Jeddah is the perfect blend of old and modern. From the magnificent Old Jeddah, Al Balad district to the new five star luxury Jeddah Yact Club and Marinia , Jeddah has the best of both worlds. One of Jeddah’s most notable features is its close proximity to the Red Sea. The picturesque Jeddah Waterfront offers a great picnic spot where visitors can relax, enjoy the breathtaking views of the Red Sea and discover the famous Al Rahma mosque, otherwise known as the Floating Mosque. Jeddah is rightly referred to as the ‘Mermaid of the Red Sea’.

The motto of the city is ‘Jeddah is Different’. This is in line with the truly diverse and cosmopolitan nature of the city, which features spectacular events like the Formula 1 Grand Prix. Once you visit Jeddah, you get to truly appreciate the distinct vibe of the city. It is a lively and interesting destination that will offer you much to do. Its rich history and historical significance will make you want to spend more and more time here and revisit the famous Jeddah sign.

According to the Ministry of Hajj , Jeddah was founded as a small fishing village around 2500 years ago. The port city has held great significance not only due to commerce and trade but also due to the fact that during the period of Caliph Uthman bin Affan, it served as a port for pilgrims heading to Makkah to perform Hajj.

The city was fortified in the 16th century by the Turks. A stone wall was built to defend the city against the Portuguese. Since Jeddah remained under Ottoman rule until 1915, there is a strong Turkish influence visible in the city architecture.

The long seashore is one of the most prominent features of the city. Benefiting from this abundant seashore, the city of Jeddah built a 20 mile, three-part corniche. The New Jeddah Corniche offers breathtaking views of the Red Sea and also offers many recreational facilities that visitors can benefit from. Keeping in line with the motto ‘Jeddah is Different’, even the geography of the region offers a break from the endless sprawling desert of Saudi Arabia. The beauty of the Red Sea enchants visitors and beckons them to come back for more.

Jeddah is the 100th largest city in the world by land area. It is situated on a coastal plain in the lower Hijaz mountains. The climate of the city is classified as arid and it retains its warmth even in the colder months.

Cultural Life

The province of Makkah is a perfect blend of rich, centuries-old culture and traditions along with modern architecture and a lively way of life. You can find old souks as well as skyscrapers that are reaching for the clouds.

Visitors seeking old architecture will thoroughly enjoy visiting  Old Jeddah, Al Balad . You can get the feeling of travelling back in time by strolling through the narrow alleyways and soaking in the magnificently coloured Mashrabiat and Rawashaan. UNESCO added the historical Al Balad district to the list of World Heritage sites.

Being a multi-ethnic cosmopolitan city, Jeddah has a great traditional cuisine that takes its influence from various cultures. Fast food fans would be thrilled to know that the famous Albaik chain originated and is headquartered in Jeddah. You can also find hundreds of the best Restaurants in Jeddah on Welcome Saudi.

Popular Attractions

There is no shortage of things to do and sites to visit in Jeddah. If we start from museums, you can visit the Nassif House Museum and the Matbouli House Museum . The Jeddah fountain, also known as the King Fahd’s Fountain is a popular attraction. The jet of water rises to an incredible height of 853 feet. At night this stream of water is illuminated and offers an unforgettable sight.

New Jeddah Corniche and the Jeddah waterfront offer great spots where you can spend the entire day just soaking in the magnificent sights of the sea. There are numerous activities offered in these areas. Tourists can enjoy the fresh seafood and do some shopping. You can also take a look at the aquatic species that prowl the Red Sea in the purposefully designed Fakieh Aquarium. If you are looking for beautiful fine dining restaurants then you can try the Restaurants at Jeddah Yacht Club .

One of the most historical places in Jeddah is the Baab Makkah or Makkah Gate. This open-air market truly comes to life after sunset. You can catch a glimpse of the true essence of Jeddah city by strolling around these souks. The gate itself (Baab Makkah), is a great work of architecture and is a popular attraction for visitors. Whether you’re looking for history or enjoyment, you never run out of places to go in Jeddah.

The best things to do in Jeddah

By Nicola Chilton

Best things to do Jeddah Saudi Arabia

With its Red Sea coastline, cosmopolitan history, spectacular old town and fantastic food, Jeddah is a city that perfectly encapsulates the tapestry of life in Saudi Arabia . Whether you’re in town for a short getaway or a longer visit, here are 10 of the best things to do in Jeddah.

Al Balad

1. Go back in time in Al Balad

Jeddah’s old town of Al Balad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site , is beguiling, and one of the city’s main visitor draws. With many buildings up to 400 years old, the neighbourhood is undergoing a major restoration project to conserve the traditional architecture, including the distinctive ornate wooden roshan balconies. Visit during the daytime for the best photography opportunities, or in the evening when the area is at its most lively, the narrow streets filled with families out for a stroll, friends drinking coffee and shoppers heading to the souqs.

2. Savour some of Jeddah’s oldest restaurants

As one of the most multifaceted cities in Saudi Arabia, Jeddah is a wonderful foodie  destination, with so many culinary influences finding their way into the city’s cuisine. It’s also a great place to try some traditional restaurants, many of which are located around Al Balad. For seafood, head to Al Bassali, where they’ve been frying fish and prawns since 1949. The menu has expanded in the decades since, and you’ll now find grills and tajins too, but you can’t go wrong with the fried prawns, heated with the same secret mix of spices they’ve been using since day one, and even more delicious when dipped in tahini. Go after 4pm and you’ll also find people queuing up for hot-from-the-frier samosas and doughnuts. And try to save space for some masoub , a typically Jeddawi dessert made from bread, banana, honey and nuts that has Yemeni roots. Carnivores will love Naji Al-Harbi’s kebabs, a place that's been feeding hungry Al Balad residents since 1950, and for something more adventurous, Ba’issa is the place to try sheep’s head.

