Pula amphitheater.

Pula amphitheater– the biggest city and the center of the Istrian peninsula. The earliest mentioning of the city was in the 10 century BC when it was founded by an ancient tribe. The city was well known by the Greek travelers and sailors so it was also included in some Greek myths. The Romans have made the city strong in the 1st century and you will explore with us the vivid remains of that era. It is well known for the roman architecture and the most famous of them is Arena, one of the best preserved amphitheaters in the world, the several gates to the city ( Arch of the Sergii, gate of Hercules…) or the Temple of Augustus.

Rovinj ci ty was founded by the Istrian tribes. It was built on a small island close to the mainland and in the 18th was connected to it. It was ruled for 5 centuries by the Venice so both Italian and Croatian languages are official in the city. During this period the walls were built around the city and the remains are seen even today. Rovinj is a real gem and adored by tourists because in reality on every step you take you are forced to take another photo.

Poreč UNESCO heritage

Poreč the old town almost 2000 years old is most famous for its Euphrasian basilica, which is from 1997. on the UNESCO world heritage list. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Istria. You can still notice the roman influence and the architecture in the city. You will walk the main streets, still preserved in its original form.

Hum - smallest city

Hum – in this tour you can visit the smallest city in the world with just 30 citizens. A medieval city in the heart of Istria surrounded by beautiful nature will make you want to stay. The legend says that the giants built the city, but since it was built last from all the cities, there was not enough stones so they built the smallest city from the stones that remained.

Motovun – be the part of the route of Jason and the Argonauts and visit this gorgeous city on a green hilltop. In the city center you will be protected with the walls dating from the 11th century. Today, a popular touristic destination, mostly during the famous Motovun film festival attracts thousands of tourists.

Ljubljana is very nice city and Lake Bled was wonderful. We took the boat ride to the island in the middle of the lake. It was nice there. We pay 18 Euro per person round trip. The Chiron the island is nice. The castle by the lake is the best. The history of printing, the view is to die for and the Slovenian cake with layer of cream sold in the castle was amazing. Patrik, thank you for being a great tour guide for us. Read more Written April 12, 2024

From the moment he picked us us at our hotel; through our wonderful stop at Rastoke to the time spent at the Park itself; Steve was thoroughly entertaining. His knowledge of Croatia's history, geography and culture was amazing and we would urge anyone coming to Zagreb to schedule an extra day for this tour. You will not regret it! • yummymayo 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Tour! Antonio is the Duke of all tour guides! His enthusiasm and mastery of the history of both Croatia and Slovenia was unparalleled. He spoke with a loud and clear voice and always invited questions. He picked up my friend and I at 8:30, right on the dot, in front of the Metrological Clock. It was really just the two of us, as we did the tour during the off-season (Feb). Antonio did pick up two colleagues later, tour guides in training as I understood. Our first stop was in chilly Ljubljana, where he went through a bit of the history and pointed out some points of interest (including a delicious lunch spot), and we had a bit of time on our own to walk around. We felt that the amount of time was short, but still enough as it is a small city. From there we went to Bled Castle, which was the highlight for me. It was quite empty because of the season, and thus enjoyable to move about unencumbered. The honey tasting was great, but for me I almost cried when I went to the workshop to see a replica Gutenberg Press! Oleg (I think was his name) showed me how it works and I printed a little souvenir to bring home with me. Unfortunately when we went to the lake, there were no boats operating to take us to the little island. Instead he gave us a bit of free time to walk around. Not a lot to see, but it was relaxing nonetheless. We headed home and I was back in my AirBnB by about 18:00. Read more Written February 1, 2024
  • Ajoyrowan 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful part of the world Delighted we decided to this this trip from Zagreb, Ljubljana was just as gorgeous as I’d been told and lake bled in the snow was just magical. I do feel it was overpriced tho, we had to pay extra for boat to lake bled island and also into castle and lunch was not included either. Therefore €120 for the trip was expensive, tour guide was a lovely man and his tour of Ljubljana was good. Overall it was a highlight of my trip absolutely stunning part of the world Read more Written January 23, 2024

  • GlobeTrotting732806 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles food tour in Zagreb Our guide was amazing and spoke perfect English. She was an experienced traveller herself and was able to put Zagreb and its food in a wider historical setting. The food was excellent with good portions and came from resteraunts that specialised in typical Croatian food. It was all close to the daily Farmers market with food for sale on 3 floors. A fun tour. Be warned dont eat breakfast before this tour as we had to take some home in a doggy bag! Read more Written November 2, 2023

