House will help you learn about a former UN Secretary-General's life and story.

The Shwedagon Pagoda is the holiest place for local devotees and is also the landmark of Yangon. This gilded pagoda is studded with nearly 5,000 diamonds and some gems. When the sun is setting, the pagoda glitters in the dusk. It is a picturesque, sacred, and particularly soul-touching sight.

Jump onto a train at Yangon Circular Railway for an overview of this city. This journey takes about 3 hours even though it's only 45 kilometers long. Being seated among different commuters on their way to schools, offices, and marketplaces will give you a better idea about the local people's daily lives and you can learn why Yangon is more laid-back compared with other capital cities in Southeast Asia.

A museum is the best place to learn about a city quickly. You will learn more about this city by visiting the National Museum of Myanmar.

Bogyoke Aung San Market is in memory of General Aung San. You can buy a variety of jewelry, carved wood utensils, and specialties there.

If you want to witness how important the giant reclining Buddha is to local devotees, Chaukhtatgyi Paya is a must-see.

Your 16-day in-depth Myanmar tour has come to an end and your guide will transfer you to the airport for your onward flight back home. Thanks for traveling with Global Highlights and we hope to help you again soon.

Irrawaddy River

The 1,350-mile-long Irrawaddy (or Ayeyarwady) originates in the Himalayas at the confluence of two rivers in the northern reaches of Myanmar near India and China and winds south before emptying through a vast delta into the Andaman Sea; its main tributary is the Chindwin River. Classic 10- or 14-day Irrawaddy River itineraries travel between Yangon  on the southern coast and Mandalay in the central region while shorter versions ply the 110-mile stretch between Mandalay and Bagan, an ancient city carpeted in pagodas and temples. Most Irrawaddy cruises operate between August and April — with October through February the coolest (relatively speaking) and greenest period — and many lines are on hiatus from May to July when it’s extremely hot and dry and river levels are very low.

Monk Processions: Myanmar, a Buddhist country, is home to hundreds of thousands of monks. While some dedicate their entire lives to living in a monastery, most serve for only a short period of time as it is considered an auspicious and important thing for boys and men to do. Corteges of monks in burgundy or saffron robes, alms bowls in hand, are a common and beautiful sight.

Pagodas: They’re everywhere — but especially in the photogenic city of Bagan, where thousands of these distinctive structures, along with other Buddhist shrines and temples, decorate the landscape.

Buddhas:  White marble, green jade, wooden, and gilded, Myanmar’s Buddhas come in all shapes, styles, and sizes and can be admired all along the Irrawaddy.

Bagan: Hands down, this ancient city is the big star, thanks to its more than 2,000 towering temples, shrines, and pagodas, many dating from the 11th to 13th centuries.

Mandalay:  From Mandalay, you can explore many centuries-old former kingdoms and cities, including Ava (also known as Inwa) and Amarapura (once the country's capital), each with their own impressive monasteries, shrines, and sanctuaries.

Mingun:  Located just north of Mandalay, this port is all about the riverside Mingun Pagoda, a massive and intentionally incomplete stupa (a dome-shaped Buddhist shrine) dating back to the late 18th century.

The Souvenir Hawkers Are Relentless: Yes, they’re just trying to make a buck or two, but sometimes you just want to be left alone and not trailed to and from the main sights.

Irrawaddy River

The Irrawaddy River is your gateway to the mysterious lands of Myanmar, also known as Burma. Visiting Myanmar is almost like traveling back in time to the 1960s. There are cars, but they are old, and it's not unusual to see people traveling on a horse and carriage. This is a land lost in time, an aspect that makes for a truly memorable vacation. Featured below are a few of the unforgettable experiences to be enjoyed on a river cruise through Myanmar along the Irrawaddy River:

Buddhist Temple in Bangkok, Thailand

  • Sightsee in Yangon, Myanmar's cultural epicenter and largest city. Enjoy a guided tour of the city's highlights, including the 2,500-year-old Shwedagon Pagoda, often referred to as the Golden Pagoda.
  • Some Irrawaddy river cruises feature a couple days in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. This city is rich with colorful temples and pagodas, as well as skyscrapers. It is a wonderful mix of the old and the new.