3. Discover Jeddah’s art-covered roundabouts

A vintage Mini Cooper on top of a flying carpet. A giant mosaic-covered octopus rising from roiling surf. A concrete block with cars poking out. Modigliani-esque metal sculptures of camels. These are just some of the roadside oddities to keep a lookout for as you drive around Jeddah. The city’s roundabouts are known for their artistic quirks, many dating back to the 1970s and 80s when there was a major push to incorporate public art into the urban landscape. Do a city-wide safari while hunting for them.

Jeddah Corniche

4. Stroll or cycle along the seafront Corniche

Jeddah’s seaside Corniche is a popular place for a stroll in the evening, with locals gathering for seafront walks towards the King Fahd fountain that shoots water more than 300 metres into the air. Or pick up a rental bicycle in the section of the North Corniche between the Shangri-La and Sheraton Hotels and ride down the street’s pedestrianised centre.

5. Shopping, from souks to malls to concept stores

Jeddah provides ample opportunities to pick up fabrics and leather sandals, and the souks around Al Balad have a vast array of both, alongside spices, sweets and fragrances. If you’re in the market for an abaya or kaftan, Serafi Mega Mall is jammed with shops selling seasonal and traditional styles at very affordable prices, ranging from the conservative to the colourful. To see where the city’s style crowd shops, head to one of Jeddah’s concept stores, such as Homegrown Market in the Ar-Rawdah district, where you’ll find more than 150 brands offering fashion, accessories and homeware. Also in Ar-Rawdah, multi-brand streetwear store Crowdless is the place for athleisure and sneaker finds. It’s also right next to the hugely popular Adani Bar, a contemporary cafe serving Yemeni spiced tea. Sit down for a cup, and order a tuna, tomato and caper toastie or a melted cheese sandwich filled with blueberry jam.

6. Head to the Jeddah Yacht Club and Marina for an al fresco dinner

Near Jeddah’s floating mosque and the Formula 1 track, Jeddah Yacht Club is home to a growing community of yachties, as well as several outdoor restaurants that make for lovely al fresco dining spots in good weather. Le Comptoir de Nicole’s flavours are straight out of Nice, with dishes such as: Provençal pissaladière with stewed onions, olives and anchovies; buttery sole meunière ; and, a truffle mafaldine pasta that’s so good you won’t want to share. Over at Mashi no Mashi, the Japanese menu features Wagyu gyoza and sliders alongside substantial slurpable ramen bowls. And at Madeo, Italian favourites such as lobster spaghetti and porcini pizza are accompanied by excellent craft mocktails.

7. Snorkelling and diving in the Red Sea waters

With its Red Sea location and year-round warm waters, Jeddah provides an enviable opportunity to explore the underwater world that lies offshore. There are a number of Jeddah-based operators who can arrange dive trips, and many hotels can also organise snorkelling excursions. Turtles, sharks, and a huge variety of fish inhabit the waters here, as well as hard and soft corals and, for expert divers, shipwrecks.

8. Head to Hayy Jameel for art, cinema and community theatre

A sister to Dubai ’s Jameel Arts Centre, Hayy Jameel opened in Jeddah in 2021 and offers dynamic arts and culture-based programming throughout the year. With a strong community vibe and spaces that encourage socialising and the sharing of ideas, Hayy Jameel draws visitors with art exhibitions and education spaces, a cinema showcasing Saudi, Arab and international feature films, shorts and documentaries, as well as the first community theatre in Saudi Arabia. There’s also a cafe, concept store and a baking academy, alongside occasional pop-up farmers’ markets.

Fountains at Park Hyatt Jeddah

9. Treat yourself to a spa day at the Park Hyatt Jeddah

Sitting right next to the water on the Corniche, the Park Hyatt Jeddah is the place to head when you want a break from the city. The spa facilities here – separate for men and women – offer relaxing and restorative treatments, along with extensive wet facilities and powerful underwater jets in the aquamedic pools which pummel aching muscles and are great prep for a massage. But the real highlight here is the large outdoor pool exclusively reserved for women. Surrounded by shade-giving palm trees and a row of sunbeds, spend a couple of hours here and you’ll feel wonderfully recharged and ready to get back out into the city again.

10. Join a cool crowd for coffee at City Yard

Centred around the Shirvan City Yard Hotel, a minimalist style haven that combines traditional Saudi design elements with contemporary colour schemes and textures, the City Yard neighbourhood is the place to come to hang with a cool, young Jeddawi crowd. Head to Meraki Artisan where a passionate team makes specialty coffee, best served with their deliciously tempting chocolate shots. To continue your sweet fix, right around the corner is L’Eclair de Génie for eclairs that are works of art, in flavours including salted caramel, pistachio and passion fruit with berries. And before you leave, stop by Musa and Palm to pick up dates stuffed with unusual flavour combinations like peanut butter and apple, and goat cheese and cherry tomato, all wrapped in beautiful packaging.

Jeddah ( Arabic : جدّة, also spelled Jiddah ) is on the Red Sea in western Saudi Arabia . It is the kingdom's second largest city, with a population of approximately 3,400,000, and a major commercial center in the country. Jeddah is also the main entry point, either by air or sea, for pilgrims making the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina , the two most sacred cities of Islam. Both are a few hours inland from Jeddah.