  • Wre2nxt 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A trip without borders!! Antonio was an excellent guide. Super knowledgeable about all things, such as history, politics, and great places to eat! Pick-up was easy, and drives were around 1.5 to 2 hours or so! Not too long! We were given a small orientation tour of Ljubljana and allowed free time to roam as we pleased after. As I said, Antonio knew great places for Klobasa, ice cream, and traditional foods. After we headed to Bled. The lake and church were great, as was our boat man taking us from main land to Bled church on the island! Then we visited Bled Castle where we had great vies, Bled cream cake & also wine tasting for a cheap price of €2. The only bad thing was the weather....other than that...worth the price and a great day out to another country. Read more Written October 24, 2023
  • nomadt88 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing experience from Zagreb I have personally visited Bled and Ljubljana before. but Ines made the trip fun and interesting. Talking about history and relationship between different nations, understanding of Slovenia map as a 'screaming chicken' :D. This trip was worth it even though I have visited these places before. It should be a must experience if youre visiting Zagreb. So close and easy to go to experience Slovenia in a day. Read more Written October 24, 2023

Nice drive through the country side of Slovenia with short visit of the capital city and nice trip to lake Bled. A bit overpriced for the short boat ride to the island that really does not offer much. The castle is worth the visit though. Read more Written October 23, 2023
  • Wre2nxt 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Tranquillity in a natural shade of turquoise I was collected on time in a central location. We were a small, personal group of 7, which is great as we all get to know each other and start bonding from the start! Our guide was named Luka, he was friendly and had lots of information regarding the sites we would visit. First up, we saw Rastoke Village. It is a tiny village made from wooden houses by a river, with less than 100 inhabitants!! Then off to the lakes! They were a marvellous bluey/green colour, and it was so rewarding to see them contrasted against lush, green, and brown greenery of the hills and mountains. There were some really nice waterfalls and a boat ride across to the second set of lakes. It is a fantastic, natural wonder and well worth the price! All in all, the day is long and slightly tiring, but a great choice. We were collected around 8am and got back around 8 pm! The tour company and of course, Luka made this a perfect outing. Thanks!! Going to Ljubljana was nice, very cute place with a river running through... had a fabulous meal at Sokol before heading up to Bled Lake. Once there, Enis arranged for us to take a boat (similar to a gondola) over to the island. Then went to the castle which overlooks the lake. Absolutely beautiful! Read more Written October 18, 2023

5 BEST DAY TOURS FROM ZAGREB

Which are the best day tours from Zagreb that we recommend for 2021? Being an agent in a travel agency that offers private tours from Zagreb we often get THE question: What to visit in Zagreb vicinity for just one day? Another situation is: We have booked a week in Zagreb, we explored the city, what can we do next? Our clients, we have to say, sometimes aren’t even aware of the excellent geographical position that Zagreb has. So many destinations that you can visit within a day, and for the majority of them you don’t even have to cross any borders.

Best day tours from Zagreb ranked by their popularity

Here are our choices of 5 best day tours from Zagreb listed by their popularity amongst our clients in the last few years:

1. Best day tours from Zagreb – Plitvice Lakes national park day tour from Zagreb

Plitvice lakes day tour from Zagreb

Plitvice Lakes waterfalls and lakes, national park, UNESCO heritage – Plitvice lakes day tour

Plitvice lakes national park takes first place on our list of best day tours from Zagreb. Plitvice are unique place that all the visitors of Croatia know even before coming to our little country. The images of this natural phenomena and UNESCO listed heritage have gone around the world and brought visitors. That’s exactly why Day tour to Plitvice Lakes national park is the first one on our list. The tour includes a visit to the national park, visit to Rastoke millers village, lunch or local food tasting and a coffee break at a scenic location.

Before you come to the park you can have a small intro in the magic you can expect. By visiting Rastoke miller’s village , a little village 30 minutes before the park, you can see in a smaller scale the power of water and the uniqueness of this area. The oldest mill dates back to the 17 th century and the other in the 19 th .

Plitvice Lakes was proclaimed a national park in 1949, making them the first national park in Croatia. The process of tufa formation, which results in the building of the tufa, or travertine, barriers and resulted in the creation of 16 lakes connected with stunning waterfalls.

You can book the Plitvice Lakes day tour from Zagreb anytime because the park is open all year round. It’s hard to decide weather the park is more beautiful with spring flowers blossoms, the green and turquoise colors of summer, the autumn palette of brown, yellow and red or the white calmness of winter…

2. Best day tours from Zagreb – Istria day tour from Zagreb

Best day tours from Zagreb to Istria, Pula and Arena

Amphitheater Arena in Pula – Istria day tour

Istria – the land of olive oil, excellent wines and truffles. This list is an understatement, but it’s very difficult to describe Istria and even harder to suggest what to do and see. The inland of Istria and the shores are so very different. Istria day tour from Zagreb covers 3 cities on our Istria tour and we try to explain along the way what to expect and adjust the tour to the client’s interests.

The Istrian people know tourist and they have the best way of presenting their richness to the visitors. On each step you can find fairs dedicated to protected original local products – truffles, olive oil, smoked ham, cheese, wines…

The Istrian inland is a hilly green bonanza – the green hills with old medieval cities are a real sight. It doesn’t matter if you look from the valley up towards the city or if you look down from the city – the sight is equally enchanting. The cities we usually visit are Hum or Motovun .