Bagan Archaeological Museum, Myanmar

  • Visit the magnificent Mahamuni Pagoda near Mandalay. The temple houses a statue of the Buddha that is thought to be one of only five Buddha likenesses created while the Buddha was alive.
  • Tour the ancient city of Bagan where you will see more than 2,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries. Those 2,000 structures are all that remain from the 10,000 structures built from the 9th to the 13th centuries.

Sunset in Bagan, Myanmar

  • Explore some of the small villages located along the Irrawaddy, such as Yandabo or Magway. Tour the villages by foot and attend a workshop to learn how the locals make a living with their pottery, and then enjoy a traditional Burmese puppet show performed aboard your river ship.
  • Ascend Tan-Kyi-Taung Mountain (by car) for awe-inspiring views of Bagan, and then tour the teak Sale Monasteries with their intricate wood carvings.

See the best of Myanmar (Burma) with a river cruise along the Irrawaddy River, your pathway to mysterious lands full of beautiful monasteries, towering pagodas, quaint villages and unforgettable experiences. Contact our river cruise experts to start planning your Irrawaddy river cruise today.

River cruise from Mandalay to yangon

Just back from cruising down the Irrawaddy river on the princess panhwar...absolutely brilliant time. Visited lots of pagodas, village life and experienced the lovely welcoming Burmese peoples way of life before tourism spoils it. The boat and crew were splendid and nothing too much trouble, very friendly and would certainly recommend booking with APT again. What are you waiting for ? Book up your cruise now, you won't be disappointed!

We have just returned from an 11 day trip with Cruiseco starting in Mandalay and finishing in Yangon. All of the trips were very well organised (we were a group of 16) and our guides were excellent. We joined the cruise on Day 4 of the trip and ended up having 32 staff to 16 passengers! We stayed in a Deluxe Suite which was beautiful, a separate sitting area, one of the most comfortable beds I have slept in and a full bathroom including a jacuzzi. The crew on board could not have been better, Patrick was our guide who gave us a wonderful insight into the life of people on the river. Each day when you dock there is staff to great you leaving, giving you a little holder with a fresh cool bottle of water. The staff dug steps into the river bank to help people get up and there were always 10+ staff on hand on the way up the bank in case anyone needed a hand. The whole process was repeated on the way back on board and you were treated with a cold towel, your room key, a fresh juice and your shoes were cleaned! There was a daily cocktail hour from 6pm-7pm which Joe served to us all and during the deck if you were on board sat on the deck he would also come and offer a drink of your choice. Breakfast and lunch were buffets with a huge array of choice of Asian and Western food. The evening meal was a set menu with choices for each of the 5 courses, Australian wine was served at lunch and dinner as well as local beer. I can't recommend enough Cruiseco or Myanmar it is a fabulous country with genuine friendly people. Go now before it changes completely with tourism.

We spent two nights on the boat cruising down from Mandalay to Bagan with various stops in between. The boat is lovely and the staff were extremely helpful. The food on board was exceptional at all meals with a wide range of choices. This is a great way to see Burma and how life goes on around the River. With several interesting stops and excursions this was a real highlight of the trip.

irrawaddy river cruise mandalay to yangon

We cruised from Mandalay to Bagan along the Irrawaddy river. This boutique hotel on the river is beautifully furnished. We had one night aboard the vessel which included all meals and complimentary cocktails before dinner. the maximum number of passengers is 55 and these are looked after by 30 crew. After lunch we disembarked at Yandabo village to see pot making in progress