The historic Jeddah has been inscribed to the World Heritage list since 2014.

Culturally, Jeddah is generally regarded as being slightly more liberal than the capital Riyadh .

Understand [ edit ]

jeddah tourist information

Jeddah has been a port and trading city for centuries, which is reflected in its cosmopolitan mix of inhabitants. Today, it is a major commercial center in Saudi Arabia. It also has many government offices. Jeddah is known in the kingdom for its shopping districts, restaurants and cafes. It also hosts the Jeddah Corniche (waterfront area), which is the largest in the Kingdom with a great bunch of hotels, beaches and resorts clustered around it.

To the north of the city, a string of beach resort compounds are off-limits to the mutawwa (religious police) and are known as party spots where many of the social mores of the rest of the country are flouted, especially by rich, liberal families from Jeddah.

Climate [ edit ]

The climate is dry and hot. The best time to visit is on January and February, when it is the least hot.

The sea water becomes quite hot from July to October.

Orientation [ edit ]

Jeddah is a huge city that sprawls along the coast of the Red Sea, connected together by the Corniche , a seaside avenue full of bizarre sculptures and nearly 30 km long. The old city or al-Balad , on the southern side of modern Jeddah, is a crumbling but fascinating warren of multi-story houses made from coral. The main thoroughfare Medina Road starts from the northern side of al-Balad and runs all the way to the city.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ], south terminal [ edit ].

  • Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) . All Saudi airlines use this facility, including domestic services. Nas Air , a privately-owned Saudi low-cost carrier, also operates domestic and some international flights to and from this terminal. Air France , Korean Air , and Kenya Airways , being part of the SkyTeam alliance along with Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) , also operate flights to and from this terminal.

North terminal [ edit ]

Used by all other international flights.

  • Pakistan International Airlines has flights from all major cities of Pakistan to and from Jeddah.

Hajj terminals [ edit ]

There are also two special terminals, used exclusively for Hajj pilgrims heading directly to Mecca , which are basically enormous tents of fiberglass fabric on reinforced concrete poles and steel cables. Driving to the normal non-Hajj terminal, you pass between the two. In season, this lets you admire long rows of large aircraft parked alongside the Hajj terminals.

Connections to the city [ edit ]

A taxi to the city from either will cost around SR50, so agree on the fare before you set off.

By bus [ edit ]

National bus company SAPTCO [dead link] runs buses from almost all cities and larger towns to Jeddah as well as from a number of international destinations such as Amman and Cairo . However, make sure before booking your seat that you don't have a "by air only" entry visa. Several smaller companies runs long-distance buses too. While there are plenty of "VIP" buses with comfortable seats, journey times are grueling. Travel time from for example Amman is up to 18 hours.

  • 21.4821 39.1808 2 SAPTCO bus station . The main bus station. ( updated Apr 2021 )

By ferry [ edit ]

Jeddah is one of the major ports along the Red Sea and cargo ships arrive here from all over the world with plenty of choices for travellers, too. Al-Blagha is one of the largest shipping companies and operates several ferry routes, most notable a once-weekly service from Port Suez taking 42 hours (1st/2nd/3rd class SR845/695/395, car from SR850). There's also a service from Suakin, 50 km south of Port Sudan , three times a week with journey time of 10 hours (1st/2nd/3rd SR470/370/300, car from SR460). A more irregular ferry service is available from Al Hudayda in Yemen .

Ferries fill up quick during high season, meaning Hajj and Ramadan, so book early.

By train [ edit ]

A high-speed railway linking Jeddah with Mecca and Medina via King Abdullah Economic City opened in 2018. These trains also serve Jeddah (Naseem) and King Abdulaziz International Airport.

  • 21.517337 39.246457 3 Jeddah railway station ( Southeast of the city centre ). ( updated Mar 2022 )

Get around [ edit ]

Map

By taxi [ edit ]

Many of the hotels chains have a "water taxi" or a small minivan that will take you to the mall and main shopping areas. Taxis are very inexpensive, with most 10-minute rides costing about SR10-20. There are two types of taxis: one is yellow and will have a sign that says, simply, TAXI. They are usually cheaper, but a little "rougher" on the inside and out and usually are not air conditioned. But they are very rare in Jeddah now. Also, most of them are now air-conditioned new cars. If you're looking for better quality, opt for the white "Limousine" taxis which are of better quality. There is a rule in KSA that a Limousine must not be older than 5 years. So, you find all the new cars in Limousines. Limousine taxis are about $1–3 more expensive. There are also "unlicensed" taxis, which are normal cars (usually a Toyota Camry) without the "TAXI" sign. Those taxis are cheaper than "Limousines" but are not legal. Police take strict actions against such taxis, so to avoid them. Normally they honk or flash lights when they see you standing in street (you can't recognize them as they're normal cars).

It can be cheaper to negotiate a fixed price than to use the meter. This requires some experience with Jeddah and its streets. Sometimes, a taxi driver will pretend to be "lost" as a pretext to turn on the meter or make you pay extra in exchange for his "lost time". Whatever the situation, never consent to pay more than the price you agreed on before the beginning of the ride. Also, some Saudi drivers ask for a higher price and don't treat clients very well, so look for Indian or Pakistani drivers.