The cities on the shore on the other hand is all about tourism and the Roman heritage. Poreč, Rovinj and Pula are cities that we usually visit on this tour.

Poreč and it’s UNESCO listed Euphrasian basilica is a must see for all architecture, culture and history lovers. The basilica is full of mosaics, some even dating back to the 4 th century. Rovinj is the city that most of our clients prefer and the city of Pula surprises many. No one expects a monument like the Arena in such a small city. When we park the car right next to the best-preserved amphitheater in the world people just feel overwhelmed.

3. Best day tours from Zagreb – Slovenia day tour from Zagreb

Best day tours from Zagreb to Slovenia and Ljubljana city

Triple bridge in Ljubljana – Slovenia day tour

As we mentioned at the beginning, the great geographical position that Zagreb has, gives you the opportunity to explore not only Croatia, but also the neighboring countries. That is reason why we put Slovenia on our Best day tours from Zagreb list. Slovenia is one of them and you definitely shouldn’t miss it and that’s why Slovenia day tour from Zagreb has the 3rd place on our list. Slovenia is often referred to as the green star of Europe – one reason is that over 60% of the Slovenian territory is covered with forests.

Since our clients usually have only one day for Slovenia we try to cover as much as we can on our tour and that’s why we are one of the rare ones that offers 3 destinations covered in one day: Postojna cave, Bled lake and Ljubljana, the capital. When our clients asked, it was hard even for us to choose between the listed attractions so we decided to cover it all.

Postojna cave is the Queen of the Underworld as people call it. And it’s true. It is a paradise that drops of water formed throughout millions of years.

Lake Bled is a must see. No other reason is needed. This gorgeous Alpine lake will take your breath away. But not just the lake, the Bled island and the fortress too. We give all options to our clients but we tell them not to miss the view from the Bled fortress and do not miss to try Bled cream cake .

Ljubljana is the last stop before returning to Zagreb. The city of dragons as they call it is full of legends and stories. A few hours in the city gives you enough time to explore the cities famous center with the Dragon bridge, triple bridge, the Town hall and even to take a ride in the funicular all the way up to the Old city .

4. Varaždin & Trakošćan castle day tour from Zagreb

Trakošćan castle, Zagorje

Trakošćan castle and the park with a Lake surrounding it

We would call Castle Trakošćan and Varaždin day tour the most romantic tour from Zagreb and it includes a visit to Trakošćan castle and the city of Varaždin. The both destinations are romantic and magical, hidden behind the Ivanščica mountain in Zagorje.

The castle Trakošćan is a beautiful castle with romantic features. Although it was once a defensive fortress, the history gave the castle a romantic look, where it is a fairytale castle surrounded with lakes and enchanting forests.  Inside the castle is fully furnished with the original furniture.

On the way from the castle to the city of Varaždin there are other cool things to see and visit. One of them is the Gaveznica – Kameni vrh in Lepoglava, a fossil volcano formed around 22 million years ago. The volcano is called ‘fossil’ because it became covered in younger sediments soon after its creation. It reached the surface again in the Pliocene (around 2 million years ago).

Lepoglava lace, the UNESCO listed heritage, is another thing you shouldn’t miss on this route. The marvelous lace – beauty and enchantment, which is believed to have been introduced in Croatia by the Pauline Order.

Varaždin city , once the capital of Croatia, in the 2014 New York Times listed it in the 52 places to visit.

One does not have to walk around the center for long to be struck by the architecture and the prevalence of Baroque palaces, each with their own individual style, beauty and history. If you have a chance visit it in the time of Špancir fest, the most famous festival.

5. Zagorje region day tour from Zagreb

Zagorje region, wineyards

Zagorje rolling hills with wineries and castles

One of our clients that lived in Zagreb for several months and took a tour with us couldn’t understand that he lived in Zagreb and had no idea that just 45 minutes from Zagreb existed this undiscovered gem, a fairytale full of castles and history.

Zagorje day tour from Zagreb brings you further back in time. The locations we visit are:

Kumrovec – birthplace of Josip Broz Tito, the former Yugoslav president. The village is a museum in situ which means that all the houses that make it are in their original place. Each house tells its story about the customs and the way of life in the countryside.

Veliki Tabor castle – the best-preserved medieval castle in this part of Croatia stands proudly on the hilltop. The view from the castle is stunning but we have a secret. We will take you on a spot from which you will see the castle from above and it will seem like a real fairytale at hand – the slogan which describes the location best.

The third place is Krapina Neanderthal museum – the museum of evolution and Neanderthal findings. It is the largest site in Europe. The museum is linked to the actual site of the findings. The city has a long history and it’s, like the other cities in this area, full of history and legends.

These historical sites are surrounded with gorges nature, excellent food and even better wines. Do not miss this one.