irrawaddy river cruise mandalay to yangon

We sailed from Hangon to Mandalay on the Pandaw ship Orient. A lovely boat that mirrors the luxury river ships in the Colonial times in the 1900s. Teak decks and panelling everywhere, along with brass fittings. With something like 2 dozen cabins, they were small but with slippers, robe and a small safe provided. The meals were varied and very good without always being excellent. The crew were perfect; attentive and very helpful in every way with nothing being to uch trouble for them. After excursions we were met at the gangplank with a refreshing drink and a wet flannel. All local drinks were included though not wines which were Norma (local) restaurant prices. Stopping each day at various villages for excursions, you could stretch your legs and get a feel for the country and how people live, though removing shoes at every Temple was a bit of a bind - though this is quite normal in Asia. Had a really great time, relaxing on teak sunbeds on the sun deck and visiting local sights. As this was part of a group tour I do not know what the cost was so no comment on value for money, but can certainly recommend the Pandaw boat.

This is a beautiful boat belonging to the Ayravata Cruise Company with only 18 cabins and a crew who could not have been more friendly. We cruised from Mandalay to Bagan and were sadly only on the boat for one night. This cruise ship has a delightful old fashioned flair to it but has every possible amenity. The cabins were spacious and the bathroom a masterpiece of maximum comfort in minimal room. The food served in the old fashioned dining room, was divine, some of the best I have had in Myanmar. In the evening the film The Lady was shown about Aung San Suu Kyi which was an excellent way to bring to those, who did not know much about Myanmar's history, a basic idea of what this country has been through. During the night the boat was moored and the following morning we arrived in Bagan. I could easily ahve spent several more days on this boat and on the Irrawaddy River

Rangoon to Mandalay Cruise ( 15 days / 14 nights)

RANGOON (YANGON)

Embark and sail up the Rangoon River and enter the Twante Canal, which connects the Yangon River with the Irrawaddy Delta . We stop on route at the Twante Town and explore city center.

If you’re only planning a short stop in the City, you’ll want to make the most of your time in Rangoon. With so many things to see and do, you’ll be hard pressed to explore everything the City has to offer, but there are some tourist attractions that wouldn’t want to miss.

The world-famous Shwedagon Pagoda is one of the most popular attractions in the City, and it’s easy to see why. Sometimes known as the Great Dagon Pagoda or the Golden Pagoda, the unique structure can be seen from almost every location in the City, and the golden roof of the Pagoda illuminates the skyline during dusk and throughout the night.

Attracting thousands of pilgrims from around the world every year, the Shwedagon Pagoda is estimated to date back at least 2,500 years. As well as being a revered holy temple, the Pagoda is a symbol of Rangoon (Yangon), and Myanmar as a whole.

If you fancy a spot of shopping in Rangoon, there are endless shops and stores to visit. Stretching over 200 square miles, there’s not much the City doesn’t have to offer. However, Bogyoke Aung San Marke t offers an unmistakable and authentic experience.

The bazaar features hundreds of stalls and stores, mainly offering antiques, jewellery, crafts, and clothing , as well as art galleries. Whilst the opportunity to pick up authentic souvenirs is enough to attract tourists, the colonial architecture and cobbled streets provide a fantastic experience of Rangoon in themselves.

MAUBIN AND NYAUNG DON

In morning we walk visit to Maubin bustling market and city surrounding area. Afternoon our exploration of Delta area NyaungDon city visit to see country lifestyle . Moor overnight at Zakagyi.

As you enter into Maubin you will come across a bridge. If you follow the signs to the Ta Lot Lat East Village you will come across the beautiful Maubin Beach. A sandbank on the side of the river, it’s perfect for those wanting a break from the bustling market. In the afternoon, the water recedes, allowing people to walk across to the opposite sandbank .

Maubin is not only famous for its rice fields, stilt houses , pagodas and bustling markets but it also has for project bridges. Khattiya Bridge, Maubin Bridge, Bo Myat Htun Bridge and Pantanaw River-Crossing Bridge are must-sees.

Located between Bokanbay Village, Maubin and Latyargyi Village, Khattiya Bridge is only 12 feet in length. Opened in 1997, it can carry an impressive 13 tons and is manufactured with a concrete bale iron frame.