Many rental agencies like Avis or Budget will rent you a 2008 mid-size car for the price of SR100-140 per day. You'll also find a bargain when it comes to fuel, as Saudi Arabia has some of the cheapest petrol prices in the world. The streets are wide and signs are written in both Arabic and English. Look for maps in the libraries or big supermarkets.

Buses are not a commonly-used means of transportation in Jeddah even though you can ride one for SR1-2 from certain main streets to Albalad (downtown). It is, however, a very interesting way to enjoy traditional Arab music and the sound of people mixing together all while enjoying sights during the ride. Smaller buses are mostly private so the owner is responsible for cleanliness. Larger buses are provided by the government, which are big and clean but don't follow a schedule, so consider using the smaller buses if you're on a specific timetable.

By boat [ edit ]

Boats are not particularly a means of transportation, but rather a way to enjoy the views of the Red Sea. You can catch boats in Obhur north of Jeddah at the marina; a one hour ride in a small boat is around SR200 (US$55).

Al-Balad (Old Town) [ edit ]

  • 21.543486 39.172989 1 Souq al-Alawi . At the heart of the old city, coral houses line both sides of this busy market street. A photography permit is theoretically necessary (inquire at the office behind Naseef house), but in practice nobody seems to bat an eyelid as long as you don't stick your camera in people's faces without permission.

Museums [ edit ]

Other [ edit ].

The Jeddah Corniche offers spectacular views of the Red Sea. Check out the main shopping street on Tahliya for interesting wares, and if you're looking for good quality gold, try the Gold Souq where you can bargain for 18k and 24k gold by weight. The King Fahd Fountain is not only the tallest water fountain in Jeddah, but also the world.

Do [ edit ]

  • 21.634 39.103 1 Grand Prix or Formula One and other motor races are hosted at the Ash Shati track, north of the city near the airport. The next F1 event is 7-9 March 2024 so you need to factor in the start of Ramadan on 10 March. The Jeddah F1 at 6175 m is the longest street race in the calendar.

Scuba diving [ edit ]

Scuba diving is a major draw for expats in the Kingdom, although the Saudis themselves seem oblivious to the treasures that await offshore.

Because of Jeddah's location on the Red Sea, the flora and fauna are quite similar to what you'd see on Egypt 's Red Sea Coast or off the Sinai Peninsula, only minus all the tourists.

Visibility can be spectacular (30-40m is common) and the corals are virtually untouched. There are plenty of interesting sites to explore like the Chicken Wreck , a boat carrying tons of frozen chicken that hit the reef and sunk at a depth of 10-18m. Most of the better dive sites are around one hour out to sea by speed boat.

The Red Sea gets chilly in the winter, with water temperatures dropping to 22°C, so you'll want to use a 5 mm wetsuit with hood. In summer, temperatures climb up to a much more balmy 29°C, and 3mm shorty or 1 mm diveskin is plenty.

Parks [ edit ]

  • 21.625331 39.104399 4 Water park at Sail Island . A good spot, especially for families, when the blazing Saudi Arabian sun becomes too much to bear. The park was built on an artificial peninsula and is covered by several sail-like tents, which offer shade while you enjoy the pool and recreation facilities.
  • 21.61806 39.108181 5 Atallah Happy Land Park , 6263 Al Kurnaysh Rd ( Jeddah Corniche ), ☏ +966 12 699 1189 . 5PM . An amusement park with indoor and outdoor rides and attractions, ice skating and bowling, dining and shopping, 6D theatre and live shows. SR25 .

Work [ edit ]

There are many places to find work in Jeddah and jobs are plentiful, but unemployment among Saudi nationals remains high, especially among the youth population. One must obtain a visa to work in Saudi Arabia and the complicated process can only begin with a sponsorship from a company or individual already located in the Kingdom. Western expats cannot simply arrive in Saudi Arabia and then look for employment, and Western women will experience great challenges in finding employment.

Buy [ edit ]

There are a number of shopping malls in Jeddah.

  • 21.61444 39.15314 1 Hera'a Mall , Madina St .
  • 21.57297 39.12816 4 Star's Avenue . One of the newest malls on Al-Malek Road, featuring a Saks Fifth Avenue.

Eat [ edit ]

Jeddah is full of restaurants with almost every cuisine imaginable and eating out is part of the city's culture. Some of the restaurants have separate sections for single men and for families. Dating is theoretically forbidden but widely practiced, and most restaurants will allow a couple into the family section without question. All businesses close for prayer for about half an hour at noon and at sunset. They close again an hour after sunset for about 45 minutes. If you like to eat early, you can often stay in a restaurant during prayer time. Saudis tend to eat late, well after the evening prayer.

The standard cheap meal is the shawarma - giant layers of beef or chicken turning on a vertical spit. Thin slices are cut off and served with vegetables, garlic, and sauce in pita bread. You can also find a few falafel shops or eat at boofias (cornershops). Another thing that is very cheap is Homus, which is the paste of white chickpeas mixed with olive oil, and is very tasty. Try the Filipino Souk near Saudia City. Ask for the Pakistani area Kababish. There's a group of shops and restaurants with very low prices. Most of the American Fast Food franchises can be found in Jeddah, including McDonald's, Applebee's, Subway, and numerous others.

Stay safe [ edit ]

While not as strict as Riyadh, it is recommended that you follow the various safety tips in Saudi Arabia article to stay out of trouble.

Perhaps the biggest danger you'll face is the extreme, scorching heat. Temperatures can reach as high as 52 °C (126 °F) in the summers. Be sure to hydrate often and wear appropriate clothing to deal with the heat.

Natural disasters [ edit ]

Floods are not unusual in Jeddah, and they can be both violent and destructive, mainly because the city lacks the necessary infrastructure to protect itself against floods.

Refer to the various tips in the Flash floods article if the city experiences flooding.

Connect [ edit ]

Most shopping malls have Internet cafes. Coffee places such as Costa Coffee, StarBucks Coffee, Barnies, Second Cup and many more provide WiFi access to customers.

And guess what?

It is also where lots of people head off to Mecca .

I am going to show you the 30 coolest places in Jeddah .

It is like Jeddah has one foot in the past and the other in the future, which is neat.

Grab your sneakers, and let us start exploring.

I cannot wait to share why Jeddah should be on your travel list!

Dive into the heart of Jeddah’s history at Al-Balad, the city’s old town, renowned for its traditional coral-block architecture and bustling souks.

Al Balad

My trip to Jeddah’s old quarter, Al Balad , was quite the experience!

My friends and I were keen to check it out, but finding a guide took much work.

So, we just jumped in a taxi and decided to wing it.

Our first day there was a bummer.

We ended up in shabby parts and did not need to figure out where the good stuff was.

However, hey, we are not the type to give up easily.

We returned the next day with some advice from locals and, wow, what a difference!

We stumbled upon these beautiful old streets and buildings that had been done up.

It was a shame the museums were shut, but just walking around and soaking in the atmosphere was awesome.

There is something cool about Al Balad.

It is like stepping back in time – the place has been around since the 7th century!

Finding a parking spot was a mission, but everything was just a stroll away once we did.

Sure, the area has much construction, with scaffolding everywhere, but you can tell it will be amazing when it is all done.

Al Balad might not be your typical picture-perfect spot, but it has its own charm.

Our guide was not much help, but we still loved the vibe of this old town.

It is a place to visit, especially if you are heading to the incredible Al Ula!

Red Sea Mall

It is a premier shopping destination that blends luxury retail with entertainment options, making it a must-visit for shopping enthusiasts.

Red Sea Mall

I had a blast at the Red Sea Mall in Jeddah!

It is a shopping heaven with all the big brands, and the food is amazing.

The place is huge, but it is super clean and never feels too crowded.

Staying open till 1 am is a big plus – I love that I can shop late into the night.

It is also near the seafront, so getting there is a breeze.

They have a massive food court with all kinds of food, a cinema, and a play area for kids.

This mall has everything, whether hanging out with family, meeting friends, or just chilling by yourself.

Just a heads up – it is easy to get turned around because it is so big, so remember where you came in.

If you are in Jeddah, you must check out the Red Sea Mall!

King Fahd’s Fountain

Witness the world’s tallest fountain, King Fahd’s Fountain, an iconic landmark of Jeddah that spectacularly jets water up to 260 meters high.

King Fahd’s Fountain

You have got to check out the fountain in Jeddah at night!

It is a cool sight with all the lights – perfect for some great photos.

The fountain lights up only in the evening, which is worth watching.

The place is super clean and great for a chilled-out walk.

Sure, it gets crowded, but the sunset views are amazing.

It is a hit with families, too, with playgrounds and restaurants nearby.

It is especially nice in the winter months when it is not so humid.

Stroll along the Jeddah Corniche, a picturesque waterfront promenade offering stunning Red Sea views, recreational areas, and art installations.

Jeddah Corniche

I loved my evening walks in Jeddah Corniche.

The waterfront is just perfect for a chilled-out stroll.

It is clean and always buzzing with families and locals enjoying the cool sea breeze.

My favorite part was grabbing a coffee or a quick bite while watching the stunning sunset.

The place comes to life in the evenings.

Whether you are into jogging, biking, or just sitting back and relaxing, it has something for everyone.

There are many coffee shops and restaurants, so it is a great spot to hang out, especially if you have kids.

The walkways along the coast are just lovely.

They are well-maintained and offer some beautiful views of the sea.

It is especially nice when it is not too hot in the late afternoon or evening.

In winter, it is even more peaceful and pretty.

Just a heads-up for the ladies – make sure to dress modestly.

Moreover, you are in for a treat if you visit with family.

The area has been recently spruced up, and it is really impressive.

It is worth checking out when you are in Jeddah.

Al Rahma Mosque

Al Rahma Mosque, floating over the Red Sea, is an architectural marvel and a serene place for reflection and worship.

Al Rahma Mosque

I had the chance to see the floating mosque at the Jeddah Corniche, and wow, it is incredible, especially during sunset!

The way the sun dips into the sea, with the mosque in the foreground, is stunning.

It is not just about how it looks; this peaceful vibe is hard to describe.

The place is super clean and well-designed.

Even though there was some construction around, it stayed within the experience.

Moreover, there are some nice restaurants nearby, which is a plus.

Seeing the mosque lit up at night is something else.

It looks like it is floating on water – such a cool sight!

It is worth checking out, even if you are passing by.

Praying in the open area of the mosque was an experience I will not forget.

There is something special about it, with the sea breeze and the sound of the waves.

It is one of those moments that stay with you.

Moreover, this place is a must-visit if you love sunsets like I do.

Just chilling there with friends and family, watching the sun go down, does not get much better!

Al Tayebat International City

Explore Saudi Arabia’s heritage at Al Tayebat International City, a museum complex showcasing artifacts, manuscripts, and architectural styles.

Al Tayebat International City

I just had to share about this awesome museum I visited in Jeddah.