DANABYU AND ZALON

Here we visit a number of teak monasteries including the Yout-saun-kyaung with its spectacular wood carvings; we also explore an area of splendid colonial-style houses; moor at the Tan-chi-taung mountain and ascend on foot or by WWII jeep for the spectacular sunset over Pagan.

In the morning, moor at the Tan-Chi-Taung mountain and enjoy the view. Continue with one of the highlights of your trip with a tour of a selection of the 3,000 listed monuments at this World Heritage Site, Pagan.

Located on the left bank of the Irrawaddy River, Pagan is roughly ninety miles from Mandalay. Those who are keen historians will know that Pagan is the iconic location of Mynamar. The old city was built in 849 CE and between the 11th and 13 century, this was the capital of the region. According to experts, Pagan was once the size of modern-day Mandalay!

During 1287, pagan was overrun with the Mongols. The terrifying tribe was active in the region during this period and Pagan was but one of their many conquests. The evidence of their impact on the location can still be seen to this day.

On our exciting expeditions, you will discover many of the secrets of this incredible location . Pagan was once a walled-off fortress with borders that stretched for over 2 miles. By many, it was viewed as a sacred city and it’s famously rich lands were the source of its strength through the ages.

One of the earliest structures that can be discovered and viewed on our cruises actually dates back to the turn of the tenth century. Despite being battered by earthquakes, it is still in remarkable condition.

You’ll find that many of the areas around Pagan have been given restorations to preserve their natural beauty and ensure that their stories live on.

Further exploration by coach of the monuments follow by a lacquerware workshop and visit to the local markets. Sail in the noon to upstream. Evening walk at Oh Ne Kyaung village to see the local life in this typical riverside community.

As well as being able to explore the remains of an ancient city , our expert guides can provide incredible details into everything that you may uncover through Pagan. You may also encounter researchers who are striving to root out more of the mysteries that still remain deeply buried here. Perhaps you could be the one to uncover a secret that has been lost in the sands of time?

We certainly encourage you to take a closer look at the shrines around Pagan . These are monuments to cultural deities, believed to have protected the land from disaster.

This small rural village is specialized in pot making. We visit the Pandaw School , built with past donations from Pandaw passengers.

MANDALAY, SAGAING AND AMARAPURA

Guests will take a tour of central Mandalay visiting the Mahamuni Pagoda and Shwe Nan Daw Kyaung teak carved monastery. In the afternoon we visit Sagaing. The true delight of Sagaing lies in its 1000 hermitages and sanctuaries, rich in woodcarving and religious art.

Next we explore the ancient capital of Amarapura by coach, take a boat ride along Taungthaman lake and watch the tranquillity and serenity of this beautiful lake and its famous U-Bein Bridge at sunset.

We stop at Mingun to see the largest working bell in the world and the unfinished pagoda which is the largest single mass of brick building in the world. We also visit the Mingun Old Peoples Home originally established with the assistance of the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company in the 1930s.

KYAUK MYOUNG

Sail upstream and visit the spectacular potteries near Kyauk-myoung where the famous 50 gallon water pots are handmade. We see all stages of manufacture from the throwing of the pots to the week-long firing in huge kilns . Afternoon sailing to Mandalay.

river geography

The Irrawaddy River, or locally the Ayeyarwady, flows north to south through the central heartland of the nation. Myanmar’s most important social and commercial waterway, meanders for some 1,350 miles (2,200 kms). Its name is believed to derive from the Sanskrit term airavati, meaning ‘Elephant River’. The Irrawaddy is formed by the confluence of the Nmai and Mali rivers. Both sources are in the remote mountains in northern Myanmar, around longitude 28° N. The eastern branch is the Nmai River, which flows from the Languela glacier on the border with Tibet. This river has the greatest volume of water, but is virtually unnavigable due to strong currents. The Mali River forms the western branch and despite a series of white water rapids, has some navigable sections.

Bhamo, about 150 miles (240kms) south of the confluence, is the northern limit for year-round navigation. Between the confluence and Bhamo, the width of the river during the low-water season varies between 400m to 800m. The depth of the main channel averages about 30 feet (9m). Read More