This hidden treasure is filled with cool Islamic artifacts and bits of Saudi history.

The place is huge, spread over four floors, and each one is packed with interesting stuff.

You have got rooms set up like in old times, some neat modern art, and these epic historical scenes.

The building is something to see – it has this amazing architecture.

Moreover, it is not just a quick walk-through kind of place.

You will want to spend a good chunk of time here, more than a day, to take it all in.

I also saw many school kids learning about their culture, which was cool.

They have everything from old books and pottery to a guide who knows everything there.

It is also known as the  Abdul Raouf Khalil Museum , and they have done a great job showing what life used to be like in Saudi Arabia.

The place is clean and well-maintained; they even have some tasty food.

It is perfect if you are into history or want to see something different.

Seriously, if you are in Jeddah, you have got to check it out.

It is like a trip back in time and a neat way to learn about the culture and history of the region.

They have a fantastic selection of perfumes and many snack options – I loved the tea and Belgian waffles.

The mall is easy to find and great for a long stroll.

There is a big food court with many different food choices, plus familiar coffee places like Starbucks.

It is well laid out, so finding your way around is easy.

What I like about this mall is how well everything is organized.

The food options are awesome, both in the food court and the other restaurants.

Plus, it is bright and welcoming; you do not get that smell of food everywhere.

It is close to Jeddah Airport’s South Terminal, so it is convenient for some last-minute shopping.

They have got a mix of high-end and more affordable brands.

It is also great for families – they have places like KidZania for the kids.

Biet Nassif

Discover Jeddah’s cultural history at Biet Nassif, an iconic 19th-century Al-Balad mansion now serving as a cultural center and museum.

Biet Nassif

I checked out Nasseef House in the old part of Jeddah, Al-Balad, which was fascinating.

It is this historical museum that dives into Saudi history and culture.

The place is over 150 years old and was designed by a Turkish architect, which adds to its charm.

It is the spot to hit if you are exploring old Jeddah.

The house has been beautifully restored and is packed with cool art and exhibits.

It is more than just a building; it is a trip back in time.

Nasseef House is one of those places you cannot miss.

It is a perfect blend of education and a spiritual journey.

It is among the oldest buildings in Al Balad and even recognized by UNESCO.

The architecture is classic Hijazi style – great for anyone in Arab history or architecture.

The area around Nasseef House is steeped in history and super interesting, but the opening hours can be a bit hit or miss.

It is a good idea to check before you go.

Moreover, for solo female travelers, be cautious around the district.

However, seriously, if you are in Jeddah, you have got to see this place.

It is like stepping into another era!

Gabel Street Souq

Experience the vibrant atmosphere of Gabel Street Souq, a traditional market where you can find everything from spices to handicrafts.

Gabel Street Souq

I had a chance to wander around Gabel Street in the old part of Jeddah, and it is such a cool place!

This old commercial street still has loads of character, even with all the modern malls popping up in Jeddah.

Walking down the street, you will find alleys covered by the sun, many shops selling everything from spices to traditional clothes, and some great old-style fish restaurants.

It is like stepping back in time.

Nearby, there are newer malls where you can grab good deals on clothes, shoes, and sunglasses.

Moreover, you have got to check out the perfumes and frankincense – they are just amazing.

Gabel Street is where to get a real feel for Jeddah’s history and souk vibe.

It is a must-see for anyone who wants to experience the city’s true essence.

They have an amazing collection of sea animals – sharks, tropical fish, big fishes, small fishes, and even eels.

The dolphin show is the show’s real star; super entertaining and educational, too.

You will laugh out loud.

The place is a dream for kids and aquatic lovers like me.

Moreover, when it is time for a break, there is a decent restaurant and a spot to relax outdoors.

It is ideal for school trips, college trips, and family outings.

Kids go nuts for it, and you will have a good time, too!

Al Salam Mall

It is a family-friendly shopping and entertainment destination featuring a variety of retail stores, eateries, and leisure activities.

Al Salam Mall

I went to this mall in Jeddah and loved it!

It is huge, super clean, and bright – totally a favorite spot of mine now.

They have loads of shops, restaurants, and a cool food court.

It is perfect for a day out with family or friends.

What is awesome is that it is not just about shopping; there is plenty of entertainment, too.

The prices are decent, and they have got this place called Danube that’s a big hit.

I also found a hypermarket inside, which is super convenient.

There, you will find various brands, including luxury, everyday stuff, and famous restaurants.

It is a one-stop shop for everything you need.

Moreover, if you are hunting for something specific and cannot find it anywhere else in Jeddah, chances are you will find it here.

The mall is big enough for a good long walk, has lots of parking, and is a great place to grab a bite.

I recommend checking it out if you are in the area!

Silver Sands Beach

Its serene, private beach offers pristine sands, crystal-clear waters, and a perfect escape from the city’s hustle.

Silver Sands Beach

I visited this beach near Jeddah, and it is a hidden gem!

It is out of the way and tricky to find, but once you are there, it is like being in the Caribbean.

Gorgeous white sand, clear water, palm trees – just beautiful.

It is a great place for a chill day, especially for ladies who want to relax freely.

It is pricey, and you need to book in advance.

It is a private beach, so not everyone can walk in.

They have some water activities, and the vibe is super relaxed and family-friendly.

They might ask for your passport at the gate, which can be off-putting.

However, honestly, the beach is so worth it.

If you are in Jeddah and looking for a beach day, this is the place to go.

Just kick back, soak up the sun, and enjoy the beautiful setting.

Bicycle Square

Bicycle Square, known for its enormous bicycle sculpture, is a popular landmark symbol of Jeddah’s commitment to art and culture.

Bicycle Square

We visited the Bicycle Roundabout in Jeddah , a unique historical monument.

It is this huge bicycle sculpture at a roundabout, a symbol of Jeddah’s past.

Locals love it – they even saved it from being removed.

It is old and could use fresh paint, but it is still a cool landmark.

It is near the souqs, easy to spot, and great for a quick selfie.

The area has been spruced up recently, but new construction might hide it.

Since it is super busy, you must continue for photos, but it is worth checking out if you are driving by.

The best time to see it is early morning on weekends.

It is not a typical tourist spot, but it adds to Jeddah’s charm.

Makkah Gate

The historic Makkah Gate, an ancient city entrance, is a testament to Jeddah’s historical significance as the gateway to Mecca.

Makkah Gate

We checked out the  Makkah Gat e, or  Quran Gate , on the  Jeddah–Makkah Highway .

This impressive arch marks the entrance to Makkah, about 27 km from the Grand Mosque.

Built in 1979, it is a symbol for the city and a boundary marker – non-Muslims cannot go past it.

The gate’s massive, covering eight lanes of traffic, and it has these cool patterns that light up at night.

The Makkah Gate is more modern and a real landmark on the way to the holy city.

It is amazing to see, especially when it is all lit up in the evenings.

So, if you are driving towards  Makkah from Jeddah , it is worth a stop for a quick photo.

Even if it is not a typical tourist spot, it is a key piece of the area’s history and interesting to check out.

  • Description

Historic Jeddah is situated on the eastern shore of the Red Sea. From the 7th century AD it was established as a major port for Indian Ocean trade routes, channelling goods to Mecca. It was also the gateway for Muslim pilgrims to Mecca who arrived by sea. These twin roles saw the city develop into a thriving multicultural centre, characterized by a distinctive architectural tradition, including tower houses built in the late 19th century by the city’s mercantile elites, and combining Red Sea coastal coral building traditions with influences and crafts from along the trade routes.

Outstanding Universal Value

Brief synthesis

Historic Jeddah is an outstanding reflection of the Red sea architectural tradition, a construction style once common to cities on both coasts of the Red sea, of which only scant vestiges are preserved outside the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the nominated property. The style is characterized by the imposing tower houses decorated by large wooden Roshan built in the late 19th century by the city`s mercantile elites, and also by lower coral stone houses, mosques, ribat-s, suqs and small public squares that together compose a vibrant space.

Historic Jeddah had a symbolic role as a gate to Makkah for Muslim pilgrims reaching Arabia by boat since the 7th century AH when the 3rd Caliph Othman ibn Affan made it the official port of Makkah. This strict association with the Muslim annual pilgrimage (Hajj) gave Historic Jeddah a cosmopolitan population where Muslims from Asia, Africa and the Middle East resided and worked, contributing to the city`s growth and prosperity.

Historic Jeddah reflects the final flourishing of the Indian Ocean sea trade after the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and the introduction of steamboats that linked Europe with India and Asia. This brought enormous wealth to many merchants who built lavishly decorated houses, and it also led to developments of suqs and mosques. In addition, the increase in sea going vessels allowed many more pilgrims to make the pilgrimage to Makkah, resulting in an expansion in the provision of accommodation for these visitors.

Criterion (ii): The cityscape of Historic Jeddah is the result of an important exchange of human values, technical Know-how, building materials and techniques across the Red Sea region and along the Indian Ocean routes between the 16th and the early 20th centuries. Historic Jeddah represents this cultural world that thrived, thanks to international sea trade; possessed a shared geographical, cultural and religious background; and built settlements with specific and innovative technical and aesthetic solutions to cope with the extreme climatic conditions of the region (humidity and heat).

Jeddah was, for centuries, the most important, largest and richest among these settlements and today, Historic Jeddah is the last surviving urban site along the Red Sea coast that still preserves the ensemble of the attributes of this culture: commercial-based economy, multi-cultural environment, isolated outward-oriented houses, coral masonry construction, precious woodwork decorating the facades, and specific technical devices to aid internal ventilation.

Criterion (iv): Historic Jeddah is an outstanding reflection of its final flourishing as a trading and pilgrimage city and, the only surviving urban ensemble of the Red Sea cultural world.

Jeddah’s Roshan tower houses are an outstanding example of a typology of buildings unique within the Arab and Moslem world. Their specific aesthetic and functional patterns - absence of courtyard, decorated Roshan façades, ground floor room used for offices and commerce, rooms rented for pilgrims - reflect their adaptation to both the hot and humid climate of the Red Sea and to the specificity of Jeddah, the Gate to the Holy City of Makkah for the pilgrims arriving by sea, and an important international commercial pole. The development of the Roshan tower houses in the second half of 19th century illustrates the evolution of the patterns of trade and pilgrimages in the Arabian Peninsula and in Asia following the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and the development of steamboat navigation routes linking Europe with India and East Asia. The extraordinary relevance of Jeddah’s tower houses is further increased by the fact that they are not only unique within the Red Sea culture region, an architectural typology born in Jeddah that spread to the nearby Hejaz cities of Al-Madinah, Makkah and Taif from where it has since completely disappeared under the pressure of modern development.

The overall landscape of Jeddah is characterised not only by the aesthetically remarkable tower houses, but also by the dense accumulations of lower houses, the ensembles of structures that related to trade, religion and the accommodation of pilgrims, and for the overall urban form and its division into clearly defined quarters.

Criterion (vi): Historic Jeddah is directly associated, both at the symbolic intangible level and at the architectural and urban level with the Hajj, the yearly Muslim pilgrimage to the Holy City of Makkah. Jeddah was the landing harbour for all the pilgrims that reached Arabia by sea, and for centuries, up to the present, the city lived in function of the pilgrimages. The goods the pilgrimage brought with them from Asia and Africa and sold in the city, the religious debates with Ulama(s) from Java and India, the spices, the food, and the intangible heritage of the city were all related to the pilgrimage that has immensely contributed to defining the identity of Jeddah. The association with Hajj is also very evident in the urban structure of the nominated property and is found in the traditional souks running East –West from the sea to Makkah Gate, the Ribat(s) and the Wakala(s) that used   to host the pilgrims; in the architecture, notably in the facades and internal structure of the houses; and in the very social fabric of the city, where Muslims from all over the world mingled, lived, and worked together. The ensemble of these elements, tangible and intangible, demonstrates the intimate and long-lasting connection between the pilgrimage and the nominated property and is an example of the very rich cultural diversity resulting from this religious event unique in the whole Islamic World.

The nominated property covers about one-third of the original walled-in city and contains an ensemble of the attributes that convey its Outstanding Universal Value, such as the main examples of Jeddah`s Roshan tower houses, outward-oriented houses, coral masonry construction, precious woodwork decorating the facades and specific technical devices for internal ventilation, as well as lower houses, the ensembles of structures that related to trade, religion and the accommodation of pilgrims, and for the overall urban form and its division into clearly defined quarters. Furthermore, Historic Jeddah, the Gate to Makkah is an urban environment boasting a strong trade-based economy intimately associated, both at the symbolic intangible level and at the architectural and urban level, with the Hajj, and a multi-cultural social framework where Muslims from all over the world live and work together. Its complete representation of the features and processes conveying its significance.

Notwithstanding the inevitable decay of the historic structures and the overall evolution of its urban surroundings, the nominated property still possesses all the necessary attributes complying with the concept of "intactness", including the commercial processes, the social relationships and the dynamic functions essential to define its distinctive character. As many of the attributes are highly vulnerable to decay and lack of conservation, there needs to be a precise delineation of what survives in terms of buildings and urban plan, as a basis for integrity, and also for future protection and conservation, and a clear understanding of the threshold beyond which integrity would no longer be intact if further buildings were lost.

Authenticity

Historic Jeddah, the Gate to Makkah is a living urban environment primarily hosting residential and commercial activities, with mosques and charitable structures. The nominated property represents an authentic and traditional urban environment where the headquarters of century old economic enterprises, retail shops, traditional souks, small cafes, popular restaurants, and street food vendors are still concentrated. A surprisingly rich human environment where Yemeni, Sudanese, Somali, Pakistani and Indian migrant workers purchase and market their products to Saudi and non- Saudi clients in crowded traditional souks. Far from a frozen and dead tourist attraction, the nominated property is an authentic sector of the city that still fully conveys the image of what this Red Sea commercial and pilgrimage city used to be. Its historic houses have not been substantially altered by modern additions and in-depth transformations, and the high "Roshan tower houses" are mostly well preserved. Historic mosques have preserved their function and role for the community and most of their original features. Buildings have only been subject to minor maintenance that has rarely reached the original masonries and their embedded wooden beams, preserving the overall authenticity of the site. Nevertheless the city is a shadow of the thriving, prosperous place it used to be and an understanding of its former importance will only fully emerge once its many buildings are nursed back to life.

  Protection and management requirements

The Saudi Council of Ministers has passed the New Antiquities, Museums and Urban Heritage Law by the Royal Decree Number (M/3) dated November 2nd 2014 providing the legal basis for the protection of Historic Jeddah.

The daily management of the nominated property is the responsibility of the local branches of the Municipality of Jeddah and SCTA, located in the heart of the old city. Their staff is in charge of supervising maintenance, cleaning, protection and presentation of the site. A parallel, traditional system, depending from the Ministry of Interior, is responsible of the social welfare of the population and of the security arrangement in the area in coordination with Police and Civil Defence. This traditional mechanism, based on the charismatic figure of the Umdah(s), permits to reach the ensemble of the population and to involve merchants, and owners’ associations in the management of the property.

A Management Plan is being developed.

The preservation of the Outstanding Universal Value of the site is guaranteed by the new Urban Regulation approved by the Jeddah municipality in 2011 that sets precise and strict obligations for the property and its buffer zone.

The key long-term requirement and most relevant priorities for the protection and management of the property include the reduction of the rate of decay of the historic houses, which are often abandoned and squatted by poor immigrants and the control of the speculative moves that jeopardize the ensemble of the historic city. The new Urban Regulation defines standard and official rules that can be verified and implemented on site. The involvement of merchants and owners, and punctual restoration and revitalization projects are expected to set a new virtuous circle to tackle the most significant threats to the property reducing its vulnerability to negative development that could affect its authenticity and integrity.

The general strategy for the preservation and revitalization of the area is being drawn by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) in coordination with the Jeddah Municipality and the participation of the civil society.

A detailed Conservation Strategy is being developed to set out how the massive, long-term conservation project to turn round the fortunes of the property, through stabilising and conserving the historic buildings and generating new uses, will be initiated, resourced and approved. It should also be underpinned by detailed surveys and analysis of the properties.
